Yankees-Sox on TV tonight

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 13, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees will play the dreaded Red Sox in Fort Myers tonight at 7:05 p.m.

NESN has the game and there will be a simulcast on MLB Network. The game is also on WRKO in Boston, 680 on the AM dial.

To whatever degree I can, I’ll update the blog. But with a night game, I have newspapers deadlines to meet and it gets a little tricky.

Chien-Ming Wang will face Tim Wakefield.

UPDATE, 2:22 p.m.: MLB contacted me. The game will be blacked out in the New York area. YES has the ability to request that and they did. I’m going to contact YES to ask them why they did this.

I love it! Finally, spring is back. Too bad I’ll have to watch it on NESN (is the MLB Network blacking out local games)?

  3. tampayank March 13th, 2009 at 11:47 am

nice, is Cano in the lineup?

  4. Joe March 13th, 2009 at 11:48 am

With a split squad game tomorrow afternoon… I doubt they send anyone good to Ft. Myers

    From the prior thread:

Jen, I’m serious – the News doesn’t even pretend to be objective anymore. The Post is trashy, but it’s generally trashy overall to both the Mets and the Yankees. The DN reminds me of the good old, old, old days where newspapers were basically vehicles for either Republican or Democratic platforms and they wrote venomous things about the other party. The News is a Mets vehicle and they don’t pretend to be otherwise.
Pat, I didn’t know about that article about Alex – wow. I wonder if there are any decent people out there who won’t speak with a newspaper – as much as I despise the News, that restaurant owner should have shut his trap. Restaurants in places like Vail (where there is a high celeb quotient) who make a good living on celeb patronage learn to keep their lips zipped about the celebs they see – this guy seems to be out of his league.

Sean Casey was on MLB network last night and he admitted that, while Manny was a distraction, he thought the term “cancer” was overstating the case…..and he said this more than once. I think he was surprised at Paplebon’s comments.

Hughes and Burnett pitch tomorrow – Hughes in Bradenton against the Bucs (not on tv) and Burnett (yay!) in Tampa against the Stro’s, on YES. It’s the only time I would ever be happy not seeing Phil, lol – I’m itching to see AJ pitch (even though it’s a ST game and it’s only his 2nd outing). The Yankees are taking very few players to Ft. Meyers tonight (X, Brett and Wang, I think), so don’t expect much….except more gushing in the papers tomorrow about how invincible the Sox are.

  7. Ross March 13th, 2009 at 11:50 am

I don’t get the MLB Network, why isn’t it on YES?

  8. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 11:50 am

A simulcast of the NESN game? No thanks – not interested in listening to the Sox announcers gush about their team, bash the Yankees and spend all game talking about Alex.

Cano should be playing tomorrow, in Tampa.

  9. oliver March 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am

Sigh wont be able to catch the game. Its not shown in singapore. Dammit

  10. m March 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am

    Betsy,

Thanks for that on Casey. Isn’t he the known as the nicest guy in baseball?

I didn’t realize it was a split-squad tom. Phil & AJ are favorites of mine, too.

  11. SJ44 March 13th, 2009 at 11:52 am

No Jeter, Arod, Cano, Tex, Marte, Rivera, CC, etc in Fort Myers.

It may say “New York” on the road jerseys but, this isn’t really the “Yankees”. Its the roadtrip ST version of the Yankees.

This disclaimer is for the people who will post in the gameday thread the Yankees either “have to send a message” to the Sox tonight. Or, try to tell us this is a “big” game.

  12. CanIGetAMooseCall March 13th, 2009 at 11:55 am

Tim Wakefield is still around. It’s garbage time!

  13. rb15 March 13th, 2009 at 11:55 am

well, i’ll still watch – i am starved for anything pinstriped up here in the nation. and, this will be my first shot to see any of the role players/prospects. count me in!

ps re my question on the blackout/simulcast. sorry. it’s friday.

  14. William Buckner March 13th, 2009 at 11:58 am

There is nothing to take away from from tonights game. NOTHING. Get your work in, stay healthy, call me when it counts.

  15. JohnC March 13th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Half of the regulars aren’t even making the trip, so it won’t even be close to a regular Yankees-Red Sox game.

  16. Brad March 13th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

The 1st chance of 2009 for the sillies and goofies of Boston to show their NY envy at the tiny bawlpark in Fort Myers. For many, this is their World Series.

  17. randy l. March 13th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

as much as i like some of the WBC match ups, an unintended consequence of this tournament is that it takes away from spring training games like tonight with the red sox.

because this was such an important season for the yankees this year , it’s not the best timing for the WBC from a yankee fan’s standpoint.

i’m finding myself totally bored with spring training and just watching the health of the players.

  18. jennifer March 13th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Oh great so we can watch the game but we have to listen to the annoying sox broadcasters. JOY!

  19. Giuseppe Franco March 13th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

    ———-

    Not really.

The only Yankee left playing in the WBC is Jeter and he probably wouldn’t have made the trip anyways.

If Teixeira, Damon, Swisher, and Posada are not making the trip tonight – it’s highly unlikely that Jeter would have.

“The DN reminds me of the good old, old, old days where newspapers were basically vehicles for either Republican or Democratic platforms and they wrote venomous things about the other party.”

Old, old, old days??? Like last week, you mean? Not for nothing, but the New York Times has been giving President Obama a full body tongue bath for about 2 years now. Plenty of papers still pushing political agendas.

That said, I agree with your assessment that the DN has been unduly harsh on all things Yankees.

  21. saucY March 13th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

“I don’t get the MLB Network, why isn’t it on YES?”

because the Nets are on at 10

  22. jennifer March 13th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

saucy who cares about the Nets? Aren’t the Yankees more important?

  23. hootyhoo March 13th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I think those of you complaining about the NESN announcers have probably never watched a game on NESN. They aren’t as bad as you think, and are much more level-headed than a lot of game announcers.

For those of you without access to MLB.tv or NESN, the guys at RiverAveBlues will probably be updating their Twitter with updates from the game (unless they’re watching a WBC game instead).

If there’s enough interest here I’ll “live-blog” the game on my Twitter as well. Pete will have his updates on this blog, obviously, but with stories to write for the paper he might not update that frequently.

  24. youngtimer March 13th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

@hootyhoo: I think that plenty of folks here have been subject to the NESN announcers. The people here are rabid fans so its silly for you to assume they haven’t. And yes they are homers. Sure they’re not as bad as Hawk Harrelson but almost.

  25. Marshall March 13th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Hey Pete, could you explain how all this blackout stuff works? I don’t get it! Why wouldn’t NY residents get the game tonight? How come YES has the ability to tell MLB Network NOT to show the game? It seems silly, as you mentioned… but I just don’t understand the system. What gives??

  26. Doreen March 13th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

How ridiculous! If YES is going to black out one of the few games that is even televised, they need to televise these games themselves. Just absolutely ridiculous. You know, first of all, it’s spring training. Second of all, since it was an away game, YES wasn’t going to telecast it anyway. Third of all, like I was going to fly down to Florida to see the game??????

Two ways to Thursday, all this does is tick people off!!!!!!!

  27. Doreen March 13th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Late to the discussion, but I was out all day. :)

  28. MELKYFAN March 13th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Wow, this is ridiculous. I was looking forward to watching the Yanks after a long day. Unbelievable.

  29. blackedout in bronx March 14th, 2009 at 1:55 am

Terrible move by YES. Why black out the game if you’re not going to show it on TV?

  30. saucY March 16th, 2009 at 11:19 am

i like the Nets (but like the Yankees much, much more).

but regular season basketball trumps pre-season baseball. they’re obligated.

however, one of the dates YES has MLB Network blacking out the game, there is no basketball game either. which means there must be another reason.
