Wrapping up the night in Tampa

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 17, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Could the Yankees ask for a better night from their Rehab Gang?

· Hideki Matsui (knees) went 2 for 2 with a double, a home run and four RBI.

· Jorge Posada (shoulder) caught five innings and was 1 for 3. He’ll rest on Wednesday and then catch Thursday and Friday.

· Mariano Rivera (shoulder) was Mariano Rivera. 11 pitches, 8 strikes, one easy inning.

Mo said his body will feel sore tomorrow but that it will be a normal sort of soreness. Posada said the one throw to the bases he made came without having a good grip on the ball, but that his shoulder felt fine.

That those three guys are on the field and playing well on Match 17 is a good sign for the Yankees.

Another good sign will be Team USA losing so Derek Jeter can come back. “No comment,” Joe Girardi said when asked who he was rooting for tonight in the WBC.

UPDATE, 11:03 p.m.: But wait! The most clutch third baseman in New York, David Wright, saves Team USA in the bottom of the ninth.

USA! USA! USA! They’re off to the semifinals.

C’mon Youk… channel that inner Red Sox mystique and get a hit.

Pretend it’s an Angels pitcher on a crisp October night!

  4. Run Gardner Run March 17th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Hahahaha how do you walk in a run like that?

  7. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

holy cow, Wright walk off single

  8. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

That was a fat one down the pipe, no way he was missing that, the AB of the game was Jimmy Rollins and Brian Roberts.

  9. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

can’t believe I cheered for Youk and Wright. once the season starts, I’m going back to being a Yankee fan. :D

  10. dann March 17th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

    That was a GREAT game

Jeter did what he could to lose it for them, but Wright bailed him out

  11. Jermaine D'Twan Monroe-Gibbons March 17th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

    David Wright=D-Money

  12. TurnTables March 17th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

What is the prize of winning this thing anyway? Do you get rings?

  13. K-Zone March 17th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

USA just has heart and guts

USA vs. Japan in the finals.

  14. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Mistake of the game Saul Rivera was used too early and Fernando Cabrera is not a CL that was just not smart managing. Great AB by Roberts and Rollins and great job getting the big hit by David Wright.

  15. Clare March 17th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Has Peter ever missed an opportunity to knock ARod?

One might think you could enjoy a win by Team USA, in a tournament that ARod isn’t even playing in, without a snide, petty comment about OUR team’s third baseman.

  16. Betsy March 17th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Oh well – I thought Jeter would be coming home.
Still, it was a great night for the Yankees…..and I’m glad Mo warned us so that we don’t get alarmed by his soreness tomorrow. GREAT news that Jorge’s shoulder feels fine. Very glad to see Matsui starting to hit the ball with authority – think I’ll catch the replay later to see that HR, which I missed. Only negative – Aceves, but I guess that’s really his problem as the Yankees have several options for long-man.

“UPDATE, 11:03 p.m.: But wait! The most clutch third baseman in New York, David Wright, saves Team USA in the bottom of the ninth.”

    :D Pete

  18. Betsy March 17th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Oops, and I forgot Edward – he was terrific tonight. That change was really working tonight…wow.

  19. Todd S. March 17th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

Great job by Wright. I would trade A-Rod for him anyday

    Off to LA

  20. DT March 17th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Jeter hits a rope in the 9th inning and he is no longer clutch.

Wright hits a RF flair to win the game and he’s a hero.

What is so surprising is that Jeter has ALWAYS been so clutch in… March. (where is the rolling eyes icon?)

  21. thomo March 17th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

according to SI – Jeter’s lack of defense (to his left) cost US team two runs -not likely to get better for the Captain- and DH just isn’t an option with Matsui/ Jorge a question mark/ X and now Swisher.

  22. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

‘Great job by Wright. I would trade A-Rod for him anyday’

    LOL no you wouldn’t.

  23. Clint March 17th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Edwar looked great. He’s making the team.

Pen is pretty much set. Only suspense is if the Yanks decide to give Tomko the 40 man spot, doubt it. I bet they go with Giese.

  24. NYYanksFan March 17th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

“UPDATE, 11:03 p.m.: But wait! The most clutch third baseman in New York, David Wright, saves Team USA in the bottom of the ninth.”

Only if hitting .243 with RISP can be defined as “clutch”.

  25. Jersey Joe March 17th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

Wright doesn’t kiss himself in the mirror and he’s clean.

For those reasons alone, I take him over A-Rod.

  26. o'mel March 17th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

SI can stick it where magazines can’t be read. Jeter just set it up so that this game would be a CLASSIC.

  27. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

So he hits a GW vs a minor league pitcher and he’s better all the sudden ? com’on stop making yourself look like a fool.

  28. teddy March 17th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

exacly wright didn’t exacly smoke that ball. he found a hole, jeter smoke it but right at rios. wright had a great game all round, great baserunning. great game for davod. better to be lucky than good

  29. jax gmen March 17th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

thomo, nothing we can do about declining jeter until 2010.

then we have to look at our other options. he simply cannot play SS anymore and it’s going to get worse as the weeks go on.

  30. raymagnetic March 17th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

“Great job by Wright. I would trade A-Rod for him anyday’

    LOL no you wouldn’t.”

I would trade A-Rod for Wright in a nano-second. The METS wouldn’t do that trade however.

  31. Rafael March 17th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

    Pete, just leave A-Rod alone

“But wait! The most clutch third baseman in New York, David Wright”

you talk so much about him, even when he’s not on the subject…looks like you have a big not corresponded crush on him

  32. Betsy March 17th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

    Some quotes about Mo -

    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/yankees/

  33. Clare March 17th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

No one without weird ARod issues would have looked at that picture and thought it involved a kiss.

And we don’t know who’s clean in baseball, we just know some of the names of who got caught.

  34. Intracostal March 17th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

If Cashman was offered Wright for A-Rod, he would do it without thinking. Not even close. Now that the HR chase is fraudulent, he presents no value except bad PR.

  35. Bronx Jeers March 17th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

You know what would be great for Team USA?

If Oswalt goes down with bruised buttocks and AJ takes his turn!

  36. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Calre, thanks for saying that. When I looked at the picture I didn’t think he was kissing himself. And I was just about to ask if people were sure that he was kissing himself? You’re a weird bunch to call it that! IMO anyway.

  37. o'mel March 17th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Everyone needs to relax. Jeter has made his living off of flairs and bloops.

Now the WBC is getting really interesting.

  38. Todd S. March 17th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Wright is everything that A-Rod is not. It had nothing to do with this game.

Don’t blame him because the Mets had no bullpen.

  39. Betsy March 17th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

I guess David Wright morphed into a better player than Alex overnight. He’s had severe clutch issues of his own yet most people would trade Alex for him? Ok……….

  40. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Well I’ll say this. The game tonight for me was the JC Romero memorial karma game.

Team USA won. All that counts.

  41. Drain003 March 17th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Jeter hasn’t gotten it done the past couple of Octobers either. He is not what he once was. His defensive decline has far outweighed his offensive one though.

  42. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

I’m watching SportCenter and they are showing the press conference with Wright, Youklis, and Johnson at the table. See I wanted DJ to be there.

  43. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

‘Wright is everything that A-Rod is not. It had nothing to do with this game.

Don’t blame him because the Mets had no bullpen.’

Wright isn’t a clutch batter so don’t even go there, the Mets last season were carried and still will be by Carlos Delgado, he goes down the ship sinks.

  44. NITRO March 17th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Fernando Cabrera’s ERA the last 3 years

    2008 – 5.40
    2007 – 12.60
    2006 – 5.19

He has one career save. What in the world did he do to warrant closing an elimination game?

  45. Blackdragon905 March 17th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

anybody watching yu darvish pitch for japan on mlb network right now>

  46. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

“Great job by Wright. I would trade A-Rod for him anyday’

    LOL no you wouldn’t.”

I would trade A-Rod for Ryan Zimmerman **and** Yunel Escobar. :D

  47. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Also the number of error throws that Wright produces we can overlook all that w/ a hit off someone who isn’t even better than Ewar Ramirez or David Robertson.

  48. raymagnetic March 17th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

“I guess David Wright morphed into a better player than Alex overnight. He’s had severe clutch issues of his own yet most people would trade Alex for him? Ok……….”

Wright is younger and millions of dollars cheaper and he puts up great numbers, what’s not to like?

No way the Mets would ever trade Wright for A-Rod though

  49. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

“Jeter hasn’t gotten it done the past couple of Octobers either. He is not what he once was. His defensive decline has far outweighed his offensive one though.”

You’re right Drain. It’s hard to deny when you see it with your own eyes. It’s not a knock on the guy. He is probably still head and shoulders above a lot of players. It’s only to say that his skills have declined, something that happens to all players at some point.

  50. GreenBeret7 March 17th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

How far has Chris Britton fallen? He won’t make the Padres relief corps unless they have a ton of injuries.

  51. 27 in 09 March 17th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Any GM would take Wright over A-Rod. Now after the steroid admission, it is even more true.

    Is this really being discussed?

  52. NYYanksFan March 17th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

“Wright is everything that A-Rod is not.”

I don’t care about off the field so on the field, what would those things be?

Not more clutch, doesn’t have as strong an arm, isn’t as good a baserunner.

  53. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

‘He has one career save. What in the world did he do to warrant closing an elimination game?’

Hence how PR’s managing loss this game for them, Saul Rivera should have been saved for that type of situation, instead he used him earlier and chose F-Cab over JC Romero, Romero who is use to pressure situations.

  54. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

BlackDragon, I just wanted to see the press conference on this game. I will be turning to the other game soon.

  55. raymagnetic March 17th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

“Jeter hasn’t gotten it done the past couple of Octobers either. He is not what he once was. His defensive decline has far outweighed his offensive one though.”

Jeter had one down year offensively and it’s been said he was hurt for weeks last year. His defense was the best it’s been in years last year.

  56. teddy March 17th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

•CC Sabathia: “He was dirty. He looked amazing. I’ve never had a dominant closer like that. Bob Wickman and Joe Borowski were great, but Mo is something different.”

    lol C.C. on mo lol

  57. 24 Score March 17th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Wright is 7 years younger, makes a fraction of the money, has no off-the-field issues, and is clean.

He is like a more talented Jeter. He’s the only likeable Met.

  58. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

More of tonight’s game coverage on ESPN right now.

  59. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

    ‘Is this really being discussed?’

Srsly you had to expect baseball dummies to flock here and chatter about it after that. There is no one stupid enough..well correction there aren’t many people stupid enough to call Wright clutch or anywhere near Alex Rodriguez.

  60. Blackdragon905 March 17th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

trisha, so far Darvish has been fairly unimpressive. Its also hard to judge him as there is no thing on the tv to tell how fast he is throwing. He did throw one really nasty fastball with a lot of movement. But that’s about it so far. His command is way off.

  61. tampayank March 17th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

What? A good defensive third baseman?

  63. ECG 234 March 17th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

You have to take off the field actions into considerations when evaluating every player.

A-Rod’s on his way down, Wright is just entering his prime.

Once is 26, the other is going to be 34.

If you offer Omar (even though he loves Latinos) A-Rod for Wright and are even willing to eat a good chunk of his contract, he will hang up the phone.

  64. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Blackdragon thanks. I am now watching the ESPN press conferences but as soon as those are over, I’ll switch to the WBC.

  65. Betsy March 17th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

People that dislike Alex (a majority) woulld prefer David – that’s what it comes down to.

  66. tampayank March 17th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

the WBC needed for the U.S. to at least make it to the seminfinal in L.A. so maybe interest will get a boost in the final round here in the States….but they’re still competing w/ March Madness

  67. 7*7 March 17th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

Wright’s arm is like Mark Grudzalnik and Mark Loretta

Other than that, I’d much rather have him than A-Rod.

  68. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

And once Wright enters his 30′s what will he do better ?

I’m still waiting to hear what does he do better than Arod.

  70. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

    Two can play this game.

You think Omar trades Jose Reyes for Derek Jeter right now ?

  71. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

watch me get blasted right now:

Zimmerman is a **better** defensive player than Wright :D

  72. Clint March 17th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

MLB would rather take their chances with March Maddness than trying to compete with the NFL and College Football in November.

The ratings are much improved though… still not much interest but getting better.

  73. vtred March 17th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

I hope Davey learned his lesson— Jeter is strictly the DH. Rollins is the everyday SS.

  74. DT March 17th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

    I stand corrected.

I looked it up. In October 2008 Jeter had ZERO hits. Not one! Not a flair, not a bloop. That is amazing!

He’s done. Maybe he’ll do a Mantle and announce his retirement in March.

In the 2005 playoffs Jeter hit .333
In the 2006 playoffs Jeter hit .500
In the 2007 playoffs Jeter hit .176

again, in the 2008 playoffs he went hitless, yeah he’s done.

  75. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

“You think Omar trades Jose Reyes for Derek Jeter right now ?”

or how about Edwar Ramirez for Daniel Murphy / Ryan Church?

  76. Ziny March 17th, 2009 at 11:40 pm

so now you care about the WBC?

  77. Joe I March 17th, 2009 at 11:40 pm

“I’m still waiting to hear what does he do better than Arod.”

Bounce throws past the first baseman.

  78. ECG 234 March 17th, 2009 at 11:40 pm

Brandon – Reyes is far superior, offensively or defensively than Jeter and is younger, faster, and does everything better.

Wright vs. A-Rod is a much closer contest than Reyes vs. Jeter

  79. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:40 pm

‘or how about Edwar Ramirez for Daniel Murphy / Ryan Church?’

    Pack your stuff Eddie

  80. Clint March 17th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Why would he trade Reyes for Jeter? One is past his prime, the other is entering his prime and is better on both sides of the ball.

  81. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

No wonder I saw Team USA winning the game…

    :)

It’s to point out how stupid this talk is.

  83. Y26 March 17th, 2009 at 11:42 pm

The steroid admission has a lot to do with so many people souring on A-Rod.

  84. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:43 pm

Brandon,LOL. You know if that trade would really happen, Omar asking for Ramirez and Cashman does ask for either one of them. You know Omar would do it since Ramirez is Hispanic. :D

  85. Jeet Skeet March 17th, 2009 at 11:43 pm

jeter looked real good on defense today…..NOT
no wonder arod wants reyes on the team hes the only one man enough to say the yanks need a new SS. Great captain but he should not play shortstop anymore..his time has come..and no im not kidding

  86. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:43 pm

“It’s to point out how stupid this talk is.”

    ditto.

  87. tampayank March 17th, 2009 at 11:44 pm

I’m fine w/ Jeter as SS for the next few seasons but not in 2011…it will just hurt the team defensively

  88. Justice2000 March 17th, 2009 at 11:44 pm

The WBC is awesome. God, what a bunch of whiny pussies…ooh, I cant play for my country, I might crack a nail, waah waah. If you watched Venezuela vs. PR, DR vs. Netherlands, or US vs. PR today, you saw wonderful intense baseball. If you want passion, turn on Korea vs. Japan right now. It’s crazy over there at Petco!

  89. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:45 pm

“no wonder arod wants reyes on the team hes the only one man enough to say”

it was just a **compliment** , who wouldn’t want Reyes on their team?

Oh please it’s not that serious.

  91. NY Yanks 23 March 17th, 2009 at 11:46 pm

I wouldn’t trade Jetes for Reyes

Jeter is a clutch performer and the consummate professional. Well respected by everyone in baseball and a winner.

Reyes is an immature clown who showboats and isin’t a winning player.

    LOL!!!!!

Loyalty aside NY Yanks 23 I would, but this is a different case, it’s like not trading Mo or Bernie or Pettitte but loyalty aside if the Yankees org. didn’t have a strong passionate fanbase they’d do it.

  95. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 17th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

HA. Zimmerman **is better** than Wright defensively. :D

Why are people dissecting Jeter’s liability on defense as it is something new?

It has hit a new low, but it’s been declining for years. We’re just going to have to live with it. But it’s not something that came out of left field.

  97. Bauer March 17th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Jeter > Reyes everyday of the week. I’d rather lose with class than win with someone like Reyes who is a team cancer

  98. Wilson March 17th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

Wright is a future 1st baseman BTW

Still love to have him on the team, perhaps playing left field where his arm wouldn’t be a liability.

  99. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:53 pm

‘Wright is a future 1st baseman BTW

    Now there’s an idea !

Robi, Nady + Ian Kennedy + Melky + Coke for David Wright

seriously. him winning a gold glove is a joke.

  101. Jeet Skeet March 17th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

why would u have to live with it. The guy cant dive for balls in either direction, and it was HORRID last year and i pray that this WBC game isnt an indicator of what his defense is going to be. Im not knockin the respect this guy gets its great..he is a great leader but he simply cant hack it on D anymore. Respect doesnt win you games..Defense does

  102. dave March 17th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Weren’t we going to trade Kennedy, Jario Heredia, Colin Curtis, and JB Cox to Texas for somebody? I forgot who. Maybe Neftali Feliz and a catcher? Or was it Hamilton?

  103. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 17th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

‘seriously. him winning a gold glove is a joke.’

Ryan Zimmerman and Miguel Cabrera had to have been cracking up when they saw that, Aramis Ramirez burned his glove after he saw Wright win the GG.

Neftali isn’t going anywhere, you can try but he won’t, and umm recovering drug addict in NYC lifestyle very risky. :?

  105. raymagnetic March 17th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

“Brandon – Reyes is far superior, offensively or defensively than Jeter and is younger, faster, and does everything better.”

This is one of the silliest things I think I’ve read on the blog.

Reyes isn’t as good a player as Jeter. In fact he’s overrated. Reyes has a lifetime .336 OBP. Seriously, you have no idea what you’re talking about. A .336 OBP is TERRIBLE for a leadoff hitter.

Wright isn’t as good a player as A-Rod but he’s very good and the Mets wouldn’t trade him for A-Rod, no way no how.

  106. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 17th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Looks like Darvish is finding his rhythm. Wow.

  107. Z (sign Manny) March 17th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    Jeet,

We have to live with it because nobody in the Yankees FO has the guts to tell Jeter to change positions.

There is reason there have been 10 articles about how the Yankees FO is dreading the 2010 contract negotiation with him.

He needs to go to LF/CF for the good of the team, but who is going to ask him to? And will he even do it or will he get ticked off for suggesting it?

  108. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 18th, 2009 at 12:00 am

Brandon, when I was playing the Show before, I was wondering why Zimmerman has a A for defense and Wright had a lower grading. I now know why Zimmerman has a better grading.

  109. Jeet Skeet March 18th, 2009 at 12:00 am

well i guess we will see hoe good of a captain he really is when that time comes huh. Will he ultimately take one for the team and switch positions or will he be a stubborn old man thats going to kill his team defensively.

  110. Jared Jeffries March 18th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Reyes is a track star with a bat… not in Jeter’s class at all.

  111. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 18th, 2009 at 12:01 am

“‘Weren’t we going to trade Kennedy, Jario Heredia, Colin Curtis, and JB Cox to Texas for somebody? I forgot who. Maybe Neftali Feliz and a catcher? Or was it Hamilton?’”

I would had seriously done that trade for Hamilton. Last I heard was Nolan Ryan expressed interested in Ian Kennedy for one of his surplus of catchers.

  112. lil' m March 18th, 2009 at 12:02 am

It begins: the season hasn’t even started, and already the Jeter-is-done pronouncements are shifting into high gear. Wow. Any chance of holding off at least until May or June before calling it a career? Jose Reyes is a terrific young player, no doubt about it, but really . . . Sharper than a serpent’s tooth is an ungrateful Yankee fan . . .

  113. Jeet Skeet March 18th, 2009 at 12:04 am

no one said his career is done…just his defense

He did but that was for Blalock or Vasquez or Salty..Neftali your talking about a package around Jackson or Montero or Brackman + more.

“He did but that was for Blalock or Vasquez or Salty..Neftali your talking about a package around Jackson or Montero or Brackman + more.”

dude, imagine Max Ramirez and Jesus Montero in the same lineup? that’s like Ortiz and Manny, the younger version.

  117. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 18th, 2009 at 12:12 am

Max is talented and very raw he looks like Victor Diaz at the plate and he’s a C hence the comparison to … but Montero is just a beast at a very young age. He kills the ball, literally kills it.

  118. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 18th, 2009 at 12:14 am

Brandon, well Max could also play the infield corners. if the catching gig doesn’t work out, there always the corner. that would be one way to get his bat in the lineup, if not there there’s always DH for him.

  119. V March 18th, 2009 at 12:15 am

“dude, imagine Max Ramirez and Jesus Montero in the same lineup? that’s like Ortiz and Manny, the younger version.”

Taylor Teagarden ain’t no schlub either. Salty the worst of the 3, IMO.

  124. Matthew March 18th, 2009 at 1:02 am

I’d love to get Shaq, Jason Kidd, and T-Mac in 2010 if we miss out on LeBron

3 for the price of 1

  125. Drills March 18th, 2009 at 1:03 am

    I’d trade Brakcman for Neftali.

I think Feftali is much much more of a sure bet to be a ML stud than Brackman.

Sure Brackman has more potential, but whats the chance he ever reaches it?

I don’t think TEX would do it though.

  126. Chris March 18th, 2009 at 1:12 am

i enjoy reading this blog.. but comments like the david wright one turn me off. i mean granted a rod has had a rough off season with the yanks, but its our turn to support him like we did giambi and pettite. pete consistantly mentions how good of a guy giambi is but constantly bashes a rod. post like this make me reconsider reading this blog on an everyday basis

  127. kylelitke March 18th, 2009 at 1:13 am

I’m a big defender of A-Rod, but in all honesty, I’d trade him straight up for Wright. A-Rod’s not likely to get better from here on out…he may have more MVP years in him but he may not. Wright isn’t much of a dropoff at all (and could be better in a down year for A-Rod), less of an injury risk considering we don’t know how Alex will come back from the hip, younger, cheaper…

Of course the Mets would never ever do that.

  128. kylelitke March 18th, 2009 at 1:14 am

Also I do think Pete can sometimes take shots at Alex a little too much, but this seemed like a harmless joke to me, not something to get mad over.

  129. kylelitke March 18th, 2009 at 1:14 am

oh im not mad its just im sick of it from the whole offseason.i am not one to usually comment on the blog. but im just kind of getting fed up with the arod stuff. hes out with an injury lets let it be. im happy for team usa. and whoever plays for them. but i mean this isnt a team usa blog its a yankee blog, and i dont want everyone one who writes for the yankees to be a homer. but i dont want everyone who writes for the yankees to be a lupica who bashes them. arod got and is getting what he deserves from espn and everyone else.. shouldnt be be supporting him. i mean the guy isnt even playing right now and is getting bashed.

  131. Desmond March 18th, 2009 at 1:35 am

It was an amazing game. How pity was the fact that there was merely 10,000 people in the house (and a fan with whistle)?

If U.S.A. is gonna to take this thing seriously, they should DH Jeter and start Rollins at SS every game after (Oh the seeding game for against Venezuela doesn’t count). If you have seen the videos it’s very clear that Rollins is gonna to make a play with ease. I am a big DJ fan but I somehow think this “Alternate starting SS” rule is embrassing Jeter more than benefiting him. Now Chipper is out, make Jeter the regular DH and put on the best defense to try to win the game.

Btw, the way Heath Bell has been pitching in the WBC makes you think Brian Burney would be a much better option. (or Crazy Kyle maybe?)

  132. Christina March 18th, 2009 at 1:39 am

Some of you guys are nuts. The dude is a baseball player and is posing like hes a freaking model. It doesnt make sense why he would do this. In comparing arod to Giambi and Pettitte, I dont see either of them continously acting like a fool. That is all Alex does over and over again. When is he going to stop with the crap and just play ball?

  133. carl March 18th, 2009 at 1:46 am

Why do you even care what he does off the field?

  134. Al from BK March 18th, 2009 at 2:03 am

USA! Lol I turned off the game prematurely it seems. DAVID WRIGHT, FTW!

  135. Desmond March 18th, 2009 at 3:21 am

Just would like to share a good side story of today’s WBC game.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html

Maybe we really should think about why most of the nation’s baseball fans view the ST as more important than the WBC.

  136. o'mel March 18th, 2009 at 4:07 am

“With Alex Rodriguez recovering from hip surgery in Colorado, his bewildering portraits were simply a source of amusement, passed around the clubhouse among the players for pregame laughs.”

lol. I hope they texted Al and asked him what was he thinking. Too bad he’s not here to laugh with them.

BTW, thanks to the person who posted that Alex’s rehab was going well and that he’s definitely on track. Just hope he doesn’t push himself too hard and ends up with a setback.

Great, great story. Thanks for the link.

last night was really the 1st WBC game I’ve been able to watch almost from start to finish and I’ve got to say it was a great game! It’s a crazy feeling to get that involved with and nervous over a baseball game this early in the year!

  140. Ralow March 18th, 2009 at 7:56 am

    Pete,

Every chance you get you take a shot at A-Rod. Its getting old man. You are ruining a great blog. Grow up and just report Yankees news like you used to.

    Thanks.

  141. rupert pupkin March 18th, 2009 at 8:01 am

how could anybody NOT take a shot of a guy who poses for pictures kissing himself?

  142. Kevin March 18th, 2009 at 8:04 am

Found it telling that the only two times Jetes made it into the highlight reel was for failing to make a play up the middle. That’s what you get for wasting the superior defensive shortstop at DH.

  143. saucY March 18th, 2009 at 11:50 am

“Reyes is a track star with a bat… not in Jeter’s class at all.”

this is the quote of the thread.

he may have more value in fantasy leagues, which i think misleads tons of people these days. But nobody should kid themselves that he’s actually a better player…

  144. saucY March 18th, 2009 at 11:51 am

ST is more important than the WBC

but the WBC is way more entertaining…

  145. Jeter in CF March 22nd, 2009 at 12:51 am
