Rasner a No. 3 starter in Japan

A reader from Japan, Hiroto, e-mailed in a nice report on Darrell Rasner.

Rasner was with the Yankees last season but was allowed to sign with the Tohoku-Rakuten Golden Eagles. He has made four appearances in their spring training, throwing 14.2 innings and allowing eight earned runs.

Despite that, Hiroto reports that Rasner will be the No. 3 starter behind two pitchers on Japan’s WBC team. Rasner is getting used to baseball in Japan and the slightly different size of the baseball.

Darrell is a good guy and he has a chance to make some money in Japan for his young family. Hopefully he succeeds. Thanks to Hiroto for the report. We really appreciate the interest and feedback we get from fans in other countries.

Cheers to our newly found pitching depth; it means Rasner can enjoy pitching somewhere else and at the same time we don’t have to rely on him.

Hopefully Rasner has some success in Japan; he gave it a good effort in the US. He may not have had a ton of success with the Yankees, but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. I wasn’t a fan of his; however I still think he deserves to see some success.

    Good luck Rasner in japan.

Good for Darrell hopefully he carves out a nice niche in Japan and gets some financial stability for his family at the same time.

I think it’s crazy that more players don’t try to play in japan. Like Bernie Williams, he has a specific skill set and if he could play a couple more years then why not. On second thought, a lot of these guys are loaded.

Some of these guys have made some big coin in their careers so they don’t really need to go out to Japan however a guy like Razzy could use that environment to his advantage as the level of play is far lower.

Coke will be the setup man until Melancon is ready.

    Good luck in japan Rasner

    good for Darrell Rasner.

    always did like him.

Bruney has looked way off all spring and Melancon got sent down after 1 bad outing hopefully he earns his way back in.

  10. m-Da Pope March 20th, 2009 at 12:55 am

Yeah, I even remember Bruney not looking so hot in his rehab and then when he hit the bigs, he flipped the switch.

Anyhoo, if he or Veras can’t hack it we got options.

Coke needs to play a big role on the backend of the bullpen. Otherwise, we’ll never hear the end of the Joba debate.

m-Da Pope- I agree Coke is real good and I’m sure Girardi will use him accordingly.

I heard Bruney say in an interview that this was the first spring training that he felt he had a roster spot locked up so he feels free enough to spend the spring actually working on pitches instead of trying to impress his coaches with his best stuff. Hopefully it will pay off for him once the season starts.

    good luck to razzle dazzle

i was 15-1 today on my bracket…too bad western kentucky had to screw me on the last game of the night :(

  14. D-Train March 20th, 2009 at 1:04 am

Coke is seemingly the only reliever we have who can throw strikes consistently… thats why he is so attractive.

  15. Matt M March 20th, 2009 at 1:07 am

Bruney does have a spot locked up, but I doubt he has the 8th inning locked up. And if you listen to him, he is speaking as if he is pitching the 8th inning in a very confident manner.

He may have it locked up now but if he continues to falter, Girardi will have some thinking to do. It’s not like he’ll have a particularly long leash anyway with all the arms we have plus Melancon waiting in the wings.

  16. m March 20th, 2009 at 1:08 am

Agreed, D-train. On the back end, it’s who you trust with the ball.

  17. Al from BK March 20th, 2009 at 1:10 am

I hope Bruney isn’t making light of his place in the pen. If he pitches like this come April it will not be well received.

“I think it’s crazy that more players don’t try to play in japan.”

The rules of professional baseball in Japan only allow 4 foreigners to be on each 25 man roster and only 3 to be allowed on the field together at any time. With 12 teams in the league that’s only 48 foreign born players who could be in the league at one time. A little different than MLB in the US.

Good for him, hopefully he suceeds overseas. Thanks Pete!

  20. Pokey March 20th, 2009 at 3:07 am

As long as he remembers to tip his cap after he hits someone he should be okay…

Bruney will be fine… I am more worried about Veras…

  21. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__ March 20th, 2009 at 3:19 am

    Bruney is fine.

~Wow that’s a very odd rule, but at least it makes it harder form them to compete with MLB and we get too see more of the talent around the world.

~Great opportunity for Rasner and his family.

  24. TJ March 20th, 2009 at 7:43 am

Rasner is adjusting well to Japan. His parents were supposed to go over to see the family last week, but his mother got pneumonia. He is such a nice guy and I hope he does well over there. Being a Yankees fan, I hate not seeing him pitching for the Yankees especially when I went to my first Yankees spring training game. If anyone would like to send him any well wishes please let me know, his sister is best friends with my wife and we hope to go out to reno later this year to see his parents and sister. Thanks

  25. BD March 20th, 2009 at 9:34 am

Ironically, Rasner was the Yankees’ No. 3 last year, in terms of number of starts.

  26. saucY March 20th, 2009 at 11:55 am

BD, watch out! i haven’t seen the irony police in a while, but i know they’re out there

  27. eric March 20th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Anyone notice how much Moose praised Phil Coke in 08? Hopefully Coke’s successful with us for years to come…

  28. Marc W March 20th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

    We should’ve kept Rasner
