What do you expect? He needs to keep all those World Series rings somewhere

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 20, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

So it seems that Derek Jeter is building a big house.

No, a really big house. A gigantic house.

According to the Tampa Tribune, Jeter is building a seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom waterfront mansion on Davis Island in Tampa that will be 30,875 square feet. It will be the largest private home in Hillsborough County.

How big is that? The average Best Buy is 39,700 square feet. The captain dropped $7.7 million on the property alone.

In other news, A-Rod announced plans to build a house that is 30,876 square feet.

“In other news, A-Rod announced plans to build a house that is 30,876 square feet.”

Wouldn’t shock me one bit and I suspect that the walls are one large mirror too.

Ok Pete, we know that Arod=Jan, and Jeter= Marsha.

  3. Pel (Derek Jeter: Pasta Diving Champion) March 20th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

    Irony.

  4. SteveB March 20th, 2009 at 5:44 pm

With a kissing mirror in every room.

  5. Lauren March 20th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

oh lord. i hope this doesn’t mean he plans on “settling down”. ladies, brace yourselves.

    LOL @ the PayRod jab.

Can’t wait for the Joba Q&A!

  6. Tyler March 20th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

If this had been about Arod buying a huge house Pete would have made it into a negative story.

  7. Uncle "extra arm" Ellsworth March 20th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Wow that is big. about half the size of the breakers

Seems like the mood is much lighter without A-Rod there. No drama, no controversy, not having 20 reporters ask other plays about A-Rod’s actions etc.

They seemed to have rallied around Cody

  9. CK in LA March 20th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Way to go, Jete …. stimulate that economy!!

  11. Mike R March 20th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I can’t wait to get invited the first party he throws there. I hear Jeter’s parties tend to be a good time.

  12. Benny Blanco March 20th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Jeter has dated or has been linked with Jessica Alba, Jessica Beil, Mariah Carey, and Vanessa Minnillo( nick lachey’s boo). Arod supposedly dates madonna and the whole world goes nuts.

  13. Doe March 20th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

    Good for Jeter

  14. Uncle "extra arm" Ellsworth March 20th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

At this point Pete is just pushing our buttons or trying to.
    Have fun with it.

  15. Nick March 20th, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Alba, Biel, Mariah Carey, Minnilo, Minka….. Madonna (current)

Which one in that group doesn’t belong? Thats why A-Rod gets the flack he does

Big house for a single guy.

  18. 2009 Yankees March 20th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

At least there is a private airport so he can check on his rings whenever he wants to fly down there. I wonder what it’s like to live ALONE in a BEST BUY sized house.

  19. Lucas March 20th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

What is the best answer to the question, “Derek, where is this relationship headed?”

  20. saucy March 20th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

Am I the only one that thought it was much bigger, until the best buy reference was made?

  21. YankeesLuv March 20th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

If it was Arod building a house like that then people would be screaming that he’s flaunting his wealth.

I’m sorry, but it’s tough to read this when so many of my friends are losing their jobs, can’t find one, etc. I know Jeter is not doing anything wrong, it just rubs me the wrong way.

In any case, use it well and in good health, Jete.

Well, it takes a 30,000 square foot house to get a hottie to move to Florida.

    jeter is the man

  30. Doreen March 20th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

If I had the money Derek Jeter had, I’d build a house like that, too. He can afford the house, the furnishings, the maintenance and the staff it will take to run it. It’s like a mini-city. Heck, sometimes I WISH I had those kinds of resources. I wish him the best with this venture.

It does probably mean he’s ready to look toward his future. BUT, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s settling down altogether. He does have family, and I’m sure there’ll be room for Mom, Dad, sis and whoever else.

I just wonder what his decorating style will be. :)

(And if it were ARod, I’d be saying the same things – although, haven’t we already seen how ARod – or someone -decorated his NY apartment? And parts of his Miami house, too.) Do you think Jeter will do a House & Garden spread? Hmm. I don’t think he will. :)

  31. BillyBall March 20th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Some Los Metros fans and myself got into a spirited debate over Robbie Cano and Jose Reyes. I know better not too argue with a Met fan but this opportunity proved to be irresistible. The reason being is that these Met fans have a history of stupidity barring moronic Yankee comments. They feel that Jose Reyes is a superstar. I agreed. They stated that Robbie Cano is on the decline and is an average 2nd baseman. That is where I threw the bomb at them. I stated that Reyes was indeed a superstar, and probably more important to the Mets than Cano is to the Yankees. In fact Reyes is an overall better player without a doubt. The argument was stupid to begin with as they play different positions. They are the same age though and I felt like tweaking these idiots. So I than stated that even though Reyes is better overall I feel that Cano does have a better bat. He is a better offensive player. His Batting average is better, his yearly rbi, and HR average is better. His slugging percentage is better. In fact is On Base percentage is equal which amazed me. I than stated I would rather have Cano at the plate as a hitter than Reyes. To this a large argument ensued where Met fans felt I was attacking there legend. Look at the numbers, the facts are right there. Cano career at bat has been better so far with 1000 less plate appearances than Reyes. Numbers do not lie my fellow Yankee fans!

Pete, it used to bother me how much you dogged A-Rod, but I’ve got to admit. . . You’re growing on me. Very funny. Very clever.

  34. Uncle "extra arm" Ellsworth March 20th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Doreen i hope the style is as classy as the man and not some modern monstosity.

  35. Doreen March 20th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

    Uncle Ellsworth -

    Me, too.

I think what happens a lot of times is a decorator is hired, and unless you have very specific tastes, the decor really ends up reflecting your pocketbook and the decorator’s “suggestions.” (I think that is what ARod’s apartment was all about.)

  36. Jon G March 20th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

That’s just stupid to build a house that big.

    Who needs that??

I hope that being in FLORIDA along the ocean, he makes it solar and wind powered. Otherwise, he’s going to have the carbon footprint of a Best Buy too.

This could be a PR disaster for him if the green media gets started on it…

Where on earth is he going to put it? The only open land on that island is directly next to the airport. That seems less than ideal. I guess if it’s just a private airport though it won’t be loud and crazy all the time.

  41. JimmyH March 20th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

If interested google maps there are 2 vacant lots on Bahama Circle that’s where the house will be.

  51. EastSide March 20th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Reyes and Cano are actually very similar offensive players.

Except Reyes has much better speed (which translated to more extra base hits as well) and a better defender. He also has been more consistent. Then again, guys with his type of speed don’t go through many slumps because they can always beat out a groundball.

    Reyes’ walk totals last 3 years — 53, 77, 66.
    Cano’s were 18, 39, 26.

Reyes walks more, steals more bases, and will have the same amount if not more extra base hits (he had 72 last year). Better defender too. Only place Cano has him beat is BA (though Reyes is no slouch there with a .287 career BA). If Cano isin’t smoking the ball, he is pretty useless. Where as Reyes will walk more and can get infield hits with his speed.

Not whole lot of land there relativly speaking

  54. Teixeiramvp March 20th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

EastSide-While I agree Reyes is, right now anyway, the all around better player, Cano’s defense is arguably as good. A lot of errors, true, but only because he has good range. Errors are fixed with age. Still, Reyes is, I think, the better player.

  55. Teixeiramvp March 20th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

  64. The Ghost March 20th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

he could buy about 5000 houses in Cleveland for that kind of money. That’s not even a joke. I for one think it’s pretty disgusting to be showing such an ostentatious display of wealth especially in a state like Florida which is getting hurt pretty bad by the collapse in real estate prices. But hey, this is America, no need to ever apologise for vulgarity.

  65. Jeff NJ March 20th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Yes Jeter should leave his money in the bank forever to get 8% interest a year. That would be great for the economy.

  66. K March 20th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

So I am totally going to be slammed for this, but I couldn’t resist – good for Jete – 9 bathrooms and 7 bedrooms, finally a place a large enough for his ego.

Oh and yes, I get the impression he is thinking about retiring in the near future.

  67. ZaWheelZ March 20th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

why can’t he spend his money the way he wants?

ghost- why would anyone want to build a house in the state of ohio?

    good for jeter.

  68. T15D23 March 20th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Good for him and a good time to be doing this. Jeter helps the local economy and will certainly bring up the land value.

And it looks like he isn’t planning such huge digs to live by himself. Gotta married at some point and have a few little ones.

    Again, good for him.

  69. Lara08 March 20th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

I just looked through the largest realty website and can’t find a 30,000 SF house to get perspective on what it would look like.

If my math skills haven’t failed me….

using a football field, 30,000 SF would be approximately sideline to sideline and 60 yards- so from the goal line to the opposing 40. The house is 2 stories so the footprint is smaller but in total space that’s a really big house.

  71. Mike S. March 20th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

7 bedrooms. WOW. One extra one for each actress/gf. Not only that, more than enough room so they don’t run into each other. I am filled with envy.

  73. Tampa Yankee Fan March 21st, 2009 at 9:12 am

According to the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s website, Kered Connors LLC owns THREE adjacent parcels on western Davis Island waterfront. Here are the purchase prices – 4.65M for a double lot, and 3.016M for a single. So 7.666M for the land.

I’ll bet there are two VERY HAPPY sellers about now as the post bubble land value there is more like 3 Million.

Good for him? What does that even mean? It’s not like Jeter just signed a big contract and is buying a house for his mom, so why good for him? I’m sure he has huge houses already, and we know he has plenty of money, so why is it “good for him” if he builds a house? Anyone? Is he finally living the American dream? Does this house symbolize some accomplishment? No. So stop with the “good for him” garbage.

  77. I"m A Fan March 21st, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Derek better be careful. The PR pushback on this could be pretty bad. Oprah’s house in California isn’t even that big. Not even close.

He must not remember the huge coverage (including the New York Times) when it was discovered that Lance Armstrong’s house in Austin, Texas was the #1 individual consumer of water in the city. And Lance’s home and grounds aren’t as big as Jeter’s. Lance’s house and grounds used 330,000 GALLONS of water a month. Lance had to issue a “I had no idea and I’ll do better” mea culpa because water conversation folks were howling.

I’m also trying to figure out why you would waste 31,000 feet on just seven bedrooms. Is each bedroom 2,000 square feet or what? Why not build a compound with several homes/structures on such a huge property?

Sometimes – based on some of his past endorsements which were questionable at best – I don’t think Derek gets very good business advice, from his agent, parents (he said he runs all his deals by them), whomever.

Just as an aside: As many business reporters have noted, a person like Jeter should be making more money on better quality, longterm endorsements, and he never has. He makes about $7 million a year, which is a pittance compared to Jordan, Woods, P. Manning, and the Williams sisters; and has numerous questionable short-term business deals like his health clubs, which aren’t doing very well. And that batting training informercial thing, which was so cheesy I have blocked out of my mind.

But it’s his money, so he can waste it however.

PS As far as the wife and family thing, no wife in the world is going to want to move into an already-decorated- without-her-approval 31,000 square foot house – so he better get the wife soon, so she can decorate it. Otherwise, he will waste more money redecorating when she moves in. Count on that.
