Nice, we get to see Joba on YES

  2. Jorge (México) March 22nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

    Pete:
Do you think this means Tomko is winning the race over Aceves? I think Alfredo was OK today, and that he’s getting better each outing. Your thoughts?

  3. Bronx Jeers March 22nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Dice-K’s pitch count rising fast. Mid-season form for him.

  4. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:00 pm

    dice-k pitching scared. love it…

  5. vinny-b (Girardi, Pettitte, Mo, Matsui, Gardner = my top 5) March 22nd, 2009 at 9:00 pm

“Why bring up Jeter? Huh? The dude is single. Different rules. Try again”

one has to be married, to be a ‘womanizer’ then?

    good to know.

  6. Starks March 22nd, 2009 at 9:03 pm

    mel,

It’s sad that the A-Rod apologists need to try and (unsuccessfully) bury Jeter just to make A-Rod look better.

In reality, it just makes them look more misinformed. Jeter has nothing to do with A-Rod. Jeter is looked at as the ambassador of baseball in baseball circles and A-Rod is laughed at it

  7. gayle March 22nd, 2009 at 9:03 pm

Amazing that Dice K starts to face real mlb hitters he reverts to the typical Dice K rather than how he has been pitching in the WBC up until now.

Rather than go after hitters he is nibbling.

  8. NongEyeJon March 22nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Is anyone at all concerned that Brett Tomko, who has been pretty bad throughout his career, has the chance to be our long-man. Yes, some might diminish that importance, but cmon…why would he figure it out now, with the Yankees in spring training. Is he Darrell Rasner?

  9. jack March 22nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Atleast Jeter breaks up with a girl before moving on to the next one.

ARod cheated on his wife and kids with a hooker.

You guys are really reaching to defend ARod….

  10. Michael March 22nd, 2009 at 9:07 pm

    good job by Oswalt there

  11. m March 22nd, 2009 at 9:08 pm

    Starks,

I can’t decide if it’s funny or sad watching people try to justify steroids, adultery, and prostitution.

  12. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:09 pm

jack – i don’t really think any of us should be holding anybody to any *moral standards.* every person does their own thing. as long as he’s not breaking laws, it is what it is. arod’s only flaw is not keeping it private but then again, he doesn’t have to.

it’s why none of us should care what any athlete we watch does as a person. only keep the emotional connection to them as a player on the field and that’s it. i’m sure jeter has some ghosts too – he’s just awesome at hiding them.

  13. Zodiac March 22nd, 2009 at 9:10 pm

    m -

I bet these A-Rod apologists will cheer when A-Rod breaks the milestones and say ‘everyone did steroids’, so his numbers aren’t tainted.

  14. Nick in SF March 22nd, 2009 at 9:13 pm

“I can’t decide if it’s funny or sad watching people try to justify steroids, adultery, and prostitution.”

Or in the case of Arod’s blond she-hulk pal in Toronto, all three?

(to be serious, not every person is trying to justify Arod’s behavior; some are simply trying to put it in perspective)

  15. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 9:14 pm

I cannot believe how this topic never dies – if we all agreed on everything life would be pretty boring.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong in terms of fan opinion, but we can respect each other enough to agree to disagree, right?

Do the “anti-arods” want to just go ahead and delete all his numbers? Do you want the other 100+ names released? Do you want to know what other indescretions atheletes conduct on a daily basis? Or, do you just not like him for whatever reason and find this another flag to raise?

  16. Uncle Ellsworth March 22nd, 2009 at 9:15 pm

    Nick in SF
What did you think of the BSG finale?

  17. m March 22nd, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Oops. That’s alleged use of prostitution. But he’s probably guilty because all the players use ‘em right?

    Zodiac,

Be prepared for the “Pitchers were using them, too” defense.

  18. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:15 pm

zodiac and m – did you guys support bill clinton? b/c he blatantly lied to the american public and cheated on his wife. but he also was a good president for us. my point is that what a person does outside of their said profession shouldn’t matter to us b/c it’s none of our business. as long as they perform on their job, that’s all that should matter. again, everyone has their flaws and everyone has done questionable things. the only difference is that we know more about some than others. it’s probably best not to use it as a judging criteria b/c it then everyone will look bad.

nick – that’s a good way of putting it…just try to put what they do in perspective. really, who are *we* to judge anyone? i sure wouldn’t like anybody judging me.

  19. Uncle Ellsworth March 22nd, 2009 at 9:17 pm

    Nick in SF

What did you think of the BSG finale?

This is a pretty good game.

  20. Uncle Ellsworth March 22nd, 2009 at 9:18 pm

    sorry double post

  21. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:19 pm

uncle ellsworth – bsg’s 2nd half of season 4 was disspointing to me. there just seemed to be so many wasted episodes and less disclosure for an ending series. the finale was ok but still dissapointing.

  22. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 22nd, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    ******************************************************

    Exactly, Nick. Spot on.

  23. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:20 pm

roberts with two makeable plays there…

  24. m March 22nd, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    Nick,

    Good point.

I cheer for the player, but not the person in this case. As a Yankee fan, I wish he’d stop the embarrassing behavior of the field. I’m sure the Yankees would like it to stop as well.

But people need to stop fighting for the wrong and use a different argument to defend him.

I could even accept the “Let’s cheer for A-rod because he’s a Yankee” argument over justifying it by saying everyone does it (which isn’t even true).

  25. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:21 pm

    oswalt losing it here…

  26. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 pm

how can you be an outfielder, a professional major league outfielder, and not have a strong arm (like dunn)???

  27. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    Damn!

Okay, so Team USA better pick up the pace both in the field and at the plate.

  28. Nick in SF March 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Uncle Ellsworth: I don’t want to say anything specific about the BSG finale so as not to spoil it for poeple who might not have watched it yet.

I will say that, while a few of the specifics might not have completely worked for me, it was pretty satisfying on an emotional leval and I was totally riveted to my set. A couple times I had to pause it because it was so intense (and because I had a couple shekels riding on the ncaa hoops games going on at the same time).

The first hour (last week’s ep) looks better now that I understand that it wasn’t meant to stand alone, it was always supposed to be a 3-hour finale seen at one time. And I’ve read that 15-20 minutes will be added to the dvd release.

I’m hoping that a few things make more sense when “The Plan” is released. But two thumbs up for the finale, for sure.

  29. Uncle Ellsworth March 22nd, 2009 at 9:24 pm

abcd I pretty much agree re: Battlestar.
It did cement Tigh as my favorite character. It was good to see Baltar and Cap 6 together again too.

    Here come the Japanese.

  30. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:24 pm

Nothing like a noodle arm in the outfield.

    :(

  31. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm

    adam dunn is not helping

  32. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm

jeez, these NL pitchers kill me…

  33. Marraro March 22nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Ok… find another player who did steroids, cheated on his wife, lied to Katie Couric (and Gammons), hooked up with a prostitute, kisses a mirror etc. and he will be bashed endlessly just like A-Rod is.

This hooker thing is not an isolated incident. This is a pattern of low character judgment.

  34. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm

abcd, the bane of my baseball existence is watching outfielders who throw like I do.

  35. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm

roberts cost us a critical run this inning…

  36. R-Tek March 22nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Oswalt with a Peavy-like performance lol

    Shame.

  37. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

where is davey johnson or the pitching coach? wth are they doing?

  38. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

  39. Doreen March 22nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

US trying very hard to lose this game. :(

  40. m March 22nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

    Where’s Peavy? :(

  41. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:28 pm

i give oswalt and peavy props for joining the team unlike a bunch of other pansies…but jeez man, these NL aces aren’t that great…

  42. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:28 pm

trisha – i’m almost 100% certain that you have a stronger arm than dunn…

  43. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm

    :D

  44. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 9:30 pm

so how many pitches is that this inning?

  45. Betsy March 22nd, 2009 at 9:30 pm

AJ against the Sox should be interesting…

  46. Uncle Ellsworth March 22nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm

    Thanks Nick.
Though it was emotional I was expecting my gut wrenched a little more. Good not great.

    Houston we have a problem.

  47. Kent March 22nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Believe it or not, a lot of people actually took pride in A-Rod being the Clean HR king and being able to witness it over the next 10 years and have that apart of Yankees franchise history.

Now? He’s a nobody. His numbers mean nothing.

People need root for the uniform… not the players. Hope that A-Rod carries us to the WS.

  48. joe March 22nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm

if any of you fancy a good challenge: 7 minutes to guess all MLB managers for all 30 teams.

    http://www.sporcle.com/games/mlbmanagers.php

  49. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm

davey johnson has done a downright horrible job as the manager of this team…

  50. Blackdragon905 March 22nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm

Wow, its amazing how overrated some of these NL pitches are. I know that its still March, but everyone knows, that these dominant numbers that certain NL pitches put up are just so skewed its not even funny.

  51. John March 22nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm

All I want AJ to do against Boston is work on that change. If he isin’t going to do it in ST, when is he ever going to try it? It doesn’t matter if he gets shelled, thats what ST is for.

As CB said, that pitch is very important for him as a turning point in his career.

  52. Doreen March 22nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm

It’s early. Let’s see what happens.

  53. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here March 22nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm

So maybe Jeter will be coming back soon? We will see.

  54. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 22nd, 2009 at 9:36 pm

“But people need to stop fighting for the wrong and use a different argument to defend him.”

That’s not what most reasonable people are doing though. And generally when they comment with an attempt to put things in some kind of perspective, they get labeled as “apologists”.

Sometimes it feels like unless you join in on the pile-on him by making cracks and judgments about him, you’re labeled an apologist and that’s just wrong. There has to be a middle ground

  55. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:36 pm

And Davey Torre wakes up long enough to decide that he’s seen enough. Nothing like a day late and a dollar short with that hook.

However, Team Japan scored 4 runs in an inning. Now let’s see Team USA do the same thing.

  56. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:37 pm

    And they still get him.

  57. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Angel – i agree…I would say 95% of the time I type up a post I don’t submit to not appear to be an “apologist”…I could care less about any of this as long as the Yankees win/do well

  58. Uncle Ellsworth March 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

    Let’s get a couple back!

  59. m March 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Through 4 innings, Roy was 66 pitches, 20 batters. Dice was 80 pitches, 18 batters.

    Agree with Doreen. It’s early.

  60. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

“It’s early. Let’s see what happens.”

Agree. Team USA can still come back.

    GOOD ON YA JETE!

    :)

  61. Michael March 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Joe- i solved it with 4:07 remaining

  62. Nick in SF March 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Maybe I’m grading BSG on a curve, I watched the first 3 seasons and “Razor” on dvd in a few months and only watched season 4 in ‘real’ time. Anyway, fans of the show who have already watched the finale might find lots of interest here:

    http://tinyurl.com/dmkbaq

There’s an interview with Ron Moore and some of the cast as well as links to lots of other info. It may help put some things in perspective, which we all now agree is a good thing. ;)

Meanwhile, it’s not too late for the USA to come back in this game. So say we all!

  63. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

“just cut the lead in half”

  64. Gonzo March 22nd, 2009 at 9:40 pm

Look what the NL did for Sabathia. What he did last year was unearthly.

Santana looked like he was on his way down in Minnesota, only to have the best ERA of his career for the Mets.

Heck, even Karstens did well for the Pirates.

The NL is so inferior. Very few top pitchers will translate well here.

  65. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:41 pm

lol – two guys get on – japanese coach comes out. oswalt gives up 52 consecutive singles and davey johnson is eating sunflower seeds…

  66. Jorge (México) March 22nd, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Fatsuzaka being Fatsuzaka. USA can still make it. Go destroy the Red Sox “ace”

  67. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:42 pm

look at pettite go to the NL and just outright dominate. pitching #’s really have to be taken with a grain of salt for those guys…

  68. ZMan March 22nd, 2009 at 9:43 pm

To be fair to Davey, the rules are very prohibitive. If he goes to his pen too early and uses up some guys, he won’t have them available for tomorrow in the potential finals game if they throw too many pitches.

But all in all, he has done a dreadful job managing.

  69. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Wright’s at least making him work.

  70. m March 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm

    Angel,

Then why post “everyone does it” if you don’t condone his behavior?

And someone said that everyone that’s ragging on A-rod would love to get half the action he does. Uh. No. So not true.

  71. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm

zman – no tomorrow if they don’t win today…

  72. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 9:45 pm

  73. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 9:45 pm

  74. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

He’s sure capable of doing it.

  75. Countdown March 22nd, 2009 at 9:47 pm

    Two week until opening day!!

  76. Falcons Z March 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm

I don’t care one way or the other about A-Rod. As long as he hits, let him do whatever he wants off the field.

Reading some of the responses here, clearly some go out of their way to defend him and look very foolish doing so. Some of this stuff is indefensible. Taking the “everybody does/did it” argument is the easy way out.

Then you had some people make up rumors about Jeter and other people which Pete rightfully deleted. Thats when it gets too much and reinforces the ‘apologist’ angle.

  77. hateraid March 22nd, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Anyone else notice how awful this umpire is? He’s completely inconsistent it would be infuriating to be hitting under those circumstances.

  78. Blackdragon905 March 22nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm

You just knew Dunn would strike out there…

  79. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm

  82. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 22nd, 2009 at 9:59 pm

M – I don’t count what the posters who only show up to pile on Pete the minute he posts something about A-Rod as the people I’m talking about though. I guess, that’s who I categorize those people as, and I agree they’re really just being a tad idiotic, and they almost have a bit too much invested in things.

Have you ever noticed how most of them are never heard from when baseball is being discussed? lol :)

  83. Countdown March 22nd, 2009 at 9:59 pm

That catch kind of sums out the way this game is going tonight. Team USA certainly isn’t catching any breaks.

  85. Betsy March 22nd, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Ok, I guess the game isn’t going well and I don’t think most of us are enamored of talking about madams and the like, so here’s this:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb

The dual press conference ended up being a really special thing, I think – it certainly has linked CC and AJ together. Call of Duty sounds kind of fun – I’ll bet it’s pretty addictive.

  87. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 22nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

I guess the middle ground I’m talking about is those who don’t condone what A-Rod does in his personal life, but aren’t going to pile on him for it either. I don’t agree with what he does, but I agree even less with the attention and time in the papers and given that’s given to it. Octomom etc. etc. UGH.

I’m a pretty live and let live person when it comes to other people’s private lives for the most part, though. I hate magazines like US/People and I want to smack Perez Hilton’s face every time someone on my FaceBook sends me a link to his “latest”. :(

A-Rod just seems to abnormal compared to the rest of the team.

While these guys are all normal and like to do mundane things like fish, play video games, go to NBA games, A-Rod hangs out with hookers.

  103. Betsy March 22nd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

I love reading these types of articles, Rishi. Even though chemistry supposedly doesn’t matter and even though I think winning does breed chemistry, I still think that a team that is bonded together will find it easier to get through the dog days than a team that is constantly sniping at each other.

This is completely off-subject, but I noticed a few days ago that Whitey Lockman died (he played for the NY Giants). I would not have been familar with him at all except for the WS highlights aired on MLB network. I feel especially sad (it’s always sad when someone dies) because in an odd way, I feel like I got to know him as a player.

Interestingly, he was quoted fairly recently as saying that he hurt his shoulder pretty badly when he and his teammates carried Bobby Thomson on their shoulders after his pennant-winning HR and it messed him up for the WS that year. RIP Whitey

  104. Betsy March 22nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Teddy, he was going to, but the Yanks have their Boys and Girls Club luncheon that day and they wanted AJ and Jorge to be in Tampa for that (instead of travelling to a minor-league game)

  105. Andrew March 22nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Speaking of Jose Canseco…. A-Rod tried to steal his wife too, didn’t he?

It’s impossible to root for this guy. Just hit the ball in Oct, Alex.

  106. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

It’s those articles that humanize the players…you like that the feel accountable to one another – it is the way it should be and a strong sign of success to come…I cannot wait for the games to count :)

  107. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 10:24 pm

Wow he was really trucking. Too bad it’s a two-out hit.

  108. Joe March 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Man Rollins is such a winning player. He is openly confident and backs it up every time

Always was one of my fav. players. Glad that he won his WS ring last year.

  109. NJ Yanks March 22nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Wright, how do you swing at that?

That looked like A-Rod against Fuasto Carmona in the playoffs.

  110. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm

What in hell was he swinging at.

Well, the worst Team USA will finish in this tournament is 4th. Last time around they finished 8th.

  111. Serranwrap March 22nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Do they really have to keep saying team before the country every single time?

Anyone else just realize that the Yankees are actually better than Team USA?

  114. CYF March 22nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Looks like it’s gonna be Japan-Korea in the finals. Go Korea!

  115. jennifer March 22nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Anyone know where Jorge is catching tomorrow? Will be be catching Wanger in the minors tomorrow?

  116. m March 22nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm

I thought we were 15th? 8th sounds better, though.

I’ll add one more ‘sad’ to the many I’ve already posted. It’s sad to see the home opener countdown on the Yankee site. It seems like months from now.

  117. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here March 22nd, 2009 at 10:35 pm

  118. m March 22nd, 2009 at 10:37 pm

    myrtle,

Team Yankees are better than a lot of teams. Just don’t try to convince espn of that!

Pete’s season preview and predictions will be interesting. Hard to see him picking against a rotation of CC/WA/AJ/AP/JA. Pressure’s on you, Pete!

  119. CYF March 22nd, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Wow, this Mahara guy looks great. 94-95 with a lot of tailing action to his fastball.

  120. NJ Yanks March 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 pm

We need to start scouting Japan and Korea much better. They have some big time arms.

  121. Doreen March 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 pm

    S.A. -

I saw that reported the other day and had the same reaction as you did.

Not sure. Most of these guys donate to charity already. I suppose if the player has no problem with it, then it’s fine. If the player has a problem, I guess it could be a deal-breaker.

My thought is no one should be forced to donate – encouraged, sure, but not forced.

  122. Doreen March 22nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

The problem is the US team is trying to serve two masters – the WBC plus the obligation to the MLB teams. No other team has to deal with that. This will never be a “fair” situation for the US. They have to take part to lend legitimacy, but they will always be at a disadvantage because of timing.

  123. JohnBlacksox (24 + 1) March 22nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Has anyone signed up for Extra Innings on Charter???

I called them last week, and they said to call back “in a week or two”, which would mean right as the season is starting.

I’m suspicious now that Charter is even carrying Extra Innings in 2009. They claimed they were, but they lie.

    Does anyone have any info?

    Thanks!

  124. Serranwrap March 22nd, 2009 at 10:46 pm

USA does have the advantage of playing the games at home though and not traveling across the world. If this were like the World Cup then it’d be held at different sites each time and then the U.S. would really not be able to attract its top players.

  125. pat March 22nd, 2009 at 10:46 pm

Pete defending gossip reporting as news is as puzzling to me as people defending Alex’s off field activities.

IMO, “Everyone does it” doesn’t cut the mustard but everyone writing or talking about gossip doesn’t mean it’s newsworthy either.

I read the Journal News everyday and Pete reports little of what he writes on this blog. Space is surely a consideration but IF all the Alex stuff really was news that needs to be reported, it would be reported there and it hasn’t been.

Sorry to bring the conversation back here but I was out all day and some of the things I skimmed made me feel the need to say that.

    Seranwrap -

    You’re right about the travel.

I want to take out my use of the word “fair,” quotations or not. I mean they US will always be at some disadvantage regarding players available and timing. BUT it doesn’t mean they are not able to overcome any disadvantage.

    pat,

Because anything involving A-Rod generates twice as many comments/blog hits as normal baseball discussion.

The game thread got almost 500 comments for a meaningless Spring game on a Sunday afternoon (in a game Aceves started that was not well played and lackluster).

People say they don’t care about A-Rod, but the comments and traffic this site generates suggest otherwise.

  178. DT March 22nd, 2009 at 11:08 pm

  201. NITRO March 22nd, 2009 at 11:12 pm

The problem is the awful defense throughout the field.

Braun has no position (he masks as a LF)

Dunn is awful anywhere he plays

    DeRosa is not a 1B

    Jeter is an awful SS

Let this be a lesson to those who want Swisher in CF over Gardner. Defense and pitching win.

  209. CaptainsCorner March 22nd, 2009 at 11:15 pm

The 3 stooges actually just said something that made sense. All the other teams are playing and doing anything to win. Johnson has played this game like an all star game. Leaving Oswalt out then to get smacked around. I thought after the 4th run he would be gone, and not going to a better reliever to start the 8th.

  219. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 11:17 pm

    dang…that was deflating.

this is on davey johnson. tonight’s game had nothing ot do with politics despite espn’s excuse making.

    - not sending a picthing coach to talk to oswalt
    - bringing in victorino as a defensive replacement taking him out of hte lineup or for pinch running
    - bringing in hanrahan

just terrible managing that had nothing to do with politics.

  220. tampayank March 22nd, 2009 at 11:17 pm

As Michael Kay once said when talking about what will happen w/ Jeter after 2010, “How long do you keep having to pay for the 90s?”

cold hearted Cashman probably would want to move on but the Steinbrenners may have a different idea; I think you can’t have a DH w/o power

  221. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 22nd, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Thats quite a mountain to climb in the 9th.

Betsy I can tell you that I am not at all panicking. I’m being a realist. Jeter’s skills have slipped. Maybe he’s spending too much time pining over Minka, maybe it’s a function of age, maybe it’s a lot of things. But he hasn’t been the same player who won the MVP in the All Star Game and the World Series in the same year, in a long long time.

    My opinion.

  229. CYF March 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Darvish is looking good. Keith Law thinks he has the stuff to be a legit MLB #1 type if he ever came over to MLB.

  230. CaptainsCorner March 22nd, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Jeter and Wright should be used to this type of game. Jeter from recent Yankee play off games and Wright from his team thinking the season ends in August.

  233. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 11:20 pm

i do think jeter starting at SS was political. but his error wasn’t the reason we lost this game – although it hurt. davey’s nap in the 4th inning is why we lost this game.

I heard them saying the other night that Darvish said he would retire before he would play in the MLB and he hoped Japan would never put him in that position. He said that the Japanese kids who want to play baseball need role models right there in Japan.

  241. tampayank March 22nd, 2009 at 11:24 pm

“lotta weird people on here…jeter makes 1 error and now hes done?…we all know hes not great defensively but hes passable…one error today doesnt change that”

he’s had a couple this tournament, he had a big E during that Puerto Rico comeback game, I’ve cringed watching him play this WBC, specifically defensively and also I’m not sure if he’s hit a ball out of the infield

As Torre indicated in his book, Cashman is a stat guy and he isin’t going to re-sign an aging Jeter with non-existent defense and no power.

He will let him walk if he is no longer a good player. Unless Hank/Hal intervene like they did for A-Rod, Jeter is likely gone in 2010.

Okay, I have a question for those of you that are somewhat familiar with seating at the new Yankee Stadium – well those of you that have ticket plans. I’m buying tickets for a game in April and I want to know where the best area is to get seats (getting them on stubhub) without having to sell my firstborn to do so? Because I get to one game every couple of years I’m willing to pay more than bleachers/grandstand seats, but not quite as much as legends/field areas. Any ideas?

  256. Scorpio March 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm

    Trisha,

I read an article last year where Darvish’s dad pretty much offered him up to the Red Sox, how he loves the New England area, looks up to Dice-K yadayada, so who knows…not that the Yanks should care, cause they never have luck with Japanese pitchers.

  257. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Congratulations to Team Japan. They obviously deserved this win.

That said, I will say that both Korea and Japan have been practicing and playing ball together for this tournament a lot longer than the other teams have had the opportunity to do. So maybe it makes sense that there are in a lot better shape in terms of being in good baseball form.

  258. DT March 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm

You would gave thought Oswalt would gave pitched better – a win would have given him an extra day away from those hapless Astros.

Jeter will be ok with his boyfriend Wright giving him massages on the way back to New York.

  261. Betsy March 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Trish, I’m going to avoid getting into serious discussions about Jeter because I honestly feel (and my comments were not directed to you specifically) that there is a lot of unnecessary panicking about Jeter because he’s not that good defensively. He should have won the 2006 MVP and I think his 2007 #s were fine. We can not forget that he played much of last season with a terribly sore, near-broken wrist. I’m confident that he is going to have a very good year and I guess I’ll leave it at that. I don’t care about the WBC so I didn’t watch tonight. He made one error, but I don’t believe in blaming a fielder because a pitcher can’t pitch around an error. One run ? Understandble. 4 or 5 runs? There’s no excuse for not making sufficient pitches to minimize the damage.

I respect your opinions, but I think we just disagree on this. I’m glad Jeter is coming back to camp and I honestly don’t care what his critics (I don’t mean on this board, I mean in general) say – I just want the season to start.

  262. Wow. March 22nd, 2009 at 11:28 pm

  264. K-Zone March 22nd, 2009 at 11:29 pm

I love Jeter. He was and still is my favorite player. He represented the franchise well (unlike A-Roid) and has been nothing but class.

That being said, he has declined significantly. It’s not even about numbers. Watch the guy play, he isin’t close to what he was in his prime. His defense may be the worst of any player at any position in MLB.

You cannot re-sign him if you have the best interest of the on-the-field franchise in mind….

  268. abcd March 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 pm

    Jeter IS overrated.

  271. CaptainsCorner March 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 pm

The Yanks will NEVER tell Jeter no. It is the Steins decision not Cashmans. If he has a good season I think the most they will give him is a 1 year with a option or maybe a 2 year deal if he has 2 really good years. He won’t get anything more then that guaranteed. Maybe if they didn’t sign Tex he can play 1st..but since he did there is no other position for him. They will not have a singles hitting DH. I wonder if he would consider playing LF.. I doubt it but I don’t think he can play SS for another 4 years. He is lucky if he gets threw this year.

  272. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Betsy you are absolutely right that Jeter’s error did not lose the game. It came at a bad time of course but a lot happened in the game that was just plain ugly.

Team USA got badly outplayed. Davey Johnson’s inability to know when to pull a pitcher resonated throughout the entire tournament.

I’m glad you guys got into it and I’m sorry you were disappointed that the USA lost…….Me? I’m glad to have all our players back in camp.

  278. Clint March 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm

    vinny,

Sadly you are right. There is no way that Jeter and his agent deal with Cashman. They will go straight to Hank/Hal to negotiate. You don’t let a GM handle a negotiation like this if you’re Jeter, you go straight to the owner.

And the Steinbros will be mesmerized by the good PR he brings and how he is the Anti-ARod and a winner and true Yankee, 4 rings etc. and they will re-sign him to big money.

Cashman may have gotten ‘power’ for little things, but not for the big time players. Jeter is an issue that Hank/Hal will give in to, Cashman will have no input.

  279. Rishi March 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm

I have a feeling Cashman will threaten to resign if Hank/Hal overrule him on Jeter.

  282. GreenBeret7 March 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Darvish has stated on more than one occassion that his primary goal is to win 200 games in Japan. He has 47 in 4 years, now.

Um, I think you’re getting a little carried away here. Especially after watching Abreu in RF.

Jeter’s fine at SS for 2009, take it one year at a time.

  289. tampayank March 22nd, 2009 at 11:43 pm

if Cashman gets overruled, he should resign…..why would any GM want to work under those conditions? I haven’t heard Henry overruling Epstein, they have no problems w/ letting guys walk and they’ve been pretty good the last 5 years

  290. Doreen March 22nd, 2009 at 11:44 pm

    tampayank -

Seriously? 6 errors for Jeter in the whole tournament?

See, that makes me think not that he’s declining but that something must be wrong. He is NOT that bad.

  291. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here March 22nd, 2009 at 11:45 pm

I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves with regards to the Jeter.

  292. CaptainsCorner March 22nd, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Why would Cash resign over Jeter? He didn’t do it when he got overruled on Arod and Posada.

  293. NITRO March 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 pm

You guys really think Hal Steinbrenner is going to push Jeter out the door?

Hal admitted he knows little about baseball. Jeter’s agent is going to perform a spin job of epic proportion about the marketing/PR reasons to keep Jeter. Probably reference how A-Rod the cheater will become the new face of the franchise and damage the Yankee brand if Jeter leaves etc.

And Hal will buy it and give him a big deal. Cashman is probably going to resign over it though. But if you’re Hal and you have Jeter or Cashman, who do you pick? Hal will probably pick Jeter.

  294. Betsy March 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 pm

One more thing on Jeter – Whatever lack of range he showed in the WBC, maybe he was hampered by his hamstring? Who’s to say that it has fully healed?

In any case, I’m now actually sort of sorry that he’s coming back to camp as scrutiny on his play is going to be at an all-time level, at least by some folks.

  295. CaptainsCorner March 22nd, 2009 at 11:50 pm

Speaking of SS…Rosenthal has an article up that the Yanks will be fine once Jeter is not playing SS anymore.

Scouts, however, have been buzzing all spring about Ramiro Pena, 23, and Eduardo Nunez, 21, both of whom have received increased exposure with Jeter participating in the World Baseball Classic.

“They’re two of the better young kids I’ve seen … two legitimate core players for the future,” one scout says. “They’re not that far from being major-league ready — they have some tools and they know how to play.”
    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....-shortstop

I thought Pena was a nothing hitter?

  296. Yank1 March 22nd, 2009 at 11:50 pm

If Cashman re-signs because his owner decided to keep the face of the franchise for an extra year, then he’s probably doing us a favor. That would show how thin skinned he is, as the Daily News references.

Though like people said, Cashman is not going to be dealing with this Jeter issue. Hal is.

  297. Yank1 March 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Pena is a nothing hitter. Don’t know what Rosenthal is talking about.

Nunez is legit though, IF he can put it together.

  298. DT March 22nd, 2009 at 11:52 pm

    checked the box scores:

Jeter had 1 error (tonight) during the entire WBC.

not sure where that report was coming from. Maybe they counted mental errors or balls he didn’t get to.

  299. Sean Serritella March 22nd, 2009 at 11:53 pm

You can’t remove Jeter from the team. He has to be resigned because he’s getting really close to 3,000 hits. Where is he going to get his 3,000th hit? In Boston?

  300. E-gawa March 22nd, 2009 at 11:53 pm

Wow I think some people are over reacting.. The thing to remember is that this is spring training. No matter what MLB tries to make this tournament out to be.. it’s still spring training.

  301. Peter Abraham March 22nd, 2009 at 11:54 pm

It’s pretty ridiculous how so many people are overreacting to a few meaningless games in March. The Japanese team started practicing together in January for this event. The United States “team” had three days.

Meanwhile they went through a bunch of injuries, roster moves, etc.

The schedule was so screwed up, the players barely got any practice time. Jeter didn’t play well but none of them really did.

If he had made that throw today in Port Charlotte nobody cares. But because he did at Dodger Stadium on ESPN it’s a big deal? It’s March no matter how you slice it.

Jeter is in decline but he’s still a better overall shortstop than nearly all of the other shortstops out there. The Yankees have far more problems than shortstop.

I also got a chuckle out of the idea that Cashman would resign over Jeter. He didn’t want A-Rod and he didn’t resign then. He gets paid big money for a GM and obviously has no problem dealing with assorted Steinbrenners.

  302. carl March 22nd, 2009 at 11:54 pm

Sean he would be on the bench in Boston.

  303. m March 22nd, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Relax on Jeter’s defense. It’s only spring. Wait until the lights go on. :)

  304. Giuseppe Franco March 22nd, 2009 at 11:55 pm

This is not nearly as big of an issue as the media and fans think.

Jeter will move when he’s asked to move. He’s a team player and he knows he’s slowing down.

Even the legends have been forced to move toward the end of their careers (Yogi and Mantle) and he’s certainly no different than those guys.

I wouldn’t want to be the guy who succeeds Jeter at shortstop, but everyone knows, including Jeter, what’s best for the team.

  305. Countdown March 22nd, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Jeter has turned into Bill Buckner.

  306. m March 22nd, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    carl,

Are you serious? You think Lowrie with that million-watt smile would beat out Jeter?

  307. Sean Serritella March 22nd, 2009 at 11:58 pm

carl, I kind of knew that. I used Boston for the, “drama” effect.

There’s lots of baseball to play between now and the end of the 2010 season so it’s a little premature to write Jeter’s obit.

    Atleast Jeter doesn’t have a madam….

  311. FrontRow March 23rd, 2009 at 12:01 am

I can’t believe people are killing Jeter

He has represented the organization with nothing but class. He is the exact opposite of A-Rod.

  312. carl March 23rd, 2009 at 12:02 am

I think Jeter would be on the bench. His defense doesn’t exist.

  313. Sean Serritella March 23rd, 2009 at 12:02 am

Holy smoke! It’s 12:00 AM! I have to be in bed!

  314. Countdown March 23rd, 2009 at 12:02 am

“I also got a chuckle out of the idea that Cashman would resign over Jeter. He didn’t want A-Rod and he didn’t resign then. He gets paid big money for a GM and obviously has no problem dealing with assorted Steinbrenners.”

How do we know that’s true, Peter?

I don’t recall anyone reporting at the time that Cash didn’t want to resign ARod (including you, Peter).

It’s only now, with the endless parade of negative press (steroids, Madonna, Divorce, Hookers, Dominatrix, Hip surgery) do we “hear” from beat writers that Cash was against ARod all along.

I just can’t help thinking, if that’s true, then we would of “heard” it in real time.

  315. O'Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), 'Watching AL be the 2nd coming of Rickey Henderson' March 23rd, 2009 at 12:03 am

Yeah that’s right Pete because Jetes was clearly playing that game like he didn’t care right ? Look age catches up that’s the reality and he didn’t look good at SS in the WBC, he has alot to improve on for 2009 but right now what we saw wasn’t good.

OTish but Eduardo Nunez needs to be patient to even be put anywhere on the field. He’s a great glove, has more range, yes sadly more range than #2 but he is a project when it comes to hitting w/ patience.

  316. Betsy March 23rd, 2009 at 12:03 am

LOL I appreciate you defending DJ, Pete, but just you make it sound like the Yankees have tons of problems. I guess we can assume you’re picking them to finish a distant third in the AL East?

Again, maybe Jeter’s hamstring is still not completely healed. As to his hitting, boy we have high standards for this guy. He should have won the MVP in 2006, he was fine in 2007 and because his stats (after playing with a nearly broken hand) were way down on 2008, he’s in major decline? I venture to say that he will have a very good 2009 – and I’m confident in that.

  317. jack March 23rd, 2009 at 12:05 am

I agree Pete– we have far more issues this year than Jeter.

  318. Giuseppe Franco March 23rd, 2009 at 12:06 am

He has represented the organization with nothing but class. He is the exact opposite of A-Rod.

    ———–

What does class have to do with the issue of his defense?

    It doesn’t.

Everybody here loves Jeter. But the fact is that his defense is in steep decline and he’ll have to move from SS sooner rather than later.

He’ll do what’s best for the team. He’s prided himself on being a leader his entire career and knows his time at SS is coming close to an end.

  319. carl March 23rd, 2009 at 12:06 am

If Jeter is playing hurt, he should be held in the same regard as Cano and Marte.

  320. DT March 23rd, 2009 at 12:07 am

Without Jeter it would be complete chaos.
The captain runs a tight ship.
He keeps the Arod circus off the field.

    if DJ leaves –

you’ll see Arod hookers on the field between innings.

Madonna songs will be played during the 5th inning instead of the sacred YMCA.

Alex will take off his uniform top and sun himself in LF if a pitcher is taking too long between pitches.

During pitching changes, Arod will pull something from his uniform back pocket – he’ll then preen, smile and kiss the mirror before putting back in his pocket.

During at bats Alex will wear NYY logo earphones not connected to anything.

  321. Giuseppe Franco March 23rd, 2009 at 12:09 am

I don’t recall anyone reporting at the time that Cash didn’t want to resign ARod (including you, Peter).

    ———–

Cashman stated many times that if A-Rod had opted out then the team was going to go in a different direction.

He said that a number of times.

So when A-Rod wasn’t getting the offers he sought – he called Hank Steinbrenner and worked out the deal.

It was a big surprise when the news started trickling in that A-Rod was coming back to the Yanks because the team had clearly moved on to try and find a new third baseman.

  322. Countdown March 23rd, 2009 at 12:10 am

    Giuseppe Franco-

when has jeter ever been a “leader”?

Yes, he was hitter clutch up to 2006, until injuries and age took their toll, but he has never been a club house “leader”.

  323. m March 23rd, 2009 at 12:10 am

    Countdown,

Don’t know for sure how we know that Cashman didn’t want Alex back, but we know it.

Probably had something to do with 1)the opt-out even though the Yankees gave the ultimatum and 2)the attitude after the opt-out. And this is a quote, “That ship has sailed”.

So he was probably less than happy that Al was given a real sweetheart of a deal. And for no less than 10 years. Of course he signed on again, but personally I think that’s so he could set the ship back on the right course.

  324. vinny-b (Girardi, Pettitte, Mo, Matsui, Gardner = my top 5) March 23rd, 2009 at 12:10 am

“If Cashman re-signs because his owner decided to keep the face of the franchise for an extra year, then he’s probably doing us a favor. That would show how thin skinned he is, as the Daily News references”

you can call Cashman what you want. “Thin-skinned” probably isn’t one of them, tho

  325. Betsy March 23rd, 2009 at 12:10 am

GF, I agree with you, but there is a large contingent of Yankee fans (not just here) that basically think Jeter is through. I’m confident he is going to be very good with the bat this year – what about you?

  326. T-Dot March 23rd, 2009 at 12:11 am

    Can’t judge Jeter by stats.

Watch the guy play— he isin’t the player he once was. He IS declining. His defense is a huge liability now.

His power is all but gone, he stole 11 bases last year, his OBP has been declining and his clutch hitting has completely disappeared.

Yes, he is still one of the better shortstops, but that is saying more about the poor quality of ML short stops than Jeter’s ability at age 35.

You cannot throw out stats, watching him play everyday, it should be apparent he is not what he once was.

I don’t have to wake up until 9:00 AM so..

Jeter has 2535 total hits for his career. He has 465 to go until he reaches 3000. He’ll have to average 155 for the next 3 years to get there.

  329. vinny-b (Girardi, Pettitte, Mo, Matsui, Gardner = my top 5) March 23rd, 2009 at 12:12 am

and I often wonder if Miguel Cabrera would now be at 3rd base.

(if he can even still play 3rd)

  330. m March 23rd, 2009 at 12:14 am

The closer Jeter gets to 3000 hits the better for the Yankees. Did you guys see him crank out the hits to top the hits in YS record? Right out of the gate, boom, boom, boom.

  331. Countdown March 23rd, 2009 at 12:15 am

    M-

remember that the Yanks said they would not negotiate with Al if he opted out because they would lose the $30 million subsidy from the Texas Rangers.

Cash’s remark after Al opted out was fitting, if only because nobody really foresaw the fire storm of opting out during the final game of the world series would kill the market and Al would have to come back, hat in hand, and eat the $30 million loss.

  332. Redding March 23rd, 2009 at 12:15 am

Jeter is through at SS. He can still be a decent hitter, but he MUST change positions.

Jeter made TWO costly errors to lead to insurance runs in this WBC alone. Infact, if Wright had not gotten that huge hit against Puerto Rico, Jeter would have been the Goat of the WBC.

  333. Giuseppe Franco March 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 am

    ——–

Oh please. You didn’t really ask that question did you?

He’s not only the face of the Yankees but many consider him the face of baseball.

Those are some pretty good credentials.

Thurman Munson was a pretty good leader and had a very similar role with teammates and the media that Jeter has now.

  334. LLIME March 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 am

  337. Betsy March 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 am

GF, I agree with you, but there is a large contingent of Yankee fans (not just here) that basically think Jeter is through. I’m confident he is going to be very good with the bat this year – what about you?

    ————

    I think he’ll have a typical Jeter season as long as he stays healthy (.300 -.310 , 10 – 15 HR, 25 steals).

But he’ll be helped immensely be the pitching staff because this team won’t have to score a boatload of runs to win as they’ve been forced to do in recent years because of their lack of starting pitching.

  339. Phil March 23rd, 2009 at 12:22 am

    Giuseppe,

Munson and the press did not get along terribly well. He was a grumpy guy and a lot of reporters flat out didn’t like him. Sparky Lyle once corrected someone who characterize Thurm as moody, by saying moody people are nice all of the time, Thurman’s just mean.

  340. m March 23rd, 2009 at 12:22 am

I think we’re just worried about getting through ’09 right now. And Jeter hasn’t declined to the point that he can’t be SS for the next season.

Wait and see is the proper approach. If you guys don’t think Jeter can play SS at 35, when will Alex be unable to play the field? Oooh. Loaded question there.

That’s what I think, too, GF – I’m not sure what else folks expect from him at this point. That’s still a pretty darn good year…..His teammates will have to pretend they still like want him on their team – you just know they’re privately wishing Jeter would stay away, lol.

    =====================================
    Sis ~

Not sure about Korea, but I don’t think Ichrio, Johjima and Dice-K have been with their team any longer than some of the other MLB players.

That said, if there were some who were unprepared, doesn’t seem there was a reason to be. It is my understanding that camps opened early specifically for WBC participants to prepare.

Now regarding game conditioning, that is likely where improvements can be made for the next time ’round. More exhibition games during the early rounds would do wonders to keep the players loose and engaged (and maybe help boost interest/attendance).

But, what do I know. I was rooting for a Venezuela/Japan final so we could see Felix vs. Ichiro ;-)

Team USA made it a point to name Jeter the Captain of the team. He is indeed front and center of everything the WBC has done.

Obviously, MLB thinks you are insane because they market him as the face of baseball and what’s good about the game.

Why does Jeter have to take responsibility for the steroid stuff when he didn’t do any of that stuff?

Bud Selig doesn’t even take responsibility for his part in the whole steroid era and his actions helped directly fuel that mess.

He didn’t start caring until Congress started turning the heat up on him.

I highly doubt Jeter wants to extend his career by playing CF or as a utility player.

The Yankees and Jeter will mutually agree to sign him until he gets his 3,000th hit then let him walk.

Then we will trade some of our excess pitching for Hanley Ramirez. I’m sure by then Brackman, Betances, Heredia, Vizcaino, Banulous, McAllister etc. might have developed plus we’ll have Chapman and a few others. We’ll have plenty of trade chips.

I just found out I’m gonna be out of town for Opening Day, but I’m not mad cuz I’ll be in sunny Florida for a family get together :)

    Al, where in Florida?

  386. Nick in SF March 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 am

Well, wherever you are down there, don’t worry; you may be out of town, but you won’t be far from home:

    NickSF.

    Hope you are well.

Did you make a little $ this weekend on the tourney? It is a shame Cal and BC came for a cup of coffee and got back on the plane. I had a great few days of action as I have over-itis and there have been a ton of high scoring games. I am sure I will give it back next week as everyone will decide the Princeton style offense will be in vogue starting Thursday eve.

Nick- All over the place I have to see folks in Tampa, Orlando and South Beach. I’ll be a busy guy, I’m gonna try to get in front of a TV at some point to see the game however.

Hi dennis, hope you’re well too. I’ve done pretty well since the tourney started, definitely better than I’m doing in my pool. I’ve mostly been doing teasers and trying to set up middles, most of them have hit. It definitely gets tougher from here on out.

Definitely too bad about Cal, they didn’t even look good losing. The whole Pac-10 has been a bit of a letdown. Funy that Arizona, the bubble team that nobody thought should even be in the field, was the only one to get out of the weekend.

My brackets are a mess. I am just glad the scoring has been plentiful. Congrats on your plays. The Big East has lived up to the hype I guess. The rest of the way starting Thurs eve should be exciting.

Have you been to O’Reily’s in SF? I mentioned it the other day in a post re: St Pats Day. Great, Irish pub in SF. Amy and I make it a must stop every time we are in your great city..There is always a soccer game on and a big Irish Setter loping around. Great karma spot.

Never been to O’Reilly’s, I don’t think, although there have been a few nights when I’ve been to several bars on Green Street, so it’s possible I’ve stopped in. But if so, not for several years. For soccer games I’m more likely to stay closer to my neighborhood (or my old neighborhood, I guess) and go to the Mad Dog in the Fog on Haight or the Kezar on Stanyan. But anyway, I’ll keep it in mind the next time I’m out in that part of the city.

My brackets are a mess too, but all of my final 8 are still alive, so I can recover. But probably won’t.
