This A-Rod stuff is great. He is now a caricature of himself. One story is more ridiculous than the next until you reach a point where every story is the same. They all just blend together. It's like the guy at work who tells you basically the same joke every other day. Have you heard this one before? Maybe. Maybe not. It doesn't really matter because they are all the same. There's constant noise and yet I can't hear a thing. The only thing you can do with these stories is put them in the same container that you put the obligatory July 4th Fireworks articles and the Day After Thanksgiving Black Friday stories. They are already written before they happen and mean nothing.

I suppose the only thing more amusing than the media's fascination with these throwaway stories is the predictable and boring outrage of fans who read the story, whether they are defending A-Rod or offended by him. Oh Society of 2009 how strange you are.

I find it pathetic beyond belief that people would care about who Derek Jeter (or any other player) dates. You really need to get a life if that is something you spend time analyzing.

Holy crap, go outside and take a breath of fresh air. That is scary.

**********************************************************

You sound surprised, Pete. :)

What demographic of people do you think that US Weekly and People and all those $3 tabloid magazines that are found as you're checking out at every supermarket cater to?

The people who DO care. And there are apparently a lot of them too.

"Pete wants to talk baseball, but A-Rod doesn’t allow him to."

What???

I hope there is a healthy dose of sarcasm there.

"And I’m sorry, going from Mariah Carey and Miss Universe to no-name, common Minka Kelly and college seniors shows a steep decline in the quality of women he’s going to get. He won’t marry a random Playmate, but the woman he gets will only be one step up from that at best."

While it kills me to admit this because I love Derek, I think this is true. I think the real celebs - at least the A and B-list ones - won't play by the "Jeter rules" anymore. Rules are basically stand behind me, don't tell anyone we're dating because I'll deny it, and keep your mouth shut. So he has to resort to the Z-list celebs who will follow the rules. Like Minka K. She was known for nothing except dating other celebs before Jeter.

I'm on one of the baseball fan boards (shut up!) and some of us have come to the conclusion that while we always thought he would end up with some smart, nice girlfriend who maybe isn't famous, he's not. We had him all built up our minds that he's this great, noble guy who's really normal, but he's not. He's a famous guy who knows it. He's going to end up with a "hot" semi-celeb because that's what all his male fans expect. And he's insecure enough that he expects that of himself.

Does anyone notice that the tabs don't really seem to care who Derek dates anymore? They might mention it, but it's not big news like it used to be. I don't know if it's because Alex is better for news or that Derek's dates get less famous every year so they're not impressed anymore. It's only fans who try to build someone like Minka up as superfamous or hot. I guess for Derek's sake.

Oh well. Go USA tonight! Like I said, I still love the guy. Just maybe a little disappointed in him.

I guess to stay on topic, I should add that Alex is crazy and I sincerely hope he is getting counseling while he is in Vail. He can do it privately there.

Don't drag Jeter into this because Alex is getting ripped.
When you can show that Jeter dated a minor, then you can open your mouth.

Alex acts like a rock star. Always loves his name in print, good or bad. And don't forget, he was married at the time of his hooker escapades.

What Alex had going for him was the fact he is a great ballplayer. His cheating with steroids has now tainted that.

Earth to GreenBeret, if he had pitched for another club, in the present generation where pitchers aren’t allowed to go from 16 IP to 210, he may have fared better. But let’s face facts: the team you root for destroyed that young man, and because so, he cannot be compared to anything but beef gravy. Except for that one memorable year, of course.

GreenBeret7-Good point. Sounds like he’d be a borderline HOF’er.

------------------------------------------------------------

He was 26 during his first full season in 1977 and didn't even get his first start that year until the end of April because Martin didn't like him......thought he was gutless. In '79, he spend almost a month in the bullpen because Gossage was on the DL and was a closer for another month in 1980 . That cost him most likely 3 more 20 win seasons.
