Two official endorsements: NYY Steak and Yankee Stadium: The Final Season

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 31, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Other than Springsteen records and the occasional movie or television show, this blog has not endorsed much over the years.

However, these two pieces of news are worth noting.

You’ve probably heard by now that the new Stadium will have a steak house, NYY Steak. It’ll be located just inside Gate 6 and will be open all year long, including game days.

The restaurant will be modeled after The Council Oak steak and seafood restaurant at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa. The menu will be nearly identical along with the atmosphere, attention to detail and level of service.

NYY Steak isn’t open yet. But if Council Oak is any indication of what is to come, you’re going to want to go there. I had dinner there with a few friends on Saturday and it was outstanding. Put it this way, it’s where Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter go when they’re in Tampa and want a good meal.

It will be worth the trip to the Bronx in the dead of winter, that’s how good it was.

It’s also worth mentioning that the book Yankee Stadium: The Final Season is available to order now and comes out on Wednesday.

If the old Stadium meant something to you or somebody you know, pick up this book by Al Santasiere and Mark Vancil. It’s an incredibly well done keepsake of the final season. It takes you from Opening Day through the Pope’s visit, all the big games and right to the emotional finale on Sept. 21.

The photographs alone are worth the price but you also get touching passages written by some top-notch baseball writers.

This is a book you’ll enjoy the first time and keep going back to.

UPDATE: NYY Steak is now open. Call (646) 97-STEAK for reservations and information.

I’ve heard the Sydney Ponson chapter is especially heart wrenching.

  2. Rockin' Rich March 31st, 2009 at 7:55 pm

There’s also a Council Oak at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

I’m sure it’s great and if someone would like to pick up the check, I’ll be happy to investigate further.

In the meantime, it’s the food court for shleppers like me.

Pete, keep these endorsements to yourself.

I’d be pleasantly surprised if the prices at the stadium were the same as The Council Room.

40$ for a 16oz Prime dry aged is pretty standard.

I know my buddy’s going to cry and moan every game until we go there.

    Len Berman leaving WNBC 4?
Gosh..it feels like he has been there forever. Good luck Len!

Len Berman is and has always been head and shoulders above his brother.

  9. Tom in NJ March 31st, 2009 at 8:16 pm

“Len Berman is and has always been head and shoulders above his brother.”

Well, that’s like being valediction of summer school, GB.

Chris Berman is like Dick Vitele. They’ve both always been loud, obnoxious jerks.

  12. Trevor March 31st, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Anyone has a link to SI cover with CC on there?

  13. Dave42 March 31st, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Why would Jeter and Posada go to the casino for a “good meal” when Tampa has Berns, one of the best steakhouses I’ve ever been to?

Pete, I know you must have gone there at one point in your countless days in tampa, and you can’t be thinking that there is a better steakhouse than Berns in the tampa area.

  14. Tom in NJ March 31st, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Stephen A. Smith, Skip Bayless, Jay Mariotti….so much stupidity at ESPN

  15. Betsy March 31st, 2009 at 8:35 pm

I used to love Len Berman – who’s his brother? It’s not Bruce……?

Jeter in LF, Nady was hit on the elbow today – I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything. I assume he’s ok….

  16. GreenBeret7 March 31st, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Betsy, Chris and Len Berman are brothers.

  17. Betsy March 31st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Oops, that’s Bruce Beck, not Bruce Berman……nevermind, lol. I still want to know who Len’s brother is, though.

  18. S.o.S. March 31st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

“Why would Jeter and Posada go to the casino for a “good meal” when Tampa has Berns, one of the best steakhouses I’ve ever been to?”

I think if your ever in a new town and want to know where the best foods at, need to have Pacman Jones on speed dial.

    Damn GB,
I take it you hate loud and obnoxious jerks. I like Bermans nicknames he gives players.

  19. Tom in NJ March 31st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Betsy, Chris Berman of ESPN fame…

  20. Rockin' Rich March 31st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Bern’s was great back in the day. Now, not so much.

  21. Jeter in LF March 31st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

    Thnx, Betsy.

  22. Betsy March 31st, 2009 at 8:39 pm

No way………really? Wow – GB, you really could have knocked me over with a feather. I used to like Chris when he would come up with those great nicknames (back in the 80′s, early to mid 90′s) – like Bert Behome Blyleven, lol. He just annoys the heck out of me now. Didn’t Len do Spanning the World? He was great…….

    How asinine and downright annoying.

If you don’t have the money to spend at a ritzy place like that, then stay home or go to McDonalds.

    Problem solved.

Stop with the BS class warfare crap. The economy can’t rebound if everyone stuffs their money under their mattresses.

  24. Tom in NJ March 31st, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I don’t know if they are even related…

  25. Betsy March 31st, 2009 at 8:41 pm

    You’re welcome, Jeter in LF!

  26. Tom in NJ March 31st, 2009 at 8:41 pm

    Nope, there not:

Berman (no relation to ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman) grew up in Astoria, Queens, played junior high softball, went to Stuyvesant High School and then to Syracuse University. At Syracuse, he began broadcasting sports reports and basketball games.

If you’re gonna endorse a steakhouse you gotta get them to name a cut after you or something.

  31. Nick in SF March 31st, 2009 at 8:48 pm

My brother sat next to Chris Berman at the All-Star Game in SF a couple years ago. He had Berman autograph his ticket. I’m still not sure why.

  36. Tom in NJ March 31st, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Noth ing beats the Chris Berman “with leather” story from a couple of years back. Sure, it’s old and played-out- but it’s still funny.

  37. Nick in SF March 31st, 2009 at 9:00 pm

I like that Tex-MVP pick. It’s just like my dream, minus the swimming pool.

  38. Joe from Long Island March 31st, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Sorry to read about Len Berman. As a native New Yorker, I always thought he did a very solid, and professional, job. I hope he stays on the scene, and I have a chance to follow him following sports in NY. I wonder how he’d do at the games, instead of anchor duties?

The Berman’s (Chris and Len) are not bro’s.
To keep up the insanity, I think their mother was Ethel Merman.

Yes, not brothers from the same mother.

Pete – nice restaurant plug. I checked out those prices.
The LoHUD expense report is really gonna get checked now… lol

“Cutler will go to the Patriots for a 3rd round pick and Rodney Harrison”

Cutler is a very talented quarterback, but he has a lot of baggage in my opinion. He comes across as being whiny and emotionally immature and fragile. Not sure I would even want him on the Patriots.

    Don’t begrudge others.

If you really want a steak… go out and buy a nice skirt steak for about $8 – 10 ( we call it churasco )…put it out on small smokey joe ( about $20.00 certified pre owned )

and grill it up…yum. don’t hate the steak eaters!

  58. GreenBeret7 March 31st, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Mike lamb has been released by Milwaukee, but, I can’t see him as a replacement for Ransom or Berroa. He’s a bad third baseman and doesn’t play shortstop.

  59. Ace March 31st, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Why model it after a steakhouse in Tampa when we have the legendary Peter Luger and Sparks here in NYC? The Mets have blown away the Yanks as far as vendor services go with all the NY-based eateries they have included at Citi Field.

  60. PAT M. March 31st, 2009 at 11:01 pm

The Yanks looked at Lamb after Aaron Boone destroyed his knee and passed back then….He certainly is not an upgrade…Ransom will be fine for 40 games or so..According to some reports it may even be less than that as A-Rod is rehabbing ahaed of schedule…….

  61. peter January 6th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Hey if you really love steaks and want to try NYY Steak out then I found a great deal that can help you on your way. You will receive $100 worth of NYY Steak food and drinks when you pay ONLY $50!! Can’t beat that….so hurry. Here is the link:

  62. ilana sanchez January 29th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I went to NYY steak earlier this month, and the food was amazing for me. I had the filet minon, and I will say it was one of the best steaks i have ever tasted….yum. Along with a lobster tail and some delicious mashed potatoes. Of course i couldn’t eat it all, but what I was able to eat was good. I recommend you try it atleast once. One thing is that it is a bit pricey. I went with a gift card that i got from halfoffdepot. So if price is a problem for you I suggest you go online to halfoffdepot and go to the new york section. I paid just $50 and got $100 worth of their food. Trust me it is worth it, go check it out…..
