Lol…someone made the ARod=Fredo reference before I could. The out of hand wife- “I can’t control her, Michael”, the head of the family having high hopes but realizing he can’t carry the torch- “I always knew Sonny would have to go through this Michael, and Fredo…well, Fredo….”, and maybe ARod heads down to Cuba to see “Superman” perform- “Old man Roth would never watch this, but Johnny Ola knows this place like the back of his hand.”

Wang had his one and only save in an extra inning game at Baltimore. Johnny Damon hit the homerun to win it. It was June 3rd… my birthday and I was there !!!!

Great post Pete, I love the blog and have been spreading it around but I have a question: Why is it that now everytime you post it says “Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post …” the whole post used to go right into the reader. Now even when i get the wrap up email every day I have to open up a new window.

I may be completely overly optimistic but I’m guessing you’re wrong that Hughes will pitch 80 innings in the majors. Maybe I’m overly optimistic but I’m guessing the rotation will be relatively healthy and that the injuries will be mostly of the missing a start or two nature here and there. Those will be handled more by who hasn’t pitched and is available which won’t necessarily be Hughes. I expect that if Joba is healthy for most of the year and approaches his innings limit in August or September, Hughes will join the rotation and Joba will move to the bullpen. I’d put an innings guess at more like 40-50 for him though as a result.

I’m not worried about the bullpen. Its not likely that all these guys work out but there’s safety in numbers and if the starters stay healthy, the bullpen will pitch much less innings.

Brett Tomko will be just as available until June as he was at the beginning of the week. All the Yanks need to do will be to clear room on the 40-man roster and purchase his contract. They didn’t do that this week because there were no obvious DFA candidates (they already need to clear one spot for an infielder) and because they had a qualified corps of on-roster bullpen options. Tomko’s break may come when A-Rod returns and they DFA Berroa.

Then again, if Phil Coke was working out as a starter, why can’t he be a “long man”?
