Sorting through the A.L. scheduling

Ten notables from the American League schedule:
1. The Indians are looking at a meat-grinder early in the year: In the first two months and one day of the season, through June 1, Cleveland will play Boston, the Yankees and the Rays 21 times. From June to September, the Indians will play the Red Sox, Yankees and Rays a total of zero times.
2. The Angels are going to be without their best starting pitchers at the outset of the season — fortunately for them, this is a time when they will mostly face the weaker teams in the AL, and mostly play at home. Eleven of the Angels’ first 17 games are against the Mariners, Tigers and Orioles, with 13 of their first 21 games at home.
3. You could reasonably make an argument that the AL’s three best teams are in the East, and we know this: At least one team from the trio of Tampa Bay, Boston and the Yankees is not going to make the playoffs. And given the importance on the games played among the three teams, remember that after June 11, the Red Sox will be the home team for a total of six games combined against the Rays and Yankees.
Boston will play the majority of its home games against the Rays and Yankees in the first 10 weeks of the season.
4. The Athletics are fielding some young starters, like Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson and Josh Outman, and they will immediately be thrown into the deep end of the pool. Of Oakland’s first 20 games, 13 are against the Angels, Red Sox, Yankees and Rays. If the Athletics come through that stretch with a .500 record, it would be a major plus.
5. No team is probably under greater pressure to win at the outset of the 2009 season than the Detroit Tigers, because of lagging season-ticket sales, because of their top-heavy payroll, and because of the status of Manager Jim Leyland. Well, the Tigers would appear to have a decent schedule right out of the gate: 10 of their first 13 games are against the Blue Jays, Rangers and Mariners.
6. The scheduling gods will be kind to the Rangers in April: Thirteen of Texas’s first 20 games are against the Tigers, Orioles and Jays.
7. The Blue Jays may have the misfortune of playing in the AL East, but remarkably, they won’t see the Red Sox, Yankees or Rays until May 12. Until then, the Jays’ schedule is loaded with a lot of games against AL Central teams.
8. The White Sox appear to have a relatively soft schedule early in the season. Incredibly, they play a total of four games against the Rays-Red Sox-Yankees triangle before July 20th, instead playing a large share of their games against the weaker AL teams.
9. Twelve of the Rays’ final 31 games are against the Yankees and Red Sox.
10. Remember how the Minnesota Twins had to embark on the never-ending road trip last summer? Well, in April and May of this year, they’ll get a whole lot of home cooking: 23 of the Twins’ first 35 games will be in Minnesota.
What date will Bernie be playing CF for the Yanks this year?
The only blog where people think taking steroids is worst than dring while under the influence, incredible.
Just be Monday already.

Moving Forward or as I like to call it, the most ironically named album ever.
From prior thread:
Bronx Jeers –
“All I wanted was a cupholder and they built a whole new stadium!”
Children’s Book:
“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”
The obstructed view bleacher seats are not a good thing, no matter how you spin it. However, they are only $5 and at least you have access to the Stadium. Basically, you’re paying $5 to get into the stadium and find a place to stand to see the game unobstructed, I guess, if you so choose.
And apparently, they’ve sold out all $5 seats for the season, so enough people are willing to deal with the obstructed view in order to have a day at the ballpark. What else can you do for $5 these days?
All I know is I got six $5 seats for the 4/20 Oakland game and am pumped about it. The invoice doesn’t say anything about obstructed views but for $5, to be in the stadium, is pretty awesome. This is the cheapest ticket I’ve ever bought and it will be my first game, the 5th ever played in YS.
“What else can you do for $5 these days?”
Get a footlong Subway sandwich!
Doreen- You can’t even buy a grilled cheese sandwich in NYC for $5.00
is it just me or is Bernie Williams pissy these days?
Thanks Pete! I’ll definitely be going down to Borders on April 24th to meet hands down my favorite baseball player of all time!
Duffy I certainly hope your GO BU reference is referring to the might Terriers and the Frozen Four??
$5 tickets and $100 to the right usher will get you $800 seats for $105.
If you are on Twitter, Bryan Hoch is posting pics of his journey to the stadium today…
Gayle-
Yes, yes it does.
I don’t get it. “CDs (and only CDs).” What’s the big deal? I know he’s trying to promote his music, but if someone buys the CD why not sign one thing for them, whether it’s the CD or a ball or a photo? If you’re a Bernie Williams fan you want a ball or photo you can display, not the tiny little square of a CD cover.
Some of these guys are just odd.
For the YES-less, maybe this will help for this weekend
NEW YORK, April 2, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, will cap the public beta of its new high definition media player with a two-day free preview of MLB.TV Premium on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. The preview will feature five Spring Training games, including the first games at the world’s and New York City’s two newest ballparks — Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.
He’s not there to sign baseball merchandise. He’s there to promote his CD.
If he were to sign things other than the CD, it takes away from the entire promotion.
It’s not hard to figure out.
Duffy well done!!!
It’s funny, years ago (around 1989 or 1990) I went into a sports memorabilia store in Rockland County, and Bernie Williams was there for some sort of a signing. He was pretty much an unknown then, and he was sitting all alone at a table in the back of the mostly empty store (he was wearing his huge glasses that day, too).
I’m sure he’ll be mobbed at his upcoming appearances. What a difference 20 years makes.
Hey SJ44,
If you ever want to be a guest-blogger, let me know.
Free mlb.tv preview for the 4 NY exhibition games.

Who cares about Bernie’s CD?
Unless he is signing baseball stuff for baseball fans, I don’t even know why it would be posted here.
Some good news everyone:

How about because Bernie was one of the fan’s favorite players. His music is also good and it’s Pete’s blog. He can post what he wants. Find something else to complain about.
Any word on special ceremonies / happenings before the first game tomorrow at the Stadium? Or are they saving all of that for the official Opening Day?
Much rather hear about Bernie than Springsteen.
“Much rather hear about Bernie than Springsteen.”
Ok, now that’s just crazy talk.
the Daily News has a great interactive tour of the stadium

I’d rather hear about Madonna than, no, in second thought, I don’t think so.
“Free mlb.tv preview for the 4 NY exhibition games.”
where was this 2 weeks ago when we needed it?
This entire preseason has been one big promotional appearance.
Will hensign my blues traveler cd?
I’m thinking the 2 exhibitions might be on MLBN if you don’t live in the tri-state area and don’t get YES
Good to see the Yanks are re-thinking their class warfare like set up regarding who can go where and who can enjoy a beer.
Bleacher creatures will be celebrating loudly if it is true that not only are they allowed to imbibe but that they are allowed to do it in their seat(bench)
Let’s hope they don’t screw it up. I seem to remember that the biggest reason beer was revoked was because they were throwing it at fans who left early.
here’s a short article/post and good video (4 1/2 minutes) about the new stadium
http://gothamist.com/2009/04/0.....l_be_a.php
SJ44 — It’s not hard to figure out? Tell that to Bernie. He certainly doesn’t mind using his baseball career to promote his music. His own press release mentions “former Yankee star” before it mentions anything about his music. That’s a release promoting his music, and it doesn’t seem to “take away” from his promotion.
Plenty of people will show up, though — and I think many people will have balls and/or photos they hope to get signed (despite the warning) and leave disappointed.
It just seems to me that if you’re as loved as Bernie is by the fans, it won’t hurt to sign a ball or photo, as long as they buy the CD. It won’t take any longer and it’ll make fans happier.
Could care less about alcohol in the bleachers I am just glad that finally if you have a bleacher ticket you can actually get inside the stadium and roam around and not be relegated to your own little corner without being able to go anywhere BUT the bleachers
Ed-
You are so wrong if you think that it wont take longer.Have you ever been to a signing there are people who pull about 6 things out of their bag to get signed and expect all 6 things to be signed.
Having done numerous signings with people over the year and all of them are musicians I can tell you that saying in advance that you will only sign the CD is totally par for the course. Otherwise people pull out t shirts, photos, posters, magazine covers etc.
I can tell you before the signings even happen there will be too many people there, too many people that even though they know the rules in advance will try to break them, too many people that will leave disappointed and unless there is someone there making sure that bernie isnt the one having to say no every time someone pulls out a baseball he will not like it either.
Hey, anyone see how Reds GM Walt Jocketty jabbed Peter Gammons on mlbtraderumors.com. Gammons reported that the Reds let teams know that they will wait and see whether they need to move Aaron Harang during the season. When Jocketty was asked about it, he laughed it off and remarked ” I’m not going to comment on it when he doesn’t know what he’s talking about”. LOL!! I hope Gammons sees this.
You still don’t get it. It’s a music promotion. It’s not a baseball promotion.
If fans are “disappointed” because they can’t read, or ignore the notice that he’s only signing CD’s, that’s on them and not Bernie.
Like I said, it’s not a difficult concept to grasp. If some choose not to grasp it, then they should stay home.
I suspect most people understand the difference and are fine with it.
I can’t believe some people have an argument with it. Bernie does not have to sign your baseballs every time he goes out and does something. Get over it.
Is it Monday yet?
Has anyone heard the Album?
The cover is pretty cool.
I’d like to see Bernie do an unplugged Star Spangled Banner at the Stadium.
off topic:
does anyone use an ‘air-card’? No longer receive internet at work, and will need to purchase one in order to view NYY games.
never purchased/used one. If anyone has any buying tips or knowledge to pass i thank them.
“I’d like to see Bernie do an unplugged Star Spangled Banner at the Stadium.”
Rumor is Bernie will be participating in opening day. Maybe your wish may come true.
Not to stir the fires of the big ball vs. CD autograph debate but how about if you buy a CD, you can get your any (1) item signed.
I know he’s there to promote music but no ones showing up if didn’t have a baseball career.
Who wants a signed CD?
Pat sounds good but I won’t get my hopes up.
Seems like a no brainer that Bernie does the Nat Anthem.
The fans would GO NUTS!
But fan sensibilities and those of management rarely jibe.
“Who wants a signed CD?”
me me me me me!
I’d love a signed CD, too. But I don’t think I’d stand in a line to get it.
Pat, I thought I heard that Bernie will be performing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Yankee Stadium opening day…it would be cool if he did the Star Spangled Banner thought!
M
you can get one for $100 on Bernie’s site.
I’ll pass.
thought = though
Hok
he is performing at the hard rock right now.
gotcha! I knew I heard he was going to, just thought it was opening day…whoops!
SJ, do you have any knowledge of why the Yankees released Luke Greinke and Braedyn Pruitt?
does anyone use an ‘air-card’?
My husband does. Don’t know much about it other than it averages about $70-$80 a month and it’s great on road trips. The reception/coverage is good in the NY area but was spotty in some places out of the area.
Will the new stadium have wi-fi in the stands?
new post
Isn’t Take Me Out To The Ballgame on Bernie’s CD? Maybe he’ll do that Opening Day.
Does anyone know anything about the amenities OUTSIDE the stadium.
Are all the old places still there Stan’s, Bowling Alley etc?
Have new places appeared?
Stadium Pizza is the place to go if still there.
Anyone else in Boston up for a Bernie meet up? Nothing better than meeting your favorite yankee in the city despises everything to do with NY…..btw GO HUSKIES!
