RiverDogs roster set

Peter Abraham
April
5

I don’t know that this is official, but the Charleston RiverDogs list this roster on their web site.

Check out the pitching staff. They have D.J. Mitchell, Manny Banuelos, Brett Marshall and Andrew Brackman. The Yankees like the work Torre Tyson does in Charleston as manager.

It doesn’t look like any of the other minor league teams have set their rosters yet, or at least they haven’t been announced.

Taking a trip down there in June. Manny, Brackman and DJ. Wow. Can’t wait.

  2. Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), Clyde on Mike Taylor: "Round and round I go, where I stop nobody knows..."

Manny and Andrew and Marshall ..oh my.

  3. vinny-b (Girardi, Pettitte, Mo, Matsui, Gardner = my top 5)

    Manny Banuelos

becoming my favorite prospect to follow

  4. Phil

That is there official site and if you click my name you’ll see a little roster analysis.

  5. Chip

This could be the most high-ceiling rotation I’ve ever seen. Crazy part is, the Tampa rotation might not be too far behind

  6. Doreen

Ah! We had to cancel a trip to Charleston this summer. So bummed out about it. We had it all planned. River dogs. Sand Gnats and the SWB Yankees playing in Durham. Ah, well. Next year, I guess. (We miscalculated just how popular Hilton Head in August is. :( )

Anyway, we were away overnight. I did get to see that Tex hit 2 HRs and the last I witnessed myself, the Yankees were winning 7-1 yesterday. Glad to hear it ended at 10-1. I am a cautious person by nature – I NEVER count my chickens before they are hatched, but this team — well, I haven’t felt this way about the Yankees in a while. They are very confidence-inducing. I’m trying to keep things on an even keel, but I am “cautiously excited” about this season.

I thoroughly expected the Yankees to choose Berroa as the utility infielder, but am pleasantly surprised to see the choice was Pena. It most certainly indicates that these are not the Joe Torre Yankees any more. There was a terrific article in the Star Ledger this morning about Girardi, and I think this is Girardi’s team this season, not the team he inherited from Torre and that will make a difference for him.

My daughter’s school has a parent-alumni fund-raiser weekend every spring, and that’s where we were this weekend. I am taking it as a very good sign that we won in a silent auction a Mickey Mantle autographed baseball and an autographed picture of White Ford and Yogi Berra circa 1954 (?). My husband is in 7th heaven about these things (MM is his absolute favorite player EVER, with Donny Baseball coming in a close 2nd). They also had an autographed picture of Jeter, one of Mariano and a bat autographed by ARod. The photo of Mo was not a good one, otherwise, that was my choice.

The other thing that was so awesome for me today, was we drove my daughter’s boyfriend home to White Plains and it was the first time in my life that I drove across the Throgs Neck Bridge. What a gorgeous, gorgeous sight.

I am hoping that opening day does not get rained out tomorrow. Maybe the weather gods will cooperate for once? This team, and these fans are soooooo ready!!!

I care 0% what any pundit or media person or ESPN or anyone else predicts for this year. Totally ignoring it.

    Go Yankees!

And, thanks Pete for all your updates and hard work. It took me about 2 hours to read your posts over the last 24+ hours and skim the responses.

Shame on those trolls who feel the need to post as some very trusted regulars here.

Hi Doreen – Sounds like you had an eventful weekend. My highlight was going to the new Stadium Saturday, and I’m still awestruck. Hope you get to make it this season.

My wife and I are planning on going to the Scranton blog get-together in July. Hope to see you there.

  8. Sean

Looking foreward to seeing what Garrison Lassiter can do, maybe he can light a fire under Carmen Angelini. and we can have a competition between those two to be Jeter’s heir apparent.

  9. Joe from Long Island

Sean – one never knows, but, given how the Marlins conduct their business, I wouldn’t be shocked if Jeter’s heir turns out to be Hanley Ramirez one day.

  10. Brian M

No Delin Betances? I wonder where he’ll end up.

  11. Phil

    Betances will be in Tampa.

  12. Doreen

    Joe from Long Island -

We were at the Marriott Islandia this weekend.

I’m still mulling over the SWB trip. It’s a long one (drive) and isn’t it 4th of July weekend? I know there’s a couple of tickets left. We’ll see.

We have stadium tour tickets for June 20th, and we’re hoping to get to a game this season. The tour tickets are the safety net, just in case we can’t make it to a game. I am determined though. The stadium looked absolutely magnificent on television, ads and all! I suggested lunch at the Hard Rock and my husband actually said what about NYY Steak. Hmm, maybe?

  13. KP

Does anyone know anything about Addison Maruszak? He’s only 22 and his numbers were pretty solid last year. Any chance he’s the heir apparent at shortstop? I’m going purely off of numbers here since I don’t know much about him.

  14. Sean

Joe From Long Island- That would be great if non of your in house options pan out, I hope they do, there’s nothing like home grown talent, this is why Jeter, Rivera, Bernie, and now Joba is so loved.

  15. Joe from Long Island

Doreen – Take care of your husband! He’s got it!

  16. Sean

KP, forgot bout him, he was drafted last year out of USF, he put up good numbers in Staten Island last year, but being that he’s a college kid, he should put up good numbers in the NY-Penn League.

  17. KP

Thanks Sean…I know some of the stats can be misleading depending on the league they’re playing in. Anyway, looks like there are a few kids that have a chance, hopefully one of them emerges in the next few years.

  18. Josh

I like the chances of the Yankees opening the season with a sweep. The rotation Baltimore is fielding this year is guaranteed to put them in last place in the AL East.

  19. mo

Excited for opening day tomorrow, it’s just too bad that I’m working till 5:30.

Torre Tyson is a pretty cool name. Imagine Joe sitting there in the dugout like he always does, gold tooth shining, and telling Zim “I’m gonna eat his children”

  22. Betsy

I guess hope springs eternal for every team, but regardless of what the media and other assorted experts think, this is a really good Yankees team that has a chance to be pretty special. It all starts with the pitching and the Yankees have a chance to win with every starter that takes the mound. Tex has fit like a glove – I think he’s going to have a huge year. The pen (no matter what anyone else says) is full of potential and it’s still headed by the greatest closer ever. I know every manager likes his team, but Joe really seems to think this team is special – there seems to be a tremendous optimism and confidence surrounding the Yankees. This division is going to be tough, but I’ll wager that there is some seriously high quality baseball to be played all-around. That’s exciting – for me, baseball is the perfect game, and I like to see it played well.

As to Joe, I know the media is probably waiting to see how he handles the first losing streak, but I think he’s going to be fine.

I’m happy for Jorge – I can’t imagine what it felt like for him to sit on the sidelines most of last year, not being able to contribute while his team struggled. I guess he felt helpless – not a good feeling. I’m glad he’s back – the team wasn’t whole without him.

  23. Mark M.

What’s up everyone it has been awhile.

  24. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

    Welcome back baseball

  25. gayle

ESPN is totally lame. One of the great traditions of Opening Day is announcing the players of the teams and lining them up on the lines. Recently having the WS Championship banner raised YET ESPN doesnt show any of it.

  26. Trevor

Yikes! Steve Phillips joins an already annoying ESPN tv broadcast.
Looking forward to Yankee ESPN sunday night baseball. *Sigh*

  27. Nick in SF in Lake Tahoe

The Rocky statue is throwing out the first pitch. Nice.

  28. m

    Prediction time:

I don’t care who wins in the NL. I think the Yankees have a very good chance of beating them in the World Series. Everyone else is just a minor inconvenience. New York Yankees win it all!

    ————————————————————

Tyson is from St. Louis and is named after Joe Torre. His father, Mike was a team mate of Joe T.’s with the Cards.

  30. Joe from Long Island

    Watching ESPN.

    Now it counts.

  31. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

Chipper with the first hit of the season

  32. jint51

    Pete,

have the yankees made any annoucements as to what problems they encountered with the new stadium during the exhibition games?

ANd what if anything they are doing to correct those problems during the next couple of weeks?

I know some things already discussed included the net and the small manual scoreboard.

  33. Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), Clyde on Mike Taylor: "Round and round I go, where I stop nobody knows..."

    McCanns goes deep.

BTW I thought Joe Morgan was fired ?

  34. Joe from Long Island

And McAnn with the first homer. That pitch just hung there.

  35. Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), Clyde on Mike Taylor: "Round and round I go, where I stop nobody knows..."

Srsly just get Gary Thorne and Keith Hernanadez to do these games, this is just sad, monotone, not fun broadcast

  36. Rishi

Sorry – been out all weekend and haven’t had a chance to catch up on posts – has this been discussed…Alex back by the end of April potentially…

  37. Trevor

    Steroid induced homer.

  38. Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), Clyde on Mike Taylor: "Round and round I go, where I stop nobody knows..."

dammit Nady could have landed that kid !

  39. ray (sox fan)

I never saw the press release where it was announced the home run derby was being switched to the first game of the season. :)

  40. pat

Tough night for Myers in the bandbox.

  41. jennifer

Wow Myers is getting his butt kicked.

  42. Joe from Long Island

My wife has announced that she’s commandeering the high def tv to watch The Apprentice at 9:00. The things you go through in a relationship. At least it’s not the Yankees.

  43. Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), Clyde on Mike Taylor: "Round and round I go, where I stop nobody knows..."

Joe she ever does that for a Yankee game throw the remote out the window.

  44. Bombshell

Love to watch games that count noiw…baseball is finally back.

    Foolish Predictions:

NL East – Mets, Phillies (WC), Marlins, Braves, Nationals
NL Central – Cubs, Cardinals, Reds, Brewers, Astros, Pirates
NL West – Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Padres
AL East – Yankees, Red Sox (WC), Rays, Blue Jays, Orioles
AL Central – Twins, Indians, White Sox, Royals, Tigers
AL West – Athletics, Angels, Rangers, Mariners

World Series – Yankees over Dodgers

  45. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

Brett Myers is not having a good night

  46. Bombshell

Myers is getting slinged…and this team can hit apparently.

  47. Nick in SF in Lake Tahoe

Can someone throw Myers out the window?

Phillies need an Aceves, Geise, or Tomko, stat.

  48. Bombshell

    Some other foolish predictions:

AL MVP – Evan Longoria (Teixeira will be up there)
NL MVP – Hanley Ramirez (or David Wright)
AL CY – Jon Lester (or CC)
NL CY – Chad Billingsley (look out for Josh Johnson)
AL ROY – Matt Wieters (unbelievable player)
NL ROY – Jason Motte (tough choice, Cameron Maybin could break out)
AL Batting Champion – Justin Morneau
NL Batting Champion – Albert Pujols

  49. Brandon ( I Love Me Some Me), Clyde on Mike Taylor: "Round and round I go, where I stop nobody knows..."

Nick you got money on this game ?

  50. Nick in SF in Lake Tahoe

Let me put it this way Brandon: It’s not love of Philly that’s making me bitter. :(

  51. GreenBeret7

99 players have homered in their first ML AB. Only one player, Bob Neiman has ever hit homers in his first two ML AB. In his first game, Neiman homered in his first two at bats for the St. Louis Browns in 1951.

  52. ansky

lots of returns for the riverdogs.
Abe Almonte, Walt Ibarra, Angelini, interesting.

  53. tishbi

I would like to know more about our minor leaguers, can anyone recomend a good site.

  54. Peter

How about a statue of a hypodermic needle? That about sums up this latest crop of Yankees, especially when you compare them to those legends.
No offense to Jeter and Mo, but I’m not immortalizing any of the steroid-era players. I appears at some point, someone will write a story about every player’s performance-enhancing drug adventures.

  55. Joe

I live in Charleston, so it’ll be great to see all these big prospects in Riverdogs uniforms for the first time on Thursday, when they play the Rome Braves.
