This release from the Orioles:

Vice President of the United States JOE BIDEN will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to today’s Opening Day game. The Orioles will play the New York Yankees at 4:05 p.m., with pre-game ceremonies scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Born in Scranton, PA, Biden moved to Delaware at a young age and at 29 became one of the youngest people ever elected to the United States Senate. Prior to his election as Vice President of the United States, Biden spent 36 years representing Delaware in the Senate, including 17 years as Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and 11 years as Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Biden will be the first sitting Vice President ever to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Biden’s giving the commencement address at Syracuse….the year after I graduated, of course!

While I’m not a Bush guy, I have to say his pitch in 2001 was not a bad toss at all. Decent break.

Over/under on how many members of the 2008 lineup would have chased it?

  3. gary busey's face April 6th, 2009 at 10:18 am

f him. maybe he should do a little searching and find a “website number” that can teach him how to throw.

  4. Betsy April 6th, 2009 at 10:18 am

That’s pretty cool – I hope the weather cooperates. Man, April weather in the northeast stinks

  5. ANSKY April 6th, 2009 at 10:18 am

    Jeers –

Last year Cano & Melky would have swung between bounces if it had bounced. And Pavano would have pulled a muscle while handing him the ball before the pitch.

  6. vinny-b (Girardi, Pettitte, Mo, Matsui, Gardner = my top 5) April 6th, 2009 at 10:22 am

isnt Joe Biden the videogame fan?

  7. ANSKY April 6th, 2009 at 10:24 am

So Posada says the new batter’s eye (of the restaurant’s tinted windows) is fine from the batter’s point of view, but when seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand as a catcher the background is the diamond vision above the batter’s eye.

The screen can’t be animated when someone’s getting ready to hit, but I could still see that as a potential problem.

  8. jennifer April 6th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Oh joy, so glad I’m missing this.

  9. Steve B April 6th, 2009 at 10:28 am

    What’s the weather situation?

Already see that Sox/Rays and WSox/Royals are postponed.

Sterling’s call for Teixeria: ‘A TEXT message’

  11. Ziny April 6th, 2009 at 10:31 am

Peter, you thinmk the game is going to go on schedule? It seems as it is is going to rain cats and dogs (and all the animals in between). I live in DC, so yeah. Keep us posted!

  12. carl April 6th, 2009 at 10:31 am

Weather is going to be fine… mostly cloudy from 2 PM on, only 20% chance of rain.

  13. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story April 6th, 2009 at 10:32 am

I have class from 2.30-5.00, praying that we get out early, but since we left early last week I don’t have very high expectations.

  14. Ziny April 6th, 2009 at 10:34 am

I’m going to the game on wednesday night!

  15. Richard C April 6th, 2009 at 10:35 am

I have no interest in making predictions but I would like to offer this for my team for 2009 at this time.

I pray that energy and spirit moves within each player and within the team as a whole in such a way that the Yankees are all healthy, happy and always competitive.

I pray that they find the Passion and the Purity that they each played with as Little Leaguers, ignoring the illusion that whirls around them now.

I pray that Yankee batted balls find the holes in the infield, the grass and gaps in the outfield and The Fence. That Yankee pitched balls always find their intended spots with great velocity. And that opponent batted balls effortlessly find and fall into Yankee gloves.

I pray that Yankee fans support all Yankee players with their energy, Love and cheers, all the time, especially the struggling ones.

    Go Yankees!!

    Thank you Peter.

mlb website says the KC/White Sox game was postponed due to COLD!

  17. Eric April 6th, 2009 at 10:38 am

Drafted my fantasy team in a 10-team league last night, what do you guys think? My lineup is stacked, I think my bench is pretty deep and I really like the upside on my pitching, but I feel like some of my starters are a little bit risky.

    C Jorge Posada
    1B Prince Fielder
    2B Mark DeRosa
    3B Aramis Ramirez
    SS Jimmy Rollins
    LF Carlos Quentin
    CF Grady Sizemore
    RF Milton Bradley
    UTIL David Ortiz
    Bench Chris Iannetta, C
    Bench Shin-Soo Choo, LF, RF
    Bench Jose Lopez, 2B

    P Jair Jurrjens
    SP Jake Peavy
    SP Jon Lester
    SP Yovani Gallardo
    SP A.J. Burnett
    SP Adam Wainwright
    RP Joakim Soria
    RP Bobby Jenks
    RP Huston Street
    Bench Brad Penny, SP

  18. GOD April 6th, 2009 at 10:40 am

No problemo, Richard C! I’ll take care of everything.

  19. pat April 6th, 2009 at 10:40 am

MLB Network predictions: Verducci, Reynolds, Leiter and Wiliams had Yanks winning East and Sox WC. All the rest had Sox winning East and Yanks WC except Magrane who had Sox and Rays winner and WC.

    Interesting:
For all the talk about the AL East being the strongest division in baseball, the Yankees are the only team in the division that did not have a losing record against any AL East division team last year.

“mlb website says the KC/White Sox game was postponed due to COLD!”

They weren’t lying. It’s 30+ degrees here in Chi-town. We had snow last night. It’s times like these when I wish I lived in Hawaii.

  21. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story April 6th, 2009 at 10:45 am

So glad I live in NY and not chicago…

  22. MikeEff April 6th, 2009 at 10:46 am

Eric–nice team–surprised you were able to get both rollins and grady–sweet. good thing you picked up choo–i’m not sure how many games bradley will end up playing. you have 2 great catchers too! pen as well as starters. i like the idea of using De Rosa for yr 2nd baseman — good job!

  23. pat April 6th, 2009 at 10:46 am

ESPN had the accu-weather.com guy on this morning and he says the Yanks/O’s will get the game in today.

  24. MikeEff April 6th, 2009 at 10:46 am

    dang it, i forget i shouldn’t use dashes…

Overlooked in the barrage of posts over the last hour was Pete’s prediction that the Yankees big crisis this season would be Arods marriage to Yoko Ono. Now that’s LOL funny. Good one Pete.

Still, I can’t imagine the co-op board of The Dakota allowing Arod to re-surface John Lennons white room with mirrors.

Posted this a few threads earlier…

Game forecast says 40% chance of showers and low-60s for today’s game…I hope the showers pass and they get to play.

peter did i get blocked cuz for sum reason when i used my computer at home i cant send no comment or anything. But when i used other people computer it works i have no idea whats happening.

  30. Eric April 6th, 2009 at 11:01 am

Mike – I had the 6th overall pick in the draft and used it to take Grady, then somehow managed to absolutely steal Rollins in the 2nd round with the 15th overall pick. I was originally going for Iannetta at catcher & Choo in RF, but I managed to nab Posada and Bradley ahead of both of them. I really like DeRosa too as he can play 2B, 3B, LF, and RF, so I’ve got a lot of redundancy built in.

  31. Jeremy April 6th, 2009 at 11:01 am

Any idea or predictions of who will throw out the first pitch for the Yankees home opener?

  32. Ty W. April 6th, 2009 at 11:02 am

It’s true afterall: global warning is a hoax.

    global warming

  34. Hokiehill April 6th, 2009 at 11:04 am

    $20 says he bounces it.

I saw Bush throw in that 1st pitch…security was insane while he was in the park…snipers, extra metal detectors, dogs, etc…pretty crazy stuff.

  35. Hokiehill April 6th, 2009 at 11:06 am

yankeefan91, it’s because you have arod fan in your posting name…

This is definitely a joke BTW….

lol i never though of that i should of figured since peter not a big arod fan.

  37. RussW210 April 6th, 2009 at 11:09 am

$20 that Biden throws a 90mph Gyroball on the left corner of the plate for a strike

  38. MikeEff April 6th, 2009 at 11:10 am

Eric, WOW hard to believe rollins fell to 15th you must have been sweating out that last pick before your turn!

  39. D-Day April 6th, 2009 at 11:10 am

Does anyone know for certain that the game is now on ESPN (as the Rays/Sox are rained out)?

I have MLB.tv, and being in the Raleigh area, all of the games are blacked out when I watch Yanks/Orioles – about 19 non-nationally televised games in the crapper. Since we’re technically an Orioles TV market, and our fantastic cable company, Time Warner, refuses to air MASN, I get shafted every season. This season is worse, as I stand to miss Opening Day. I’d get DISH or DIRECTTV, but to get them with the YES Network is very expensive…

  40. Patrick April 6th, 2009 at 11:12 am

Eric, your fantasy team is pretty stacked, good job!

  41. E. R. April 6th, 2009 at 11:12 am

Pete and I have the same pick for the AL Cy Young.

  42. Scorpio April 6th, 2009 at 11:14 am

“Any idea or predictions of who will throw out the first pitch for the Yankees home opener?”

    I’m guessing YOGI.

  43. E. R. April 6th, 2009 at 11:15 am

I don’t think I am the only one wishing a few R*d S*x players would have seaon-ending injuries when they play out in the rain today.

  44. yankee23 April 6th, 2009 at 11:15 am

Rain is pouring down here, still 5 hours til game time, though. If this keeps up, which it might, there’s no chance of a game today. But there’s some light to the west, so we may get to beat the O’s after all.

  45. MikeEff April 6th, 2009 at 11:16 am

I don’t wish season ending injuries on anyone ER

  47. m is for mojo-we got it back April 6th, 2009 at 11:18 am

    Woo Hoo! Game day. Hopefully.

    Madonna’s adoption request denied. It’s all Alex’s fault! :)

(Seriously, why a child would be better off in an African orphanage than with Madonna is beyond me.)

I’m sorry for trashing ESPN. I hope their weather predictions and today’s Accuscore prediction (61% chance of a Yankee win) are both correct!

As for weather sites, try wunderground.com, I like their radar. But I’m not liking their hourly predictions for today.

  48. RussW210 April 6th, 2009 at 11:18 am

ER, they arent playing today. But yea, I wish the Sox had the Yanks problems of last year. Lets see Beckett go down for 3/4 the season, Lester for 1/4, Ortiz break his knees, and Bay go down for 3 months. Then lets have all of their bullpen aside from Papelbon, Masterson, go on the DL for a combined half year.

Lets see how they do then.

  49. Simms April 6th, 2009 at 11:22 am

I picked John Smoltz for the CY Young but I can see Dice-K winning it

  50. m is for mojo-we got it back April 6th, 2009 at 11:24 am

Today’s game wouldn’t be cancelled if mlb had done it right by scheduling the game in Tampa. And why do the Red Sox get to host anyway?

  51. m is for mojo-we got it back April 6th, 2009 at 11:26 am

No offense, but how can Smoltz win the Cy Young if he’s only pitching half a season?

  52. vin April 6th, 2009 at 11:28 am

“Today’s game wouldn’t be cancelled if mlb had done it right by scheduling the game in Tampa. And why do the Red Sox get to host anyway?”

I know… it seems like we go through this every year.

  53. tampayank April 6th, 2009 at 11:29 am

all politics aside, President George W threw that first pitch in 2001 like a champ, it looked like a curve and he did it from the mound w/ a bullet proof vest on, that was a great moment…curious to see how Joe B does

  54. Peter Abraham April 6th, 2009 at 11:29 am

    Attention idiots:

Nobody cares about your political thoughts on this blog. Nor is this the place to make crude jokes about assassination. Keep it to yourself or go post someplace else.

  55. five iron from fenway April 6th, 2009 at 11:30 am

Red Sox cancelled – playing tomorrow.
On the payroll – who on the list is overpaid? Matsui, Damon (maybe), who else?

  56. Joe April 6th, 2009 at 11:30 am

I have no idea how all the weather sites say something different from the same hours in Baltimore

Weather.com says cloudy with only 20% chance of rain from 2 PM on, the rest seem to say there is a high probability of rain.

  57. bobmac April 6th, 2009 at 11:30 am

    THE JOE BIDEN!!! How exciting.

  58. RussW210 April 6th, 2009 at 11:36 am

Bad umpire calls is the one way MLB makes sure the Yankees don’t win the World Series. It gives the umpires the ability to tip the games based on their bias’. I am all for the Zone Evaluation.

  59. Benny ( it's Game time) Blanco April 6th, 2009 at 11:41 am

and after the first ten games the yankees record will be???

    I think 7-3

  60. Brad April 6th, 2009 at 11:47 am

The usual early April poor scheduling. Seattle at Minnesota when both have domed stadiums. The Rays playing at Boston while their domed stadium remains idle.

  61. Hokiehill April 6th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Pete, were you refering to comments that have been removed? Didn’t see the assasination stuff anywhere, but agree that’s just stupid…I heard on the radio this morning that they could not play in Tampa this week because the ballpark is being used as the staging ground for some kind of race…

but there are a multitude of other scheduling occurences that make poor use of warm weather facilities…for instance, the A’ and the Angels play each other in an opening series leaving one warm weather ball park empty…
