Based on looking out my hotel room window, it’s raining lightly in Baltimore. Some people have umbrellas, some do not.
First pitch isn’t for 4.5 hours, so there’s plenty of time for it to clear up. We’ll keep you posted.
Thanks for the update…lets hope we get baseball in
Don’t worry guys, baseball will be played today.
http://www.weather.com/weather.....undeclared
I read a great story about Bailout Field aka the Mets new stadium.thought id pass it along….http://fanzak.com/fzrants/Bailout_Field
I have tickets to todays game but live in RIchmond, VA. I decided not to venture up to bmore today and pray it gets postponed till tommorow because I can only get one day off from work. I figured hope it gets postponed and go tommorow rather then driving up today and drinking beer in my car hoping the sun comes out
The weather report here looks a bit different:
http://www.wunderground.com/sp.....1239033900
Looks like it’s going to pour in the Bronx.
Why doesn’t MLB permit the use of rainbreaking / cloudbreaking machines to get the game in?
we gonna do this thing or what…I am PUMPED, this better not get rained out
it’s raining hard here in Jersey right now….
Weather says that the rain should stop by 3pm.
LETS GET THIS GAME IN and hopefully take a .5 game lead on the Sox . . LOL LOL
Radar looks like everything should clear out before gametime.
so far I think’s its’ 2 games postponed on one of baseball’s most promoted days….Bud Selig needs to evaluate himself
“who on the list is overpaid? Matsui, Damon (maybe), who else?”
Relatively speaking they’re all overpaid but that’s for another thread.
I would say their 3B and SS are among the most overpaid on the team.

Yeah, that bastard Bud. Not only did he turn a blind eye to steroids, he can’t even control the weather!
Sabathia is the most overpaid.
I think he’s great and will be of tremendous value to the team, but he pitched way better than he is last year (imo) and he only plays every 5 days.
According to Replacement Level blog, Damon has actually been a good investment. Saving the yankees over 10 million dollars for the wins he has provided.
ALB3 – of course, he went to the NL. Overpaid? The guy fills all questions the Yanks have about a pitcher: durability, flame thrower, good control, AL proven, lefty, ace. And they gave up nothing for him. Johan Santana is making like 1 million less than him per year, the Mets had to give up several prospects to get him, and Johan had injury concerns (as we saw at the end of the year last year and this spring training). I think it was a fair price.
what is selig supposed to do tampayank? control the weather or not promote opening day?
How about scheduling the first week of games in warm cities and covered venues?
“I would say their 3B and SS are among the most overpaid on the team”
I’d say Jeter and Burnett are the two most overpaid Yankees. Won’t penalize Matsui for injury. When he’s played, he’s earned his keep IMO. Also think Damon has been earning his.
Anybody who was stuck last year at opening day can appreciate the fact that these 2 games were called early.
“How about scheduling the first week of games in warm cities and covered venues?”
Makes too much sense.
Playing in as many warm weather cities and domes for Opening Day would increase the chance of getting as many games as possible played.
Rays/Sox opening in Boston and not Tampa is stupid.
how many covered venues do u think there are? and warm cities dont stop rain
redsox rays didnt get cancelled cause of the cold… and it rains far more often in tampa than boston am i right
Why wasn’t the Rays/Sox game played in Tampa under a dome?
so what do you do about central teams playing each other? put them in a dome or west coast venue where neither of them is the home team? ;/
“redsox rays didnt get cancelled cause of the cold… and it rains far more often in tampa than boston am i right”
Never rains hard enough to penetrate the Dome.
For pitchers, I don’t look at being the ace or filling innings. They’re all supposed to give you innings. I think wins is a good indicator of whether or not you earned your money. By my own criteria, If CC, AJ, & Wang end up with 15-20 wins each, then CC would be grossly overpaid. Alex is also grossly overpaid. Jeter gets what Ichiro gets, so it’s a lot but not outrageous.
But then again, Santana makes CC kind of money, too.
So, it’s all a fruitless circular argument.
How about not scheduling the 2 coldest cities against each other? And lol @ the rain in Tampa. That was an oversight, right?
Guys. . lets think .5 lead !
jint51 -
Except of course the Rays play in a dome which prevents rainouts.
Scheduling the Rays to open in Boston and Baltimore instead of at home in a rain-out free venue is moronic, any way you want to slice it. Plus having Seattle and Minnesota square off against each other when both play in rain-out free venues? Stupid.
Mike,
I like the idea of going wire-to-wire.
wow silly me… tampa winning last yr and their new unis had me thinking they already moved into their new stadium
How about scheduling the first week of games in warm cities and covered venues?

You’d still have rain outs because there are only so many teams that play in domes and warm climates at this time of the year.
The vast majority of major league teams play on the East Coast and Midwest.
So, mojo, if the following happened:
Sabathia: 15-8, 2.90 ERA
Burnett: 18-10, 4.50 ERA
you would say Burnett did a better job earning his paycheck?
If you want to talk about overpaid. Every pro athlete is overpaid in my book.
and apparently that new stadium does have a retractable roof.. so i am officially a moron
“Rays/Sox opening in Boston and not Tampa is stupid.”
Besides, the Rays franchise would benefit more from an opening day (sell-out perhaps?), as opposed to the Sox who always have sell-outs. The Rays should be taking advantage of the opening day hype… plus maybe throw them a bone for outlasting the Sox last year.
“so what do you do about central teams playing each other? ”
Come on, no one cares about the AL central… all the best teams are in the East.
There are obviously going to be situations where you can’t schedule every team in an ideal situation, but how about at least do as much as possible. Having Tropicana Field not being used and having two dome teams play each other is silly.
“jint51 April 6th, 2009 at 11:54 am

Easy, play early April home openers in the southern cities/dome ballparks if possible…..example Boston @ TB instead of TB @ Boston; Chicago @ KC instead of the opposite; at least the Cubs opened up at Houston….not that difficult, it seems to happen every year, last year the Cubs home opener was rained/snowed out….Bud Selig is an idiot
Tom K,
I’ll play along, even though CC won’t have a 2.9 in the AL. Yes, wins is the primary factor.
Guiseppe,
The point is to minimize the number of postponed games. The Trop is sitting empty.
If you guys want to prevent the rainouts all together…then they should have spring training in April and start the season in May
..as long as there’s baseball in April, there will be rain and snow depending on your location
Just wait until they schedule an opening day in Minnesota once they have their open-air stadium built!
April is always an “iffy” weather month. Having Opening Day in warmer or domed cities doesn’t really fix anything. Eventually, those colder city teams have to return home, afterall. Can’t keep them on the road until Memorial Day.
“and apparently that new stadium does have a retractable roof.. so i am officially a moron”
LOL, I figured we’d never hear from you again.
mojo –
Well, I won’t need to play along: You are clueless when it comes to pitcher evaluation.
Scott (Kalamazoo): Why wouldn’t MLB try to schedule as many games in warm weather cities as possible for the first week of the season? For example why isn’t the Boston-Tampa series being played in Tampa?
Rob Neyer: (12:09 PM ET ) We go through this every year … The answer is that everybody wants to open at home and the people who make the schedules do the best they can to balance all the competing interests.
I know it’s impossible to have every home opener in cities where chances of weather postponements are unlikely but they can make it where the majority of the openers it won’t be an issue

I just wrote a post-seven AL and NL teams play in warm weather or roofed stadiums:
Tampa, Minnesota (this year), Toronto, LA Angels, Oakland, Seattle, Texas and then Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, LA Dodgers, Arizona, San Diego and Milwaukee.
It would be possible to host the majority of games in warm weather cities or roofed stadiums on Opening Day. You couldn’t do every game, but if you can start the season in Tampa over Kansas City, isn’t that worth it?
here’s the forecast specifically for the event at camden yards :
http://www.weather.com/outlook....._graph_tab
…somehow it’s apparently going to be sunny in the afternoon and a low chance of precipitation at gametime. Sounds like a pretty nice day for baseball actually…wish it was like that here in NY, it’s gross out here…and it’s supposed to be like torrential rain from 2pm-4pm woohoo
m is for mojo-we got it back

Agreed. It’s not rocket science.

I get it.
But you can’t make everyone happy because MLB also tries to limit the number of cross-country trips on a given road trip and you’d see a major increase in that if you tried to make the schedule out that way.
That’s a lot of unnecessary frequent flier miles and I’m quite sure the players and coaches wouldn’t want that either.
There’s a reason why MLB tries to schedule the BOS-BAL-TOR-NY trips together. Very short plane rides.
“According to Replacement Level blog, Damon has actually been a good investment. Saving the yankees over 10 million dollars for the wins he has provided.”
The very same blog did projections for all the Yankees and listed their 2009 salary and whether they are overpaid or underpaid. According to his numbers Jeter, A-rod, Matsui and Posada are overpaid but pretty much everyone else is worth the money. I’m not sure about Burnett and the blog isn’t loading at the moment so I can’t check.
Hey Selig get your head out of your ass and do something right for once.
Speaking of fantasy baseball, we had our Yankee-blogger fantasy draft last night and I got both This Purist Bleeds Pinstripes AND Was Watching. I really lucked out when the guy right before me (in the 2nd round) went all “halo-effect” and selected the Yankee Chick.
I can’t seem to get any posts about the new stadium through the filter but I am going to post a link to a Stadium Insider review that also has some links to other blog stadium reviews including one by Alex Belth.
I feel the stadium does fall short in many ways even beyond the obstructed views and I think these reviews sort of sum up these issues.

“Never rains hard enough to penetrate the Dome.”
Not in Milwaukee. Their roof leaked.
One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen at a ballgame.
The Miller Park dome roof was closed – but peeps behind the first base dugout had umbrellas to keep dry. True story.
Peter, the sun is shining in parts of DC so its safe to say that the game will go on… :0)
This is the pitcher people cried about us not getting?
I think I’ll take CC.
that TEX intro was amazing!!!
