Tomko will close in AAA

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 07, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Our man Chad Jennings has a blog post up about the plans at Scranton.

Brett Tomko, who worked as a long reliever in camp, is the closer. Um, OK.

Austin Jackson will start out hitting sixth as he breaks into AAA.

Angel Berroa is with Scranton. He was left off those rosters the Yankees sent out earlier today for some reason.

Dan Giese has not yet cleared waivers. But the Yankees do expect him back, it seems.

Nice. The 8th inning is looking shaky as of now. If Tomko does well in that role, I’d bring him up here to be our SU man.

  2. Tom K April 7th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

Why on earth would you want Brett Tomko to be a setup man?

  3. Betsy April 7th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

They have their reasons – it’s interesting, anyway. However, it will be problematic if the Yankees need a long man as Tomko will not be stretched out. Actually, now that I think about it, it’s kind of stupid. He should be in AAA preparing for a possible return trip to NY – where he would be used as a long man.

  4. Joe from Long Island April 7th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Betsy – maybe they have some leads for possible deals for him as a short man?

  5. Trevor April 7th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

QVC is doing a show from YS if anyone is interested. Bernie Williams coming on.

  6. Rich April 7th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

So I guess this means Aceves is up if we need a long man

  7. Global Warming April 7th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Hopefully Tomko never sees pinstripes. Yeah he had a nice spring training but so what. The guy has been mediocre his whole career.

  8. tampayank April 7th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

anyone else watching MLB tonight on MLB Network? They cut to big at bats live at all the games going on and shows some BP before upcoming games on the west coast(showed Manny and the Big G). Great coverage, they’ll have this on daily, this show blows everything on NESPN away.

  9. Yanks 87 April 7th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Why was Joba’s comments about New Yorkers actual news?

  10. Trevor April 7th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

What did Joba say about New Yorkers?

  11. SJ44 April 7th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

How is the 8th inning looking “shaky”. They have played a grand total of ONE game.

    Geez, get some perspective.

NOTHING looks shaky after ONE game.

  12. jint51 April 7th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

if arod said what joba said people would be callng for his head

  13. Betsy April 7th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

I haven’t watched MLB really in awhile. I’m tired of analysts (not just on this network, but on ESPN, etc….) bashing the Yankees and am basically living out the motto of ignorance is bliss. Whatever negative stuff they spew out about the Yankees can’t bother me if I don’t hear it. I miss their programming like Prime 9 and Seasons, though.

We are not turning to Tomko for the eighth. We don’t have 8th inning issues.

  16. vtred April 7th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

When the cop pulled him over for his DUI in Nebraska, he asked Joba what he thought about New York— he said New Yorkers were rude and bad drivers or something like that

There’s a video of it on the Post Website

I understand there was a lot of angst in the game thread yesterday, followed by considerable angst about the angst and discussions about registration, etc.

I don’t know about all that, but if you were one of the people who became worried about the season because of yesterday’s result, you might want to consider watching tomorrow’s game in a safe place:

  18. Vader April 7th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Dosen’t everyone realize that negativity sells…that is why the guy who shoots ten people gets above the fold and the guy who saves ten is second page news.

  19. tampayank April 7th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

they haven’t been that negative towards the Yanks, Magraine(annoying, thinks he’s funny and keeps pimping his Rays) and Reynolds have been; but Leiter usually talks good about the Yanks….but the cut ins to big at bats around the league definitely makes the show a lot better than before when it was only analysis

  20. SJ44 April 7th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

They did the same thing with Scott Strickland last year and another veteran guy (the name escapes me at the moment….Jim something) two years ago.

They do this so the younger guys like Melancon and Jackson can pitch more innings. They would rather those guys get more innings than just be used as the AAA closer since they won’t be closing, at least not right now, in NY anytime soon.

  21. Tommy April 7th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

You just know Girardi is going to have MO warming in the 8th tomorrow if we have a 1-2 run lead.

Who is he going to go to? Edwar?

  22. Nick in SF April 7th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Meanwhile, Miguel Tejada just got the Astros’ first hit of tonight’s game in Houston; Roy Oswalt could not be reached for comment.

  23. SJ44 April 7th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Jim Brower. That was the guy who closed for Scranton two years ago.

  24. Betsy April 7th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

There’s no way you can make any judgments based on one game – these guys are human and they are going to stumble sometimes. That said, you can always have concerns. I’m still concerned about Bruney because he frankly had a terrible spring and first outing last night. He’d better stop thinking ahead to his FA year and concentrate on the here and now. I don’t know if his weight is a problem (he may need to regain some), but I do know that trying to throw the ball through the wall (if that’s what he’s doing) is a recipe for disaster.

  25. Trevor April 7th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Well if that is what Joba said I would have to agree. He did say anything that wasn’t true IMO. Try driving down Flatbush, Brooklyn. :)

  26. Giuseppe Franco April 7th, 2009 at 9:14 pm

You just know Girardi is going to have MO warming in the 8th tomorrow if we have a 1-2 run lead.

    ————

    Um, no.

Mo may be superhuman but he did just have shoulder surgery. They aren’t going to push it in Game 2 with 160 more to go.

  27. Betsy April 7th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

SJ, that makes sense. I should have gone with my gut reaction, which was to realize that they didn’t just make this decision on a whim.

Tommy, Mo can not be a security blanket for this team. He’s older and coming off surgery. There’s no way Mo is going 2 innings now……and maybe not for awhile. Girardi has got to continue manipulating the pen to get the best performances out of them. I don’t care who pitches where – just as long as they get the job done.

Reynolds harps on tirelessly about “getting the ball to Rivera.” I always make sure the mute button is within arm’s length.

  29. Giuseppe Franco April 7th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

What you are going to see often with the Scranton pen is have that foursome of Melancon, Robertson, Jackson, and Claggett throw multiple innings quite a bit.

You might see Melancon throw two innings one night and then Robertson will do the same the next night.

This is part of the Yankee pen philosophy now. They are trying to condition these kids to throw multiple innings instead of just one.

They did that all season last year with both Melancon and Robertson.

That kind of conditioning can only help them at the next level.

  30. jint51 April 7th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

also, if arod said what joba did pete would have atleast two blog posts up about it already

  31. SJ44 April 7th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Mo isn’t going two innings in the second game of the year.

It may be a “big” game to the chicken littles but, its just Game 2 to those who actually make a living at the game.

  32. Betsy April 7th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Even Leiter annoyed me slightly when I happened to click it on and they were talking about CC – Leiter said to keep an eye on CC’s lack of velocity. Generally, Al is a positive guy and he knows the Yanks, so I don’t have a problem with him. MLB is basically fine – I’ve been spending so much time here and on my other major Yankee board that I don’t have much time to watch MLB network (or anything, for that matter, lol)

  33. Joe April 7th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

For those who watched SNY this afternoon… you can clearly see why YES ratings blow them away despite having worse programming.

They had THREE different segments on if Teixeria will ever adjust to the NY pressure, Plus CC vs. Jonah arguments and the subsequent Cashman bashing for passing on the deal, then they talked about Girardi being on the hot seat (after 1 game), killed our bullpen, etc. All this while praising the Mets to no end.

Adam Schein and Raissman are such SNY schills, not an ounce of objectivity in them.

  34. Vader April 7th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

I would think that if Girardi put Mo in the 8th inning of game two of the season…he would be worring more about his job than the well being of the Yankees’ season.

  39. Betsy April 7th, 2009 at 9:24 pm

I think M posted in a prior thread that Ken Rosenthal was asked how the Yankees reacted to yesterday’s loss and he apparently said they were absolutely professional – no panic whatsoever. Frankly, I would worry about them if they were freaking out over one game. This isn’t football…….This also appears to be a very loose group, with what AJ described as a bunch of really good bunch of cut-ups. I have concerns as to how good this team is offensively, but I have none as far as how together they are. They’ve got each other’s backs and they’re confident. I like this team, personality wise.

  40. ZMann April 7th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

    Tommy,

Doubt it, they won’t use him for 4 outs this early in the season. Though that won’t stop the 12 yr old panic brigade from calling for Girardi’s head if Bruney/Marte blow it tomorrow night for not having MO ready in the 8th.

Speaking of Phil, when pitching depth is mentioned, Buccholz’ name always comes up…….and not Phil. This is not a surprise, however, as when our kid struggled last year, he was lambasted by Keith Law, etc.. When the Sox’ kid struggled, nary a mention. Clay had a great spring, but Phil did too……and not just because of his stats. His cutter and change are coming along and this new power curve seems to work for him. Plus, he’s healthy and his stuff looks good. When he eventually gets recalled, I’d love for him to look to Mo and AJ to refine his cutter and curve.

I’m not going to analyze everything Tex says. As someone pointed out (not sure if it was here, though), he probably meant (by the above quote) that growing up, if he could have envisioned a perfect world, it would involve him being an Oriole. I believe Tex is sincere and honest – and that he wanted to be a Yankees. The O’s fans will deal with it in their way (unfortunately) and Tex will have to deal with it in his way.

AJ and Jeter seem to have a pretty cool relationship, so although it would indeed take some cojones, I can see Jete with a face full of Gillette shaving cream. The fun part will be seeing his victims give it right back to AJ – what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  69. Y26 April 7th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Getting off to slow starts isn’t unusual for the Yankees, who fell to 46-54 during the first month of the season since the start of 2005 – fourth-worst in the AL during that stretch. They haven’t opened with back-to-back losses, however, since dropping their first three games of 1998.

  70. gayle April 7th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

“Ill take it another step. If C.C. or A.J. only go 5 innings a game. They will be looked at as a bad investment. I never heard anyone in the media talking about Dice K inability to go more than 5 innings.”

SOS, I enjoy reading your posts, but I have to comment on this earlier post.

I will win no friends in saying this, but I really think that more and more Yankee fans are now acting like whiny Red Sox fans who complain about things like how much money the Yankees spend.

Seems the favorite thing for Yankee fans to whine about is how the media picks on them and isn’t fair. Who cares what predictions ESPN makes? Does that affect how a team plays on the field.

Nothing could be further from the truth that the media never talks about Dice-K rarely going more than five innings. It is talked about incessantly by the Boston media, ESPN, and other media outlets throughout the country.

    ray – agree 100%.

It’s kind of sad how some of us Yankee fans have developed a ‘woe is us’ attitude and think the world is out to get us. you’re right… who cares if ESPN picks us?

Speaking the truth is not the same as saying the world is out to get us.

Nonetheless, most baseball fans have an anti-NY animus. Most non-NYers hate NY.

    I don’t care either way, but it’s a fact.

    Boston Dave,
“Ill take it another step. If C.C. or A.J. only go 5 innings a game. They will be looked at as a bad investment. I never heard anyone in the media talking about Dice K inability to go more than 5 innings.”

Lol. The Fenway pen pushers are fierce. Red Sox writers behave as if they’ve been personally wounded when the team doesn’t win. It’s a little bizarre, frankly.

The rest of the media hates the fact that we spent $423 million dollars in the middle of a recession and are trying to buy a championship coming off a bad year. The world thinks of us as arrogant, insensitive, and looks at us as bullies.

People have harped on this fact all off-season.

Which shows how stupid some people are because a recession is precisely the time when people who have money need to spend it because it stimulates the economy and helps spur growth.

Joba’s video is the lead story on 11:00 news?

Hey I’d mouth off on NY drivers too if I got pulled over in Nebraska. Given his predicament at that moment, it’s politics 101.

  103. Carl April 7th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

Joba was obviously drunk when he said that. Haven’t we all said stupid things when we were drunk?

  104. BX 44 April 7th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Great… now there will be 10 reporters in front of his locker asking him about this

And be prepared for the “John rocker 2.0″ headlines from the Daily News tomorrow.

    ray,

I mentioned that a few posts later on. They do talk about it but it’s not a huge issue because the team wins. If he started losing games, it would pick up a bit more.

The only new yorkers who care about this story are mets fans.

I don’t have any Hawaiin blood but I’m not a Hawaii resident either!

MLB had been making record profits and teams were making a ton of cash. There’s a new stadium and they were coming off the first playoff-less season in a long time.

Further, next offseason has far less impact players hitting free agency. It’s quite possible they decided to spend extra now so they don’t have to pay top dollar for class-B free agents next year.

Even further, it’s definitely a lot of money no matter how you look at it but it’s over the course of about 7 seasons per player. People act like it’s $400M this year. They’re spending closer to $60M this season (plus any luxury tax) but it doesn’t sound bad to say they spent $60M this season. It sounds better to just say $400M with no additional context.

I wasn’t talking about the little people. :)

If you once watched an episode of Hee-Haw does that make you part Hawaiian?

Do the blood Hawaiians have different passports???

  113. m April 7th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

    DT,

No, but playing a Hawaiian on Hawaii 5-0 makes you one.

Nope, they can come and go in their double-hulled canoes as they please.

Do other states have these strict blood rules? Do the residents have to wear identifying R’s on their clothing? This is so confusing… I was led to believe that this kind of stuff wouldn’t matter after January 20th. :(

Yes. In Arkansas, you can only get a birth certificate if you can prove that your parents are first cousins.

    DT,

Thanks. I had successfully repressed my Tiny Bubbles flashback. And now it’s resurfaced.

True story. Went to the Don Ho show in middle school and went backstage to meet the singer. Well, he was sloshed. All I can remember is the slobbery kiss on the cheek.

There is nothing worse than a sloshed Ho.
