Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!

I realize that many of you are reading this from your iPhones and Blackberrys as you line up on the George Washington Bridge to plunge into the icy depths of the Hudson River.

But before you do, the LoHud Yankees Blog Research Staff looked far back in baseball history and discovered that is possible to lose the first two games of the season and then win the World Series. It took several seconds to find a team that had done so, that team being the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies.

In total seriousness, calm down. Listen to your captain.

“It’s two games,” Derek Jeter said after the game. “Just two games.”

Nady sucks. My only problem with the team.

  2. Spiced Ham April 8th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

Yeah. But if they lose tomorrow, I am jumping!

  3. Phil April 8th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

People will forget about this inauspicious start after we’ve gone through the rotation a few times.

  4. Doreen April 8th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

What the heck does Jeter know?!

    j/k, of course.

    HIT THE BUTTON!!!! NOW!!!!!

j/k. yeah we’ve had 2 games of scoring 5 runs and still can’t win. yet. i dont like giving away these early games as ” get the jitters out” games or anything like that, but it is still early. no need for that button. yet. i hope; :S

  7. Um.... April 8th, 2009 at 11:42 pm

    Yankees also lost the first 2 games in 1985, 1983, 1982, 1980 and 1979.

And we know how ALL those turned out.

World Series HERE WE COME! Starting 0-2 GUARANTEES IT!

  8. DominicanYank April 8th, 2009 at 11:43 pm

I’m not one of those on the ledge but I hope “just 2 games” doesn’t turn into “it’s only April” and then “it’s only May…”. We kept hearing that last year.

  9. G. Love April 8th, 2009 at 11:44 pm

A little harder to find positives about tonight.

Wang was horrid. I have faith he’ll get back on track, but man was he just bad tonight.

I understand the frustration because these first 2 games feel a lot like last season. Falling behind early. Going to the bullpen before the 5th. Playing catch up.

That was last season’s calling card.

Still, the team is fighting it’s way back.

Ransom just missed a game tying homer.

Cano, much to my surprise, looks very good at the plate.

Jeter hit a ball in the air and out of the park.

    The pen tonight was excellent.

The starting pitching will straighten itself out, but man it makes me sick to lose a series to Baltimore to start the season.

These are the teams the Yankees should be bludgeoning and when they don’t, it’s seriously frustrating.

I’d like to see AJ play stopper tomorrow. Go out there with some swagger and pitch 7 innings.

He does that and the rest of the team will win the game.

This constantly spotting the team a few runs early in the game has to stop.

    carl,

nady doesn’t suck but he won’t have a high obp or play good defense.I almost forgot he can’t run the bases and doesn’t have any speed

  14. Jeter in LF April 8th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Swisher does need to start ASAP. Wearing out pitchers helps a lot when the offense isn’t running on all cylinders, and that’s what he does best.

  15. Jeremy April 8th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

It’s the 2nd game of the season.
I remember sitting at the last game at the stadium thinking “Well if they win tonight, they’re still not out of it, we’ve still got a chance”

    Sa’ll gonna be a’right!

  16. ANSKY April 8th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Of course Pete had activated the software that tells him when I’m typing a comment so he should start a new thread. Here’s the theseis I was crafting & posted a few minutes ago. mine. By the way … perfect picture for these hard times, Pete. :)

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cashman should talk with the Steinbrenners about a 50-player trade where we swap rosters, top to bottom, with Baltimore. Clearly they’re a far better team than the Titanic of a team we have, which one can only conclude after these two games is doomed for a pathetic 0-162 season. Where’s Carl Pavano we need hi … SNNNFFFFFF (deep inhale whiffing of smelling salts followed by violent bug-eyed head shaking) Wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-woooo-ooooahhh … waitaminnit … sorry … sarcasm so overwhelming I passed out. I’ve seen harsher game threads. It’s a loooong season, and there will be 160 more opportunities. Opportunities for wins … not for more brutal game threads.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I might add … “Shoulda brougth Bernie back, we shoulda gotten Manny, shoulda signed Sheets instead of CC, shoulda traded Wang for a Tampa pitching prospect, but it woulda been A-Rod’s fault regardless.”

  17. GreenBeret7 April 8th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

An odd start to the season throughout baseball. Almost all of the top starters have been knocked around, so far. Lee, Lincecum, Lester, Sabathia, Wang, Halliday, Verlander and on and on. That’s a good reason not to be concerned. Things will get back to normal.

  18. the long island yankee April 8th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

swisher brings some energy to the game and needs to do more than pinch hit.he is better than his last year numbers

  19. Al from BK April 8th, 2009 at 11:52 pm

My problem is that Ransom is a butcher at third. Our 1 and 2 starters got destroyed for basically the same reason no command! I just hope Burnett pitches like Burnett tomorrow.

  20. Andrea April 8th, 2009 at 11:53 pm

jeter in LF: I’m with you. Just kind of sad.

The offense is good though. How many times last season did the team score 2, 1 or 0 runs? At least we know this team can score some runs.

Talking all day long and playing music loud does not equate to “bringing energy to the team”. There was possibly one play in right that could have been made. Of course, if the pitcher hadn’t allowed the ball to be hit that far, there’d be no reason to talk about it.

  22. Christina April 8th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

It’s two too many games if you ask me. As far as I am concerned, the season is over.

Good post, GLove – nice summary. It’s hard for me to think about the positives after a game like this, so I appreciate you pointing out that there were quite a few.

Looking forward to AJ tomorrow – if he pitches well, everything will look better.

I would love to see Swish in the lineup at this point, but it’s not going to happen

    GB7,

Add Cy Young winner Brandon Webb to that list. James Shields didn’t do so great either.

  28. Nate April 9th, 2009 at 12:05 am

A.J. Burnett will win the Cy Young. In my two money leagues I’ve predicted it and drafted him. (Full disclosure:…I also drafted Phil Hughes.)

The offense will be a lot better than last year if only because Posada and Matsui are healthy.

  32. Zack April 9th, 2009 at 12:08 am

Time will tell! My only concerns are that 1) it hasn’t been just a little bad, it’s been really bad, and 2) we heard statements like “it’s just two games” many, many times last year.

I’m patient and they likely will have a good season. The real question will be can they really compete in the AL East.

  33. Al from BK April 9th, 2009 at 12:08 am

“jeter in LF: I’m with you. Just kind of sad.

The offense is good though. How many times last season did the team score 2, 1 or 0 runs? At least we know this team can score some runs.”

Yes unfortunately those runs are being wasted by the starters. The pen has looked fine as well its just that some starter eventually needs to go 6 innings.

  34. Boston Dave April 9th, 2009 at 12:09 am

don’t worry, Swisher will get his at bats. It’s two games.

Damon will get an occasional day off as will Nady and Matsui (against the occasional lefty).

There is no need for panic moves by Girardi. The fans can panic if they feel like it after 2 games. The players and coaches can’t, don’t, and won’t.

  37. Jeter in LF April 9th, 2009 at 12:13 am

Starting Swisher wouldn’t be a panic move, it would be a realization that he is a better fit for a team that wants to go back to being grinders and being good defensively.

  38. Alex April 9th, 2009 at 12:13 am

The 1998 Yankees lost their first 3 and 4 of their first 5. We’re just about at championship pace.

  40. CaptainsCorner April 9th, 2009 at 12:14 am

Matsui might get the game off tomorrow. Since it is a day game after a night and he is old. I can see Swish in LF and Damon DH. I love that Swish gives them a very good chance to get a runner on base with a walk since he is always at 3-2. If Nady doesn’t hit he will never get on base because he doesn’t walk.

  41. lil' m April 9th, 2009 at 12:14 am

Pete you are a genius!! Laughed my head off. Somehow I think the Yankees still have a bit of a chance to turn things around. And in addition to what GB7 said about top-tier starters (including the reigning AL and NL Cy Young award winners) being knocked around to start the season, the defending world champs just staved off a sweep by Atlanta this afternoon in a late-inning rally to win 12-11. Not exactly a pitcher’s duel. So maybe it’s not quite time to hit the big red button . . . just a thought . . .

  42. MoPitch Cutter April 9th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Just got back from the game. Was taunted by a fan and I reminded him that Camden Yards is only full b/c of the Yankee faithful. I asked what happens when we leave?

Great posts from all. I think it would’ve been bittersweet if Tex’s first hit was a homer. O’s fans really hate him and show it. They’re really going to hate him/us once the team gets going.

Folks, you KNOW it’s early season when the AL East looks this: 1) B’more, 2)Toronto, 3) Boston, 4) TB, 5) NYY. Ridiculous…

  43. dennis-costanza(sox fan) April 9th, 2009 at 12:19 am

Lose two in a row…and come back with AJ, AP, and Joba.

    That is a great rotation.

    -dennis

  44. jepper April 9th, 2009 at 12:19 am

And for the record, the last team to start 0-3 and win it all? The 1998 Yankees. I’m pretty sure you all remember them.

  45. Al from BK April 9th, 2009 at 12:19 am

It really says something about the starters so far when the team hasn’t led for a single inning so far.

  46. CB April 9th, 2009 at 12:21 am

Another unfortunate game but it’s just not a big deal in any way.

Here’s the thing – this team has the best starting pitching staff in baseball and it’s not particularly close.

The reason why they lost these last two games is squarely on the starting pitchers. The team fought back in both games to score runs and mount a come back.

And in that sense this team is NOT like last years. Last years offense would not have clawed back like they did the past two games. Could the offense have been better? Sure. But if someone told you the offense would score this many runs the past two games with CC and Wang going to the mound you’d have to have like your chances to go 2-0.

It happens. Tonight Wang just could not command his two seam fastball. Wang is a bit like AJ Burnett in that if he loses his plan A he doesn’t have enough of a plan B to fall back on (if AJ can’t locate his curve ball he’s doesn’t do a whole lot…). That’s what gets him. If he can’t keep the sinker low in the zone he’s done.

What’s strange is that Wang threw several very good change ups tonight. Terrific changes. That’s the pitch he desperately needs. Not the slider. It’s the change up. The combination of a heavy two seam power slider and change up is simply devastating. Both pitches have the same action but come in completely different velocities.

There’s simply no way the staff is going to be a problem unless they get hurt. Tonight was Wang’s first game in the regular season in months and the rust showed. No big deal – he’ll get better with innings.

Let’s hope AJ isn’t too pumped up and/or nervous pitching in front of his home town area tomorrow. If he can’t command his curve ball it’s may be a sweep.

That’s the pitch Wang needs to develop (much like AJ)

    ————————————————————

Exactly what I’m talking about. I have missed a few, I’m sure. Look at some of the top hitters. Brandon Inge with 3 homers. Felipe Lopez and Tony Clark each switch hitting home runs in the same game. 10 years ago, Tuffy Rhoades hit 3 homers in the first game of the year. He hit 4 more all year and was playing in Japan the next year. Odd things happen in the first couple of weeks. A few years ago, a team won their first 13 games of the year and finished last.f

If healthy that rotation over a period of time will dominate.

AJ Burnett at #3 is ridiculous. He has top 3 stuff in the AL. Over a long season this rotation will bear fruit. The panic is absurd. I was in Boston for opening day and we watched the Yanks-O’s game due to our rain out. There is so much to like about this Yankee team. SP-lineup-BP.

i understand that all the panic jokes are directed at people who think the season is over and things like that. but i for most of us (and definitley for me) it’s more about one, the team having a history of these “it’s just two games” starts turning into 40 games and they are 19-21, and two, the fact that this team is playing similarly to 2008. it’s not about it being two games, or four games, or 15 games, and it’s definitely not about panicking. it’s about playing good baseball from the start for a change, and not having to dig ourselves out of a hole again. the games in april count just as much as the game in september. any loss like these last two is bothersome, no matter when it comes.

  58. miggs April 9th, 2009 at 12:32 am

With the day game tomorrow I bet you see Molina behind the plate and Swisher in the starting lineup instead of either Nady or Matsui (Nady rides the pine if I have any say).

I also wouldn’t be shocked to see Melky in CF but its only been 2 games, maybe Gardner gets the start.

I think it just melded together into some sort of cheer-boo, or “choo” that sounded like boos anyway.

And Uehara was absolutely horrible tonight imo. He couldnt find the strike zone all night and we weren’t taking advantage of the stuff he was leaving right over the plate. Patience is good, but too much patience at the plate can cause some real problems.

  83. Peri April 9th, 2009 at 1:10 am

no rational player is going to say “its just 40 games”. wang and cc couldn’t locate. can’t win like that. if you think they’re not going to locate for the next 160 games, then God bless ya.

  84. GreenBeret7 April 9th, 2009 at 1:12 am

Ouch. angels take a 4-0 lead into the 8th inning and the bullpen blows a great start by adenhart. 6-4 Oakland into the bottom of the 9th.

I don’t know if people are really in panic mode. I think that’s being a bit dramatic on your part.. not that you are ever dramatic, of course lol

I think the one thing we thought we had this season, is what is letting us down right now. We lacked good pitching last season and we got CC and AJ and that was supposed to right the ship. Both the games lost on pitching. We were scoring runs, but the pitching just let in too many runs on the wrong side.
It’s two games, but it kinda dulls the excitement that we all had about our upgraded rotation. This just feels like more of the same, right now.
We aren’t robots. We will say things each game. We can’t just be automatons clapping along.

There is incredible pressure to win for the Yankees. From both the fans and G. Steinbrenner. I believe it is all very counter-effective. The must-win pressure they have cannot be fun or inspiring to play under. We should all just let them be. Let their reason to play, their inspiration, be simply their Passion and Love of The Game. We should praise a win and ignore a loss. In this life you manifest what you focus on. Lets not focus on the losses.

  97. SJ44 April 9th, 2009 at 7:08 am

it’s a shame there are so many dumbells in the fan base.

Some of you ought to read the gibberish you wrote last night and ask yourselves do you really believe this stuff or is the blog now your personal psych ward?

Simply amazing how so many in the fan base have turned into Pre-2004 Red Sox fans.

Forget jumping. If some of you can’t get a grip on your emotions, you will just stroke out. Which may not be such a bad thing for some.

Really, get a grip. Some of you are doing nothing but embarrassing yourselves with this nonsense.k

  98. Spartan April 9th, 2009 at 7:12 am

I only hear the media speculating about Yankee fan panic.

Are we going to ignore that the Yankees look horrible the first two games?

I remember last year a lot of sportswriters saying that if the Yankees had not lost these “meaningless” games, they might have made the playoffs.

But what do we know…we are just fans who panic and imagine that real rivalries exist.

Good thing we have the media to straighten us out….. *eye roll*

  99. Rick April 9th, 2009 at 7:29 am

I don’t think we need to panic…..this pitching staff is a good pitching staff…..ransom is playing up to his potential….and once the center of the lineup gets going they will be fine….one thing I do worry about is the defense in the outfield…is it just me or does Nady look awfully slow out there.

  100. Jorge Steinbrenner April 9th, 2009 at 7:32 am

    There’s nothing to worry about.

Each night, the team has shown fight and put five runs on the board. Players we were originally concerned about (Cano, Posada) have shown a lot.

Each night, the loss can be traced back to one thing: elite starting pitchers working out early season problems.

They’re not going to do that all year. In fact, it’s highly inprobable they’ll even do that their very next start.

This is a very, very good baseball team.

  101. Doreen April 9th, 2009 at 7:37 am

    SJ44 -

I think if you’re going to skip the game threads, you should REALLY skip the game threads – don’t even read ‘em over the next day. :)

I can’t seem to help myself – like watching a car wreck – I’m officially addicted to having the blog up while I’m watching. It’s true, there’s really only a handful of decent in-game posts. And what it ends up being for a majority of it is back-and-forth posts that have more to do with the posts themselves than the game.

Still, there are nuggets in there, if you can skim or skip the stuff that irritates and adds nothing.

You can’t blame people for being disappointed in the way CC and CMW pitched. But I had to laugh – first game Gardner did well and he was going to be an All-Star; yesterday he didn’t do as well and Melky should start today. Now, Melky may very well start today, but I doubt it would have anything to do with what Gardner did or didn’t do yesterday at this point in the season.

I’m going to have to wean myself from the in-game posts. Definitely. :)

The Yankees had really played well the last 2 weeks of ST, and while I realize it doesn’t count, they were consistent and I have every reason to believe they’ll get back into that groove. But intuitively I figured that at team that had won 10 in a row and 18 of 20 was due for a little set-back (if you can call two losses a set-back).

  102. SJ44 April 9th, 2009 at 7:44 am

My hope is, some of the younger fans, who are easily prone to panic mode, get a grip, learn a little about the game, and calm down. If that can’t happen, and they turn this blog into mush with their nonsense, hopefully they stroke out and are gone within a week. Either way works for me.

As Jorge said, there is a lot to like about this team. For the morons who kept posting last night this team has “no heart” (as if he would have any idea about that), in both games, they came back from huge deficits and almost won the game.

That’s a sign this team has a very good heartbeat.

Two games, two poor starts. That’s what has hurt them.

For those who think that will happen all year, then you have nothing to worry about. The season is over and you can find something else to do other than pollute this blog with your idiocy for the next 6 months.

For the rest of us, who enjoy this team and really like its chances, we tend to think the starting pitching will get on a roll and work itself out.

It is a very good team. They have 160 more games left to the season to prove otherwise. If they stay healthy, things will be just fine.

  103. SJ44 April 9th, 2009 at 7:54 am

    Doreen,

The in game threads, once the game gets underway, have become unreadable for me. At my age, I have to preserve my remaining functional brain cells. I can’t afford to waste them on such nonsense. lol

Seriously, everything about this team revolves around starting pitching. When its good, and it will be good (probably starting today), the Yankees will be very good. When its not, they will look pretty bad. Mainly because, the offense (especially without Arod) cannot slug its way to victories anymore. IMO, that’s a good thing. They won championships being a pitching first organization and they won squat being a slugging first organization. It was time for a change.

I’m just amazing at the kneejerk, schizo reaction from some in the fan base. When have folks become so jittery? So much of it is funny, you can’t do anything but laugh. Some of it though is sad to me.

Are these folks this dumb to believe the pitching will not get going this year? Do they actually believe established players lose it because they are wearing pinstripes? Folks can’t be that dumb, can they?

How do you enjoy the game if you believe some of the gibberish these folks spew? Did they actually believe this team would go undefeated this year?

All over baseball the first couple of days, very good starting pitchers have gotten rocked. Its just one of those funky things that happens.

A few years back, a journeyman named Tuffy Rhodes once hit 3 HR’s on Opening Day for the Cubs. A month later, he was back in the minors and out of MLB within a year, before becoming a folkhero in Japanese baseball.

Crazy stuff happens early but, in the end, the cream rises to the top. I suspect it will be the same thing with this team once it gets rolling.

  104. John in Ohio April 9th, 2009 at 7:59 am

Bad command two days in a row…not the end of the world. I’m thinking that today will be much different. 58 degrees and sunny at game time, and A.J. Burnett throwing aspirins. The starter strikout drought ends in inning number one today.

Make no mistake, though…Baltimore can hit.

I’d like to see Swish get a start today.

  105. Doreen April 9th, 2009 at 8:03 am

    SJ44 -

I hear ya about the remaining brain cells! Have to protect those at ALL costs. :)

It’s a long season. If you freak out in the first week of April, you’ve got nowhere to go. I hated having to hear Johnny Damon say, last night, we’ve got 160 games to play in the same tone of voice one would hear at the latter part of the season, 8 games out with 10 to go.

Oh, well. Here’s to pacing oneself and pragmatic optimism. :)

  106. Benny ( it's Game time) Blanco April 9th, 2009 at 8:27 am

    GO get’em AJ. I have u pegged for 9k’s.

  107. Hokiehill April 9th, 2009 at 8:40 am

Not going to read to much into loss number 2 as everyone has already said it’s way early. I’m also not particularly concerned about losing them to Baltimore either. While they have an under-rated lineup I still don’t expect them to finish higher than 4th in the east, but that said, every season there are terrible teams that for some reason give the Yankees fits…it’s been the Royals in the past and Baltimore as well…I still expect we’ll get a win today and play our absolute A game against Tampa and the Sox all season long. The pitching will be great through out the season as expected, and once the pitchers hit their stride, 5 runs a game will be enough to win A LOT…

  108. Hokiehill April 9th, 2009 at 8:42 am

I will NOT be predicting AJ’s performance for tonight as my previous 2 have not done so well….this plus recently getting a new Yankees hat are probably the top 2 things contributing to starting 0-2. To the rest of you that have changed anything about your Yankees viewing habits, please unchange those things immediately

  113. Paulie April 9th, 2009 at 9:52 am

If we cant beat Baltimore than how can we expect to beat the Sox or Rays? How can a team look so prepared in spring trainong and look so lost now. And Tex–get used to the booing. Baltimore is the minor leagues compared to Boston. We have our first 6 games against second division teams and we cant get off to a good start–sigh

  114. We Miss Paulie April 9th, 2009 at 9:53 am

    Two things to consider:

    1. The Yankees always have trouble with Baltimore. Not sure why, but look at last year’s record of 11-7 wasn’t a total domination.

    2. In years past, after our 1-2 starters had bad games, we had a series of no names pitching next. Look who we have up tonight. Then Andy and Joba…..

    Calm down!!!!

  115. Chicago Yankee April 9th, 2009 at 11:28 am

If my memory serves me correctly, the 1998 Yankees started the season 0-4 and then Paulie called a players only meeting, and well, we all know what happened next.

  116. Joba the Great April 9th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Michael Kay just attributed this 0-2 Phillies fact to Mark Feinsand of the Daily News on the telecast, just further driving home the point that Kay is a weasel. When you want accuracy, look no further than Michael Kay.
