The pleasures of life on the road

Time to get all Peter King on you here. I went to the worst Subway ever in Baltimore for lunch. Ever.

Walk in the door and there are 15 people in line. So I wait and when I get up to the counter, I place my order.

“Six-inch turkey on wheat with swiss.”

“No wheat,” the guy tells me.

“OK, how about Italian?”

“OK. No turkey.”

“Ham?”

“No ham.”

“What do you have?”

Turns out they had meatball, chicken breast, tuna salad, salami, American cheese and some sort of weird other cheese. That was it. This was at 12:45 p.m.

So chicken breast on Italian it was. They had Diet Coke at least. Looks like I’ll have to find somewhere else tomorrow.

Steve Lombardi of Was Watching.com did an interview with me and asked some good questions.

NBC Sports on MSNBC.com had an interview with me as well.

This final bit of shameless self-promotion: I’ll be doing an interview with SNY’s The Wheelhouse this afternoon.

This from YES:

The YES Network, the most-watched regional sports network in the country for the past six years, and Verizon, the only major provider that delivers all-digital TV service over an advanced all-fiber network straight to customers’ homes, have reached a multiyear video-on-demand agreement.

The agreement will provide Verizon’s FiOS TV digital subscribers throughout New York state and in north and central New Jersey access for the first time to telecasts of New York Yankees games and other YES programming on demand.

The YES on-demand programming will be available beginning Wednesday (April 8). This makes Verizon the first distributor to offer Yankees games on demand.

I say boycott. I’ve boycotted KFC for their not having chicken (I told them they should take the “C” off the sign then) and Dunkin’ Donuts for not having donuts. Never going back to either.

  2. tampayank April 8th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

I wonder if Verizon Fios will expand this to other parts of the country, that would be great.
The worst Subway I have ever had was in the Bahamas, bread tasted 3 months old and nothing seemed fresh but otherwise a good time there.

  3. Donnie April 8th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

“Subway: Eat Fresh”? More like, “Subway: Eat Whatever We Have Lying Around”.

  4. tampayank April 8th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

The worst Subway I’ve ever had was in the Bahamas. The bread tasted 3 months old and the meat didn’t taste fresh. The rum was good though

  5. PaulydaGoat April 8th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

U boycotted those places cause they ran out of food one time??

    U got problems.

  6. KennyH123 April 8th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Uh, posters: You realize that Subway is a franchise business?

A particular Subway shop is only as good as the owner running it. To condemn all Subways is ridiculous.

  7. Your TX Connection April 8th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

    Pete,
I don’t know where you stay when there in Baltimore, but it would seem a nice walk to Inner Harbor would yield a bunch more places to grab a bite!

  8. Baseball Mogul April 8th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

They’re supposed to supply a service. Food & fast. They did neither. It’s not like you can make another choice there. It’s pretty simple. Don’t really like either place anyway.

  9. Jack Knight April 8th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

There goes your potential Subway sponsorship.

  10. Bill G April 8th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Well its not as bad at the Tremont Plaza Hotel in Baltimore where i stayed… not a classy joint but nothing bad. The little sub/bagel shop in the hotel was rediculous! I got a turkey sub, a bagel and a 6 pack of bud light for the room… came to around 25 bucks… crazy prices. That was a little off topic I suppose but I figured I would share

  11. Erica April 8th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

I am not sure it qualifies as real chicken, but I love Subway chicken. Its really good with mayo.

  12. vin April 8th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

No wonder Jared lost all that weight… they never had anything to eat.

  13. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

For anyone who has been to Camden Yards… how is it over there?

I plan on taking a vacation this coming June/July to Washington DC. I would like the see games of the Nationals and Orioles. My friend said Baltimore is a pretty bad area, what do you think?

  14. Bronx Jeers April 8th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

You shouldn’t even be in a Subway Pete.

  15. Vader April 8th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Pete, do you get a daily food allowance on the road or does it come out of your pocket?

  16. Betsy April 8th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Francesca, lol. He’s talking about Tex being booed and plays a clip of Mark basically saying that he expected to be booed, “we’re the Yankees”. Francesca then unbelievably says that it’s just a little too early for Tex to be saying “we’re the Yankees” and that he should at least wait a few games. He actually said this bothers him a little. How would he like the new guys to refer to the team – “those guys plus us?” Once a player signs with a team, in case Mike wasn’t aware, that player becomes a member of the team. That is, unless he has to walk through fire to prove he’s a “true Yankee”.

  17. Phil April 8th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

I emailed this to Pete, but thought I’d post it here incase anyone wanted the info:

Hey Pete, love the blog! I live in Baltimore, so I thought I could be of some help for you to get a decent lunch tomorrow. I don’t know if you have enough time, but there’s a GREAT breakfast/lunch place if you want to take a little walk into the harbor. It’s called Miss Shirley’s. Here’s their website: http://www.missshirleys.com/. If you can’t get there this trip, I’d definitely recommend going on your next off day in Baltimore. If you’re looking for something quick besides Subway, walk up Eutaw Street about 2-3 blocks from the stadium and make a left on Redwood St. You’ll see a little place with a green awning called Kirbies. Great Sandwiches. Nothing fancy, just good. There’s also California Tortilla, right next to the Subway on Pratt… decent burritos. Hope this helps!

  18. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Subway: “Welcome to Subway. We don’t have Turkey, Ham, or Wheat Bread.”

    Customer: “GTFO”

Subway: “If you’d like we can slice the turkey breast thin for you”

Customer: “I’d like to speak to your manager”

    Out steps Carl Pavano.

  19. Uncle Ellsworth April 8th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Yea Baltimore is kinda a weird place.
Inner harbor does not have places to get a quick bite its all sit down tourist driven places- no delis pizzarias etc.

  20. Vader April 8th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Russ one of the best places I’ve seen a ballgame at, well worth the trip.

  21. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint April 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

You should have looked around for a Quiznos

  22. Hokiehill April 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Russ…I go to see the Yankees in Baltimore every year but stay in Annapolis (we have a bay house there) so I can’t really qualify the hotels in Baltimore, but the Inner Harbor has a lot of fun stuff to do and I’ve never had any problem as far as it being a bad area. Camden Yards is also a fantastic place to see a game and one of the best IMO. Be sure to see the Babe Ruth Birthplace museum which is a couple blocks from the park as well.

  23. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

“Russ one of the best places I’ve seen a ballgame at, well worth the trip.”

Nice Vader… what about the surrounding area?

  24. Donnie April 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Russ, Baltimore, the city, is a cesspool. I have lived in Maryland for a good part of my life, and absolutely DREAD going in to that city. That said, there are entry points to the city which will put you RIGHT BY the stadium, where the area isn’t TOO too bad. But venture past the stadium, and you’re taking your enjoyment of your day (and potentially your life) in your own hands.

  25. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Thanks Hokie… I know now not to listen to my friend who said he was scared for his life when he went to Baltimore haha

  26. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Nevermind… Donnie backs up what my friend said haha. I’d be staying in a hotel in Washington so not to worried about anything but getting in and out for the game.

  27. Bob(The Original) April 8th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Got to go to Little Italy in Baltimore. The Inner Harbor places are garbage.

  28. Vader April 8th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

jw…who came up with this True Yankee thing…was it Mike and the Mad Dog????

  29. Joekuh April 8th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Russ, u mean out LIMPS Carl Pavano. He slipped on an olive.

  30. William Buckner April 8th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

“I plan on taking a vacation this coming June/July to Washington DC. I would like the see games of the Nationals and Orioles. My friend said Baltimore is a pretty bad area, what do you think?”

It’s been really tough there since the Mayor was elected governor, the police chief resigned, and local drug lord Marlow Stansfield’s crew was taken out.

  31. jake April 8th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

“Enough on Joba and his DUI?”

Enough, too, Peter, on your culinary adventures. “Worst Subway?” That’s like saying “Stinkiest DogPoop.” What’s the point?
You’re killing yourself with the Diet Coke and it’s disturbing to keep hearing about that.
That aspartame is going to kill you.

On the other hand, i love what you’ve to say about the yankees.

  32. Bob(The Original) April 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Oh, and I’ll agree that Baltimore is a nasty city. I live in DC and go up there frequently. The area right around the ballpark is decent/safe but other than that it’s a dump.

  33. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother April 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

    No big deal Pete.
When you get to the local pubs and they don’t have Heinekens, Buds, or Rolling Rocks then you have a real b*tch.

  34. Vito b April 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

well Bill G, you probably should have walked outside of the hotel and purchased the same things at 50 percent of the cost.

  35. Donnie April 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Hokie mentioned some good places, though, Russ. The Inner Harbor is nice, too. Actually, with Baltimore, there ARE a handful of nice places to go, it’s just that to get to them you have to go through the surrounding area, which is often not very fun to do. It shouldn’t dissuade you from making the trip, as Camden Yards IS one of the best places in baseball to catch a game. Just make sure you plan you research your travel route first. I HATE driving in DC, and I would take driving in DC over driving in Baltimore any day of the week.

  36. GreenBeret7 April 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Go figure, huh? A fast food shop in the middle of a large city and offices everywhere, you go in and there’s a line, they run short on prepared foods during a rush hour lunch period. That’s never happened before. Better check and make sure that Rodtiguez didn’t call in and have them tell you that just to annoy you.

  37. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Joekuh… he couldn’t have. They were out of olives :)

  38. Hokiehill April 8th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Baltimore is no different than any city. There are areas that are fine and areas that are terrible. I’ve only been there for the Inner Harbor and baseball games, so my experiences have been limited to those two places and walking in between. Personally I’ve never had a problem but I understand there are certain areas in the city where I would not want to be, just like The Bronx or my hometown of Richmond, VA…fortunately those areas are not where you will be seeing the game.

  39. Rishi April 8th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

that YES news is excellent!! I watch most TV shows on demand, too

  40. RussW210 April 8th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

OK Donnie, I’ll be sure to do some research. I planned on driving from home (Nassau County, Long Island) to DC then using public transportation everywhere. Little Italy sounds nice.

  41. Al from BK April 8th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

“They had Diet Coke at least. Looks like I’ll have to find somewhere else tomorrow.”

Pete you gotta quit taking beverage tips from Mike Francessa ;)

  42. Hokiehill April 8th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

i wish there was a way for me to pay a little extra and get YES down here in VA. I can’t justify the baseball package as I would only watch the Yankees…and my wife complains enough already about the games I do get to see on MASN/ESPN/FOX

  43. Uncle Ellsworth April 8th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

    Russ
    Little Italy is cool
Fell’s Pont is nice go to Bertha’s or Jimmy’s
Do Not go to Federal Hill unless you are in your 20s and want to Party down – it stinks
I like Baltimore but DO NOT venture off the beaten path I have been apprehensive in some areas.

  44. pat April 8th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Suddenly the Subway in the gas station in FL isn’t looking so bad.

  45. Count of Montefusco April 8th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

“The agreement will provide Verizon’s FiOS TV digital subscribers throughout New York state and in north and central New Jersey access for the first time to telecasts of New York Yankees games and other YES programming on demand.”

“YES Programming via Verizon FiOS will include all the features available through other outlets, including our newly developed NETVision, through which up to 40% of camera angles feature a border-to-border protective netting.”

  46. Hokiehill April 8th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Count, the Yankees have addressed this…they made sure the netting covered most camera angles so that viewers at home would feel just as safe as the folks actually sitting in the stands…I can’t tell you how many times a foul ball has caused me to jump behind the couch…no more thanks to the Yankees thoughtfully considering my physical and emotional well-being

  47. Ed H. April 8th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

I went to grad school in Baltimore close to the stadium and my favorite place for lunch was Lexington Market. It’s an old style, large walk-around market with stalls selling every type of food, fresh and delicious. It’s pretty inexpensive and you’re guaranteed to find something you like. It’ll be a short cab ride from the stadium.

  48. yanksfanmc76 April 8th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Inner Harbor is great. My friends and I hit it up every summer.

The “Block” is an absolute must-see. We never miss stopping off @ the Harem Club.

  49. frankiedue April 8th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

I’ve always preferred the old corner deli shop over subway grade d meat.

  50. DT April 8th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Why didn’t you just name drop on this Subway dude?

According to WasWatching you are the the “Grand Poobah of the Loyal Order of Yankees Beat Writer Bloggers” and “Duke of Yankees Bloggers” (not sure if that was a typo – Grand Pooh Bear?)

I bet that would have gotten you free Diet Coke refills. ;-)

  51. Donnie April 8th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

DT, it wasn’t a typo. The Grand Poobah was the leader of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo on the Flintstones. He held the highest rank in the brotherhood.

The Grand Pooh Bear would just be really good at getting stuck in trees and hoarding enough honey to feed a third world country.

  52. Doreen April 8th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

If only we had FiOs in our area of central NJ. :( They tell me they’re “working on it,” but I suspect Comcast is putting up a fight.

  53. Doreen April 8th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

We’ve gone to see the Yankees play the Orioles in Baltimore. The first time we stayed at a place outside the city and drove into the game and parked in a public lot at the Inner Harbor and walked around the immediate area.

The second time we splurged and stayed at a place right in the Inner Harbor, but we approached the city wrong and drove right through town – I could see how you wouldn’t want to do that at night, perhaps.

Anyway, as long as you don’t venture outside of the Camden Yards/Inner Harbor area, it’s a really nice place to visit. We’ll do it again, probably next season because this season’s dates don’t mesh.

  54. Clay Buchholz Loves Laptops - Latest Blog Entry: My Interview With Bill Gallo April 8th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Pete, I enjoyed your interview with Steve Lombardi.

    Speaking of interviews…..

    http://claybuchholzloveslaptop.....lo_31.html

  55. saucY April 8th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

i hate subway. talk about lowering the bar…

  56. saucY April 8th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

i should start a real Loyal Order of Water Buffalo. or maybe a Racoon Lodge…

  57. Whitey Fraud April 8th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Subway should be your fifth or sixth choice — on a bad day.

Come on Peter, get with it! Load Urban Spoon or Yelp onto your iPhone, dog!

  58. nj23nut April 8th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

I can’t wait until FIOS makes it way to upstate NY (Saratoga area) because I absolutely DESPISE Time Warner and FIOS would give them some needed competition. I feel like my cable bill is going up every month and there are all kinds of unexplained “fees.”

I would love to get to Camden Yards to see a game one day. I will be sure to avoid the Subway shop though.

  59. Kevin April 8th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

I’m a displaced Yankee fan in Boston, and I just discovered that Fios has added YES HD to my channel lineup. If they’re adding it in Boston, it has to be a national thing. Joyous day. They black out the games, though, so I still have to buy the package. Nothing on on demand, at least not yet.

  60. Aaron April 8th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Pete, was that Subway the one on Pratt Street right near the stadium? I might, MIGHT have had one good experience there. Whoever gave you Miss Shirley’s is right.

Russ, unlike the other haters (well at least all but one of them), I live in Baltimore and it’s fine. Great, no. But totally fine. Yes, if you wander 600 blocks west to Edmonson Avenue, it’s a little sketchy. But the city has really cleaned up its act, and the central part of the city and almost anywhere you can wander to from the stadium is legit.

Definitely check out the restaurants in Little Italy, tell a cabbie High St. and Eastern Ave. Fells Point is a good place for out of towners to check out, Thames St. and S. Broadway.

  61. ChrisinCT April 8th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Pete, I once went into a Subway in Maine and they didn’t have bread! I said to them, “why in the world are you still open then?!?!?!”

  62. bimipsythitty December 23rd, 2009 at 12:47 am

Well I was browsing the internet today and I totally freaked out. I really initiate my ex-girlfriend pictures on the internet. I have no thought when she did this but my ex-girlfriend was making at liberty with some other teen.
Does anyone be struck by any info on this ex-girlfriend site?

  63. the Hedgehog vs. the Fox January 24th, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Wow! Thank you! I always wanted to write on my site something like that. Can I use part of your post in my blog too?
