    Anyone see Boras crying today?

I think he was crying over losing future fees.

He wasn’t crying – he was SOBBING. Really, how low can you get? This is the most cynical thing I’ve ever read. You make me sick.

I was so pumped up watching AJ today… he is probably going to be my favorite starter to watch. That nasty stuff combined with the emotion he shows and that smooth, effortless, delivery.

    Fun guy to watch

  10. Tom in NJ April 9th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Boras has known Nick Adenhart since Nick was in high school. To say that Boras was being phony today dumb.

  11. Drive 4-5 April 9th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

My prayers go out this Easter holiday to the Adenhart family and those around them, including Scott Boras.

    Amen to that, Drive.

  14. Giuseppe Franco April 9th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Mark Melancon now in for Scranton. Scranton leads, 10-3 in the 7th.

  15. pat April 9th, 2009 at 9:40 pm

You may not like Boras’ business practices but tragedy is not the time for petty.

  16. Al from BK April 9th, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Melancon should have made the team Albaladejo is just a mop-up guy.

  17. gayle April 9th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Anyone just see the hit to the head that SF Pitcher just took off of Mike Cameron ball ouch

  18. Laura - Plug it in, change the world! April 9th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

“Melancon should have made the team Albaladejo is just a mop-up guy.”

Not to worry. The minute one of the bullpen guys falters, Melancon will get the call.

  19. Drive 4-5 April 9th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

    RDG,

AJ pitched ok today, but I’m predicting that he will be the ace of this staff before the season’s over. I’m a big fan of CC and Wang, but Burnett’s stuff is so good that it’s surprising when he gets hit. His years in Toronto with Halliday are going to be a big benefit to the Yankees.

His best pitch today was the curveball he threw to strike out Huff with the bases loaded. If he can consistently command his breaking ball, there isn’t a better pitcher in the American League.

  20. Bo knows April 9th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Albaladejo just a mop guy? (shakes head) Seen much baseball?

  21. Giuseppe Franco April 9th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Not to worry. The minute one of the bullpen guys falters, Melancon will get the call.

    ———-

No, it will be either Jackson or Robertson because they are both on the 40-man roster – Melancon isn’t.

That’s one reason why I was surprised the Yanks added Pena to the club. He’s going to take up a roster spot that they need for someone like Melancon later in the season.

BTW, he just retired the side in order with two strikeouts.

    1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K — 15 pitches, 12 strikes.

  22. Al from BK April 9th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

“Albaladejo just a mop guy? (shakes head) Seen much baseball?”

Ya and I’ve seen a guy with mediocre stuff. Melancon is the future closer of this team a guy with filthy stuff and he should get a shot at the show.

  23. Drive 4-5 April 9th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

“That’s one reason why I was surprised the Yanks added Pena to the club. He’s going to take up a roster spot that they need for someone like Melancon later in the season.”

Great point, especially since he’ll probably be a goner when A Rod comes back. But I do love Pena’s glove.

  24. Betsy April 9th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

I’m about to watch the replay of the game now as I was at work……..I love the emotion that AJ showed by striking out Huff (and throwing a curve on 3-2 takes chutzpah) – think the Yanks don’t love having that on their side? It sounds like he was being squeezed quite a bit. I know AJ was disappointed in only going 5 1/3, but he did stop the bleeding and did exactly what the Yankees needed him to do. I surely understand the skepticism that people have for this guy, but I think he’s going to have a huge year. It’s very encouraging that he could bend and not break when things didn’t go his way. He’s quoted in Feinsand’s blog as saying that when he was younger (a) he would have tried to blow Huff away with high heat and (b) he would likely not have made it through this game.

  25. Tom in NJ April 9th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Anybody have an update on Brackman?

  26. Bo knows April 9th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

This is why I’m a fan of Joe G handling of the BP. Nobody gets banished. You have a weak outing, you’re back out there the next day. He realized that he left Coke in too long, so today he only used him for two batters. Smart guy that Joe. True, I did throw things at the screen ie Joe Torre.

  27. Carl April 9th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Last time I seen Melancon he got rocked by the Pirates.

  28. Tom in NJ April 9th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Couldn’t the Yankees just drop Ransom?

  29. Betsy April 9th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Alby has done a fine job with the Yanks in his short stint so far – I like him a lot. He’s not great, but he’s a very solid pitcher and I’ll take one of those every day of the week.

Albaladejo was the best arm out of the BP the last three games. Just goes about his business. Comes in, throws strikes, gets outs. That’s stuff.

Stuff, Farnesworth has stuff, how’s he making out?

  32. gayle April 9th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

He (Pena) is not taking up a roster spot. Meloncan was already on the 40 man roster the only spot that Pena took up wih Dan Giese. It is very simple when Arod comes back he will be sent down and Ranson will become the utility guy it doesnt effect Melancon in any way shape or form

  33. vtred April 9th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Coke looked great today… relieved AJ and struck out both guys.

Don’t overuse him and he can be a weapon.

  34. Betsy April 9th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Bo Knows, the best thing Girardi did re: the pen last year was not make anyone feel that he was going to the doghouse based on one or two bad games. He gave these guys a chance to succeed – you do that often enough and they will. No one is perfect and thinking you have to pitch that way in order to be considered a “go-to” guy is hardly the recipe for success. It’s a recipe for disaster, actually.

  35. Al from BK April 9th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

“Albaladejo was the best arm out of the BP the last three games. Just goes about his business. Comes in, throws strikes, gets outs. That’s stuff.

I dunno I just think Girardi is wasting spots on gimmick pen guys like Edwar(who has only 1 pitch) and others Melancon should get a shot as soon as one of these guys falters because he has tremendous potential.

  36. Joe April 9th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

If Albaladejo gets sent down, it would be for a real long man (Aceves), not Melancon.

  37. Bo knows April 9th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Yep, the list starts with Vizcaino, Gordon, etc, etc, Joe Torre bullpen management. Bruney, Bones, etc as the victims.

  38. Giuseppe Franco April 9th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Anybody have an update on Brackman?

    ———-

    Not a great debut.

    5.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

That Charleston rotation is going to be fun to watch.

Brackman, Manny Banuelos, DJ Mitchell, and Brett Marshall are all big power arms that are capable of throwing in the mid-90s.

There will be lots of Ks and a lot of bad nights for Low-A hitters in that league.

  39. Bo knows April 9th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

You let Melancon develop, he’s one season out of TJ surgery. He rocketed through the system, give him a breather. Don’t throw him in the deep end. These people aren’t robots. Again, give him a chance to succeed and then bring him up.

  40. Tom in NJ April 9th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Giuseppe Franco, Thanks for the update. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out on the River Dogs. I only get to see them once a year when they come play the Blue Claws in Lakewood, NJ.

Oh, and how long before some dim bulb declares Brackman a bust after seeing that line?

  41. Giuseppe Franco April 9th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

Melancon retired all six hitters he faced.

    2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — 26 pitches, 19 strikes.

  42. Bo knows April 9th, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Sure, Girardi is making three mil a year managing the top team in baseball after a successful catching career handling pitchers. I’m sure he’ll appreciate your input.

  47. Joe April 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

It’s not like AJ has ever been known to be economical… I think it was CB who posted the stat that he averaged the most pitches per inning last year next to Lincecum.

Girardi has to let AJ throw 110-120 pitches, otherwise you’re only going to get 6 inning starts. You look at his game log from last year and he had no problem throwing a lot of pitches. It was his first start though, no need to push it, but you have to let him go 110-120 to get 7+ out of him on most nights.

  48. Mark in Tampa April 9th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

    ===========================================

My father’s the finest person I’ve ever known. He was an attorney, and at age 85, with a terminal illness, he insisted on driving 45 minutes to a Newark court room to represent a client whom he knew was never going to pay him. Often, you hang around for 2 hours waiting for the judge to show up. He put complete strangers first.

I also know other lawyers who have great integrity; what a dumb generalization.

  52. Tom in NJ April 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

  53. Laura - Plug it in, change the world! April 9th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

The debate about whether Boras’ tears were real or not is ludicrous. What does Boras gain by faking tears? Boras is a man driven by the need to get the most money for his clients during contract negotiations. Crying over this young man doesn’t get him any brownie points in the negotiations. He was crying real tears because he knew the kid and was extremely sad that he was gone. End of discussion.

    ****************************************

Very true. Quite a few of them who post in the comments section of this blog.

I stayed up to watch Nick pitch last night. I was really just checking the game out to see how Abreu and Giambi did.. but for a 22 year old he showed good composure on the mound – didn’t let jams bother him and worked around them. I felt really bad for him when he lost his chance to get the win.

It was surreal to find out he was dead this morning. Too young, and way too senseless. :(

  58. m April 9th, 2009 at 10:49 pm

There’s always some nitwit who has to take the lowest common denominator path.

Nice to see the Yankees pull out a win and avert the crisis their season had become.

I gotta say, its always easier to find the positive in a win, but I’ve really been impressed with Cano. His approach at the plate and to his AB’s looks terrific, so far.

  60. KWAN April 9th, 2009 at 10:51 pm

    A few issues:

Lohud should read the MLB CBA and look at Cots–some of those salaries don’t seem correct to me (ARod at $33 million this year?).

    Nick Adenhart–WTF? Unbeleivable.

Burnett is just plain nasty. And he’s now our nasty.

Again, with this rotation, this team is unlikely to go on prolonged losing streaks.

Hmmm. Last time Yanks were 0-2 or 0-3 was 1998? Look how that turned out…

Jen, nah – I love Tex, but for some reason AJ’s bad boy persona (actually bad boy gone good?)really intrigues me (and I’m usually not that type). He’s got tattoos all over his body practically and used to have nipple rings -not a poster boy for conventionality. Definitely has beautiful eyes – and he’s got that squinty glare thing going on on the mound. Cute story on the pre-game show from Kim Jones. AJ has two sons, both of whom play baseball……one for the Sox and one for the Jays. He was driving recently and wearing Yankee cap while the boys had their Sox and Jays caps on. AJ joked that he hoped no one on the Yankees would see this…..or something like that.

  70. Betsy April 9th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

I have a father who’s a lawyer and he hates lawyer jokes because he takes his profession seriously. Once there was a story in the newspaper about two lawyers who hung a shark sign outside their office door, sort of as a joke considering that lawyers are considered sharks by many. My father did NOT like that…….I sort of don’t like those jokes either, though I suppose I might laugh at them. There is nothing wrong with the legal profession – there are bad people in all walks of life. Getting on Scott Boras because he’s shedding tears over the loss of a young life? Wow – that’s rough. I’m not his biggest fan, but that has nothing to do with anything. He’s still a human being and should be allowed to grieve without people wondering about his sincerity.

Chad Jennings has some nice post-game notes from Scranton.

Juan Miranda’s work with lefties in batting practice seems to be paying off. This will be terrific if he can solve the puzzle. Platoon players are incomplete players, and hopefully he’ll be able to contribute for the big club one day.

  83. m April 10th, 2009 at 1:47 am

  86. Nick in SF April 10th, 2009 at 1:58 am

Has Swisher even had a bat at-bat?

I’d like to see him start tomorrow. He has extensive AL Central knowledge and he’s probably partied in Aruba more than Nady.

  87. no.27 April 10th, 2009 at 2:21 am

Matsui played on a bad knee last year that needed surgery and had a .795 OPS. Every year of Matsui’s career is better than Nady’s career average.

It’s annoying that people are overrating Nady, but worse that they are underrating Matsui. Even after Nady’s career year last season, EVERY YEAR IN MATSUI’S CAREER IS HIGHER THAN NADY’S CAREER AVERAGE.

EVERY YEAR IN MATSUI’S CAREER IS HIGHER THAN NADY’S CAREER AVERAGE. That includes last year, when Matsui was playing on a bad knee.

I don’t care who is pitching. Matsui is a better option than Nady.

If you would rather have Nady in the lineup than Matsui you are dead wrong.

  88. trade nady April 10th, 2009 at 2:25 am

cashman will have to trade one of nady and swisher… eventually.

  89. hokiehill April 10th, 2009 at 10:19 am

Swish has hit extremely well the past 2 games, but Nady hasn’t been bad either. Seeing as both have had success in the current configurations, why change anything?
