Going to Thursday’s home opener at the new Yankee Stadium? If you’re from Westchester, Rockland or Putnam counties, Kevin Devaney of The Journal News would like to hear from you.

He’s writing an article on what fans are anxious to see, do, eat, and buy at the new stadium. E-mailhim at kdevaney@lohud.com if you’re interested in sharing.

As to the Alex situation, 1 weeks worth of games is just not enough. The Yankees should not even think of rushing him. Add a week or two to what Alex needs and then bring him up. We don’t even know how his body is going to react to doing the normal things that ballplayers do…….I’m glad things are going well for him, but one step at a time.

    From a prior thread:

Tex just seems too good to be true – I think one of his former teammates said that he’s the boy you would like your daughter to marry. I absolutely think he’ll be the next face of the franchise and obviously not just because of his personality off the field. I am so impressed by his defense and the fact that he didn’t take his bad at bats into the field with him. Watching him at first is like watching an artist at work – it’s been years since I felt like that about our 1B, in fact – maybe anyone on the field. I felt for him that people were already starting to psychoanalyze his personality because he had poor at bats while being viciously booed – speculating that the guy can’t handle pressure. I think he’s going to have a monster year.

SJ, I think all of the new guys have fit in incredibly well. Joba was quoted as saying that although the team welcomed them with open arms, the new guys welcomed the team almost as much. O’Neill raised a great point recently as well. CC, Tex, AJ – these guys are here for the long haul, not two year tryouts. As such, they have a vested interest in the team doing well and can become a part of the fabric of the team. CC, AJ, Tex, Swish – they have all embraced the Yankees ethos and, in fact, have done their part to actually change the personality and perception of the team. Jorge was quoted as saying recently that they are having fun – and that’s a change. The quote kind of slipped under the radar, but it’s pretty telling. Swisher making Nady comfortable by providing towels in the dugout (that was hilarious)? AJ (though we haven’t seen it yet) pieing someone on YES (which will happen soon enough)? CC being the pied piper? Tex just being an overall good guy? Yet, you can tell that they all very much want to win (not that other new signings/acquisitions didn’t) and will do what it takes to make it happen. It’s been a real treat to get to know these guys -and, they are terrific players (we didn’t just sign them to be stand up comedians)

I’m sure the great fans from the Capital District would have some worthy quotes to add too.

    Betsy,

They aren’t rushing him. Fact is, if he is ok to play, and its before May 15, he’s playing.

The surgery wasn’t that invasive and Cash has gone on record numerous times as saying he always gives the “downside” re: dates for return from rehab.

He’s feeling great and if there aren’t any setbacks when he starts baseball activities May 1 may be the date he returns.

Coming back May 1st would be grand because that’s the beginning of a brutal homestand:

    Angels (May 1-3)

    Red Sox (May 4-5)

    Rays (May 6-7)

Alex could come back early without over taxing him on the baseball field. He could get days at DH. The Yankees won’t rush him, but if he is ready why would you ever want to hold him back?

  8. Betsy April 11th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

As long as Alex isn’t taking any unnecessary risks in returning that early, that would be fantastic, SJ. Despite what people say, the Yankees players want this guy back – the team isn’t complete without him.

Ouch – that is brutal, GF. On the other hand, if the Yankees are as good as we think they are, then it’s just something to look forward to instead of being nervous about (which I will proceed to be, anyway, lol).

The new stadium is just their temporary home until they do a makeover on the old one.

I feel like Arod’s been stripped of all the “phony” and he has a career and rep to rebuild. He’s playing for a lot this season.

I think the guy had a lot of demons he was trying to hide.

Now he’s allowed to be human. Hopefully, he allows himself to be human for once. It should be interesting.

What I don’t like is I know the media will turn Arod’s return into something akin to the return of Charles Manson to society or Roman Polanski to America.

Arod needs to step up and take the media on head on and not allow the rest of the team to be badgered about Arod.

We’re going to learn quickly if he’s worth the trouble.

I think it’s a pivotal year for him because if his presence is deemed a negative on this team, it could grease the skids into him leaving the Yankees in the not so distant future.

It’s kind of like David Lee Roth returning to Van Halen. They sold records and sold out concert halls without him, but they weren’t the same.

Arod makes this lineup incredible. He’s also a better fielder than Ransom.

Seeing Arod in the 4 hole protecting Tex is going to make this lineup so dangerous.

It may not be vintage Ortiz/Manny, but it’s close. Opposing pitchers are going to hate pitching to NY.

If Cano, Nady or Swisher turn into a solid 5 hitter it only makes things tougher.

Watching Cano and Swisher hit balls to the opposite field brings a tear to my eye after watching what we’ve seen with the pull happy Yankees over the past few years.

I think Matsui is going to see a lot of pine time. He looks like he’s swinging with his arms only. He might be better in the Strawberry/Sierra type role than an everyday player at this point.

  14. Rebecca-Optimist Prime..staying to write the story April 11th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Matsui just doesn’t look comfortable. You can read it in his body language.

  15. Jeter in LF April 11th, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Alex has to start playing before the release of that slimy book in order to burst their exploitive publishing bubble.

  16. Betsy April 11th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

The problem with sitting Matsui now is that he won’t have a chance to come out of it ….he needs to play to have that chance. That said, I want to win games, so if Matsui needs to sit in favor of better/hot, then so be it. You can’t hit on bad knees – I thought people were way too optimistic with Matsui, projecting him to put up near his normal numbers.

Alex just needs to forget about the media – they’re never going to like him, so why try to please them? He should just enjoy the fact that he’s back with his teammates – I’m sure he’s missed being part of the team very much – and do his thing on the field.
