A-Rod better take it easy. He JUST had surgery and, we wouldn’t want to see him surrender the yogurt on his first day back.

Can someone explain to what it means “flips”

  5. jennifer April 13th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I guess someone is tossing it underhand to him.

    soft toss.
someone just kneels to the side and flips balls up to him that he hits into a net

  7. Tom B April 13th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

“flips” are soft toss, someone crouches next to you and tosses the balls at you sideways, at your belt.

Man, it’s nice to see Alex back. I’m sure he’s thrilled to be back as well, hanging out with his teammates and just being part of the team again.

I think that means Arod flipped off the beat writers 42 times. Middle finger dexterity is important.

  15. whozat April 13th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Jeez, what an attention hog. ARod sure is a jerk, grabbing all the attention for himself. There’s no other possible explanation for why there are five blog posts about him already today. It’s always something with ARod!! I’m sick of him already. Why won’t he just go away? ARod overload! They only person to blame is Alex! It seems like I’m always hearing about him, and it must be something that he’s doing to generate that perception!!

  16. Leaping Tom April 13th, 2009 at 1:31 pm

It’s O-V-E-R. Just look at the photo. You can tell he’s a shadow of himself. Plus, we need to move Derek Jeter to the bullpen and call up Austin Jackson to play shortstop and centerfield so we can have two DHs and then trade Melky Cabrera, Cody Ransom, Luis Sojo and Brett Tomko for Manny Ramirez.

  17. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother April 13th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Yes, if Pete meant “backflips” I am sure the Yankees trainers would’ve started him out with a somewhat smaller number, gradually increasing to 42.

  18. rover April 13th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

love ya Cody, but all good things end. Gave it your best I/we appreciate what you’ve been trying to do. Pardon us for being a bit spoiled. Maybe if you got goofier, bought a new mirror or something. Just understand Arod is a tough act to follow. Rest comfortably knowing at the moment no one else we know of could have done it either.

  19. m April 13th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

    People are so easily fooled.

    1. Joshie Boy knew what he was doing. Classic passive-aggressive tactic to goad an emotionally wrought team to react. Too bad it backfired. Payoffs. The gift that keeps on giving. So the Sox can add the Angels to their growing list of teams they have bad-blood with?

    2. Alex paying off Ransom to suck, so that Yankee fans will beg for his return.

  20. randy l. April 13th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

    whozat ?

you’re back! patrick is getting lonesome and he needs back up. he can’t convince anyone that wins don’t matter.

glad you’re over the hughes /kennedy thing. that was rough. it probably was best to lay low for a while.

so now you’re here to defend arod. i will say you like to take on challenges.

  21. Al from BK April 13th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I’d say if hes already taken 80 swings in his first day back, I think hes anxious to get back on the field, no? I had a dream and A-Rod was playing April 30th against the Angels.

  25. DT April 13th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Pete – did you actually count the number of swings, cuts and flips, or is Jason Zillo feeding you this info?

All those numbers are divisible by 6. Odd.

    6 into 78 is 13. Arod’s number!
    6 into 36 is 6, 6 into 42 is 7. 6 + 7 = 13! Arod’s number!

Count the number of jog steps. I could be on to something here.

  29. miggs April 13th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

    A few things on Beckett.

I was out all day yesterday and just caught up with this stuff late last night.

First of all, no way that pitch was accidental. Abreu was stepping out of the box. The ball went directly over his head, and only about 3-4 inches over his head.

Secondly, Beckett’s actions are what emptied the benches. After the pitch the ump was holding back Abreu, everything seemed ready to blow over, and Beckett comes walking in from the mound running his mouth. That ignited the whole thing.

Third, after the benches cleared and nothing happened, everyone strarted heading back to the dugouts and Beckett got in the face of Mike Scoscia, yelling and pointing at him.

Unbelievable. So many words to describe this guy, none of which would make it through the filter. He’s a complete jackass. Between him and Papelbon, those guys exude as little class as humanly possible. Thank god the Yankees don’t have any guys like that on the team.

  30. m April 13th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

    jennifer,

Exactly, if you’re going to get tossed, get tossed for backing up Abreu & Scoscia (I can never spell his name). You would get instant credibility around the majors if you did.

  31. Nick in SF April 13th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

randy, you mistakedly exaggerated Livan’s innings total a few threads back. He went 6.2 innings total, not the “SEVEN shut out innings before giving up two runs in the 8th inning” that you stated. Still a nice debut for Livan.

  35. Mark in Tampa April 13th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Notice how few teams actually tried to start anything like that with the Yanks while Farnsworth was here? There was some running of the mouth, chest-puffing stuff, but nobody wanted to scrap while he was here. Too bad he couldn’t pitch worth anything, but at least he was good for something.

  36. miggs April 13th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

Also, only AFTER Beckett’s second meltdown, this time getting in the face of Scoscia, was there any pushing or shoving.

So first he throws a pitch at Abreu. That doesn’t get the reaction he wants so he comes charging in towards the plate yelling at Abreu.

After the benches clear but nothing happens and guys start calming down, then he has the nerve to get in Scoscia’s grill. Finally, some pushing and shoving. Hunter gets thrown out. Such garbage. Who the hell does this guy think he is?

He should get a minimum 5 game suspension.

    Abreu hasn’t got the grapes.

Hunter does, but Beckett is a little bigger and seems mean, bordering on anti-social. Could be Ryan v. Ventura all over again.

    miggs,

He won’t get anything. This is not the NBA, where they really frown on flagrant stuff and won’t hesitate to bring down the hammer, even on their stars.

How’s the media playing it out? They love the Red Sox, but the Angels are the team they adore.

I really do believe Josh knew that lipping off to the Angels would set them off. Can’t believe that he would do this, days after they lost a teammate.

“glad you’re over the hughes /kennedy thing. that was rough. it probably was best to lay low for a while.”

I will never understand fans like you who would rather be right than have the team do well. You’d have been screaming for John Lester’s head when he was averaging 5 IP or less a start at age 23/24, but now probably tout him as an example of the kind of young pitching the Yankees need to develop. You think there’s some kind of Magical Winning Ability that a guy like Livan Hernandez has, and yet are blind to the fact that he relies HUGELY on the kind of defense that they Yankees do not have in order to get wins.

In short, you’re a willfully ignorant jerk. I didn’t stop coming here to hide from guys like you. I stopped coming here because the commenting section here has been overrun by people like you. I only swung by today because I was bored, and now I’m leaving again.

You should have learned from when Pedro was in Boston. They can start the trouble but are immune from the supensions. But have you noticed that the Yankees get suspened if they start it or retaliate. Course RS fans I try to say that to don’t agree.

Just don’t ask him any questions, and he won’t say anything stupid.

    AD,

In the playoffs against the Phillies. Remember when Saito threw at Victorino’s head? Then one of his guys got plunked? He was yelling and pointing from the dugout. Disgusting. He never lifted a finger for Alex & Jeter. Probably kept his pitchers from retaliating, too. (not that I’m a big advocate of that).

  53. pat April 13th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Remember when he almost drilled Manny in the head last year before he got traded? Not that I approve of that stuff, you could kill someone like that afterall, but at least he made the guy uncomfortable at the plate for a minute. That’s more than any other Yankee pitcher was able to do while he was w/ Boston.

    - Yes, wasn’t Victorino pointing to his rib cage afterward, as to say “hit me here, not in the head”. Got it, I thought maybe Joe got a little fired up this season.

Becket is a Jackass, him Paplebum, Youk and Pedroia all need a beat down this year.

To be honest, I liked Hughes and Kennedy to begin the year last year, too.

But again to be honest, it would have taken more than just better defense to have saved their starts last year.

Randy is the equivalent of the Phillies general manager. He’d sign Ibanez over Burrell because ‘Ibanez just knows how to drive in runs’. Completely baseless grit & heart mongering that ignores key causes for the effects he observes.

  59. Hokiehill April 13th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

in my exuberance, i was an inning off. he only went 6 shut out innings and then gave up two runs and left with two ours in the seventh. it was so close to the 8th i gave it to him.

the score was 5-0 when he gave up the two runs. the wily veteran was pitching to the score to minimize further damage.
