Game 8: Yankees at Rays

Peter Abraham
April
14

YANKEES (3-4)
Gardner CF
Jeter SS
Teixeira 1B
Swisher LF
Posada DH
Cano 2B
Nady RF
Pena 3B
Molina C

Pitching tonight: RHP A.J. Burnett (1-0, 3.38)

RAYS (4-3)
Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Pena 1B
Burrell DH
Navarro C
Zobrist RF
Iwamura 2B
Bartlett SS

Pitching tonight: RHP Matt Garza (1-0, 1.29)

A.J.Burnett vs. the Tampa Bay hitters.

Matt Garza vs. the New York hitters.

GOOD THING THEY HAVE A ROOF: It is pouring here in St. Pete and the wild is howling. Alex Rodriguez did not work out (at least outside) today at the minor-league complex in Tampa.

A.J. VS. THE RAYS: Burnett is 7-4, 2.98 in 16 career starts against the Rays. He is 2-2, 2.30 in seven starts at Tropicana Field.

CAPTAIN NEEDS A KNOCK: Derek Jeter is 1 of his last 20 and is hitting .207.

FRONTRUNNERS: The game is sold out tonight, making it 12 straight home game for the Rays. That counts the postseason.

RED HOT: Evan Longoria has 12 RBI and has hit safely in all seven games.

Back with more later.

UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Heard from a friend that Nick Swisher is getting killed on the radio back in NYC for the crime of smiling while on the mound last night.

I predicted this last night. The Yankees Morality Police love to hammer non-issues like this. The Yankees have much bigger issues than a player smiling.

UPDATE, 4:05 p.m.: Dave Eiland just said Wang had great stuff in the bullpen before the game last night. His point was that Wang is healthy and needs to take it into the game.

UPDATE, 4:42 p.m.: Wang is meeting now with Joe Girardi and Dave Eiland. I would assume this is a pep talk. … A-Rod worked out inside today at Steinbrenner Field.

UPDATE, 5:23 p.m.: Damon is out with the flu.

UPDATE, 6:04 p.m.: Here is Dave Eiland talking about Chien-Ming Wang:

UPDATE, 6:28 p.m.: Damon said he planned to play tomorrow. “I’m under the weather,” he said. “I haven’t had great sleep lately. It’s probably just caught up to me. … I’m very weak right now. Everything is creaky right now and nothing really feels good.”

UPDATE, 6:44 p.m.: Today is the anniversary of the Yankees using a black player, Elston Howard, for the first time.

UPDATE, 7:10 p.m.: We’re underway at the Trop. Enjoy the game.

UPDATE, 7:25 p.m.: Bases loaded and no outs and the Yankees scored only one run. Very inefficient.

UPDATE, 8:13 p.m.: It’s Nick Swisher’s world and we’re all just living in it. He just homered deep into the seats in right-center field. 2-0 Yankees.

Swish has four homers and 11 RBI in eight games. Only Evan Longoria (5 homers, 12 RBI) is hotter. Swisher also has scored 10 runs and has 27 total bases.

UPDATE, 8:24 p.m.: Evan Longoria just wet his pants facing Burnett. A 1-2 pitch was high (but over the plate) and Longoria hit the dirt. Burnett then fanned him looking with a heater right over the middle.

A.J. through 4 innings: 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts. He could not be pitching any better than he has so far.

UPDATE, 8:40 p.m.: A.J. Burnett looks frighteningly good tonight. 5 0 0 0 1 6. 67 pitches / 37 strikes.

UPDATE, 8:47 p.m: Seriously, they only had to give up Wilson Betemit to get Nick Swisher? Wilson Betemit? Not Woodrow Wilson, Enrique Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Willie Wilson, Wilson Phillips, Flip Wilson, Mookie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Mr. Wilson from Dennis The Menace, and Wilson the volleyball from Castaway too?

Just Wilson Betemit? Holy cow.

UPDATE, 9:02 p.m.: Burnett has 77 pitches through six innings. Question now becomes whether he gets tired over the last three innings. But he’s probably good for 110-115 or so. Can he get nine outs in 40 pitches or so? I don’t see why not.

Meanwhile, and I understand this is a secondary issue, he is saving the bullpen after last night’s disaster.

If he gives up a hit in the seventh, then you have Swisher and Mo to close it out.

UPDATE, 9:15 p.m.: OK, now they have to worry about winning the game. It’s only 2-0 and Garza has been pretty darn good, too.

UPDATE, 9:27 p.m.: The Rays didn’t get the scouting report on Brett Gardner as he is both gritty and gutty. Huge leadoff double there.

Now Jeter needs to get him to third.

UPDATE, 9:53 p.m.: Is there a better athlete in baseball than B.J. Upton? He makes those catches look easy.

Here’s a question for you, does Girardi have it in him to use Pena at SS in the ninth inning?

UPDATE, 9:58 p.m.: Brett Gardner is the new Nick Swisher. Only grittier and guttier.

Great night for GGBG. 3 for 5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored so far.

I love the sound of this:

    Teixeira 1B
    Swisher LF
    Posada DH
    Cano 2B
    Nady RF

    Tex!

Posada not catching? Who catches tomorrow?

    It’s horrendous down here…

  11. Laura - Plug it in, change the world!

    So no Ransom today. Interesting…..

  12. YankeeRay

    Why no Damon?

  13. O*Line

Damon and Matsui out of the lineup against a righty?

Molina, Pena, Nady at the bottom of the lineup?

Ouch. Looks like AJ is on his own today

  14. tampayank

the shuffling of the lineup continues, at least Matsui is benched, he needs to get his legs back…and Nady got robbed by Upton yesterday….maybe he gets it going, I’ll be at the game tonight, hoping for a better outcome

  15. m

More surprises! El Nino starting at 3B!

  16. CaptainsCorner

Tex is back and a Pena sighting!! Woohoo!!!

  17. Trevor

    Yes! Pena in.

  18. tampayank

yeah surprised Damon is out of the lineup

  19. S.o.S.

So Pena is at third base. Any chance he gets more games there if he shows us something today? Not like Ransom is a hard man to replace these days.

    from previous thread
As most of you know im not a stat geek. But if memory serve me correctly. In the past several years. Everytime the Yanks have been blown out/humiliated. They have comeback strong the next game with a win and at times started a long winning streak. Today is no different.

I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I really thought that the Yankees should have built the new stadium with a retractable roof. It would have jacked up the cost tremendously, but it would have been worth it IMO.

You guys hear Beckett was suspended for 6 games: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....p;c_id=mlb

  24. CaptainsCorner

I guess a day off to rest Damon’s legs. Matsui needed to sit and Nady’s at bats looked better yesterday. Swish has to play so to get Swish and Nady in the lineup Damon has to sit. Makes sense.

  25. Nick in SF

It’s the dawning of the new Pena era! Exciting!

  26. James

Damon is going to be ticked… his 2nd off-day in the last 3 days.

The media should go to Damon and get some quotes, he is not going to be happy at all

Glad to see Teixeira in the lineup today.

  30. will

    Damon injured yesterday. that’s why

  31. SJ44

hey Andy….why don’t you find out the info for yourself instead of ripping Pete?

One last thing….drop dead. If you can accomplish that simple request, we would have one less punk posting on the blog. That’s a positive for everybody.

  32. Betsy

Molina and Posada in the same lineup? That’s dangerous – what happens if something happens to either of them?

  33. Betsy

    Damon is injured?

  34. Trevor

    Line up:

    left
    right
    switch
    switch
    switch
    left
    right
    left
    right

  35. Night Owl

Yeah… I’m sure Jeter or Teixeria wouldn’t laugh on the mound if he was asked to pitch, because it’s so normal for position players to pitch to ML hitters.

I knew people would start picking on Swisher. His personality really is not conducive to the hollier than thou attitude that the NY media/fans carry.

We finally get a fun loving guy and someone to loosen the clubhouse and people want him to turn into a Robot like Posada.

  36. justin

where did u get damon injured yesterday ??? and if he is not injured wtf is he doing on the bench

  37. Carl

Gonna be nice to have someone who knows how to call a game behind the plate.

  38. S.o.S.

“I know I’m in the minority here, but I really thought that the Yankees should have built the new stadium with a retractable roof.”

Im with you on this one Laura. At least a half retractable roof for the infield on rainy days(prevent the muddy surfaces). But instead they went out and spent all their money on air blowers from behind the plate for Yankees at bats to help the ball sail over the fense. I mean did we really need that type of home field advantage!!!

  39. Kaseya

Of course Damon’s hurt. So much for managing his time. Injuries happen, doesn’t matter how smart girardi is with his use of the bench.

As for swishergate, I hope posada, et al lighten up. They’ve needed to for five years now.

  40. Laura - Plug it in, change the world!

“Molina and Posada in the same lineup? That’s dangerous – what happens if something happens to either of them?”

Then Swisher catches. LOL! Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

  41. X-Mann

Girardi is clearly placing a premium on defense. And after watching yesterday’s game, I can’t say I blame him.

  42. tampayank

“GOOD THING THEY HAVE A ROOF:”

I know I’m in the minority here, but I really thought that the Yankees should have built the new stadium with a retractable roof. It would have jacked up the cost tremendously, but it would have been worth it IMO.

I respectfully disagree, even w/ some rainouts, there is nothing like outdoor baseball in my opinion, the retractable roof ballparks, while nice(Houston’s looks great), to me feel more like a ‘building’ than a ballpark….I think the traditional teams should just stick to pure open ballparks; but I think it’s great for the newer franchises

  43. Guy Incognito

Hoo boy. Gardner at the top of the lineup…how much rope does this kid have? Obviously the speed is there but whether or not he has an ML bat is still in question. Same deal with Melky, and I sure hope that A-Jax is as advertised. This team can’t live without a CF who can hit and is still ruing the day they passed on Carlos Beltran.

I think the team will be loose and ready to go, having surrendered the yogurt on yesterday’s drubbing. They are professionals and the return of Tex will energize the lineup. Love batting Swisher behind Tex so he will get pitches to hit…

LET’S GO YANKEES, and no matter what we’re up on the Red Sox :)

  44. Yanksgal07

“Molina and Posada in the same lineup? That’s dangerous – what happens if something happens to either of them?”

    Swish will catch … :o ) …

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!

  45. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story

I assume Posada’s not catching tonight because of the monster last night.

Damon and Matsui are probably getting rest on the turf-especially since Damon was in the field so much last night.

  46. Arliss

Damon is 1-10 career vs Garza.

Matsui is 0-4 with 2k’s and those at bats likely occurred when Matsui could actually hit.

  47. GreenBeret7

You’re most welcome, Doreen. Love those things, myself. The pink and white ones. The watermelon and other flavors don’t get it done.

  48. S.o.S.

“I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.”

You have to excuse some of the cliff jumpers. They had to wait an extra month to watch Yankees baseball being that we didnt have any games last October. So in some ledge people. Its October now.

  49. vin

Who is the emergency catcher? Ransom?

  50. will

Of course he’s injured, why wouldn’t you put your best non injured team forward?

  51. GreenBeret7

After Ransom got his hit and RBI, today was a good day to give him off, enjoy it and finally relax again.

  52. Tom in NJ

    Damon: 1-10 career vs. Garza

  53. Laura - Plug it in, change the world!

I understand. I know my opinion is not one held by many (although S.o.S. agrees with me). I think that one day, architects will be able to build these stadiums with retractable roofs and still have them maintain that baseball stadium feel to them. It may be a long ways away, but it’s coming.

  54. Nick

The Rays ABUSED Posada last night. Not surprising that Molina is in there. AJ isn’t particularly good holding runners either. Love the move. Posada and Andy work well and will be paired tomorrow.

And Pena should save some hits too. Love Joe getting some good D in there.

  55. rodg12

Surprised Damon’s not in the line-up. Maybe he’s battling a bit of an injury or just giving him a blow on the turf???? No matter what though, Swish had to be in the line-up. Can’t sit a guy when he’s as hot as he is. I like that Pena is getting a look. At least give Ransom a break to clear his head. He did finally get a base knock last night, so maybe he can take that positive and build on it.

  56. G. Love

So with Swisher batting cleanup and already hitting 3rd in a lineup is that an admission by Girardi that Swish is a better hitter in his eyes than Nady who he consistently bats below Swisher?

Which leads me to this point? If Swisher is a hitter Girardi bats in higher spots than Nady, then is Nady the full time RF when everyone is healthy?

Just seems odd that the guy he awarded RF to over Swisher can’t bat higher than Swisher in the order.

  57. Paddy R

    is damon definitely hurt?

he’s not hitting right now, and considering the way the rays run on posada, it makes sense to play molina. swisher has to play. that leaves 2 spots (lf and dh) for posada, nady, and damon. i’d go posada and nady based on present at bats. if damon doesn’t like it, he should start hitting.

  58. joeman

Molina, Pena, Nady & Gardner in that order..throw in Jeter at this time & OUCH !!!!!!!! looks like another long night

  59. miggs

To ease some of your fears….

Check out these Red Sox stats so far this year. You think these guys are getting pulled, sent down, or traded? It may be something to ponder before flying off the handle about a Yankee not performing up to par thus far.

    Lowell .154 avg 1 run 4rbi
    Pedroia .179 avg 1rbi in 28 ABs
    Elsbury .200 avg 0rbi in 25 ABs
    Ortiz .208 avg 3rbi 5 total bases (I think he’s done. DONE)
    Drew .150 avg 2rbi
Lowrie .058 avg 1 total base ONE!
Sox have the 2nd fewest runs scored in the entire AL and 3rd lowest in all of baseball.

    Some pitching gems for you…
Okajima 13.50 era in 3 appearances
Lester 9.00 era in 2 starts

These stats are just to show its been one week of baseball. And if you want to put a lot of stock in that, the Sox are in much worse position than the Yanks.

  60. Sevrx

The only guy who is killing Swisher is Kay

Francessa actually likes Swisher, said theres nothing you can do when the game is 15-5, you can’t bury your head in the sand.

They didn’t abuse Posada. Wang allowed them to run. They were moving while he was still in his stretch.

  62. Patrick

    1. Pretty weird that Damon isn’t in the lineup again. He isn’t that fragile..

    2. Glad to see Tex is back.

    3. Pena over Ransom makes me happy.

    4. Anyone that knocks Swisher for having fun while playing a game should relax. This is one of the things I really hate about some Yankee fans; a lot of them take the game way too seriously. The whole point of playing baseball is to have fun. Lighten up!

  63. jint51

If i werent from NY i really would hate…. people just love to hear themselves talk and will make an issue out of everything.

This swisher smiling stuff is nonsense… its baseball, its a GAME… not a war.

  64. PAT M

In his second start as in Pinstripes, and AJ will get the chance to play the role of a stopper…..Glad he’s a Yankee as oppossed to Derek Lowe who was the favorite here back in Novemeber….Thanks CB….

    Guy
The only time I remember Gardner leading off this year he singled, stole second, went to 3rd on a grounder and scored on a pitch that didn’t get that far away from the catcher.
People have got to give players a chance. It is mid-April!

  67. S.o.S.

    GB,
The other day you posted a player that had a career batting average of a 1000.

I think we should include Swish to that list of perfection. O runs allowed. Has there ever been a player to not allow a run in his short baseball career?

  68. Giuseppe Franco

Melancon just threw another perfect inning for Scranton and added two more strikeouts.

  69. R+

UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Heard from a friend that Nick Swisher is getting killed on the radio back in NYC for the crime of smiling while on the mound last night.

I predicted this last night. The Yankees Morality Police love to hammer non-issues like this. The Yankees have way bigger issues than a player smiling.

Yep, Pete it’s sad. The fans clamor for a normal team with great personalities and not a corporate feel to it, and now they have a guy who keeps things loose and they want him to act like a wall-street trader. Can’t win with the fickle NY fans.

  70. miggs

I also think Molina catching might have something to do with Burnett pitching.

It worked well last time and I can see it becoming a consistent thing this year, similar to Moose and Molina last year.

This lines up Posada to catch Pettitte tomorrow and the home opener on Thursday. Its no issue because they are both day games.

  71. Patrick

“The only guy who is killing Swisher is Kay”

Does Michael Kay serve any purpose in this world beyond pissing me off? He is completely useless. In fact, he should probably just jump off a cliff if he is so miserable that he cannot bear to have anyone enjoy the GAME of baseball.

  72. joeman

they better get a lot of hits from these guys otherwise bed early again

The fruity ones are Mike-n-Ike’s, I think. I agree – I don’t like those either.

Is Damon injured or is that just speculation?

There is so much speculation, so much fretting, so much angst going on, and it’s only April. I don’t know about anyone else, but I won’t last 6 more days, much less 6 more months at this rate.

Stuff happens. It’s a 162-game season and much like life in general, on any given day any thing can happen, and sometimes for no reason at all but that it happens. I’m sorry if I’m sounding cranky, but filling out forms online referencing 17-year-old records will do that to a person. :)

    That and too much sugar.

  74. GreenBeret7

Melancon pitches the 9th inning. 2 strikeouts. 11 pitches, and no, he’s not getting called up unless there’s an injury before June.

  75. SJ44

Fans ripping Swisher are just another group of dumb Yankee fans. A number that sadly seems to be growing by the day.

It was a blowout April game. Get over it, and get over yourselves.

They put in the first baseman to pitch and he pitched a scoreless inning with a K.

    Sorry but, that’s hysterical.

Thank God the players are not as uptight as some of the fans.

  76. gayle

The funny things is that Kay would never tell Swisher to his face that what he thinks about what he did last night and certainly would not put it in the terms that he is today.

Typical Kay does one thing on his radio show and other when calling Yankee games that is why I cannot take him seriously in either role.

  77. m

Melancon sits down the side in the bottom of the 10th. 11 pitches.

  78. Minnesota Yankee Fan

Swisher pitching the 8th was the best part of the game. What a character. I think he will be good for the clubhouse……….

I was wondering who exactly was killing Swisher. Kay was killing him last night, too. It’s not surprising. Maybe he has nothing better to talk about.

  81. Laura - Plug it in, change the world!

I doubt that Damon is hurt. Girardi likes to rest Damon on the turf. He doesn’t want him playing 3 straight games on it. Go back to last year and I bet you’ll find he rested him then too.

Man, when did NYY fans turn into these fragile beings? One thing out of whack and people are ready to slit their wrists. These last 8 years w/o a title is really taking a toll on people.

I went 1979-1995 w/o a title and managed to survive. It can be done.

  84. Danny

Posada started it with his dumb comments about how it wasn’t funny and no one was laughing. Kay and co are just echoing what he said.

Just like Santana said Murphy cost us the game. Even if he didn’t mean it like that, it comes off like you’re throwing someone under the bus.

Posada needs to calm down and get off his high horse.

I say AJ is lights out tonight. Yanks at +102 on my square book, +107 for the sharpies. :(

  88. Scorpio

Kay is an idiot, I actually turned off YES when the score was 15-2 so I missed the Swisher the pitcher scene but I can only imagine Kay’s annoying hysterics.

  89. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story

Those killing Swisher for smiling need to take a long, hard look at their own priorities.

And guys, Damon’s not hurt. Bad numbers against Garza + turf on 35+ legs = good night to give a player a rest.

Anyway, it lets Joe G keep Swish, Nady and Teixxeira in the line up-all of whom are currently performing better.

Swisher’s strikeout of Kapler can be seen on the Yes network site, in case you missed it.

    http://web.yesnetwork.com/index.jsp

  91. S.o.S.

Still a good post miggs. I wonder if they have the depth in the minor leagues to deal with the slow start of some aging players. Also, If we are panicking about Wang. What are the Sox thinking about Lester . He was one of the top 3 lefties in baseball and has a 9 era. Thats not even mentioning the last place standings. As the saying goes. Players in the end of the year end up playing to what the back of their baseball cards numbers show.

  92. Guard

The only guy in the media who has made a big deal is Kay

The papers have been pretty quiet (mostly focused on Citi Field) and WFAN hasn’t made a big deal out of it.

  93. Swisher Brandon (I LOVE ME SOME ME !)

Nick’s not getting killed, Micheal Kay is just starting crap.

    P.S. wholely OBP % BATMAN !

    Jeter
    Teixeira
    Swisher
    Posada
    Cano

YES PENA IS STARTING AT 3B ! HALLELUJAH !

  94. GreenBeret7

And Jackson leads off the 10th with a 4 pitch walk and steals 2nd base.

  95. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009)

the only one getting his big ole’ head twisted about it is kay.

  96. Swisher Brandon (I LOVE ME SOME ME !)

    HOLY *

  97. Patrick

I could definitely see Robertson and Melancon replacing Albaladejo and Veras at some point this season. The two former guys are tearing up AAA and are better pitchers than the latter.

I still like what Coke, Bruney, Marte and Ramirez bring to the table. Veras and Albaladejo are still good but I could stand to lose them.

  98. Bob(The Original)

The 7th game of the season, getting blown out, and a player tries to lighten the mood a little bit, yeah that is just awful.

If it were late summer and the Yanks were in a pennant race it would be a different story.

Some days it really is getting embarrasing to be a Yankee fan. Way too many ignorant clowns call themselves fans of this team.

  99. Swisher Brandon (I LOVE ME SOME ME !)

‘And Jackson leads off the 10th with a 4 pitch walk and steals 2nd base.’

GB I can’t wait till he gets here in Sept.

    Doreen,

    I think it’s typical overreaction.

  101. Scorpio

Maybe the Sox should trade Lester & Yanks trade Wang cause back-2-back stinkers is surely a sign of major decline!!!

    (sarcasm emphasized)

  102. GreenBeret7

Berroa doubles and scores Jackson. 1 out in the 10th, Scranton up 4-3.

  103. Trevor

Melancon pitching well again. Both Robertson & Melancon appear to be too good for AAA.
So no one is being called up or sent down? Are the Yankees banking on Burnett Pettitte going deep?

  104. Laura - Plug it in, change the world!

“Dave Eiland just said Wang had great stuff in the bullpen before the game last night. His point was that Wang is healthy and needs to take it into the game.”

Could it be that Wang has developed a case of “mound fright”? Don’t laugh. That could be it. A lot of sports is mental. He pitches fine when nobody is looking. Once he sees the bright lights, he loses it. This could possibly be something the Yankees should look in to.

Thank God No Matsui… I think he needs a few days off. Watch, the yanks come out swinging tonight and have more pep in the lineup…

  108. Wave Your Hat

Judging by the comments, I think a large majority of commenters on Pete’s blog had no problem with Swisher last night.

Seeing that Nick’s batting cleanup tonight, I don’t think Girardi had a problem with Swisher either.

My guess is it might have offended some element of the Yankee front office, and Jorge (who can be excitable sometimes), and that’s about it.

  109. Giuseppe Franco

Jackson walked, stole second, and then scored on a double from Berroa to take a 4-3 lead in the 10th.

Melancon will pitch the Bot 10th and get the win if he nails it down.

  110. G. Love

When I read on the blog last night that Swisher pitched, I was pissed.

Pissed that I missed it. I watched it on demand on Fios (they have the game on demand for free now) and loved it.

Swisher and his attitude is exactly what fans have missed on this team. The corporate quiet millionaires club sucked the life and fun out of the team.

Now with guys like Joba, Swish, AJ and CC to some extent we’re seeing players who wear their hearts a little on their sleeves and I am THRILLED for that.

I’m personally going to write Cashman a letter of apology for some of the things I’ve said about him in here just for the fact that he turned garbage (Betemit) into Swisher.

I don’t know if Swisher is going to be great the whole year, but his attitude is what is going to help shift this group from a “club” into a “team”.

I have no doubts that when Boston pulls their hitting our best hitters routine that Swisher won’t be heavily involved in the incident to follow somehow.

The fans here have been DYING for a player with his attitude.

Kay should shut it and go back to hawking his co-hosts awful CD’s.

  111. jennifer

I’ve had the fan on since 1ish and haven’t heard anyone kill him. I think it is Kay who is killing him.

  112. KWAN

Jeter had no problem with Swisher, he said he was chuckling too. The starters were all on the top step watching him– Joba, CC, AJ, and even Andy.

Hell, even Tony Pena had to hold back laughter if you watched him in the dugout next to Joe.

Posada needs to lighten up. The rest of the team didn’t find it offensive.

  113. joeman

Melky playing anywhere for the Yankees is a joke

  114. Tim Sherman

Is it me or is this stuff really being written during the first week of the season? There is not enough data to make an accurate judgement of how anyone will perform this season. Those that are hot will cool down and those that are cold will probably get better based on their lifetime stats. As for Gardner, the only way to tell if he is a major leaguer is to let him play and find out. Last night was horrible, just as the first two games were, but this team is better than that. Patience is a virtue.

  115. randy l.

“Does Michael Kay serve any purpose in this world beyond pissing me off?”

    patrick-

good point. i already do that so that makes him redundant :)

  116. m

AJ walked, stole 2nd and scored on Berroa’s double. 2 outs with Russo at the plate & Berroa in scoring position. Scranton up 4-3.

Francessa has been very complimentary of Swisher… he likes his personality. Normally it is Francessa who makes a big deal out of this stuff, but not today.

  121. Brian NYY

This is a classic example of Michael Kay and his holier than though approach to baseball.

Blow-outs happen and NICK SWISHER was pitching. That alone is funny.

The only person that shouldn’t have been laughing is Wang. Everyone else, have a laugh and get ready for game 8 of 162.

I went 1979-1995 w/o a title and managed to survive. It can be done.

It just hasn’t taken enough of a toll to knock them out of here. And for us old foggies, we also managed to survive from 1963 to 1976. :-)

For God’s sake. The guy hasn’t faced live batters in a real game since June. How many times have you heard pitchers say there’s no substitute for facing live batters? Seriously, does everyone have to over react and panic and diagnose him with physcological diseases because he’s rusty and had 2 bad starts? Sinker ball pitchers more than anyone else need their mechanics perfect to be succesful. His are off, it’s as simple as that. I’m fairly confident he’ll figure it out.

  126. Y26

Looks like is it up to AJ and Andy the next 2 days to go atleast 7. Doesn’t look like any moves will be made.

I don’t think Jorge was offended, and anyway a good fight in the dugout, ala Carlos Zambrano vs. Michael Barrett didn’t seem to hurt the Cubs.

Just kidding of course! Posada and Swisher’s play have been the two offensive shining lights so far. I’m hoping before the season is over, that the Yankees are so far ahead, that Swisher gets to play every position during a game!

Thank’s Nick in SF….I’m also playing the Yanks tonight….I’ll be seeing the Yanks for the first time tonight…..It did seem to me that Giradi might have over managed in the 8th inning in the Joba game as I listened to that game…..Veras and Coke are not Nelson and Stanton….2 outs in the 8th and lose is a tough way to go……I’m certain there was much dialog here about those moves……

  138. Free Booze

and a yankee related post- michael kay bothers me. it’s the same old schtick that half the time has nothing to do with baseball as a game but instead some inside joke that seems to be killed for everybody but him. and Swisher, how can you not like him? I think he’d play any position you asked him to and then give you the shirt off his back when he’s done and still be smiling.

  139. Nick

Judging from that Eliand quote, you have to question Wang’s mental makeup.

Giving up 10 runs to the Indians and getting booed off the mound s not what this guy needs. They better be sure he is up to it.

  151. JP

I don’t understand what the problem is here. Swisher is a solid player, who happens to be carrying the team offensively now and is a true asset with his position playing flexiblity. He “took one for the team” by pitching last night and was delighted that he got them through the inning without any further damage. It was a joke for him even to be out there. So what that he smiled on the mound. And why is the criticism coming from New York?!?!? (If Tampa came down hard on him, I’d understand it. But New York?) I LOVE the team (always have), but I think Swisher and his honest, fun-loving, good natured outlook on life and the game are a GREAT addition to the team.

  152. saucY

the yankees don’t need a retractable roof. they have arrangments for that old guy with the giant red umbrella to stop by the stadium, if needed…

  153. curious

“So with Swisher batting cleanup and already hitting 3rd in a lineup is that an admission by Girardi that Swish is a better hitter in his eyes than Nady who he consistently bats below Swisher?”

    yes G.

i think it’s pretty obvious that Swisher has jumped Nady on Girardi’s depth chart.

    nothing wrong with that.

Nady looked better in Spring Training, but Girardi isn’t going to sit red-hot Swisher.

Girardi is smart enough to get everyone ABs. and that’s exactly what he has been doing (though he could bat 9 Babe Ruths and 90% of the posts here would be complaints).

  154. Trevor

Melancon strikes out Mets top hitting prospect Fernando Martinez.

  155. no.27

I can understand not putting Damon in center against a team with as much speed as the Rays, but I hope Girardi gives it a try one of these days. Having 3 terrible hitters in a row really takes away from the lineup.

  164. Giuseppe Franco

Melancon nails it down in the 10th and gets the win. Scranton wins their sixth straight to start the season.

I’d say another good performance for Melancon today:

    2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K — 27 pitches, 20 strikes

He has certainly gotten off to a hot start:

    5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K

  165. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story

I thought it was supposed to be _hard_ to score goals in soccer?

  166. GreenBeret7

Melancon ends the game with 2 strikeouts. Only base runner was on a tough error on Berroa at third. (I’m watching on MILBTV.) Final line, 2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 4 strikeouts. 27 pitches, 20 strikes

  167. pat

The media got 2 days out of Alex looking at himself in a mirror and you are begrudging them a day of Swisher laughing?

  168. Jerkface

I would be very surprised if Nick Swisher is not one of the most well liked players in baseball. I dont know if it was visable or mentioned on the TV broadcast but when CC robbed him of his potential 2nd HR of the night/booming double, he tipped his helmet to CC on the way back to the dugout.

He was very friendly with every ray who made it to first base(all of them), and generally looked like an affable dude.

Gabe Kapler is a suspected(known?) steroid user, so I’m not sure what he has done to garner the respect of the rest of baseball.

  169. m

Don’t know if this is the most current info, but Melancon has faced 18 batters and has 11 strikeouts. Can’t seem to find an ERA for him.

  170. Nick in SF

Free Booze: the scoring is by aggregate goals over the two games. Because Chelsea won 3-1 at Anfield, Liverpool would have to win by 2 right now to tie up the aggregate score.

Then the first tiebreaker is away goals. Chelsea got 3 away goals in the first leg, so Liverpool needed 3 away goals today to negate that advantage. They now have 4 away goals, so they would now win that tiebreaker if they could score two more goals to tie up the aggregate. Which means there couldn’t be an overtime period.

But the point looks to be moot.

  171. C

i think part of the reason he is killing swisher is because if he doesnt all the mets fan will call up and kill him a homer and said if that was a mets doing it he will be calling for his head

he seems like a guy that fits in well with winning teams. i don’t like clowns , but swisher seems like someone who knows when to turn the fooling around on and off and he seems to get the job done when it matters.

it also doesn’t bother me that posada was in a bad mood about it. a little edginess is not a bad thing on a team.

Kevin Millar is a clown, Nick Swisher is not (my opinion).

Swish is a fun guy that actually enjoys the game of baseball (what novel concept!). Whenever I see him play though, it seems like he is trying his hardest to win the game. There is a difference between being a clown and having fun.

Okay, so nobody was laughing. At least not in Posada’s eyes. Derek Jeter had a different take, saying “you have no choice” but to laugh when things get that out of hand.

“Whether Swish pitched or not, it’s still the same result,” Jeter said. “You get a chuckle out of it because it’s him and he’s not going to stop talking about it.”

bdog in case you missed the UEFA scoring- liverpool was eliminated because they lost the first leg of the series 3-1 at home. the scoring is aggregate which is kinda neat. i’m just saying there’s room for different personalities on winning teams.

red sox fans are going to hate swisher if he stays playing well. he has the kind of personality that can really annoy the opposition. i remember him annoying me when he was with the a’s.

he’s cocky or confident depending on your point of view. i’m just happy that cashman made the deal to get him. this is one move of his that i like. according to the torre book he got betemit at the expense of bernie. so he’s made amends for that with swisher. betimit was just a mistake.

nothing like trading a mistake for someone good.

  210. Swisher Brandon (I LOVE ME SOME ME !)

I just think people need to loosen the strangle hold fitted tie, no one, from the new generation of Yankees fans no one loves the uptight bunch, you love a guy Swisher you can’t believe he’s here, part of me thinks he would be perfect for the Mets and that’s sad because when is it that the Yankees all the sudden took baseball as a 9 to 5 job instead of a game and really that’s the stuff that seperates a team from being a team, be competitive but don’t be uptight and bring people down about stuff. It’s a game no one dies on the field unless it’s a horrific event.

Well, Doreen, I just assumed that with 4 kids, two dogs and a husband, you’d ground them off to the nub. My ex-wife always said that I’d be the death of her. She’s got me to thank for her long life. She’s staying alive to spite me.

j/k. She’s a great lady, and we’ve always enjoyed time together, even after we divorced. A good day was going to the grocercy store with her and embarrassing her by telling her that I couldn’t find her “Skoal”….in a very loud voice. southern women don’t think that’s funny for some reason.

  215. Joey

All depends on how the pen is performing.

They may prefer to wait on Melancon but they might not have a choice. As usual, performance at the big league club determines these things.

  216. jennifer

Kapler left the Boston Red Sox for Japan’s Yomiuri Giants after the 2004 World Series. He elected to leave for more money (a $2 million deal plus a $700,000 signing bonus, compared to the $750,000 salary he received from the Sox), and the chance to prove he could be an everyday player. After struggling and eventually being waived in July by the Yomiuri Giants, Kapler was immediately signed by the Red Sox after clearing Japanese Central League waivers.

    http://sonsofsamhorn.net/wiki/.....abe_Kapler

Gabe was appointed Manager of the Greenville Drive at the end of the 2006 season. Gabe returned to the majors in 2008 as a utility outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Albaledejo + Veras or Bruney + Miranda for Leo Nunez..something like that.

  225. Patrick

What makes you think Melancon needs more AAA experience? He’s dominated every level of the minors. Good/polished relievers are usually fast movers. Melancon does not need more minor league experience.

HA, I found out the truth. You are right, Kapler went to Japan shortly after the 2004 world series, couldn’t make it in Japan, and came back in July 2005. Injuried himself in September 2005, then announced his “retirement in Decemeber of 2006″. THEN, he went on to manage Boston’s single-A team for a year.

Didn’t sound as bad as I remembered it. But Posada is clearly frustrated that he can’t help.

Posada motioned several times during the game for Wang to keep the ball down, but he could not fix his mechanics.

“We’ve got to get him down in the zone, and I can’t do it,” Posada said. “Wanger’s better than that, and he knows it. Right now, he’s just going through some delivery problems.”

  243. Patrick

“Because he’s 1 yr. off TJS and has 105.1 IP of minor league experience”

2 years off TJ surgery – he had the surgery at the end of 2006. He was completely healthy last season. 105 IP is plenty of minor league experience, especially for a reliever. That is like 2 full seasons in the minors. The only way he got through so many innings is because he’s so polished.

Melancon is 100% ready for the majors, the only reason he isn’t up is because of arbitration.

  244. Ed H.

Swisher’s pitching stint made my night last night. I think that he had just the right attitude: When life deals you lemons, make lemonade. I’d rather have the team loose and ready to go tonight rather than dark, brooding and self-flagellating, as Kay would seem to prefer.

Reminds me of the story about the time that Mantle was ragging on Yogi about how easy it is to call a game. Whitey told Mantle to go ahead and call his game that day and Mickey did, sending in signals from center field. They laughed their way through the game, and they won. What do you think of dem apples, Mr. Posada?

I’m convinced some people have negative IQ’s and I likened merely skimming the thread to receiving a sudden, surprise non-surgical vasectomy with a blunt object.

I’m reminded of why to stay away during games. Especially losing games. Think, people: Its a game. Sometimes you lose. In baseball, in fact, it’s unusual when a team loses fewer than 10 games in a month. You do yourself absolutely no good by getting so worked up about what’s happening, so often, especially when you’re not actually taking part in the game. It’s just a game …. entertainment.Try sitting back and relaxing when it’s not going so well. Or just flip the channel. The fan and media reaction is adding to the absurdity of it all. The story is Wang and he will be fine.

Watching Mark Fidrych pitching a June 1976 game against the Yankees on MLB right now. Willie Randolph’s rookie season. Looks so young.

Anyway, amazing how quickly those 30-year-old games move. Pitchers work fast and no one takes a lot of pitches or steps out of the box.

Another thing, this was a Monday Night Baseball game – so it’s no Yankees classic. :)

what we do know for sure is that cody can’t play 3rd,and he’s an automatic out.

There’s a few of those right now, including everyone’s darling. He’d have 3 errors if Giambi was still at first base. 1-20 and 5 strikeouts with 14 ground balls isn’t exactly carrying his weight, either.

I’ve wondered about Milledge for a while. While not having any first hand experience seeing him play, by reports he is a good athlete; that and young, something we seem to need. I wonder if Billy Epler’s scouts have checked him out to see what’s wrong with him, and if it’s correctable to the point of him becoming a good OF. If so, then there may be a match to be made.

And not just for 2009. With three OFs contracts expiring in the offseason (Damon, Nady, and Hideki), I can see a longterm opening.

“In addition, the stadium is the only one in the Major Leagues that has implemented wheelchair lifts in both dugouts, allowing wheelchair users direct access to both the players’ bench and the field.

I wonder if Robinson Cano had been joking on the bench with Melky last night if people would have felt the same way? Somehow I doubt it.

If Swisher had hit .219 with the Yankees last year he would have been KILLED on this blog. Absolutely KILLED regardless of how fun loving he is. Ozzie Guillen surely didn’t think he was a very fun loving guy last year when he was on the White Sox.

It’ll be interesting to see what the folks on this blog say if Swisher has another year like the one he had last year.

I can’t count how many times I had to read about Robinson Cano and his so called dumb smile and the fact that he’s not a winning player on this blog last year.

Now the team NEEDS somebody like Swisher and his personality to bring the team together.

You certainly make some valid points. But not everyone wanted to get rid of Cano or made racist generalizations about him.

When Cano can come in and throw a scoreless inning, he’ll get some bonus cool points, too.

When Swisher’s offensive struggles affect his fielding, he’ll be deducted accordingly.

And finally, when Swisher can’t even field a simple grounder in a day game because he loves the night life, we’ll call him out on it, too.

We may be harsh, but we try our best to be fair. ;)

GLove, I agree. I didn’t like last night, but not because of anything Swisher did. I admire people who are passionate about and enjoy life and Nick certainly does, lol. It’s not just Nick, though – you’re right. AJ, CC, Tex – they’ve put their own stamp on the clubhouse. Given that they are so new and coming into a veteran clubhouse, that’s not easy to do. I’m going to see if I can find the clip on You Tub – apparently the starters were watching Nick and getting a kick out of it, lol. It’s better than moping around and worrying, eating their hearts out. I also agree with Randy – I’m glad Jorge was angry. Isn’t this what people were missing for so long?

  338. CB

“I can’t count how many times I had to read about Robinson Cano and his so called dumb smile and the fact that he’s not a winning player on this blog last year.”

I agree with that. I do find it odd that when Swisher laughs it’s somehow him keeping things loose but were Cano to do the same it’s simply a sign of him not being serious and being lazy.

And that is not simply limited to Cano’s underperformance last year.

Even the year before when Cano had a terrific year both defensively and at the plate many Yankee fans were incensed about Cano smiling or laughing or not taking the game “serious” enough.

But somehow when Swisher does it it’s a huge team plus?

I have no idea at all why there is this differing reaction but it’s there.

I was also thinking about people’s reaction to some of the comments Ian Kennedy made last year where he was perceived as not being serious enough or taking the game to hear enough. But of course that can be explained by Kennedy’s awful performance. Same thing for Melky.

But Cano is harder to explain because he was killed for joking around while performing at an all star caliber.

  339. pat

Where did this Cano loves the night life stuff come from?

  340. vin

    raymagnetic,

Regarding the perception of Cano and Swisher…

To me, you have to pick your moments to act out. If Swisher were struggling at the plate, he wouldn’t have gotten the same reception from us. None of us whined about Robi when he misplayed grounder while hitting .340… just don’t do it when you’re hitting .260.

Not all that different from real life. If you’re performing well at work, and the company is going strong – then by all means have a good time with it. But don’t play a practical joke on your boss if you’re not getting the job done, or if he/she has just laid some people off.

He will be back in the booth on May 17, for the Twins at the Yankees. The significance? It will be the 11th anniversary of Wells’ perfect game — against the Twins, in the old Yankee Stadium.

“I’m watching the end of that 1976 game where Mark Fidrych beat the Yankees. My gosh, seeing how genuine a person Fidrych was.”

I think Fidrych threw 250 innings as a rookie. He’s always one of the guys I think about when people start talking about the good old days when there were no innings limits and baseball players were men, etc., etc.

Fidrych wasn’t really the same afterwards – always injured.

250 innings when he was 21.

The people who were killing Cano are probably the same people who are ripping Swisher now. Cano and Swisher are inherently different… the game LOOKS like it comes so easy to Robi, as opposed to a guy who has to work hard at it, like Swisher. No of course, they’re both tremendous talents (relatively) and they both work their tails off… but Cano has that smooth air about him that can be off-putting to some – especially when he botches a groundball, or gives away an at-bat.

2800 out of 3600 yanks fans think the yanks will win the whoole thing this year – we are an optimistic bunch.

Im not worried about wang. I think 2 horrible starts happens just because without rhyme or reason. However, if he comes out next starts and bombs once again, I think they may be overlooking a mechanical flaw because 3 horrendous starts for wang doesnt happened just because, No need to worry …. yet.

Glad to see tex is back in but now damon is out. Without arod, the lineup looks easier and without tex, the lineup looked weak. Hopefully, everyone can stay reasonably healthy until arod is back in it because without him, another major player missing just looks bad.

Unfortunately, AJ is under pressure to contain a losing streak for his second straight start. The good thing about having a rotation of CC, wang, AJ, Pettitte, Joba is that any of them can win on any night but its unfortunate that AJ is being relief upon to stop the bleeding to starts in a row.

When people imitate me they generally say things that you wouldn’t want your wife to hear.

“Actually, I like the non-move. The starters are going to have to give length. And the relievers we have are going to have to get the job done.”

Fortunately, the 4 relievers not used yesterday are Girardi’s go-to guys. Torre probably would’ve emptied the pen, besides Mo.

  383. dave

One thing i dont really get is when did phil coke become incapable of pitching 4 or 5 innings and being a long man? i KNOW he was a starter last year and i know the yanks dont have a legit long man in the pen … so why is coke not filling the role when need be? Michael kay must have said about 100 times last night that the yanks have no long man and i kept thinking couldnt phil coke go 4 innings? Obviously I am wrong here but i just want to know why coke can no longer throw more than an inning or two when he started not even a year ago – its just mop up duty afterall.

The hypocrisy by some posters on this board is laughable at times, it really and truly is laughable.
    ===========================================
Wow, feel like I wrote this. And I did – repeatedly, last year, and all the racists on here got jumpy and protested too much.

I thought Melky would have gotten the start given his two hits last night.
    ============================================

Here’s why Melky played last night. Girardi knows that Wang is a contact hitter, and if the ball ain’t sinking it’s going to be up. That means balls hit to the outfield. Combine that with Girardi’s apprehension about Posada throwing runners out, and you have the reason for Melky’s presence: fear of Tampa taking the extra base.

Tonight, it’s different, because AJ has swing & miss stuff, and Girardi is hoping the impatient Tampa lineup does just that. He also has Molina behind the plate, the keep the Rays somewhat honest at the back-end up-the-middle position.

I laughed when the reason given was the LHP. Gimme a break.

    =================================================
Right, but somehow, people unconsciously equate skill with laziness. It’s as if they’re not only talented, but that they don’t get any credit for developing the skill from that talent; it’s like they’re just idiot savants. In Abreu’s case, people actually say he’s not “clutch” and doesn’t “battle.”

I would bet you that if a caucasian player who furrowed his brow were up there fouling off pitches and demonstrating a great eye, running every count to 3-2 and getting hits with RISP and two outs, he’d be called “gutty” and a “battler.” But Abreu is from the Carribbean, and he smiles a great deal. Would people here admit they’d never think of him as clutch and a “tough” AB?

  414. Doreen (?NotDeadYet?)

The people at MLB were having some fun with the Swish-pitcher stuff, fyi They conjectured that “the people in NY” probably didn’t like it. My take is that most of us here were okay with it, and I’d be willing to bet a majority of Yankees fans were more upset with Wang’s problems than Nick Swisher doing his thing out there in the 8th in a game that was already way out of hand.

    I don’t like Garza.

I just wanted to comment regarding the earlier poster(s?) who commented on the changing lineups. The way Girardi needs to balance out the at-bats and make the best use of his extra outfielders plus Matsui and getting Posada to DH every once in a while, I wonder why anyone figured they’d see a set lineup this season?

Well, I must say, the umitigated and bilious hatred for both Melky and Cano on this board last year – and for Melky this year, underscores this truth.

It’s interesting, since the two are at completely different levels in terms of ability. Cano had a bad year, and has been ridiculed and mocked by some very stupid people on this site. They mourn for a “gritty” player like Pedroia – another example of The Great White Hope.

Really, it’s transparent and revolting. It’s also noteworthy that the smarter posters on here tend to make cirticisms devoid of emotion and are specific. Kay wishes he played baseball so bad! He has no idea what its like to be in a clubhouse and shouldn’t act like he does.

  510. teddy

mark, don’t try to understand it. My wife tells me that not all women are liberated and some want to be treated like they’re helpless and need protection. Those are the ones that call themselves girls I guess. The big problem is trying to figure out which ones are which.

  511. Boston Dave

    Garza at 40 pitches.

that’s more like it. if they can keep making him work (even the Molina at bat wasn’t bad), they’ll get to him eventually.

  512. Ryan (Im just waiting till the shine wears off)

And if by pundit you meant poster…then yes that was my prediction thus I drafted him on every one of my fantasy teams and laid 100 dollars on him to be the cy young and another 100 that he would win 20.

It would be nice to get 5 of those wins out of the way in april.

  513. Bronx Jeers

I think Harold Reynolds picked AJ as CY winner.

What says Jackie Robinson day better than championship cowbells? Stay classy, Tampa.

“We cannot allow this team to represent the American League again.”

LOL – I haven’t been to a Tampa Yankee game in about 5-6 years. The last time I was there they had a promotion – turn in your cap for a Rays cap.

The crowd must have been 75-25 Yankee fans. Many were not as polite as I was when asked at the gate if I wanted to turn in my Yanks cap in for a Rays cap..haha

They have come a long way from those sad days…

  517. Benny ( guess who's in tampa) Blanco

that sound scared me. I thought that was out.

After raising their AL Championship banner at the April 13 home opener, the Rays will give away replicas of their AL championship rings on April 14, championship cowbells on April 15, replicas of the championship trophy on April 18 and championship pennants on April 19.”

We cannot allow this team to represent the American League again.

Hillbillies. This is why parity sucks. It is like all the younglings going out on New Years Eve with just the idea of puking.

buck martinez had aj winning the cy award on mlb homeplate on xm radio, i hate his voice but he might be on to something

Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup / Clank ), wonder what it would be to catch him ????

  524. vin

Uh oh… Sterling is going on his “pre-fab” noise rant. He always harps on that when they play there, that all it does is making me even more aware of it, and drives me crazy. Hey Sterling, stick to missing home run calls, will ya?!

  525. jennifer

Okay MY9 stinks, sound keeps cutting out.

  526. Carl

    CC isn’t either Mark.

  527. jennifer

  529. jennifer

  530. Mark

    It hit the ground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  531. miggs

Hey “pal” it doesn’t make me uncomfortable.

Its an uneducated blanket statement. And something like that is completely subjective and you have absolutely nothing to back it up.

How about this? I can’t stand Melky because he has regressed the past 2 years, he has mental lapses in the field, and frankly I don’t think he gives maximum effort.

I have never ripped Cano, and the comment section of this blog is usually very divided on Cano, some people support him strongly (myself being one of them) and others rip him. Personally, I think he tries hard, has great talent, and will be one of the best 2nd basemen in the league for a long time.

Guess what? Neither of those opinions has anything to do with the player’s background, race, of other nonsense. Its based upon watching them play. I can’t stand Carl Pavano, Josh Bectett, or Curt Schilling either, does that mean I’m racist against whites? Gary Sheffield is one of my least favorite players, I must hate blacks too right?

Your statement is just plain dumb and does not reflect with any accuracy the views of the majority of fans or bloggers. I’m sure that’s not true for some people, but for most it is.

I can’t stand Melky because he’s lazy and he doesn’t help my team win. He has not made any adjustments or shown any improvement since 2007. That’s probably why most fans don’t like him.

Playing the race card is pathetic in this situation.

  532. DT

“Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup / Clank ), wonder what it would be to catch him ????”

Clank would take that awesome AJ curve ball off the cup, swear and moan, and then cuss Cashman for signing him. ;-)

  533. jennifer

So now the ump gives them a gift ball?

The key is it is okay for women to call themselves girls, or perhaps those trusted men in their lives. But co-workers and casual acquaintances – not so much.

  538. m

AJ getting squeezed on some of the pitches IMO.

  539. will

Tampa announcers are outraged that the ball did hit him LOL

  540. GreenBeret7

Control was a bit off that inning, but, he got through without damage. All in all, a nice start so far tonight for Burnett.

  541. S.o.S.

If Burnett pulls through today. I think his nickname should be “THE NEGOTIATOR”. He consistantly seems to convince people to come off the ledge. He also puts the negative nancies to bed early.

Doesn’t make any difference whether the ball hit the dirt first, if the ball hits the batter after, it’s still a hit batter.

  549. Mark

Miggs: I completely agree with you but to say that Melky does not try hard is wrong. You don’t know how hard he tries, this spring training instead of going to the WBC he stayed in camp and tried to win the job, and to say that Melky never helped the team win is just being ignorant.

You may not like Melky because you don;t think he is a good player, but that is no reason to trash his work ethic when you know nothing about it

    Doreen,

I don’t like Garza either. Besides being a very good pitcher, he twitches like a chronic.

  556. MN John

If this is how they are going to look against good pitching all year, we better hope and pray that CC and AJ have career years, because this offense looks REALLY bad. Game 8 or not, this looks as bad if not worse than last years offense

  557. Cor Shep

  592. Bronx Jeers

  611. jennifer

Can someone tell me why he is able to wag his glove around like that.

  612. mark

Doreen that’s not the way I was educated about it. It’s not a switch you should flip on and off at someone’s convenience on what they call themselves. Then some emales wonder why they’re not taken seriously. Make up your minds. I don’t know any male out of college who calls himself a boy. Seems they know the difference. The ladies where I work said females stop being girls the same time males stop being boys. I respect that. I’m not about to relearn a whole new way because some female wants to be a tough cookie and a cupcake at the same time. Thanks but no thanks.

  624. Ryan (Im just waiting till the shine wears off)

Posada is really starting to piss me off more and more…I just really despise the way he goes about his business. When Swish punished that ball after being thrown at even coney said that everyone on the bench should have been up yelling at Garza. Yet posada cant even muster any kind of emotion when celebrating with swish at the plate.

  625. BXRonny

LOL Swisher is the Man, I loved his reaction after garza threw him the ball to the head…. He was like umm, i’ll get my chance and HE DID …. !

  626. Rick

Only a spineless pinata like Selig would approve cowbells in a major league venue.
They’re not even used in Class A fields as promotional items but the Rays need to put rumps in seats.

  627. inchcape

HAHA! Did anyone catch Swisher offer Jeter and Tex the Red Bull he was drinking out of? WHAT A TEAM PLAYER!

Maybe he needs to give some to Jorge?

  628. m

Jeter’s range looked fine there. Okay, he moved 3 mm. But it looked fine.

  629. BXRonny

SWISHER FOR MVP!!!!!!!! At least with the Yankees he’s the MVP ON and OFF the field.. Gotta appreciate that! :)

  630. Psyluk

Is Burnett throwing too many curveballs? I know it’s the 2nd time in the lineup, but he just threw 3 in a row to Crawford without offering that fastball. I can’t complain about the result, but I wonder how throwing that many curveballs will have an effect on his arm later in the season.

  631. jennifer

it would be however be nice to catch burnett. you’d have a lot to work with.

actually the worst thing that happened to me was when mickey mahler bounced a ball off the plate that came up and hit me in the throat. i was wondering why the trainer was calling the emt’s as i was lying on a table with my throat packed in ice. it turns out that if your voice box is broken the swelling cuts off the blood flow to your brain.

i was ok , but couldn’t talk for a week. some people thought that was an improvement.

Nice way to win brownie points in Yankeeland.

Good to see someone respond to a high hard one in the next frame. Granted, Garza’s may or may not have been intentional but Butnett put it out there that he’s got no problem with responding. Yankee fans will love that.

Because the Rays aren’t a team that lets you go tic for tac with them.
    They just start fighting you.

BTW if it was Mussina he would have not even brushed anyone off the plate.

  663. jennifer

sa- me too. But I hope it is over now. You dusted one of ours, we dusted one of yours.

  664. vin

“nope. watching the Tampa guys on Extra Innings TV.
    What did they say?”

Suzyn was telling John about a friend (or someone) who was giving suggestions for Nick Swisher homerun calls. One was if the fountains were still in KC, and he hit one into them, it would be “Swish splash, that ball is taking a bath.” Odd.

  665. randy l.

that was a very nice country hardball exchange with garza/ swisher and burnett/longoria.

i like how swisher never even looked at garza.

    just answered with a bomb.

  666. jennifer

.: Evan Longoria just wet his pants facing Burnett. A 1-2 pitch was high (but over the plate) and Longoria hit the dirt. Burnett then fanned him looking with a heater right over the middle.

  675. MN John

Are you kidding me? Hit and run, just bunt. You finally have a leadoff hitter on base and a chance to move him in scoring position? I like puting a play on, but a wrong combo to try to hit and run wih in that spot. Now, it’s inning over.

Interesting comment by Pete about Longoria. Wonder if Longoria reacted that way because he was expecting something from Burnett. Going up to hit already intimidated isn’t a good way to hit.

    haha Vin –

    yeah, I’m Sterling’s secret bud.

Uhhh Nick. Middle Earth!! Ha!! How would you know that if you never watched it? You wouldnt happen to be one of those people who spends a week sleeping on the curb of the theatre waiting for the L.O.T.R. premier?

    Bad break for Molina.

BTW, if Melky was playing, that would be 5 switch-hitters in the lineup. Probably not a record, but impressive nonetheless.

    ————————————————————

Close. The mid-’60s Dodgers had a regular all switch hitting infield.

  680. John_Halfz

Melky could definitely learn a thing or two from Brett’s plate approach.

    mark -

I’m not talking about flipping a switch. I’m talking about a matter of familiarity, that’s all. Like you might call someone a nickname if you knew them, but in a work situation you would not.

I’m not talking about game-playing or anything like that. Amongst ourselves, “girls” is not derogatory or demeaning – it’s rather neutral.

I also don’t condone people (women) who will chastise a man who calls them “girl” when it’s obvious no offense was meant.

  682. Carl

Looks like we have some new rivals.

  683. Pel

Jose Molina: I take a lot of pitches. So far, I’ve taken about 60 pitches from A.J. tonight.

  684. jennifer

AJ is not getting pitches on the corner.

  685. CENTRAL CT YANKEE

    Pete,

he could be pitching better if he didn’t walk a guy just an observation ha ha…

  686. rodney

Is it just me or does that outside curve keep getting squeezed while garza’s has been called more than not?

  687. John_Halfz

Molina saves so many runs defensively that he’s actually about a league average catcher. The more you know.

  688. Dozier

Is Pete ‘Jennifer’? Wouldn’t be surprised after the N*o
    M*aas thing.

  689. Mark

    It’s not just you

  706. Tony in Albany

Burnett has been absolutely everything I was hoping for and so much more. This is the guy we saw every start pitching against us last year – he’s gritty, he doesn’t take shit from anybody, yet he’s calm and collected out there on the mound. His stuff looks downright nasty tonight, and he’s giving this team the pick-up they needed so badly after the stinker last night. It’s hard to feel bad about Wang when CC, AJ, Andy and even Joba have looked so good lately. (btw, I am completely sure Wang will get it fixed – the guy’s never had to face this kind of trouble in his career, but when you’re 46-15 over 2.5 seasons you don’t just forget how to pitch)

  707. jennifer

Kay is such a schmuck. Why is he trying to jinx it.

  708. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint

    AJ @ 63 pitches

  709. Trevor

What the hell Michael? He just jinxed it.

  710. trisha - I am panic proof.

Wow, I don’t know if it was total coincidence but Michael Kay totally respected the “tradition” of not announcing a “you know what” by using the magic words – until the end of the 5th inning, when he announced using the magic words. However the tradition is that it is fine to say it once 5 innings have passed!

    WAY COOL MICHAEL KAY!

I on the other hand still prefer not to say it. That’s just me.

    :D

I am totally living out my fantasy as I get to I root for him both as a Yankee and as a member of my fantasy team!

    WOO HOO!

My gf waited on line while I got some takeout from a nearby Indian restaurant. Good times, good times. What a great movie!

  739. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09!

Swisher is feeling it at the plate right now and it is a welcome sight.

I have absolutely no problems with his demeanor or what happened last night.

Quite honestly I think that we could use a few more like him, really loosens up the atmosphere. It’s a real treat to watch his enthusiasm.

He reminds me of a kid in a candy store.

  740. John_Halfz

By the way, to people who say that Jeter and Teixeira look lost at the plate, Matt Garza is a very nice pitcher. A jerk, but a good pitcher. It’s not like the Yankees play every game against the HS scrubs.

  743. Kaseya

I love nick swisher. A lot. I hope he keeps laughing until guys like jorge catch on. They may also want to watch him hit as he’s currently the only Yankee who doesn’t look baffled by major league pitching.

Speaking of pitching, I hope Wang has wiped the tears from his eyes so he can take a good long look at aj Burnett.

  744. PAT M

    “I don’t believe uttering any specific words will alter a pitcher’s outcome…
    Really, honestly do you?
    What’s all the fuss about?”

Paul, honestly I think I must because I stick to it like glue. Posters here can tell you without question that when someone here says the magic words to break up a no hitter, just about the next pitch thrown elicits a hit. And they can also tell you that when Michael Kay has opened his fat mouth and said the magic words before the 5th inning our pitcher gives up a hit.

Who knows? Baseball players are as superstitious as they come, so why not fans? And hell, we didn’t make up the rules surrounding not saying the magic words, but google it on the internet and you’ll find it everywhere! So someone believes in it.

Maybe if nothing else it makes the you know what last longer.

My favorite thing about one of these potential things is that the murmurs start going through the game of baseball, and people start tuning in. Doesn’t matter who you root for. You know that ESPN will pick it up (and probably try to jinx it…), MLB will cut in, etc. It really is exciting. I know that when I’ve tuned it to watch the late innings any time someone here says something “special” is happening in a game, I get so excited for the pitcher and sit on the edge of my seat, almost not able to breathe!

  782. jennifer

haha players are so far from him.

  795. jennifer

joe mama- You can say that again. All last night he was talking about the old guard and that wasn’t the right thing to do asking for the ball. blah blah blah. Now he goes on spits on superstition. Many ball players are superstitious. they eat the same thing every day etc. Why make fun of people being superstitious?

  796. Rishi

    More from Kim Jones:

The Trop is unbelievably loud tonight. More cowbells than the state of Iowa.

Pregame was interesting. Clearly Wang needs to do what he didn’t in his first start – keep the ball down. He’s been getting encouragement from A.J., who yesterday sent Wang an email in Chinese that read, “preparation for domination.”

A.J. uses a translation feature on his phone. He said Wang is teaching him Chinese, little by little. A.J. has been a really, really good teammate in his short time as a Yankee.

  797. Baseball Fab

He looks incredible, I think the No Hitter is in the bag.

  798. PAT M

AJ all alone in the dugout, at least some traditions live on….

  799. trisha - I am panic proof.

Vince, notice I’m not saying it either. Michael Kay is blithering but he did not say the magic words until after the 5th. So he is well aware of shutting his yap until a certain point. However this is the first time I remember him actually doing it!

I remember watching Carl Everett spoil Mike Mussina’s night and just sitting there and crying. If ever there was a heartbreaking moment, that was it. That was absolutely devastating. I’ve never seen it happen in a more dramatic fashion, ever.

  800. RS

Wow do you believe that? He had a no hitter going now he might not even get a win. The offense has got to pick A.J. up after that great effort.

  845. Jeff NJ

cone is wrong, garza can still lose if he comes back in next inning and gives it up.

  846. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

“If there is ANY team in the majors that can go from a historic night, to a very, very devastating loss, it’s these Yankees.”

We’re not all this idiotic in MN, I promise.

  847. MN John

Sopnas, your LOL’s are more annoying than your screen name. STFU!

  848. panayioti

I think everyone should blame Canada.

  849. Patrick

    “I blame society.”

I blame people named Nick who live in San Francisco.

  850. Brian M

Oh well at least our bullpen……erm, never mind.

  851. RS

    Yeah MOLINA!!

  852. Eric

This is where that first inning comes back to hurt us. Swisher has been great, but his strike out was a HUGE at bat in this game.

  853. Blackdragon905

    wow jose!!!!!

  854. Jeff NJ

nice snap throw Molina! Let’s get them here Yankees!

  855. pat

    Molina frames pitches so well.

    Snap throws too.

  856. Zooboy

    Bummer. But let’s take this!

  857. Paul

    great K there
    hurray Jose
    jorge will hit a hr

Nady stinks, no attempt to throw the runner out, Yeah it was a little deep but at least throw it in, don’t lob it.

    ————————————————————

The goal was to keep the runner on first base, not let him move up hoping to get the runner. Correct play.

  859. jennifer

Okay game is still tied, gotta get a few runs for AJ. Garza is likely done.

  860. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

AJ weathers the storm…nice throw Molina!

    Let’s get some RUNS!!!!!

  861. Carl

    Smirk at that Pena

  862. MN John

Angel, relax buddy, it was a joke. By the way, Minnesota sucks!

  863. Joe from Long Island

Great play by Molina and Tex.

Now, we gotta get the W for AJ.

  864. NongEyeJon

Please take that momentum and turn it into a run. How about a Gardner bunt-single, stolen base, single, run

  865. Rishi

ok – it’s the top of the line up v. JP Howell, right? Doable…

  866. trisha - I am panic proof.

“No no gone – I guess it’s my fault. LOL. Bring in Coke. LOL. We’re gonna lose this one, too.”

    You’re not that powerful. LOL.

Game’s not over yet despite what you wish would happen. LOL.

  867. trisha - I am panic proof.

“No no gone – I guess it’s my fault. LOL. Bring in Coke. LOL. We’re gonna lose this one, too.”

    You’re not that powerful. LOL.

Game’s not over yet despite what you wish would happen. LOL.

  868. Joe Mama

That was an unfortunate turn of events but the Yanks need to get a run here and send AJ out there for the 8th

  869. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Wow, that pick off was impressive.

  870. Paul

    Blame Barack Oblama

  871. RS

Just the Yankees’ luck to have their best pitching performance come on the night of our worst offensive showing.

  872. Corey

Well….You cant complain about Burnett’s 7th inning really. If you were to tell me before this game that he would only give up 2 runs through 7 innings…I’d be more than pleased against this offense.

  873. PAT M

If Nady makes a throw to the plate, the runner from first advances to 2nd, no dp

  874. NongEyeJon

Does Tex bat right-handed tonight? I mean, you don’t take him out, correct?

  875. Nick in SF

Patrick: I blame people named Nick who were reading AJ the LoHud Twitter feed between innings. ;)

  876. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    We score this inning…

    AJ pitches the 8th…

    Mo the 9th…

    We win this thing!

  877. Betsy

I hope that is all for AJ – he pitched such a clutch game, just outstanding. I’m sorry that he may not get the win, but he sure as heck doesn’t deserve a loss. He’s come up HUGE so far for the Yankees – let him end his night with that half inning. I don’t want to see him struggle and maybe get a loss…..

  878. trisha - I am panic proof.

“Sopnas, your LOL’s are more annoying than your screen name. STFU!”

    I’ll say.

  879. RS

Now is the time to win this game. Our top of the order is up, score some runs. Send Burnett in the 8th to face the Rays 7-8-9 hitters, and Mo for the ninth.

  880. RSM

What’s wrong with you people? It’s a jinx if a player talks about a no hitter in progress, not an anouncer. The anouncer would only be jinxing it if he said something to the pitcher himself.

  881. NongEyeJon

    Hugeeee….by Brett.

  882. Vince

This is where Gardner needs to show why he is in the big leagues. Be scrappy, do whatever you can to get on base. Then, make things happen with your speed.

  883. Dee

    love gardner

  884. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint

    Get little G home

  885. Blackdragon905

    big hit by gardner!!!!!

  886. pat

If they can’t score Gardner now, they deserve to lose.

  887. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Yes!!!!

  888. Pel

That is the first time I’ve ever seen Gardner hit to the wall in a regular season game.

  889. Trevor

Gardner showing pop the other way.

  890. Zooboy

    Jeter bunt?

  891. Paul

gutty hit there from the courageous Brett

  892. Pepitone

Aj pitched a great game, win or lose, but the Yankee bats, other than Swish, are just as impotent as last year.

I knew they needed that run in the 7th. Yanks were not going to win this 2-0.

Here’s hoping the bats wake up so we can win this for AJ.

  893. Joe Mama

There we go small ball baby bunt and and get him in

  894. NongEyeJon

    Why isnt he bunting?

  895. DT

“Sopnas, your LOL’s are more annoying than your screen name. STFU!”
    I’ll say.

When Al Gore invented the internet, he didn’t know Sopnas or he would have instituted an IQ minimum for it’s use.

  896. Rishi

i mean c’mon Jeter…let’s do this…you have 4 rings, you are supposed to show up when it counts

  897. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

^^^ isn’t a “buddy”. lol, i think thats kinda like the calling a woman a girl thing.

  898. Vince

C’mon, we need this game. This would be a devastating loss.

  899. MN John

Why are we taking the bunt off?????? NNNNNOOOOOOOO

  900. Run Gardner Run

    Jeter special right there

  901. pat

    Classic Jeterian swing

  902. Blackdragon905

    great job by the captain!!!!

  903. grafxkid

    yeah dj!!

  904. Rishi

oh here we go, get the run in…Burnett more than deserves it

  905. Betsy

Is anyone warming in the pen?

  906. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint

    nice Jetes

  907. Joe Mama

At least that improved the batting average with runners in scoring position

  908. Paul

MY9 scroll at bottom of screen says The biggest loser will not be seen tonight b/c of the yankee game…lol

  909. MN John

    Well, that was interesting

  910. JR

thats my boy :) go Jete

  911. NongEyeJon

Eh, this is the worst possible scenario for Tex with his hand.

  912. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

“Is anyone warming in the pen?”

    Please no…unless it’s Mo…

  913. Paul

didn’t get punched ut on that close pitch…phew

  914. NongEyeJon

    Clutch TEx.

  915. Zooboy

    Nice!

  916. Paul

    woot woot

  917. pat

    It’s Swisher time

  918. Nick in SF

Tomorrow they will show their displeasure with “championship cowbells”. :(

  919. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Tex!!!!!

  920. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

    Please don’t waste this… lol.

Yes, I’ll take a sac fly!

Another run would be good though.

  921. Betsy

If you can’t trust anyone else in the pen, Dynasty, then the Yankees are in trouble. Is AJ at around 112 pitches? Asking for more from him after what he gave tonight would be lunacy……

  922. Betsy

If you can’t trust anyone else in the pen, Dynasty, then the Yankees are in trouble. Is AJ at around 112 pitches? Asking for more from him after what he gave tonight would be lunacy……

  923. MN John

I haven’t been that happy for a sac fly for a long time. Well the 1st inning with Posada’s anyway

  924. RS

Great job by Tex considering his right swing isn’t 100%.

  925. Joe Mama

Great job comming back to get the run there by Tex

  926. Rishi

    Burnett is at 93 pitches

  927. Arod, all the time

Bullpen to blow it. Bank on it.

  928. Rishi

    BTW – GOOOOO MINNY :)

  929. Joe Mama

AJ is at 93 pitches you send him back out for the 8th

  930. Bronx Jeers

Teixeira obviously didn’t get the memo about replicating 2008.

  931. MN John

Have to at least consider letting jeter run here. 2 outs, base hit will score him, if not, oh well.

  932. trisha - I am panic proof.

    AWWWWWW Sopnas. LOL.

Maybe you can find some other kind of Cnoke to make you feel better now that the Yankees have taken back the lead!. LOL.

  933. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Betsy,

I didn’t think his pitch count was that high…

and I don’t trust anyone in that pen except Mo…

  934. Rishi

it’s the 7-8-9 hitters…i say leave AJ in there.

  935. Paul

    argh Jorg…who jinxed him??

  936. trisha - I am panic proof.

I’d like to see AJ come back for one batter at a time with Mo ready to go two if necessary.

    Just sayin’

  937. Jay

It’s been obvious that AJ has been gassed since they showed shots of him sitting hunched over in the dugout with towel in hand between the fifth and sixth innings.

And that’s nothing new. In 2008, here were his splits:

    Pitch ERA WHIP
    1-15 7.31 1.24
    16-30 2.57 0.83
    31-45 2.48 1.41
    46-60 4.18 1.42
    61-75 3.27 1.18
    76-90 3.56 1.38
    91-105 5.66 2.32
    106-120 5.40 1.46

Do you think Girardi is wishing he had a long reliever on the staff last night? If AJ comes out for the 8th, this game may be lost because they didn’t have a long reliever on the staff last night.

  938. Mark

lets go A.J get that win you deserve it

  939. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    AJ must pitch the 8th!

  940. MN John

I think you bring out AJ. We will have to trust someone else in this role, BUT with the tough loss on Sunday, and the blowout yesterday, you want to lock in this win tonight. AJ hiccuped last inning, let him go this one, and Mo in the 9th

  941. Jay

I meant with towel in his lap…

  942. RS

“If you can’t trust anyone else in the pen, Dynasty, then the Yankees are in trouble.”

Completely agree. However, this is an intense game against the defending AL Champs, and our bullpen is coming off two rough games in a row. Burnett’s at 93 pitches, so I think we can squeeze one more inning out of him. TB has the bottom of their order up.

  943. Pepitone

Yanks lead 3-2, do you bring in Mo now/

  944. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Thank you….

  945. Rishi

nice catch, SWISH – and the right BP to run into :)

  946. Vince

I agree. In 2008, we don’t score in the 8th to take a 3-2 lead. It just doesn’t happen.

  947. Jay

I think the days of Mo getting more than three outs are gone forever. But they’re definitely gone for now with him just having come back from an injury.

  948. Betsy

Oh, why did I think he had over 100? Nevermind – I got bad info – thanks!

  949. Rishi

Betsy – Garza was at 113

  950. Joe Mama

I saw Swisher smiling as he made that catch how dare he

  951. Spartan

“Swisher and Mo to close it out.” haha …. nice!

  952. Pel

    >And that’s nothing new. In 2008, here were his splits:

I don’t think those splits are unique when you get into the 90-120 pitch range.

  953. pat

    Cone is big on respect

  954. trisha - I am panic proof.

    BURNETT IS A FLIPPIN HERO!

The guy is gold. And an awesome teammate no question.

  955. Paul

    104 pitches great job AJ

  956. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Great inning by AJ…

There’s our 8th inning solution: Every starter goes 8 innings!

  957. GreenBeret7

Marvelous game by Burnett. Garza was almost as good. Now score two runs and let Rivera close it out.

  958. Pepitone

Yanks lead 3-2 going into the ninth. Do we bring in Mo now, or let Burnett finish?

I vote let him finish. We need the bullpen to rest for tomorrow.

  959. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint

Round of applause to AJ. Well done.

  960. S.o.S.

Crap i leave for a little bit and Burnett blows the no hitter. Blame this one on me fellas. Should have known after the 4th that he would be flirting with one. Next time i wont put on my gloves and fight my kids. This is more important. I mean i picked him to win the CY Young this year.

  961. Giuseppe Franco

Boy, what a stark contrast from last night’s debacle. A very well played game on both sides.

This is what baseball is all about.

  962. Joe Mama

It would be nice to get at least one run here but AJ is done for the night bring in MO

  963. PAT M

    Insurance run needed

  964. Scorpio

    Insurance run please…

  965. Dee

    cano’s stance is open again

  966. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

What’s the difference between pitching from the wind-up and pitching from the stretch?

  967. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09!

Burnett exhibited some real mental toughness with the 1-2-3 inning there. Nice way to put the seventh behind him. Now Girardi can bring in Rivera in the 9th with the lead intact.

That is what we want. :)

  968. Jay

Why the love for Marte? Aside from a very strong 2007 in only 45 innings, he’s been a mediocre relief pitcher since 2004. He hasn’t even been good against lefties since 2007. If the Yankee braintrust can’t figure out why and make the necessary adjustment(s), he’s a wasted roster spot and a liability every time he comes into the game.

  969. Mark

Now lets give Mo some breathing room so he canclose it out for our ACE A.J

  970. Rishi

    NICE Melky

  971. Pepitone

    MELKY!!!!!!

Put him at the top of the order!

  972. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint

    Melky participating too

  973. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Melky v Gardner continues!

  974. GreenBeret7

    PAT M
    April 14th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
    Insurance run needed

    ————————————————————

PAT M, that was vintage a Jim Bouton/David Cone type performance.

  975. Giuseppe Franco

I sure hope Pena knows how to bunt.

  976. MN John

That wasn’t a pretty bunt attempt at all. C’mon kid, gotta kid this down.

  977. Jay

    Pel,

I agree with you that those splits are hardly unique when you get into the 90-120 pitch count range. But tell that to David Cone or Michael (Clueless) Kay.

  978. pat

    Navarro touched that

  979. trisha - I am panic proof.

I’d like to take a commercial break here to mention my pure delight at Beckett getting a 6-game suspension for throwing at Abreu’s head – Abreu, who wouldn’t hurt a damned fly!

Looks like fortune isn’t smiling on RSN right now!

  980. dave

swisher and mo to close it out haha- classic pete abe right there.

  981. pat

    I was wrong

  982. Pepitone

    FIRE MICHAEL KAY!!!

    Please.

  983. Vincent

“The Rays didn’t get the scouting report on Brett Gardner as he is both gritty and gutty.”

    HAHA Good work Pete.

  984. dave

did all these rays fans used to be yankees fans before last season – i dont remember the trop ever having more rays fans than yankee fans.

  985. Rishi

    that Upton kid is irritating…

  986. Betsy

No, he doesn’t know how to bunt.

Interesting that Cone is contrasting Garza to AJ – AJ is now the cool one (as opposed to his younger days) and Garza a bit more emotional. Two times the Yankees needed the man to come through and two times he did – what an effort tonight. Man, I would love to score another run here…….and, again, Pena can’t bunt, lol

  987. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

“Abreu, who wouldn’t hurt a damned fly!”

    Isn’t that the truth.

Hell, he wouldn’t even take on an unarmed wall according to most comments around here last year, lol.

  988. Pepitone

Upton runs down Pena’s fly that no one else would be close to catching.

That’s what speed in the outfield does for you.

  989. jennifer

Should Cano have made it to third?

  990. Vince

Ah! Pena needs to get a bunt down. Why can’t we ever find a utility guy who can do the fundamental things needed? Jeez.

  991. trisha - I am panic proof.

“Hell, he wouldn’t even take on an unarmed wall according to most comments around here last year, lol.”

  992. pat

    It comes down to GG

  993. Joe Mama

That was not pretty you need to get that runner to third

  994. Mark

Well it up to the Gardner

  995. Zooboy

How do you defend guts and grit?

  996. Scorpio

I CANNOT believe that we can’t get Cano HOME….aaargh!!!

  997. Mark

If we loose this game lets all look to that inning

  998. Rishi

    cowbells must DIE

  999. jennifer

I hope all those people ringing the cow bells get carpal tunnel syndrome. I wonder if they could sue the rays for handing out the bells?

  1000. robbie

just wondering why damon is not PH for BG?

  1001. Pel

    GARDNER IS UNBELIEVABLE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111

  1002. Joe Mama

Everytime I watch a game against the Rays I get that SNL more cowbell skit stuck in my head

  1003. Rishi

    BRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  1004. jennifer

  1015. JR

  1016. randy l.

the yankee minor league system just does not send players up who can bunt.

  1017. dave

yankees offense right now = swisher and gardner. Who woulda thunk?

  1018. Zooboy

There’s my answer: you neither defend gutty, nor gritty.

  1019. trisha - I am panic proof.

“If we loose this game lets all look to that inning”

Good thing we won’t have to worry about that, hey?

Nice of Gardner to make sure Melky couldn’t score!

    :D

brett gardner saying look at me

  1022. Vince

    Wooohhoooo! Nice Brett. Good job.

  1023. M1kew

Great at-bat for Gardner!!! He fouled off pitches until he got one he could drive and drive it he did. This man is growing before our eyes.

  1024. dave

how in the world is upton mad that the ball bounced over the wall? Did he actually think he could throw out the lead run? More likely that the ball bouncing the wall saved them a run.

  1025. S.o.S.

What are the rays thinking? Playing shallow against our biggest power hitter of the preseason? Must have not gotten the memo.

  1026. Pepitone

What a great job of hitting by Gardner! Last year, he would have struck out on 3 pitches. This year he hangs in there after getting behind 0-2, fouls off a few balls, then shoots a rope over the head of Upton “Road Runner.”

Vince, you are right, Pena has got to get that bunt down. I thought Girardi was going to stress the fundamentals this year.

  1027. Nick in SF

Garner has now *bounced* a hit over the wall, but when will he get one over on the fly????

  1028. Luigi

come on jeter break their back

  1029. Jay

I wonder how long it’s going to take for the Yankee haters who made Ellsbury out to be the second coming of Willie Mays and Gardner to be a Class C prospect to acknowledge that Gardner is at least a comparable player to Ellsbury.

  1030. Rishi

if upton was playing further back he would have caught it

Oh wait, that wasn’t Arod, it was the Captain!

  1049. Joe Mama

  1053. GreenBeret7

And Jeter just shafted his old friend Rivera and cost him a save.

Great job tonight from the top of the order.

  1054. MN John

Ya know, I hate that rule. I know it’s the discretion of the umpire wether they “feel” he would score on the ground rule, but he obviously would have. Why not score him thre?Well, Jeter hits one out, so it doesn’t much matter, but I still hate that ruling.

  1055. Jay

With a five run lead, do you think Swisher is available to pitch on back to back nights? :)

  1056. ARX

Thank you Derek. And that should ice it :)

  1057. Rishi

    So now Mo can’t get a save…i’m sure he’ll deal :)

  1058. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Swisher pitched the 9th?

  1059. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09!

Just maybe the 9th inning strategy has changed now, thanks to the Captain. Excellent!

  1060. pat

    Do we see Mo?

  1061. Pepitone

Do you still send Mo in? 7-2 is not a save situation.

I say, send in Swisher, he needs the work.

  1062. S.o.S.

“how in the world is upton mad that the ball bounced over the wall? Did he actually think he could throw out the lead run? More likely that the ball bouncing the wall saved them a run.”

I think he thought he should have caught it.

  1063. jint51

    nice bounce back win tonight

  1064. Joe from Long Island

What’s especially nice about this little rally, is that the big hits by Gardner and Derek is that they were both with 2 out – something they had problems with all last year.

  1065. trisha - I am panic proof.

I give the game over to Marte now.

  1066. Joey

The game is on MY9, that means no postgame coverage aside from Girardi’s interview

We don’t get to here AJ after his awesome game :(

  1067. dave

IF UPTON was playing further back, he wouldnt catch almost every ball to the outfield.

    ROFL @ JAY

  1069. Tseng

Damn Jeter, padding his stats when we already have the lead.

  1070. CB

I know Jeter hasn’t been hitting the ball well the past few games but this year already we’ve seen Jeter drive the ball in ways he just couldn’t last year after getting hit in the hand by Cabrera.

He hit that ball with authority the other way. Very nice to see him have the game he has had tonight.

I wonder how long it’s going to take for the Yankee haters who made Ellsbury out to be the second coming of Willie Mays and Gardner to be a Class C prospect to acknowledge that Gardner is at least a comparable player to Ellsbury.
    ==============================
Gardner’s having a great game at the plate, but Ellsbury is a much better outfielder. No comparison in the “getting a jump” department.

Poor Jeter, looks lost at the plate.

I admit, since I’m giving someone else a hard time, that Gardner had a nice AB. But why was Upton playing at little league depth?

  1075. Big Joe

Mo still gets a save opp, because bruney is in

  1076. dave

SOS – YOUR probably right but the guy cant catch every single fly ball. If he plays shallow enough to eliminate almost every blooper, he is sacrificing the balls that hit close to the wall. He does play too shallow i think.

  1077. Carl

Burnett was great today. We are gonna see more of these types of games :)

It’s not up to the discretion of the umpire. If a ball bounces over the wall it’s a grounds rule double and baserunners advance two bases. Fan interference however, is umpire’s discretion. If a fan reaches over and touches the ball, the umpire can use his judgment about whetehr a run would have scored or not.

By the way, I can’t say enough about Girardi’s managing, overall. The guy is pure energy and plays musical chairs with players at will, but with smarts behind it. I like it so much more than the predictable Torrean march of the zombies.

  1084. RalphieD

gardner has bought some slack with his huge game today…hopefully some people on here can stop saying he is a AAA player at best, at least for a few days!!!

    ————————————————————

Exactly. Same type of power fastball and big power curve. Burnett has a much smoother delivery. Bouton’s delivery had to have cost him dearly, though. What a four man rotation, though. Ford, Stottlemyre, Bouton and Downing. Two lefties, two righties, two finesse pitchers and two power pitchers.

  1099. Nick in SF

  1115. Blackdragon905

Big, big win tonight. Burnett, the stopper, just pitches a gem, and the offense has some timely clutch hitting to open the game wide open, couldn’t ask for anything else.

  1116. GreenBeret7

For those not counting Bruney strikes out the side on 10 pitches against 3 outstanding hitters.

  1117. Rob NY

pete I know you don’t need an “atta boy” post but the updates are hilarious tonight. “gardner is the new swisher only grittier and guttier.” gold jerry, gold!

AJ is gunna win 20 games this year, he has taken the next step we talked about this winter. Bruney looking SHARP.

    Oh, and employment law sucks.

  1118. Betsy

And this is why you can’t judge teams based on one game – pitching, pitching, pitching.

Unbelievably great performance from AJ, offense looked good and Bruney looked dominant. Wow……..I’m on cloud 9.

  1119. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09!

Great ending by Bruney to strike out all three batters. A sweet victory tonight and the bounce back performance that the team needed.

This kind of performance is what A.J. Burnett can bring to the table. You can’t teach the talent that this guy has.

    This win feels good. :)

  1120. TJ

Sure looks like Swisher,Gardner and Cabrera are showing up whenever they get in the lineup.
    Stay healthy AJ!

  1121. CB

This staff has the chance to be something special once Wang gets straightened out.

Think about it – your #2 starter is just horrible two times through the rotation – burns out the pen and you bring AJ Burnett to the mound and he’s just unbelievable.

AJ threw around 40% curve balls tonight and threw the pitch for strikes 57% of the time.

If AJ does that just go home because you’re not hitting him. If AJ throws his curve for strikes more than 40% of the time he’s extremely difficult to beat. Over 50% – he’s gong to be coming close to no hitting the other team.

What an asset to have him when he’s throwing this way.

  1122. Zodiac

Ch. 9? Does that mean we get to here Russ Salzburg and Joel Sherman? Ugh

  1123. Pepitone

Yeah, but not good enough to take out the 64 Cardinals, unfortunately. Downing actually stunk in that series, and Whitey was too old, and too hurt, to do any good. At least we took em to 7 games.

  1127. dave

upton crawford and langoria – 10 pitches, 3 k’s – only brian bruney!!

  1128. Joe Mama

It’s amazing how the team can look so horrible one day and really solid the next. Hopefully Wang will figure out his problems against Cleveland but they better have a long man up for that series

  1129. Jeff NJ

Bruney was throwing gas. He has established himself as the best pitcher in the pen right now not named Mariano.

  1130. Joe from Long Island

Tampa needs to re-do that scouting report that says Brett can’t drive the ball. They got burned twice on that.

  1131. no.27

I was against the Yankees signing Burnett to such a big deal, especially when I thought it would mean they couldn’t get Teixeira. He’s doing his best to make me look like a really happy idiot. That was exactly what the Yankees needed.

He was the guy I was most worried about in the rotation, but getting off to a good start is going to make things really easy for him. I’m going to the game on Sunday and I can’t wait to see him pitch in person.

Between Wang needing to get it together and A-Rod coming back, this team can still be a lot better. The games the Yankees have lost have been 3 bad starts by CC and Wang and a lead blown in the 8th inning.

  1132. lil' m

Mad love for AJ, my Captain, and everyone else who made this victory possible. Honorable mention to the increasingly awesome BJ Upton.

  1133. EnterSandman

FYI–Kruk vehemently argued against the Beckett suspension a few minutes ago on Baseball Tonight. (I’m sure everyone is shocked.) But he did say Beckett should have been ejected, and since that was in the first inning, I’m not sure how much difference there would be. In fact, that probably would have been even worse for Boston as they wouldn’t have been able to prepare for the missed start.

More importantly than all that–great win for the Yankees tonight. I think we’ll be enjoying many games like this throughout the season.

  1134. randy l.

after aj’s pitching,my highlight of the game was swisher taking garza’s high inside heat without even looking at garza and then taking him deep again without looking at him.

    yankee swagger is coming back.

They got them into the WS when nobody gave them a chance against Baltimore and Chicago. Ford’s circulation issues in his arm had already started and Bouton was spectacular in game three. Stottlemyre was a rookie and had to duel Bob Gibson in 3 games, fighting him to a draw. Downing was just flat out worn down. He exerted a lot of effort and was smaller than Ford. They still almost pulled it out.

Larkin, Williams and Ripken on MLB Network just said Beckett shouldn’t have been suspended either. All the “experts” seem to be in agreement on this.

Does Swisher get a standing O during his first home AB?

  1144. CB

    “yankee swagger is coming back.”

Good pitching will do that. If AJ pitches like this – nevermind against one of your chief rivals in the AL East in their home park – it’s going to cover up a lot of defects on this team.

Not too many difficult plays for the defense to make tonight.

This is one of the main reasons they went after AJ so strongly. His track record against AL east teams is hard to believe.

Walks into tampa after they score 15 and just completely makes them look silly.

    That’ll add some swagger.

  1145. Jay

Thanks, Carl. I’ll be here all week… (Actually not.)

Despite the win, though, can we all agree that the Yankees need a long reliever on staff?

And a question. Did Bruney always top out at 91-92? I thought he used to throw gas…

  1146. jennifer

pat- I wonder what they would have said last year when Joba was suspended.

Funny how different the articles are when it is a sox as opposed to a yankee. Look at the poll question.

1147. NO HYPE (Swisher for Cy Young)

    Awesome game

  1148. Trevor

I have to eat crow. I was against the Burnett signing. He’s proving so far he’s not another Carl Pavano/signing.

  1149. Freddy K

    The MY9 postgame sucks

This was the best game of the year and we don’t even get indepth coverage of it. Guess we just have to read quotes in tomorrow’s papers… sigh.

  1150. Mark in Tampa

Wow, the Yankees made the Rays look slow and unathletic! :)

Of course, doesn’t everybody look that way when the opposing pitcher isn’t letting anybody get on base?

  1151. jennifer

Swisher will most def get a standing O.

  1152. Jay

    Joe Mama,

You said you’re surprised the Yankees can look so putrid one day and so good the next.

I think it’s like the old saying — momentum is the next day’s starting pitcher.

  1153. Joe from Long Island

If that had been CC or AJ who threw at a batter once time had been called, the talking heads would be calling for his head.

I hate to sound paranoid, but we all know it.

  1154. PAT M

CB, I’ll say again, your Schilling comparison back in Novemeber was right on the screws…..Love that arm

  1156. Mark in Tampa

  1160. Josh

“The Rays didn’t get the scouting report on Brett Gardner as he is both gritty and gutty. Huge leadoff double there.” Pete is hilarious

  1161. trisha - I am panic proof.

“Despite the win, though, can we all agree that the Yankees need a long reliever on staff?”

Made that very observation as soon as it was announced that the Yanks were breaking camp without one.

Nady has hurt his elbow….the same one he had TJ surgery on. Not good. Although it may be scar tissue irritation.

  1165. Joe Mama

  1166. Jay

Mark in Tampa and Joe Mama,

I’ve rewound the DVR and I’m looking at the speed shown on the My9 coverage now.

I’ll let you know what it said as soon as I’m done…

  1167. Jay

Mark in Tampa and Joe Mama,

As promised, I watched every one of Bruney’s pitches. (Of course, there weren’t many.)

But the fastest speed Bruney hit in his inning of work, according to the My9 speed gun coverage was 92 — with most of his fastballs coming in at 91 and his last one at 90.

  1168. Jay

Please confirm for yourself on YES replay.

Did MLB Extra Innings or other coverage show a faster speed for Bruney’s pitches?

  1169. Ro-bin-son (Jon R)

All I know is that the YES cameras have been funky for a while, like I have been seeing fastballs that have been registering at 60 mph, I wouldn’t be surprised if the My9 radars for some reason were iffy too.

  1170. Jay

    Ro-bin-son (jonR),

I don’t have any reason to believe the My9 speed reading was accurate. I just was surprised that Bruney was (apparently) topping out at a very mediocre speed versus what I thought he had been topping out at. The fact that he was blowing people away would further suggest that the My9 speed reading was off for that matter, too.

Could anybody =report what the speeds were shown as being for Bruney on MLB Extra Innings or any other coverage that there may have been?

  1171. joeman

I came across this in a Det paper that Marcus Thames is on the trading block,is he worth going after to play CF & add depth to the OF position…given a chance the guy can lumber
