Game 8: Yankees at Rays
YANKEES (3-4)
Gardner CF
Jeter SS
Teixeira 1B
Swisher LF
Posada DH
Cano 2B
Nady RF
Pena 3B
Molina C
Pitching tonight: RHP A.J. Burnett (1-0, 3.38)
RAYS (4-3)
Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Pena 1B
Burrell DH
Navarro C
Zobrist RF
Iwamura 2B
Bartlett SS
Pitching tonight: RHP Matt Garza (1-0, 1.29)
A.J.Burnett vs. the Tampa Bay hitters.
Matt Garza vs. the New York hitters.
GOOD THING THEY HAVE A ROOF: It is pouring here in St. Pete and the wild is howling. Alex Rodriguez did not work out (at least outside) today at the minor-league complex in Tampa.
A.J. VS. THE RAYS: Burnett is 7-4, 2.98 in 16 career starts against the Rays. He is 2-2, 2.30 in seven starts at Tropicana Field.
CAPTAIN NEEDS A KNOCK: Derek Jeter is 1 of his last 20 and is hitting .207.
FRONTRUNNERS: The game is sold out tonight, making it 12 straight home game for the Rays. That counts the postseason.
RED HOT: Evan Longoria has 12 RBI and has hit safely in all seven games.
Back with more later.
UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Heard from a friend that Nick Swisher is getting killed on the radio back in NYC for the crime of smiling while on the mound last night.
I predicted this last night. The Yankees Morality Police love to hammer non-issues like this. The Yankees have much bigger issues than a player smiling.
UPDATE, 4:05 p.m.: Dave Eiland just said Wang had great stuff in the bullpen before the game last night. His point was that Wang is healthy and needs to take it into the game.
UPDATE, 4:42 p.m.: Wang is meeting now with Joe Girardi and Dave Eiland. I would assume this is a pep talk. … A-Rod worked out inside today at Steinbrenner Field.
UPDATE, 5:23 p.m.: Damon is out with the flu.
UPDATE, 6:04 p.m.: Here is Dave Eiland talking about Chien-Ming Wang:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
UPDATE, 6:28 p.m.: Damon said he planned to play tomorrow. “I’m under the weather,” he said. “I haven’t had great sleep lately. It’s probably just caught up to me. … I’m very weak right now. Everything is creaky right now and nothing really feels good.”
UPDATE, 6:44 p.m.: Today is the anniversary of the Yankees using a black player, Elston Howard, for the first time.
UPDATE, 7:10 p.m.: We’re underway at the Trop. Enjoy the game.
UPDATE, 7:25 p.m.: Bases loaded and no outs and the Yankees scored only one run. Very inefficient.
UPDATE, 8:13 p.m.: It’s Nick Swisher’s world and we’re all just living in it. He just homered deep into the seats in right-center field. 2-0 Yankees.
Swish has four homers and 11 RBI in eight games. Only Evan Longoria (5 homers, 12 RBI) is hotter. Swisher also has scored 10 runs and has 27 total bases.
UPDATE, 8:24 p.m.: Evan Longoria just wet his pants facing Burnett. A 1-2 pitch was high (but over the plate) and Longoria hit the dirt. Burnett then fanned him looking with a heater right over the middle.
A.J. through 4 innings: 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts. He could not be pitching any better than he has so far.
UPDATE, 8:40 p.m.: A.J. Burnett looks frighteningly good tonight. 5 0 0 0 1 6. 67 pitches / 37 strikes.
UPDATE, 8:47 p.m: Seriously, they only had to give up Wilson Betemit to get Nick Swisher? Wilson Betemit? Not Woodrow Wilson, Enrique Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Willie Wilson, Wilson Phillips, Flip Wilson, Mookie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Mr. Wilson from Dennis The Menace, and Wilson the volleyball from Castaway too?
Just Wilson Betemit? Holy cow.
UPDATE, 9:02 p.m.: Burnett has 77 pitches through six innings. Question now becomes whether he gets tired over the last three innings. But he’s probably good for 110-115 or so. Can he get nine outs in 40 pitches or so? I don’t see why not.
Meanwhile, and I understand this is a secondary issue, he is saving the bullpen after last night’s disaster.
If he gives up a hit in the seventh, then you have Swisher and Mo to close it out.
UPDATE, 9:15 p.m.: OK, now they have to worry about winning the game. It’s only 2-0 and Garza has been pretty darn good, too.
UPDATE, 9:27 p.m.: The Rays didn’t get the scouting report on Brett Gardner as he is both gritty and gutty. Huge leadoff double there.
Now Jeter needs to get him to third.
UPDATE, 9:53 p.m.: Is there a better athlete in baseball than B.J. Upton? He makes those catches look easy.
Here’s a question for you, does Girardi have it in him to use Pena at SS in the ninth inning?
UPDATE, 9:58 p.m.: Brett Gardner is the new Nick Swisher. Only grittier and guttier.
Great night for GGBG. 3 for 5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored so far.

any roster moves?
Yeah who got called up, you slob?
For the love of god hopefully I can at least watch this game!!! Shut off last nights in the 2nd, couldn’t bare to watch anymore of it.
If swisher is in the lineup u think he will get hit?
Andy:
Are you seriously calling Pete a slob?
Very intresting to see who the will send down they have to send some one no ? if its a 40 man move well we knoo the person will be here for a while …..cant wait to see the line upp wonder if he will bench matsui and play swisher in right and let nady dh ….is it me or does nady seem to never get a big ..hit he is like homerun double or nuttiin always a lil ground ball to 3rd double play ..he doesent run well he doesent play the feild well his hitting isnt no better than melkey other than the once in a while double or hr other than that he sucks to me …melkey had 2 knocks yesterday lmaoo
I love the sound of this:
Teixeira 1B
Swisher LF
Posada DH
Cano 2B
Nady RF
Tex!
Posada not catching? Who catches tomorrow?
“Andy S.

Yeah who got called up, you slob?”
Way to show your intelligence!
It’s horrendous down here…
So no Ransom today. Interesting…..
Why no Damon?
Damon and Matsui out of the lineup against a righty?
Molina, Pena, Nady at the bottom of the lineup?
Ouch. Looks like AJ is on his own today
the shuffling of the lineup continues, at least Matsui is benched, he needs to get his legs back…and Nady got robbed by Upton yesterday….maybe he gets it going, I’ll be at the game tonight, hoping for a better outcome
More surprises! El Nino starting at 3B!
Tex is back and a Pena sighting!! Woohoo!!!
Yes! Pena in.
yeah surprised Damon is out of the lineup
So Pena is at third base. Any chance he gets more games there if he shows us something today? Not like Ransom is a hard man to replace these days.
from previous thread
As most of you know im not a stat geek. But if memory serve me correctly. In the past several years. Everytime the Yanks have been blown out/humiliated. They have comeback strong the next game with a win and at times started a long winning streak. Today is no different.
I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.
I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.
“GOOD THING THEY HAVE A ROOF:”
I know I’m in the minority here, but I really thought that the Yankees should have built the new stadium with a retractable roof. It would have jacked up the cost tremendously, but it would have been worth it IMO.
You guys hear Beckett was suspended for 6 games: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb
I guess a day off to rest Damon’s legs. Matsui needed to sit and Nady’s at bats looked better yesterday. Swish has to play so to get Swish and Nady in the lineup Damon has to sit. Makes sense.
It’s the dawning of the new Pena era! Exciting!
Damon is going to be ticked… his 2nd off-day in the last 3 days.
The media should go to Damon and get some quotes, he is not going to be happy at all
hmm no damon?
Glad to see Teixeira in the lineup today.

Thanks!!! – That was great. I remember it from the 60′s. I guess it had staying power – much like the licorice between the teeth. Ew.
“I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.”
Just April?
Damon injured yesterday. that’s why
hey Andy….why don’t you find out the info for yourself instead of ripping Pete?
One last thing….drop dead. If you can accomplish that simple request, we would have one less punk posting on the blog. That’s a positive for everybody.
Molina and Posada in the same lineup? That’s dangerous – what happens if something happens to either of them?
Damon is injured?

Yeah… I’m sure Jeter or Teixeria wouldn’t laugh on the mound if he was asked to pitch, because it’s so normal for position players to pitch to ML hitters.
I knew people would start picking on Swisher. His personality really is not conducive to the hollier than thou attitude that the NY media/fans carry.
We finally get a fun loving guy and someone to loosen the clubhouse and people want him to turn into a Robot like Posada.
where did u get damon injured yesterday ??? and if he is not injured wtf is he doing on the bench
Gonna be nice to have someone who knows how to call a game behind the plate.
“I know I’m in the minority here, but I really thought that the Yankees should have built the new stadium with a retractable roof.”
Im with you on this one Laura. At least a half retractable roof for the infield on rainy days(prevent the muddy surfaces). But instead they went out and spent all their money on air blowers from behind the plate for Yankees at bats to help the ball sail over the fense. I mean did we really need that type of home field advantage!!!
Of course Damon’s hurt. So much for managing his time. Injuries happen, doesn’t matter how smart girardi is with his use of the bench.
As for swishergate, I hope posada, et al lighten up. They’ve needed to for five years now.
“Molina and Posada in the same lineup? That’s dangerous – what happens if something happens to either of them?”
Then Swisher catches. LOL! Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Girardi is clearly placing a premium on defense. And after watching yesterday’s game, I can’t say I blame him.

I respectfully disagree, even w/ some rainouts, there is nothing like outdoor baseball in my opinion, the retractable roof ballparks, while nice(Houston’s looks great), to me feel more like a ‘building’ than a ballpark….I think the traditional teams should just stick to pure open ballparks; but I think it’s great for the newer franchises
Hoo boy. Gardner at the top of the lineup…how much rope does this kid have? Obviously the speed is there but whether or not he has an ML bat is still in question. Same deal with Melky, and I sure hope that A-Jax is as advertised. This team can’t live without a CF who can hit and is still ruing the day they passed on Carlos Beltran.
I think the team will be loose and ready to go, having surrendered the yogurt on yesterday’s drubbing. They are professionals and the return of Tex will energize the lineup. Love batting Swisher behind Tex so he will get pitches to hit…
LET’S GO YANKEES, and no matter what we’re up on the Red Sox
“Molina and Posada in the same lineup? That’s dangerous – what happens if something happens to either of them?”
Swish will catch …
) …
Go Yankees 2009 !!!
I assume Posada’s not catching tonight because of the monster last night.
Damon and Matsui are probably getting rest on the turf-especially since Damon was in the field so much last night.
Damon is 1-10 career vs Garza.
Matsui is 0-4 with 2k’s and those at bats likely occurred when Matsui could actually hit.
You’re most welcome, Doreen. Love those things, myself. The pink and white ones. The watermelon and other flavors don’t get it done.
“I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.”
You have to excuse some of the cliff jumpers. They had to wait an extra month to watch Yankees baseball being that we didnt have any games last October. So in some ledge people. Its October now.
Who is the emergency catcher? Ransom?
Of course he’s injured, why wouldn’t you put your best non injured team forward?
After Ransom got his hit and RBI, today was a good day to give him off, enjoy it and finally relax again.
Damon: 1-10 career vs. Garza
“I respectfully disagree, even w/ some rainouts, there is nothing like outdoor baseball in my opinion, the retractable roof ballparks, while nice(Houston’s looks great), to me feel more like a ‘building’ than a ballpark….I think the traditional teams should just stick to pure open ballparks; but I think it’s great for the newer franchises”
I understand. I know my opinion is not one held by many (although S.o.S. agrees with me). I think that one day, architects will be able to build these stadiums with retractable roofs and still have them maintain that baseball stadium feel to them. It may be a long ways away, but it’s coming.
The Rays ABUSED Posada last night. Not surprising that Molina is in there. AJ isn’t particularly good holding runners either. Love the move. Posada and Andy work well and will be paired tomorrow.
And Pena should save some hits too. Love Joe getting some good D in there.
Surprised Damon’s not in the line-up. Maybe he’s battling a bit of an injury or just giving him a blow on the turf???? No matter what though, Swish had to be in the line-up. Can’t sit a guy when he’s as hot as he is. I like that Pena is getting a look. At least give Ransom a break to clear his head. He did finally get a base knock last night, so maybe he can take that positive and build on it.
So with Swisher batting cleanup and already hitting 3rd in a lineup is that an admission by Girardi that Swish is a better hitter in his eyes than Nady who he consistently bats below Swisher?
Which leads me to this point? If Swisher is a hitter Girardi bats in higher spots than Nady, then is Nady the full time RF when everyone is healthy?
Just seems odd that the guy he awarded RF to over Swisher can’t bat higher than Swisher in the order.
is damon definitely hurt?
he’s not hitting right now, and considering the way the rays run on posada, it makes sense to play molina. swisher has to play. that leaves 2 spots (lf and dh) for posada, nady, and damon. i’d go posada and nady based on present at bats. if damon doesn’t like it, he should start hitting.
Molina, Pena, Nady & Gardner in that order..throw in Jeter at this time & OUCH !!!!!!!! looks like another long night
To ease some of your fears….
Check out these Red Sox stats so far this year. You think these guys are getting pulled, sent down, or traded? It may be something to ponder before flying off the handle about a Yankee not performing up to par thus far.
Lowell .154 avg 1 run 4rbi
Pedroia .179 avg 1rbi in 28 ABs
Elsbury .200 avg 0rbi in 25 ABs
Ortiz .208 avg 3rbi 5 total bases (I think he’s done. DONE)
Drew .150 avg 2rbi
Lowrie .058 avg 1 total base ONE!
Sox have the 2nd fewest runs scored in the entire AL and 3rd lowest in all of baseball.
Some pitching gems for you…
Okajima 13.50 era in 3 appearances
Lester 9.00 era in 2 starts
These stats are just to show its been one week of baseball. And if you want to put a lot of stock in that, the Sox are in much worse position than the Yanks.
The only guy who is killing Swisher is Kay
Francessa actually likes Swisher, said theres nothing you can do when the game is 15-5, you can’t bury your head in the sand.

They didn’t abuse Posada. Wang allowed them to run. They were moving while he was still in his stretch.
1. Pretty weird that Damon isn’t in the lineup again. He isn’t that fragile..
2. Glad to see Tex is back.
3. Pena over Ransom makes me happy.
4. Anyone that knocks Swisher for having fun while playing a game should relax. This is one of the things I really hate about some Yankee fans; a lot of them take the game way too seriously. The whole point of playing baseball is to have fun. Lighten up!
If i werent from NY i really would hate…. people just love to hear themselves talk and will make an issue out of everything.
This swisher smiling stuff is nonsense… its baseball, its a GAME… not a war.
In his second start as in Pinstripes, and AJ will get the chance to play the role of a stopper…..Glad he’s a Yankee as oppossed to Derek Lowe who was the favorite here back in Novemeber….Thanks CB….

Who is the emergency catcher? Ransom?”
$20 says it’s Swisher
Guy
The only time I remember Gardner leading off this year he singled, stole second, went to 3rd on a grounder and scored on a pitch that didn’t get that far away from the catcher.
People have got to give players a chance. It is mid-April!
GB,
The other day you posted a player that had a career batting average of a 1000.
I think we should include Swish to that list of perfection. O runs allowed. Has there ever been a player to not allow a run in his short baseball career?
Melancon just threw another perfect inning for Scranton and added two more strikeouts.
UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Heard from a friend that Nick Swisher is getting killed on the radio back in NYC for the crime of smiling while on the mound last night.
I predicted this last night. The Yankees Morality Police love to hammer non-issues like this. The Yankees have way bigger issues than a player smiling.
Yep, Pete it’s sad. The fans clamor for a normal team with great personalities and not a corporate feel to it, and now they have a guy who keeps things loose and they want him to act like a wall-street trader. Can’t win with the fickle NY fans.
I also think Molina catching might have something to do with Burnett pitching.
It worked well last time and I can see it becoming a consistent thing this year, similar to Moose and Molina last year.
This lines up Posada to catch Pettitte tomorrow and the home opener on Thursday. Its no issue because they are both day games.
“The only guy who is killing Swisher is Kay”
Does Michael Kay serve any purpose in this world beyond pissing me off? He is completely useless. In fact, he should probably just jump off a cliff if he is so miserable that he cannot bear to have anyone enjoy the GAME of baseball.
they better get a lot of hits from these guys otherwise bed early again

The fruity ones are Mike-n-Ike’s, I think. I agree – I don’t like those either.
Is Damon injured or is that just speculation?
There is so much speculation, so much fretting, so much angst going on, and it’s only April. I don’t know about anyone else, but I won’t last 6 more days, much less 6 more months at this rate.
Stuff happens. It’s a 162-game season and much like life in general, on any given day any thing can happen, and sometimes for no reason at all but that it happens. I’m sorry if I’m sounding cranky, but filling out forms online referencing 17-year-old records will do that to a person.
That and too much sugar.
Melancon pitches the 9th inning. 2 strikeouts. 11 pitches, and no, he’s not getting called up unless there’s an injury before June.
Fans ripping Swisher are just another group of dumb Yankee fans. A number that sadly seems to be growing by the day.
It was a blowout April game. Get over it, and get over yourselves.
They put in the first baseman to pitch and he pitched a scoreless inning with a K.
Sorry but, that’s hysterical.
Thank God the players are not as uptight as some of the fans.
The funny things is that Kay would never tell Swisher to his face that what he thinks about what he did last night and certainly would not put it in the terms that he is today.
Typical Kay does one thing on his radio show and other when calling Yankee games that is why I cannot take him seriously in either role.
Melancon sits down the side in the bottom of the 10th. 11 pitches.
Swisher pitching the 8th was the best part of the game. What a character. I think he will be good for the clubhouse……….

I was wondering who exactly was killing Swisher. Kay was killing him last night, too. It’s not surprising. Maybe he has nothing better to talk about.
I doubt that Damon is hurt. Girardi likes to rest Damon on the turf. He doesn’t want him playing 3 straight games on it. Go back to last year and I bet you’ll find he rested him then too.
Man, when did NYY fans turn into these fragile beings? One thing out of whack and people are ready to slit their wrists. These last 8 years w/o a title is really taking a toll on people.
I went 1979-1995 w/o a title and managed to survive. It can be done.
Finally! Some justice for that punk Beckett.

these games mean the same now as they do in the middle of the year or at the end…
Posada started it with his dumb comments about how it wasn’t funny and no one was laughing. Kay and co are just echoing what he said.
Just like Santana said Murphy cost us the game. Even if he didn’t mean it like that, it comes off like you’re throwing someone under the bus.
Posada needs to calm down and get off his high horse.

giuseppe – can’t wait til that kid is locking down the 8th before may is out. also, anyone see d-rob yesterday? 3 IP, zeroes, 7 k’s. he’s not the answer for tonight because of the 3 IP yesterday, but at some point soon you have to figure he’s pushing coke and/or albaladejo as well.
Hey PAT M! Good to see you posting. I asked about you a few nights ago but no one responded. Hope you’re recovering nicely from your surgery.
I say AJ is lights out tonight. Yanks at +102 on my square book, +107 for the sharpies.
Kay is an idiot, I actually turned off YES when the score was 15-2 so I missed the Swisher the pitcher scene but I can only imagine Kay’s annoying hysterics.
Those killing Swisher for smiling need to take a long, hard look at their own priorities.
And guys, Damon’s not hurt. Bad numbers against Garza + turf on 35+ legs = good night to give a player a rest.
Anyway, it lets Joe G keep Swish, Nady and Teixxeira in the line up-all of whom are currently performing better.
Swisher’s strikeout of Kapler can be seen on the Yes network site, in case you missed it.
http://web.yesnetwork.com/index.jsp
Still a good post miggs. I wonder if they have the depth in the minor leagues to deal with the slow start of some aging players. Also, If we are panicking about Wang. What are the Sox thinking about Lester . He was one of the top 3 lefties in baseball and has a 9 era. Thats not even mentioning the last place standings. As the saying goes. Players in the end of the year end up playing to what the back of their baseball cards numbers show.
The only guy in the media who has made a big deal is Kay
The papers have been pretty quiet (mostly focused on Citi Field) and WFAN hasn’t made a big deal out of it.
Nick’s not getting killed, Micheal Kay is just starting crap.
P.S. wholely OBP % BATMAN !
Jeter

YES PENA IS STARTING AT 3B ! HALLELUJAH !
And Jackson leads off the 10th with a 4 pitch walk and steals 2nd base.
the only one getting his big ole’ head twisted about it is kay.
HOLY *
I could definitely see Robertson and Melancon replacing Albaladejo and Veras at some point this season. The two former guys are tearing up AAA and are better pitchers than the latter.
I still like what Coke, Bruney, Marte and Ramirez bring to the table. Veras and Albaladejo are still good but I could stand to lose them.
The 7th game of the season, getting blown out, and a player tries to lighten the mood a little bit, yeah that is just awful.
If it were late summer and the Yanks were in a pennant race it would be a different story.
Some days it really is getting embarrasing to be a Yankee fan. Way too many ignorant clowns call themselves fans of this team.
‘And Jackson leads off the 10th with a 4 pitch walk and steals 2nd base.’
GB I can’t wait till he gets here in Sept.
Doreen,
I think it’s typical overreaction.
Maybe the Sox should trade Lester & Yanks trade Wang cause back-2-back stinkers is surely a sign of major decline!!!
(sarcasm emphasized)
Berroa doubles and scores Jackson. 1 out in the 10th, Scranton up 4-3.
Melancon pitching well again. Both Robertson & Melancon appear to be too good for AAA.
So no one is being called up or sent down? Are the Yankees banking on Burnett Pettitte going deep?
“Dave Eiland just said Wang had great stuff in the bullpen before the game last night. His point was that Wang is healthy and needs to take it into the game.”
Could it be that Wang has developed a case of “mound fright”? Don’t laugh. That could be it. A lot of sports is mental. He pitches fine when nobody is looking. Once he sees the bright lights, he loses it. This could possibly be something the Yankees should look in to.
Gardner leading off and playing CF is a joke

GB and Doreen,
Dont forget the raisen nets and those toffee peanuts. Cant watch a movie without those.
Thank God No Matsui… I think he needs a few days off. Watch, the yanks come out swinging tonight and have more pep in the lineup…
Judging by the comments, I think a large majority of commenters on Pete’s blog had no problem with Swisher last night.
Seeing that Nick’s batting cleanup tonight, I don’t think Girardi had a problem with Swisher either.
My guess is it might have offended some element of the Yankee front office, and Jorge (who can be excitable sometimes), and that’s about it.
Jackson walked, stole second, and then scored on a double from Berroa to take a 4-3 lead in the 10th.
Melancon will pitch the Bot 10th and get the win if he nails it down.
When I read on the blog last night that Swisher pitched, I was pissed.
Pissed that I missed it. I watched it on demand on Fios (they have the game on demand for free now) and loved it.
Swisher and his attitude is exactly what fans have missed on this team. The corporate quiet millionaires club sucked the life and fun out of the team.
Now with guys like Joba, Swish, AJ and CC to some extent we’re seeing players who wear their hearts a little on their sleeves and I am THRILLED for that.
I’m personally going to write Cashman a letter of apology for some of the things I’ve said about him in here just for the fact that he turned garbage (Betemit) into Swisher.
I don’t know if Swisher is going to be great the whole year, but his attitude is what is going to help shift this group from a “club” into a “team”.
I have no doubts that when Boston pulls their hitting our best hitters routine that Swisher won’t be heavily involved in the incident to follow somehow.
The fans here have been DYING for a player with his attitude.
Kay should shut it and go back to hawking his co-hosts awful CD’s.
I’ve had the fan on since 1ish and haven’t heard anyone kill him. I think it is Kay who is killing him.
Jeter had no problem with Swisher, he said he was chuckling too. The starters were all on the top step watching him– Joba, CC, AJ, and even Andy.
Hell, even Tony Pena had to hold back laughter if you watched him in the dugout next to Joe.
Posada needs to lighten up. The rest of the team didn’t find it offensive.
Melky playing anywhere for the Yankees is a joke
Is it me or is this stuff really being written during the first week of the season? There is not enough data to make an accurate judgement of how anyone will perform this season. Those that are hot will cool down and those that are cold will probably get better based on their lifetime stats. As for Gardner, the only way to tell if he is a major leaguer is to let him play and find out. Last night was horrible, just as the first two games were, but this team is better than that. Patience is a virtue.
“Does Michael Kay serve any purpose in this world beyond pissing me off?”
patrick-
good point. i already do that so that makes him redundant
AJ walked, stole 2nd and scored on Berroa’s double. 2 outs with Russo at the plate & Berroa in scoring position. Scranton up 4-3.

‘And Jackson leads off the 10th with a 4 pitch walk and steals 2nd base.’
GB I can’t wait till he gets here in Sept.
————————————————————
Yeah, unless Gardner and Cabrera completely collapse, there is no benefit in bringing jackson up until he’s learned all he can as a base runner and hitter in the minors.
Liverpool is cooked in the CL for you Euro futbol fans.
Dang, that Scranton team is kinda good, isn’t it?
Francessa has been very complimentary of Swisher… he likes his personality. Normally it is Francessa who makes a big deal out of this stuff, but not today.
This is a classic example of Michael Kay and his holier than though approach to baseball.
Blow-outs happen and NICK SWISHER was pitching. That alone is funny.
The only person that shouldn’t have been laughing is Wang. Everyone else, have a laugh and get ready for game 8 of 162.
Russo doubles in Berroa for his 4th hit, today.

Man, when did NYY fans turn into these fragile beings? One thing out of whack and people are ready to slit their wrists. These last 8 years w/o a title is really taking a toll on people.
I went 1979-1995 w/o a title and managed to survive. It can be done.
It just hasn’t taken enough of a toll to knock them out of here. And for us old foggies, we also managed to survive from 1963 to 1976.
WooHoo. “Russo delivers witha rousing double!”
Sorry, GB7 probably beat me to the punch, but it bears repeating.
Could it be that Wang has developed a case of “mound fright”? Don’t laugh. That could be it. A lot of sports is mental. He pitches fine when nobody is looking. Once he sees the bright lights, he loses it. This could possibly be something the Yankees should look in to.
————————————–
For God’s sake. The guy hasn’t faced live batters in a real game since June. How many times have you heard pitchers say there’s no substitute for facing live batters? Seriously, does everyone have to over react and panic and diagnose him with physcological diseases because he’s rusty and had 2 bad starts? Sinker ball pitchers more than anyone else need their mechanics perfect to be succesful. His are off, it’s as simple as that. I’m fairly confident he’ll figure it out.
Looks like is it up to AJ and Andy the next 2 days to go atleast 7. Doesn’t look like any moves will be made.
Marte and Rivera are fresh. Veras has pitched 4 of the last 6 days. Bruney has pitched 3 of the last 5 days.
Liverpool losing AT anfield against Chelsea killed them. And to let up three goals? That was an ugly game.
anyone wanna bet that Russo wants the utility player gig?
the Cards want to play Rasmus in CF…lets talk to the Cards about FA to be Rick Ankiel
I think that if Swisher plays solid baseball for the Yankees he is real quickly going to be a fan favorite.
The Liverpool-Chelsea game is pretty entertaining.

Never knew what they were called.
as far as licerice getting in the teeth, just take ‘em out and put them in your pocket.”
GB and Doreen,
Dont forget the raisen nets and those toffee peanuts. Cant watch a movie without those.
————————————————————
Nah….those Raisinettes and and peanuts are kid candy. Only a real adult would eat Good-N-Plentys. Of course you gotta shake the box and make train sounds. You finish the day by eating a “Chuckles” six pack, always leaving the red and black ones for last.
“My guess is it might have offended some element of the Yankee front office, and Jorge (who can be excitable sometimes), and that’s about it.”
I don’t think Jorge was offended, and anyway a good fight in the dugout, ala Carlos Zambrano vs. Michael Barrett didn’t seem to hurt the Cubs.
Just kidding of course! Posada and Swisher’s play have been the two offensive shining lights so far. I’m hoping before the season is over, that the Yankees are so far ahead, that Swisher gets to play every position during a game!
“It just hasn’t taken enough of a toll to knock them out of here. And for us old foggies, we also managed to survive from 1963 to 1976.”
There you have it. Two examples of people who lived through long stretches where the Yankees didn’t win the World Series. What more do you need?
“I think they need to change the definition of overreaction to: see NY Yankees’ fans during the month of April.”
I was so sure that was going to read “they need to change some peoples medication” when I started that sentence.
“AJ walked, stole 2nd and scored on Berroa’s double. 2 outs with Russo at the plate & Berroa in scoring position. Scranton up 4-3.”
m,
Are you watching the game online?
“Liverpool is cooked in the CL for you Euro futbol fans.”
As Jeter would say is that even a sport Nick? Isnt it put into the same category as Hockey. I think the need to widen the nets and ban the offsides call. 10-8 games would be more entertaining than 2 nill.
Thank’s Nick in SF….I’m also playing the Yanks tonight….I’ll be seeing the Yanks for the first time tonight…..It did seem to me that Giradi might have over managed in the 8th inning in the Joba game as I listened to that game…..Veras and Coke are not Nelson and Stanton….2 outs in the 8th and lose is a tough way to go……I’m certain there was much dialog here about those moves……
and a yankee related post- michael kay bothers me. it’s the same old schtick that half the time has nothing to do with baseball as a game but instead some inside joke that seems to be killed for everybody but him. and Swisher, how can you not like him? I think he’d play any position you asked him to and then give you the shirt off his back when he’s done and still be smiling.
Judging from that Eliand quote, you have to question Wang’s mental makeup.
Giving up 10 runs to the Indians and getting booed off the mound s not what this guy needs. They better be sure he is up to it.
I called Liverpool cooked too soon, they just scored two goals in under 2 minutes. One more needed to tie up the game and win the whole thing on the away goals tiebreaker, right?
no damon, no matsui
Girardi is in love with giving guys days off. I remember this well from last year. EVERYDAY someone needs a day off in his mind

Unfortunately you’ll find even more patience in Dr. Kavorkian’s after-care facility than here. And some here are more brain dead than the ones he’s through with.
Did any of you catch Gammons on baseball tonight make the comment about Swisher and Gabe Kapler? Kruk was saying how Kapler’s teammates will be giving him a hard time for the rest of the season and Gammons jumped in with “If Nick Swisher retires in 10 years with half the respect of Gabe Kapler he will have done very well” (I am paraphrasing)
Its amazing what a curmudgeon Gammons has become…
SoS,
Following it on gameday. Errora on Berroa, man on 2nd, no outs.
For Yankee fans, Swish was the best part of the game last night. He should get a medal not some hack’s lip service.
The move to Pena makes sense as he might as well get some work while he’s here.
Still no matter how good he does I don’t see him staying past ARod’s return.

Struckout the 2nd batter.

Bob, apparently my humor is lost on you. I was trying to be funny, but failed miserably. I’m going to go now and jump off of the Brooklyn Bridge (which will be quite a feat since I’m currently in Chicago).

Who still watches those idiots on Baseball Tonight? If you’re not watching the MLB Network you’re nuts.
I don’t understand what the problem is here. Swisher is a solid player, who happens to be carrying the team offensively now and is a true asset with his position playing flexiblity. He “took one for the team” by pitching last night and was delighted that he got them through the inning without any further damage. It was a joke for him even to be out there. So what that he smiled on the mound. And why is the criticism coming from New York?!?!? (If Tampa came down hard on him, I’d understand it. But New York?) I LOVE the team (always have), but I think Swisher and his honest, fun-loving, good natured outlook on life and the game are a GREAT addition to the team.
the yankees don’t need a retractable roof. they have arrangments for that old guy with the giant red umbrella to stop by the stadium, if needed…
“So with Swisher batting cleanup and already hitting 3rd in a lineup is that an admission by Girardi that Swish is a better hitter in his eyes than Nady who he consistently bats below Swisher?”
yes G.
i think it’s pretty obvious that Swisher has jumped Nady on Girardi’s depth chart.
nothing wrong with that.
Nady looked better in Spring Training, but Girardi isn’t going to sit red-hot Swisher.
Girardi is smart enough to get everyone ABs. and that’s exactly what he has been doing (though he could bat 9 Babe Ruths and 90% of the posts here would be complaints).
Melancon strikes out Mets top hitting prospect Fernando Martinez.
I can understand not putting Damon in center against a team with as much speed as the Rays, but I hope Girardi gives it a try one of these days. Having 3 terrible hitters in a row really takes away from the lineup.
Wow I just put the liverpool game on and I think they need 1 more goal to tie the series? I forget how the scoring works but they lost 3-1 at home so shouldn’t they need to win by 2 on the road?
“I don’t understand what the problem is here. ”
the problem is that the people on sports radio in NY are mouth-breathing idiots.

As is anyone who wastes one minute of their day listening to that garbage.
I’m still laughing @ Swisher House shaking off Molina. I don’t care if anyone else had a problem with it, with the game where it was, may as well have fun playing it.
OK, I’m calling Liverpool cooked again.
I’m an Arsenal fan anyway.
“Its amazing what a curmudgeon Gammons has become…”
Gabe Kapler once played for the Red Sox. therefore, Swisher committed a sin against the game to strike him out.
that’s how Gammons thinks.
Melancon nails it down in the 10th and gets the win. Scranton wins their sixth straight to start the season.
I’d say another good performance for Melancon today:
2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K — 27 pitches, 20 strikes
He has certainly gotten off to a hot start:
5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K
I thought it was supposed to be _hard_ to score goals in soccer?
Melancon ends the game with 2 strikeouts. Only base runner was on a tough error on Berroa at third. (I’m watching on MILBTV.) Final line, 2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 4 strikeouts. 27 pitches, 20 strikes
The media got 2 days out of Alex looking at himself in a mirror and you are begrudging them a day of Swisher laughing?
I would be very surprised if Nick Swisher is not one of the most well liked players in baseball. I dont know if it was visable or mentioned on the TV broadcast but when CC robbed him of his potential 2nd HR of the night/booming double, he tipped his helmet to CC on the way back to the dugout.
He was very friendly with every ray who made it to first base(all of them), and generally looked like an affable dude.
Gabe Kapler is a suspected(known?) steroid user, so I’m not sure what he has done to garner the respect of the rest of baseball.
Don’t know if this is the most current info, but Melancon has faced 18 batters and has 11 strikeouts. Can’t seem to find an ERA for him.
Free Booze: the scoring is by aggregate goals over the two games. Because Chelsea won 3-1 at Anfield, Liverpool would have to win by 2 right now to tie up the aggregate score.
Then the first tiebreaker is away goals. Chelsea got 3 away goals in the first leg, so Liverpool needed 3 away goals today to negate that advantage. They now have 4 away goals, so they would now win that tiebreaker if they could score two more goals to tie up the aggregate. Which means there couldn’t be an overtime period.
But the point looks to be moot.
i think part of the reason he is killing swisher is because if he doesnt all the mets fan will call up and kill him a homer and said if that was a mets doing it he will be calling for his head
i think part of the reason he is killing swisher is because if he doesnt all the mets fan will call up and kill him a homer and said if that was a mets doing it he will be calling for his head
swisher has played 5 years and has been on two 1st place teams, two second place teams, and third place team.
he seems like a guy that fits in well with winning teams. i don’t like clowns , but swisher seems like someone who knows when to turn the fooling around on and off and he seems to get the job done when it matters.
it also doesn’t bother me that posada was in a bad mood about it. a little edginess is not a bad thing on a team.
mel,
he still haven’t allow a run yet.
m: You can’t find Melancon’s ERA because he doesn’t have one. It is 0.00
“The fruity ones are Mike-n-Ike’s, I think. I agree – I don’t like those either.”
the fruity ones are Good n Fruity’s. i have a yankee batting helmet from a give away a long time ago with the Good n Fruity logo on the back.
there were 3 different sponsers i could have ended up with on the back of that helmet, and i end up with Good n Fruity
“Laura, did you see the new regional espn site? espnchicago.com”
Just saw it now. Not really a help to me since I don’t follow Chicago sports. I may live in Chicago, but my heart still bleeds New York.
Yeah Molina didn’t even give any signs and Swish was still shaking him off LOL
You have to be just a miserable person not to love what you saw last night. Game 7 of 162 in a 15-5 game and people are trying to act like it was more than that.

Oh, man…don’t you even know the proper order to eat M&M’s/ always save the red ones and brown ones until last. No real M&M’s afficiando would even consider eating the blue ones under any circumstance. Ed,
Thanks.
Did someone pee in Gammons’ chowdah? The Red Sox did? That explains why he’s going off on Swisher, when his punkass golden boy Josh Beckett is the problem child.
Stay loose Swish. Srsly I hate these uptight corporate people telling you how to ACT IN A GAME !
Francesa agrees with Pete. Swish should keep the ball. no big dill pickle.
Everytime I think I am finally getting into the soccer that sport makes me so mad. First it was when the World Cup was decided on penalty kicks in 06 (that is pathetic), and now watching the UEFA playoff and seeing the loser is eliminated after a tie without even one overtime round.
Rebecca: the last time I was in London I really wanted to see Arsenal again, but the only match during my visit was an away game in Birmingham. I waffled back and forth but eventually didn’t make the trip. It ended up being a 0-0 draw in a steady rain. You just don’t know how these things are going to go.
‘it also doesn’t bother me that posada was in a bad mood about it. a little edginess is not a bad thing on a team.’
Randy I love ya but game 7…really I mean really ?
Pete,
Why aren’t Damon and Matsui playing tonight against the right-handed pitcher?
-Brian
Got it Nick thanks. I knew it was aggregate but forgot how the whole tiebreaker system worked. I also forgot the second leg was today so that shows how involved I am in euro soccer. Until I can actually get to see a game live it won’t feel the same way as following baseball, football are for me.
gardner needs to bunt for a hit every time he goes to the plate. clearly, they are not going to give him anything to hit.
“Stay loose Swish. Srsly I hate these uptight corporate people telling you how to ACT IN A GAME !”
*cough*Mike Kay*cough*, he’s not even funny himself but yet he had to put down someone else?
Never liked soccer. No pun intended, but your natural instinct is to grab the ball with your hands. Hated it as a kid.
Kevin Millar is a clown, Nick Swisher is not (my opinion).
Swish is a fun guy that actually enjoys the game of baseball (what novel concept!). Whenever I see him play though, it seems like he is trying his hardest to win the game. There is a difference between being a clown and having fun.
Melancon is a beast, he needs to be in the majors ASAP.
Braylon Edwards to the Giants?
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/ne.....;type=lgns
“Nobody was laughing,” Posada said. “Nobody was laughing. Today was embarrassing; just one of those days where everything went for them and nothing went for us. We didn’t pitch or do the things we were supposed to do. Nobody was laughing.”
Okay, so nobody was laughing. At least not in Posada’s eyes. Derek Jeter had a different take, saying “you have no choice” but to laugh when things get that out of hand.
“Whether Swish pitched or not, it’s still the same result,” Jeter said. “You get a chuckle out of it because it’s him and he’s not going to stop talking about it.”
“You have to be just a miserable person not to love what you saw last night. ”
Agreed. I stopped watching the game last night after it got out of control. When I woke up this morning and saw on this blog a pitcher of Swisher pitched and enjoyed it that made my day. I thought it was hilarious.
bdog in case you missed the UEFA scoring- liverpool was eliminated because they lost the first leg of the series 3-1 at home. the scoring is aggregate which is kinda neat. Refer to Nick in SF’s post about the scoring for clarification. It’s a great game once you figure out all the scoring, leagues, etc

I haven’t had Chuckles in a looooooong time, but I used to save the red and black for last – in that order. Black licorice is my favorite. I used to separate my M&Ms into colors. I went to turn on MLB on my Comcast this afternoon and the channel wasn’t where it was last night. I thought they took away my MLB (I want my MLB!!!) Lo and behold, as I scrolled through the channels, I FINALLY have MLB-HD! On a different channel and no heads-up from Comcast. Sigh.
jerkface- Why do you think Kapler disappeared to Japan when testing started?
:
‘Melancon is a beast, he needs to be in the majors ASAP.’
Dude can he work up to 50 IP before we even think this, let him go against multiple lineups then see where he’s at. I do think they will rush him and end up yo yoing him this yr. between AAA and ML. The earliest he should be up is June.
That’s why Jeter is the captain. He knows what Swisher is about and isn’t going to throw him under the bus.
Six days for Beckett!! There is justice
‘Braylon Edwards to the Giants?’
Is it final ?
jennifer,
I thought Kapler went to manage Boston’s minor league team?
“Dude can he work up to 50 IP before we even think this”
No because I was thinking this last August. His call-up is long past due. He was ready last summer, the Yanks don’t need to wait until June.
“Oh, man…don’t you even know the proper order to eat M&M’s/ always save the red ones and brown ones until last. You are a freakin riot. I thought you used the licorise stuck in your teeth to throw at the kids in the front row, missing and landing on that big haired women?
ehmmm ehmmm. Whoever said i ate the blue ones?
Swisher Brandon (I LOVE ME SOME ME !)
i’m just saying there’s room for different personalities on winning teams.
red sox fans are going to hate swisher if he stays playing well. he has the kind of personality that can really annoy the opposition. i remember him annoying me when he was with the a’s.
he’s cocky or confident depending on your point of view. i’m just happy that cashman made the deal to get him. this is one move of his that i like. according to the torre book he got betemit at the expense of bernie. so he’s made amends for that with swisher. betimit was just a mistake.
nothing like trading a mistake for someone good.
Nick: Only soccer game I’ve been to was Sunderland/Ipswich in January 2007. It was FREEZING and was a 1-0 final score.
We all know if the pen blows another game or 2, Cashman will panic and bring up Melancon.
Ditto if Gardner is hitting .200 by Memorial day and Jackson is hitting .350 with lots of walks and few Ks
These are the Yankees…. they always panic and rush guys.
Speaking of throwing people under the bus, I read a quote last night from Posada that he was trying to remind Wang about his mechanics, but….[he wasn't listening].
I just think people need to loosen the strangle hold fitted tie, no one, from the new generation of Yankees fans no one loves the uptight bunch, you love a guy Swisher you can’t believe he’s here, part of me thinks he would be perfect for the Mets and that’s sad because when is it that the Yankees all the sudden took baseball as a 9 to 5 job instead of a game and really that’s the stuff that seperates a team from being a team, be competitive but don’t be uptight and bring people down about stuff. It’s a game no one dies on the field unless it’s a horrific event.
ed- Seriously I could have sworn that Kapler went to Japan for a season or two, than returned and possibly managed a red sox farm team. Start em’ early is what I say.
kay says its not cool what swish did. what and kay knows what cool is.

Well, Doreen, I just assumed that with 4 kids, two dogs and a husband, you’d ground them off to the nub. My ex-wife always said that I’d be the death of her. She’s got me to thank for her long life. She’s staying alive to spite me.
j/k. She’s a great lady, and we’ve always enjoyed time together, even after we divorced. A good day was going to the grocercy store with her and embarrassing her by telling her that I couldn’t find her “Skoal”….in a very loud voice. southern women don’t think that’s funny for some reason.
All depends on how the pen is performing.
They may prefer to wait on Melancon but they might not have a choice. As usual, performance at the big league club determines these things.
Kapler left the Boston Red Sox for Japan’s Yomiuri Giants after the 2004 World Series. He elected to leave for more money (a $2 million deal plus a $700,000 signing bonus, compared to the $750,000 salary he received from the Sox), and the chance to prove he could be an everyday player. After struggling and eventually being waived in July by the Yomiuri Giants, Kapler was immediately signed by the Red Sox after clearing Japanese Central League waivers.
http://sonsofsamhorn.net/wiki/.....abe_Kapler
Gabe was appointed Manager of the Greenville Drive at the end of the 2006 season. Gabe returned to the majors in 2008 as a utility outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Sounds like Braylon Edwards on his way to the Giants. Good because he’s a better fit then Boldin.
I’m hearing a 2 and a 5. No problem with that.
No Melancon until May 15 at the earliest, the smart money says.
Who the hell listens to SPORTS RADIO anyway?
“it also doesn’t bother me that posada was in a bad mood about it.”
Agree. The right balance of Swishers and Posadas on a team is a good thing.
‘They may prefer to wait on Melancon but they might not have a choice. As usual, performance at the big league club determines these things.’
He needs more AAA experience, he’s a good one but I’d wait to get him promoted, atleast hold off until June. You can even swing a deal for a reliever in the meantime like Albaladejo + Miranda go after the Marlins Leo Nunez.
If Wang comes out of the office limping you know something is up.
“No Melancon until May 15 at the earliest, the smart money says.”
That saves a year of arbitration right?
Albaledejo + Veras or Bruney + Miranda for Leo Nunez..something like that.
What makes you think Melancon needs more AAA experience? He’s dominated every level of the minors. Good/polished relievers are usually fast movers. Melancon does not need more minor league experience.
jennifer
No diferent than what Rasner did. Financial security for your family is a good thing.
Jennifer,
HA, I found out the truth. You are right, Kapler went to Japan shortly after the 2004 world series, couldn’t make it in Japan, and came back in July 2005. Injuried himself in September 2005, then announced his “retirement in Decemeber of 2006″. THEN, he went on to manage Boston’s single-A team for a year.

Somehow, I think even we northern women would not find that funny (Skoal), GB7.
Didn’t sound as bad as I remembered it. But Posada is clearly frustrated that he can’t help.
Posada motioned several times during the game for Wang to keep the ball down, but he could not fix his mechanics.
“We’ve got to get him down in the zone, and I can’t do it,” Posada said. “Wanger’s better than that, and he knows it. Right now, he’s just going through some delivery problems.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04.....f=baseball
‘What makes you think Melancon needs more AAA experience? He’s dominated every level of the minors. Good/polished relievers are usually fast movers. Melancon does not need more minor league experience.’
Because he’s 1 yr. off TJS and has 105.1 IP of minor league experience
As long as Bruney can hold down the 8th, they’ll hold off on Melancon according to their original plans.
Patrick: yes.
“Melancon does not need more minor league experience”
It sure doesn’t look like it. Relievers don’t need that many innings like starters. Same for Robertson who was in AAA alot last year.
Just last yr. he got his fastball up to 96 mph. They should bring him up slowly and not damage potentially thier next CL.

It makes sense that the Yanks would wait to promote Melancon until they can get another year on the arbitration clock.
For crying out loud Girardi, stay with a set line up for at least one week. How do you expect our hitters to get comfortable if they are never in the same spot!!!!!

That’s your 2nd strike for getting Doreen and I mixed up. 1 more time and either you get a timeout or Doreen has to take 2 of my kids and dogs. If she takes the teenagers, I’ll keep the dogs.

Melancon is further along then 1 y/r in his TJS recovery. He had it in October 2006.
Should we be offended? Saying we all look alike is like saying GB7, randy l, and Pat M. all look alike!
didn’t get into soccer during the world cup a couple years ago. total snoozefest if you ask me. i’d give it another chance though, i think.
was that headbutting game as good as it gets?
“Because he’s 1 yr. off TJS and has 105.1 IP of minor league experience”
2 years off TJ surgery – he had the surgery at the end of 2006. He was completely healthy last season. 105 IP is plenty of minor league experience, especially for a reliever. That is like 2 full seasons in the minors. The only way he got through so many innings is because he’s so polished.
Melancon is 100% ready for the majors, the only reason he isn’t up is because of arbitration.
Swisher’s pitching stint made my night last night. I think that he had just the right attitude: When life deals you lemons, make lemonade. I’d rather have the team loose and ready to go tonight rather than dark, brooding and self-flagellating, as Kay would seem to prefer.
Reminds me of the story about the time that Mantle was ragging on Yogi about how easy it is to call a game. Whitey told Mantle to go ahead and call his game that day and Mickey did, sending in signals from center field. They laughed their way through the game, and they won. What do you think of dem apples, Mr. Posada?
Someone has held Cody for Ransom. Asking price: $2.99
Hey Swisher Brandon-
Regarding your 4:48PM post, have you been reading William Faulkner, or Casey Stengel?
I say good for Swisher. Someone on the team needs to enjoy playing the game.
Jamison: Most teams don’t used the same exact line up more than seven or eight times an entire season.
So the problem with Wang is in his head?

That’s your 2nd strike for getting Doreen and I mixed up. 1 more time and either you get a timeout or Doreen has to take 2 of my kids and dogs. If she takes the teenagers, I’ll keep the dogs.
————————————————————
LOL. brrrrr…..two kids, especially teenagers gives me the shakes. It was always such a pleasure having my three teenage granddaughters here for the weekend. 25 towels, stockings, curlers and hair dryers everywhere. I got so sick of hearing Johnny Depp and Patrick Swayzee talking, I’d get sick for a week. I assume they only made one movie a piece, since that’s all they ever brought with them. Didn’t they ever hear of Gene Autry?
The call for a fixed lineup is idiotic. With Texeira out, several starters slumping, and a paper cut-out at third, there’s no way Girardi can stick with a set lineup.
Since when is 105 IP enough experience, that has to be the …
Honestly I dont think Pena can do as bad as Ransom. Ransom was a pretty much sure out whenever he came up to bat.
I usually don’t other looking at game threads but I made the mistake of quickly perusing the general content of last night’s game thread. It was absolutely brutal in terms of the over-reactionary stuff people conjure up.
I’m convinced some people have negative IQ’s and I likened merely skimming the thread to receiving a sudden, surprise non-surgical vasectomy with a blunt object.
I’m reminded of why to stay away during games. Especially losing games. Think, people: Its a game. Sometimes you lose. In baseball, in fact, it’s unusual when a team loses fewer than 10 games in a month. You do yourself absolutely no good by getting so worked up about what’s happening, so often, especially when you’re not actually taking part in the game. It’s just a game …. entertainment.Try sitting back and relaxing when it’s not going so well. Or just flip the channel. Or sit back with a bag of Cheetos and download a porno then call your doctor in a panic about the unusual orange coloration you discovered when you woke up.
AJ — you could not do any worse than Ransom
Ansky, I’ll never look at Cheetos the same way again…
“Or sit back with a bag of Cheetos and download a porno then call your doctor in a panic about the unusual orange coloration you discovered when you woke up.”
And here I thought I was the only one to use Frito Lay products as a lubricant. Who knew?
“Honestly I dont think Pena can do as bad as Ransom. Ransom was a pretty much sure out whenever he came up to bat.”
right now, Pena is doing what Ransom did last season. batting 1000 after sitting for a few days, he still bats a 1000. AS of now, Pena has a hit in the 3rd game, and a walk in last night’s game. Someone has been learning from Swisher this season so far.
Wave …
Or game threads, for that matter
I think Wang just need ML innings and some time. I hope it’s not in his head or we can have a Rick Ankiel issue here. But he was still young in his career and then got hurt and missed the majority of the season. Hopefully by mid may he is giving us 6+ innings again and returns to form.
FINALLY Ransom is out of the lineup. I don’t care if Pena goes 0 for his next 50, atleast we’ll have his defense. Ransom wasn’t contributing towards any aspect of the game thus far.
I’ve come to realize that Kay is just a very good employee of YES, he does and says what he is told. Never a Criticism over Matsui(too much Ad revenue) or Cano (Big Time Jersey Sales to the Latin market). I get the business side of it I really do, My Background is Media Sales/Media Relations But he’ll be the first one to Jump on Swish, until swish of course starts selling jerseys because he’ll (Swish) become a fan favorite…
I’m not Crazy about Kay, but he just did what his producer told him, most likely after his producer got an earful from an angry PR director. There is a reason behind everything said on the air.. don’t ever forget that…
Ansky,
is your name short for Anakin Skywalker?
Well, zman, the visual and the level of intelligence it would take to be surprised enough to call one’s doctor in a panic (and the even level of panic) sure equates to the game threads.
That Chester Cheetos cat is so creepy. Making people do mean things.

What defense? You don’t know whether he can play third base or not? He has all of 5 spring training games at third.
Give Ransom a break, he did hit some balls hard, which it could be hits BUT he has been robbed couple of times already.

Lastings Milledge optioned to AAA. Hmm.
Maybe Swisher was smiling because A) The game was a joke, and B) The Yankees have a payroll of 200 Mil, and had to use an infielder to pitch there 8th inning. I’m sure the Rays were smiling at that too.

Doreen,
Damn, my Lastings Milledge Rookie card keeps going down in value!
GreenBeret, you’re right. Forgot he was SS. Either way, he is an upgrade considering how poorly Ransom has been playing. His at-bats have been painful to watch. I’d rather have them use the DH for him than the pitcher.
The Yanks need a guy like Swisher — that whole clubhouse has had a collective stick up its butt since Wells left.
As for Melancon, most of that excellent work this year is against the Phillies’ dreadful Lehigh Valley AAA team. He may be the next Mariano for all we know, but give him a month of work in the minors first. At least he can throw strikes consistently, contra Veras and Robertson and Marte.
Ansky,

“was that headbutting game as good as it gets?”
Anytime France is involved, no, it’s not as good as it gets.
Who wants to bet Wang throws seven scoreless innings next time out? As for Swisher, what is he supposed to do? He’s a position player asked to pitch in a game that was a disaster. I’d smile at the absurdity of it all as well. What would have been a more appropriate reaction? Wear a scowl and start throwing bean balls? The fan and media reaction is adding to the absurdity of it all. The story is Wang and he will be fine.
“Get well, Damon. People need to stop assuming the worst when someone’s not in the lineup.”
Were people assuming he was abducted by aliens? Arrested for using Cheetos in public?
Watching Mark Fidrych pitching a June 1976 game against the Yankees on MLB right now. Willie Randolph’s rookie season. Looks so young.
Anyway, amazing how quickly those 30-year-old games move. Pitchers work fast and no one takes a lot of pitches or steps out of the box.
Another thing, this was a Monday Night Baseball game – so it’s no Yankees classic.

There’s a few of those right now, including everyone’s darling. He’d have 3 errors if Giambi was still at first base. 1-20 and 5 strikeouts with 14 ground balls isn’t exactly carrying his weight, either.

I’ll take this bet. Frankly, I’d be hugely and pleasantly surprised if he simply lasted 7 innings.

I’ve wondered about Milledge for a while. While not having any first hand experience seeing him play, by reports he is a good athlete; that and young, something we seem to need. I wonder if Billy Epler’s scouts have checked him out to see what’s wrong with him, and if it’s correctable to the point of him becoming a good OF. If so, then there may be a match to be made.
And not just for 2009. With three OFs contracts expiring in the offseason (Damon, Nady, and Hideki), I can see a longterm opening.

From mlb.com RE: new YS and ADA accessibility
“In addition, the stadium is the only one in the Major Leagues that has implemented wheelchair lifts in both dugouts, allowing wheelchair users direct access to both the players’ bench and the field.
“People who are in wheelchairs should have the same ability to go into the dugout on the [stadium] tour as people who don’t need wheelchairs,” Levine said. “For example, Joba Chamberlain’s dad is in a wheelchair. ”
I’m sure that was included in the design, in the event Pavano was re-signed. Actually, a pretty interesting story…

“UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Heard from a friend that Nick Swisher is getting killed on the radio back in NYC for the crime of smiling while on the mound last night.
I predicted this last night. The Yankees Morality Police love to hammer non-issues like this. The Yankees have much bigger issues than a player smiling. ”
I’m not trying to rain on your parade Pete but predicting this is like predicting the day after Wednesday is Thursday.
This is Yankeeland, the world of revisionist history where recent players are a disgrace to the great Yankee tradition of perfect role models and upstanding citizens.
FWIW,
Espn’s Accuscore Probability Predictor has the Yankees with 4.6 runs and the Rays with 4.3 (essentially a 50/50 game)
I wonder if Robinson Cano had been joking on the bench with Melky last night if people would have felt the same way? Somehow I doubt it.
If Swisher had hit .219 with the Yankees last year he would have been KILLED on this blog. Absolutely KILLED regardless of how fun loving he is. Ozzie Guillen surely didn’t think he was a very fun loving guy last year when he was on the White Sox.
It’ll be interesting to see what the folks on this blog say if Swisher has another year like the one he had last year.
I can’t count how many times I had to read about Robinson Cano and his so called dumb smile and the fact that he’s not a winning player on this blog last year.
Now the team NEEDS somebody like Swisher and his personality to bring the team together.
The hypocrisy by some posters on this board is laughable at times, it really and truly is laughable.
Nick Swisher is the tits. Anybody who hates on what he did last night can suck it.
“I can’t stomach watching Ransom, who constantly looks as if someone has just stolen his blankie.”
He actually has the same look I had my first week in high school. I had just moved to town, didn’t know anyone, but I tried to give off the impression that I was “too cool for the room.” Using ambivolence to fit in… didn’t work for me then, not working for Ransom now (especially since he’s not hitting).
Hey I havnt had direct tv for very long and i see that this game isnt going to be on YES. does anyone know what channel this will be on on direct tv?
Swisher is the type of guy that will streak after a game if he was dared to do so. The dude is ok in my book. Keep the positive energy in that clubhouse and field Swish.
I don’t care one way or the other about Swisher pitching last night, though, it would/will be a disaster if he hurts his arm. If it did anything good, it got somebody in the bullpen an extra day’s much needed rest.
“does anyone know what channel this will be on on direct tv?”
ch. 9 if you in New York.

cano’s smile was when he swung at a terrible pitch instead of walking or not getting to ball he should of caught in a “close game”.i know the game wasn’t over last night but giradi coached like it was.bring in veras instead he only threw 5 pitches the night before, all out of the strike zone.swisher seems to try hard and has energy,we yankee fans have been craving that for years.
Thanks Ed, it was close. FYI it is channel 59 for CT Direct TV.
Raymagnetic,
You certainly make some valid points. But not everyone wanted to get rid of Cano or made racist generalizations about him.
When Cano can come in and throw a scoreless inning, he’ll get some bonus cool points, too.
When Swisher’s offensive struggles affect his fielding, he’ll be deducted accordingly.
And finally, when Swisher can’t even field a simple grounder in a day game because he loves the night life, we’ll call him out on it, too.
We may be harsh, but we try our best to be fair.
1. raymagnetic – couldn’t agree with you more.
2. I’m watching the end of that 1976 game where Mark Fidrych beat the Yankees. My gosh, seeing how genuine a person Fidrych was. And seeing young Warner Wolf, Bob Uecker, and Bob Prince. Look at the number of CGs he threw! Ralph Houk really abused him. No wonder he blew out his shoulder. Hearing that he died the other day was a real blow to me; another part of my youth gone.
Rest in peace, Bird.
Swish may have smiled on the mound, but why not? This season has been nothing but fun for him. Plus his tweet last night was great…’My arm is killing me hahahahahaha’ The guy is having fun in an environment where most people can’t taake pressure. Good for swish
swisher is playing like a guy who doesn’t mind getting the uniform dirty.Thank god,a ballplayer.he wasn’t picked by beane 16th overall by accident.i think last years time with ozzie was a fluke and he’ll be pretty good when it’s all said and done.

The funniest thing about that article were the comments section… I’m with the guy who couldn’t make it past May. LOL
GLove, I agree. I didn’t like last night, but not because of anything Swisher did. I admire people who are passionate about and enjoy life and Nick certainly does, lol. It’s not just Nick, though – you’re right. AJ, CC, Tex – they’ve put their own stamp on the clubhouse. Given that they are so new and coming into a veteran clubhouse, that’s not easy to do. I’m going to see if I can find the clip on You Tub – apparently the starters were watching Nick and getting a kick out of it, lol. It’s better than moping around and worrying, eating their hearts out. I also agree with Randy – I’m glad Jorge was angry. Isn’t this what people were missing for so long?
“I can’t count how many times I had to read about Robinson Cano and his so called dumb smile and the fact that he’s not a winning player on this blog last year.”
I agree with that. I do find it odd that when Swisher laughs it’s somehow him keeping things loose but were Cano to do the same it’s simply a sign of him not being serious and being lazy.
And that is not simply limited to Cano’s underperformance last year.
Even the year before when Cano had a terrific year both defensively and at the plate many Yankee fans were incensed about Cano smiling or laughing or not taking the game “serious” enough.
But somehow when Swisher does it it’s a huge team plus?
I have no idea at all why there is this differing reaction but it’s there.
I was also thinking about people’s reaction to some of the comments Ian Kennedy made last year where he was perceived as not being serious enough or taking the game to hear enough. But of course that can be explained by Kennedy’s awful performance. Same thing for Melky.
But Cano is harder to explain because he was killed for joking around while performing at an all star caliber.
Where did this Cano loves the night life stuff come from?
raymagnetic,
Regarding the perception of Cano and Swisher…
To me, you have to pick your moments to act out. If Swisher were struggling at the plate, he wouldn’t have gotten the same reception from us. None of us whined about Robi when he misplayed grounder while hitting .340… just don’t do it when you’re hitting .260.
Not all that different from real life. If you’re performing well at work, and the company is going strong – then by all means have a good time with it. But don’t play a practical joke on your boss if you’re not getting the job done, or if he/she has just laid some people off.
David Wells joining the TBS broadcast team (who knew they even had one!):
Wells will make his debut on May 3, for the broadcast of Boston at Tampa Bay, a rematch of the 2008 American League Championship Series, but the true scheduling genius will emerge in his next assignment, two weeks hence.
He will be back in the booth on May 17, for the Twins at the Yankees. The significance? It will be the 11th anniversary of Wells’ perfect game — against the Twins, in the old Yankee Stadium.

“I’m watching the end of that 1976 game where Mark Fidrych beat the Yankees. My gosh, seeing how genuine a person Fidrych was.”
I think Fidrych threw 250 innings as a rookie. He’s always one of the guys I think about when people start talking about the good old days when there were no innings limits and baseball players were men, etc., etc.
Fidrych wasn’t really the same afterwards – always injured.
250 innings when he was 21.
Let’s see what happens with Cole Hammels this year…
“Apparently no call-ups to New York”
http://community.thetimes-trib.....-york.aspx
“But Cano is harder to explain because he was killed for joking around while performing at an all star caliber.”
The people who were killing Cano are probably the same people who are ripping Swisher now. Cano and Swisher are inherently different… the game LOOKS like it comes so easy to Robi, as opposed to a guy who has to work hard at it, like Swisher. No of course, they’re both tremendous talents (relatively) and they both work their tails off… but Cano has that smooth air about him that can be off-putting to some – especially when he botches a groundball, or gives away an at-bat.
New life theory:
Start blog, donate to charity, get free stuff.
I’ll explain more on my blog after the game tonight, but it’s really awesome.
Actually, the same people that are blowing Swisher’s horn were the same ones that were on Ransom’s and Coke’s bandwagon this spring…..you know…the same ones that junped off about three days ago. The first time Swisher hits his slump, they’ll melt away faster than a Klondike Bar on the hot pavemnent in July.
Why did I just notice that Swisher is hitting cleanup tonight? And it took them putting it on MLB for me to notice???

pat,
It’s old news, if it was even true. From what I can gather, he and Cabrera liked to have a good time. They were in a (pretty good) reggaeton video. Of course, this could’ve been in the offseason, but it did nothing to dispel the talk that they liked to party. I think the organization dealt with the issue, and it seems like Robi has settled down. And as a result, his daygame performance has improved ten-fold.

Gb, definitely.
I thought Melky would have gotten the start given his two hits last night.

Anyone surprised the Yanks didn’t make any roster moves? Again, they’re counting on AJ to give them innings, but I’d prefer to have fresh arms just in case……..

GB: It’s really that bad?
UPDATE, 6:28 p.m.: Damon said he planned to play tomorrow. “I’m under the weather,” he said. “I haven’t had great sleep lately. It’s probably just caught up to me. … I’m very weak right now. Everything is creaky right now and nothing really feels good.”
Ouch
Betsy – I think roster moves are sometimes more complicated than just sending guys in different directions. It might entail moves around the 40-man, and other implications. And, for all we know, someone may be the topic of trade discussions. I don’t think it would look so good if someone you were talking up as trade bait got sent down to the minors.
…That’s the last time I trust what someone’s saying before checking the weather forecast myself.
have they set a date for nick swisher day yet?
“Anyone surprised the Yanks didn’t make any roster moves?”
Yes. What it means they are banking on Burnett but also Pettette to give them innings tomorrow. And if they do the pen will be rested if they don’t well…

GB: It’s really that bad?
————————————————————
No, Rebecca (if this really is our Rebecca). That was a clone clown.
I remember the Expos getting rained out years ago… had a leaky dome. Lord knows the bullpen could use a day off, but we’ll just have to wait until the Rays get a new stadium without a roof in a decade or so.
2800 out of 3600 yanks fans think the yanks will win the whoole thing this year – we are an optimistic bunch.
Im not worried about wang. I think 2 horrible starts happens just because without rhyme or reason. However, if he comes out next starts and bombs once again, I think they may be overlooking a mechanical flaw because 3 horrendous starts for wang doesnt happened just because, No need to worry …. yet.
Glad to see tex is back in but now damon is out. Without arod, the lineup looks easier and without tex, the lineup looked weak. Hopefully, everyone can stay reasonably healthy until arod is back in it because without him, another major player missing just looks bad.
Unfortunately, AJ is under pressure to contain a losing streak for his second straight start. The good thing about having a rotation of CC, wang, AJ, Pettitte, Joba is that any of them can win on any night but its unfortunate that AJ is being relief upon to stop the bleeding to starts in a row.
The Scranton team is all the way up in Buffalo. It’s not like they can just pick up the phone and say, “Make sure you bring your glove.”
Actually, I like the non-move. The starters are going to have to give length. And the relievers we have are going to have to get the job done.
Wow big gamble not making a roster move hopefully AJ has one of his 7 innings 12 K’s 2 H performances.
GB: Yeah, it’s me.
When people imitate me they generally say things that you wouldn’t want your wife to hear.
Every pitcher is responsible for keeping a winning streak going or to stop a losing streak. Burnett’s under no more pressure than any other starter.
David Cone and David Wells partnered on renting out a suite at the new Stadium for the season.
For ultimate entertainment value, that would be the place to watch a game!

“Actually, I like the non-move. The starters are going to have to give length. And the relievers we have are going to have to get the job done.”
Fortunately, the 4 relievers not used yesterday are Girardi’s go-to guys. Torre probably would’ve emptied the pen, besides Mo.
One thing i dont really get is when did phil coke become incapable of pitching 4 or 5 innings and being a long man? i KNOW he was a starter last year and i know the yanks dont have a legit long man in the pen … so why is coke not filling the role when need be? Michael kay must have said about 100 times last night that the yanks have no long man and i kept thinking couldnt phil coke go 4 innings? Obviously I am wrong here but i just want to know why coke can no longer throw more than an inning or two when he started not even a year ago – its just mop up duty afterall.

===========================================
Wow, feel like I wrote this. And I did – repeatedly, last year, and all the racists on here got jumpy and protested too much.
Guys from the Carribbean who smile a lot (Bobby Abreu) and dance (Cano/Melky) are castigated and accused of being “dumb” and cavalier. It has a name: racism.
I think Dave Eiland set a record for saying the same thing over and over in a 6 minute interview.
Why I’m not a beat reporter – at about the 5 minute mark I would have been a wise guy and asked – “so Dave, how did his side sessions look?”

I thought Melky would have gotten the start given his two hits last night.
============================================
Here’s why Melky played last night. Girardi knows that Wang is a contact hitter, and if the ball ain’t sinking it’s going to be up. That means balls hit to the outfield. Combine that with Girardi’s apprehension about Posada throwing runners out, and you have the reason for Melky’s presence: fear of Tampa taking the extra base.
Tonight, it’s different, because AJ has swing & miss stuff, and Girardi is hoping the impatient Tampa lineup does just that. He also has Molina behind the plate, the keep the Rays somewhat honest at the back-end up-the-middle position.
I laughed when the reason given was the LHP. Gimme a break.
I know where you’re coming from bodhisattva, but I’m not sure I fully agree. Griffey Jr. was lauded for being enthusiastic and always smiling. I think the racist angle consumes maybe 10% of those critics, but the other 90% are looking for results first and personality second. Guys like Abreu, Griffey, Cano are held to a higher standard because they’re so talented. A guy like Kevin illar can be a goofball because he performs at his skill level – or so it seems.
Wang is a contact pitcher, that is
Rebecca: Do you complain about everything every single night? It’s tiresome. No one cares about your lame blog.

Right, but somehow, people unconsciously equate skill with laziness. It’s as if they’re not only talented, but that they don’t get any credit for developing the skill from that talent; it’s like they’re just idiot savants. In Abreu’s case, people actually say he’s not “clutch” and doesn’t “battle.”
I would bet you that if a caucasian player who furrowed his brow were up there fouling off pitches and demonstrating a great eye, running every count to 3-2 and getting hits with RISP and two outs, he’d be called “gutty” and a “battler.” But Abreu is from the Carribbean, and he smiles a great deal. Would people here admit they’d never think of him as clutch and a “tough” AB?
awesome, Pena is reading Garza’s scouting report.
I would think that Minny would like to have Garza and Bartlett back.
Nobody on the Rays should be pissed at Swish.. What else did they expect?
The people at MLB were having some fun with the Swish-pitcher stuff, fyi They conjectured that “the people in NY” probably didn’t like it. My take is that most of us here were okay with it, and I’d be willing to bet a majority of Yankees fans were more upset with Wang’s problems than Nick Swisher doing his thing out there in the 8th in a game that was already way out of hand.
I don’t like Garza.
I just wanted to comment regarding the earlier poster(s?) who commented on the changing lineups. The way Girardi needs to balance out the at-bats and make the best use of his extra outfielders plus Matsui and getting Posada to DH every once in a while, I wonder why anyone figured they’d see a set lineup this season?
Nice bloop hit by Gardner.
Let’s go Jete. Let’s go Yankees.
How long do you guys think until we see Mark Melancon come up?
Did you guys see Jeter smile looking for the sign? Terrible.

bats should not shatter like that
Melancon should already be here.
the great thing about pena is that he can play 2b well. that keeps cano honest by letting him know that he has to fight for a job. nothing wrong with that.

Well, I must say, the umitigated and bilious hatred for both Melky and Cano on this board last year – and for Melky this year, underscores this truth.
It’s interesting, since the two are at completely different levels in terms of ability. Cano had a bad year, and has been ridiculed and mocked by some very stupid people on this site. They mourn for a “gritty” player like Pedroia – another example of The Great White Hope.
Really, it’s transparent and revolting. It’s also noteworthy that the smarter posters on here tend to make cirticisms devoid of emotion and are specific. The “Melky’s fat” and “Cano’s a dumb, lazy ass” people outnumber them considerably. But call them what they are _ racists – and they have primals and attack you.
Oh swisher!!
I thought my husband was kidding when he gave me one, and said “Here, try this candy”.
It was like a flashback to the Mylanta of my childhood. Ack.
We have to get something from this.
It’s great to have Swisher to replace Abreu and Giambi as the guy who can make the pitcher work in a long at bat
even when he makes an out, he is going to help drive up the pitch count

i appreciate peter a. putting the audio on the blog, but eiland seems a little devoid of ideas and thus the repetition. i would like to hear a lot more from eiland like this audio. the thing that was missing was the pitch f/x doesn’t lie and wang is a foot off on his release point from his first game this year to a game last year when he was pitching well.
how does eiland not discuss the problem with the release point when it’s a fact that it’s different ? eiland is officially on the hot seat if wang continues to have problems. he did a good job of saying it’s wang’s fault because he didn’t take it on the field.
i’m not so sure this is what’s going on. to be continued.
Don’t compare cano to pedroia again. When cano plays hard everyday u can talk.

It’s still 2008, folks
Well they got one run but that was some piss poor situational hitting by the Yankees. That will need to be corrected if they are going to compete with the Rays and Sox.
You can’t have bases loaded, no outs, and get only 1 run. Like sloppy seconds.

Burnett looks fantastic so far.
If he puts up a great performance tonight that will calm a lot of nerves.

I called someone at work a girl and got my head bit off. I was given a lecture on how since I don’t call someone the same age a boy I shouldn’t call someone fresh out of college as a girl. It’s a woman or young woman. Fair I thought. I don’t call the interns in the office boys. They’re fine young men. So the female college grads are fine young women.
Strange to hear a female here call herself “a girl in a man’s world.” Shouldn’t it be “a girl in a boy’s world” or “a woman in a man’s world”. And females wonder why males walk around in a totally confused state with this stuff!

I like Burnett but I still don’t agree with this. Signing him to 5 years will remain questionable whether he wins 5 Cy Youngs in a row or not. It was a fair and reasonable opinion to have doubts about the contract, particularly the length.
That said, I have no reason to doubt he won’t be great and of course hope he is.

Kay wishes he played baseball so bad! He has no idea what its like to be in a clubhouse and shouldn’t act like he does.
mark, don’t try to understand it. My wife tells me that not all women are liberated and some want to be treated like they’re helpless and need protection. Those are the ones that call themselves girls I guess. The big problem is trying to figure out which ones are which.
Garza at 40 pitches.
that’s more like it. if they can keep making him work (even the Molina at bat wasn’t bad), they’ll get to him eventually.
And if by pundit you meant poster…then yes that was my prediction thus I drafted him on every one of my fantasy teams and laid 100 dollars on him to be the cy young and another 100 that he would win 20.
It would be nice to get 5 of those wins out of the way in april.

Uh oh… Sterling is going on his “pre-fab” noise rant. He always harps on that when they play there, that all it does is making me even more aware of it, and drives me crazy. Hey Sterling, stick to missing home run calls, will ya?!
Okay MY9 stinks, sound keeps cutting out.

That did NOT hit him.

It bounced in the dirt and hit Jose in the chest. Did not touch the hitter.
It hit the ground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey “pal” it doesn’t make me uncomfortable.
Its an uneducated blanket statement. And something like that is completely subjective and you have absolutely nothing to back it up.
How about this? I can’t stand Melky because he has regressed the past 2 years, he has mental lapses in the field, and frankly I don’t think he gives maximum effort.
I have never ripped Cano, and the comment section of this blog is usually very divided on Cano, some people support him strongly (myself being one of them) and others rip him. Personally, I think he tries hard, has great talent, and will be one of the best 2nd basemen in the league for a long time.
Guess what? Neither of those opinions has anything to do with the player’s background, race, of other nonsense. Its based upon watching them play. I can’t stand Carl Pavano, Josh Bectett, or Curt Schilling either, does that mean I’m racist against whites? Gary Sheffield is one of my least favorite players, I must hate blacks too right?
Your statement is just plain dumb and does not reflect with any accuracy the views of the majority of fans or bloggers. I’m sure that’s not true for some people, but for most it is.
I can’t stand Melky because he’s lazy and he doesn’t help my team win. He has not made any adjustments or shown any improvement since 2007. That’s probably why most fans don’t like him.
Playing the race card is pathetic in this situation.
“Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup / Clank ), wonder what it would be to catch him ????”

So now the ump gives them a gift ball?

The only way i would take Pedroia over Cano is if i wanted him to save us from the Orks.
The key is it is okay for women to call themselves girls, or perhaps those trusted men in their lives. But co-workers and casual acquaintances – not so much.
AJ getting squeezed on some of the pitches IMO.
Tampa announcers are outraged that the ball did hit him LOL
Control was a bit off that inning, but, he got through without damage. All in all, a nice start so far tonight for Burnett.
If Burnett pulls through today. I think his nickname should be “THE NEGOTIATOR”. He consistantly seems to convince people to come off the ledge. He also puts the negative nancies to bed early.
The only way i would take Pedroia over Cano is if i wanted him to save us from the Orks.
============================
LOL
Pitch 1 to Gardner was not a strike for AJ.
“I think Swisher really is a stud muffin looking for me to toast him.”
One word: Yikes.
Burnett looks nasty tonight. 7 strong, 8ks. Mark it down.
The 7:09 post is NOT from me.
Pete really does need to do something about registration. Or something to stop this nonsense.
Is it me, or are they just making him get at least 2 strikes before they even think of swinging the bat? Trying hard to get his pitch count up, but looking HORRIBLE at the plate.

It hit the ground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
————————————————————
Doesn’t make any difference whether the ball hit the dirt first, if the ball hits the batter after, it’s still a hit batter.
Miggs: I completely agree with you but to say that Melky does not try hard is wrong. You don’t know how hard he tries, this spring training instead of going to the WBC he stayed in camp and tried to win the job, and to say that Melky never helped the team win is just being ignorant.
You may not like Melky because you don;t think he is a good player, but that is no reason to trash his work ethic when you know nothing about it
Do the Rays think giambi is playing? They are employing the same shift.

The only way i would take Pedroia over Cano is if i wanted him to save us from the Orks.
Ok, that was really funny. The Orks, nice call!
wow – harsh (from Twitter):
bryanhochThey’re announcing the Yankees lineup to the tunes of “Money For Nothing.”
those Rays appear to be getting a little large for their britches…
Great pitch by Garza…Set Texeria up for that curve
Doreen,
I don’t like Garza either. Besides being a very good pitcher, he twitches like a chronic.
I’m sure he’s nice, though. Wouldn’t want to be accused of anything
You kinda get the feeling that the Posada sac-fly may be the only run scored tonight…
If this is how they are going to look against good pitching all year, we better hope and pray that CC and AJ have career years, because this offense looks REALLY bad. Game 8 or not, this looks as bad if not worse than last years offense
holy crap did anyone see that homerun saving catch Abreu just made in LF??? Why couldn’t he do that with us?? Why didn’t he pee his pants when hitting the warning track like usual?
Isn’t it Orcs?
Um, I mean, that’s what I heard, I don’t know myself….
i’m going to guess the offense will look a little different with A-Rod in and Pena/Ransom out…might just be me though
Ump is squeezing AJ.
I said against good pitching, we all know what AROD does against good pitching.
I know this is not about the game or baseball…but ESPN is doing a NFL schedule release special??? What else can they disect to death?
Put the children to bed parents. This pitching duel is for adult eyes only. Absolutely nasty pitching. 1 run might be plenty. I might need to take a cold shower after this one.
Really nice, economical inning at 10 pitches.
41 pitches for AJ so far
I can’t believe I’m saying this but i cant wait for A-Rod to come back, the line up is completely different with him in it. Never leave us again Alex
.
Vader,
The draft. I absolutely hate the draft and the hoopla that surrounds it. Mel Kiper, Jr. determining the fate of young men like he’s the Oracle or something.
It’s always wake me up in the morning and tell me who my team drafted.
Kay had to bring it up…
Oh hush Kay
Michael Kay just won’t let it go.
Brunett is really good!
Garza listening to Kay. Please just shut up.
whoa… Garza just buzzed Swish…
“Isn’t it Orcs?
Um, I mean, that’s what I heard, I don’t know myself….’
Damn Nick! It depends. If you bothered to ask what was the place of origin maybe you would understand the spelling.
Kay no one gives a damn, maybe you should put some work into your announcing. SWish Does IT!!!!
SWISHER!!!
Man I LOVE our newbies!!
Swishy!!!!! HR
is Kay back on the Swisher thing? I’m not watching live, but he was on and on about it on the radio today. I’m going to say the actual pitchers were more embarrassing than anything Swisher did…
Swish! At least Kay was happy about this HR.
That was great – why couldn’t it have been last time up???
I LOVE SWISHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice swish.
Swish for Mayor of Yankeeland!!!
LAUGH ABOUT THAT ONE!
Swish is rapidly turning into one of my favorite players. How’d you like them apples, garza?
Swisher answers back the chin music
Great job by Swish. Don’t get mad, get even. That brush back pitch was bush.
Brush *that* back, Garza!
And, it’s a Nickie Swoosh.
A lot of discussion? Um I think you were leading the parade! WFAN at least after 1pm no one was ticked about it.
“I know this is not about the game or baseball…but ESPN is doing a NFL schedule release special??? What else can they disect to death?”
Yet another reason to hate ESPN. One of the many terrible things to happen to that network was to get the Monday Night Football rights. They have to hype the brand.
Wow. Garza’s pissed. Moron.
Hey Kay?
Who’s laughing now?
Nick Swisher the switch hitter!!!!
those jerk camera man had to show Gabe Kapler right after the HR
lol
Um that was near his head, suspend him.
SUCK ON THAT KAY YOU OVERBEARING BUFFOON. Keep on Keepin on Nick!
So posada can suck it!!!! And everyone who is crying about Swisher pitching last night. That is what is wrong with the Yankees, their only fun is hazing rookies at the end of the season.
I like the loose feel of Swisher and even in the past Cano and Cabrera. Grown-ups need to remove the stick from their arse and have fun like kids, they will live longer.
Have I mentioned to everyone how much I love Swisher!
Coney all fired up.
Go ahead tell it like it is Cone.
Kay’s lost.
Swish splash, that ball took a fan bath.
I love David Cone.
haha Cone called Garza a head hunter.
If AJ keeps this up for the next 5 years, I may have to send a thank you card to my friend Roy Halladay.
cano didnt run that out.
KAY SHUT UP!!!
Can someone shove a cow bell in Kay’s mouth. Enough on yesterday man
Take the Red Bull, Derek and Mark!!!!
I’m buying redbull
What did Cone say for those of us not watching on the telly?
Can someone tell me why he is able to wag his glove around like that.
Doreen that’s not the way I was educated about it. It’s not a switch you should flip on and off at someone’s convenience on what they call themselves. Then some emales wonder why they’re not taken seriously. Make up your minds. I don’t know any male out of college who calls himself a boy. Seems they know the difference. The ladies where I work said females stop being girls the same time males stop being boys. I respect that. I’m not about to relearn a whole new way because some female wants to be a tough cookie and a cupcake at the same time. Thanks but no thanks.
Ha, S.o.S., touche. So what was the place of origin? Not Middle Earth?
Aj beter buzz a Ray this inning…
Saying they have no beef. They scored 15 runs. etc.
S.A.–It’s a marathon, not a sprint

Can someone shove a cow bell in Kay’s mouth. Enough on yesterday man
Cowbell is not big enough.
what happened what is cone saying?
DT, please tell me you’re listening to Sterling and Suzyn – because they just made a similar reference.
Will you people let it rest. If you hate Kay than turn the station you hve control of the clicker
Aj better buzz a Ray this inning…
Swisher! And I have him in my starting lineup for fantasy baseball baby!
haha- I am a few seconds behind, Swisher points a redbull at Tex, want one?
“Can someone shove a cow bell in Kay’s mouth”
How about a burger with ketchup pickles and cheese on it. Or a hot dog with mustard. Just like he likes it.
Posada is really starting to piss me off more and more…I just really despise the way he goes about his business. When Swish punished that ball after being thrown at even coney said that everyone on the bench should have been up yelling at Garza. Yet posada cant even muster any kind of emotion when celebrating with swish at the plate.
LOL Swisher is the Man, I loved his reaction after garza threw him the ball to the head…. He was like umm, i’ll get my chance and HE DID …. !
Only a spineless pinata like Selig would approve cowbells in a major league venue.
They’re not even used in Class A fields as promotional items but the Rays need to put rumps in seats.
HAHA! Did anyone catch Swisher offer Jeter and Tex the Red Bull he was drinking out of? WHAT A TEAM PLAYER!
Maybe he needs to give some to Jorge?
Jeter’s range looked fine there. Okay, he moved 3 mm. But it looked fine.
SWISHER FOR MVP!!!!!!!! At least with the Yankees he’s the MVP ON and OFF the field.. Gotta appreciate that!
Is Burnett throwing too many curveballs? I know it’s the 2nd time in the lineup, but he just threw 3 in a row to Crawford without offering that fastball. I can’t complain about the result, but I wonder how throwing that many curveballs will have an effect on his arm later in the season.
Was that an answer?
Atta boy AJ
Another reason why I love aj
pat m and dt-
thanks for reminding me of that very distinct pain that makes even swearing impossible- when even breathing hurts.
it would be however be nice to catch burnett. you’d have a lot to work with.
actually the worst thing that happened to me was when mickey mahler bounced a ball off the plate that came up and hit me in the throat. i was wondering why the trainer was calling the emt’s as i was lying on a table with my throat packed in ice. it turns out that if your voice box is broken the swelling cuts off the blood flow to your brain.
i was ok , but couldn’t talk for a week. some people thought that was an improvement.
“Swish has four homers and 11 RBI in eight games. Only Evan Longoria (5 homers, 12 RBI) is hotter. Swisher also has scored 10 runs and has 27 total bases”
In fairness, Longoria has played every game and has 9 more at bats…
Good boy AJ!!!
I don’t like it. But Garza started it.
Nick Swisher is exactly what the Yankees need and I hope it rubs off on some others. He plays the game very hard and has fun which is what I like to see. AJ and Swish to me are perfect fits to get us where we need to go.
I’m with you mark. Anyway I have a WOMAN who is waiting for me to help our GIRL with her math homework! I know the difference too.
Nice job by Burnett.
“Can someone shove a cow bell in Kay’s mouth”
Yeah and fill it with ketchup!
I love Burnett NOW> That was what we were missing the last few years. someone throws at us, throw at em back!!!! Eff ya….
Longoria with chin music.
no messing with us

HAHA! Did anyone catch Swisher offer Jeter and Tex the Red Bull he was drinking out of? WHAT A TEAM PLAYER!
Maybe he needs to give some to Jorge?
———————————————–
HAHA , Yeah man I saw that too, he’s a genuine team player, I love his attitude, Geez He’s becoming my Favorite Yankee after A-Rod
Nice job, AJ. Buzz him, and then strike him out.
With Joba, CC, and Burnett, noone will be throwing at Jeet this year!
“DT, please tell me you’re listening to Sterling and Suzyn – because they just made a similar reference.”
nope. watching the Tampa guys on Extra Innings TV.
What did they say?
bronx Jeers- LOL!! Lots of ketchup.
Why do I get the feeling there’s gonna be a brawl later.
That’s the way to do it! Knock him down and then strike him out.
These are not Mr. Torre’s pushover Yankees!
Swisher will go up to AJ and give him a fist pump.
“They’re not even used in Class A fields as promotional items but the Rays need to put rumps in seats.”
Who even wants a cowbell? Are there that many people doing Walken impersonations nowadays?
Man, AJ is cruising.
Nice way to win brownie points in Yankeeland.
Good to see someone respond to a high hard one in the next frame. Granted, Garza’s may or may not have been intentional but Butnett put it out there that he’s got no problem with responding. Yankee fans will love that.
“Can someone shove a cow bell in Kay’s mouth”
Yeah and fill it with ketchup!
===============================
Hahahahahahahaha
another great inning, and Burnett plays sherrif with the right player. Nice to see.
He wanted nothing to do with that ab after that chin music.
He couldn’t get away from the plate quick enough.
I’m loving our new pickups
AJ’s winning points with fans and teammates.
A.J. is as cool as the other side of the pillow.
***sheriff***
Absolutely love what AJ did there to Longoria. Take notice AL, these Yanks are messing around anymore. You come after our guys, we come right back after yours!!!!!!
“Why do I get the feeling there’s gonna be a brawl later”
Because the Rays aren’t a team that lets you go tic for tac with them.
They just start fighting you.
BTW if it was Mussina he would have not even brushed anyone off the plate.
sa- me too. But I hope it is over now. You dusted one of ours, we dusted one of yours.
“nope. watching the Tampa guys on Extra Innings TV.
What did they say?”
Suzyn was telling John about a friend (or someone) who was giving suggestions for Nick Swisher homerun calls. One was if the fountains were still in KC, and he hit one into them, it would be “Swish splash, that ball is taking a bath.” Odd.
that was a very nice country hardball exchange with garza/ swisher and burnett/longoria.
i like how swisher never even looked at garza.
just answered with a bomb.
.: Evan Longoria just wet his pants facing Burnett. A 1-2 pitch was high (but over the plate) and Longoria hit the dirt. Burnett then fanned him looking with a heater right over the middle.
“He wanted nothing to do with that ab after that chin music.
He couldn’t get away from the plate quick enough.”
He was so scared he almost forgot his bat LOL
Garza looks rattled. Or at least that’s what I want to see.
Molina’s gotta bunt on the first strike.
ouch
Bad luck!
Bad break for Molina.
BTW, if Melky was playing, that would be 5 switch-hitters in the lineup. Probably not a record, but impressive nonetheless.
Oh damn Molina. Ugh
Talk about your all time backfires
Are you kidding me? Hit and run, just bunt. You finally have a leadoff hitter on base and a chance to move him in scoring position? I like puting a play on, but a wrong combo to try to hit and run wih in that spot. Now, it’s inning over.
DAMMNBNLKKuofie
Interesting comment by Pete about Longoria. Wonder if Longoria reacted that way because he was expecting something from Burnett. Going up to hit already intimidated isn’t a good way to hit.
haha Vin –
yeah, I’m Sterling’s secret bud.
I’m the guy who taught him… it’s high, it is far, it is..
caught on the warning track.
“Ha, S.o.S., touche. So what was the place of origin? Not Middle Earth?”
Uhhh Nick. Middle Earth!! Ha!! How would you know that if you never watched it? You wouldnt happen to be one of those people who spends a week sleeping on the curb of the theatre waiting for the L.O.T.R. premier?

Close. The mid-’60s Dodgers had a regular all switch hitting infield.
Melky could definitely learn a thing or two from Brett’s plate approach.
.240 BA/.549 OPS

I’m not talking about flipping a switch. I’m talking about a matter of familiarity, that’s all. Like you might call someone a nickname if you knew them, but in a work situation you would not.
I’m not talking about game-playing or anything like that. Amongst ourselves, “girls” is not derogatory or demeaning – it’s rather neutral.
I also don’t condone people (women) who will chastise a man who calls them “girl” when it’s obvious no offense was meant.
Looks like we have some new rivals.
Jose Molina: I take a lot of pitches. So far, I’ve taken about 60 pitches from A.J. tonight.
AJ is not getting pitches on the corner.
Pete,
he could be pitching better if he didn’t walk a guy just an observation ha ha…
Is it just me or does that outside curve keep getting squeezed while garza’s has been called more than not?
Molina saves so many runs defensively that he’s actually about a league average catcher. The more you know.
Is Pete ‘Jennifer’? Wouldn’t be surprised after the N*o
M*aas thing.
A.J is nasty
Garza has a tight zone. Pena walked on strike 2. Let’s not fall into the old trap of blaming the umps.
Everyone is ignoring my question. Is anyone else having trouble with my9? the voice is cutting out on me.
AJ looks so focused
jennifer – my9 sucks…the sound is terrible – I’m there with you
WOW…..
rodney, I agree. AJ’s not getting the pitches that Garza is.
Ahhh! Kay said the magic no-no!
Another great, economical inning by Burnett. averaging 13 pitches an inning.
Rishi
Thank you for answering.
“Everyone is ignoring my question. Is anyone having trouble with my9?”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Does anyone else feel like b!tch slapping Kay at least once every game? Or is that just me?
AJ pitching a clinic.
Swisher is going to be the first 10 man to be voted to the all star game. To think we got him for BettaK.
Jennifer…I’m listening to the radio now cause my wife
wants to watch Idol..during the first hour of the game there was no probs w/ My9
jennifer-the sound on My9 goes in and out for me. Not the greatest
“Ahhh! Kay said the magic no-no!”
So did Sterling… kind of slipped out.
how many pitches is burnett at
MN John April 14th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Does anyone else feel like b!tch slapping Kay at least once every game? Or is that just me?
============================
It’s not just you
Burnett has been absolutely everything I was hoping for and so much more. This is the guy we saw every start pitching against us last year – he’s gritty, he doesn’t take shit from anybody, yet he’s calm and collected out there on the mound. His stuff looks downright nasty tonight, and he’s giving this team the pick-up they needed so badly after the stinker last night. It’s hard to feel bad about Wang when CC, AJ, Andy and even Joba have looked so good lately. (btw, I am completely sure Wang will get it fixed – the guy’s never had to face this kind of trouble in his career, but when you’re 46-15 over 2.5 seasons you don’t just forget how to pitch)
Kay is such a schmuck. Why is he trying to jinx it.
AJ @ 63 pitches
What the hell Michael? He just jinxed it.
Wow, I don’t know if it was total coincidence but Michael Kay totally respected the “tradition” of not announcing a “you know what” by using the magic words – until the end of the 5th inning, when he announced using the magic words. However the tradition is that it is fine to say it once 5 innings have passed!
WAY COOL MICHAEL KAY!
I on the other hand still prefer not to say it. That’s just me.
I am totally living out my fantasy as I get to I root for him both as a Yankee and as a member of my fantasy team!
WOO HOO!
Over and out!!!
AJ @ 63 pitches
wow. thanks.
S.o.S.: Ha yourself, I knew you spelled it wrong!
Yes, yes, it’s true, I saw all three movies. I also read the books. I didn’t sleep on the curb for any of them but I did see the last one the opening night (regular night, not midnight) at a big single-screen theater. My gf waited on line while I got some takeout from a nearby Indian restaurant. Good times, good times. What a great movie!
Paul- Why the heck is she watching idol. I’ve never seen that show, and don’t care to.
Is derek thinking about minka kelly??
Poor Jeter, looks lost at the plate.
I am watching this game in Taiwan ,
I think it wil be a no-hitter game !
I love AJ ! keep going !
I couldn’t help but laugh when Longoria struck out before that was fantastic. A.J. and Swisher are quickly becoming my favorite Yankees.
quick game in the 6th already.
J,
Makes her happy, I guess. Happy is good.
I like the radio….
AJ Burnett that is (on my fantasy team) not Michael Kay!
Burnett was the only player I was jonesing for the Yanks to get during the offseason. Man alive he loves being a Yankee. How sweet it is.
Texeria’s timing looks way off
How many times in the last 3 minutes has he said the words? Like 20?
He’s not going to pitch the no no.
Garza was squeezed on pitch 1 of the AB
I do not like that they are using a shift for tex
by the way, I hate Matt Garza
Swishy!
Kay has a pitcher in the booth that actually threw one so it counteracts the jinx this time. AJ is on his own.
I don’t believe uttering any specific words will alter a pitcher’s outcome…
Really, honestly do you?
What’s all the fuss about?
Touche Nick. You win!!
I still think the TWO TOWERS was better than THE RETURN OF THE KING. The rainy fighting scene with the ORKS is absolutely classic.
swisher is just amazing right now. this is fun to watch.
swish is a gamer. period.
“I am watching this game in Taiwan ,
I think it wil be a no-h****r game !
I love AJ ! keep going !”
So much to learn…
I liked the Two Towers with gollum’s crazy multiple personality scene. He is a good little wacko
vin
Be nice. If she is really from Taiwan she doesn’t know our crazy American rules.
Now that swing by Posada, that was funny.
Now that swing by Posada, that was funny.
“I don’t believe uttering any specific words will alter a pitcher’s outcome…
Really, honestly do you?
What’s all the fuss about?”
what ? you mean when i put whammys on red sox players through the tv it doesn’t work?
Swisher is feeling it at the plate right now and it is a welcome sight.
I have absolutely no problems with his demeanor or what happened last night.
Quite honestly I think that we could use a few more like him, really loosens up the atmosphere. It’s a real treat to watch his enthusiasm.
He reminds me of a kid in a candy store.
By the way, to people who say that Jeter and Teixeira look lost at the plate, Matt Garza is a very nice pitcher. A jerk, but a good pitcher. It’s not like the Yankees play every game against the HS scrubs.
“what ? you mean when i put whammys on red sox players through the tv it doesn’t work?”
Please do not elaborate
Molina knows how to call a game…
I love nick swisher. A lot. I hope he keeps laughing until guys like jorge catch on. They may also want to watch him hit as he’s currently the only Yankee who doesn’t look baffled by major league pitching.
Speaking of pitching, I hope Wang has wiped the tears from his eyes so he can take a good long look at aj Burnett.
Cone must be fuming listening to Kay babbling on….
“I don’t believe uttering any specific words will alter a pitcher’s outcome…
Really, honestly do you?
What’s all the fuss about?”
Paul, honestly I think I must because I stick to it like glue. Posters here can tell you without question that when someone here says the magic words to break up a no hitter, just about the next pitch thrown elicits a hit. And they can also tell you that when Michael Kay has opened his fat mouth and said the magic words before the 5th inning our pitcher gives up a hit.
Who knows? Baseball players are as superstitious as they come, so why not fans? And hell, we didn’t make up the rules surrounding not saying the magic words, but google it on the internet and you’ll find it everywhere! So someone believes in it.
Maybe if nothing else it makes the you know what last longer.
pete forgot half face wilson from home improvement
S.o.S.: The Two Towers is great, sure, but it has that middle-movie-of-a-trilogy thing… I don’t know. “The Return of the King” is actually the only one I saw in the theater as a new release, I came very late to the party.
Nice baseball game, but I’m afraid the Yankees are still losing on the rolling two-day average.
somebody posted using my name….tsk tsk you’ll get busted and banned
trisha- I just texted a friend.
watching the game?
answer- yeah, any walks.
My friend got the deal.
He is feeling it
Kay SHUT UP.
They tried but Sterling and Kay could not Jinx
Gooden, Wells or Cohn
and SoS Please orCs!
One more inning, and we bring in Swisher. Then Mo! This is sooo exciting!!!
AJ @ 77 pitches now
Way to go big-head (i.e. Michael Kay), jinx AJ Burnett. Did you really have to say it? Now the Rays will lead off with a single to open up the 7th
.
jen – doncha love it!!!!
You bet people get the deal.
Isn’t this a grand ole place to be when the Yanks are winning? Too bad it can’t be as placid when they lose games!!!
if someone can just tell me how to fix the sound on my9, life would be good
Is there any doubt that every time a pitcher has thrown a no-hitter or a perfect game, someone watching or listening on the radio mentioned what was unfolding *during the game*?
People and their silly stuporstitions…
Swish the new 8th inning guy??
We all know how no hitters go. Someone needs to make an outstanding defensive play. Something that comes close to being a hit. We haven’t had one of those yet.
i’m watching my9 (queens) and it’s been fine.
Gee, this is getting interesting.
that should have a
at the end of it
I don’t believe uttering any specific words will alter a pitcher’s outcome…
Really, honestly do you?
What’s all the fuss about?
I also don’t think that stepping on the chalk line when walking on te field will lead to a horrible game or stepping on a crack will brake my mamas back, but all the same, I NEVER do them.
Trisha- key words from your reply: magic and superstition. Yep, I know baseball is full of it…just challenged the believing of it.
Vince, it’s okay to say it once 5 innings have been completed. He did wait for that.
Seriously isn’t it a hoot that someone actually came up with the specific time the words can be “acceptably” uttered?
nick- yeah it is stupid, but it is our stupid superstitions.
Of course it isn’t logical, but so what!
Cano with a horrible AB just now.
Garza didn’t throw anything in the strike zone.
I’m watching on MY9HD, maybe it is hd that is having problems with the sound?
I just realized I spelled break, as brake. wow,
“They tried but Sterling and Kay could not Jinx
Gooden, Wells or Cohn”
Was that Linda Cohn or Roy Cohn?
Does it look like Cano’s stance has opened back up?
ahhh – i’m watching on HD, too…it’s been good so far this inning…just goes out when Cone starts getting on Kay
Maybe, i don’t have HD and no issues at all, everything including Kay unfortunately, is coming in loud & clear.
I’d feel better with another run.
My favorite thing about one of these potential things is that the murmurs start going through the game of baseball, and people start tuning in. Doesn’t matter who you root for. You know that ESPN will pick it up (and probably try to jinx it…), MLB will cut in, etc. It really is exciting. I know that when I’ve tuned it to watch the late innings any time someone here says something “special” is happening in a game, I get so excited for the pitcher and sit on the edge of my seat, almost not able to breathe!
How the hell about when it’s one of your own!!!!!
Wow.
Classic Pete
UPDATE, 8:47 p.m: Seriously, they only had to give up Wilson Betemit to get Nick Swisher? Wilson Betemit? Not Woodrow Wilson, Enrique Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Willie Wilson, Wilson Phillips, Flip Wilson, Mookie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Mr. Wilson from Dennis The Menace, and Wilson the volleyball from Castaway too?
Wilson from Home Improvement
AJ is not getting that pitch all night, and Garza gets it.
Idols over…back to the TV….lets go yanks and knock on wood
I’ll get excited about the no no when it’s 2 outs in the ninth.
From Kim Jones’ blog:
Gabe Kapler had an awesome response to being struck out by Swisher: He now has an answer when people ask him his most embarrassing moment. Also said he had no problem with Swisher’s wanting to keep the ball.
haha players are so far from him.
People need to remember that not everyone is glued to the radio/tv from the start. Their job is to inform the people just tuning in, not pandering to your phobias.
No one getting near AJ.
‘Seriously, they only had to give up Wilson Betemit to get Nick Swisher?’
I know the numbers may look like this was a great deal, but I think the fun of the game really left the clubhouse when we lost Betemit.
I’m not superstitious… I’ll say it.
AJ is pitching…… a great game.
Kay is an ass
If he gives up a hit in the seventh, then you have Swisher and Mo to close it out.
====================================
Hahahahaha
Swisher, the new bridge to Mo
You can say he has no given up no hits, but I hate when people come right out and say that he has a “fill in the blank” hitter.
I don’t like the 5th inning rule at all. Wait til the 9th, haha.
They need this run
jennifer: hey, I don’t mention anything that’s going on either until a certain time.
But I did just text my brother.
Tough part of the line-up coming up for Tampa.
Burnett has a no-hitter going. LOL.
I’d like to see Burnett complete the no-hitter, I’ll settle for him getting the win.
joe mama- You can say that again. All last night he was talking about the old guard and that wasn’t the right thing to do asking for the ball. blah blah blah. Now he goes on spits on superstition. Many ball players are superstitious. they eat the same thing every day etc. Why make fun of people being superstitious?
More from Kim Jones:
The Trop is unbelievably loud tonight. More cowbells than the state of Iowa.
Pregame was interesting. Clearly Wang needs to do what he didn’t in his first start – keep the ball down. He’s been getting encouragement from A.J., who yesterday sent Wang an email in Chinese that read, “preparation for domination.”
A.J. uses a translation feature on his phone. He said Wang is teaching him Chinese, little by little. A.J. has been a really, really good teammate in his short time as a Yankee.
He looks incredible, I think the No Hitter is in the bag.
AJ all alone in the dugout, at least some traditions live on….
Vince, notice I’m not saying it either. Michael Kay is blithering but he did not say the magic words until after the 5th. So he is well aware of shutting his yap until a certain point. However this is the first time I remember him actually doing it!
I remember watching Carl Everett spoil Mike Mussina’s night and just sitting there and crying. If ever there was a heartbreaking moment, that was it. That was absolutely devastating. I’ve never seen it happen in a more dramatic fashion, ever.
I had a ton of work to do tonight and was hoping for a stress-free blowout so I’d only have to focus some attention on the game.
Well, this is a bit different. Go AJ!
why is Kay jinxing Aj? ugh..
this game is ESPN.com’s “cover story”
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

By the way, to people who say that Jeter and Teixeira look lost at the plate, Matt Garza is a very nice pitcher.
It is not just against Garza, it started in the first game against KC.
Well Kay are you happy, you jinxed it. I hope AJ goes an punches you in the face.
THAT SUCKED
This is Kay and Arod’s fault.
Crawford’s ability to foul off pitches hurt. So did the hit.
Time to focus on the win.
AJ’s still the man… He’s our new stopper.. Pen better hold it for him…
Dang.
Kay also keeps on saying it over and over and over
Now he gives up a hit an he goes 9 outs from something special, I hate this guy
Oh well
Let’s just get the win
Hey! Remember me and what I just said. F*cking Michael Kay.
outs, just focus on the outs…
uh – outs, please…take the shut out, whatever…
ok, now just focus on WINNING this game!
So now it’s for the game.
Come on AJ. If anyone can overcome and dig in, he can do it!
Great effort by A.J. to keep it going for so long, now let’s just settle down and get the victory.
This is when it helps to have a veteran like Molina behind the plate, he’s a good, calming influence back there.
Because MK doesn’t believe in jinxes, so he has no respect for them. Nevermind that the players do, and he should respect that – no, its all about him.
I like him less and less.
I said it was a tough part of the lineup. I think if he could have gotten through it he would have done it.
Time to focus on the win. Go out there slow it down. He hasn’t pitched out the stretch the entire game.
I blame society.
what’s with Pena smirking…
Damn! I knew those 3 LOB in the first inning would come back to haunt the Yankees!
That happened quick. Gotta stop it right now. A strikeout or infield pop-up.

Hate him. Classic passive aggressive behavior.
If there is ANY team in the majors that can go from a historic night, to a very, very devastating loss, it’s these Yankees.
focus dude
a plague on michael kays house!
AJ- is all messed up now.
He needs to settle down. He’s rushing.
Nady stinks, no attempt to throw the runner out, Yeah it was a little deep but at least throw it in, don’t lob it.
No no gone – I guess it’s my fault. LOL. Bring in Coke. LOL. We’re gonna lose this one, too.
tie game. hold them here!
Just don’t give up the lead
Both pitchers have still pitched outstanding games.
I bet MK has never played a game of baseball in his life.
A real manager would have gone out to the mound and made Burnett laugh a little after the Longoria hit.
Great I blame it all on Kay
Great I blame it all on Kay
for fu@ks sake, you have to be effin kidding me right now.
Typical
please get a DP here…
Wow do you believe that? He had a no hitter going now he might not even get a win. The offense has got to pick A.J. up after that great effort.
cone is wrong, garza can still lose if he comes back in next inning and gives it up.
“If there is ANY team in the majors that can go from a historic night, to a very, very devastating loss, it’s these Yankees.”
We’re not all this idiotic in MN, I promise.
Sopnas, your LOL’s are more annoying than your screen name. STFU!
I think everyone should blame Canada.
“I blame society.”
I blame people named Nick who live in San Francisco.
Oh well at least our bullpen……erm, never mind.
Yeah MOLINA!!
This is where that first inning comes back to hurt us. Swisher has been great, but his strike out was a HUGE at bat in this game.
wow jose!!!!!
nice snap throw Molina! Let’s get them here Yankees!
Molina frames pitches so well.
Snap throws too.
Bummer. But let’s take this!
great K there
hurray Jose

Nady stinks, no attempt to throw the runner out, Yeah it was a little deep but at least throw it in, don’t lob it.
————————————————————
The goal was to keep the runner on first base, not let him move up hoping to get the runner. Correct play.
Okay game is still tied, gotta get a few runs for AJ. Garza is likely done.
AJ weathers the storm…nice throw Molina!
Let’s get some RUNS!!!!!
Smirk at that Pena
Angel, relax buddy, it was a joke. By the way, Minnesota sucks!
Great play by Molina and Tex.
Now, we gotta get the W for AJ.
Please take that momentum and turn it into a run. How about a Gardner bunt-single, stolen base, single, run
ok – it’s the top of the line up v. JP Howell, right? Doable…
“No no gone – I guess it’s my fault. LOL. Bring in Coke. LOL. We’re gonna lose this one, too.”
You’re not that powerful. LOL.
Game’s not over yet despite what you wish would happen. LOL.

Game’s not over yet despite what you wish would happen. LOL.
That was an unfortunate turn of events but the Yanks need to get a run here and send AJ out there for the 8th
Wow, that pick off was impressive.
Blame Barack Oblama
Just the Yankees’ luck to have their best pitching performance come on the night of our worst offensive showing.
Well….You cant complain about Burnett’s 7th inning really. If you were to tell me before this game that he would only give up 2 runs through 7 innings…I’d be more than pleased against this offense.
If Nady makes a throw to the plate, the runner from first advances to 2nd, no dp
Does Tex bat right-handed tonight? I mean, you don’t take him out, correct?
Patrick: I blame people named Nick who were reading AJ the LoHud Twitter feed between innings.
We score this inning…
AJ pitches the 8th…
Mo the 9th…
We win this thing!
I hope that is all for AJ – he pitched such a clutch game, just outstanding. I’m sorry that he may not get the win, but he sure as heck doesn’t deserve a loss. He’s come up HUGE so far for the Yankees – let him end his night with that half inning. I don’t want to see him struggle and maybe get a loss…..
“Sopnas, your LOL’s are more annoying than your screen name. STFU!”
I’ll say.
Now is the time to win this game. Our top of the order is up, score some runs. Send Burnett in the 8th to face the Rays 7-8-9 hitters, and Mo for the ninth.
What’s wrong with you people? It’s a jinx if a player talks about a no hitter in progress, not an anouncer. The anouncer would only be jinxing it if he said something to the pitcher himself.
Hugeeee….by Brett.
This is where Gardner needs to show why he is in the big leagues. Be scrappy, do whatever you can to get on base. Then, make things happen with your speed.
love gardner
Get little G home
big hit by gardner!!!!!
If they can’t score Gardner now, they deserve to lose.
Yes!!!!
That is the first time I’ve ever seen Gardner hit to the wall in a regular season game.
Gardner showing pop the other way.
Jeter bunt?
gutty hit there from the courageous Brett
Aj pitched a great game, win or lose, but the Yankee bats, other than Swish, are just as impotent as last year.
I knew they needed that run in the 7th. Yanks were not going to win this 2-0.
Here’s hoping the bats wake up so we can win this for AJ.
There we go small ball baby bunt and and get him in
Why isnt he bunting?
“Sopnas, your LOL’s are more annoying than your screen name. STFU!”
I’ll say.
When Al Gore invented the internet, he didn’t know Sopnas or he would have instituted an IQ minimum for it’s use.
i mean c’mon Jeter…let’s do this…you have 4 rings, you are supposed to show up when it counts
^^^ isn’t a “buddy”. lol, i think thats kinda like the calling a woman a girl thing.
C’mon, we need this game. This would be a devastating loss.
Why are we taking the bunt off?????? NNNNNOOOOOOOO
Jeter special right there
Classic Jeterian swing
great job by the captain!!!!
yeah dj!!
oh here we go, get the run in…Burnett more than deserves it
Is anyone warming in the pen?
nice Jetes
At least that improved the batting average with runners in scoring position
MY9 scroll at bottom of screen says The biggest loser will not be seen tonight b/c of the yankee game…lol
Well, that was interesting
thats my boy
go Jete
Eh, this is the worst possible scenario for Tex with his hand.
“Is anyone warming in the pen?”
Please no…unless it’s Mo…
didn’t get punched ut on that close pitch…phew
Clutch TEx.
Nice!
woot woot
It’s Swisher time
Tomorrow they will show their displeasure with “championship cowbells”.
Tex!!!!!
Please don’t waste this… lol.
Yes, I’ll take a sac fly!
Another run would be good though.
If you can’t trust anyone else in the pen, Dynasty, then the Yankees are in trouble. Is AJ at around 112 pitches? Asking for more from him after what he gave tonight would be lunacy……
If you can’t trust anyone else in the pen, Dynasty, then the Yankees are in trouble. Is AJ at around 112 pitches? Asking for more from him after what he gave tonight would be lunacy……
I haven’t been that happy for a sac fly for a long time. Well the 1st inning with Posada’s anyway
Great job by Tex considering his right swing isn’t 100%.
Great job comming back to get the run there by Tex
Burnett is at 93 pitches
Bullpen to blow it. Bank on it.
BTW – GOOOOO MINNY
AJ is at 93 pitches you send him back out for the 8th
Teixeira obviously didn’t get the memo about replicating 2008.
Have to at least consider letting jeter run here. 2 outs, base hit will score him, if not, oh well.
AWWWWWW Sopnas. LOL.
Maybe you can find some other kind of Cnoke to make you feel better now that the Yankees have taken back the lead!. LOL.
Betsy,
I didn’t think his pitch count was that high…
and I don’t trust anyone in that pen except Mo…
it’s the 7-8-9 hitters…i say leave AJ in there.
argh Jorg…who jinxed him??
I’d like to see AJ come back for one batter at a time with Mo ready to go two if necessary.
Just sayin’
It’s been obvious that AJ has been gassed since they showed shots of him sitting hunched over in the dugout with towel in hand between the fifth and sixth innings.
And that’s nothing new. In 2008, here were his splits:
Pitch ERA WHIP
1-15 7.31 1.24
16-30 2.57 0.83
31-45 2.48 1.41
46-60 4.18 1.42
61-75 3.27 1.18
76-90 3.56 1.38
91-105 5.66 2.32
106-120 5.40 1.46
Do you think Girardi is wishing he had a long reliever on the staff last night? If AJ comes out for the 8th, this game may be lost because they didn’t have a long reliever on the staff last night.
lets go A.J get that win you deserve it
AJ must pitch the 8th!
I think you bring out AJ. We will have to trust someone else in this role, BUT with the tough loss on Sunday, and the blowout yesterday, you want to lock in this win tonight. AJ hiccuped last inning, let him go this one, and Mo in the 9th
I meant with towel in his lap…
“If you can’t trust anyone else in the pen, Dynasty, then the Yankees are in trouble.”
Completely agree. However, this is an intense game against the defending AL Champs, and our bullpen is coming off two rough games in a row. Burnett’s at 93 pitches, so I think we can squeeze one more inning out of him. TB has the bottom of their order up.
Yanks lead 3-2, do you bring in Mo now/
Thank you….
nice catch, SWISH – and the right BP to run into
I agree. In 2008, we don’t score in the 8th to take a 3-2 lead. It just doesn’t happen.
I think the days of Mo getting more than three outs are gone forever. But they’re definitely gone for now with him just having come back from an injury.
Oh, why did I think he had over 100? Nevermind – I got bad info – thanks!
Betsy – Garza was at 113
I saw Swisher smiling as he made that catch how dare he
“Swisher and Mo to close it out.” haha …. nice!
>And that’s nothing new. In 2008, here were his splits:
I don’t think those splits are unique when you get into the 90-120 pitch range.
Cone is big on respect
BURNETT IS A FLIPPIN HERO!
The guy is gold. And an awesome teammate no question.
104 pitches great job AJ
Great inning by AJ…
There’s our 8th inning solution: Every starter goes 8 innings!
Marvelous game by Burnett. Garza was almost as good. Now score two runs and let Rivera close it out.
Yanks lead 3-2 going into the ninth. Do we bring in Mo now, or let Burnett finish?
I vote let him finish. We need the bullpen to rest for tomorrow.
Round of applause to AJ. Well done.
Crap i leave for a little bit and Burnett blows the no hitter. Blame this one on me fellas. Should have known after the 4th that he would be flirting with one. Next time i wont put on my gloves and fight my kids. This is more important. I mean i picked him to win the CY Young this year.
Boy, what a stark contrast from last night’s debacle. A very well played game on both sides.
This is what baseball is all about.
It would be nice to get at least one run here but AJ is done for the night bring in MO
Insurance run needed
Insurance run please…
cano’s stance is open again
What’s the difference between pitching from the wind-up and pitching from the stretch?
Burnett exhibited some real mental toughness with the 1-2-3 inning there. Nice way to put the seventh behind him. Now Girardi can bring in Rivera in the 9th with the lead intact.
That is what we want.
Why the love for Marte? Aside from a very strong 2007 in only 45 innings, he’s been a mediocre relief pitcher since 2004. He hasn’t even been good against lefties since 2007. If the Yankee braintrust can’t figure out why and make the necessary adjustment(s), he’s a wasted roster spot and a liability every time he comes into the game.
Now lets give Mo some breathing room so he canclose it out for our ACE A.J
NICE Melky
MELKY!!!!!!
Put him at the top of the order!
Melky participating too
Melky v Gardner continues!

PAT M, that was vintage a Jim Bouton/David Cone type performance.
I sure hope Pena knows how to bunt.
That wasn’t a pretty bunt attempt at all. C’mon kid, gotta kid this down.
Pel,
I agree with you that those splits are hardly unique when you get into the 90-120 pitch count range. But tell that to David Cone or Michael (Clueless) Kay.
Navarro touched that
I’d like to take a commercial break here to mention my pure delight at Beckett getting a 6-game suspension for throwing at Abreu’s head – Abreu, who wouldn’t hurt a damned fly!
Looks like fortune isn’t smiling on RSN right now!
swisher and mo to close it out haha- classic pete abe right there.
I was wrong
FIRE MICHAEL KAY!!!
Please.
“The Rays didn’t get the scouting report on Brett Gardner as he is both gritty and gutty.”
HAHA Good work Pete.
did all these rays fans used to be yankees fans before last season – i dont remember the trop ever having more rays fans than yankee fans.
that Upton kid is irritating…
No, he doesn’t know how to bunt.
Interesting that Cone is contrasting Garza to AJ – AJ is now the cool one (as opposed to his younger days) and Garza a bit more emotional. Two times the Yankees needed the man to come through and two times he did – what an effort tonight. Man, I would love to score another run here…….and, again, Pena can’t bunt, lol
“Abreu, who wouldn’t hurt a damned fly!”
Isn’t that the truth.
Hell, he wouldn’t even take on an unarmed wall according to most comments around here last year, lol.
Upton runs down Pena’s fly that no one else would be close to catching.
That’s what speed in the outfield does for you.
Should Cano have made it to third?
Ah! Pena needs to get a bunt down. Why can’t we ever find a utility guy who can do the fundamental things needed? Jeez.
“Hell, he wouldn’t even take on an unarmed wall according to most comments around here last year, lol.”
It comes down to GG
That was not pretty you need to get that runner to third
Well it up to the Gardner
How do you defend guts and grit?
I CANNOT believe that we can’t get Cano HOME….aaargh!!!
If we loose this game lets all look to that inning
cowbells must DIE
I hope all those people ringing the cow bells get carpal tunnel syndrome. I wonder if they could sue the rays for handing out the bells?
just wondering why damon is not PH for BG?
GARDNER IS UNBELIEVABLE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111
Everytime I watch a game against the Rays I get that SNL more cowbell skit stuck in my head
BRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
Bad break, should have been 2 runs. Carl ticked off.
gardner!!!!!!!!!!
just put my foot on my mouth there
grittttttttttt
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! GGBG, rules!!!!!
hehe nice
Alright! Nicely done, Brett!
The Grit the GRIT it cant be stopped!!!!
Yeah Gardner!!!!
Upton couldn’t get that one!!!!
Brett’s the man!
GG comes through.
damon has the flu i believe…
the yankee minor league system just does not send players up who can bunt.
yankees offense right now = swisher and gardner. Who woulda thunk?
There’s my answer: you neither defend gutty, nor gritty.
“If we loose this game lets all look to that inning”
Good thing we won’t have to worry about that, hey?
Nice of Gardner to make sure Melky couldn’t score!
little G coming through
brett gardner saying look at me
Wooohhoooo! Nice Brett. Good job.
Great at-bat for Gardner!!! He fouled off pitches until he got one he could drive and drive it he did. This man is growing before our eyes.
how in the world is upton mad that the ball bounced over the wall? Did he actually think he could throw out the lead run? More likely that the ball bouncing the wall saved them a run.
What are the rays thinking? Playing shallow against our biggest power hitter of the preseason? Must have not gotten the memo.
What a great job of hitting by Gardner! Last year, he would have struck out on 3 pitches. This year he hangs in there after getting behind 0-2, fouls off a few balls, then shoots a rope over the head of Upton “Road Runner.”
Vince, you are right, Pena has got to get that bunt down. I thought Girardi was going to stress the fundamentals this year.
Garner has now *bounced* a hit over the wall, but when will he get one over on the fly????
come on jeter break their back
I wonder how long it’s going to take for the Yankee haters who made Ellsbury out to be the second coming of Willie Mays and Gardner to be a Class C prospect to acknowledge that Gardner is at least a comparable player to Ellsbury.
if upton was playing further back he would have caught it
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH BABY
THE CAPTAIN!!!
JETER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice!! 7-2 Take that cowbells.
It’s OUTTA here…yeah!!
It’s OUTTA here…yeah!!
JETERRRRRRR’S back baby
CAPTAIN JETER WITH THE HAMMER AND NAIL!
El Capitain!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AJ likes it!
gardner surprises. if he does that more, he’d be an interesting player.
THE CAPTAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSSS
Way to go, Capitan!
Jeter!
GB, That is exactly who I thought of ( Jim Bouton ) tonight….Old # 56 had a more powerful windup….But had similar stuff……Derek goes yard
Way to selfishly take away a save from Mo.
Oh wait, that wasn’t Arod, it was the Captain!
That was huge
SOPRAS now on suicide watch…
sorry for the dupe post
Welcome back Jetes!
And Jeter just shafted his old friend Rivera and cost him a save.
Great job tonight from the top of the order.
Ya know, I hate that rule. I know it’s the discretion of the umpire wether they “feel” he would score on the ground rule, but he obviously would have. Why not score him thre?Well, Jeter hits one out, so it doesn’t much matter, but I still hate that ruling.
With a five run lead, do you think Swisher is available to pitch on back to back nights?
Thank you Derek. And that should ice it
So now Mo can’t get a save…i’m sure he’ll deal
Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Swisher pitched the 9th?
Just maybe the 9th inning strategy has changed now, thanks to the Captain. Excellent!
Do we see Mo?
Do you still send Mo in? 7-2 is not a save situation.
I say, send in Swisher, he needs the work.
“how in the world is upton mad that the ball bounced over the wall? Did he actually think he could throw out the lead run? More likely that the ball bouncing the wall saved them a run.”
Dave,
I think he thought he should have caught it.
nice bounce back win tonight
What’s especially nice about this little rally, is that the big hits by Gardner and Derek is that they were both with 2 out – something they had problems with all last year.
I give the game over to Marte now.
The game is on MY9, that means no postgame coverage aside from Girardi’s interview
We don’t get to here AJ after his awesome game
IF UPTON was playing further back, he wouldnt catch almost every ball to the outfield.
ROFL @ JAY
Damn Jeter, padding his stats when we already have the lead.
I know Jeter hasn’t been hitting the ball well the past few games but this year already we’ve seen Jeter drive the ball in ways he just couldn’t last year after getting hit in the hand by Cabrera.
He hit that ball with authority the other way. Very nice to see him have the game he has had tonight.
wow! the wind must be blowing out in the dome
This blog is so pleasant when we are winning. Trolls are no where to be found.

==============================
Gardner’s having a great game at the plate, but Ellsbury is a much better outfielder. No comparison in the “getting a jump” department.
panayioti April 14th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Poor Jeter, looks lost at the plate.
I admit, since I’m giving someone else a hard time, that Gardner had a nice AB. But why was Upton playing at little league depth?
Mo still gets a save opp, because bruney is in
SOS – YOUR probably right but the guy cant catch every single fly ball. If he plays shallow enough to eliminate almost every blooper, he is sacrificing the balls that hit close to the wall. He does play too shallow i think.
Burnett was great today. We are gonna see more of these types of games
Jeter!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joey- Stick on the radio. Suzy Q might have him on.
“Way to selfishly take away a save from Mo.
Oh wait, that wasn’t Arod, it was the Captain”
Nick,
Its not arods fault. Its Meachum for sending the runners home on Jetes homerun. Good job Meach.
MN John
It’s not up to the discretion of the umpire. If a ball bounces over the wall it’s a grounds rule double and baserunners advance two bases. Fan interference however, is umpire’s discretion. If a fan reaches over and touches the ball, the umpire can use his judgment about whetehr a run would have scored or not.

By the way, I can’t say enough about Girardi’s managing, overall. The guy is pure energy and plays musical chairs with players at will, but with smarts behind it. I like it so much more than the predictable Torrean march of the zombies.
gardner has bought some slack with his huge game today…hopefully some people on here can stop saying he is a AAA player at best, at least for a few days!!!
ahaha suck on that rays. victory is sweet
is Bruney this sharp or are the Rays playing dead?
Winning is so much better than losing! Nuke Laloosh.1!
“I wonder how long it’s going to take for the Yankee haters who made Ellsbury out to be the second coming of Willie Mays and Gardner to be a Class C prospect to acknowledge that Gardner is at least a comparable player to Ellsbury.”
Whoa there, Cowboy, let’s see where he is at in July and August before we start comparing him to Ellsbury.
Bruney throwing seeds…
Man the Yankees needed this win. This is Yankee baseball right here. Keep it up tomorrow night and win the series. Two straight series wins going into our home opener would be huge. We just need A-Rod back soon and Wang to figure things out. I’m still ultra confident about this season.
Bruney not messing around here

Exactly. Same type of power fastball and big power curve. Burnett has a much smoother delivery. Bouton’s delivery had to have cost him dearly, though. What a four man rotation, though. Ford, Stottlemyre, Bouton and Downing. Two lefties, two righties, two finesse pitchers and two power pitchers.
Big Joe
Apologize to Bruney
Yankees win!!!!!!
Ball Game!
wow bruney what an inning!!!!
Joey, that sucks – YES does a great job with their post-game show. ch 9? Not so much.
Wow, K’s the side. 1 ball. Was that Mo in disguise?
There’s a nice emotional-rollercoaster feel-good win for you.
Let’s not forget the dusting and striking out of Longoria. I think that was my personal highlight.
“This blog is so pleasant when we are winning. Trolls are no where to be found.”
Jen, equally pleasing is that Yankee posters are pleasant when we are winning!

Poor Jeter, looks lost at the plate.
I admit, since I’m giving someone else a hard time, that Gardner had a nice AB. But why was Upton playing at little league depth?
========================
Because they were banking on Gardner not being able to drive a pitch.
Susan talking to Brett.
Whose pitching for the rays tomorrow?
This was a fun game. Let’s do it again tomorrow.
GREAT GAME – good job everybody!
Meanwhile does anyone think the Rays might play Gardner a little deeper in the outfield next game? He might have won that game for the Yanks with those 2 doubles. Huge.
struck out the side on 10 pitches. Bruney was on fire. Obviously he is worried about Swisher taking his job away.
it’s Andy P. vs Andy S.(onnanstine) tomorrow. day game, i think.
that was superb pitching- bruney just looked unhittable. wow
theeeeeee yankeeeees win!!! burnett, gardner, swisher and el capetan were awesome tonight. great gutty win.
S.o.S.: Meacham? I think he’s coaching 3rd base for some team in Orc AA league.
Great way to answer tonight! Would have loved to see a 1-0 shutout by AJ, but coming back like this after last night was huge. Just survive this opening trip, Yanks, and let’s start a run in the new digs!
Wednesday: LHP Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.29) vs. RHP Andy Sonnanstine (0-1, 9.64), 4:08, YES, WCBS 880
bruney was tossing fiyahhh
Big, big win tonight. Burnett, the stopper, just pitches a gem, and the offense has some timely clutch hitting to open the game wide open, couldn’t ask for anything else.
For those not counting Bruney strikes out the side on 10 pitches against 3 outstanding hitters.
pete I know you don’t need an “atta boy” post but the updates are hilarious tonight. “gardner is the new swisher only grittier and guttier.” gold jerry, gold!
AJ is gunna win 20 games this year, he has taken the next step we talked about this winter. Bruney looking SHARP.
Oh, and employment law sucks.
And this is why you can’t judge teams based on one game – pitching, pitching, pitching.
Unbelievably great performance from AJ, offense looked good and Bruney looked dominant. Wow……..I’m on cloud 9.
Great ending by Bruney to strike out all three batters. A sweet victory tonight and the bounce back performance that the team needed.
This kind of performance is what A.J. Burnett can bring to the table. You can’t teach the talent that this guy has.
This win feels good.
Sure looks like Swisher,Gardner and Cabrera are showing up whenever they get in the lineup.
Stay healthy AJ!
This staff has the chance to be something special once Wang gets straightened out.
Think about it – your #2 starter is just horrible two times through the rotation – burns out the pen and you bring AJ Burnett to the mound and he’s just unbelievable.
AJ threw around 40% curve balls tonight and threw the pitch for strikes 57% of the time.
If AJ does that just go home because you’re not hitting him. If AJ throws his curve for strikes more than 40% of the time he’s extremely difficult to beat. Over 50% – he’s gong to be coming close to no hitting the other team.
What an asset to have him when he’s throwing this way.
Ch. 9? Does that mean we get to here Russ Salzburg and Joel Sherman? Ugh
“Exactly. Same type of power fastball and big power curve. Burnett has a much smoother delivery. Bouton’s delivery had to have cost him dearly, though. What a four man rotation, though. Ford, Stottlemyre, Bouton and Downing. Two lefties, two righties, two finesse pitchers and two power pitchers.”
Yeah, but not good enough to take out the 64 Cardinals, unfortunately. Downing actually stunk in that series, and Whitey was too old, and too hurt, to do any good. At least we took em to 7 games.

Thank God No Matsui… I think he needs a few days off. Watch, the yanks come out swinging tonight and have more pep in the lineup…
I Made this post earlier today, and ill stick by it tomorrow… Make Matsui Ride the Pine until swisher and nady stop hitting… LETS GO YANKS
This was one of the better games that Ive seen in a while.
Nick,
I know Meachum is no longer here. Doesnt stop arod not to be blame and it wont stop some blaming Meach. They will always find a way to be part of the blame.
Good night fellas. Not many Orcs out tonight. Hope for the same minana.
upton crawford and langoria – 10 pitches, 3 k’s – only brian bruney!!
It’s amazing how the team can look so horrible one day and really solid the next. Hopefully Wang will figure out his problems against Cleveland but they better have a long man up for that series
Bruney was throwing gas. He has established himself as the best pitcher in the pen right now not named Mariano.
Tampa needs to re-do that scouting report that says Brett can’t drive the ball. They got burned twice on that.
I was against the Yankees signing Burnett to such a big deal, especially when I thought it would mean they couldn’t get Teixeira. He’s doing his best to make me look like a really happy idiot. That was exactly what the Yankees needed.
He was the guy I was most worried about in the rotation, but getting off to a good start is going to make things really easy for him. I’m going to the game on Sunday and I can’t wait to see him pitch in person.
Between Wang needing to get it together and A-Rod coming back, this team can still be a lot better. The games the Yankees have lost have been 3 bad starts by CC and Wang and a lead blown in the 8th inning.
Mad love for AJ, my Captain, and everyone else who made this victory possible. Honorable mention to the increasingly awesome BJ Upton.
FYI–Kruk vehemently argued against the Beckett suspension a few minutes ago on Baseball Tonight. (I’m sure everyone is shocked.) But he did say Beckett should have been ejected, and since that was in the first inning, I’m not sure how much difference there would be. In fact, that probably would have been even worse for Boston as they wouldn’t have been able to prepare for the missed start.
More importantly than all that–great win for the Yankees tonight. I think we’ll be enjoying many games like this throughout the season.
after aj’s pitching,my highlight of the game was swisher taking garza’s high inside heat without even looking at garza and then taking him deep again without looking at him.
yankee swagger is coming back.

They got them into the WS when nobody gave them a chance against Baltimore and Chicago. Ford’s circulation issues in his arm had already started and Bouton was spectacular in game three. Stottlemyre was a rookie and had to duel Bob Gibson in 3 games, fighting him to a draw. Downing was just flat out worn down. He exerted a lot of effort and was smaller than Ford. They still almost pulled it out.
Larkin, Williams and Ripken on MLB Network just said Beckett shouldn’t have been suspended either. All the “experts” seem to be in agreement on this.
No postgame for me since I got MY9 as part of Extra Innings and it went off as soon as the game was over.
Oh well.
It sucks that Bruney had to pitch in a blowout, but thats what happens when the rest of our pen is gassed outside of MO.
All good though, atleast MO got the night off.

This was one of the better games that Ive seen in a while.
===================================
It was a joy. Classic pitching duel.
John Kruk should stick to what he does best: eating doughnuts.
Sox out to a 3-0 lead and still in the first inning
“Tampa needs to re-do that scouting report that says Brett can’t drive the ball. They got burned twice on that.”
joe from long island-
i think that may be what b.j. upton was thinking when he punched the wall
Does Swisher get a standing O during his first home AB?
“yankee swagger is coming back.”
Good pitching will do that. If AJ pitches like this – nevermind against one of your chief rivals in the AL East in their home park – it’s going to cover up a lot of defects on this team.
Not too many difficult plays for the defense to make tonight.
This is one of the main reasons they went after AJ so strongly. His track record against AL east teams is hard to believe.
Walks into tampa after they score 15 and just completely makes them look silly.
That’ll add some swagger.
Thanks, Carl. I’ll be here all week… (Actually not.)
Despite the win, though, can we all agree that the Yankees need a long reliever on staff?
And a question. Did Bruney always top out at 91-92? I thought he used to throw gas…
pat- I wonder what they would have said last year when Joba was suspended.
Funny how different the articles are when it is a sox as opposed to a yankee. Look at the poll question.
Awesome game
I have to eat crow. I was against the Burnett signing. He’s proving so far he’s not another Carl Pavano/signing.
The MY9 postgame sucks
This was the best game of the year and we don’t even get indepth coverage of it. Guess we just have to read quotes in tomorrow’s papers… sigh.
Wow, the Yankees made the Rays look slow and unathletic!
Of course, doesn’t everybody look that way when the opposing pitcher isn’t letting anybody get on base?
Swisher will most def get a standing O.
Joe Mama,
You said you’re surprised the Yankees can look so putrid one day and so good the next.
I think it’s like the old saying — momentum is the next day’s starting pitcher.
If that had been CC or AJ who threw at a batter once time had been called, the talking heads would be calling for his head.
I hate to sound paranoid, but we all know it.
CB, I’ll say again, your Schilling comparison back in Novemeber was right on the screws…..Love that arm
Oh yeah, and Swish taking one up and in and then knocking the next pitch into the seats. SWISH that!!!
Jay,
Where do you get 91-92 from on Bruney? The Rays station(Extra innings blackout) had Bruney consistently 94, and hit 96 a couple times.
Joe- It isn’t paranoid it is a fact.
new post: Nady injured
Rumor has it when Gammons saw AJ throw high in the strike zone to Longoria he made his wife immediately go reheat his soup because “it wasnt hot enough”
“The Rays didn’t get the scouting report on Brett Gardner as he is both gritty and gutty. Huge leadoff double there.” Pete is hilarious
“Despite the win, though, can we all agree that the Yankees need a long reliever on staff?”
Made that very observation as soon as it was announced that the Yanks were breaking camp without one.
Nady has hurt his elbow….the same one he had TJ surgery on. Not good. Although it may be scar tissue irritation.
For all those media experts that said Joba should be the set up man for Mo.
I say you have to be looney not to beleive in Bruney.
Bruney was throwing gas he hit 95 9
Matsuzaka is out of the game in Oakland he did his best Wang impression and got pulled after giving up 5 runs
Mark in Tampa and Joe Mama,
I’ve rewound the DVR and I’m looking at the speed shown on the My9 coverage now.
I’ll let you know what it said as soon as I’m done…
Mark in Tampa and Joe Mama,
As promised, I watched every one of Bruney’s pitches. (Of course, there weren’t many.)
But the fastest speed Bruney hit in his inning of work, according to the My9 speed gun coverage was 92 — with most of his fastballs coming in at 91 and his last one at 90.
Please confirm for yourself on YES replay.
Did MLB Extra Innings or other coverage show a faster speed for Bruney’s pitches?
All I know is that the YES cameras have been funky for a while, like I have been seeing fastballs that have been registering at 60 mph, I wouldn’t be surprised if the My9 radars for some reason were iffy too.
Ro-bin-son (jonR),
I don’t have any reason to believe the My9 speed reading was accurate. I just was surprised that Bruney was (apparently) topping out at a very mediocre speed versus what I thought he had been topping out at. The fact that he was blowing people away would further suggest that the My9 speed reading was off for that matter, too.
Could anybody =report what the speeds were shown as being for Bruney on MLB Extra Innings or any other coverage that there may have been?
I came across this in a Det paper that Marcus Thames is on the trading block,is he worth going after to play CF & add depth to the OF position…given a chance the guy can lumber
