This release from the Yankees:

The New York Yankees will inaugurate Yankee Stadium with its first-ever regular season game on Thursday, April 16 at 1:05 p.m. vs. the Cleveland Indians.

Gates will open to fans with valid tickets beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Yankees are asking fans to be situated in their seats by 12:00 p.m. in advance of pregame ceremonies. Please budget ample time when planning your trip and be sure to consider using public transportation.

Ceremonies will begin at 12:10 p.m. with the West Point Marching Band performing John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March” and “Stars and Stripes Forever” in a tribute to the original Yankee Stadium’s opener on April 18, 1923, when Sousa performed on field with the Seventh Regiment Band prior to the game. The West Point Band will also play the “Armed Forces Medley.”

More than 40 distinguished Yankees alumni, such as Whitey Ford, Rich “Goose” Gossage, Reggie Jackson and Willie Randolph, will be introduced on-field, followed by baseline introductions for both teams. (A complete list of attending alumni may be found at the end of this release). Yankees Hall-of-Famer Yogi Berra will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Colors will be presented by a joint FDNY and NYPD color guard. After a 75-foot-by-150-foot American flag is unfurled in the outfield by West Point Cadets, Kelly Clarkson, winner of the first season of American Idol and two Grammy Awards, will sing the national anthem. At the conclusion of the anthem, the 174th Fighter Wing, an Air Force unit based in Syracuse, N.Y., will fly over the Stadium in F-16C Flying Falcons. The unit executing the flyover returned to the United States last August after supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom at Balad Air Force Base in Iraq.

The home plate and pitching rubber to be used in Thursday’s game is the same set that was used in the final game at the original Yankee Stadium. Following the game, the items will be dug up and placed in the Yankees Museum, located in Yankee Stadium near Gate 6.

All fans in attendance will receive an inaugural season commemorative pin.

For information on parking, please visit www.baseball-parking.com or call (866) 330-7275.

They got Arroyo! The long awaited Arroyo homecoming is here.

  2. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

They got it down to the second. Hopefully the lights won’t go out and delay the game. Oh wait we don’t play in a dome. :)

  3. CENTRAL CT YANKEE April 15th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

It’s good to See Joe Girardi attending the festivities!

  4. Kara April 15th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

It’s always good to see Tino! I worshiped him growing up :)

  5. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

central and Dave Eiland. I was a little nervous they would snub the event.

  6. Jeter in LF April 15th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

So Yogi is throwing out the first pitch?

  7. Eric April 15th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Think I need to be waiting on line at 10 if I want to get into monument park?

  8. Josh April 15th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Kelly Clarkson, really? Kelly bleepin Clarkson? What a horrible, horrible choice. The answer is Ronan Tynan (sp?) and that’s it. Anything else is an insult. If I had a ticket, I’d want my money back.

  9. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint April 15th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Love Tino. Always had a little crush on him.
Tomorrow will be a action packed day

  10. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Eric earlier. Gates open at 10 there will likely be other people there waiting. If you are going to more games, I might suggest waiting.

  11. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

What a great win by the Yankees.
This was a statement series. The statemnt is dramatically made by THE NEW YORK YANKEES!
    We’re back, baby!

  12. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Josh-I don’t hate Kelly Clarkson. And I think Ronan Tynan takes a bit too long.

  13. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Josh- agreed awful decision. I would have loved if Billy Joel, or someone like that.

  14. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

By the way, glad Yogi is throwing out the first pitch.

  15. m April 15th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    Not liking the Kelly Clarkson.

    But loving the Yogi.

  16. Kara April 15th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Billy Joel would’ve been amazing…or maybe a Bernie/Springsteen duet type deal.

  17. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story April 15th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

I like the exactness of the schedule, but it will be tempered festivities for me.

  18. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

jennifer-Well of course Bily Joel would be better. But then again, not many people beat Billy Joel.

  19. Eric April 15th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

I will plan on being on line at 9:30. That should be OK. I will definitely be at many games this year, but its opening day on the first day, and I want to see it. I think its worth the wait.

  20. PJH® April 15th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Kelly Clarkson complainers, it could be worse. Could be the cast of some stupid broadway musical or something like. Not a perfect choice but not Mets bad.

  21. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    Well, Springsteen would.

  22. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

River Ave. Blues had an interesting thought – Frank Catalanotto (I hope I spelled that right.) He’s kind of unemployed now. I remember him as a good lefthand hitter, who can play corner OF and 1B.

Melky better measure up, or he’s out.

  23. vin April 15th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

It’ll be nice to see my man Charlie Hayes. lol

How long has Griffey been on good terms with the Yanks? There was animosity there for awhile, no?

  24. BR April 15th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

I have to admit, I am a bit dissapointed. I was hoping that Mussina would have made an appearance. I hope George Steinbrenner makes an on-field appearance as well.

  25. RonH April 15th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

    Can’t wait to get there!

  26. Laura - Plug it in, change the world! April 15th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

“River Ave. Blues had an interesting thought – Frank Catalanotto”

So has everyone on this blog. The minute the news broke about Nady, many on the blog were pushing for “the Cat”. It sounds good, but if he’s on the decline as they say, I don’t see the point.

  27. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

BR-I heard Big Stein was going to be there. I’m sure they’ll introduce him.
Joe from Long Island-Yeah, that was brought up not too long ago. What’ll it take to land him, and how have his recent years been?

  28. Mark April 15th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

    Man the Padres suck lol

  29. Laura - Plug it in, change the world! April 15th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

“I hope George Steinbrenner makes an on-field appearance as well.”

Not likely. They say that George is confined to a wheelchair now. I don’t know that he’d want to be out there like that.

  30. bdog375 April 15th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Does anyone know if the opening ceremonies will be aired on MLB TV?

  31. Kara April 15th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I would love a Mussina sighting! He’s always been one of my favorites (I think it comes from living in Orioles territory for most of my life).

  32. pat April 15th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Leave Melky alone. Girardi is using him for defensive purposes over Swisher, Nady and Damon and he’s hiting enough to hold his own. He has a role and a place on this team.

  33. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Or we could have had Michael Buffer announcing the players, had boxes of fire and handed out cowbells. But that doesn’t happen in Major League parks, oh wait…

  34. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Yankees got their mojo going now. This is how games are going to be won. If you have pitching, all of a sudden late RBI’s become much more dramatic, and voila! Here’s the result.
Great, great win. I am PUMPED!

  35. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Sheff up with the bases loaded, none out – and GIDP.

    He’s really looked cooked.

  36. vin April 15th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Thanks for the schedule, Pete… now I know what time my “dentist appointment” will be tomorrow.

  37. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Joe from Long Island-Did it score a run?

  38. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

And if it did what’s the score now?

  39. Boston Dave April 15th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

I’ll be vacationing in Jamaica but I’ll do my best to get back to the hotel room to see the opener on mlb.tv !!

    can’t wait…

  40. Mark April 15th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

    Rangers winning 3-1 :)

  41. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Teixeiramvp – yeah, a run scored. Now 2-0, Mets over Padres.

  42. Boston Dave April 15th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

“River Ave. Blues had an interesting thought – Frank Catalanotto”

If nobody else in baseball was willing to give him $400k to play, it’s probably a sign.

If the Yanks do sign him it’s low risk so no big deal.

I’d prefer they wait until teams start dumping salaries and they can get an impact player instead of filler.

  43. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

    Devils up 2-0. :-)
Ugh, going to have to miss the game tomorrow! :-( But I’ll get to see the encore.

  44. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I’m calling the Marlins as the one real deal team of all the surprise starts.
Padres may do better than expected (not exactly difficult) but nowhere near the playoffs.

  45. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) April 15th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

love the win today, time to crush the pathetic hopes of the indians :)

  46. wood is good April 15th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I’ve worked with major record labels, recording studios, and more musicians than I wanna think about! Believe it or not, Kelly has a pretty great voice that doesn’t need studio trickery. PLUS she’s a really decent person, very nice. I’m okay with the choice.

And c’mon, people–don’t you think Ronan’s gonna make an appearance during the 7th inning stretch? Yeesh, of COURSE!!

  47. Andy Hawkin's Ghost April 15th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Wait a second, no Mel Hall, Alvaro Espinosa or ANDY HAWKINS?!!! Though rumors are spreading that Dave LaPoint will be smuggled in hiding in a laundry cart.

Clarkson has pipes and is always respectful (or absurd interpretations). She’ll be fine. Though it would have been nice to get someone of the Aretha Franklin caliber to belt it out.

Nobody will remember in a week.

  48. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Boston Dave – right, that’s the point. I would love for Melky to step up, but if he doesn’t, you have to look at options. Down at AAA, you have Austin Jackson, who needs to play everyday; John Rodriguez, who appears to be a career minor leaguer; and Shelly – been there/done that. That’s why, I think, that if Melky can’t get it done in even a limited role, then they will go outside the organization.

  49. KO April 15th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

I’m feelin a sweep against the Indians. I can’t wait for the Yankees to feast on Pavano. That will be an especially fun game to watch.

  50. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Joe from Long Island-I still want to see AJax. He had a good ST and has had a great start, why not try him vs. Major Leaguers?

  51. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Swisher getting some love on the espn poll.

  52. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Man, Daniel Murphy is killing LF – just threw to Reyes, the cutoff man, on a hit to short LF, allowing the runner from second to score. Looking at the replay, 1)the runner was not yet at 3rd, and 2)he ignored the 3B, the normal cutoff man, and threw to SS Reyes, who was further away from the play.

By rights, the runner should have been dead at home. Now 2-1, Mets.

  53. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

LOL, it would be sad but so funy if Pavano shuts out the Yankees…

  54. Ed - Swisher is awesome!! April 15th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

“He had a good ST and has had a great start, why not try him vs. Major Leaguers?

    He’s.Not.Ready!

  55. Josh April 15th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I mean, if you’re gonna get Kelly Clarkson, why not Lil’ Wayne and his vocoder for the seventh…maybe Taylor Swift doing “New York, New York” to end it?

  56. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

It really sounds like Murphy’s an waful defender. What I don’t get is Manuel saying they need better OF defense, then putting Sheffield out there, who’s an embarassing OFer defensively. No logic there at all.

  57. Mark April 15th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

KO: I can’t wait for the reception Pavano gets we should all start chanting thief when he takes the mound..

  58. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Ed-We’ll never know if we don’t try him.

  59. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Tex – they want him to learn more about hitting in AAA. That’s what all the coaches say, including Reggie. Can’t say that I disagree. Next year, he will be real competition for a starting role.

  60. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Joe from Long Island-Fair enough. By the way, waful in my prev. post should be awful.

  61. gayle April 15th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

I am hoping we have Bernie come onto CF and play Take Me OUt to the Ballgame for the 7th inning stretch of course after the Yankee tradition of God Bless America.

ALso hoping the Yankees realized the error of their ways and the girls with the ratty voice is no longer doing the big screen games

  62. Ed - Swisher is awesome!! April 15th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

“Ed-We’ll never know if we don’t try him.”

he will turn out like Justin Upton then. low obp and avg.

  63. bodhisattva April 15th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Melky will field well and hit well. He just needs to get into games.

  64. Ed - Swisher is awesome!! April 15th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

    ….and high Ks.

  65. Kara April 15th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

I’d appreciate it if the YMCA was missing tomorrow, although all signs point to them continuing the lameness.

  66. AROD fan April 15th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

agree with kelly clarkson complaints. They could have chosen almost anyone, and she is it??

  67. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

gayle- Hope so. Otherwise I might call the Yankees and ask them to remove her from ingame updates.

  68. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Ed-Fair enough. I just didn’t get why you wouldn’t want to try it. If all the coaches are agreed that he needs more practice, fine.

I was hoping we’d have Bernie pull a Jimi Hendrix and riff out the National Anthem. Bernie’s Take Me Out brings tears to my eyes. It recalls a simpler world – a world we have lost.

  70. jennifer April 15th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Watching the Mets, my god those patches are hideous.

  71. DT April 15th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

    stop picking on Kelly Clarkson!

she was nice enough to step in at the last minute when Roseanne Barr canceled.

  72. GreenBeret7 April 15th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Baltimore’s offense took a big hit today. The DL’d Melvin Mora for a strained hamstring.

  73. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

bodhisattva-I have no confidence in Melky Cabrera. Last year was the year to put up or shut up for Melky, with Gardner coming up right behind him. He couldn’t and hit 249 or something with a ridiculously low number of RBI’s. Melky is a backup at best, which is a shame because I used to really like him.

  74. wood is good April 15th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Who’s going to be the PA announcer?

Here’s one moment I can’t wait for: the introduction of our own Rajah of Rehab, CARRRRRRRL PAVAAAAAAANOOOOOOO!

  75. Bronx Jeers April 15th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Ahh Kelly Clarkson not so bad. Could be a lot worse. They could have the Skycoasters do it.

I’m no fan but I saw her on SNL a few weeks back. She had some soul going on. She’s real curvy too. Like a real person.

  76. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

    God bless him.

Who comes up to replace Nady on the roster?

  78. Count of Montefusco April 15th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

“…Dave Eiland, Ed Figueroa, John Flaherty, Whitey Ford…”

One of these things is not like the other

  79. PAT M April 15th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Watching the Mets right now as they play in their new ballpark……They have lost all identity, as their owner biult a knockoff of old Ebbitt’s Field….Jackie Robinson is an American Icon indeed, but the Rotunda is all about him and the ballpark is all about the Brooklyn Dodgers….Shea was a dump for the past 35 years, but all they have is that stupid red apple from their past….

  80. pat April 15th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

“Melky is a backup at best, which is a shame because I used to really like him.”

You can really like backups. Every team needs them. Melky defensively is looking better than all 3 starters right now. Which may be more an indictment of the starters than praise of Melky but it it what it is.

  81. Bo knows April 15th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Just a guess GB7, your initials are really WEB, right? Those Janpanese codes were the giveaway.

  82. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

pat-Not exactly what I meant. I meant I used to think he could be a great hitter and a fixture on the Yanks, but he disappointed me. He’s an excellent defensive backup who can get into hot streaks.

  83. KO April 15th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Mark, you’re right, Pavano’s reception will be classic. The booing will be worse than the worst booing anyone has ever received by a Yankee crowd I might imagine. Pavano is one of the most hated ex-Yankees ever I think. And as for some1′s comment about a possible shutout thrown by Pavano, the only way he is giving up no runs is if he fakes an injury before then and doesn’t pitch.

  84. tampayank April 15th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Doesn’t Clarkson pitch for the other team? not like it matters but that’s what some people say

  85. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

KO-Yeah, I mentioned the SO jokingly. You’re right, he’s my most hated ex-Yankee EVER.

  86. Patrick April 15th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Kelly Clarkson is a fantastic singer, good choice for the anthem.

It will be cool to see all the old players but I’m bummed out Mattingly won’t be there. He is a true Yankee but unfortunately he is employed elsewhere and has a job to do :(

  87. AROD fan April 15th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

it is not that kelly c is bad, it’s that they could have done way better.

  88. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:07 pm

She’s my favorite Idol WINNER. My favorite Idol Contestant is Daughtry.
    I would’ve loved Springsteen.

  89. tampayank April 15th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Mattingly should have skipped one game, cmon it’s the NL West :0

  90. Joe from Long Island April 15th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

PAT M – you’re right, the Mets have lost what identity they had. Being a native New Yorker, and still living there. obviously, the Mets seem stuck in the identity of being the baseball team that’s not the Yankees. Not too appealing as an identity, if you ask me.

But, they seemed confused as an organization in that, rather than celebrate their own history (they are 47 years old, after all, not exactly an expansion franchise anymore), they try to conjure up memories of a team that moved away from NY in 1957. Problem there – most of their fans weren’t even alive in 1957, let alone ever even heard of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

I guess it goes along with their overrall organizational confusion. Like it or not, no one has ever accused the Yankees of being confused as to their identity.

  91. DT April 15th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Will the Yankees have an ambulance on the field in case Pavano trips over the foul line?

  92. Boof Henderson April 15th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

    Kelly Clarkson?

This is Yankee Stadium we are opening isnt it

  93. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

Citi Field doesn’t sound good. No problem remodeling Ebbetts Field, but Jackie Robinson rotunda is totally out of place, and there’s nothin about Piazza, Seaver, or the 69/86 Mets. Come on guys, we know you’re not the Yankees but at least mention that you have, in fact, won too.
Mets are spoiled; SNY loves them.

  94. tim boat April 15th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

I heard at the new stadium they will also play Kate Smith’s GOD BLESS AMERICA every half inning

  95. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Adam Schein is going to propose to Santana.

  96. Bo knows April 15th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

You know I wouldn’t be surprised if a backup for all three OF positions isn’t worth a couple of mil a year. Swisher is not really chopped liver out there and if Melky was put in as defensive upgrade over him, that’s very valuable. I’ve always thought that the Yankees should have done it years ago. Melky doesn’t have enough power for the corners or speed for CF but if he hits, becomes very valuable off the bench.

  97. Bronx Jeers April 15th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Swish is gonna get a nice ovation from the fans when he’s introduced. What a road trip he’s had.

I know he’s gonna come back down to earth but it seemed he was destined to take over Nady’s spot anyway. More presence at the plate, better defense and a lot of fire.

  98. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

Bo knows-He’s a goo defender, Melky.
I think Gardner is a good defender too, he’s just making some rookie mistakes.

  99. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

    goo is good.

  100. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Bronx Jeers-The amazing thing is that Nady wasn’t doing bad, Swish was just doing unbelievable.
Favorite moment of yesterday’s game: Garza playing chin music on Swisher and Swisher hitting a homer same at bat (was it next pitch?).

  101. Mike April 15th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

    Pete,

Just wanted to thank you for all the coverage you provide. As a Yankee fan, gameday hasn’t been as much fun as it has these last 2 years.

Beats the hell out of following Ken Phelps growing up.

  102. Bo knows April 15th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

I think I like Alex’s attitude in not participating in the Opener. “If I can’t be part of the solution, I don’t want to be part of the problem”. I like that.

  103. Mike April 15th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

I believe Swish hit his home run 2 pitches after.

  104. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Bo knows-Surprisingly smart comment by A-Rod.
Not that A-Rod’s not smart (no idea how smart he really is) but normally he makes dumb comments to the media.

  105. Bronx Jeers April 15th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Met’s were supposed to be the that team that was gonna fill the hearts of all the disgruntled Dodger/Giant(hence the blue and orange) fans as they obviously couldn’t become Yankee fans. And in many ways they’ve succeeded. The stadium is supposed to echo that so they’ve sort of stolen some history .

  108. Bo knows April 15th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

No, that wasn’t a quote of Alex.

More a paraphrase of an aphorism that summed up, what I thought was his attitude in not attending.

  109. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Bronx Jeers-I know, but they’re not the Giants/Dodgers. They have their own history, and it’s like they’re not proud of it.
Besides, all those old Dodgers/Giants fans are either gone or already converted by now.

  110. Teixeiramvp (JobaCyYoung) April 15th, 2009 at 9:24 pm

  121. Mark in Tampa April 15th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Just got back from today’s game, great win for the Yanks. Many of the fans in my section were Yankee fans, so there were minimal cowbell problems. Tampa’s bullpen is going to bite them hard this year. They have nobody to rely on at this point, and effectively no closer as Percival looks like he is at the end of the road. However, BJ Upton is definitely a singular talent, and if you get the chance to see him live, do it. He makes Carl Crawfors look old and slow.

He couldn’t and hit 249 or something with a ridiculously low number of RBI’s. Melky is a backup at best, which is a shame because I used to really like him.
    ================================
We disagree. I’ve watched the kid live since 2005 and he’s already a good defender with a great arm, and has some ability as a hitter to mine. He was rushed up here at 20 – he probably should have spent at least another year at AAA. That’s on the Yankees. I don’t buy him as a no-talent who should ride the pine for the rest of his young career.

Marlon Byrd has just a lousey 5-6 night with a homer and two doubles

  195. m April 15th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

I swear I clicked on the YES link on mlb.tv around the 6th inning or so, but I got the Rays crew. They weren’t bad, didn’t trash the Yankees or complain about umpiring. Didn’t sound disgusted when the Rays pen blew the game. Kept talking about the veterans in the pen.

But what cracked me up, was the guys was getting a little excited about doing the splits for the 3 switch hitters in a row. Like it was something amazing.

Ian Kinsler? He’s tired of hearing about how the midget took his job.

    GB,

you think Cashma would look into Cruz or Byrd as our CFer by season’s end? after all, we do need like 2 OFers next season.

  197. AROD fan April 15th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

I guess this might be the better way to get Kinsler his 2 cycles

They might try for Byrd, but, they’re not likely to get Cruz from Texas. Tonight, Cruz is just 2-5 with a grand slam and 2 run double.

    Gb,

When Cashman acquires a OFer by the deadline, you know its a signal of someone’s Yankee career is coming to an end.

  200. AROD fan April 15th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Ok, back to Mariners/Angels… I knew Washout would have given up the lead by the time i switched back!

  201. GreenBeret7 April 15th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Yep. Hate to see Bernie go, but, it’s time. Right now Texas is fighting for the west title, so, they’re not likely to trade Byrd. All depends on whether Andruw Jones comes around for real. St. Louis needs pitching badly with Carpenter out for a couple of months.

  202. GreenBeret7 April 15th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

WOW….RIP Mr. Merle Harmon. Great announcer, great football player. actor Mark Harmon is his son, his daughter Kris was married to Rick Nelson. Grandsons were the Nelsons, Sam and Gunther.

  203. GreenBeret7 April 15th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

    sorry. Gunner Nelson

  204. GreenBeret7 April 15th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

My mistake Mark and Kris was Tom Harmon’s kids. Merle was still a great announcer

just saw Swish talking about opening New Yankee Stadium on Sportscenter, he said the clubhouse feels as big as a Wal Mart, lol

No Ralph Houk, Pete Mickelson, Pedro Ramos, Phil Linz, Mike Stanton, Mike Stanley, Jim Bouton, Ryne Duran or Hal Reniff?

GB7, FYI, Pedro Ramos owns a cigar factory down here in Miami

what a pity Ol’ Pete had to pitch for those really bad Washington teams and the twins. Damned fine pitcher (like Camilo Pasqual and Jim Kaat). Pedro was a great hitter and could run. He used to have foot races with Mantle and always ended up about a half a step slower. It was off Ramos in 1956 that Mantle hit his first bomb off of the facade.

If NYY had gotten Pedro from Cleveland a week earlier in 1964, they would have won the WS against ST. Louis. He closed for NYY down the stretch and was just about perfect. They missed it by 5 days.

GB: I wasn’t attempting to be mean or anything like that. It just seems like there’s been a glut of deaths this year…I really do wish people would stop dying, y’know?

I didn’t take it as being mean, “Becca. I know what you mean though. We’ve been hit hard in the family, too.

  212. GreenBeret7 April 16th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Ouch. Clayton Kershaw has a one hitter through the 6th inning with one walk, 10 strikeouts. Only hit was a 2nd inning leadoff homer by Bengie Molina. We have the only Molina that can’t hit.

  213. GreenBeret7 April 16th, 2009 at 12:03 am

Kershaw has some kind of arm for such a young kid….he actually has a clue of what he’s doing on the mound.

  214. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story April 16th, 2009 at 12:05 am

Alas I fear for Kershaw, what with Torre in the dugout…

  215. GreenBeret7 April 16th, 2009 at 12:08 am

WOW. 7 innings, 13 strikeouts. 95 MPH fastball and a 70 MPH curve. That’s just cruel. Running him and Billingsley out back to back is unfair. Billingsley struck out 11 last night…1 run. Koufax and Drysdale, part 2.

  216. GreenBeret7 April 16th, 2009 at 12:11 am

amazing duo. 14 innings, 2 runs, 24 strikeouts and 1 walk in two nights. The Giants are screwed.

  217. Buddy Biancalana April 16th, 2009 at 12:28 am

There goes Kershaw’s win thanks to Kuo blowing it.

  218. GreenBeret7 April 16th, 2009 at 12:34 am

Yep. Rowand’s 3 run bomb destroyed a great start.

Gotta find out what Seattle’s pre-game meal is when they play the angels. They’re at it again.

  219. GreenBeret7 April 16th, 2009 at 12:37 am

Suzuki hits a slam on his first game back. 2-5 with a steal and a slam.

I wish Don Larsen threw the opening pitch to Yogi Berra.

In our section, the vendors ran out of hot dog buns in the 6th inning!

  222. WTF April 17th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Kelly Clarkson? WTF? I guess Clay Aiken was busy. Couldn’t they have found someone with a New York connection? What about Billy Joel, Paul Simon, etc, etc, etc?
