BIG START FOR WANG: CMW has been, well, brutal for two starts. 4.2 innings, 15 hits, 15 earned runs, 6 walks, 1 strikeout. He could pitch three complete game shutouts in a row and his ERA would still be 4.26.
The Yankees tried having him throw on the field in Tampa on Wednesday and Wang appeared to have overcome his mechanical issues. But as pitching coach Dave Eiland has been saying, now he need to take it into the game.
Wang is 3-2, 2.97 against the Indians in his career and usually pitches well at home. You can bet that grass will be high.
BRUNEY THE BEAST: Brian Bruney has fanned 12 hitters in his last 5.2 innings and now allowed a hit. He is 10 outs away from a “perfect game” reliever-style.
MR. CONSISTENT: Nick Swisher has successfully reached base via hit or walk in all 11 games.
HIM, TOO: Robinson Cano has hit safely in 10 of the 11 games.
Like a lazy slacker, I’m taking yet another day off. However, I have ceded control of the blog over to my Journal News colleague and good pal, Kevin Devaney Jr. So any posts from here on out will be from him.

UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: The news from Chad Jennings in Scranton is that right-handed reliever Anthony Claggett has been called up to New York. We’ll find out soon what the corresponding move is.
Claggett arrives in New York a day after Gary Sheffield hit his 500th homer for the Mets. Claggett was one of the prospects the Yankees received for Sheff.
UPDATE, 2:17 p.m.: Juan Miranda was sent back for Claggett. The reason Robertson can’t come back is that once a player is sent down, he has to remain in the minors at least 10 days before coming back — unless he’s replacing somebody being put on the DL.
UPDATE, 3:06 p.m.: Hey, Kevin Devaney here. I’ll be taking over for Pete for the rest of the day as he gets a well-deserved day off.
Some notes from the pregame:
— Girardi said he’s been texting ARod a lot over the last few days. Rodriguez is “doing wonderfully” in Tampa during his rehab but is still has a long way to go. “There’s a lot of things he still has to do before he’s ready to get into a game,” said Girardi, who then listed everything from fielding bunts, balls in the hole, sliding, etc., etc.
— Jorge Posada was not pleased about being removed late in yesterday’s game for Jose Molina. The move was a defensive one by Girardi, which was a blow to Posada’s ego. “He’s the manager,” Posada said. “I guess I’ve still got to prove myself.”
Posada is obviously coming back from surgery on his shoulder last July. He said he’s feeling good and showed good arm strength in throwing out Grady Sizemore attempting to steal yesterday.
Teams are going to be testing Posada behind the plate the way the Rays did last week. With Wang on the mound today, expect the Indians to, as well. When you have a 37-year-old catcher coming off surgery, you have to be cautious and Girardi is. Posada expects he’ll come out for Molina late in close games for the forseeable future.
— Xavier Nady was in the MRI machine, according to Girardi, while we were talking to the manager at 1 o’clock. The results aren’t available yet but could be after the game. Obviously, this incredibly slow process has a purpose as the Yankees are taking every step to possibly avoid surgery on Nady’s elbow.
UPDATE, 3:21 p.m.: I strongly encourage you to tune into the Fox broadcast early today to listen to Nick Swisher read the Yankees lineup. I was standing near the camera outside the dugout today and heard roars of laughter throughout. It should be pretty entertaining.
Also, when I arrived at the clubhouse this morning, Swish was sitting on the floor in front of his locker cutting out pictures of himself with gigantic scissors. “I’m making a collage,” he said as he pointed up at the bare walls around his locker.
UPDATE, 3:50 p.m.: WANG IS BACK! Well, maybe it’s too early to say that. But that was a solid first inning, especially the sinker to strike out Sizemore. The strikeout, by the way, matched his season total and the scoreless inning dropped his ERA from 28.93 to a more repsectable 23.82.
UPDATE, 3:55 p.m.: By the way, it’s the bottom of the first and there’s plenty of good places to sit on the lower level. That, or some of these rich folks came to the game dressed as empty seats.
UPDATE, 4:12 p.m.: It’s bad enough for Wang to give up a home run there. But an opposite field shot to the deepest part of the park, and to Shin-soo Choo? Yikes. Choo went with the pitch and really drove it out there, so give him some credit. Still, Wang can’t give back the lead like that.
UPDATE, 4:16 p.m.: Who said Yankee fans aren’t making noise in the new stadium? They’re booing Wang right now very loudly. It’s 4-2 in the top of the second and Sizemore is up. Can’t turn the lineup over this easily, even this one.
UPDATE, 4:24 p.m.: I don’t know what this looks like on TV, but it looks like the Indians hitters are teeing off on Wang. Victor Martinez was sitting on that pitch and couldn’t have hit it harder. Here comes Girardi… and here come the boos for Wang. Now can everyone worry? Something is clearly wrong.
UPDATE, 4:34 p.m.: Wang’s line: 1.1 inn, 8 H, 8 ER, 0 BB, 1 K; 52 pitches/34 strikes.
UPDATE, 4:40 p.m.: First career grand slam for Asdrubal Cabrera, who only needed to hit the ball 6 inches over the fence to get it. You’re all talking about “jet streams” going out to right field, and I dismiss that because the Yankees get to benefit from that, too. But that was a joke of a home run.
UPDATE, 4:43 p.m.: 14 runs on 13 hits, including three home runs. All in a tidy 37 minutes where 17 batters came to the plate and only one pitching change. I can’t imagine the Yankees have ever had a worse inning than what we just witnessed.
UPDATE, 4:46 p.m.: Right on cue, Yankees PR guy Jason Zillo announced the 14 runs and 13 hits were the most the Yankees have ever allowed in a single inning. They’re confirming that with the Elias Sports Bureau. The 14 runs matched a franchise-record for an inning by Cleveland.
UPDATE, 4:50 p.m.: You’re all bringing up Halladay. Don’t forget about this guy (click for link).
UPDATE, 4:56 p.m.: Another note on Cleveland’s 14-run inning: The last team to score 14 runs? The Red Sox on June 27, 2003. To make you feel better, it was in the first inning against the Marlins and Carl Pavano started the game. Damon went 5 for 7. OK, now let’s never speak of the 14-run inning again.
UPDATE, 5:30 p.m.: Amazing to think it but this game could be worse. Edwar Ramirez gets three straight outs with the bases loaded. Jeter’s out of the game.
UPDATE, 5:49 p.m.: I know I’m not Pete Abe, but after reading your comments I have some thoughts.
First, one loss, even one this bad, isn’t the end of the world. The Brewers lost today, too. And whether you lose 1-0 or 16-2, it’s all the same in the standings. If the Yankees have any pride, and you know guys like Jeter, Posada, and Swisher do, they’ll come out tomorrow and thump Carl Pavano around the way he deserves to be.
Second, Claggett deserves a little slack. Yes, eight runs in 1.2 innings is dreadful. But we spoke to the kid before the game and he was clearly wide-eyed. He talked about driving into the city last night and seeing the New York City skyline and how “it hit me” that he was in the majors. I’m not saying you should ease up because he’s a nice guy. But he got thrown to the wolves in the second inning in a total no-win situation.
As I wrote that, by the way, the Indians just tacked on a couple of more homers.
UPDATE, 6:24 p.m.: What would be worse? Losing by 18 runs today or getting beat tomorrow by Carl Pavano? Just curious.
UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.: Just a quick stat:
Yankees starters ERA: 6.39
Yankees starters ERA minus Wang: 3.38
That’s what 23 earned runs allowed in six innings will do to your team’s numbers.
UPDATE, 6:37 p.m.: They’re doing the YMCA and the crowd is really into it. It’s reason No. 4,582 that the real fans are on this blog and not in the stadium.
UPDATE, 6:47 p.m.: There’s a one in a million chance you catch a foul ball at a game. But there’s a one in a billion chance that the idiot throws it back onto the field near players. What’s going on here? Moronic.
UPDATE, 7:00 p.m.: Apparently the jet streams have shifted to left field. Travis Hafner just fisted an opposite-field homer down the line to left. Home run count for the Indians today: 6.
Chants of “We want Swisher” have come up in the crowd.
UPDATE, 7:03 p.m.: There have been 17 home runs in three games at the new Yankee Stadium. Citi Field might not see 17 all year.
UPDATE, 7:16 p.m.: Forgot to post this during the game. Fateful words of the day, as said by Yankee manager Joe Girardi:
“You don’t manage thinking about who your long reliever is going to be.”
UPDATE, 7:18 p.m.: Worst loss in Yankees history: Aug. 31, 2004: a 22-0 loss at home to the Cleveland Indians.

Let’s go wang
Man, really hope Wang can make the adjustments.
I’m going to today’s game. I’ve heard many opinions of the new stadium. I can’t wait to judge for myself.
One quick thing. Is it just me, or does Neil Best totally kick Raissman and Mushnick’s ass. The guy is able to deliver news and insight without being so negative and nasty all the time.

Do you pay any credence to the theory that along with Wang’s stride being outta whack, that he’s also landing “incorrectly” (possibly due to the lisfranc injury)?
Pete – enjoy your time off. Being on the road for two months is rough.

Clay – Enjoy the game. I suggest starting early at the Mohegan Bar with a drink and a nosh. And I agree, Neil Best is pretty good in his coverage. Richard Sandomir at the Times is also pretty evenhanded, I think.
I’m not confident at all in Wang; the Yankees really needed to have a long man up to back him up and they’ve failed to do so. The pen is going to be shredded if he keeps up his 1/2 inning stints

Yuck, utterly sickening, the last guy I thought would be an issue is Wang, what a disappointment he has been thus far. Those numbers are beyond despicable and from a #2 starter in the rotation at that. Anything less than a solid 6 innings of 3 run ball from Wang today has to raise only more concerns. He is the only starter I have 0 faith in, no idea what happened to him.
For the sake of Cokey and Albaladejo’s arms…I’m praying for 6 innings from Wang today.
Indians are a FB hitting team if Wang doesn’t get his sinker down it will be ugly.

oh boy. don’t get me started. i’m trying to make light of the wang /eiland situation, but eiland really may totally missing the point with what chien ming wang needs to do to throw a good sinker.
i’ve said this what seems like a hundred times on the blog, but wang has to shorten his stride from his natural stride to make his sinker work. eiland never mentions this at all which makes me wonder if he knows what makes wang tick.
besides showing him the sinker grip ,shortening the stride was what neil allen did to wang at triple a to teach him the sinker in the first place. whenever wang needed a tune up, allen would first of all tell him to shorten his stride( i know this because allen told me in a lengthy conversation last spring)
until i hear from eiland that’s what he does with wang when “fixing” him, i’m going to be skeptical. eiland was not around during wang’s two 19 win seasons. he really may not be the one to be fixing wang.
if the stride if off, yes it makes sense that a lot of other things would be off, but treating these other things is just treating the symptoms and not the cause which is the long natural stride.
let me ask people this. can a new pitching coach teach a veteran knuckleball pitcher how to throw a knuckleball ? who knows more, the knuckleball pitcher( or his old coach) or the new pitching coach who wasn’t there over the years the pitch was developed?
the answer is obvious that the new pitching coach is not going to be an expert on what makes the knuckleball click. wang’s sinker is a trick pitch like the knuckleball. very few pitcher’s can throw it like wang does. it was either dumb luck or an educated guess( maybe a little of both) that made allen suggest the sinker to wang. what we know is that there was instant success. why not stick to that serendipitous simplicity?
until i hear from eiland that’s what he does with wang when “fixing” him, i’m going to be skeptical. eiland was not around during wang’s two 19 win seasons. he really may not be the one to be fixing wang.
there was a hopeful sign in that eiland was working on wang on slowing down his left leg. i guess that could be translated that a slower left leg is a shorter stride. i just hope they get wang back to being wang. the yankees need him.

I guess the only question is could it get anymore uglier than it has already been with him. Every game since Spring we keep hearing about keeping the ball down, arm angle, etc, etc and he goes on the mound and still does the same things that leads to him getting tattooed. He might want to start off today by throwing strikes early and often and develop some consistency.

Eiland did say he had an issue with his left leg. Maybe like a “tell” in poker, giving too much information on what another team could look for might not be a good thing.
If Allen told you, he could just as easily have picked up the phone and told Eiland or Wang the stride was off. If he didn’t and they still are missing it, maybe he should.
I’m a little nervous about Wang today. I’m just hoping we see a pitcher resembling the good old Wang we know and not his evil twin-Bad Wang.
randy – I well remember your feelings on this. As a bottom line guy, and someone who really doesn’t have the knowledge of pitching as others do, I just want a good outcome – Wang being Wang, a winning pitcher. Same as we all do.
Rebecca – sorry to hear things aren’t so hot with you right now. They must be significant if you’re turning down Yankee tickets. Hope it works out for you.
As we saw, the Indians will crush FBs so if Wang can’t get the ball down, it’s going to be worse than the Tampa game.
The pen has pitched 7.2 innings in the last 2 days. I have no idea where Girardi goes today if Wang is out after a couple of innings. Cashman needs to stop being stubborn and open up a 40 man spot for a long man, I absolutely think that is the issue.

I expect a better outing from Wang. It might not be the old Wang, but he’s still working his way back. And foot/leg issues are difficult for pitchers too overcome. Look at Hughes. Took him a long time to get right (compounded by a sprained ankle).
I hope that Molina works with Wang today. Maybe he’s taking some Chinese classes with AJ.

from what i’ve read the foot is 100% healed. not pitching in so long probably is a factor. the shorter stride allen taught him is not natural to wang, so maybe he has drifted away from it without realizing it while not pitching for so long.

in the bullpen when things aren’t in game conditions wang may be able to throttle it down and keep his stride in check. when he gets out there in game conditions maybe he amps it up a notch and lengthens his stride without realizing it.
on the other hand, maybe the sinker isn’t as good in the pen as eiland sees it. i’m not sure about the comment from eiland that the sinker is there in the pen and that all wang has to do is take it into the game. that’s a little self serving in that it puts the burden 100% on wang instead of some of it being on eiland.
that said, maybe eiland is right about the bullpen part . today will be must see tv to see what’s going to happen. your guess is as good as mine.

It may not be today, but Wang will get through this and help us out big time over the course of the season. It’s a mental hurdle he’s got because he has his stuff except in game situation. I wouldn’t give up so quickly on a talented young guy that can pitch a lot of innings for us once he gets it together.
I question the mental makeup of some of the posters here…Wang’s been a winning pitcher for the past 3 years and all of a sudden he’s not mentally tough? Pitchers struggle & get out of whack, remember Moose circa late 2007?
The key is for Wang to learn how to make the adjustments on the mound, which is what he’s struggling with.

this kind of comment is exactly what bothered me about eiland saying that wang needed to take it from the bullpen to the mound. he really threw wang under the bus saying that about twenty times after the game.
even if it was true, it’s not a cool thing to say. it would be like a hitting coach saying that a hitter looks good in bp , but he chokes in a game.
What do you guys think would happen to Wang if he has another bad game?
Well, Wang carried his stuff to the mound when he wasn’t injured. So, I’ll chalk this up to being down for an extended period of time, not trusting the foot enough, and not having enough rehab starts.

“sole reason” is a stretch but I agree with the premise. Wang has been a big contributor and deserves a litle leash.
game is on fox so you know the whole nation is watching, I expect flamers to be at all time high if it gets ugly for Wang, hopefully he returns to form and goes 8 innings.

So Wang isn’t the “sole” reason the team ERA is the highest (irrelevant stat 2 weeks into the season). Everyone’s darlings Joba & CC have contributed to.
I agree with you randy l., when I heard Eiland make that comment it was totally uncool. Stottlemyre & Gator would NEVER have said something like that. That alone is not good for a pitcher’s psyche.
m-CC has done alright, and Joba had one good and one bad start.
The culprits of high ERA are our spotty bullpen and Wang.
Both will improve.

Interestingly, our offense has actually done pretty well, scoring less than four runs only once. In theory we shouldn’t be very good, and yet yesterday we score six runs.
How weird is that?
There is nothing offensive or insensitive about saying that Wang now needs to take his impressive performance in B.P. into the game, when 1. Wang has an ERA higher than his age, and 2. Is actually a compliment, trying to back his talent up buying him time. Alot of people on this blog want to trade him for a bag of baseballs. Eiland is not knocking Wang’s mental strength, he is merely stating that he did good in B.P. and now all he has to do is pretty much replicate it in his next game. Big deal.

the question is whether neil allen know more about wang’s mechanics than dave eiland?
since allen taught wang the pitch and in a week’s time turned him from an average triple a pitcher into an unhittable pitcher, i think the answer is clear.
i’m just repeating exactly what allen told me in spring training last year.
what i’m saying is not necessarily a slam on eiland. he may be a great pitching coach and not know what makes a trick pitch work.he wasn’t there when it was created. wang’s sinker is an unusual pitch.
I don’t care what other people say about Wang. I’ve seen Wang pitch, as have all of us, and I know he can be an excellent pitcher. He’s won 19 games twice and has come close to a no-hitter several times.

Wang was in pretty good form last year until he rounded 3rd base in that Houston series…8-2 in 15 starts I believe? A complete game at Fenway giving up 1 run earlier in the year…winning 19 games in ‘06 and ‘07…

leblanc – In BP Wang is not facing live batters, the fact that he can’t adjust IS Eiland’s problem as much as Wang…so to say that Wang can’t take it from BP to mound is not the correct answer nor is it complimentary.
Oh, staring rotation. I thought it was all ptching ERA. Disregard my bullpen ERA comments. In that case it’s all Wang.

The difference between Pavano and decent human beings:
Pavano gets hurt and is defended by Cashman and given way to many chances to start. When he’s gone, he says the Yanks treated him badly and he had no good moments here.
Nady is hurt and he feels guilty about all the money the Yankees spent on him since he can’t help us.
Pavano’s a jerk.

I don’t know that much about him except he came over in the Shef trade, is a middle reliever and might be good enough to be the long man today if Wang can’t get out of the 3rd inning.
I would assume the Claggett move is a “hedge bet” with Wang pitching.

the problem with that is allen works for the rays as a pitching coach now and has since 2006. i don’t think the rays front office would like allen fixing wang.
Coke threw 23 pitches yesterday and will be ready to go by Monday by the latest. It makes zero sense to send him or Albaladejo down.

Veras is out of options. To send him down the Yankees would have to expose him to waivers and risk losing him. With his arm some team would likely pick him off waivers.
Veras can’t be sent down, he doesn’t have any options left. He may be dealt, but can’t be sent down.

Yep. Rule of thumb. If ESPN says it…it’s wrong.
Wang has a 2 1/2 year track record of knowing how to pitch. He would get out of wack from time to time and get hit around. It’s a matter of time for him to figure his mechanics out. Let’s just hope for sooner rather than later…
I don’t think Eiland was insulting to Wang. The FACT is that what else is there to say – he relayed that Wang had a good BP session and a good batting practice side session and now all that’s left for him to do is to take those successes into a game. The fact that he said it several times speaks more to the fact that Eiland had nothing else to say, or no new way to say the same thing than it does about Wang himself.
And isn’t it the truth? Wang has to take the improvements he made outside of a game into a game.
For most people that was enough to be said. For others who are hungry for further information about what exactly they worked on and how, it wasn’t a satisfactory meeting with the media. Part of me wishes I knew more details, but the other part doesn’t really need to know as long as Wang turns it around eventually.
I’m not looking for vintage Wang today, but I am looking for some progress. But Cleveland is a team that has had success against him, so, I’ll just keep my fingers crossed.

Matsui looked horrible in his last AB. They say his knee is day to day, but if the guy can’t even run the bases on dirt you have to figure he is cooked. At least finding a DH/OF type will be easier than finding pitching.
Girardi putting a defensive line-up out today with Wang pitching. Pena at third. I guess Girardi has seen enough of Damon in LF.
Cjaggett and Whelen were the two best parts of that Sheffield trade. Sanchez was the big name, but, he was more hope and ability than fact. NYY was hoping he’d come around, but, I don’t think he’s ever taken rehab seriously. Either that or the surgery was botched.

Miranda has only 10 major league at-bats where he went 4 for 10. In AAA he has a career .837 OPS which is pretty damn good. Until he fails at the major league level you can’t call him a “AAAA type hitter”. That’s just absurd.

Claggett’s big pitch is the splitter he turned into a plus offering last season.
Right on Patrick, Miranda’s been hitting the cover off the ball. He is the one that’s going to be showcased for a trade as the club has no room for him when everyone gets healthy, & he is out of options & I doubt he would clear waivers.
Miranda can only play 1B or DH. They want Tex’s glove at 1B (in addition to his bat from both sides). Thus, the only spot for Miranda is DH. With Girardi needing to rest the older guys (Damon, Posada) with 1/2 days at DH to keep their bat in the lineup…there are not a lot of at bats for Miranda on the ML level.
I would take Miranda as the DH with Matsui struggling.
Patrick. Miranda is playing kids in AAA and he is (at least) 26 years old. But I’ll grant you his stats look good and he was rated the 21st prospect in 2008, just found this at RAB, “He’s proven to be a classic platoon hitter, mashing righties to a .300-.397-.514 line while slumping to .208-.279-.329 against southpaws”…so I guess we will see…
I think that Carmona would make Miranda look foolish with the sinkers and off speed pitches. Carmona’s anothe good pitcher due to break out.
Look through the list of big name pitchers who are getting hammered. Hammels, Lincecum, Webb, Johnson, Beckett, Harden, Zambrano, and Zito. That’s just the NL. Then you have Haren with his 1.80 ERA and a 0-3 record.
Ace, I agree Miranda is better than Matsui right now…but I’d still take Damon over both. I guess I would have to agree that he can come off the bench to hit a right hander for us right now or provide depth in a trade.
Kyle Veras shouldn’t make an appearance today unless the game gets ugly early.

Miranda is a legitimate lefty power hitter who has power to all fields. Shown improvement lately vs. LHP, which has been his nemesis. He’s not a AAAA hitter; he could help us now, especially in our park. His defense is another matter. They might want to try to tutor him in a COF position, like they’re doing with Eric Duncan, in order to sneak his bat into games down the road. The bat, though, is serious.
Claggett’s a sinkerballer that pitches to contact, has plus slider and has developed a nice changeup.

You can look at it like that. You can also say that if he pitches 200 IP over his next 30 starts and pitches to a 3.38 ERA over that stretch, his ERA will be approximately his career ERA. He’s been able to win 70% of his games with that ERA….I’d take that this season!
The other part of the sheffield trade is Kevin Whelan. He’s got better stuff than Claggett, but, Claggett’s got better control and is a thinker on the mound. As long as they don’t overexpose him by pitching him 3 innings in a game, Claggett will be just fine.
Miranda is really like 46 years old.
Any pitcher would be better than Veras at this juncture…except Marte.

Cabrera deserves a start over Miranda, assuming that Miranda’s even staying. Cabrera worked hard over the winter and during ST. He’s done everything they’ve asked…Limited at bats and he’s producing in his few chances.
If Robinson Cano continues to walk at the rate that he is and continues to show some power and prowess in the field, I don’t think it’s farfetched to expect him to win the MVP this year.
When Cano is hot, is there anyone better? He’s certainly better than Pedroia and Pedroia won the MVP last year.
So let me get this straight. Miranda can’t field, can’t hit lefties, is unproven at the MLB level. So his value to us is as a left handed pinch hitter who occasionally DH’s when Posada or Damon is not hitting there. I think we should ‘argue’ about something more important…
But at least this takes up some time until the first pitch!

I suppose a person could interpret Eiland’s statements as saying he did all he could do and now it’s up to Wang, and taking that as a passing off of responsibility. I guess I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt – it’s just what I do – and I’ve been right to do so sometimes and incorrect sometimes, as well. I don’t see what good it would do for his working relationship with Wang and the other pitchers under his purview to be self-serving.
Ultimately, though, it is up to Wang, whether it’s simply putting it all together and taking it into the game, or speaking up and saying, no, this is not what I was taught, this is not how I learned the sinker. I understand there is a language issue as well as a cultural one, however.
I don’t know enough about Eiland or the science of pitching to have a real opinion as to whether Eiland is doing a good job or not. I know I wondered what the heck happened last season since one of the reasons, ostensibly, that Eiland was named pitching coach in the first place was that he had intimate knowledge of and good working relationships with both Hughes and Kennedy, and we all saw how that went.
So I think you, who at least have a background in baseball as well as a relationship with the guy who helped Wang develop his sinker, have a basis for being skeptical.

Our best DOF was out there yesterday. Damon is a better OF than Swisher, though latter upgrade over Nady. Happy to see Gardner playing much deeper. Catch in ninth yesterday was the first gem out of his glove so far, and could have saved the game. Saw the replay today, but it didn’t really do it justice. It was a great catch.
Melky will play well if he gets consistent ABs. He’s been hitting well since WB, having adjusted after going off course AT AGE 23 by getting mesmerized by sudden power he experienced. Unbeknownst apparently, to knee-jerk people on this board, young hitters who make decent contact and suddenly touch some power, often go through an awkward period trying to accommodate the new power. He started hacking and got completely unhinged. He has made the adjustment, thanks to a lot of effort.
I’m headed back to the Stadium. One comment on the demo and the vibe:
I’ve now sat in Field, Main Suites, Terrace, & Grandstand. Still have to make it to Bleachers. I think it’s premature to say anything conclusive about this crowd vs. the one across the street. But I will say that people around me in each place I’ve sat (this goes back to Cubbie ST games) are very focused on the game and are reacting to it. Less gratuitous stuff happening, no primals, but let’s see how it plays out as the season speeds along – or see what happens when Boston pays us a visit.
Damon is old. His outfield skills were in decline when we got him. Our outfield is our weakest link. I am looking forward to the next generation, with AJax and hopefully the promising group of teenagers in Staten Island – led by Eddie Sosa – will be out there in a few years.

Just looking at the trenton lineup. They have played 7 games(4-3) and no one has a homerun yet. Corvelli has started out slow. Macalister and Hacker have had good starts to the season. Is there anyone we should be keeping an eye on thats on that team?
One more thing. Does anyone else miss the outfield walls in the old stadium which didnt have any advertising on it? These walls look like something minor league parks would have.

Hey guys, I’m going to the Yankee game tomorrow. I’m pretty excited. My brother got seats from his boss or something like that. I’d rather sit where the disabled sit because there’s actually more room there but I’ll take any seat I can get to see the new stadium.

I wasnt aware that if you complained or wasnt in agreement with some of the things in the new stadium (restaurant obscuring seats) that you would fall into the bandwagon category. Give it a rest Don. Not a complaint, just an observation, but it seems to me from TV that there is an awful lot of unpainted concrete around the stadium. Anybody know if this is the look they want, or are they planning on painting/finishing these areas as time goes on? It looks very gray in the upper areas of the stadium until you get to the frieze.

Agreed, but what I am talking about are, for example, the edges of the dugout walls and a lot of the concrete in the middle and upper decks amongst the seats. It looks gray and drab, like a battleship. The gray chain-link looking fences on the sides of the stands add to that drabness. If that is the look they want, fine, but I was thinking that a little(or a lot) more navy blue paint might give it a better look.

Rodriguez is more versatile. He can play all three outfield spots. He was also part of the outfield platoon on the pennant winning Cards teams. decent hitter, some power. Miranda has the power, but, isn’t very good against left handers. On defense, let’s just say that he owns a first baseman’s mitt.
Does anyone know if they plan to call Miranda up soon? They cant for 10 days now, right?
I don’t think this is a great move. They could have used Miranda’s offense with A-Rod and Nady out and Matsui an automatic out at this point. Now they won’t have it for ten days. Let’s hope Melky keeps up his newfound hitting ways at least for the near future.
Mark, I noticed it too, and it felt very alien and unfinished to me, but now that I am used to it, I love it. It feels more airy and open this way and there’s the benefit that they wont get the colors wrong and have that irritate fans to no end.
Anyone who hasn’t noticed the net on TV isn’t paying much attention. It’s pretty obvious. Yet it’s far less of a disaster than the following:
*Monument Park (now a cave). The monumental stupidity in this design alone should call for Trost’s job.
*Concrete courses/barricades separating the regular seats from the premium seats.
Those premium seats being empty. This is no surprise. It was known from the start that by pricing these seats they way the Yankees did, they would remain largely empty — not just for this homestand, but for the majority of games from now on. Those are corporate/wealthy-people seats. They will never get sat in like a real seat.
Obstructed view seats in the outfield, the result of a center field sports bar nobody wanted. If you polled every single Yankee fan and asked this question: Would you prefer a sports bar in centerfield with some obstructed view seats or no sports bar and no obstructed seats? You would get not one single, solitary vote for option #1. So why did they do it? Money.
I’ve remained silent on the new stadium issue from the beginning — not wanting to get hysterical about the corporate-greed-thing without warrant, but this stadium, while no disaster or lemon, is not a good thing. It’s that simple. The New Yankee Stadium cost $1.5 billion, some of it taxpayer money—your money, and it is not a good thing. It is not an improvement for most fans. It is only an improvement for those who work in the stadium (players, execs, media) and for the very wealthy and well-connected.
This place makes me less proud to be a life-long Yankee fan. It turns me off. Sad.
For those interested, Igawa is pitching in the 7th inning now with two out. He’s gotten some solid help from his defense, but all in all, has looked strong. It does look like J.B. Cox is warming up according to the bullpen monitor in the press box though.

As I said earlier, if this is the look they want, that is fine with me. I was thinking that maybe the old YS had that kind of look to it. I was very young the one time I went to the original and I don’t remember, also much of the film of the old Stadium is b+w and of course looks gray. The best way to add some color is to see some October bunting this year!
I know not Yankees related but just finised watching the memorial service for Harry Kalas and wow what a service it ended by Philies players past and present lining the first base line an serving as pallbearers to the casket as itpassed between them on each side and then Charlie Manuel, Rollins, Myers, Howard, Victorino andMoyer were the las players to be pallbearers and brought it into the hearts all the while Bridge Over Troubled Water was playing over the sound system at The Bank (as per Harry’s request), totally moving and then the hearst left the stadium with Harry for the final time.
Between OPening Cermonies at Yankee Stadium this week and then this it has been a very emotional week many highs and lows.
Is it true that Jorge left immediately following the game because Joe took him out after the 8th (or whatever)? I read that Michael Kay said this, but I don’t know if I buy it. If it is true, Jorge truly needs to grow up.

I did check in on that game from time to time, and, yes, Penny was throwing 96 regularly. He couldn’t locate and was getting shelled when he got it over. His breaking ball actually looked pretty decent on TV, but the Orioles figured out pretty quick that he couldn’t throw 3 strikes before 4 balls. Remy was commenting about how his velocity was very good from the start, and it took him 3 innings to reach that velocity in his first start, but his lack of command beat him.
I do think, however, he is the 2009 version of what they had last year with Bartolo Colon.

He got to the stadium at 10:30 am today and was bored….
Around noon, he was sitting cross-legged at his locker with some scissors and a few copies of Yankees Magazine, carefully clipping photos of his teammates. Swisher clipped around the edges of the players, leaving a little outline, and he plans to jumble the pictures together for a collage he will display on the side of his stall.

This is the best lineup that Girardi can put out IMO. Defensively as well. It’s much better to have Swisher and Cabrera in the outfield than Damon and Cabrera. Also, having Pena at third gives you a good hustle guy, and he can go deep into at bats.

No, he was with Cleveland by then. He was starting and relieving for them, but, NYY put him in the pen and he was spectacular. 13 games, 1-0 record and 8 straight saves, 1.25 ERA. I think they got him for Ralph Terry and Bud Daily after the season.
I understand, Trevor, but Matsui is useless to the Yankees right now and his presence is hurting the team in the sense that they could use that roster spot. They are a 24 man team now, in essence – we can not continue to play with that handicap.

Love the results, but everything is still up. He is going to get hit hard unless the Indians are off today. If he continues to have trouble getting the ball down, he needs to become a four-seam, slider pitcher, because the sinker is always going to be ineffective where he is throwing it. Not sure if he can be successful without it though, so he needs to get the ball to the knees and down, and do it quickly!

This isn’t all on Wang. Look at these at bats more closely. Wang is hitting his spots pretty well for the most part, in fact he is hitting the corner with some pretty good sinkers. However, the opposing hitters are SITTING ON THOSE SPOTS.
This is Posada just as much as Wang. He was 0-2 on Derosa, was dominating him on the inside corner, and what does Jorge call for? A pitch outside which Derosa has been sitting on ALL SERIES and he hits it into the corner.

It’s pathetic even on Gameday. There is not one good pitch being thrown. Swisher had more control.
I would imagine they might send Wang down to Tampa for a couple of weeks and add Hughes to the roster for his next start.
Sometimes it just happens. They had to do it with David Cone several years ago because he just lost it on the mound and couldn’t get anyone out.
They almost did it with Moose in 2007 but chose to use him out of the pen for a couple of weeks instead.
Wang will figure things out eventually. But they can’t let him get hammered out there start after start because it’s killing the bullpen.

I’m actually really disappointed Pete is off today. I’d like to see him defend Wang at this point. There is no defending this. Three starts like this in a row is the equivalent to not having it anymore. He’s not battling, he’s throwing crappy pitches which are more or less BP pitches. He does not have major league stuff right now, and running him out there every 5 days in the hopes that he’ll just magically pitch good all of a sudden is just completely foolhardy. Time to stop babying him just because he wont 38 games in two years. It shouldn’t be viewed as a punishment. But he’s not going to figure things out in bullpens and side sessions. He needs to take it to the mound, but not on a major league mound. Let him pitch in Scranton and get his confidence and stuff back. Otherwise, we are going to see this 27 or so more times this year.

It is totally valid to question Girardi’s screw-ups and today was a big one. You don’t leave Wang in there to give up 7 runs. He has thrown two stinkers in a row and should have been on a short leash. Now the game has become essentially a guaranteed loss. Girardi has not done a good job as manager this season and this is just another example.

Actually the problem IS lack of a long man. When you have a long reliever you don’t have to burn your pen whenever your starter can’t get out of the 2nd. You need to be prepared for that. You don’t have a crystal ball to know when one of your starters might have a terrible game. You also don’t know when two starters in a row might have bad games. If the Yankees should have learned one thing over the past several seasons it’s that ineffective starting kills both your pen and your offense.

A long man can’t pitch 7 innings. If you have a 1 inning starting pitcher, you need 2 longmen. One for the one inning starting pitcher and one for the rest of the rotation.
The issue isn’t a long man. The issue is, their #2 starter is a mess and can’t pitch at the major league level at this time.
Its going to be interesting to see if the Yankees do the right thing here.

SJ, Doreen – I don’t bring up Hughes here, for two reasons. One, it puts him in the position of being a savior of sorts. Two, it interrupts his own development. Instead, I would think of either Brett Tomko or Aceves. They’re finished products, and what you’re looking for is a no. 4-5 starter, after all.
I don’t know if Wanger needs to pull a Halliday, and go down to A ball to totally remake himself, or if working with Contreras for a couple of weeks does it. Or something else. But it would be an awfully big rabbit to pull out of the hat to expect Wanger to go out in 5 days in be better.

To say the Yankees don’t need a long man is stupid. The reason why almost EVERY team in the majors have long men is to protect the bullpen when games get out of control. Well Hughes pitched last night, so if they want to send Wang down to work it out Hughes would be able to pitch in place of him next week.

After that, they will need a starter for Wang’s spot on either the 27th or 28th of April, whichever one Joba doesn’t start.
At that point, it may be Hughes. I suspect we won’t be seeing Wang for awhile.

I’m more disappointed in Kevin Long than Eiland. Eiland did a good job last year and I think he will help Wang fix his problems like he did with Mike Mussina. But the offense has been getting worse and worse with RISP since Long has been the hitting coach. The more time that passes since they’ve been under Mattingly’s tutelage, the worse and worse it seems like they get. Look at Damon and Jeter’s at bats with the score tied yesterday. Look at almost any Giambi AB from last year. Terrible.

Well, Wang is done and they need to stop thinking he can pitch now as he can’t. He has lost his sinker and that’s all he had in the past. Send him down and bring up Hughes. Hughes would do better than Wang. Let Wang learn how to pitch that sinker down in AAA. If he can’t get it back, then it’s time to think trade. I don’t think anyone would really miss Wang if he were traded away.
We had him for a good few years. We are knee deep in pitching now down in the minors. We can’t keep sending Wang out there and getting creamed. Wang just isn’t effective anymore. He is done. He is a has been. See ya, Wang!! Thanks for nothin’ this season.

just talking to you, here’s the deal. i sat down last spring with neil allen and he told me exactly what makes wang tick. he said he showed him the sinker grip and shortened his natural stride. he made a point of saying that wang’s natural release point was perfect for the sinker and that was why he showed him the sinker in the first place.
now cb has turned me on to pitch f/x and it’s so totally obvious that wang’s release is a foot high and a foot in from a game last year he was doing well. it’s like someone has been coaching him to get his arm up and out of his natural lower arm slot. i don’t seee how a pitcher goes up on his own. you know that it always goes the other way and pitchers drop down when they get tired and hurt. wang is going up. it’s makes no sense.
i’ll go out on a limb and say i don’t think i’m wrong on this . wang needs to shorten his stride and go back to his natural arm slot. period. that’s it.

When a pitcher loses it like this, you have to work more with his head than with his mechanics.
Its not easy. Roy Halliday once went all the way to A ball to find himself again and made it back.
Same thing for Dontrelle Willis and he’s never made it back.
Its a shame but right now, Wang is in a very, very bad spot in his career.
Hasn’t yet made the big money, is in an arbitration year, and he’s completely lost the feel for pitching in the big leagues.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, they don’t have the luxury of keeping him on the roster. They need every spot they can muster.
As I outlined in an earlier post, with the off day on Thursday, they will work the rotation in Boston to feature AJ on Friday, Andy on Saturday and CC on Sunday.
They can go to Joba on Monday and will then need a starter for April 28. Whomever is on turn in AAA at that time probably gets that start.

I can’t believe the Yankees spent 1.5 billion on this crappy ballpark. You’d think with that much money they would do a little research and planning to make sure the stadium is perfect. Instead we have nets obstructing the YES cameras, obstructed view seating, they can’t even sell out and to top it all off it’s a freaking launching pad out to right.
Am I supposed to be excited that the Yankees clubhouse is gigantic or that we can go hang out in the totally sweet mohegan sun bar or the hard rock cafe?

SW, I don’t disagree with you often but this time I am sticking to my guns about the long man. However, I said it when the Yankees broke camp without knowing how often we might need someone to come in early. For all I knew we were going to have an ass-kicking rotation. And I STILL believed we needed a long reliever. However I have believed that over the last, say, four or five seasons. The Yankees haven’t learned. Or maybe after today they did.
I’d be interested in seeing Wang pitch with Molina catching him. No way to prove anything but I believe if options and checking them out.
Anyway, I hope that they figure out Wang’s situation and find a way to get him straight. Maybe he’s thinking too much about the upcoming birth of his son. Who knows.
I am leaving, not because I purposely choose to abandon this game but because I am on my way to help decorate for a surprise birthday party for one of my brothers. I have the tape running because in the game of baseball you never know.
I love Girardi and think he’s a great manager. Seriously. I love Cashman and think he’s a great GM. Seriously. But I have to question the sanity and abilities of anyone in a position of authority who doesn’t have the bullpen covered with long relief. Surprisingly after two shaky starts Girardi wasn’t prepared for that potential eventuality.
Did I mention that I’m hating the way the ball carries at the Stadium? Really I think that’s a travesty – obviously one that wasn’t planned. I don’t think the ghosts are real happy these days – either the ones from the past or the ones in the empty seats!

I really don’t want Phil up here…….his development will be set back. Bring Aceves – I don’t particularly like him, he had a pretty eh ST and he had a bad first start in AAA, but so be it. Phil is going to be very, very good, but he has things to work on.
The best case scenario is not to see 2 successive clunkers get into Wang’s head.
Eiland needs to get with his pitcher, study video of 2006-2007’s best outings and go from there. Build up his confidence with a few 3-4 inning stints when Joba finishes his 5th inning with a good lead then put him back in the rotation. Summon Aceves or Hughes to the big team in the meantime.

SJ44 – If the problem with Wang is mental – I think this has to be a big part of it, if Eiland, Joe, and Wang are to be believed that there’s no physical thing – then it conceivably be fixed as quick as it came. Not to say they shouldn’t take a time-out with him.
I’m not familiar enough with the rules to know if they can option him to the minors without passing him through waivers first; if they were to do that, I think they would certainly lose him. If that’s the case, then an “injury” might be found for them to DL him.
In regards to Tomko v. Aceves – I would go with Aceves if Tomko can’t start, rather than Hughes. The priority here has to be Hughes’ development, rather that short term issues.

Golly – got home just in time to see the score at 9-2 Cleveland in the second inning. Not very pretty, bless that kid who’s taking one for the team. I’ll have to read through the thread to see what everyone says, but the news about Cliff Lee was pretty surprising. Joe Buck is talking about tomorrow’s game with AJ vs Pavano and show it should be interesting. Yup . . . I hope AJ can be his usual stopper self and the offense is able to get enough off the Idle for the Yankees to prevail. But back to today, clearly something needs to give for CMW, who has been so reliable for this team. I hope he can turn it around.

My parents are from Taiwan so I have always been a big fan of Wang. However, I always wondered why the Yankees never signed him to a multi-year contract (like Cano) instead of going to arbitration every year. I am now thinking the Yankees brass knew deep down since he depends exclusively on one pitch that something like this could happen.

Wang is still throwing out of the wrong arm slot.
His release point today was still a approximately a foot off horizontally and around 4-6 inches off vertically.
What remarkable about all this is how immensely vulnerable Wang is without that pitch.
It’s not that unusual for a pitcher to lose a pitch for a day. CC and Joba didn’t have their fast ball command the past two games. CC did fine and joba wasn’t great but he wasn’t an embarrassment.
Wang loses this one pitch and that’s it – he’s done. Can’t make any adjustments and turns into a AA pitcher.
To me it looks like Wang has simply forgotten how to throw that one pitch when he was injured last year. He’s lost the muscle memory to do it. And all of this success was tied to that one pitch.
Wang just can’t let that happen. This is his career, his skill set. He can’t just completely lose the single skill his entire career depends on. That’s like an engineer who forgets how to do math.
It’s remarkable. Looking back at this off season it is a very fortunate that they were so aggressive signing AJ and that they were able to bring Andy back.
All of those conversations about how the team didn’t desperately need Andy seem pretty short sighted right now.

Phil Hughes is ready. There is no other way for him to develop than to be in the majors. What else do you guys want from him? He’s been in AAA for a long time and he’s ready.
Wang needs to go on the DL with a mysterious injury so that Phil can fill in for him. At least then we are getting quality innings, even if it’s 5 runs in 6 innings, it’s better than what Wang is giving us.

I agree about not rushing Hughes. His long term development is too important. I’d go with Kennedy over Aceves though, he’s been throwing the ball very well while aceves has been getting killed lately.
The problem is that the Yankees DO NOT have the kind of offense to play in this kind of ballpark. They will lose every time against a good offensive team because it doesn’t matter how good your pitching is in this kind of park, because every pitch you make is going to get creamed.
They could throw Pedro in his prime in this park and still lose to a good offensive team because of the way the ball flies. When you can’t hit and you play in a hitter’s park, you are dead.

Randy I, Thank’s for the clear report…I’m blacked out of today’s game, but watching him all spring and his last outing, the first thing I noticed was his stride appeared to be stretched out and he looked like he was coming over the top more…..What I didn’t know until you reported a few weeks ago was how drastic his mechanics have changed….He needs to go to Tampa and relearn how to pitch as a sinker ball pitcher…..His head is gone right now….A ball and start over…….

The minor league teams are doing well at least. This team is a .500 club at best this year, I see it continuing like this 1 rally game followed by a blowout with the occasional well pitched game mixed in. This team isn’t that special and I feel bad for the newcomers who have to endure the lashings the Yankees will be taking this summer.

For those of you who seem to refuse to know anything or use logic…
No long reliever has been called up because none of the long relief candidates are on the 40-man roster. The only long-relief candidate who WAS on the 40-man was Dan Giese who ended up being DFA’ed and subsequently picked up by another team.
Juan Miranda was brought up to replace Dave Robertson because they felt at that point that they needed another bat on the bench, and someone who could give Teixiera a break at first. Nick Swisher should not be counted on to play every day in RF, LF, and 1B. The point is to give people a break every now and then.
Juan Miranda was sent down again once they decided they needed another relief arm. They couldn’t bring up Dave Robertson because once you send a player down they have to stay in the minors for 10 days before you can call them up again (unless you are replacing someone who is just going onto the DL).
As far as Wang is concerned, his problem is two-fold. One, psychologically he’s shattered. There’s no quick fix for this. Either he needs to get it together in the majors, or he needs to take another hit psychologically by being sent down to the minors to regain confidence. And two, Dave Eiland seems to be “fixing” his mechanics incorrectly. Typically a sinkerball pitcher’s release point is up high so you can get “on top of the ball”. However historically when Wang was pitching well, he has been a foot lower and to the side from his release point now. Another poster has linked to an article describing these details on RAB.
I do agree we need a long-relief arm, but the question then becomes who do we take OFF the 40-man roster? There isn’t anybody they want to DFA, really. It’s a tough decision, but they’ll have to make it sooner or later. Brett Tomko is probably the favorite followed by Aceves.
And no, Nick Swisher can’t pitch 6 innings. We don’t want him to end up blowing his elbow out like Nady did.

How is he developing by continuing to dominate the weak AAA hitters? You don’t grow through continued success, you only grow through challenging yourself and overcoming whatever difficulties you may encounter.

Another ball that never would of been off the wall in the old stadium. Anytime the Yanks play a decent hitting team and the ball goes to the outfield this is going to happen. In July and August the ball will be going 600 feet…How exciting it will be..

here is what I like, the Yankees are down by 13 runs and the offense has checked out. 1 hit over 3 innings against a struggling Carmona.
This is a serious problem for this team and organization. They have not been able to field a reasonably hungry team for a while. I would say at least since 2002.
There is no grittiness to the team just a lot of “showing up”. If you look at all the recent success of teams in this span, none have been as quick to throw in the towel as the Yankees. It is just a sad turn for an organization like this.

I am watching the Cubs vs Cardinals game and they put the 2nd inning score up in the ballpark. They had some of the players with microphones on and they were wondering if 14 runs in one inning was some kind of record. They were talking about googling it to try to find out the answer. Is it some kind of record? Not one you want, but just wondering if it did set some record . . .
Wang has been such a great contributor, I hope they figure out how to help him in a way that will also restore his confidence.

Sure they can DL him. All they have to do is sign off on an “injury”. It happens all the time in the game.
If he has options remaining, they don’t even have to do that, they will just send him down.

Almost all of our losses will be at the hands of Wang assuming he keeps pitching. When he goes and Hughes comes we’ll do much better.
Our lineup has scored less than four runs once and we still need A-Rod, and Tex is a slow starter. Our starting five even with Hughes instead of Wang is still the best in the majors.
The Yankees are doing well w/o A-Rod. I was just hoping they could keep at about or maybe a little over 500 with no A-Rod, and they’re hanging in there. In fact, I believe they’re ahead of the BoSox and Rays
With their pitching they’ll have a shot to win each game. Let’s see what they do with it.

I never said the season is over. Simply that at every level of the organization, the Yankees have done very poorly. I was speaking more to the fact that the new stadium is laughably bad, the players are not playing well, girardi has made several bad moves in only 12 games and so has cashman. I guess you could say the AAA team has done well but everywhere else the Yanks have been an embarrasment. From the players to the coaches to the management to the business guys. Complete and utter failure thus far.

Hughes is most likely going to have to be called up. But the idea that he doesn’t need more time in AAA is simply untrue.
If Hughes doesn’t have his curve ball at the major league level he will not be able to get away with only his fastball and cutter. He can do that at the minor league level.
It’s a major step up for him to have a third pitch to lean on if his curve isn’t working.
But at the major league level without that curve ball RH batters will be difficult for him to get out.

Empty seats, bandbox ballpark, grossly overpriced tix, no charm, and ultimately the most expensive stadium ever to be built for nothing. This team will be lucky and I repeat lucky to win 85 games.
Imagine if you paid anywhere form $300-$2300 to see a regular season blow-out game.

Trevor, I don’t think you need to change the dimensions, but the open concourses are likely helping the ball fly. They need to find a way to block some of the wind from coming in, at least from behind homeplate.

I really hate seeing Edwar Ramirez used as a mopup man. He hasn’t pitched a high leverage inning all season. I wonder if he did something to fall out of favor with Girardi. I realize today there is no one else. Just commenting that he hasn’t been used in very many big situations. I think he’s a better pitcher than he’s getting credit for.

The one thing on Wang that I think is hopeful is that if he does get his arm slot back I think (hope?) that everything will just pop back into place and he’ll revert to the pitcher he was.
I don’t think it’ll be a gradual thing. I think it’ll just flash on and he’ll regain the skill.
What could take more time is him regaining the muscle memory needed to repeat his mechanics over and over so that he doesn’t lose that arm slot once he has it.
He needs to go to Tampa and spend 10 hours a day working with Nardi and breaking down tape.
I think if he regains that arm slot and feels that he has that sinker back the mental stuff will resolve on it’s own.
We’ll see. He’s not making that next start.

As for these atomic blowout losses, they used to happen once a season, now it seems they happen once a week. This team has shown it can fight back from manageable deficits. But these blowouts set a bad tone and really deflate the team and the fans. I respect the esteemed SJ’s knowledge, but Joe was too slow to act today.

People say they think we have a disadvantage because we’re a pitching first team. But look at it like this: Other teams pitchers are not as good as ours are, so we’re going to knock balls out of the ballpark a lot more than the opponent.

When i was coaching my kids little league team and we were blowing teams out i would have my right fielder(worst player) play short. I also made them a station to station basis even if the ball hit the fense. Respecting the other team and trying not to keep running up the score.

I get the arm slot preblem. But no one is talking about the speed of his pitches. I asked earlier and some responded tha he was at 90-91. He was always at the 94-95 mark. Doesnt that also make him more vulenarable. Not sure if it makes the sinker HEAVIER. But it makes the hitters have to decide much quicker. Thoughts?

I hope people read and respond to this because I truly and honestly feel this way. I want to know what people respond to what I have to say.I feel that George Steinbrenner single-handedly turned the yankees into the dynasty they had become and into THE EMBARRASSMENT of major league baseball. It seemed as though in the years passed the yankees sold out every home game at the old yankee stadium. Ticket prices were somewhat reasonable. There was always pressure to win games by yankee fans but at the new stadium, the pressure has been brought to a whole new level. TRUE yankee fans can no longer go to games. The average die hard yankee that went to 20-30 games in years past would be lucky to afford to go to one game a year with the new prices. For the brand new yankee stadium in its FIRST year to not be completely filled on its opening weekend against a good team is just saddening.The true heart of what made the yankees what they were has been taken out. It has become COMPLETELY about money. And now that the ticket prices have become SO outrageous, expectations are even higher. Fans do not expect to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars to go to a game and see what they saw today. Im sure most of them that went wanted to leave after the 2nd inning and Im sure I wouldve wanted to do the same as well. But then I would realize how much I spent and laughingly try to make the best of it.
I love the yankees as much as any fan out there but to see what i have witnessed this season makes me, as much as I hate to say it, reconsider my loyalty.
Wang’s velocity isn’t really down that much. If I’m remembering correctly, it’s down a few MPH but he never threw 94-96 mph sinkers. That was his 4-seamer velocity. He hits 91-93 on the sinker when he’s going good. I think the fact that his release point is a foot off could have some effect on his velocity.
I’m starting to think that this whole problem with Wang is mental. He had a clean first inning but after Hafner got that infield single Wang just blew up. Maybe the combination of allowing a baserunner and pitching out of the stretch screwed him over.

Kind of hard to argue for or against the bullpen right now. They haven’t proven anything yet. It’s silly to say the bullpen sucks after today’s game though. When the starter can only go 1.1 innings (YES .1 more than last time!) the bullpen is going to suck no matter what.

The bullpen has sucked – and yea, we can count today’s game. When Dice-K got pulled from the first a few days ago, the Sox pen pitched 10 shutout innings. The only guy I’m comfortable with is Mo.

We Miss Paulie- they are attributing the difference to the fact this stadium is an open concourse. Had i been an architect, I could tell you exactly what that would do. I assume the openness of it allows the wind or something to come in and do something different?

simple question: why aren’t we hearing anything from the yankees about the release point when it’s so obvious?
maybe it’s muscle memory that ’s off, but why would he go higher with his arm? that’s not the direction that a player would go on his own. i have never heard a pitching coach tell a pitcher to lower their arm slot( not that it couldn’t happen, but. they are always telling pitchers to get it up.
as a yankee fan this is upsetting, but as someone who likes the inner working of the game, this is very interesting stuff .
a pitcher of wang’s quality doesn’t just regress this badly unless there’s some reason. i have no doubt there is a very specific reason. we just don”t know what it is.
I live in colorado and this is NO Coors field. Here is why, if this were the score, at least at Coors field you would feel that the home team still had a chance, make a push. But, you don’t have that here, it is just one team and this is NOT the first game the Yanks have been hammered. Twice in the orioles game. Once by Tampa, and now twice by Cleveland. These are not the results of a bad stadium, these are the results of an offensive inept team with 2.5 legit starters – 3 when CC becomes CC.
As I said ealier, this team has no fight. In fact, no Yankee team has had fight since they lost to Arizona in 2001. It has become a collection of how high can we spend while developing very few players.

In the end the better pitching team will still win because that means one team will be hitting balls out all day and one won’t, hence the blowouts.
When we get a good pitching performance we’ll turn it around.

There’s no reason to stop loving this team. Even if their former ace has completely lost it. Even if their aging SS is slowing down, and whatever else kind of flaws you can find with this team.
If people choose to give up their season tickets because they hate this team, other people will snatch them up and they lose any seniority they had.
I don’t even know why I responded to you. But I know that I’m not going to lose my faith in this team because there are some concerns through 12 games.
I love the look of the new Stadium on TV. Great design, classic look, intimidatingly awesome 21st Century edifice. Who remembers three-dollar general admission tix to see players like Yogi, the Mick and Whitey? I’m waiting patiently for karma to bring a ticket to the new place my way.

he had a strike out, a pop up , and a fly ball out in the first inning. that actually was not a good sign because if his ball was sinking ,he wouldn’t have been getting a pop up and fly ball.
i was watching his release point on mlb gameday and it was the same wrong place as cb has stated.
i don’t think it’s mental. i think his mechanics are out of whack. for some reason his release is almost a foot higher than last year when he was pitching well.
I’m really bummed the Yanks couldn’t win this game. Would have been nice to win another series. Unfortunately it’s looking like we will have another .500 or worse April. The pitching has got to get it together! Wang please fix yourself.

If you’re really serious, I’ll answer. The price of bleacher seats and upper deck seats have changed little if any.
If you think that all Yankee fans are entitled to sit behind homeplate on field level, you must also believe all car owners are entitled to a Mercedes for Hyundai prices.
Some people have come to feel entitled. Entitiled to a seat, entitled to a championship, entitled in general. That’s not the real world. Thinking of remaining loyal to a team even when they aren’t playing like you want them to as a thinning of the herd.
The argument could be made that real fans would be willing to sit in bad seats and bag their lunch everyday to save some money to pay for the tickets so they can be in the stadium just to watch a game.

Well I am just learning how to use the internet and this 56k dial up is rather slow, but you are speaking of 1 run games. So yes, you are correct and I am wrong. But, I would hope that a team destined for greatness could overcome 1 run games. So that doesn’t really count as a counter argument. And you need to check out the number of games where teams have chipped away at a lead and eventually won; not laid down and quit.

They’ve got a crack team of engineers at Fox who know all about aerodynamics, windtunnels? The Hudson? Come on. There may be some more favorable winds in the new park. Someone (I think randy) posted a link with photos showing the rightcenter fence being 9-10 ft closer than in the old park.

Even when he’s pitching a good game he still gives up pop ups and some fly balls. Just not that many.
It seemed his stuff got a LOT worse when he started pitching from the stretch. I’d like to see the pitchfx data for his first inning compared to second inning compared to last year and see how it looks. Maybe Eiland forgot to have him throw BP from the stretch?
Either way, Wang was bad which felt like a kick in the gut. He’s always been a favorite of mine and it’s really a bummer to see him struggle so much. Hopefully they can DL him with a phantom injury and send him to Nardi to get fixed. Kennedy or Aceves will at least give us a chance to win while Wang is “rehabbing”.

He didn’t have a “clean” first innings. The initial results may have been ok but he was still pitching poorly. All of his pitches were up in the zone.
And his release point in the first innings was as off as it was in his last game and in the second inning. No substantial difference.
It’s not mental. He simply has lost his mechanics.

And you have to wonder why Edwar is the one being thrown to the wolves. If anything it should be Veras. Girardi’s decision making has been terrible all season. Soon he’s gonna start feeling the heat from people wanting to let Pena take over for the rest of this season if he doesn’t shape up. His bullpen management and in particular his handling of Ramirez has been deplorable so far.
I truly hope the Yankees can fix any mechanical issues that are messing up CMW’s pitching, because this team needs him. He’s been a reliable and successful starter in the AL East, which is nothing to sneeze at. He’s young, a hard worker, extremely low maintenance, and respected by his teammates. If he can get his mojo back, he’s a big asset to a strong starting rotation. Plus, I like him and want him to do well lol. It’s way too early to pronounce him finished.

Wang’s problems remind me a lot of golf’s David Duval. Duval went from being the #2 ranked golfer in the world to being unable to make cuts.He had a few physical ailments,but he overcame them. However, once he lost his confidence he has never been the same. Like Duval, his past perfomance proves he has the talent. Like Duval, CMW’s biggest problem is between his ears.

Most likely because they don’t want to state the obvious and definitively tip off other teams what is going on. The second reason is that they don’t want to give the insane NY media specific ammunition to harp on.
If the Yankees’s came out and said publicly with that much granular information Wang’s release point is off the NY media would never, ever, ever let it go. They would harp on his release point before and after every start. The reporters would constantly badger him to death about it.
Those are the two reasons why.
There is ZERO benefit to the yankees making definite public statements regarding this problem other than it is not a physical injury.
Eiland made a point to say Wang had his stuff in the pen because he was answering a question about Wang being injured.
Outside of giving evidence that he’s not injured there no benefit whatsoever to Wang or the Yankees to publicly describe the problem.
This is one of those very common situations in sports where fans have incomplete information. So there are a range of possible reason.
The other hypothesis is that the yankees are simply stupid and don’t know the same things that fans posting on a baseball blog know.
That seems wildly implausible to me. I figured this out in 30s looking at some simple data. There is no way I have some special knowledge or insight into this situation that the yankees don’t.
Given that I believe the reason why they aren’t being more specific in public about this is for the first two reasons I described.
Why given any more insight to the competition and why give the media a talking point to constantly harp on and badger wang about.
Those seem to me to be far more probably reasons thant the yankees are simply stupid.
I personally don’t subscribe to the notion of dealing with situations in which information is incomplete by attributing stupidity to the other party.
But sports fans do this all the time. Kenny Williams is a good example. People are always essentially saying Williams is stupid because they don’t understand the logic of the esoteric moves he makes (e.g. Swisher for Betemit/Marquez).

It always seems that historically Wang struggles when guys are on base – not sure if its mental or if his delivery from the stretch is the culprit. I’d like to see the pitch f/x for Wang pitching from the stretch vs. wind-up.

I think you’re right, tampayank. This team has done a good job of responding so far this season. Having AJ start doesn’t hurt either.
We all know Jose Veras is skating on this ice. Edwar, I think, is past the thin ice stage. Pete had it – when they have HR derbies, Edwar should pitch because he gives up long ones. He doesn’t have a good enough fastball to complement his change, and keeps getting lit up. I don’t think they can keep him with this inconsistency.
So, Veras and Edwar should be voted off the island, and Robertson and Mark Melancon take their places. Any disagreements?
How about a deal of Veras, Edwar, and Jon Albaladejo (a ready make BP) for a useful player, maybe an young OF who could step into a starting role next year? I’d love a starting CF, but I don’t think that would happen.

Randy– IMO this problem stems back to the same thing that caused Hughes precipitous drop-off from his ‘06 season in AA to AAA, the pitching coach. It was Dave Eliand who tweaked Phil when he got to AAA and we saw him lose a couple of ticks on his fastball and be less effective. Now Wang’s mechanics are screwed up (I’m inclined to think thanks to big Dave Eliand) and we have Dave the butcher trying to fix it. Get Wang back to Tampa and I’d bet he could be back after missing only 1 or 2 starts.
That’s mostly speculation on my part but the chain of inferences is a reasonable one.

If Veras is on thin ice, Edwar shouldnt be past thin ice. Edwar is much more trustworthy than Veras.
The one positive i can take from this game is that it was blacked out and i can only listen to it. Its lessoned the torture.

Do you know what’s really pathetic, and most of all, gutless? Giving up on a 7-2 game with 8 at bats to go at home. The Red Sox were down like 8-0 yesterday and they came back and won. When Girardi brought Clagget in he was conceding the game. I’m not saying tax the hell out of your bullpen in April. But have faith that your other starters besides Wang will get some guys out in the next few games and don’t waive the white flag in 7-2 games in the 2nd inning. So ****ing weak.

Let me make this clearer and be more specific.
I have already looked at all of Wang’s release point data for inning one and compared it to inning two.
That was the first thing I did before drawing any conclusions.
Wang’s release point was not substantially different in inning one vs. inning two. No major difference at all.
Second, and no surprise, his pitches even in the first inning were up in the zone.
I then went back to his first two starts of this season and did the same comparisons. Again, no major difference in his release point or his ability to keep the ball down in the zone.
The reason why the first inning turned out relatively well may have simply been luck.
Or more likely the Indians were somewhat surprised to see Wang throwing such garbage.
But to say he was “clean” in the first inning is to simply focus on the outcome rather than the process of pitching.
That is no different than saying a pitcher pitched well because he won.
After the Indians got a brief look at that garbage Wang threw in inning one they reassessed and then raked him the following inning.
But if you look at the data the way he pitched and the quality of his pitches in inning one vs. inning two were not substantially different.
Well KO we only have 3 hits so it wouldn’t have been smart.

there are a lot of possible scenarios and outcomes that could happen with wang. the best one is that he gets his release point and his 91-93 mph sinker back.
i’m not thinking this is a difficult thing to do. i think he just needs to get back to basics.
i do wonder if someone named eiland has told him to raise his arm slot. if he is telling him to do that , that would explain the high arm slot.
i’m of the belief it a pitcher’s arm slot doesn’t go up there without a conscious effort to do so.
if there is a conscious effort to make it almost a foot higher, who’s behind that conscious effort? wang himself? eiland? someone else?

Who else could Girardi have brought in? He needed some innings. If Claggett could have given 3 or 4 scoreless innings, the game could be different. But you can’t kill the rest of the pen there. That’s why many of us think the Yankees need a long man.

Well, in his defense, not much he could do without a long man. He could have gone to his more seasoned relievers earlier, but still would have had to end up using Claggett at some point. Of course, he has only himself to blame for not having a long man for these exact situations.

Thanks for the explanation. The one thing that still bothers me is if it has nothing to do with his mental approach then why are his mechanics fine during bullpen and BP sessions? Is randy right, is Dave Eiland telling Wang to raise his release point? Or is he horribly incompetent and doesn’t notice it (I don’t believe this is true)? Option 3 would be that this is a mental problem.

It is important for the Yankees and Wang to know what the exact problem is so they can fix it. My point was that I don’t care to argue about it because it doesn’t matter to me that much. If he fixes the problem I’ll be happy, if he doesn’t I won’t.

The new stadium is making me nervous. I stopped watching a long time ago, but apparently even routine fly balls are becoming HRs and doubles. The Steinbrenners can’t be happy, the Yankee pitchers are not going to be happy -they’re going to have to move the walls back – something.
If I were the Yankees (or any team for that matter)…just run out a left handed line-up every day…

Think about this for a minute. Wang missed half of last season and is coming back from a serious injury to his plant foot.
During that come back the pitching coach has decided to throw some more balls in the air and told him to change his arm slot?
Pitching coaches are extremely hesitant to ever tell pitchers to change their arm slots. Ever. Because once you do that you are essentially erasing everything about the way that pitcher throws and telling him to scrap everything and start from zero.
Very good example of this is Mark Prior. After his first few injuries people started speculating that he was coming too over the top and that’s why he was hurt. Prior never changed his arm slot – nor did his coaches because that arm slot is what makes him successful and everything he knew about pitching was based on it.
Clay Buchholz partly got torched last year because his fastball is very flat. His fastball is very flat because he comes radically over the top. But that is the same reason why his change up is so good and why his curve is so good.
The Sox send him down and tried to get him to slightly tweak his arm slot becasue they knew what the problem with his fastball is.
But it’s not like they instructed him to move his release point 1 foot.
It stretches credulity to believe that with so much going on with Wang – his injury, his comeback, the need to build arm strenghth – that anyone would even conceive of messing with one of the most fundamental parts of a pitcher – his release point. Something teams rarely want to mess with.
One last thing – pitchers tend to drop their arm slots when they are tired. Is the fatigue that makes their slots drop.
What’s going on with Wang is entirely different.
Wang became successful at break neck speed once he picked up this one pitch.
Given that rapid ascension it seems to me that he doesn’t have a lot of explicit insight into the process of what made him successful. This happens with expertise all of the time. What makes an actor act well? Many times he or she has no idea.
Wang simply has lost his mechanics and I don’t think he’s ever developed a deep understanding of pitching. That’s why even before this if he couldn’t get the sinker working he struggled terribly.
Way too many HRs in this stadium….could end up being a very good thing for NYY (yesterday)….or a very bad thing (today).

Nick in Lake Tahoe — I would imagine it’s one of those things where a coach thinks their way of doing things is better than anybody else’s. Coaches are egotistical SOBs who get a belief in their head and it would take the jaws of life to pry it out.
Phil Hughes was the #1 pitching prospect in baseball with a 3/4 arm slot and someone decided he needed to be more “over the top” to help his curve ball. Well that resulted in losing his pinpoint control. Sure enough he’s back to 3/4 from what I understand.
Could be as simple as that. Eliand thought he could make Wanger better, and failed. Miserably. But then nobody from Yankeeland has said anything about the changed release point so I could just be showing my semi-dislike for Dave Eliand here. :shrug:
Good thing that Yankees didn’t take a long man out of spring training. Now the bullpen is entirely toast. I remain dumbfounded that the Yankees still haven’t called up someone from Scranton who can give them innings. If Wang gets another start I will be amazed. Let him work out the kinks in Scranton, and if he can’t be designated, out of the bullpen, where the incredible damage can at least be managed.

Why, oh why, are you all hating on it just because it’s a hitters’ ballpark, and only probably? There’s nothing wrong with hitters’ ballparks, and it’s far too soon to conclude anything yet. It seems like a hitters’ ballpark but after five games it could very well be an aberration.
A game like this really makes you reflect. Now thinking about this team honestly the holes are gaping: No OF depth, hitting on life-support, many injuries, Matsui finished, still no A-Rod, only 2 starters are feeling it, the bullpen beyond Bruney and Mo is frightening, no hitting with RISP, bad ballpark to pitch in favors hitting, hitting that we don’t have. I really am pulling the plug and I know I will face heat for this but just seeing the new park in action this week has me thinking, can we really out-slug our opponents? I don’t think so. 87 wins 3rd in AL East calling it.
