If someone missed it. This is the video of Swish announcing the lineup from Saturdays game on Fox. He is absolutely hysterical.

The pitching matchups have sweep written all over it……GB7, yesterday we were talking about the 64 Yanks and how the lack of a 8th / 9th inning closer cost them the series…..You mentioned Pedro Ramos…My question is he the same Ramos who pitched for the Senators and challenged Mantle to a footrace ????

I think he will. That is, if they do get to play tomorrow. If not, Tuesday it is!

  18. CaptainsCorner April 19th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

Someone should make a shirt with the picture of Swish pitching on the front, with “we want Swisher on the back”. It was funny watching it 1 time, but hopefully we don’t see it again because that means they are getting blown out again.

    ————————————————————

Yeah, PAT M, it’s the same one. Pete was lightening fast and a pretty good pitcher, but, man, could he hit and for power. He just pitched for bad teams. Ramos is also the pitcher that Mantle hit his first Facade shot off of in 1956.

Mike’d Up time. Francesa looks serious. So “the stadium is an absolute joke.”

Applause I can understand but a standing ovation?

Francessa-You can’t win a championship with a ballpark that plays this way…LOL..I guess he doesn’t know that the Phillies did last year.

  25. Uncle Ellsworth April 19th, 2009 at 11:42 pm

eight and a half minutes! oh the humanity!

  26. Wats April 19th, 2009 at 11:43 pm

so what happens if tomorrow gets rained out and theres a double header tuesday? pitch wang vs. the sox on friday, or saturday?

  27. Betsy April 19th, 2009 at 11:44 pm

Fan Zone, I do think Yankee fans have taken to AJ – both for his pitching and stuff like kissing Swisher, lol. That said, yes – I expect them to boo the heck out of him whene he seriously blows up (as will happen to any pitcher). They’ll boo CC, they’ve already booed Tex. I wonder if he and CC are disappointed that the passionate crowds they expected to pitch in front of have not materialized……not that it matters in the long run.

M, the FB adds to AJ’s mystique, but also the fact that he is a good old country boy as he describes himself. His whole body is tattooed, lol – he looks like a complete rebel, yet oddly he’s pretty quiet. I don’t think fans knew what to expect of him, but he’s the guy that bought Tex cake and balloons for his birthday and who’s learning Chinese so that he can communicate with Wang. I find him incredibly interesting……and I’m still waiting for him to pie someone, lol.

Joba and Swish together? They need their own plane – I’d be bouncing off the walls if they sat together during a flight to or from the West Coast.

  28. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down. April 19th, 2009 at 11:45 pm

So, according to Francesa team itself is okay, ballpark is a disastah.

8 and a half minutes! oh no! You go out for a sandwich?

    :|

  29. Betsy April 19th, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Francesca “incensed” by the way the stadium is playing……..though he doesn’t blame anyone – he just thinks it needs to be fixed. He thinks the pitchers may become demoralized by easy FBs turning into HRs……..and I think he could be right

  30. Neil April 19th, 2009 at 11:46 pm

3 lefties could mean trouble considering we dont have many RH hiters w nady and A-rod out. Ransom will certainly start all 3 games. They could even send down a pitcher and call-up Shelly Duncan to replace Nady. Duncan does hit lefties pretty good and is certainly a clubhouse favorite.

  31. Uncle Ellsworth April 19th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Giambi will be treated nicely – I will be there tuesday I’ll show some love.

People are always talking about sample size here:

Are 4 games really a significant sample size.

    It’ll all work out.

BTW M. Fran has this show in a good spot and this show stinks – like we don’t hear enough of him all week?
how bout a guest – blah blah blah

  32. EdFl April 19th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Gb7, I mentioned yesterday Pedro Ramos lives in Miami. He still drives a big Cadillac, while selling his ” Ramos Cigars”. Father Time has forced Pedro to drive with a beautiful young girl as his driver. At least that was the last time I saw him, a couple of years ago. He loves Mantle, Plenty of funny Yankee stories.

  33. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down. April 19th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

I forgot the NFL draft is this Saturday. Time for Francesa to break it all down. I wonder if he ever made up with Bill Parcells yet.

  34. CaptainsCorner April 19th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

As far as the wind goes someone mentioned before that the Great Hall doesn’t have any windows. I wonder if that has anything to do with some of the wind? If so they can put windows in there. Also in the upper deck under the frieze is all open so you can put plexi glass there. Otherwise the only other thing they can do is in the off season move RF back like 3 or 4 rows. But then the whole bullpen would be messed up.

  35. Uncle Ellsworth April 19th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

any way the wind blows doesn’t really matter to me

  36. PAT M April 19th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

If there is to be any alterations, it’s goinf to happen after the old building is down….I asked earlier if anyone that has been to the park noticed if there is wind blowing thru the great hall….All the catherdral arches are open, which I thought was odd to begin with……As Captains Corner pointed out ( the first to do so ) the upper deck back wall is open, so there’s certainly wind activity….Those are the only real differences from the old Stadium….They are basically seated in the same direction, so those two mentioned items are the most likely source for wind activities

  37. Uncle Ellsworth April 20th, 2009 at 12:04 am

Pat M Apparently it is all open The hall and the concourses.

    ————————————————————

Ed, I read that. Pretty interesting. He was quite a jokester and even on different teams, he and Mantle were pretty close. Mantle used to hammer him, though. Him and Camilo Pasqual. I think everybody has Mantle stories…because nobody can think of another ballplayer that didn’t almost idolize him, even though they were pretty much the same age. They also admired him for going through the torture of preparing for a game. During All-Star games, Kaline said he himself would almost have tears in his eyes watching Mantle wrap both legs from toe to thigh.

    miggs-no idea.

When he gave his strange “state of the union regarding the best sports radio show in nyc” and spilled the beans about not talking to Tuna, I don’t remember him saying exactly what happened.

Just that him and Bill have not spoken for about 6 months. They had some sort of falling out.

Hope those two kids get everything straightened out and make up. :P

  46. miggs April 20th, 2009 at 12:35 am

    That commercial is priceless.

Parcells looks almost exactly the same now, maybe 20 pounds heavier.

Francesa looks like a total clown with that hair and those awful glasses. He also looks about 25 years older now.

Not sure when that commercial was shot but still.

  47. miggs April 20th, 2009 at 12:41 am

It would be nice to get that game in tomorrow.

If not I’ll be curious to see what Girardi does with the rotation. Throw Wang on Wednesday against the light hitting A’s? That’s better than getting destroyed in fenway. He should be well rested, he’s thrown only 6 innings all year.

No offense to Wang. Just sayin’…..

I’m working on this tedious project right now that needs to be done in the next few days and I was counting on this blog to keep me distracted when I needed a break.

This place seems really dead tonight. At least I know SA and Uncle Ellsworth are checking in periodically.

Last night there was great convo and debate, tonight not so much.

  51. Uncle Ellsworth April 20th, 2009 at 12:53 am

miggs it was pretty good til about an hour ago.

we were discussing Wang on Wednesday in the last thread- hope they do it

  52. miggs April 20th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Uncle the ideal thing I think is to skip him. If the rainout forces their hand, its either gotta be him or someone else. And really Wed. or Fri. seem to be the only logical choices.

I haven’t really scanned through the comments from before but I thought I’d get killed for bringing the idea of Wang on Wed. up.

That’s, what, 3 days rest. He’s a sinkerball pitcher anyway. Maybe it helps him. Who knows?

  53. Uncle Ellsworth April 20th, 2009 at 1:01 am

    “who knows?” exactly.

  54. Giuseppe Franco April 20th, 2009 at 1:04 am

It’s probably more likely that they skip Wang’s turn. Even more so if they get rained out tomorrow night.

They won’t be playing any doubleheaders in April. They would prefer to make it up when the weather is warm and the kids are out of school.

That would also add to the total of home games A-Rod gets to play in.

The Yanks as it is only plays a total of 8 games at home in April. They should have A-Rod back for 70+ games in the Bronx, which is not a bad trade off if that place does indeed turn out to be a launching pad.

  55. Uncle Ellsworth April 20th, 2009 at 1:23 am

OK…so we’re back on track once we get 2 of 3. Just gotta figure out WTF is wrong with Wang.

Also….I agree TB had a great year last year, but c’mon, everytime they win, and Longoria gets a hit, ESPN makes it sound like they are 13-0!

  57. KO April 20th, 2009 at 3:10 am

    Who can tell Wang?

  59. crawdaddie April 20th, 2009 at 5:15 am

If the game is rained out today, they can play the game on Thursday afternoon. If they wait until Oakland come back in town after the all-star break then they run into issues regarding Oakland playing too many consecutive games.

  60. Doreen - You can tell it's me by all the smileys April 20th, 2009 at 6:47 am

    Captain’s Corner -

Thanks for that video of Swish. I had missed it. He’s a natural, isn’t he? It was great.

  61. Doreen April 20th, 2009 at 7:11 am

    miggs -

I think Wang on shorter rest is not a bad idea. I also do not want to see him pitch against the Red Sox. No how, no way. But if they do that, then they need someone already warmed up and ready to go and I don’t care if they have to warm that person up in the clubhouse out of Wang’s sight to preserve his psyche. ‘Cause they can’t take a chance of another game getting out of hand early.

I’m wondering if they have showed Wang the side-by-side comparison of last year to this year? That really makes it clear exactly what’s changed. Yesterday I flippantly said that Wang must be in denial, but on reflection, I think it IS certainly more difficult to notice problems the closer you are to them. And he may not FEEL like he’s doing anything different. The important thing thus far is the Yankees do see the differences so they can work pointedly on fixing the mechanics. Wang just needs to buy in, and I think he will.

I am so glad they won yesterday.

I am so tired of hearing about the way the balls flew out of here the other day. My opinion is that at least half of those homeruns were a direct result of poor pitching. I don’t doubt that there is something to the ball carrying, but I think you have to wait and see as the season progresses and as some better pitched games take place to make a definitive statement. Also, I think if the Yankees end up taking advantage of the situation more than their opponents, you’ll find fewer complaints. After all, the day before the blowout, the Yankees had 5 homeruns, and while there were some rumblings about the “magical jet stream,” it wasn’t until the Indians were the beneficiaries that the rumblings became earthquakian.

And it would seem that good pitching will neutralize the effect. Carmona did not have a problem, certainly, nor did Pavano, apparently. I wasn’t able to watch yesterday’s game so I can’t say about AJ.

  62. Joe April 20th, 2009 at 7:34 am

Hold the sweep talk for a couple days…Anderson is VERY good.

  63. Mike April 20th, 2009 at 7:54 am

Yeah. . lets hold off the sweep talk .. We have to take this one game at a time ! .

  64. ellen April 20th, 2009 at 8:12 am

The weather forecast looks awful for tonight.

  65. Kevin (not the journalist) April 20th, 2009 at 8:14 am

I honestly hope tonight’s game does not get rained out as if it does the chances of us seeing Wang pitch this time around increase dramatically and quite frankly I do not trust him to pitch against Oakland. If it does get rained I say we call up Hughes to pitch because we can not give up another game automatically as it may not seem like it in April, but the games that Wang has pitched horribly may mean the difference of making the playoffs and not making the playoffs

  66. RhapsodyInBlue April 20th, 2009 at 8:19 am

Can’t they send Wang down to Tampa for onr start to analyze his form and sinker, to work on his mechanics?

    Is he out of options?

  67. ellen April 20th, 2009 at 8:20 am

Yep, Wang is out of options. And he can’t accept an assignment because he doesn’t have enough service time.

  68. BD April 20th, 2009 at 8:23 am

Attributing every home run to the new stadium is sort of like attributing every hot summer day to global warming.

How is the lo hud schitzo blog this morning???

  71. RussW210 April 20th, 2009 at 8:36 am

Just throwing these two out there: I heard yesterday the Mets have left 100 men on base so far this season. 3rd most in the majors, anyone know the other two? (I don’t)

    The Arizona Diamondbacks have played 12 games this year and scored this many runs: 9, 0, 2, 9, 2, 1, 1, 7, 0, 2, 0.

The team is killing Dan Haren in fantasy. But the trend shows they should score 7+ runs again soon :)

  72. Betsy April 20th, 2009 at 8:39 am

I don’t get it – what was the media watching yesterday? All of the articles today are about how the Yankees got helped by a fan – I’m sorry, but that was clearly a HR.

  73. Coach6423 April 20th, 2009 at 8:42 am

I wouldnt say clearly Betsy, but based on the fact it was called a HR on the field, it was impossible to overturn. The ball actually never left the yard.

  74. jennifer April 20th, 2009 at 8:47 am

The fan with the glove whiffed on it. It went between his arms and hit the top of the fence. Than it bounced back on the field.

  75. jennifer April 20th, 2009 at 8:47 am

Oh it also hit him in the chest.

  76. Dr. Cox April 20th, 2009 at 8:51 am

Actually Coach, It was clearly a home run. If you look closely the ball hit the fan in the bicep area which was above the fence.

Could the ball have been robbed? Perhaps.

But it was certainly a home run.

  77. Coach6423 April 20th, 2009 at 8:51 am

I am happy it was ruled a HR, I can also see both sides to the argument.

  78. Eyes April 20th, 2009 at 8:52 am

The fan reached beyond the top of the fence (into the field of play) and contacted Crowe’s glove. Crowe would have caught the ball if the fan hadn’t reached OVER the fence. It was clearly fan interference, because Crowe was NOT reaching into the stands …. he was reaching straight up.

Botched call, and the Fox announcers both saw it as an easy call of fan interference.

  79. Coach6423 April 20th, 2009 at 8:53 am

All the replays TBS showed did nothing to help the case of it being a HR. The fan was clearly leaning forward, and Indians players glove was going back. They collided, where they collided is hard to tell because of the front on replay. Nothing was really clear about that play at all. If it had been called interference on the field, there is no way that would have been a HR.

  80. Dr. Cox April 20th, 2009 at 8:55 am

That being said, something has to be done about this new stadium and the homeruns.

20 homeruns in 4 games in unacceptable.

  81. Coach6423 April 20th, 2009 at 8:58 am

What would you like them to do…..

  82. ellen April 20th, 2009 at 8:58 am

It will be interesting to see if the home runs continue at this crazy pace. Assuming the architects know what can be done to modify the stadium – and that the Yankees want it modified – is it true that they can’t do anything (by MLB rules) until the off-season?

  83. Dr. Cox April 20th, 2009 at 8:59 am

“The fan reached beyond the top of the fence (into the field of play) and contacted Crowe’s glove. Crowe would have caught the ball if the fan hadn’t reached OVER the fence. It was clearly fan interference, because Crowe was NOT reaching into the stands …. he was reaching straight up.

Watch it again. The ball hit the upper bicep of the fan right below his shoulder. There was no way he was leaning over THAT much that his arm was dangling shoulder legnth over the fence. The ball was over the fence when it hit the fan.

After it went over the fence, yes, Crowe could have caught it, but at that point it was already a homerun.

I have no reason to argue this. The game is long over and we won, but I have repeatedly watchted the replay and even my best friends from Cleveland admit its a home run. (I graduated from Ohio University, so I just LOVE Indians/Yankees series.)

I think it was a homerun and they got it right. As a fan I don’t think you should be reaching over the wall like the kid did for Jeter all those years ago, but it is part of baseball to reach up and grab the ball.

  85. RussW210 April 20th, 2009 at 9:03 am

Why don’t they just make the rule:

If a fan can reach and grab it then its a homerun. Then every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday at Yankee Stadium have “Fishnet Day” for front row bleacher seats.

“As a fan I don’t think you should be reaching over the wall like the kid did for Jeter all those years ago, but it is part of baseball to reach up and grab the ball.”

I totally agree, Russ. It would have been really easy to put some separation between the seats and the wall (like two walls with some space between them), if the Yankees had wanted to.

Obviously nothing can be done this season. But somehow plug those “vents” underneath the facade. There are much, much more in this stadium then the old one. Also, once the old stadium get knocked down the wind off the harlem river with flow at a more fluid rate.

There are many other things they can do. I am not the engineer.

  88. Ryan(Im just waiting till the shine wears off) April 20th, 2009 at 9:08 am

The ball clearly bounced off the fan in the gray shirts stomach after hitting off of crowes glove. Since the fan’s stomach was in the stands and out of play it was clearly a homerun.

  89. Coach6423 April 20th, 2009 at 9:10 am

Let’s give it more than 4 games before we decide if its going to be a launching pad. If the numbers continue this way, then maybe something needs to be done.

  90. Eyes April 20th, 2009 at 9:11 am

Dr. Cox – (1) The fan’s glove hit the fielder’s glove while the fielder’s glove was in the field of play. The fan reached INTO the field of play. (2) The fielder would have caught the ball if his glove hadn’t been deflected.

That is the definition of fan interference. Where the ball was going to land, or did land, is secondary to the fan intruding on the field of play and interfering with what would have been a catch.

If the fielder has to reach into the stands, it is different. Crowe was reaching straight up.

  91. RussW210 April 20th, 2009 at 9:11 am

Yes Ryan – and as you can see from the picture the fan reached more to his side than over the wall to grab the ball.

There’s no reason why Wang can’t fly to Tampa for a few days just to have a few sessions with Nardi Contreras then come back to test out what he learned with 2-3 relief appearances and see if there’s a difference.

The fan’s name is Brian Doyle. How funny is that?

  94. Ryan(Im just waiting till the shine wears off) April 20th, 2009 at 9:18 am

Brian Doyle like the baseball skills teacher in florida? Some teammates and I went to him during spring break for a showcase during high school.

There was nothing “clear” about the replay and whatever the call had been could be agreed to or argued with but not changed based on replay. the outfielder’s glove DID break the plane and go into the stands, the ball did appear to hit the fan with the glove on the arm or chest but it’s not completely clear. That’s the joy of a two-dimensional replay of a three dimensional event.

For anyone to insist that the call was “clear” is nonsense. I could argue for HR, Live Ball or fan interference with equal enthusiasm.

Wang threw 52 pitches Saturday so starting him Wednesday or Thursday would not be a problem.

This hysteria over the stadium after four games is just plain craziness. You have to go through multiple series with a variety of opponents, weather conditions and umpiring crews before drawing any conclusions.

For example— In the first nine games Yankees pitchers and their opponents combined to walk 6.5 batters a game. In the Cleveland series they walked almost 12 a game. Tiny strike zones lead to hitters ahead in the count and more big swings. Let’s see how the stadium plays without those four dipsticks calling the games.

I think the stadium will play well for hitters going to RF just as it did before, but until the old place comes down and there’s a larger sample of games/circumstances to evaluate it’s inane to reach any conclusions.

    ——————————————————————————————
They have 5 switch hitters plus Jeter and Ransom. How many right handers do they need? Damon and Cano can hit anybody.
    =====================================
Was chuckling yesterday when they brought in Perez to pitch to Cano and Matsui.

  98. Ryan(Im just waiting till the shine wears off) April 20th, 2009 at 9:32 am

-This is pointless but after Crowe jumped his arm hit the wall and his glove bent back to attempt to make the catch. When the arm bends as a result of the wall that is no longer in play.

-I also agree that this talk of bandbox is premature. We need a bigger sample size.

  99. RussW210 April 20th, 2009 at 9:45 am

Bruney said Wang could be favoring his recovered foot. That could be the problem.

  100. JohnC April 20th, 2009 at 9:49 am

If tonights game gets rained out and they do make it up on Thursday, who starts that Saturday game in Boston? Burnett starts game 1, Pettite would be in turn to pitch the Sunday night game, but do they dare start Wang on Saturday against Beckett, or do they call up Hughes to make that start?

“They could even send down a pitcher and call-up Shelly Duncan to replace Nady. Duncan does hit lefties pretty good and is certainly a clubhouse favorite.”

Oh boy, I would love to see Swisher and Duncan in the same dugout.
