Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption
April 20th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Bodh—Tabata hasn’t looked very good in his first 9 games in Altoona himself. Seems like he’s back up to the same tricks he started last year in Trenton.
.235—.333—.294 Power is still illusive.
==================================
Having actually seen Tabata play numerous times, his current numbers wouldn't concern me if he were still ours. You DON'T trade a bat like that. Just as Cashman steadfastly refused to trade Cano, although nearly everyone on here, and his brother, wanted him dealt.

Tabata is 20 years old. He is a very talented hitter. The trade was a joke. Nady and Marte?? Marte is awful vs. patient AL lineups. Nady is neither a great hitter or fielder, he's a guy with some RH power and not great patience.

You DON'T trade Tabata for these guys - especially when you consider our crop of A-list OF prospects are still at least a few years away, minus AJax and his 2010 ETA. (Sosa, Urena, DeLeon, Duran, Almonte)

"That’s two pretty good outings in a row for Brackman, but I think it’s 2011 before he’s close to being a contributor in the bigs."

---------------

I agree. There's just quite a bit of pressure involved.

If Brackman has any hiccups whatsoever, he'll quite possibly be a free agent or 1 year from free agency before the Yankees even know what they have.

I hope he can rise quickly.

"But they were both pretty much epic fails as soon as they arrive in the Bronx."

-------------

I'll always be puzzled by Igawa but I can't blame the Yankees for Pavano. He was the top free agent pitcher that many teams wanted and they got him for a market deal.

If the Yankees were able to sign the consensus top free agent pitcher every offseason to a market value contract, is that a bad thing?

That one just didn't work out.

The strategy wasn't as flawed as the outcome. Igawa is another story.

"It’s just very odd for a pitcher with his record to be hit at a .600 clip."

---------

It's not that odd. If he throws his sinker properly, he's ok. If not, well...

If Tim Wakefield couldn't throw his knuckleball, Hoffman his changeup, etc

when you rely on 1 pitch and it's not working, you in trubba.

And I love the Yankees, and it's true the Sox wanted Pavano too. Not sure what the allure was with Igawa beyond keeping up with the Joneses. And hindsight is 20/20. But they were both pretty much epic fails as soon as they arrive in the Bronx.

"The strange thing about Wang is how different he can look from one start to the next against the same team…"

------------

though true, it's always tougher to face a club a second time within a week or so.

The Sox have tried to make adjustments against Wang (quite possibly immediately after that start) by moving up in the box.

I personally think when Wang is 'good' he's one of the more consistent guys around.

In fact, he was the staff savior for a while. They could always count on him to go late into games with a low pitch count and save their bullpen after the previous pitcher had gotten rocked (the role AJ is playing right now thanks to CMW)

ray (sox fan): If the entire $50 million had been used to buy enough gummi bears to stock the stadium concession stands for the rest of the century, it would STILL have been better value for the money than spending it on the Kei-Man. It's a toss-up between him and the Idle for worst return on an investment this side of the stock market.

"Unfortunately, that’s the way a large contingent of Yankee fans are. Some people have zero concept of the big picture."

------------

I can understand, though I don't agree, with the skepticism of guys like Gardner who still have much to prove.

It amazes me that some fans can turn on a guy who has years of performance standing behind him after a few bad games though.

After reading game threads over the past several years, however, I become less and less amazed. It's just the way some people are -

panic-mongering lunatics.

"I agree that 100 million was a lot to spend on Dice-K, but I think that 100 million was far better spent than the 50 million that the Yankees spent on Igawa.

What have you guys really got so far for that 50 million?"

----------

ray,

no doubt (though with time value of money the $$ spent on Daisuke is closer to $135-150M over 6 years).

I definitely wasn't saying that the Yankees moves were good or the Sox bad. Just that you can play the "hindsight" game with anybody.
