The recession is over

Nick Swisher will ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. according to the Yankees.

The market has to go up, right? Either that or Swish will try to talk to every trader, they’ll forget their jobs and we’ll all be lining up for government cheese in a week.

Yankees are charging $20 for Yankees grass seed. (small bag about 3 handfulls)
One of the more disturbing things I saw last night.

Uncle Elseworth- I bet Harold Reynolds would pay double for that. The other day he said that the one thing players remember from playing at Yankee stadium is the Green grass. Someone email him and let him know its now for sale to the public.

S.o.S.: since Pete is seeing Springsteen tonight, blinded fans are welcome in this thread as long as they’re blinded by the light and cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night. Whatever the heck *that* means.

    SoS
I actually need some seed. If it was $5 I would have bought it and saved a trip to HD.
As for Reynolds I’d say -The grass is ALWAYS greener in the Bronx.

    From prior thread:

Pat M, I take it you don’t have a problem with Joe leaving CC in there? I’m consistent – I didn’t love it when he did it with AJ and I didn’t love it today. Every pitcher wants to stay in the game – they are competitiors. You can’t leave it up to them to decide. I’m thinking of CC’s arm (and AJ’s). You know about his workload last year and it’s only April this year. I don’t see any reason to push it with him. As well, this could be symptomatic of Joe’s lack of trust in his pen……and if that’s the case, we have a real problem. Wouldn’t you agree?

Uhh o.k. Nick. Are you trying to sing me a springstein song? If that was a test to see if im a Springsteen fan. I failed miserably. NO is my final answer. Born in USA is the only thing i thought he sang. Oh one more that Jerry Mcguire song Secret garden(had to try to sing it in my head. Hope i nailed the title).

  22. Doreen April 22nd, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Jeter said he didn’t think he could get the double play at first, saw Giambi break late and threw home. He said the only problem was that none of his teammates were there to catch the ball. And thankfully it didn’t end up hurting them. He was smiling as he talked about it.

  24. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Great win today! Funny thing was I put Melky in for Matsui this week in my fantasy league and was regretting that after Matsui hit the first HR, but the Melkman finished with two HR’s including the walkoff!

It’s nice to see him back in the mix, but let’s not hand him a starting job just yet. He is the perfect fourth outfielder.

  25. m April 22nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm

    So what did I miss?

Sounds like players of the game were Jeter, Veras, and Melky.

Good for Melky. But if he said anything unsportsmanlike that was picked by a mic, I’ll be disappointed.

I’m glad they won because the one step forward, one step backward thing drives me nuts. And it keeps us one step ahead of Boston. For now.

  26. Joe April 22nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm

CC threw 112 pitches, you’re making it sound like he threw 140

CC or AJ are not Santana or Roy Halladay… they’re not going to get easy, effortless outs often. They’re going to work most of the time, thats what their game is, as is the game of most power/strikeout guys. If you want them out after 100, they’re not going to go beyond 6 innings, 75% of the time.

This is his 4th start, it’s not like it’s opening day. CC earned his rep as a workhorse because of his ability to throw a lot pitches, not because of his efficincey ike Halladay).

  27. Pat M April 22nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Betsy, it’s a fine line that a mgr. must walk….He’s paid to win games, and manage players….112 pitcehes is not really that many…..At seasons end it’s all about innings thrown….The balancing act at this time of the season is how long do you stick with your starter, and when to use the bullpen and still give your club the best chance to win….Arm strength comes with throwing, and the weather wasn’t that terrible today…..We have the luxury of sitting back and 2nd guessing every move….It’s gut feelings guided by not so perfect calculations…CC is an Ace Strting pitcher, you stay with him….I mean 12 extra pitches equates to a extra hitter….Even with tomorrow being an off day, I like how Giradi manage today’s game, especially the platooning of Melky and Gardner….The audution continues…..

  30. gayle April 22nd, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Don’t fool yourselves really what Nick is doing there is schilling for those empty field level seats you watch he will sell a bunch of them.

Also based on Tex’s comments re tThe Red SOx I think the speculation about ownership getting in he way of Epstein really does come through in his quotes. He very much complimented the way that Theo handled everything and very convieniently leaving out ownership.

  31. Bronx Jeers April 22nd, 2009 at 8:05 pm

    Thanks Doreen,

I had a hard time figuring out why Jeter would want his catcher standing between Giambi and home plate.

  32. m April 22nd, 2009 at 8:05 pm

Huh, 2 Yankee fans named Brandon. What are the odds? :)

Taking a look at the box score. Very nice work out of the bullpen. Lots of 0′s. I saw Veras’ first inning and was not pleased, but it looks like he took one for the team.

  38. K-Zone April 22nd, 2009 at 8:10 pm

If CC had thrown a scoreless inning, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

Joe is simply trying to feel out his starters to see how they pitch late in the game. This is what managers do in April. 112 is not a lot at all, especially for CC. Look at his game logs from previous years. This is what CC does, you can’t treat him like Mussina.

Very rarely will a starter have a game like Burnett had against Tampa. Most games are battles.

    pat,

From the game thread, someone said they heard Melky talking to Cano after the game. Something about “if they want to put a track star in CF”. Don’t know if it’s legit, just saying that if Melky’s got that attitude where he has to say something like “take that” while still on the field of play, that’s bad IMO.

  43. Todd April 22nd, 2009 at 8:13 pm

  47. Night Owl April 22nd, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Another awful crowd today. About 100 people in extra innings. Legends empty as usual. This is becoming a real problem.

CC got booed pretty loudly though.

  48. Uncle Ellsworth April 22nd, 2009 at 8:19 pm

  53. trisha - click to see Opening Day pictures April 22nd, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Nick in SF, let me try to help you out here. Webster’s definition of loyal is “unswerving in allegiance”. As I said, you’re either loyal or you’re not. If you’re unswerving in allegiance, you really cannot be “blindly” so since “unswerving” doesn’t allow much wiggle room.

It has nothing to do with thinking “scrubs” (that says it all as far as I’m concerned) are all stars. I wouldn’t know anything about that by the way since I don’t know any “scrubs” who are playing in the Bronx. It has to do with the ability to root your guys on and support them whether they are having Babe Ruth/Cy Young games or whether they are having the worst games of their lives. That’s the definition of unswerving allegiance.

You can’t accuse some of the lohud posters of being loyal to the Yankees if they are ready to dump them and dump on them when things don’t go their way. Sorry, that’s not being loyal.

That, of course, differs from feeling disappointment in the way someone may be playing but being right there to root the person on despite that disappointment. N.ot everyone on the lohud blog is that evolved.

By the way, I did bring up the topic of fan loyalty and was merely responding to Pat M’s observation about blind loyalty. I told him that I believed there was no such thing, you were either loyal or you were not. I didn’t intend to get into a debate over it and am only responding to what you said because I do not believe you are correct in your observation that someone can be “blindly” loyal.

The whole topic, by the way, has little to do with pessimism. Betsy is one of the most pessimistic posters I know, but also one of the most loyal.

    Around the system:

Charleston has a 5-1 lead. Manny Banuelos is pitching great against Augusta. He’d have a shutout except for a misplayed fly to Melky Mesa in deep left. Augusta scored the run, but, Mesa made up for it with a 3 run homer. Banuelos has a line of 5 innings, 3 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Angelini has 1 hit and run scored. Honest Abe Almonte and Taylor Grote have a hit and run scored.

In Tampa, Tampa leads 4-3. Bleich pitching, but getting hit. 4 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs (earned) 1 walk, 1 strikeout.

Sublett, Fryer, Rufino and Romine doing the hitting.
Rufino 2 with a double and 2 RBI, Fryer with one (triple), Sublett has a double (run scored) and an error, Romine with a single and double with 2 runs scored.

For Trenton, it’s 3-2 Trenton. Kontos in 5 innings, only 2 hits but 2 runs (earned) 4 walks, 7 strikeouts.

Corona has 2 hits and an RBI, Cervelli has a hit and RBI, and Eduardo Nunez has a hit, but also his 7th error at shortstop.

Hughes has been great. 6 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts. 79 pitches, 58 strikes, 21 balls.

Jackson is 0-2 and 1 strikeout.

Teams just go into Fenway and forget how to play baseball.

Joe and Pat M – good points. I’m just trying to be careful with the arms…….but on the other hand, I don’t want to baby them either. In any case, I’m looking forward to the big fella finding his groove. With his struggles, Wang’s absymal performances, the up and down nature of the pen, Ransom’s bad imitation of a major leaguer, and Tex’s injury, it’s amazing we are 9-6. The Sox look like they’ve found their groove again, too – unfortunately. Huge series coming up – looking forward to it.

These empty seats have become a national punchline now. Even news outlets have started to mention it.

Today’s turnout was just a disgrace though. It was like a Marlins game.

  76. Doreen April 22nd, 2009 at 8:43 pm

It’s funny, because I was thinking for such a lousy weather day, a weekday game against the A’s, that there were more people than I expected, and they were a pretty vocal crowd. But if you noticed, the bleachers were less than full, too.

I really hope that every home game isn’t going to include extensive commentary about the number of empty seats. Especially after it had been discussed a lot prior to the game.

You can’t accuse some of the lohud posters of being loyal to the Yankees if they are ready to dump them and dump on them when things don’t go their way. Sorry, that’s not being loyal.

    —————

Trish- I have to disagree in regards to dumping on. I remember screaming(cuss words) to my t.v. screen when Soriano couldnt hit the side of a barn and decided to try to set a strikeout record in the playoffs. Or everytime Alex didnt come through in a playoff game. Every time Pavano was allowed to stand on the mound representing the Yanks. My point is everyone expresses themselves differently. Doesnt make one better than the other.

Now I do have a problem with people saying the game is over after we got down by a run in the second inning. Its almost like they think its a soccer game.

  91. Clark April 22nd, 2009 at 8:49 pm

    Joe’s BP management has fine.

He has given guys chances to pitch important innings. Bruney seized the opportunity. Veras hasn’t. Albaladjeo has pitched well and Joe has started to use him in high leverage situations these last couple of days. He trusted Coke too much early on and now has scaled him back but is still using him. Marte has been awful this past week, as has Edwar though neither has gotten much work.

Part of the problem is that all of our games have either been close wins or blowout losses (with no long man). So Joe hasn’t had a real opportunity to see what he has in mid-leverage situations.

  94. Bronx Jeers April 22nd, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Ransom’s kind of a scrub no?

There is such a thing as blind loyalty. We generally refer to it as chauvinism. It’s loyalty to the point that it becomes a fault.

That being said, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with rooting your butt off even in the worst of times with the Yankees down 22-4. I don’t personally do it myself but I see nothing wrong with it.

On the other hand, I do feel it’s wrong to call people names if they are critical of something. It’s pseudo-censorship in my opinion.

Had a chance to sit and talk with Wang, who is flying to Tampa this afternoon and will pitch in an extended spring game tomorrow. (The plan is for him to rejoin the Yankees Friday in Boston.) He knows he has work to do. He says his confidence remains intact. He is aware of his mechanical flaws, which result in his arm dragging behind his body. (He said the same thing after his bullpen last week in Tampa and then Saturday’s outing was a disaster.) He says he is not pushing off on his right foot with enough intensity but insists the foot feels fine. He doesn’t believe this is a mental byproduct from him being injured; I suspect that could be debated.

**I’m glad AJ etc……..are keeping Wang relatively upbeat. I would love to hear AJ trying to speak Chinese….if that does nothing else, it will make Wang laugh. I’m also glad that Wang doesn’t appear to have lost any confidence……that would be problematic as it’s not so easy to put those pieces back together (much easier to fix mechanics_)

  104. Andrew April 22nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Watching Pena… he has no chance against ML pitching. He can’t catch up to the power stuff up here. A decent FB/breaking ball will own him.

Atleast Ransom can handle the bat somewhat and hit mistake pitches. That’s why he is playing.

  105. TD April 22nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

This does not have to be such a big problem…

Who is in charge of stadium seating…Levine?…ultimately Hal?

They can fix this and should do it fast. Before the 4 day homestand against Red Sox.

They need to offer up empties…to the season ticket holders who got screwed with new seat assignments this year… and others who are willing to pay an upcharge at the gate.

Call them and invite them down to sit in these seats to appreciate the game, and make some noise.

Someone posted that people in those seats did not even stand up when Melky hit the GW homerun?

Were they too busy “passing the grey poupon?”

    Something is wrong here.

  106. miggs April 22nd, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Well Hughes has a stellar outing.

Funny how that works, Yankees haven’t announced Tuesday’s starter yet. It would be Wang’s turn. Cashman has been VERY hesitant when asked about Wang’s return to the rotation. Talking about arm strength and having the trainers check him out.

Sounds to me like they may make a change. Tuesday would be Hughes pitching on 5 days rest. I love Wang and I think he’ll be ok, but maybe he needs some time to work it out.

Also, stayed til the end of the game today. Even though a lot of people had left, it got pretty loud when Melky’s shot went over the fence. I bet part of the joy was everyone being happy it was over. I know I was.

Love the heart and toughness the team is showing right now. The fight. This is the feel those late 90s championship teams had. They might not win pretty all the time. Not the strongest hitting teams. But they have that feel of a winner. Its what has been missing since that 2004 Red Sox series.

I’m not an overly optimistic guy at all, but I never thought we’d lose that game today. To me, it just had that feel. I’m trying to temper my excitement, but this team is headed for big things. Wait til A Rod gets back.

  107. GreenBeret7 April 22nd, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Another 7 innings, another win wasted by Phil Hughes in Scranton. That makes him 3-0 with an era under 2. WHAT A WASTE. Joba should be in the bullpen and Hughes should be our # 5 starter.. or at least bring him up until Wang fixes himself.. geez… best spring training starter, best Scranton starter.. and he’s rotting away in the minor leagues.

P.S… marry me Phil Hughes, you are so hot!

    miggs,

I agree. Cashman has sounded very guarded, re: Wang. He hasn’t been towing the company line like Girardi and Eliand have. Cash sounded genuinely concerned and kept referencing the low velocity.

Hughes’ good outing today should only further their decision to DL Wang. He is pitching his simulated game tomorrow, if he doesn’t do well, he probably will be.

  126. SJ44 April 22nd, 2009 at 9:09 pm

I had no problem with Girardi stating with CC. CC wanted a chance to get out of the inning and he still had gas in the tank. Gotta show confidence in the Big Fella.

Jose Veras pitched himself back into the picture today. That was an important outing for him.

Guys are hearing Melancon’s footsteps. The non-Bruney righties have to step up or someone is going to lose their job.

The biggest issue besides Wang difficulties are the lack of hitting with RISP. They have to improve in that area.

It’s a teamwide problem and I’d like to see guys take fewer big cuts and stop trying to do too much in those situations.

Jeff – The pitching staff is going to get a real test.

At this point, the only ‘weak’ team on the schedule upcoming are the Angels, who own us. And half of those are on the road.

  130. Bob Mac April 22nd, 2009 at 9:10 pm

  142. Joe from Long Island April 22nd, 2009 at 9:20 pm

SJ44 – thanks for the post.

I wonder if some of the big swings were guys trying to end it in the extra innings. Singleton was commenting on that phenomenon on the YES broadcast. I think we’ve seen it in the past, and not just on the Yanks.

Absolutely, Veras came through bigtime today. When he’s right, he’s unhittable. Problem is, too often he is wild as wild can be, and then he leaves one over the plate….How many times have we seen that?

As has been commented on here before, there are so many good arms in the system, they all can’t play in NY. A deal needs to be made, or players through the system will be blocked, and some will be lost to Rule V. The question is who will be gone? Does an outing like this by Veras make it more likely that a David Robertson or Steven Jackson gets dealt, or that he – Veras – will be traded now that his trade value has gone up?

I wonder what Eiland, Contreras, Joe, Cash are thinking in this regard. We’ll never know, of course; we’ll only know the end result.

  143. GreenBeret7 April 22nd, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    Melancon now pitching.

Double to first batter, scoring a run on Hughes’ line.
Melcancon strikes out the next batter. 5-1 Scranton in the bottom of the 8th.

have you watched Penny pitch? I haven’t been impressed. He’s had plenty of hard hit balls off of him.

Maybe he’ll get better as the season goes along but too many people are looking at the #s alone (which aren’t great anyway) and assuming he’s pitching well.

With the stuff he’s throwing right now, he’s going to get hit. It’s only a matter of time.

  170. SJ44 April 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Runs per game is a misleading stat.

You can score 10 runs one game, 0 the next, average 5 runs a game and be 1-1.

There such a thing as clutch hitting.

Statheads disagree but, you know it when you see it.

For the last 2+ years, this team has been awful in late and clutch offensive situations.

It’s an area that has to improve.

If it doesn’t, then the pitching will have to be great in order for them to reach their goals.

“It’s loyalty to the point that it becomes a fault.”

Since the definition of loyalty is “unswerving allegiance” (the dictionary definition that is, not perhaps yours or Nick’s) it’s pretty hard for it to BECOME a fault! That’s pretty much a contradiction in terms, friend, as is the term “blind loyalty”.

If you don’t care for unswerving allegiance, then you may not care for loyalty! However, you can’t get much stronger than “unswerving” so you’re at the end point already.

    :D

Beyond that, all I have to say about the subject is

    YAWN!

This all started with a pretty benign interchange between Pat M and me and really should have stayed there. My bad was responding to Nick’s post since he really took the topic to a place it wasn’t ever intended to be, as he is sometimes wont to do, IMO.

So that’s that as far as I’m concerned. If you guys want to belabor it with each other, have at!

I’m much more concerned with my disdain for Jacoby Ellsbury, since I don’t feel I owe him or his team any unswerving allegiance.

  176. Boston Dave April 22nd, 2009 at 9:42 pm

“I see he only has 2 k’s in 5 innings. How hard is he throwing?”

    ——

he’s been consistently low-90′s with his fastball so far this season but it just looks very hittable. He has decent control in spurts but he appears to be throwing too many “mistake” fastballs. His curve looks ok but he doesn’t look like he’s commanding that consistently either.

I didn’t even see his last start where he got killed. I saw the first game he won and so far tonight and still haven’t been impressed.

He may very end up being a decent 5th starter but I personally think they have better options (Buchholz, Bowden, Masterson) so as long as Penny is pitching, I’m happy with it.

  179. Joe from Long Island April 22nd, 2009 at 9:43 pm

I’ve got MLB Network on now, and they’re showing KC-at Cleveland, top of the 9th. The stands are nearly deserted, including behind home plate. Looking at how the few fans are bundled, and the players with their ear flap-caps on, it looks frigid. No wonder attendance is down.

Well, this afternoon it was a cold, steady rain in NY. Despite that, the grandstand looked like it had a pretty good crowd, and even the hated premium seats had more people than what I’m seeing in Cleveland right now.

Personally, I think that ticket brokers and speculators are going to StubHub and flooding the secondary market, trying to make a killing. And those grossly overpriced tix aren’t selling, hence empty seats.

But, you have to be objective about it. Very few people are keen on going to a game in miserable conditions – especially at $2600+ for the privilege.

    SJ,

I understand that. The thing is these Yankees are not the feast or famine variety of the past few years.

The fewest runs they’ve scored was 2 and that was only once this season.

In every other game they’ve scored at least 4 runs. They’ve scored 11 once and 7 twice.

Every other game has been between 4 and 6 runs, which shows they’ve been consistent and that’s without their best hitter.

Yankees are top four in OPS. Without A-Rod. I think the offense will be more than okay once A-Rod comes back.

In fact the pitching has been FAR worse than the hitting thus far. Far worse.

CC has been mediocre, Wang has been blegh, Joba’s been mediocre and the pitching was supposed to be the strength of the team. So far only 2 starters have pitched well.

You can feel free to be blindly loyal to my Fantasy Team (I know, I know, there’s no such thing as blind loyalty) as much as you want to since it has been in the lower third of the league from jump street!

I’ve said on a number of occasions that this is the first time I ever played fantasy baseball and truly knew nothing about it whatsoever – that fact was abundantly clear in my drafting.

And thus is the schizophrenia known as Fantasy Baseball. You don’t really care who ends up winning (except when the Sox are involved – you never want them to win ever) but want both teams involved to hit up a storm, unless one of your fantasy pitchers is pitching for one of the teams, at which point you want that pitcher to win and get a ton of Ks, but you want your players who are on the opposing team to get hits in the process.

    What a prostitute!

And don’t shed a tear for the Yankees, they have over 3.5M committed ticket sales two weeks into the season. Pesonally, I don’t think there will be a problem between Youkilis and Joba. It’s a different environment. Clemens has been replaced by CC. Even AJ doesn’t go headhunting; throw inside, yes (that pitch was no where near Longoria’s head, by the way), but not headhunting. Joba needs to focus on being a starting pitcher.

Uncle, that’s what I mean, what Trevor said.

I made a joke about it last season saying that maybe Youklis is just so ugly that Joba is transfixed and can’t help but throw at his head. But it is a very strange phenomenon that Joba pitches him so high and tight, to be polite about it. It got to a point where it was almost scary to watch. I think Joba was tossed from a game once for it.

Of course I have no way of knowing what is going to happen this time around, but it is fact that Puke is the only one that this repeat thing with Joba happened with!

  223. Todd April 22nd, 2009 at 10:32 pm

  224. ray (sox fan) April 22nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Even as a Sox fan I respect Joba. He seems like a good kid who is personable and has tons of talent.

With that being said, if he throws at Youkilis in this series there will be no excuses about it being accidental. It would just invite a big mess because you know that the Sox would retaliate and throw at one of the Yankee key players.

It is one thing to move people off the plate but neither the Yankee pitchers or the Sox pitchers need to be intentionally throwing at the other team’s players in my opinion.

I’m definitely with you and I am still stymied by the whole thing, to tell you the truth. It’s almost like an out-of-body experience to watch it. It would be one thing if they had a history with each other or even knew each other or played against each other, but none of that is the case!

  228. murphydog April 22nd, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Since the Yankees will surely win the World Series this October, before the Giants and Knicks even have a chance to win their titles, the true question was: does anything think the Rangers have a chance to win the Stanley Cup *this year*?

I just realized that between last night’s game and today’s 14 inning game I spent 13 out of 24 hours in Yankee Stadium. Also, all the food I’ve eaten since lunch yesterday was from the Stadium.

Reports of Godzilla’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Veras is the kind of pitcher that makes you bang your head against the wall. He can look SO bad at times. Then he can have an outing like today where he throws 3+ innings and is basically unhittable with filthy stuff. If he was more consistent he’d be a great weapon. Right now, they should use him in low leverage situations.

This weekend Boston series should be a great one. Both teams are playing well and there are 3 good pitching matchups.

  238. Betsy April 22nd, 2009 at 10:52 pm

I agree that the Yankees’ problems with RISP are going to come back and bite them at some point, but on the other hand, I think these numbers are flukishly bad – they’ll improve, even if they’re not great. That said, this team is winning close games……and late. I know that didn’t happen last year.

I’m not too confident in Joba at Fenway, but we’ll see. Burnett and Beckett should be fascinating – we know AJ will not take it lying down if his former teammate decides to use the Yankees as target practice. I know AJ has pitched great there in the past – it’s different coming in as a Yankee, though. Still, he seems to enjoy shutting opposing fans up……and nothing would be sweeter than to quiet the Fenway faithful. Even Pettitte/Masterson is a good matchup…hopefully the weather will be ok.

It’s a toss up to which team will win 2-3. I don’t see us or the Suxs sweeping. But I think if we win game one we have a great chance of taking 2 out of 3. The one thing that I’m really happy about is how our line up is full of switch hitters so I don’t think Lester being a lefty will impact the game as much as it would have if this was last year.

GB — Thanks for the updates tonight. Melky Mesa is playing for the first time in the States this year right? What’s his profile look like; Potential all-star/ solid everyday player/ 4th outfielder? Austin Jackson is having an encouraging start, the idea of having a young athletic hitter in center field is exciting.

I think it’s really funny how many people are calling for Hughes to get the nod for Wang’s start in Detroit. Last year this time I’d wager some of you same folks were calling for his head or to trade him for a sack of potatoes. He is a good one, and he’ll be a solid pitcher for this team when he’s ready. But this game is what he can be, not what he is yet. Give him more time IMO. He was given too much too soon two years in a row, why do it again? It would make me sick to have him called up, give up 4 runs, get boo’d and called a bust…. AGAIN.

Bring up Aceves to make that start if we need somebody.

You’re welcome, Rob. Enjoy doing it. Mesa looks good. Good left fielder, despite his misplay on a catchable double tonight. Mesa has really good power and better than average speed, good base runner, very good arm. He’s really young and gets rather excited at times. Tonight, trying to hit the 3rd homer of his night, was chasing balls in the dirt. He still strikes out a bit too much, as does Jackson. Jackson has every indication of being the real deal..a Devon White type player, possibly. Mesa

With all this incessant discussion about the empty seats, I thought I’d just throw some alternative ideas out there:

Even in the old stadium, most of the expensive seats were bought up by banks and companies in the financial sector of NY. This is not a concept exclusive to the new stadium. With what’s happening on Wall Street this year is it really any surprise that those particular sales are down? This is to be expected, and the same problem would have existed at the old stadium.

With all the lounges and restaurants in the new stadium, isn’t it possible that some people just aren’t in their seats?

What’s with all the class warfare on this blog? What makes you people think wealthy fans are any different from you? Why the constant insinuations that they aren’t real fans? Does it make you feel better? I just don’t see what money has to do with the degree to which someone is a fan. I know some very wealthy people that are hard core, dedicated fans. It reminds me of the myth that wealth is somehow tied to luck. In real life, not Hollywood, most wealthy individuals achieve their success through years of hard work and dedication, while the “less fortunate” sit on their arses and complain.

Sorry if this sounds confrontational. Just my 2 cents.

  261. boobie April 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm

The Rangers absolutely can win the stanley cup this year. They have arguably the best and hottest goalie right now, and they are getting timely scoring. Is it likely? Probably not. They don’t have the firepower up front or the one or two studs on D that most stanley cup teams have. Lundquist has been great but it’s difficult to save 35+ shots for the entire playoffs.

Devon White was a terrific player – if AJax has a career like that or even close, then we’re in for a real treat. It’s all about progress with AJax this year…….I’m sure he will cool off at some point and probably strike out alot in doing so. The key will be how he reacts to the slump and how he reacts to pitchers’ adjustments to him. Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports – by far. Therefore, as far as I’m concerned, AJax needs to spend at least all of this year in AAA – if for no other reason then to simply learn. Let him learn in a no pressure environment – he will let us know when he’s ready.

You’re right. For the last two years, after his seasons were over, he moved up a classification to play in the playoffs and did well. I mentioned Devon White, because that’s the talents that Jackson has, decent to good power (line drive/gap) outstanding base runner with very good speed and a really top center fielder. Good, accurate arm, not a rocket arm. What he really has is the ability to go above the fences to take away homers. Love that basketball skill in baseball.

all of the kids that have come through Charleston are great kids. Torre Tyson demands it. They spend time talking to the kids before and after games, sign autographs. He’s done a great job with them. It would be a lot of help, though if he had a good infield/outfield coach. On another note – Cervelli 2 for 3 tonite with a BB. Heading north to the Mendoza line.

Vech with another error, Angel with number 8 for the year.

Betsy, I’ve been following Philip Hughes since his days in PONY League and I believe his future is going to be All-Star quality…That being said, his next return to the Stadium has to be for the long term..So it’s my hope as well that he stays at AAA until all his pitches are ready to get mlb hitters out at anytime…With the pressure that comes with being him and pitching for the Yanks there cannot be any margin for error….I was wrong about him being ready the first time back in 07 ( even with the no-no )…The longer he stays at Scranton the better…He’s only 22…..

They’ve got to get a good infield coach in the lower minors, especially in Charleston. If they don’t, Angelini will never make it as a shortstop. Everything is fouled up, and, I believe that it’s affecting his offense. He goes back on the ball well, but, everything else is a disaster.

m vs. Pat M on Phil Hughes!

  286. Giuseppe Franco April 23rd, 2009 at 12:30 am

Hughes’ problems staying healthy blew up two years of his career.

He missed three months in 2007 and three more months in 2008.

Imagine how much better he’d be by now if he was just on the mound pitching those six months he missed.

That’s been his biggest downfall more than anything.

  287. m April 23rd, 2009 at 12:33 am

    No, not at all.

I just think he’s ready for the call. He was actually ready last September. Last winter. This spring.

His curveball disappears, people declare he needs the year in the minors to master it. One week later, he’s got it back and it’s sharp.

If we don’t need him, great. But if I’ll break something if IPK gets called up before Hughes. At least Hughes isn’t afraid of throwing strikes at the major league level.

The kid’s been to hell and back, physically and mentally. But Hughes has “it”.

Actually, neither Phil nor Ian have anything more to prove in AAA. They quote “make them look silly”. Phil just needs to prove he can stay healthy and trust his defense while pitching in the bigs. Ian needs to prove that he can avoid nibbling in the majors. Isn’t that the book on Ian? That he has to paint the black to be effective?

The pity is that Tyson takes the hit. He works a lot of hours with Angelini, but, it really takes away from the other players’ special instrucyions. Defense in 2008 is what cost Charleston the league title. 43 erros from Angelini at short and 25 from Snyder at 2nd base, not counting 20 plus at third base just killed them.

  293. Nick in SF April 23rd, 2009 at 12:46 am

I am also of the mind that Phil Hughes will be a great Yankee pitcher for years to come. I think the question here is not who can help the Yankees win one game in late April, if someone has to start for Wang, but whether coming up for one or two starts and then going back down is best for Hughes’ long-term development. Isn’t that the calculation they’ll make if they decide to give that start to someone besides Wang?

And I disagree that Hughes has nothing to prove in AAA. He doesn’t have to prove that he can get AAA hitters out, but he has to prove that he can do it over and over and over, be consistent, and stay healthy. He’s off to a great start this year.

I’m not 100% on this, but so far Pat M is winning this bout on points and could be heading towards a TKO, but m. is a game fighter as mama bears often are when the cub appears under threat.

Hughes should be the guy called up next week to pitch in Wang’s place. There is no logical reason to use anyone else.

But I disagree that there is nothing for him to prove n Triple-A. He needs to keep taking the ball every five days and continuing to work on his secondary pitches.

I’m also a big believer in Hughes. I think he’s going to be very good for a long time.

But signing Pettitte and making Hughes the sixth starter was the right thing to do because of his struggles the last year and his lack of durability.

  306. m April 23rd, 2009 at 1:16 am

Hughes would be sent back down if and when Wang is “back”. Unless Hughes has option issues that I’m unaware of.

I’m not an expert, I don’t know the best way to develop pitchers.

But I get the sense that Phil is ready to contribute when called upon. He was ready until injuries derailed him.

I hope it’s a very long time before I see Kennedy. I know that’s mean and counterintuitive, but I’ve got little patience for him.

I don’t know much about developing pitchers either, but this is one subject that randy l. has been convincing on.

Does Kei Igawa have anything left to prove at AAA either, other than whether there’s a way for him to disappear forever down there?

  310. Pat M April 23rd, 2009 at 1:25 am

    m. Is on the right path in that if they need someone to make a few spot starts for Wang, it could lead to a long relief role ( think Mendoza from the glory days )…The club has a need for that type of dual role pitcher…I’m not at all certain if that would be best for both Ian & Phil…Hughes I have to think will be slotted in when Pettite departs after this season….Aceves very well may get the call, as he’s ideal for that role….

Nick, the only way for Igawa to disappear is to have someone willing to take the bite.

  312. m April 23rd, 2009 at 1:26 am

Well, in light of what happened last April when he was part of the rotation, maybe a few spot starts is the best way to reintroduce Phil to the majors. Low expectations and less pressure.

Anyone who thinks that Phil’s psyche is fragile doesn’t really know much about the kid, IMO.

Kei Igawa needs to learn to keep his pitches down. If he can do that, he’ll end up being a decent pitcher.

  313. m April 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 am

Don’t be so quick to shoo away Andy. If he has a Moose, circa 2008 type of year and IF we go to the playoffs and IF Andy does his playoff thing then we might see an encore.

I’m going to say something that’s going to piss off a lot of people, but I can think of 3 Yankee SP that I’d trust before I trust CC in a postseason start.

  314. GreenBeret7 April 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 am

People talk about Hughes being injury prone (and so far, he seems to be), but, another great talent that’s fast falling into that category is BJ Upton. He’s been hurt in each of the last three years.

  315. Ed - Swisher is awesome!! April 23rd, 2009 at 1:33 am

    mel,

ditto on CC’s postseason start. rather have Andy, Aj, Joba or Wang go before him.

  316. m April 23rd, 2009 at 1:34 am

    Ed,

CC and Wang tied for last. :(

  317. Nick in SF April 23rd, 2009 at 1:34 am

Pat M., I think you’re holding back, you had the chance to move in for the kill and you didn’t take it. The long relief role doesn’t jibe well with getting the max innings out of Phil, which is also a reason the learned cite for keeping him in AAA for as long as possible.

Who said anything about a fragile psyche?

but it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for…

    GB, how about Joe Mauer?

  319. m April 23rd, 2009 at 1:38 am

    Nick,

I think he meant the long relief/spot starter role is ideal for Aceves. He’s not budging an inch on Hughes.

Daniel Cabrera’s eyes must be bad. From Stark’s useless info. Cabrera was 0-for-18 with 18 strikeouts before grounding out in his last at-bat. Stark put out the challenge to see if that made some kind of record.

    mel,

Wang was actually decent in 2005 and 2006. I guess in 2007, the hype finally caught up to him.

What about Mauer? He’s the best all around catcher in baseball as soon as he’s healthy enough to play.

  322. Giuseppe Franco April 23rd, 2009 at 1:41 am

It only takes a couple of good performances in postseason games to shake off a reputation for struggling in big games.

It worked for Clemens in 2000. He never was a great postseason pitcher but did pitch a few big games for them when it really counted.

Sabathia is certainly capable of doing that. So is Wang for that matter.

GB, you make it sound mundane, typical Green understatement. I liked my scenario better, er bitter.

GB, it seems every year, his legs been bothering him.

  325. Pat M April 23rd, 2009 at 1:47 am

I think much will be decided tomorrow when The Wang-Man throws his simulated game….I think they’ll DL him, then the real decision has to be made….I’d perfer to keep Phil in AAA ballb however if things are not so good on the Wang front, he may indeed get the call….Nick in SF, you quote both Billy JOEL & Bruce Springsteen in less than 24 hours…Didn’t someone inquire about being a deadhead last night ????

I do too, Bo. I just don’t want anybody coming to Savannah trying to steal my stash of…..errr…..food, so I try keeping it low key.

Not that much different than most catchers, really. Remeber that he’s catching on artifical turf in about 100 games a year.

  328. raymagnetic April 23rd, 2009 at 1:52 am

I also think Phil should be called up if they decide to put Wang on the DL.

I don’t feel a player can really refine themselves until they hit the show. As CashMoney once said triple A isn’t what it used to be.

Point in case, Kei Igawa. In my opinion the only way Hughes will get a real challenge is by facing major league hitters. JMO

  329. m April 23rd, 2009 at 1:57 am

    Guiseppe Franco,

I’m beginning to think that CC is an emotional pitcher. I hope I’m wrong, but it seems as if he can’t block out the magnitude of some games, or special meaning attached to others. Don’t want to list the particular games, but the track record hasn’t been so great.

I know what he did for Milwaukee, pitching them into the playoffs. He’s a great competitor.

In fact I probably am wrong, but I’d like the trend to stop. Kind of glad that CC’s missing Boston this go-around.

  330. Pat M April 23rd, 2009 at 2:00 am

Randy Johnson as well as Clemens were tagged with the post game blues….Bad rap..CC will excell come October…

  331. GreenBeret7 April 23rd, 2009 at 2:12 am

One thing that nobody on tv or here mentioned was that Cabrera hit homers from both sides of the plate.

  332. m April 23rd, 2009 at 2:16 am

    GB7,

Check the last thread. Melky was the 113th or so to do it in AL.

They listed the other Yankee switch hitters who did it. Posada did it like 9 times. Texeira was also on the list. Someone did a good job finding that info.

Didn’t see that, Mel. Thanks. still, it came at an opportune time, being back to back with Matsui. In aboy 420 at bats, it’s only his 5 RH homer. He’s a .252 RH hitter.
