“Kudo’s to Cashman for not signing Wang to a long term deal!!!!!!”

    tantrum willoughby-

… but you think it’s fine your buddy rush limbaugh makes what he makes. of course, that oxycontin does get expensive :)

i have to put out the disclaimer that i have a hard time taking anyone serious who likes limbaugh. i look at it as a kind of a reverse IQ test.

wang will wang again. it might not be here, but i’m sure tampa bay would grab him in a heartbeat and in a about a week neil allen would have him back to what he was. then wang will get the 50 million he deserves.

  2. Trevor April 23rd, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Get ready for lots of dugout warnings, bench clearing maybe even some punches being thrown.
With Joba pitching and Youkilis playing and we all know Beckett likes to throw at Yankees, I don’t think it’s going to be a quiet series.

  3. Patrick April 23rd, 2009 at 1:16 pm

At minimum the Yanks should win 1 of 3.

I’d be pumped if they take 2 of 3 and floored if they sweep.

  4. Beudlde April 23rd, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Beckett Vs. Burnett – Thats the one i’am looking forward to most.

Beckett v. Burnett – wow. How I hope AJ disects the Sox like he always does. Of course, now he’s pitching for the Yankees in the middle of a white hot rivalry – it’s not the same as pitching for Toronto. I have great faith in him, though, so I’m sure he’ll do his part.

Unfortunately, I’ll bet anything that Josh will throw up and in, he’ll get a warning and AJ will be ejected if he responds in kind. Ortiz has already put the umps on notice by his cowardly comments……..I’

  7. ANSKY April 23rd, 2009 at 1:19 pm

With Joba’s innings limit (tomorrow) and the length of yesterdays game, AJ and Andy have to go deep into their games. Bullpen innings.

Yeah i can’t wait, and I can see some tough inside pitching.

  9. Patrick April 23rd, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Betsy, What did Ortizzle say about the umps?

WOW Jesus Montero is a great hitter. I think he’ll spend most of this year in A and maybe get a late season call-up to AA. Spend most of 2010 in AA get a late season call-up to AAA. Then in 2011 at some point he should be ready for the bigs!

I will be there Sunday night….will anyone else?

  11. bryan April 23rd, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Lester’s been pitching better than his ERA, his peripherals are solid. Tough series for the Yanks in Boston.

Yeah I’m going up and going to the Saturday and Sunday game, I’ll be wearing my A.J jersey Saturday :)

  13. tampayank April 23rd, 2009 at 1:24 pm

patrick, ortiz said Joba needs to earn players respect, refering to throwing at Youk, Ortiz needs to focus on staying above the Mendoza line instead of yapping, maybe he still wants to feel relevent w/o having the Manny protection in the lineup

  15. Laura - Plug it in, change the world! April 23rd, 2009 at 1:25 pm

If Joba is going to throw at Pukelis, he might as well just hit him. I’m tired of all of the pretending. Hit him in the rear and be done with it.

  16. Scooter10 April 23rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm

If the starters stay on schedule, Chamberlain and Burnett are lined up to pitch against Boston again in a 2-game home series on May 4-5. Five of the Yankees next twelve games against Boston. Should be exciting….

  17. jennifer April 23rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Why should Joba care about being respected by the red soxs. Who cares what they think.

  18. ANSKY April 23rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Maybe Ortiz should try catching up with Joba’s slider before he talks about Joba earning respect.

  19. Mark-Cant Touch This April 23rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Yeah but the one thing I love is our switch hitting line up, so Lester being a lefty wont be as big of an issue as it was like year.

  21. ANSKY April 23rd, 2009 at 1:29 pm

    Laura –

Maybe Joba’s already been trying to do that … and all the ‘problems’ with Joba buzzing Yook might stem from him confusing Yook’s face with his rear end.

  22. jennifer April 23rd, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Maybe Ortiz should respect the game and stop using the juice. Fess up, everyone knows you did it. Oh the drinks in the DR I didn’t know what was in them. Yeah BS, that is why your arms tripled in size.

  23. Trevor April 23rd, 2009 at 1:29 pm

I know Fenway doesn’t have a large seating capacity but it’s annoying that there are never any Yankee fans at Fenway. Although quite a few years ago there used to be a number of them but in recent years you don’t see any there.
But there is seemingly tons of Red Sox fans at Yankee Stadium. You would think every Yankee fan that can go to games would gobble up all the Yankee vs Red Sox tickets. Amazing how Red Sox fan get Yankee tickets but it doesn’t work the other way at Fenway.

  24. Ed - Swish is awesome! April 23rd, 2009 at 1:32 pm

    Jennifer,

don’t forget about him suddenly becoming “good” when he got to Boston.

  25. S.o.S. April 23rd, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Did anyone watch the mlb network yesterday when they were talking about Latroy “dont you dare wear 21″ Hawkins learning to throw the cutter last year? He looked pretty good closing out the game. My question is how the hell do you not learn how to throw the cutter till you get traded?

  26. jennifer April 23rd, 2009 at 1:34 pm

    ED- That too. :)

  27. ANSKY April 23rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm

    Trevor –

There’s a high level of energy at Fenway especially when the Yanks are in town. Sometimes the punk element comes out bolder than how it does at Yankee Stadium, and they feel entitled to cross reasonable behavioral lines.

Meanting: A few guys in Yanks hats among that drunken mob might be in for a fight whether they want one or not. Ask Gary Sheffield.

  28. Paulie April 23rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm

What a great “sports” weekend. Yanks at Sawz. NHL and NBA playoffs and the overly-hyped NFL Draft.

  29. Andrew April 23rd, 2009 at 1:36 pm

    Trevor,

The answer to your question is that fewer New Yorkers end up living in Boston, since why downgrade from NYC to a podunk college cow-town? However, all those New Englanders manage to migrate to NY for school, business, whatever, and they end up staying and buying up tickets to see their beloved Sawks at the Stadium. That, and the Yankees have consistently been able to fit more than the 15 or so fans that get jammed in to the Fens, so there are more opportunities to get tickets.

  30. Yankee Trader April 23rd, 2009 at 1:38 pm

    Great pitching matchups!!

    Comments on Empty $2500 Seats:

1.$2500 seats are probably mostly owned by corporations receiving government bailout money.

    2. Seats not filled because the CEO’s don’t want to be recognized on TV, much like you wouldn’t want to be caught on the night’s headlines at a strip club.

    3. Most of the seats are empty, because they are in the restaurants chatting and drinking about what to do with their bonuses.

    Thoughts!!!

  31. gayle April 23rd, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Not that anyone cares but I am watching the Phillies/Brewers game and the park there is empty as well and these are World Champions.Interestingly enough there behind the plate seats AK The Diamond Club look filled yet the upper decks and many of the main sections look empty.

I would venture that attendance is down many many places this year unfortunately for the Yanks they just chose to open a new park this year.

meanwhile back to baseball Cole Hamels is dealing 6 strikeouts through 3 he looks very very good broken bats all over the place

    1. Joba and Youkilis have words at some point, maybe over high and tight.

    2. A.J. beats Beckett.

    3. Swisher has a big series.

    4. Yankees take 2 of 3.

  44. Pat M April 23rd, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup ) I think if Wang’s Sim game today doesn’t go well, he’ll land on the dl….If that indeed is the case, how comes up…Last night there was much debate about Hughes or Kennedy….I think it needs to be someone who can spot start and serve the long relief role…Aceves could be perfect for that dual role position…..When Hughes does come up , I think it has to be with the intent that he’s here for good….

  45. Wow April 23rd, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Beckett vs. Lester–close, but right now I would say edge goes to Boston

Burnett vs. Beckett–edge Yankees. Burnett’s career era at Fenway is 0.40

Pettitte vs. Masterson–toss up. should be a damn good game, and I’ll be there

    “rconn23 April 23rd, 2009 at 11:52 am

Saying Melky Cabrera should be the starting CF because of 23 at-bats in April is absurd.

It’s a pretty safe bet Cabrera won’t be slugging .826 by the end of the season. Call it a hunch.

He’s played 428 games in the majors. The chances of him suddenly morphing into Bernie Williams are just not likely.

This whole Gardner vs. Melky debate is tedious. Both, up until this point, have proven to be marginal major leaguers. The only difference is that Gardner’s performance is from a much smaller sample size – 57 games.

While I agree with Pete that Gardner has a bit of a higher ceiling than Melky, the competition between the two of them can only help the team.

It’s illogical to root against either one of them.”

    hmmm…
    Bernie Williams career stats:
    http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/histo.....rID=124288

    Melky Cabrera:
    mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_stats_player.jsp?c_id=mlb&playerID=466320

And what about Bernie Williams first few years tells you that Melky can’t possibly morph into him?

Cause it seems to me like there’s a good chance Melky could be that type of player if he continues to develop.

You never know what can happen with a player – especially someone that young who has the talents that Melky has. Give him a chance to prove that he can be Bernie Williams.

    Brett Gardner certainly can’t.

  47. Bob(The Original) April 23rd, 2009 at 1:59 pm

When was the last time we went into a Boston series actually feeling good about how our pitching was set up?

Seems like it’s been a while to me.

  48. murphydog April 23rd, 2009 at 1:59 pm

I imagine Burnett giving Joba a speech and that it goes something like this (with apologies to The Untouchables, 1987)

Burnett: You said you wanted to get Youkilis. Do you really wanna get him? You see what I’m saying is, what are you prepared to do?
    Chamberlain: Anything within the law.
Burnett: And then what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way. Because they’re not gonna give up the fight, until one of you is dead.
Chamberlain: I want to get Youkilis! I don’t know how to do it.
Burnett: You wanna know how to get Youkilis? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the NY way! And that’s how you get Youkilis. Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? I’m offering you a deal. Do you want this deal?

  49. Jeff D April 23rd, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Ortiz laid the groundwork for our pitchers to be ejected if they hit someone, even if it is accidental.

AJ cannot be caught up in playing the bean ball war. He should let his pitching do the talking. If it’s a blowout game, then fine, but don’t mess around in a close game. Sometimes, there are no warnings before ejections.

Beckett vs. Lester—close, but right now I would say edge goes to Boston

    ———————-

I think the edge goes to the Yanks. Its like hitting 2 birds with one stone. Let them go at it. I say have them pitch against their own team(hitting a few batters, while the yanks watch)and once they are over the 100 count. The Yanks take the field. Cant get better than that.

  57. murphydog April 23rd, 2009 at 2:08 pm

I don’t think the Yankees really have anybody looking to hurt the other side. They want to beat the Sox into the ground fair and square. That said, I don’t think Girardi or Francona will allow their teams to be intimidated.

  58. Boston Dave April 23rd, 2009 at 2:12 pm

“Cole Hamels left Thursday’s game in the fourth inning after being struck by a Prince Fielder line drive.

Fielder’s liner appeared to hit him near the left (pitching) shoulder, and there’s no word as of yet on the severity of the injury. “

Youk gives new meaning to the term “chin music”

With Youk it’s a chin concerto. Anybody remember Mac Tonight?

Great matchups. Round 1 in what is certain to be a season-long fight to the finish.

Does Melky get the start in CF against Lester? Probably. Molina catching with Posada DHing Fri and catching Sat? or stay with Molina-Burnett?

The Yanks took the season’s series in 2008 vs. Boston with less pitching than they have now.

  61. S.o.S. April 23rd, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Some of sound like tomorrow the Yanks and Sox are going into an octogan and going at it. First to tap out loses. I dont see the hate between players as it was in 04. Perfect example is the WBC made Hobbitt have a man crush on el capitan. I caught myself rooting for a Youk hit. How bad is that? Anyways the team that will be tapping out by the end of Sundays game wont answer say much. The last couple years we’ve been swept by Boston in the opening series and still ended up beating them in the head to head matches at seasons end. This is not to say i wont be enjoying the game.

Here’s my guy’s *Minor’s Report*, for anyone who is interested:

“Young D.J. Mitchell continues to shine in Low A Charleston with a 2-0 record and an ERA of 1.00 as does Pat Venditte with his fourth save and an ERA of zilch.

Scranton finally lost a game to Buffalo when David Robertson blew a save of a nicely pitched start by Ian Kennedy. Ian left the game after 6 innings with a 3-2 lead but Robertson gave up 4 runs. Scranton bounced right back though with a 6-1 win against Buffalo the very next day on a gem of a start by Phil Hughes. Hughes went a strong 7 2/3 innings giving up just 1 ER while walking 1 and striking out 7. LOOK-OUT Mr. Wang!”

  64. Boston Dave April 23rd, 2009 at 2:20 pm

“The Yanks took the season’s series in 2008 vs. Boston with less pitching than they have now.”

no small feat. The Yankees, IMO, have improved far more than the Sox in 09.

Of course, not having ARod hurts in this particular series but the Yanks are ready, willing, and able to take the 2009 series from the Sox.

Are you sure there aren’t that many Yankees fans in Fenway? I’ve heard that if Yankees fans go there, they do not wear Yankee gear in order to “stay safe.” Or are you just saying that there aren’t as many Yankees fans in Fenway as there are Sox fans at YS? In which case, “nevermind.”

    ———————————

What is this “The Fens” stuff? First off, it’s a pretty lame nickname. Second why on earth would a Yankee fan refer to it as anything other than the “Rat Infested Cesspool”?

  72. trisha - I am panic proof. April 23rd, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Doreen, I just read your last post but don’t know what preceded it, but I can tell you that the last time I went to Fenway, there were many Yankee fans there. I went in full Yankee garb. Now granted it was before the Red Sox won their aberrant world series’, so that might make a difference. But other than in a good-natured way, nobody bothered me.

  73. Bob(The Original) April 23rd, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Chris (NYC): Keith, as the chief proponent of sample size, can you please put an end to the hysteria over Yankee Stadium HR rates after SIX GAMES?!?

Keith Law: (1:43 PM ET ) It was amazing. First we had ridiculous articles on Emilio Bonifacio’s game-changing mojo after three games. Then after ten games we hear how the Marlins are the team to beat. (They’re 6-0 vs Washington and 5-4 vs everyone else. Settle down.) The Yankee Stadium as Coors Field thing came up after three games. Are we all just getting dumber? It’s April. Talk to me about park effects in October.

Fenway Park is so little and ugly (IMHO). Now after going to the new Stadium, it will seems so much smaller and uglier than it already is! The seats are uncomfortable and you are pretty much on top of your neighbor.

    Joba beats Beckett 1-0

    Pettitte beats Wakefield 10-3

    Lester beats Ponson 9-2

    Take out Ponson. Insert AJ.

Bob(The Original ) Guilty as charged…I hate typing in Fenway Park, but in sits in the area known as the Fens…However it still stinks of stale beer and urine from 1986…Everytime I’ve been there, that’s the first ting I notice…

  80. m April 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm

No class discrimination at Fenway. Because they have no class! :)

I hate the tension associated with playing Boston, especially at Fenway. But we’ve had success there, unlike Baltimore and Minnesota.

Preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best!

  81. Yanksgal07 April 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm

I have tried for six years to get tickets to Fenway for a Yankee game through the Boston site when the tickets go on sale that day. I have waited for long periods of time to only be told no tickets were available. I heard they do a pre-sale for Boston fans just for Yankee games and basically there are no tickets available when it comes time for the general public sale which makes it hard for any Yankee fans to get tickets except to pay unreasonable amounts through the ticket sites. I guess when they see the “MyYanks” email that doesn’t help either ..haha. I’ve toured Fenway but never was able to get tickets to a Yankee/Sox game.

I finally have tickets to the August 21st game. A Boston client was able to secure 4 box seat tickets down the right field line and best of all …they are free !!!

I told my boss if he doesn’t see me in work on Monday it means I didn’t get out alive because I’ll be wearing my Yankee gear when I go. Here’s hoping they don’t pick on “older” ladies …lol.

Here’s to Joba, AJ & Pettitte …win big for us this weekend.

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!

  82. Doreen April 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm

    Trisha -

I’ve never been there myself. I’ve heard enough to think that if you don’t want to get hassled (and I over-stated by saying “stay safe”), you don’t wear Yankees gear and you remain relatively quiet. I’m glad to hear you didn’t have that experience. :)

One of the things I’d love to do before, well, let’s just say on my “bucket list,” is to visit as many ballparks as we can. So, I’d love to visit Fenway as a venue. Therefore, I’d prefer it was NOT a Yankees/Sox game. I couldn’t enjoy it!!!! Too many nerves.

  83. Boston Dave April 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm

    Keith Law is great.

Although he still has a tendancy to overrate Red Sox prospects, IMO, he is one of the only ESPN analysts who speaks his mind and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.

Did you guys see the Swisher youtube somebody poated about a week ago. Apparently Swish does not feel the love for Mr. Beckett.

It must be a home video from a fan who was invited to BP while Swish was in Oakland. I’ve heard Swish extends this opportunity to sick children. Anyway the kid asks Swish about the Red Sox and Swish, with nary a prompt, just blurts out ” Well I don’t like Beckett. Yeah I don’t like that guy at all” Later he professes an admiration for Ortiz, Manny and his man-crush on Big Jim Thome.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgZi-zaOshQ

Swish didn’t have the greatest homestand with the bat. I thought he was pressing a bit, especially against Pavano, trying to make that first big impression but he still contributed. Can’t get bat on ball- get base on balls!

  90. Christina April 23rd, 2009 at 2:48 pm

You bet Papi said that in purpose. He is tired of Joba throwing over Youk’s head at least 4 times and only getting punished once. He is also putting New York Watson in notice too because he has different rules for the Red Sox and the Yankees. For some reason Watson is tougher towards the Red Sox than any other team. He actually had the nerve to go to the Red Sox dugout during the game to question Francona about his shirt.

  107. trisha - click to see my Opening Day photos April 23rd, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Doreen, I have no idea what the atmosphere is like now. I have to say that when I went they still had their inferiority complex. So I was seriously able to get away with a lot! Not that they are a little more smug and have won something more recent than we have (we all know that the most recent is what people think about!) the atmosphere could be very different.

I’m happy to report that the inferiority complex still tends to be there, even if it’s not so strong, because when I come back with my “talk to me when you’ve won 26″ retort, it does at least settle them down a little.

    :)

I too love the idea of going to ballparks. Since I’ve already treated myself to that venue I really have no desire to go back there.

mel, I agree with you that any series with “them” is very stressful. You’d think that each game was the last game of the world series!

  108. randy l. April 23rd, 2009 at 3:06 pm

    nick n sf-

nope, no problem at all with what media personalities or players get, but an open market is an interesting concept though because even in baseball the rules can be stacked to make it look like a free market when it’s not. for instance baseball is a legalized monopoly with an anti trust exemption. teams cannot move around at will. players are restricted from moving for 6 years.the draft etc are restraints on an open free market.

  109. Bronx Jeers April 23rd, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Swish’s comments were from a couple of years back. It was just a youtube video. I don’t think it was headline news.

What was interesting is that when he was asked about the Sox, the first thing out of his mouth was his dilike for Beckett. Sort of an uncharcteristic response from the usually jovial Swisher.

I went to college in Boston. Once, while waiting in line to get yanks\sox tickets with friends( you can get great day of game tix if you’re willing to stand in line all day!), my friend and I left to go into the bathroom at the bar across the street. Someone pulled my friend over( red sox fan) and said tell your friend ( me in my pettitte t-shirt) to come over here. He said and i quote ” um excuse me hun, why are you wearing that shirt, I almost threw up my nachos” So i laughed and said ” well im from Brooklyn”. He replies ” listen, we all have our own problems, but seriously, take the shirt off!”. I could only help but laugh because it was noon and this guy was already wasted and he was semi-seious about the whole situation. That being said, people were harassing me all day but in a joking way cause i’m a girl. However, they were giving the guys in yankee shirts hell.

“None of that, man — just play the game the way it’s supposed to be, and that’s about it,” Ortiz said, referring to Chamberlain.

“This is a guy, as good as he is, the next step for him will be to earn respect from everybody in the league. He’s not a bad guy, but when things like that happen, people get the wrong idea.”

  118. Nick in SF April 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 pm

true, randy, but at least there are times in a player’s career when he gets to test the market as it is, as Livan got to this past off-season. Good to see that he isn’t letting Albert Pujols ruin his appetite.

this season you are going to see a lot of Melky AND a lot of Gardner so do yourselves and everyone else a favor and get used to it. This is not Melky OR Gardner, it’s Melky AND Gardner…the only way that changes is if we trade for some one or one of the 2 absolutely blows it.

  121. Pat M April 23rd, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Great stuff Randy…

Not a launching pad, my behind.

Ortiz’s quote doesn’t seem bad, but when people say stuff like this, they have to know that people will question it. Like with this, is he unconcerned that Beckett did the same thing last week?

I still use Roy Oswalt as the main example because he just felt the need to get his digs in on a-rod without the consideration he had multiple steroid users on his team during the good times.

It’s of no help during the Boston series, but, should be a big factor when going against the Tigers. Marcus Thames is out at least a month with a torn rib cage muscle. Not a high average against NYY, but, seems to do his damage at the worst times for NYY.

I think there is definitely a geographical component to it. I noticed when I was in the City that people who said they were Mets fans were not friendly to me at all, despite my attempts at being friendly (just because I really am by nature). I went into one of the sport stores around Times Square looking for Yankee stuff and couldn’t find anything. rconn23:

Melky has shown the ability to cover ground in center and has one of the better outfield arms in the AL.

He has shown the ability to hit around .280 and drive in over 70 runs in a season. While that may not be great for playing on the Yankees, he has shown that he has improved his approach at the plate, which has led to more home runs than usual.

It is possible that Melky can continue on this sort of tear through the season and bat .280 with 20hr and 80 rbi. Why not? Brett Gardner, on the other hand, has no chance at any of those numbers.

i have to put out the disclaimer that i have a hard time taking anyone serious who likes limbaugh. i look at it as a kind of a reverse IQ test.

I’ll say. Like all hate-mongerers and cowards, he appeals to the lowest common denominator in terms of IQ .

    Nick in SF,

I wonder if Yuri Sucart could get me on of those famous Big Papi milkshakes.

    You think?

wsr, I will be so excited and so grateful if you get to do that and will love to hear any other details of the trip. I don’t really like long flights since I’m pretty claustrophobic, so I will also appreciate hearing exactly how long you are in the air.

Have an awesome time and be careful.

    :)
