The five walks for Mark Teixeira today tied a team record for a nine-inning game. It was the seventh time it has happened, the first since Hersh Martin on Sept. 1, 1945 at Washington. Roger Maris walked five times in a 12-inning game in 1962.

Talked to Brian Bruney, who is relieved the injury isn’t more serious. He believes he could be ready once his 15 days on the DL are up.

people are acting like boston didnt even have to work hard to win these 2 games, in which we should have won, but the endings didnt work our way, thats baseball.

i guess im in the minority when i say i actually really like our team and think we can get pretty far.

  3. uh oh April 25th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

just out of curiosity why do ppl blame girardi and not cashman. cahsman has been here since 98 and the teams he won with were not even built by him

    I hate Fenway.

GB, from the prior thread – thanks for the correction. I meant location……and no way he was blaming Jorge. He put it all on himself……because as the pitcher, he’s in control.

It’s easy to be a good guy when you’re winning and doing well, not so easy when you struggle. The man faced the media and was brutally honest about just who’s shoulders the responsibility falls on. As CB said in the prior thread, he’s a good man and a good teammate – his teammates appreciate him, I believe that. I’m still impressed that he stayed in uniform even after he was out of the game. AJ cares a lot – he showed he was human today. He will be huge for us this season

far more important than today’s game is that Bruney is not seriously injured.

    great news indeed

  13. CaptainsCorner April 25th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

I hope someone tells CC and Tex that April is over in 5 days and it is time to get going.

  14. NongEyeJon April 25th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

At least AJ takes responsibility, though I would expect him to.

I thought it was also interesting, during the game, that McCarver repeated a quote by a Fenway fan about a foul ball being a homer at at Yankees Stadium this year. Why isn’t there an “uproar” about Fenway? If A-Rod played 81 games there the dude would hit 60+ every year. That place is a bandbox too.

I digress…these two games were tough to take. I hope they can bounce back, but what I thought was going to be a strength coming into the year (the bullpen) is completely worrisome. I’ve always supported Joba’s place in the rotation…but when the bullpen suffers like this, it makes it hard.

  15. pat April 25th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

This explains the last 8 years.

Some Yankee employees in Tampa didn’t get WS rings in 2000 and they put a curse on the team:

“Many of the people upset here also belong to the group that has cast a “Curse of the Rings” on the Yankees. Because the Yankees did not give World Series rings to many of their full-time employees after the 2000 title, these unhappy workers contend, on the condition of anonymity, that the Yankees won’t win another Fall Classic until this wrong is righted.”

  16. Boston Dave April 25th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

“This team will be fine. They just need to get A-Rod back and their starters to pitch the way they are supposed to pitch.”
    ————
That’s the key. The Yanks don’t need their starters to have career years or pitch better than normal.

If their guys just go out there and throw as they’re perfectly capable of, the wins will add up faster than this blog goes to hell after a loss.

No problem, Betsy. A manager and a catcher love a pitcher that will take the heat for having a rough day. One thing that you haven’t seen, other than from the media and “fans” is finger pointing. It’s been a rough start as a team, but, there have also been a lot of positives. If they can hold close until Rodriguez, Wang and Bruney get back healthy and to normal and for Sabathia and Chamberlain to settle in , this will be a hard team to beat. Hard to figure whether some pitchers are pressing because of some spotty offense, or if the offense is pressing because of spotty pitching. One thing that has been solid is the defense. NYY is near the top in turning DPs. The last 2 years, they’ve been near the bottom.

  18. ZMAN7777 April 25th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

It’s a long season, but this bullpen is awfuland exhausted and the starters aren’t giving them innings. They need some easy, blowout wins very soon.

  20. The Stranger April 25th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

If Theo Epstein had been given $1,000,000,000.00 to spend on the Yankee roster over the last 5 years, how different would it look?

We would have a legitimate major league CF, that’s for sure. It’s a premium position, s/b driving in runs & making a tangible difference. Instead, it’s a black hole.

The bullpen would be comprised of guys who can actually get outs in crucial situations, not a collection of stiffs. Yes, I said it, the pen is full of stiffs (apart from Mo, & poor Brian Bruney whose arm is going to be the equivalent of Scott Proctor after a horrific incident with a meat grinder).

Sweet sassy molassey, this is getting ridiculous. Brian Cashman s/b tarred & feathered, instead he’s lionized by the beat writers. Is this Bizarro World, or what???

  21. RockinDaBronx April 25th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

another slow start for the Yanks, Sox will have their June Swoon. But both these games were winnable. Ugly just ugly.

McCarver maybe the worse announcer on the planet, I thought he was going to crap his pants over his amusement by some fan’s slightly audible comments during the game. Fox is so bad, they make me appreciated YES.

  22. ZMAN7777 April 25th, 2009 at 9:40 pm

Stranger — I happen to agree with you on Cashman. As I’ve been saying, he does less with more than almost anyone I know. He constructed this team — not Joe Girardi.

    Trivia Anyone?
I’m watching “Run Silent, Run Deep” A very good Submarine movie. Star Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, Don Rickles, Jack Warden among others. We all know that Bill Lancaster (Burt’s Son) wrote “the Bad News Bears”. What is the other connection between the Bad News Bears and Run Silent Run Deep?

  24. ZMAN7777 April 25th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Guys, CF is not a strength obviously, but it’s clutch hitting and pitching that have been killing this team for the past couple of years. Cashman did nothing to improve the bullpen this offseason, and the expensive starters have not delivered thus far. And, of course, Wang has been batting practice.

  25. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption April 25th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

The Stranger — Wonderboy hasn’t been given too much less than that and he still doesn’t have a real major league CF… or SS for that matter. Get off his jock.

  26. E-gawa April 25th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

“LETS NOT FORGET THIS IS THE SAME CASHMAN WHO DIDN’T WANT TO RESIGN AROD.”

Exactly. Before anyone trashes him.. just remember that.

  27. DT April 25th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

    Breaking News:

Using his “in the best interest of the game” clause, commissioner Bud Selig has announced that the unbeatable-amazing-unstoppable (editors: add your own adjectives here) Boston Red Sox must play half of their baseball games this year away from Fenway Park.

Currently Boston has played 11 of their first 17 games at home, where they haven’t lost since their opening home stand against defending AL champ, Tampa Bay.

Boston is currently appealing the decision, hoping for a reduction to only 25% away games.

  28. The Stranger April 25th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Maybe Cashman can get Gene Michael & Bob Watson to assemble another core for him to run into the ground.

  29. ZMAN7777 April 25th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

That’s a fair point E-gawa, but there have been plenty of mistakes made.

Hey folks, I’m watching this game on dvr. I was going to watch all the way through before commenting on here but I’m just too excited! Up 6-0 and I smell more runs to come! Woo hooooooooo, sweet payback!

  31. ZMAN7777 April 25th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Right now, we don’t have any bridge to Rivera. Phil Coke is promising, but every other reliever has at least a 50% chance of imploding on a given day. Or am I watching a different team?

  38. pat April 25th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Every GM makes mistakes in who they did and didn’t sign.

How many complaining now were saying this team stunk in January? Most thought the upgrade in pitching and 1st base was going to be enough.

Some even wanted Swisher or Nady gone because both weren’t necessary. Glad that didn’t happen now.

You can have back-ups for your starters but having back-ups for your back-ups is difficult unless it’s coming from your farm. The Yankees have only started rebuilding that recently so those players are still at the lower levels.

BD, you’re right – it was great news about Bruney. I’m happy for the team and happier for him.

I like this team a lot, but they frustrate me with the their inability to hit with RISP (like last night). In my immediate reactions to games, I tend to think pretty negatively (they’re not as good as the Sox, they’re not that good overall, etc………), but objectively speaking I know this is a good team with a lot of fight in them. They may not execute all the time, but they really don’t have any quit in them.

The bullpen is in shambles because of the bad SP. CC has got to get himself together as CB has said. Wang will be fine eventually. AJ is going to be exceptional – I still don’t doubt that. Maybe today was sort of a learning experience for him…..in any case, you learn more from someone during the bad times than during the good. He’s a stand up guy on and off the field and I have faith in him. I still think Alby is a good pitcher….The pen is shaky, but I really have to cut them some slack. They have been worked to the bone. Thank heavens for the Scranton shuttle or else their arms would fall off.

I haven’t read any comments – well, not many anyway. Just got home from Trenton. About 1/2 hour or so after we got there, they announced the score – Red Sox 12, Yankees 10. Since when I left home it was 6-0 Yankees, I really thought I either heard wrong or someone was joking.

    What the heck happened!

Trenton wasn’t faring much better. We left early. Ryan Pope was in command and then fell apart. Trenton loaded the bases in the first and didn’t score and still hadn’t scored when we left. It was 5-0. I think they’re getting in shape for the bigs.

    Seriously, though. What the heck?

And did I read the Red Sox have played almost all their games at home so far? What’s up with that?

Did Melancon get in the game or did Girardi hold him back?

    Oh my heavens.

    Very disappointing.

Anyone that thinks our pitching troubles are just going to go away, is in fantasy land. Please someone tell me the last Yankees team that had a pitching staff, that, AS A GROUP, performed even close to above even average for their careers ? Put on a Yankees’ uniform and MELT under the pressure…..lather….rinse….repeat….Add the heat of the BoSux rivalry and it wouldn’t surprise me if one of our pitchers literally started crying on the mound soon.

Nick in SF…Book the overs…..Once the club settles into the rountine of playing, which usually comes about in mid-May and the temperature warms up this team will be fine…The injury issues will be in the past, and they’ll have taken on a team idenity….It’s still a mix and match environment from the lineup to the pen….Some teams come together quicker when spared of injuries….If it is indeed Phil who gets the call, at least he’ll be wedged between CC & AJ….It’s been a bumpy April, but things will be fine….

just from a Yankee fan point of view & being close to the senior Yankee fan on this forum this team isn’t that good. The amount of runs they have given up is as bad as it gets..it all starts with pitching and this team dosen’t have it

  64. Joe from Long Island April 25th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

    Oh, for Pete’s sake!

Let’s do some aritmetic, why not –

    2 divided by 162, times 100 = 1.23%.

That’s what these games against Boston amount to.

    It’s April 23. There’s 145 – count ‘em – 145 games to play.

Our rotation has CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Andy Pettitte, Joba, and Wang. Mo is in the bullpen. And there are a lot of strong, young arms.

The lineup has Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Jorge Posada, a young stud named Cano, and will soon have some guy named ARod.

Will some of you please grow a brain?

And, in an update from Charlleston, they came back from 5 down to win 7-6. Pat Venditte saved his 5th this year and all 28 professional chances in a row. 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. gave up 1 hit throwing left, 2 strikeouts throwing right handed and 1 strikeout throwing left handed. all against the first four hitters on the team. all were hitting more than .290 before the game.

They took away one of Angelini’s errors tonight, so he only has 11.

Taylor grote hit a homer. Lassiter was 2-3 with 2 RBIs.

  68. joeman April 25th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

every game means something …if it’s Apr or Sept, a loss is something you can’t back….the bullpen is a mess and SP isn’t any better…can Joba ever pitch more than 5 innings, no matter what anyone says he’s not cut out to being a SP..his pitch count won’t let him be one

  69. Pat M April 25th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

One thing thant gets lost about today is that Bostn’s Ace was knocked about and the Yanks had 16 hits, vs the best of Boston’s pen….So as tough as things have been the past 24 hours…So take tomorrow’s game, leave Beantown knowing that they should have won 2 and could have won all three..Paplebom has not looked good all season..I watch him struggle when Boston was in Anaheim…Sox may have an issue in the makings with their beloved closer….

I was told, as I stood on line at Blimpies at a rest area, that Lowell’s HR was off the fists and a cheapie Fenway special. Haven’t gone to the video tape yet.

Having not seen the game, I’ll take a 6-0 lead w/AJ pitching most days. Sounds like an anomaly. Can’t wait to watch Cano’s ABs.

Hoping Pettitte can give us some length tomorrow.

Typical April – and happy Bruney only on 15 day DL>

Thanks for the updates GB – did I read that right? Angelini has 11 errors already in how many games? Wow……..

  75. Jeff NJ April 25th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

You know I realize that SJ44 post from earlier calling for Joba to the pen was probably a hoax, but I have to say, as a huge Joba in the rotation supporter, the pen’s performance the last few days and the injury to Bruney is enough to test my convictions. Francesca is going to go nuts with this topic on Monday.

  76. Betsy April 25th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Hughsie, lol…….I wish he didn’t have to come up yet, but here he is and I hope the best for him. He’s going to face a great lineup – it sure will be a good test for Phil.

Pat M, good points. There have been a few good things to take from these two games. I’m as negative as anyone (being a pessimist will do that to you), but some of these reactions are just so over the top as to not be believable.

  77. GreenBeret7 April 25th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Bad night for the Tampa kids. they were shut out on two singles (Laird and Romine). sublett with 4 strikeouts.

  78. Nick in SF April 25th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

mmmmm, Blimpie… Pat M, I didn’t have anything on the total. I did have the Yanks run line parlayed with the anti-Pavano bet. At least that part hit. :(

  79. CB April 25th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

“So take tomorrow’s game, leave Beantown knowing that they should have won 2 and could have won all three..”

If the team wins tomorrow then the outcome of this series will be fine.

Not optimal but winning 1 out of 3 isn’t bad at all given that they don’t have Alex, the recent barrage of injuries and the workload on the pen.

Biggest outcome from the day was that Bruney’s injury isn’t that serious. No ligament involvement. So he’ll be fine.

  80. GreenBeret7 April 25th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Bad news at Trenton, too. 5-1 loss as Pope Ryan I got knocked around. Curtis was 3-4 with 2 doubles and a stolen base. I think he’s quietly sneaking up the outfield ladder, hitting .364.

  81. bodhisattva April 25th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Well, it was either that or Roy Rogers. Being a vegetarian at a rest stop on the NJ Turnpike has it’s challenges.

BTW, King of America, awesome record. My favorite line (from Jack of All Parades):

“I can’t forgive you for things you haven’t done yet.”

(I think that’s my line to Marte).

13 games. He had been charged with two tonight, but, they changed one to a hit….out of pity, I suppose.

I’m really anxious to see if Venditte can pitch this well or close from both sides at a higher level.

Hoping to get there in June.

bodhi, I think we disagree about a number of things, but that’s my favorite line from that record too, though not my favorite song. From what I’ve heard, EC’s new record is going to be one of his best in years. I’m going to miss his shows here in August, they’re when the Yanks are in town. :(

  86. Betsy April 25th, 2009 at 10:51 pm

LOL I shouldn’t laugh, but your pity comment was funny in a sad sort of way. It seems to me that being at least solid on D is just a matter of work – therefore, I don’t get how anyone can be that bad defensively.

My pleasure, Bod. If you’re lucky, you’ll see Venditte pitch, and chances are, you can get a ball from Angelini. hopefully, though, not one during the game.

He just has so many things wrong with his defense, I think that it’s carrying over to his progression as a hitter. 54 errors in 140 games since last year and getting worse. The one thing he does well is track popups and fly balls. He also has center field speed.

  90. Betsy April 25th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

CB, agree about Bruney. I’m so happy for him………happy for the team, of course, but more so for him. I can’t imagine anything worse for a player than to suffer a serious injury that derails him – it must be a feeling of utter helplessness as you are reduced to watching your teammates from the sidelines, unable to help.

I think the Yankeees are a tough team – I don’t think these losses will have any adverse affect on them. Even if they get swept tomorrow, they’ll be ok. Tomorrow’s going to be rough, though – Masterson is good and Andy is due for a bad outing. I can see a carryover into the next series only because the pitching has been so bad and the pen is exhausted. I think the offense (frustrating as it is sometimes) will do the best they can, but there’s only so much you can do when your pitching lets things get out of hand.

Tex will not walk much once Arod is behind him.

    Lets get it going Yanks!

  92. bodhisattva April 25th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

    NSF,

Haven’t kept track of EC lately.
Saw him in New Brunswick years ago. He was annoyed by the drunks in the crowd screaming “Pump it up!”, and took his revenge by playing the first few bars before launching into what seemed like a 20-minute version of “I Want You.”

    EC at his spiteful best.

Not looking like the heir apparent I take it. Just saw a link of Venditte that was interesting. Wasn’t able to get to him in Staten Island, unfortunately. Anxious to have a look.

I really enjoy these sound bites, but there really must be a way to record it without it sounding like you are in a wind tunnel. It seems to happen to every audio clip, some worse than others.
