Scranton rolls along

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are 13-1. They outlasted Rochester 17-14 as Shelley Duncan drove in six runs.

Talked to Dave Robertson on Saturday, who said the SWB Yankees are having a great time.

“There’s no pressure,” he said. “It’s like everybody knows we’ll win. We were mad we lost that one game. The chemistry is great.”

Minor-leagues teams can be hard to gauge because the focus is usually on development, not winning. The idea is to push players to the next level, not necessarily win. You have to give great credit to Dave Miley and his coaches for the work they’re doing.

Question for fellow bloggers. What is the correct pronunciation of Melancon? I was under the impression that it was Mel an Kone, but the useless idiot Buck kept saying Mel ahn sen yesterday. Which is it? Sorry for the poor phonetics.

10-8 after today….and win the rest of our games in April, then WHO CARES about these first 2 tough losses. A new morning, a new day and a new chance to SPANK the BOSUX ! :-)

    ” Melancon — pronounced like “Mell-ann-son,” not “Mell-ann-cone” or “Mell-ann-con” – ”

    It is pronounced Muh-lan-son.

    It’s pronounced We-get-it.

  10. Sam April 26th, 2009 at 8:40 am

So what are the chances Duncan has something to contribute in the Bigs this year? and what are the chances he gets a chance?

  11. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption April 26th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Sam — If old man Beret is around he’ll disagree but Duncan was rushed as a younger player and along with the injuries it really messed him up. I wouldn’t be too quick to drag him up here when he is in a groove in AAA. I’d really like him to put an entire year together like he’s been doing so far and maybe trade him on a high note, or think about him in LF next year. I think if you bring him to the majors there is a really significant risk that he melts down and then you ruin any good he may be getting from this start IMO.

Pete, I noticed that these posts only go up directly after the RAB posts go up on the same topic. Oddly enough, your posts contain exactly the same information. At what point does reporting end and re-wording someone else’ work begin?

  13. Sam April 26th, 2009 at 8:57 am

Rob, Thanks. And what do you think about Miranda? It does seem like we need a significant bat off the bench, although the trouble with JM is that (as far as I know) he can’t play the outfield.

I wish Shelley could play third base.

I wish any of these guys could play third. Maybe Swish will volunteer.

…just like yankee management drew it up huh?

what the hell is going on?

a management couldn’t put a pitching staff together that would do this bad if they didn’t even try.

you could have 12 livan hernandez ‘s and not be this bad.

are the pitchers really that bad? are they ruined once they get here? who ruins them? what ruins them? the pressure of being a yankee? just what is going on?

because this is totally unequivocally unacceptable.

yankee management is paying about 75 million dollars for pitchers to so far have the worst pitching in all of major league baseball.

    30 NY Yankees 17 9 8 6.41 4 0 0 154.1 7 110 118 73 119 .28

    THIRTIETH !!!!

did i mention that no one is worse as of sunday, april 26th in all of major league baseball?

    i have a simple question?

how can a management spend so much and get so little in return?

there is no spin for this.

    this is an embarrassment.

    ========================
If Miranda were to come up he’d have to be more than a PH. Young players cannot rust on the bench and be expected to be savvy pinch hitters. He’s not Ruben Sierra. Miranda has real lefty power and can hit to all fields, and lately has begun to have some success against LHP. It would stymie him to sit on our bench. He’d have to DH a good deal to make it work.

Melancon is pronounced muh-lan-son. Phonetically its one of those /c/ as s things. The joys of being a literacy teacher where the new thing is phonics.

  20. Lost in Tex-is April 26th, 2009 at 9:31 am

I am sure glad we didn’t get J. Santana with his 0.70 ERA and waiting for CC. *joke

Honestly, this team is hitting the ball well enough for the most part, the RISP can improve but they are looking real good at the plate. Our losses have been due to pitching, something that has been quite unexpected. Although pitching has been pretty weak so far this year and a bit of a roller coaster, I have no doubt that arms will strengthen and they’ll come around.. yes including the BP.

I still don’t get Joe putting in Mo in the bottom of the 8th the other night tho. stange.. but who can say what would’ve happened otherwise.

the boston games have been anything but dull, that is for sure. wow.. least we were battling the entire time.. this team is showing heart, something we lacked last year.

    Don,

I interpreted that to mean even an old broken clock tells the correct time twice a day, implying even Buck is right once in a while.

Folks, there is reason to be optimistic:

    1) The Yanks have been playing without their best hitter. Leaving ego and insane salary aside, we cannot imagine what replacing Ransom/Berroa with A-Rod will do to this offense!!

    2) Wang will figure it out. How could he not? He’s proven to be a great pitcher in the past, and there’s no reason to think that he can’t get there again.

    3) Melancon – he has all the makings of the big arm the bullpen needs. If you have him and Bruney getting the ball to Mo, we’ll be much better than we’ve been.

    4) Robbie – he’s back and better than before. He’s gonna be a huge bat in this lineup.

Obviously nothing’s for certain, but it’s way too early for all the doom and gloom!!

  23. hardwired April 26th, 2009 at 9:40 am

On the plus side, we get to listen to Joe Morgan tonight. Awesome!

    ugh.

  24. jake April 26th, 2009 at 9:47 am

BRING UP DUNCAN ——-> send down Gardner!!!!! Gardner cant hit at all, and his speed isnt making a difference. We have melky that knows how to play just as good defense and can hit too. Start Duncan who has and has always had a TON of pop in his bat.
Now look at this lineup in a week:
    Jeter SS
    Damon LF
    Teixiera 1B
    Arod 3B
    Cano 2b
    Posada C
    Swisher CF
    Matsui DH/ Duncan DH
    Duncan RF / Melky RF

That is an amazing lineup….and you have a combo of bruney, melancon and mariano rivera and a pretty sweet pitching staff, we will be okay!!!!! and probably RLY GOOD.

Im sore PETER——–> Joba should be in the bullpen, his dominance has decreased because he had to pitch more than one inning and cant throw as hard as he can. Put Phil Hughes as number five when wang comes back…Have Joba, Melancon, Bruney setting up for Rivera….BETTER CHOICE!!

Not to change the subject but…

At games at the Stadium in the past where we’ve beaten the Sux but they have really given us a battle, I’ve walked away from the series only partially satisfied because while it is always nice to walk away with a win, it always leaves me feeling that the Sux are a problem.

Well, looking at these two past games in “retrospect”, I’m actually not as bereft as I was say last night. I think losing Friday certainly hurt as much as anything because it involved Mariano. A healthy Bruney and that game probably was ours. Now we are cobbling together our bullpen and another unlikely scenario occurred yesterday – Burnett didn’t shake off some calls that made him uncomfortable and ended up serving up a few cookies.

To say that we battled is an understatement. We could have walked away with both games. We didn’t. I agree with the posters who have said that we will only get better.

Let’s go and take tonight’s game and walk away with all the positives that we can.

    GO YANKEES!!!!!

  26. Trevor April 26th, 2009 at 9:48 am

I’m thinking if they did get Santana they would not have the quality depth that they do have. Who would have been the 6th 7th starters? Some journey man.
Although Santana is great. I think having Sabathia and a good 6th 7th starters is better.

“I still don’t get Joe putting in Mo in the bottom of the 8th the other night tho. stange.. but who can say what would’ve happened otherwise.”

Lost, I think if you think of it like a chess match it might make sense. Joe was sitting there knowing that he didn’t have Bruney and probably wouldn’t have him for the series. After Alby hit the batter and had the tying run on first, especially that late in the game, Joe was playing for all the marbles at that point. It’s always good to take the first game of a series, especially on the road, and the game looked extremely winnable at that point. Putting Mariano in, again with the knowledge that he was not likely to have his 8th inning guy for the next two games at least, seemed like the best way to insure a win.

A calculated risk that 99% of the time works out.

My thoughts on why it happened.

  29. bodhisattva April 26th, 2009 at 9:54 am

Duncan cannot hit a breaking ball.

Lupica has morphed into Peter Gammons – South. They deserve each other gulping down some lousy chowdah.
Keep heads up Yankee fans. There’s [only] 144 games left.
It will all come together sooner than later.

  31. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down. April 26th, 2009 at 10:00 am

    It’s a brand new day.
    Let’s get a win tonight

The SWB Yanks are doing well. Good to see.

  32. Web April 26th, 2009 at 10:22 am

Taking Gardner out and putting Duncan in doesn’t make or break this lineup. I don’t see how it becomes amazing once that switch is made. It would probably make it worse because you lose Gardner’s speed and defense, even though, I agree, he is off to a bad start with the bat.

  33. hardwired April 26th, 2009 at 10:33 am

The Yanks are on an historically bad run, from Buster Olney:

“But beneath the ugliness of those numbers, it gets worse. Brian Bruney, who was supposed to be the set-up man, is on the disabled list with a sore elbow, and Damaso Marte has an ERA over 15. Jose Veras struggled with his command again in the marathon against Boston Saturday and is part of the reason why the Yankees have become only the fourth team since 1900 to give up 15-plus runs in at least three of their first 17 games in a season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the other three are the 2000 Blue Jays, the 1951 St. Louis Browns and the 1904 Pittsburgh Pirates.”

And yet, the Yanks are still above .500. We KNOW this team is not going to remain historically bad, so it’s just a matter of riding out the storm until reinforcements arrive.

  34. Sam April 26th, 2009 at 10:34 am

The question of the day: Has there ever been a worse broadcaster than Joe Morgan? Or, for that matter, a better one than Ken Singleton?

  35. Borough watch April 26th, 2009 at 11:27 am

Morgan has plenty of company. The Fox boys are no day at the beach and the Boston announcers sound like they’re broadcasting a high school game.
And then there’s Steve Phillips and a host of others on ESPN. Just 2 minuutes of Hawk Harrelson in enough and the list goes on up to and including Michael Kay.

  36. Rob Thompson April 26th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

I am oh so proud of how dominant our minor league teams have become. SWB wins every night and dominate!! There is so much talent starting to brew in the system since Cash-money re-stocked a few years ago. Can’t wait to see the team start to bear the fruit of their labor. Hang in there guys – help is on the way!!!
