A-Rod: 1 for 6 with a homer

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 30, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This just in from Tampa:

Alex Rodriguez was 1 for 6 with a homer and two walks in the extended spring intrasquad game in Tampa. He faced right-handers Matt Richardson and Jose Ramirez in the intrasquad, extended Spring Training game held at the Yankees’ Minor League complex.

He did not run the bases at remotely full speed according to observers. When he homered in the third inning, he jogged to first then headed back to the dugout.

Given the informal nature of the game, such things are allowed.

  2. colin April 30th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Was there someone at second when he hit the home run?

  3. RalphieD April 30th, 2009 at 12:50 pm

well i think this is good news

  4. five iron from fenway April 30th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Matt Richardson is a pretty good prospect. Will probably be in short season league this year.
    Never heard of Jose Ramirez.

  5. bodhisattva April 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Maybe when he comes back he can limit himself to trotting :)

  6. pat April 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

    m

I swear I wasn’t dreaming. He was talking to Hannah Storm and they talked about how she knew about the media craziness that surrounds Alex because she was down in Tampa for the ST press conference.

He said he was at the plate as he was talking to her and a few seconds later said he just struck out for the 3rd time. Said the other 2 ABs were fly outs and he looked rusty and not near ready to be back playing.

  7. C April 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

I don’t get what’s the point of playing extended spring training. They should just let him play he can’t be worse than pena

  8. Frontier April 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Did he get benched for not running hard?

  9. Betsy April 30th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Nice to see Alex back in the swing of things as it were…this team could use him.

  10. curious April 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

“I don’t get what’s the point of playing extended spring training. They should just let him play he can’t be worse than pena”

    yes, what a great idea.

  11. m April 30th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Was this the first time Alex faced live pitching?

Still think Alex should DH for a bit when he comes back. Pena can cover third.

O/T, but Toronto has won every series of they’ve played this season. The streak is on the line tonight, down 2-1 in a 4 game set. We’re still only 2 back in the loss column. BTW, caught a clip of Harold Reynolds talking about Toronto’s offense. The staff has told them to swing early at fastballs, never mind working the count. Result? First in runs scored and 5 guys on pace for 20 HR, when they only had 1 guy hit that many last season.

  12. Andrew April 30th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

1-for-6 and he only trotted? A-Rod looks done. Get him back on the juice. Get Yuri Sucart on the phone.

  13. Selena Roberts (posting from inside ARods closet) April 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

    Interesting.

  14. yankeefan23 April 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Someone may have mentioned this before, but looking at the picture of Nick Swisher ringing the opening bell, doesn’t he look a lot like K-Fed? That’s Kevin Federline. He also looks like Lieutenant Dan a little from Forest Gump.

  15. Andrew Leo April 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

    nice job B—h T–s

  16. The Stranger April 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Don’t look now, but the Sox have shut down John Smoltz for at least a week.

Never, ever a good idea to invest in a pitcher with a re-built shoulder.

  17. Trevor April 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

He looks like he’s lost weight.

  18. Jason @ IIATMS April 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

He got fined $100 for not hustling, but only left a $15 tip.

3 out of first in april?

man feels like just a year ago we were 10-15 out.

I wish. Imagine Mattingly in his prime and Cano in the same lineup.

i dont want to jump to the negative about our leading hitter, but cano has what 16 rbis? he should have 30 with all the men he leaves on base. has to hit better with people on base, as the rest of the team.

  24. bodhisattva April 30th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Cano hitting w/RISP will come. He was robbed a couple of times in those situations, in which he’s generally having extended ABs.

He’s among the most talented hitters in the game, and still learning his craft. Only good things ahead for Robi & the Yankees.

  25. m April 30th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Should have some fireworks in Tampa tonight. Beckett v. Garza.

I can’t believe it, but espn.com actually expressed concern about Beckett. With the exception of the first start, his fastball has been very hittable. There was a graphic 2-of-17 fastballs hit. After that, fastballs hit at about a .500 clip.

  26. GZA April 30th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Are they gonna play tonight? Both Weather.com and Accuweather.com are calling for rain all night. It’s like a three-plus-hour trip for me to get to the Bronx. Hopefully, if they’re gonna call it, they call it soon.

  27. Al from BK April 30th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

“Was he on steroids in high school?” he said. “I think probably so. I worked out with him when he was 18. He could lift almost as much as I could.”

That is from the Roberts book. Seriously I’m thinking about writing a celebrity tell-all with circumstantial evidence and anonymous smearing. I only hope A-Rod returns better than ever and puts a sock in the media’s collective mouth. We need A-Rod to win as much as some people don’t want him on this team.

  28. gayle April 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Shelley Duncan tweet of the day

Breaking news!! Selena Roberts reports ARod didn’t tip hooters waitresses!! OMG!!! First swine flu then this! Arghhhh! WoooopidieDooo!!

  29. bodhisattva April 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Anyone not wanting ARod to succeed needs to check their Yankee fandom at the door.

You cannot reasonably root for your cleanup hitter to fail, while urging the rest of the team onto success. That’s schizophrenic. Learn to live with ARod or find another team.

  30. Coach6423 April 30th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Francessa shockingly has nothing to say about Joba to the Pen.

  31. Patrick April 30th, 2009 at 1:31 pm

“Francessa shockingly has nothing to say about Joba to the Pen.”

    Shocking. :)

  32. bodhisattva April 30th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

So then what is he going to talk about for the next five hours? Bronson Arroyo?

P.S. Wasn’t it hilarious when ARod kept referring to Arroyo as “Brandon”?

  35. Cal April 30th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

“Francessa shockingly has nothing to say about Joba to the Pen.”

LOL, a lot of them are quiet today, the usual suspects are not to be found, but rest assured if he had allowed 5 runs in 5 innings the board and opinions would have been flooded with Joba to the pen.

He could have probably pitched a complete game last night, but Girardi got cute after 88 pitches and brought in Albaladejo who tried his best to blow even that lead. Its reasons like what Albaladejo was doing that has people say move Joba to the pen, none of those guys can be trusted in close games, sadly.

Which is why I eagerly wait for Bruney to return and keep my fingers crossed about Melancon. The rest of these guys are scary.

  36. Rich April 30th, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Alex tipped pitches to opposition players in blowouts in the hope he got the favor returned huh…so the “meaningless/stat-padding” HR debate goes back a long time ;)

  37. Rich April 30th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

And Mike the Mouth has joined the cull-crew of Sherman, Lupica and co. in being silent on Joba-to-the-pen. I mean it’s only taken 16 starts and a sub 3 ERA

  38. Coach6423 April 30th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Wow, Francessa sticking up for Joba in the roation to a point…..Schizophrenic

  39. bodhisattva April 30th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Melancon doesn’t need your crossed fingers. He’s brilliant. You can set your watch to that.

  40. jennifer April 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

    gayle- that is shelley?

  41. Hokiehill April 30th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

I’ve got a feeling Selena’s book is going to end up reading like a 255 page tabloid. I won’t waste my money on that trash seeing as I’ll get every tid-bit I’d ever want to know from sports radio and this blog. Anyone who buys that book just doesn’t have a clue.

  42. Iris Brito (adiehardyankeesfan.blogspot.com) April 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

    go yankees !

A-rod no matter what you’ve taken, just come back and produce big for us!!

  43. curious April 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

“i dont want to jump to the negative about our leading hitter, but cano has what 16 rbis? he should have 30 with all the men he leaves on base. ”

you may have a point, but i have to point out that Cano hasn’t had too many bad AB’s this season.

if he is making outs, they are usually line drives hit right at someone.

  44. gayle April 30th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

    Jennifer – yes

  45. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day photos April 30th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Don’t want to offend anyone by saying this, and I am not sure it will happen, but I hope Molina catches Burnett tonight.

    Thanks for not killing me.

  46. Rich April 30th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

Trisha I’m in agreement…it probably won’t though. Girardi seems like he wants to get the Posada-Burnett combo rolling along.

  47. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day photos April 30th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Rich I’m sure you’re right that he does. He said as much to Michael Kay when Kay asked that exact question about Burnett having Molina catch his games. What Girardi said, and of course it makes sense, was that in the playoffs Posada would be doing the catching so it was important that he work with all of the pitchers. And of course that’s true. But there’s also a part of me that assumes that Girardi can also see when a pitcher works better with one catcher than another and might try to get those games coinciding.

  48. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day photos April 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I have to wonder if all of the newest garbage circulating will have at least a short-term impact on Arod.

  49. Benny Blanco April 30th, 2009 at 2:14 pm

The book is being releases MAY 4th. WHAT A *&&^&.

  50. Benny Blanco April 30th, 2009 at 2:14 pm

    released*

  51. curious April 30th, 2009 at 2:16 pm

who cares about the book? she has no sources. it’s going to be a flop.

  52. Docbooch April 30th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Trisha, loved your pictures. Your still down on Posada even after last night?

That book was supposed to come out the day before the Yanks home opener but got mysteriously pushed back right after ARod was rumored to come back may 15th. I’d really like for Selena Roberts to fail with this

  53. Joltin' Joe April 30th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Watch Arod come out smelling like roses after all this. After being down on the guy for so long the fans will rally around him now like they did for Giambi. He has come clean, at least to using, even though he might still be but who knows about others including Pettitte who admitted using for a certain period only. One big clutch hit and he will be on his way, all will be forgotten. The worst is over. Selena Roberts=overkill=vendetta=profit margins.

  54. JohnC April 30th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

    GZA:

Rain is supposed to come in later tonight around 10, so they should be able to get the game in. Tommorrow’s game could be in jeopardy as rain is being forecast all day and evening.

  55. saucY April 30th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

i still don’t ‘get’ twitter. but it seems like more celebrity types use it than facebook..

  56. Steve April 30th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

so ARod played in an extended ST game down in Tampa. What does that mean? I know what those three words mean, and the point of it for ARod. But was it a scheduled minor-league game and Arod played in it? Which teams played?

Along the same lines, how do “simulated starts” work for rehabbing pitchers?

Are they playing against actual teams, or does each club have a practice squad like in football?

    Thanks in advance

  57. We Miss Paulie April 30th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Wow, Arod was hated at Hooters ’cause he didn’t tip well? Is that the best she has?

This whole things sucks. Like Pete said we all know Arod isnt a saint. but the specific timing of this book to bring him down, its really despicable. The media (Daily News, ESPN) Is fueling this, which I knows sells papers, but doesnt the Daily News know that they’re bringing down one of NY’s players? Thats just not right and I’ll never buy one of those rags ever again.

Who cares about all this now? I’m over it. He did what he did and I’m sure a ton of other players did too. Leave him alone, the NY media should be ashamed and I hope this all turns into nothing and the book is a disaster. Play ball.

  58. Benny Blanco April 30th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Steve Phillips said on espn that this could back-fire on Selena because the constant bashing will make him look like the victim.

  59. We Miss Paulie April 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Benny, I hope so. Just let the guy play – this is all conjecture on Selena’s part so until something illegal is PROVEN, let him play ball.

  60. Benny Blanco April 30th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

    Kay’s questions are killing me…LOL

    “How did he look?”

    “did he look bigger?”

” how did he look running?”

  61. ez April 30th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

a little late with this report but fyi – Arod struck out to end the game today with the bases loaded down by a run ;)

  62. TexasYanksfan April 30th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

OK, A-Rod cheated. We know that. Don’t condone it. Not proud of it, but I’m getting tired of all these stories and reports and crap. Just want him to come back, stay the hell away from Madonna and jack 40 home runs.
