    Our pitching lineup looks good.

  2. Coach6423 April 30th, 2009 at 10:38 am

    I like these matchups

  3. Rebecca-Optimist Prime April 30th, 2009 at 10:39 am

The Weaver/Pettitte matchup should be a good one.

  4. Trevor April 30th, 2009 at 10:40 am

    I’ll take 3 of 4.

  5. Mark-Cant Touch This April 30th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Well if there was ever a time for us to get back at the Angels for all the years they have killed us, this would be the time.

  6. JRB April 30th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Hopefully they’ll have no problem with Ortega or Palmer…Weaver and Saunders will be the challenge…just out of curiosity, is Jeff Weaver still in baseball somewhere? or did his crappy pitching get him to the point where no one wants to take a chance on him anymore?

  7. m April 30th, 2009 at 10:43 am

Be prepared for a dog fight. Angels are off to a rough start. They’re too proud a team, and Socio is too good a manager for them to lay down for us.

We need to win these games and hopefully gain on Boston (@ Tampa).

  8. Tex's Friend (CC has it together, Hughes is the man, Joba too) April 30th, 2009 at 10:45 am

i like it but i would still split up the two lefties.

  9. pat April 30th, 2009 at 10:45 am

Jeff Weaver was in Dodgers ST camp. Don’t know if they released him or if he’s pitching in the minors for the Dodgers.

  10. pat April 30th, 2009 at 10:46 am

Boston plays Tampa and the Jays play the O’s so Yankee wins mean they pick up games on someone in the division.

  11. m April 30th, 2009 at 10:47 am

    pat,

Jeff needs to call up Omar!

Thanks to Putz, they can’t even win their one game a week.

Heard a terrible stat yesterday. “7″ Number of potential Santana wins blown by the bullpen last season, “5″ of those in the 9th. Had been looking good this season…until yesterday. Putz putzed up.

  12. Rishi April 30th, 2009 at 10:50 am

can facing his old team help Tex get started? I mean, I understand he’s not that great in April, but the calendar flips tomorrow…we should be seeing some progress, right?

  13. Rich April 30th, 2009 at 10:55 am

Loving some of these matchups. CC will have a bounceback game at the stadium to make up for opening day and I think AJ will be strong. I really like our chances of taking 3, the Halos aren’t playing good baseball and they miss Vlad and Lackey. This is the series where Tex, AJ, and CC earn their stripes in the new cathedral.

  14. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 10:56 am

This is an important home stand to start building omentum after four good starts in succession. Yes, I consdier eight innings and four runs to be good… not great, but usually good enough to win and bonmus points for resting the bullpen. It’s amazing to me that six innings and three runs is a “quality start” but eight inninngs and four runs isn’t. The latter of the two is a better performance all things considered.

By the way will someone please tell Ken Singleton that moving up the “official at bats” list ranks with the most meaningless accomplishments of all time. Spare us the updates…. PLEASE! Next thing YES will tell us that Mariano Rivera has warmed up more times than any Yankees righthander since WWII

  15. m April 30th, 2009 at 11:00 am

Be prepared. Bobby’s fearless around the wall now. I saw him make plays he never made with the Yankees.

The Angels still do one thing better than us, they’ve got better fundamentals. I loved Bobby when he was here, but I hope he’s as productive as Giambi was in his visit in another uni. I just don’t want Bobby to beat. Don’t think I can bear all the “Whhhyyyyyyy did we let him go?????”

  16. pat April 30th, 2009 at 11:01 am

    Rishi

    Tex’s bating averages historically:

    .250 April
    .288 May
    .279 June
    .282 July
    .314 August
    .309 September

He’s not going to approach his career avg. this year in April but hopefully can get it turned around in May with geting more comfortable, being healthy and having better line-up protection.

They needed him to exceed career norms this month and unfortunately that didn’t happen.

  17. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 11:03 am

Jeff Weaver pitched in the minors last year and was not good. He is with the Albuquerque Isotopes and is scheduled to pitch tonight. He’s 1-0, 3.55 in 12 2/3 innings.

  18. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 11:04 am

Would anyone rather have Abreu in RF and Swisher at 1B instead of Swisher in RF and Teixiera at 1B?

    Didn’t think so.

  19. m April 30th, 2009 at 11:04 am

Didn’t realize that Smoltz was due to join the Sox May 6th.

But they’re shutting Smoltz down for a week, saying it’s a preventative measure because he’s been going at it pretty hard.

I guess that pushes back his timetable?

  20. R*d S*x Hater April 30th, 2009 at 11:05 am

There you go again. Making foolish predictions again. Really, the Yanks could take 3 out of 4?

The Angels have mastered the Yanks in every facet of the game.

The very, very best the Yanks could hope for is 1 out of 4.

  21. Tex's Friend (CC has it together, Hughes is the man, Joba too) April 30th, 2009 at 11:05 am

    .250 April

    ___

Man .250 would be nice right now. not .195.

  22. steve April 30th, 2009 at 11:06 am

2 rookie pitchers and 2 pitchers who are off to good starts

    Not going to be easy

  23. m April 30th, 2009 at 11:07 am

    86,

Swisher had some nice defensive plays for Joba, huh!

I don’t get worked up about Tex, because Matsui, Cano, Jeter, Posada are doing well.

As long as we’re run producing, I don’t fret about individual .baa

  24. AZTravos April 30th, 2009 at 11:07 am

AJ must set the tone tonight

  25. hardwired April 30th, 2009 at 11:08 am

There are things I would like to do to/with Hannah Storm that violate many of the conditions of this site.

  26. Wave Your Hat April 30th, 2009 at 11:09 am

I guess Joba won a reprieve from being sent to the bullpen or to AAA last night.

Haven’t seen many people arguing that this morning.

  27. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 11:11 am

Swisher is having a great year. Hey, if he keeps it up and makes the All-Star team I will happily payoff that steak dinner I promised. I just can’t remeber who I promised it to, Patrick?

On an unrelated note why on earth are the Yanks still carrying 13 pitchers? Time call up Shelley Duncan who is raking in Scranton and send out Albaladejo who was simply wretched last night.

  28. declineoptions07 April 30th, 2009 at 11:13 am

declineoptions07 is curious as to why the commentary on Arod on Sportscenter was so tame compared to what we see here.

no reference to: Aroid, him having 300 advisors telling him what to do, him being a detriment to clubhouse chemistry, and most importantly, no public thanks to Hank for bringing him back for 9 more years

  29. Betsy April 30th, 2009 at 11:18 am

Would love to see AJ come out and just dominate – put his last game to rest and take the team on his shoulders like he’s done before. I’m still not presuming anything with this lineup against someone with poor numbers – they always turn to mush against those types (and rookies as well).

  30. Wave Your Hat April 30th, 2009 at 11:18 am

“On an unrelated note why on earth are the Yanks still carrying 13 pitchers? Time call up Shelley Duncan who is raking in Scranton and send out Albaladejo who was simply wretched last night.”

Shelley Duncan isn’t on the 40 man roster so you would have to move Nady to the 60 day DL or release one of the 25 pitchers on the 40 man roster to do that.

IMO, the Yanks ought to bite the bullet and move Nady to the 60 day DL, or DFA one of those pitchers, and activate someone for the bench, although I prefer John Rodriguez to Duncan.

Or, they could just activate Miranda, and send down one of their 8 relievers.

John Rodriguez would be more useful on the bench IMO than Miranda, but either is preferable to the eighth reliever.

But, it seems pretty clear the Yanks just don’t care about the bench.

  31. JT April 30th, 2009 at 11:22 am

Where are Harper, Madden, Lupica, Sherman & Bondy on back to back domination by Hughes & Chamberlain? I guarantee these clowns would have written negative articles if they both had bad outings… “Hughes is a bust and should have been traded for Santana” “Chamberlain can’t cut it as a starter and should be in the pen”

  32. all sorts of riffraff April 30th, 2009 at 11:23 am

I don’t put much stock in pitching matchups, but those do sure make me want to smile.

I’d put Rodriguez over Shelley as well. With Melky and Matsui coming around, though, I don’t see the need as much anymore. I might actually rather see Duncan brought up in place of Berroa, and Tomko/Aceves in the place of whoever Girardi trusts the least in the bullpen….probably Albie.

  34. pat April 30th, 2009 at 11:24 am

“On an unrelated note why on earth are the Yanks still carrying 13 pitchers?”

Girardi said yesterday he is considering adding a position player. Problem is his options are Miranda and Cervelli without a 40 man rostermove.

Has the Berroa Era come to an end to free up a spot?

  35. aaron April 30th, 2009 at 11:24 am

    Angels will sweeeeeep!

    book it

  36. m April 30th, 2009 at 11:27 am

    pat,

I think they cut bait with Berroa when Alex comes back. Pena’s got the job until then.

Don’t see how why they would replace Berroa with Miranda at this point. Swish is Tex’s backup.

Who came up earlier without getting into a game? Was it Rodriguez?

  37. Doreen April 30th, 2009 at 11:32 am

I’m glad AJ Burnett is pitching for the first time this season coming off a win by the team, especially after last weekend’s fiasco.

The Yankees pitching matchups are almost always going to look good on paper. So, all I’m willing to say is they have a decent shot to be in all the games. But the Angels historically give them tons of trouble, so I’ll consider it a success to take 2 of 4 and to have the team not fall apart against them.

Btw, another testement to the Angels’ fundamentals is that Abreu already has 8 SB this year. I guarentee, if he was with the Yankees, he wouldn’t have that many until late June.

  41. Tex's Friend (CC has it together, Hughes is the man, Joba too) April 30th, 2009 at 11:35 am

Or, they could just activate Miranda, and send down one of their 8 relievers.

Either him or Shelley (if they find a way to get him on the roster). Nady will not be out 60 days (however if it is retroactive, it may be 60 before he is back).

  42. PittsburghYankeeFan April 30th, 2009 at 11:36 am

    Angels–Yawn.

    Important series? Why?

Let Sabathia and Burnett get some work in and try to adjust a bit. Pettitte is himself, and Hughes looks promising. Joba is Joba.

The bullpen will get sorted out. I’m looking at June/July for the Yankees to take control of the division.

  43. Scorpio April 30th, 2009 at 11:38 am

Spot on. Add Raissman to your list and the NYC Press hatemonger club will be complete.
Oh, Lupica still waiting for you to write an article on the Mets blowing yet ANOTHER Santana game…by the great re-vamped BP to boot.

  44. m April 30th, 2009 at 11:38 am

Ooh. Surprised. Someone doesn’t like Schilling. From danpatrick.com:

The MLB Network’s Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams joined the show

Williams discussed when Curt Schilling would hide his face in a towel when he was on the mound in the 1993 World Series. Williams said he confronted Schilling afterwards, but Schilling didn’t have much to say.

“In 1993 Curt Schilling won 16 games. I saved 12 of them, without blowing one,” Williams said.

Williams said if he was going to hit Schilling it would have to be in the back, because Schilling would probably be running away.

  45. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 11:40 am

It’s time to see if they can make some two-for-one deals moving arms for position players. Veras, Ramirez, Jackson, Clagett and Alabaladejo may have some value to add a decent infielder or outfielder.

To have 24 or 25 pitchers on the 40-man is just ridiculous.

  46. ray (sox fan) April 30th, 2009 at 11:48 am

    m

Actually through out his career Schilling has put his face in the towel. It probably had little do with Mitch Williams.

I don’t care that much for Schilling because he has always had a big mouth but I am sure he is not losing sleep over the fact that Mitch Williams does not like him.

  47. gayle April 30th, 2009 at 11:48 am

The Williams/Schilling dislike is nothing new anyone who has been around Philly sports for a while knows good and well how much they hate and I do mean hate each other.

  48. Steve B April 30th, 2009 at 11:50 am

I’d look away with Mitch Williams pitching too.

  49. m April 30th, 2009 at 11:52 am

    ray,

I was more amused about the Schilling running around comment. And the fact that a former “colleague” didn’t make any bones about how he felt about the guy.

Won’t be long before we see Schilling behind the mike or camera. Can’t decide if it’ll be on satellite radio or BBTN.

Good luck to your clovers, but not your sox. ;)

  50. pat April 30th, 2009 at 11:54 am

Bob Holtzman reporting Alex is 0-5 in the scrimmage game and looks rusty and not ready to return to MLB action.

  52. five iron from fenway April 30th, 2009 at 11:55 am

I am certainly not a Schilling fan but he just disclosed yesterday that his son has a mild form of autism. Curt and his wife will now by very active in raising awareness and funds for the cause. Over the years in Boston he has certainly given of himself to many, many charitable causes.
The guy has a big mouth, but he does use if for good.

  53. ray (sox fan) April 30th, 2009 at 11:56 am

“Good luck to your clovers, but not your sox.”

Hey m, I think the “clovers” will need luck to just get by Chicago!

I will be shocked if it isn’t a Laker/Cavalier Finals this year.

  54. Steve B April 30th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

“I am certainly not a Schilling fan but he just disclosed yesterday that his son has a mild form of autism.”

Didn’t hear that. Knew he had raised a ton for ALS research.

    how did sportscenter go pete?

  56. Steve B April 30th, 2009 at 12:02 pm

If the Yankees don’t take three in this Halos series, it is a very bad weekend. Who the heck are these guys the Angels are throwing?

  57. five iron from fenway April 30th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Steve – he was on EEI this morning.
I will butcher the spelling but the son is 9 and was diagnosed with asbergers two years ago.

Bob Holtzman reporting Alex is 0-5 in the scrimmage game and looks rusty and not ready to return to MLB action.

Not shocking. The guy hasn’t played in a game in 7 months and had surgery on his hip less than two months ago. People who expect Arod to go through that and not have a 6-8 week spring training and be ready to go right away are expecting too much. But what else is new in regards to Arod.

  59. m April 30th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

    pat,

Hopefully he was 0-5 against Wang!

re: Schilling. Shonda’s skin cancer foundation’s pretty far-reaching as well, one of our local schools got a grant from them.

  60. SJ44 April 30th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Bob Holtzman is now a scout? I know he’s the Non-Latin version of Pedro Gomez, (trailing Arod as Pedro trailed Bonds for ESPN) but, I didn’t know he has added scout to his skillset.

Of course he’s going to be rusty. The guy hasn’t played a game since March.

Not exactly “breaking news” from the folks in Bristol.

As far as Joba to the bullpen talk, as long as the bullpen remains toxic, that talk is going to be out there and not go away.

At this point, it almost doesn’t matter what Joba does as a starter. If they can’t fix the bullpen, the talk will never die and if Wang and Hughes are back and pitching well, there is going to be a lot of pressure on the Yankees to move him back there.

Is it right? Of course not.

But, when you put together a 210 million dollar team with so many holes, the bullpen being perhaps its biggest one, that’s the talk that is going to dominate the day.

  61. Doreen April 30th, 2009 at 12:06 pm

I think Schilling’s also raised funds and awareness for skin cancer.

  62. mark April 30th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

this year and last year – all we heard was how Duncan was tearing up AAA pitching. at what point do the Yankees look to trade him? (while he has some value) or get him in the bigs to contribute?

  63. SJ44 April 30th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

    Shelley has no trade value.

Scouts know he can’t hit a curveball and is closer to 30 than he is to 20. A death knell for any prospect.

    His AAA stats are meaningless.

Unfortunately, he’s a career AAAA type of player.

Nice kid but valueless when it comes to trade possibilities for the Yankees.

  64. tampayank April 30th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Don’t know what holtzman is talking about, the other sportscenter guy said he was 1 for 3 with a homerun, I’m sure Pete w have his stats soon.

    So – Off-topic:

    Cautionary tale:

Be extremely careful when purchasing tickets online – make sure if you think a transaction did NOT go through that it indeed did NOT go through.

I now have 12 extra tickets for a May 29th Trenton Thunder game. They do not give refunds. They will do exchanges. So now I have to figure out if I can either find more people to come on the 29th OR does my family want to go to 3 or 4 more games (depending on whether my daughter is home) this season, or some other creative thing. We may want to go to more games, but if we HAVE to go to more games, well, it’s not the same!

    AHHHHHH!

Like I wanted to spend an extra $162.00!!!! (Yes, AA games are pretty inexpensive – $12 a ticket plus fees).

Oh, and of course, I have to do this before May 29th.

    Thanks for “listening.”

That’s one of the things I’m mulling over. Good suggestion.
    Thanks.

  69. GreenBeret7 April 30th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Sure thing, Dorren. You can always use it as a charitable deduction. add $38 for sodas and hotdogs. It’ll be the best day some lucky kids have in years.

  70. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Doreen — If you do that or send a little league team to the game I’ll pick up $ 40 of the cost. Three others and we have it covered… you can buy the hot dogs!

  71. 86w183 April 30th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Shelley would be more useful on the bench than an 8th pitcher in the bullpen.

If they can deal two from the group of Veras, Ramirez, Albaladejo, Claggett and Jackson to get someone better than Shelley for the bench that’s fine with me. Needs to be someone who can play OF and preferably hit RH to replace Nady in the rotation.
