Pete,

As much as I respect your blog, surely even you need to realize that 90% of people on here are in support of Girardi's stance on the 'private life' aspect of this book. Alex Rodriguez is a baseball player. Call him out for using drugs 5 years ago if need be, but all this other bull--- is bordering on celebrity hysteria. You keep claiming that he is a public figure, so his life is open to scrutiny - sure - but true baseball fans could not care less about who is dating, for how long and where they were seen. A lot of people on this blog are disappointed in YOU for seeming to enjoy the tabloid style nature of everything A-Rod when perhaps you are the best Yankee baseball commentator going around.

The people here who support A-Rod the baseball player are the people you should be backing. Not Selena Roberts.

Please align your priorities.

Peter,

I don't understand how you can call Selena Roberts a serious journalist? Wasn't she fired from the New York Times for her biased reporting on the Duke Lacrosse players? She continued going after those guys long after it was proven they were innocent.

As far as the A-Rod book is concerned you really believe that the following statements from her book, which have been all over the airwaves, are informative:

Anonymous Texas teammates thought A-Rod was tipping pitches;
Anonymous Yankee teammates saw A-Rod and Kevin Brown with HGH;and
Anonymous sources from high school said they thought he was taking steroids back then.

Don't you think this stuff belongs in the National Enquirer?

Peter, so what you're saying is that we all have to be locked up in a room and nver come out so that people don't talk about you and don't write about? Are you being stupid? Eeven people you are not part of the entertainment business or works for government are being written on without their consent.

And I agree with Girardi NO ONE is perfect. We are all bound to make mistakes in life.

Everyone craves attention.. look ate you for example, you're not good looking, but you write incredibly well and you know your stuff. You have people who are following you in a way. Heck, maybe you a stalker, you never know! But digging deep into someone's personal life and write all the negatives to get money for your benefit... that is something that's unforgivable. We all know Alex is not a smart cookie, and that perhaps all the things he has done are connected to the fact that his father abandoned him, but that is none of our business. NONE.

I just hope everyone turns the page and leave at that. I love baseball and frankly, I'm tired of people talking about this God damned book that has some shady sources (who apparently are Selena Roberts' voices in her head (until proven differently)) and written by someone who has earned a living from destroying peoples lives.

I don't know about you, but I think Roberts is smart. She blabbers Alex's steroid usage, he admits it. Now she can say whatever she wants in her stupid book, act all gooddy goody and say her sources don't want to be revealed, and everyone is going to believe everything she writes in that book or in any other book she may write about anyone. She can say a very good source told her that Alex's real father is Elvis and everyone would be believe it.

that's all I'm going to say about that.

God bless Girardi!

"However well-intentioned Girardi may have been today, his comments will only serve to continue the story."

...because reporters will hype them as if they're a big deal.

I think the problem I have with your characterization Pete is that you say the book is about steroids. Let's be honest...at least from what Roberts herself has told the media, the book is 10% about steroids and 90% about Alex's ego. I mean just look at the title. I think it is a little inaccurate to say that this is a book she wrote to expose Alex for using steroids. That is part of the book...just like in Joe Torre's book he ripped on Arod. But just like Joe Torre's book was 90% about other subjects...this book too will be 90% about other subjects. The problem is that Roberts' other subjects are Alex's personal life. They read like tabloid stories. It's this 90% of the book that people primarily have a problem with...not the questions about steroid use.

Pete,

Here's the problem. You make it clear that Selena Roberts has the constitutional right to write whatever she chooses, so long as she's not libeling anyone. Fair enough. Unfortunately, she also enjoys the right to Never Be Criticized By a Fellow Reporter -- a group that includes you, of course -- and this leaves your readers with only half the story. Or, if nothing else, to write that half of the story ourselves.

Her atrocious reporting on the Duke Lacrosse team is a matter of record. Her arrogant refusal to address her own errors in that regard? Also a matter of record. The Yankees Republic blog ran a nice piece covering her past writing on A-Rod, writing that shows an astonishing and frequently dishonest bias. Now you can ignore this in the name of occupational solidarity.

But understand it makes your comments on this something less than reliable.

Pete, there's a part of the interview where you ask Girardi (I'm pretty sure it's you, if it's not I apologize) about Alex. Girardi is complaining about someone's personal life being made into a book and scrutinized, and you say that he's admitted to steroids, "doesn't that open him up to this sort of scrutiny?" Alex admitted to steroids after the book was written and leaked information came out. So how could admitting to something in a book then open someone up for that book to be written? It's circular logic.

Pete said: "I’m also not sure why Girardi brought up religion. As far as I know, nobody has ever mentioned his religion or anybody else’s in relation to the Yankees."
_______

Actually Girardi faith was raised as issue in the fight with Seattle years ago (the same one in which Derek and Alex kind of joked around and Chad Curtis took issue with it).

Girardi basically got punched and refused to fight back because of his religion, and it was brought up afterward.
