when is hughes going to pitch now?

  2. Fran

Pete, are the Yanks going to pitch Hughes tomorrow night or skip his turn? Plus the weather not looking good for tomorrow night either.

  3. JK

  4. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

What’s the record for rain outs in a row?

  5. rich james

im so glad the yankees didnt put a retractable roof on this cathedral

  7. Zooboy

I blame A-Rod. No, Selena Roberts. No, A-rod…

Oh relax. Rainouts happen, no big deal.

Plus any game postponed means one more game with A-Rod in the lineup instead of Berroa.

  11. Mike R

Game has been rescheduled to be played when Tex emerges from his slump, A-Rod returns, and the pitching remembers how to pitch ;)

  12. Betsy

Too bad for Phil, but I’m glad they didn’t try playing in these conditions. Tomorrow’s game against the Sox looks in doubt too – Joba will be skipped. Phil in the pen on Tuesday(if possible) for an inning or two of work before his next start – that’s what I would do

  13. t-rock

Glad that today’s game (and the one against Boston tomorrow most likely) will be postponed.

One less game that A-Rod is out and we’ll be much better prepared to play later in the season with Bruney, Wang, A-Rod, Nady, better pen, Teix in mid-season form etc.

Also good to give Swisher and Teix a couple days off.

  14. Bob(The Original)

So I guess with no game thread to generate hits, we can expect another sensationalized A-Rod post here this afternoon.

  15. miggs

Hughes is not going to pitch out the the pen. Makes NO sense.

When Joba was skipped did he pitch out of the pen? Does that happen on any sort of consistent basis for any starter? Of course not.

Not sure why they would do it with Hughes.

Funny, you’re always so concerned with babying Hughes and not rushing him. Now you want to throw him out of the pen to keep him “sharp”. Hughes hasn’t pitched out of the pen since the 2007 playoffs. Laughable.

  16. Texeiramvp (JobaCyYoung)

    Well this sucks

  17. Doreen

Who made a schedule that had the Red Sox coming to Yankee Stadium on a Monday? Don’t they usually come in for a weekend series? Just weird.

  18. CaptainsCorner

I hope they skip Hughes in the rotation. I don’t want to see him pitching against the Sox..you want to keep his confidence up. Also keep everyone else on there day.

  19. K-Zone

Sept 14th seems the most logical for a makeup date

Both teams are off… Angels start a series in Boston on the 15th, we are at home against Toronto.

We go out to Anahiem on September 21st actually for a 3 game set.

  20. Texeiramvp (JobaCyYoung)

True, the later in the season we play the better, but I was looking forward to this one.

  21. Boston Dave

“is AROD a good person? ”
    ————
Starks, of the people who have met him and reported about it, they all seem to say he is a good person.

SJ44 has spoken about it. Now, they may question some of his personality traits, but I haven’t heard many say he is a bad person.

  22. Dr. J

Angels will be MUCH healthier later in the season too.

Though this was a bad matchup for us today in Saunders with our depleted lineup and with the way our pen is pitching.

  23. Boston Dave

“Hughes is not going to pitch out the the pen. Makes NO sense.”

    —–

well, I could see it for a couple innings if the Yankees need someone in a long game.

It might be a good idea to get Hughes a couple innings if they plan on skipping his spot in the rotation because of the rainout.

It wouldn’t throw off his start. Pitchers throw in between starts. This would just be in a real game.

  24. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption

Have to say I’m glad that the game got called. I’m studying for my Admin. Law final on Tuesday and these 4 hour breaks are really biting into the outline time!

Betsy I like the idea of Phil coming out of the pen on what should be his throw day, keep him sharp.

On a related note, if Wang comes back healthy and effective before the year is over I for one would put Hughes in there as a 3+ inning swing man before I’d use Jobamania out of the pen. Hughes has a similar if not worse innings cap than Joba so finding a way to limit him while still getting productive outs from him will be key.

  25. Jeff D.

Hughes and Jobber will throw their normal bullpen sessions, maybe an extra one.

Though if it is a blowout game, I suppose they might use Hughes for an inning. Not Joba though— don’t want him to reach back and throw high 90s on a throwing day… thats what got AJ Burnett hurt to begin with.

  26. Boston Dave

“Angels will be MUCH healthier later in the season too.”

    ——-

well, the Yankees should be MUCH better later in the season.

    If they aren’t, it’s a moot point.

  27. Doreen

I’m liking the rain out today. Rest all around, Phil not having to pitch in the rain or mucky mound, Yankees take the series. :)

  28. CaptainsCorner

Speaking of is Arod a good person. I thought this was nice to see from yesterday’s game:

Pirates minor leaguer Kyle Bloom faced Rodriguez five times and struck him out twice.

After both left the game, Rodriguez autographed and gave his bat to the left-hander.

  29. Sean Serritella

CaptainsCorner, that’s a pretty good idea for the Yankees not to start Hughes against the Red Sox.

  30. Boston Dave

at least this rainout isn’t going to lead to a doubleheader.

if the Yanks pen remains an issue, a doubleheader is a nightmare scenario.

  31. chris

So does the rainout mean that you will answer an email or two Pete?

Point of info, Selena Roberts has refused to go on any radio station outside of the Dan Patrick show, which is associated with SI.

    Why would that be?

  32. Boston Dave

“CaptainsCorner, that’s a pretty good idea for the Yankees not to start Hughes against the Red Sox.”

    ——

I think Hughes is mentally tough enough to handle it. It’s at home too.

I’m not saying he should start, but it shouldn’t matter that much that it’s the Sox.

  33. Jeff NJ

I hope Joe doesn’t decide to be too cute and start skipping pitchers. I say let Hughes pitch the next game they play. At this point, we just don’t know which of our pitcher’s is the most likely to win a given game. Keep the rotation in tact even if it means CC gets an extra day off, I’m sure he could use it.

  34. lolfatpete

arod post is being written right now. 5pm est is my pool pick. anyone else wanna start the fat pete arod ‘hit’ generator pool? i have 5pm who’s in

  35. Boston Dave

“Selena Roberts has refused to go on any radio station outside of the Dan Patrick show, which is associated with SI.”

interesting decision, if true, because it limits exposure and potentially limits book sales.

up until now, her motives have likely been based on maximizing profits.

maybe she her motives are being changed to include protecting herself because her lack of credible sources will go under attack??

  36. m

Girardi doesn’t use starters in games. He’d rather go to the an OF, lol.

Seriously, they don’t want to mess with these guys routines, especially the younger ones.

  37. Boston Dave

“I hope Joe doesn’t decide to be too cute and start skipping pitchers.”

    ——

they have innings limits. it’s not “cute”. It’s the MO.

  38. chris

    Boston Dave

She flat out refused to go on WFAN with Boomer and Carton. They literally called her up while on the air and whoever is in charge of her PR said no. She knows that outside of the friendly confines of SI that people might ask her about how she doesn’t have any named sources or how named sources have specifically refuted her claims. Something every journalist is ignoring including Pete.

At Scranton, score is 6-5, Scranton. Hacker isn’t having much of a day.

Austin Jackson is 1-2 with a run scored. Also had a double play and assist from center

John Rodriguez also 1-2 with a 2 run double. Todd Linden is 1-2

In Tampa, it’s tied at 1-1. Wilkin De La Rosa through 5 innings, 4 hits, one run (earned), 0 walks 7 strikeouts

Montero is 0-2 with strikeout, Romine is 2-2 and an RBI

Mitch Hilligoss is hitting like he did 2 years ago is 202 (.313)

  41. Rob Thompson

The rainout today is clearly A-Rod’s fault. Also, I’ve got a painful blister on my finger this morning. Thanks alot Alex!!!

  42. Donnie Baseball23

If Hughes is expected to stay in this rotation this year or even come up for the stretch run/ or if they plan on him being one of the 5 next year he will have to face Boston at some point in his life. I dont think Boston is the all mighty and will ruin his career if he has a bad outing. I know we got swept but I still think the Yanks will be a better team than the Sox this year.

  43. Boston Dave

    chris,

very interesting. like I said, all of her moves thus far seemed to be about selling more books.

it sounds like some back peddling is going on now.

BOS @ TB on TBS HD here in NYC

Didn’t “Selena” die in some murder by her biggest fan 10 years ago? I’m pretty sure I saw this on lifetime’s movie of the week.

  46. GreenBeret7

  47. Boston Dave

“If Hughes is expected to stay in this rotation this year or even come up for the stretch run/ or if they plan on him being one of the 5 next year he will have to face Boston at some point in his life.”

    ———

Agreed. Hughes shouldn’t be skipped because it’s Boston. He should be skipped because they may need his arm at the end of the season, like Joba, and his innings need to be kept in check.

  48. Boston Dave

I had to drive from Visalia, CA up to Fresno, CA just to watch today’s game because of MLB.com’s silly blackout rules.

    Damn rain!

  49. CaptainsCorner

It obviously helps her when she knows the person that is interviewing her. Anyone interviewing her from SI she knows and she will know the questions before hand or be asked questions that make her look better. If that is possible. She also wants to make sure that the person doing the interviews sees the book as ok, otherwise they could blast her on the radio for being scum. Alot of people are obviously not going to be ok with this type of gossip nonesense so she doesn’t want to catch the person that thinks it’s a joke. Also when alot of it is written with “sources” it is hard to have alot to say in an interview when it is written by what random people have told her.

  50. Betsy

Miggs, I don’t like Phil in the pen – not at all. However, how would you keep him sharp? He’s not going to pitch tomorrow – that means he’ll have had close to 10 days or so by the next time his spot rolls around.

  51. Boston Dave

I’m putting the game on now but it looks like Brad Penny might be having a better game.

    5 k’s through 3. If he starts missing bats, that’s a problem.

  52. chris

    Boston Dave

I doubt she will back peddle. She still believes she was right with all that stuff she wrote about Duke.

It just bugs me that everyone in the press is praising her (Heyman the latest to do so) and not one person is questioning this. As I asked Pete via email, the vast majority of journalists are university educated. In university everything must be sourced from a named credible source or it doesn’t count. Why do journalists think they are above this. Why are they exempt from this practice?

  53. Boston Dave

“However, how would you keep him sharp?”

    ——

Betsy, he’s going to throw one way or another. It’s either going to be in a game or in a side session.

Might as well use him for 2 innings if the need arises.

  54. Bob(The Original)

She’s gonna be on the MLB Network with Costas tonight.

Pretty disappointed in that. I absolutley love what they are doing with the network, but this stinks of an ESPN stunt.

  55. Michael Kei (Igawa) !!y/FhIC8T301

… Another thought, I can’t wait until *Jason Bay* is a Yankee. Buying my 44 jersey now, damn, that’s retired… 38 jersey? … if Bruney gives it up?

  56. Boston Dave

    “Boston Dave

I doubt she will back peddle. She still believes she was right with all that stuff she wrote about Duke.”

    —–

well, I mean back peddle from the moves that have been made so far – namely to increase exposure and book sales (changing release dates, for example).

Ann Coulter, for example, doesn’t just go on right-wing television shows when she is pushing a new book. she goes on left-wing shows as well to get more exposure.

It certainly points to Roberts being very careful and perhaps worried about her ’sources’ being questioned.

  57. Harold

If you let the rotation stand (let Hughes start the next game we play), then you are inconveniencing everybody.

Everybody will be pitching on 7 days rest in their spot. It would look like

    Hughes vs. BOS
    Jobs vs. TB
    Burnett vs. TB
    Andy @ BAL
    CC @ BAL

Might as well scratch Hughes and Joba rather than throw everyone off. If it was just one game, we could probably keep the rotation on schedule but since tomorrow’s game is likely going to be PPD., it’s best to keep the big 3 on schedule.

  58. Betsy

I’m not for skipping Phil because it’s Boston, just because I want everyone else (AJ, CC and Andy) to stay on rotation.

And Miggs – yes I know that they didn’t do that with Joba. However, Andy has at times thrown an inning out of the pen on his off day – for one time, I think Phil can hack it. If Wang comes back healthy, then Phil goes down to AAA – in no way am I advocating him as a regular member of the pen. That’s silly.

  59. DMan

“I’m putting the game on now but it looks like Brad Penny might be having a better game.

    5 k’s through 3. If he starts missing bats, that’s a problem.”

Let’s hope not. Penny still has talent, if he can put it together and stay healthy, he will help them ALOT.

  60. Rose

Hope they are wrong but rain in the forecast for Mon., Tues. and Thurs.

TBS is showing Rays and Sox.

  61. Pat M

By Memorial Day we’ll be seeing Joba in the 8th inning…Bruney inthe 7th, Mo in the 9th….This all is contingent on Wang being healthy, and Hughes filling in the back of the rotation….This solves the bullpen issue, as it becomes the best pen in baseball….That’s the only solution for winning in 09…..They can sort out Melachon, Coke, Marte ( left specialist )etc….6 inning starts and game is over….

  62. Betsy

That’s what I think, BD. It’s just for one time – I would not make this a regular habit with Phil.

  63. Vrsce

    chris

The press corps instinctively know when to protect one of their own. As a group they tend to band together when one of them is under attack.

They have such a low standard of integrity, both individually and collectively that this quaint self preservation is laughable.

  64. chris

Costas might ask the right questions but I think he will probably be too soft on weak answers.

You need someone to say, where are the named sources? If she says she doesn’t have any, the you have to get in her face about it and say that given the damaging nature of the allegations that it is just not good enough.

  65. Betsy

Penny’s been so bad that one game isn’t going to concern me. The Sox’ rotation has been lousy – Yanks aren’t the only ones with issues.

  66. CaptainsCorner

“She’s gonna be on the MLB Network with Costas tonight.”

I like the MLB Network and it is disgusting that they are sinking that low. The network is supposed to be about baseball not this gossip nonsense. How is what he does off the field in his private life worthy of being a 1 hour special on a baseball channel??!! Very pathetic for them to promote something like this. Unless ofcourse SI paid a ton of money for the spot.

  67. Boston Dave

Penny does look better so far (I’ve only seen the last several at bats)

better location on his fastball (92-94)
    locating the curve
    mixing in a decent changeup

it’s all about the location, and he has it so far today

  68. GMAN

Baseball has rules…so does journalism (ethics too).

    In blogism…the are no rules.

  69. Boston Dave

“I like the MLB Network and it is disgusting that they are sinking that low. The network is supposed to be about baseball not this gossip nonsense.”

    ——-

don’t fool yourself. MLB Network is about ratings.

I hope Costas at least asks a few real questions and it’s not all softballs.

    PAT M – Agree

The bullpen after May is going to be sick IF Wang comes back healthy

  71. chris

    Vrsce

I realise what you are saying and I agree with you. With that being said it is even more irritating when you see the press get on their high horse and demand the truth from people such as Arod as though they are entitled to it.

  72. Bob(The Original)

Let’s wait and see how her appearance goes.

Don’t be surprised if some of the guys like Harold Reynolds call her out and stick up for Alex.

  73. Betsy

Pat M, I hope you are wrong about Joba….

DMan, didn’t Penny just have one big year in the NL? Thus far he’s gotten smoked – he’s going to have a lot of adjusting to do in the AL over the course of a long year. Help the Sox a LOT? We’ll see.

  74. randy l.

i just had a really bad experience.

i was looking at a selena roberts photo and i saw an enlarge button…

  75. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

Pat M: You really want to risk destroying Joba’s arm like that?

Honestly, Joba is the better starter than Phil. So why would you take the better starter out of the rotation?

There are other options for the bullpen. They’ll figure something out.

  76. Kevin at SHU

    Pat M-

I agree with you and that statment. If Phil continues to pitch well I would not demote him to Triple AAA just because Wang comes back up. I honestly think we will see Joba in the bullpen and send a reliever that is not helping us at all down to Triple AAA. That probably gives up a few more wins as opposed to keeping Joba in the roatation and sending Hughes back to Triple AAA.

  77. Boston Dave

hopefully I put the jinx on Penny.

runners on 2nd and 3rd, one out :)

  78. GreenBeret7

Austin Jackson is 2-3, two singles and a stolen base (7). Hitting .380

Todd Linden is 2-3, hitting .348 also had his 21st RBI

  79. Bob(The Original)

Verlander is mowing down the Indians today.

  80. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down.

    2-1 Rays now

  81. Clark

Penny can be tough if he throws strikes

He did make tha All-Star team 2 years in a row (06-07), started it in 06. Was injured a lot last year.

  82. m

Phil is on IP watch. I think they’ll skip him. Especially, with the forecast for early in the week. Can’t keep pushing guys back.

But so is Joba. Don’t think they’d bump him and let Phil pitch. They seemed determined to let Joba approach 30 starts.

  83. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

GB: Angelini have an error yet?

  84. Buddy Biancalana

    Pat M

    Agreed with you too.

  85. Code X

If Smoltz gives them anything… wow. They are just loaded with depth. They don’t even miss Dice-K with how well Masterson has pitched. And they still have Buchholz.

I wish we had that kind of depth, then we could put Joba in the pen.

  86. Boston Dave

“Penny can be tough if he throws strikes”

    ——-

    you said it.

walked one, bloop double, and then fell behind 3-1 to Bartlett who blooped a single to center

he hasn’t been getting ahead in the count the past few batters.

  87. Trevor

My guess is everyone gets pushed back. So Hughes will go tomorrow.

  88. GreenBeret7

If Costas asks questions like he did in March, it’s not worth watching.

  89. Zolio

Pat M – Agree. That;s what I would do too when Wang ocmes back.

    ————————————————————

They don’t play until 5:00, Rebecca. He had two more last night. He’s played in 21 of 23 games and has 16 errors.

  96. Mark21

    Penny’s last 5 years

    2008 – 6.27 ERA
    2007 – 3.03 ERA (AS appearance/ 2nd in CY voting)
2006 – 4.33 ERA (lights out 1st half, started the ASG)
    2005 – 3.90 ERA
    2004 – 3.12 ERA

He’s really not that bad. Aside from 08, those numbers are better in that same time than Burnett….

  97. Betsy

Code X, the Sox SP has not been good. Lester’s been bad this year, Beckett’s been worse, Penny’s been bad…….I’m sure Lester and Beckett will be fine, but that’s a big IF with Smoltz.

I disagree with those who say that Phil stays if he’s pitching well – he’ll go back to AAA and if all is right with Wang, that’s where he’ll stay. It’s vital to keep Joba in the rotation. Phil will have his day next year – I think he’s going to be terrific.

Code X, I wish the Sox were as good as you think they are with their pitching. Their most reliable pitchers have been Masterson and Wakefield.

Beckett has not looked good at all so far, and Lester at least so far has not been the pitcher he was last year.

Papelbon has been getting the job done, but he has been allowing more hits than usual and it has been taking more pitches.

And just as I predicted: Everyone is pushed back and Hughes goes tomorrow.
It will only be his second time facing the RS.

  103. Boston Dave

“using that logic, the Sox should put Beckett in the pen?”

Since when was Joba a 20 game winner and a #1 starter?”

    ——-

Beckett won 20 games once because he was given a chance to be a starter.

I guess you’re right, if they move Joba to the pen after 1 year of starting (and a better ERA than Beckett had when he was the same age) he’ll never be a 20 game winner.

If you are saying Joba doesn’t have the talent, fine. Otherwise, you’re analogy is seriously flawed.

A case can be made to put him in the pen, but I’m guessing you’re not the one who is capable of making it.

  104. GreenBeret7

De La Rosa’s day is through. 5 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs (earned) 1 walk, 7 strikeouts. One of the runs that scored came after he left the game. He’s only pitched 14 innings so far in 3 starts. first 2 runs allowed. 9 hits, 4 walks and 22 strikeouts in 14 innings.

Pete’s war on A-Rod has certainly gone to the next level. It’s weird.

Why would any player talk to Selena in the first place?

She is starting to give the guy superhuman qualities… Next we are goign to hear A-Rod was channeling his Kabbala spirits, who then gave teh pitcher and the batter the pitch at the same time.

  110. Boston Dave

Justin Verlander picking up where he left off against the Yankees

    7IP 2hits 1run 11K

at least he didn’t just save his best stuff for the Yanks

  111. Kevin at SHU

Betsy then how do you propose we solve our bullpen issues? Are you just going to hope that Marte, Veras, and Ramirez sort their issues out? By putting Joba in the bullpen that covers the 7th inning and 8th inning with Joba and Bruney when he comes back and the 9th goes to Mariano. I am getting sick of all the bullpen implosions and I do not think digging down to our farm system is the answer. I also do not want to trade anyone as to get a half decent reliever we are going to have give somebody up.

  112. Betsy

Mark, but remember that Penny was pitching in the NL……..

  113. E-gawa

“Beckett won 20 games once because he was given a chance to be a starter.

A case can be made to put him in the pen, but I’m guessing you’re not the one who is capable of making it.”

You’re basing everything on assumptions and predictions. The difference here is that when he’s in the pen, there are no assumptions and predictions.

BTW, How did Beckett do in the pen?

  114. Betsy

LOL Randy…….I guess if they redo the Twilight Zone movie and Dan Akroyd asks whomever if he wants to see something REALLY scary, he can pull out his Selena Roberts mask.

I really don’t like to make fun of her looks or anyone elses’ for that matter – it’s about the least important thing in the world to me. I’m just so angry at her that I’ll break my personal rules this once

  115. GreenBeret7

Wasn’t aware the the Yanks had a 20 year old shortstop at Tampa named Emerson Landoni. Signed by the Marlins out of Venezuela in 2005. Marlins released him and NYY signed him in 2007.

“Betsy then how do you propose we solve our bullpen issues?”

    ——-

how about getting 7 innings from the starters?

it’s easy to point to the bullpen, but as CB said earlier, it’s more about the starters.

it doesn’t matter who the Yankees have in the bullpen. it a bullpen has to routinely pitch too many innings, it’s tough to succeed.

  118. m

Ah, it’s fun watching the Rays run on another team. They are abusing Tek right now. Let’s up the Rays are too tired to run on us. haha.

The rotation’s out of whack. They could’ve used this as an opportunity to realign it a bit.

But at least we get to see if Hughes can pass another test. Let’s hope the Sox come in licking their wounds. It maybe be rainy in NYC, but the forecast is looking pretty good at the Trop.

  119. Betsy

Wow, that’s a shock. NO AJ against the Sox?

  120. Trevor

Rays are just running wild on the RS.

  121. Betsy

Forget AJ against the Sox, though now he’ll be pitching 2 extra days rest……so will everyone els. Where’s the logic?

  122. gayle

Will Carrol tweet. Hope I am not reading too much into this but big news to me means surgery

“Big news on Nady coming later today.”

  123. rconn23

We will find out a lot about Mr. Hughes tomorrow. It’s a tough assignment for sure.

He attacks hitters the way he did against Detroit he’ll be fine. He tries to nibble around the strike zone, he’ll be in trouble.

  124. Boston Dave

    Will Brett Favre retire already?

A source (not one of Selena’s either) says Favre will play just to get back at the Packers.

If it’s even true, I assume that means the Vikings?

  125. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down.

The weather for tomorrow doesn’t look too promising for baseball either. But I guess we will see.

Favre? Go away and stay retired already

  126. GreenBeret7

Austin Jackson is now 3-4 with an RBI double, thanks to, sit down for this…..a stolen base by shelley Duncan.

gag. TBS crew waxing poetic about the Sox pen. They don’t mention that Okajima is hittable now that the league knows him. Buck said that Papelbon can shut down the 9th with just a few pitches.

Thanks for the info, Buddy. damned…I was really hoping that the Yankees would take a crack at him.

  131. Hank

Of course, if the game is played tomorrow, then you just push everyone back a day. That’s no big deal.

But if tomorrow’s game is rained out, then you have to skip one or both of them.

  132. Danny

Why isin’t Austin Jackson showing any power?

  133. Will

This site is filled with some of the most pessimistic Yankee fans I’ve seen in a while.

  134. Zach in Port Jeff

Is TBS really allowed to have a segment aptly titled “Viagra Moments That Changed the Game”?

  135. Trevor

“Why isn’t Austin Jackson showing any power?”

He’s probably just adjusting despite his average, to AAA pitching.

  136. Right side

    Sox pen is good.

Delcarmen has yet to allow an earned run this year in 14 innings

Ramon Ramirez has yet to allow a run in 14.1 innings.

Aside from the Yankees, Okijima has been lights out

And even Saito who is the weakest link in their pen has a lower ERA than Edwar, Veras, Marte, Albaladejo, Robertson.

Hunter Jones has been good too.

Their pen is dominant. Who do we have outside of Bruney that is any good? Don’t say Melancon, he is unproven.

  137. Phil

They’ve shortened AJack’s swing. His power will come back when he gets used to it.

  138. Trevor

I didn’t realize Price was struggling in AAA. He’s lacking a 3rd pitch. I’m surprised there isn’t talk about him being in the pen since he only has 2 pitches.

  139. Bo knows

And I wouldn’t get carried away by Jackson yet. In 72 at bats he has 18 SO’s. That’s 25%. He’s coming along nicely, still needs time to work on breaking balls.

  140. bodhisattva

Carl Crawford just stole his 5th base of the day. 1st and 3rd for Rays, Pena coming up, 1 out in the bottom 7th, Tampa up 3-1. Delcarmen in. Waste that RS bullpen Tampa!

  141. YankeeJosh

    “Pat M

By Memorial Day we’ll be seeing Joba in the 8th inning…Bruney inthe 7th, Mo in the 9th….This all is contingent on Wang being healthy, and Hughes filling in the back of the rotation….This solves the bullpen issue, as it becomes the best pen in baseball….That’s the only solution for winning in 09…..They can sort out Melachon, Coke, Marte ( left specialist )etc….6 inning starts and game is over….”

Late in replying, but what happens if Joba has an excellent May in the rotation? He was the Yanks best starter after Wang went down last year. If he performs as expected in the rotation how can you remove him?

  142. bodhisattva

With bases juiced, Delcarmen just hit Burrell to force in a run. Tito going to BP. LOL.

    =======
During interview w/ESPN Radio, Price managed to be both diplomatic and adamant about not wanting to be a bullpen arm. He said the obligatory “I’ll do what I’m asked to help the team” but made his own personal wishes very clear.

  145. m

    Right side,

Not saying ours is better. They said the Sox pen is the best they’ve seen so far. Obviously, they don’t watch Dodger ball. Toronto’s been pretty good, too.

Another classic example of talking up the teams on the field for the viewing audience.

So not saying ours is better, just need to keep it real.

Put Masterson back in the pen, then maybe we have a conversation.

Delcarmen does have an earned run this year. ;)

  146. Bo knows

I really question whether that was Pat M that made that entry. Then we have Chris and ER that, instead of watching their team, are posting here. Almost as bad as the Yankee fans with their heads turned around to Boston. Boston fans have a reason for that. Why the Yankee fans have degenerated to that level is a real puzzle. They’ll start chanting about Boston soon. Oh, wait.

    ======================================
The Yankees at the minor league level are pretty obsessed with breaking bad habits before they become ingrained, working on plate discipline and turning out complete hitters.

As someone who saw AJax a fair amount before his “conversion,” – I can say that his change in approach has been dramatic. No one should be worrying about his power at this point.

Linden finished the day at 4-5 with 2 doubles, stolen base and 4 RBI plus an outfield assist from right field getting the runner at home. .361

Jackson finished at 3-4 with a double, RBI, stolen base and an outfield assist at third. .389

    Scranton wins 11-7.

Not a great day for the Tampa farm, though Hilligoss was 4-4, Montero was 1-4 RBI double, Laird was 1-4 with a 2 eun double and Romine was 2-4 with a double.

De La Rosa was a no decision, 5 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs (earned, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts.

Laird and sublett are in deep slumps

I am liking DLR’s command this year. We already knew he could get people to miss.

  151. Bo knows

There doesn’t seem to be much pitching at the AAA level this year. Four SWB regulars are batting 350 or better.

Jackson isn’t a power hitter. He’s a line drive and gap hitter. as long as he cuts down on his strikeouts, catches everything, gets his walks and steals bases, the home runs can wait. He’s also right handed, so stop thinking that he’s going to be an annual 25-30 home run hitter.

Yeah, this was only his third start…14 innings, so 4 walks isn’t bad. Still has a few WP but, that’s because his pitches move so much…and hard. 22 strikeouts and 9 hits. Not bad for a guy that only been pitching for less than two years.

  154. bodhisattva

Youkilis hits a 2R homer off Howell. In Tampa BP means Batting Practice.

I hope they tie it and they play 15 innings :D .

    Horne 3.2 IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 4BB, 5K, GO/AO 2-4. (first start since EST, I believe).

  157. Shred Em

Jackson is not going to be a power hitter…but he’ll definitely get a lot of doubles. I’d say in his prime maybe 45 doubles 20 homers and the Yanks would be very happy. It seems as if they’re grooming him to be a high average, all-fields line-drive hitter. And the on base skills are coming.

  158. Sean Serritella

I don’t know if you guys remember but Don Mattingly had no power in the minor leagues. Anything could happen to anyone. Maybe Jackson will develop more home run power. Maybe he’ll learn to hit it to right field and get home runs on pop flies.
