Peter,

I completely understand your unabashed support for Joba in the rotation... but to call people "stupid" this early into the experiment is a little short-sided. I maintain that he is physically not built to be a starting pitcher in this league for an extended period of time. A closing pitcher like a K-Rod, Papelbon, or Mariano in his prime is, perhaps, the most rare and valuable commodity in all of baseball. There is no doubt Joba could be that for us. However, there remains substantial doubt he can be a top-tier starting pitcher for the long haul.

So to continually rip people who disagree with you on this, a month into him being a starting pitcher... you'd better be willing to eat your words if come August and September (and October? didn't that used to be the most important month?) he can't do it anymore. Not to mention once you start stringing multiple seasons together.

Melancon is a victim of expectations – I never understood why people looked at him as a savior, not even having thrown 1 pitch in the majors.
Where are we getting 6-8 relievers? It’s not happening – there’s no one in the minors (not that I would trust) and who are they going to trade for?
===============================
Melancon isn't a victim of anything.

I don't think people with previous knowledge of him ever described him as a "savior" - unless you interpret a guy who can consistently deliver the ball to Rivera as such.

That, he can and will do. He is very talented, has three pitches and impeccable command. He also has a huge, fighting heart and no pulse.

Given those qualities, why wouldn't we be sky high on him?

"Girardi will be a great manager. Cashman is a great GM. Is he better than Theo? Who knows. Do you think he doesn’t try to make deals that make his team better? That Nady/Marte trade looked like a great deal at the time, and he brought the Yanks Teix, CC, and AJ."

Can we all just give the young guys and the young manager a chance to mature over not just a few games, not just a few months, but (gasp) a few years? What do you say? Instead of calling for people to get fired or be shuttled back to AAA.

How long did it take Greinke to get where he is now? Think Joba won't get there? Hughes? I think they will.

You know Sabathia will get hot.

AJ is serious about his work and you have to believe he will battle.

Teixeira is a notoriously slow starter.

My expectations? I am excited to see what happens within a 3-year span. I don't expect them to make the playoffs this year. But I do think we are looking at a speedy, powerful championship calibre team in three years when Cano, Joba, and Hughes (and others) have grown into their own nucleus and role players and vets like CC,Teixeira and even Rodriguez are still contributing as well.

I do think that Jeter, Posada and Rivera have played in their last playoff games. But I think this is more than OK. Their teams gave us more than any baseball fan could ever want on this earth.

It's time to turn the page, but you need time and space for people to mature and make mistakes and get better in order for that to happen. Otherwise, we're a free-agent reliant, old, win-now team and that just never seems to work. We have been buying players near-past-their-prime in an effort to plug holes and it's time to stop. Cash has done all he can within the environment he is asked to work. I think we owe it to the team to see what the next 5 years brings before we panic and clean house.

People giving Cashman a hard time fail to realize all of the good midseason trades recently. The trade for Abreu made playoffs possible that year. The trade for Marte and Nady was absolutely ridiculous last year, even the folks on ESPN talked about how good that was for the Yankees. Then he picks up Pudge. Those two trades SHOULD have been enough to push the Yanks to the playoffs. No one could have seen Pudge and Marte struggling so much. Then there's the Swisher deal. I don't think anyone can argue how helpful that trade has been.

He had Cody Ransom as a back up infielder, probably the only flaw of the starting roster this year. He picked up Kevin Cash as a third string catcher, who had been backup for a World Series Champion team. He also locked up Molina who did such a brilliant job with the pitching staff last year and is regarded as one of the better defensive catchers out there. The bullpen was one of the best in the majors last year, and everyone looked great in Spring Training.

Nothing can be said of the pitching staff, they simply haven't been performing. That is NOT on Cashman. Maybe in a few years when AJ and CC start showing some wear and tear you can yell at him. The starting 5 is the best on paper 5 in the majors, no question. Plus he has Hughes, Kennedy, and Aceves waiting for some depth. Maybe you can argue he should've picked up an extra Major League arm in reserves, but Aceves showed promise last year and Hughes obviously has potential.

Cashman is not the man to blame.

Regardless, the team always starts out slow. They'll turn it around, and if not, I'm sure Cashman will make some good move in the next few months.

Let’s be honest. You’re an idiot. You don’t throw at batters with breaking pitches.
——————————————————————————————-

I wasn’t aware Joba’s breaking ball hit 93MPH on the gun. Seems like only an idiot would believe that

------------------------------------------------------------

The ball moved inside and he was trying to jam the hitter. Remind people again why a pitcher with two outs and a runner on base would hit a batter and put another runner into scoring position with a .310 hitter with power coming up?
