A-Rod’s final day in Florida?

Peter Abraham
May
6

Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to play another extended spring training game in Florida today. And while the Yankees are playing super-secret with their plans for the third baseman, it sounds like he’s headed for Baltimore on Friday.

Joe Girardi said he and Rodriguez discussed a scenario where A-Rod would play today, rest tomorrow and then join the Yankees. Or he could play two more games in Florida.

Regardless, it looks like Rodriguez will be back a full week earlier than predicted.

Meanwhile, one-time A-Rod pal Madonna showed up Costume Institute Gala at the Met wearing what appeared to be a peacock on her head.

According to Wikipedia, here’s who Madonna has dated and/or married:

Dan Gilroy (musician)
Stephen Bray (musician)
Jean-Michel Basquiat (artist)
Mark Kamins (DJ)
Jellybean Benitez (musician)
Sean Penn (actor)
Warren Beatty (actor)
Tupac Shakur (rapper)
Tony Ward (porn star)
Vanilla Ice (rapper)
Dennis Rodman (basketball player)
Carlos Leon (fitness trainer)
Andy Bird (”a poor English drifter”)
Guy Ritchie (director)
Jesus Luz (model)

Spicoli, Vanilla Ice, Rodman and A-Rod? That has to be some kind of record.

Jose Canseco is another notch on Madonna’s pointy bra.

  2. stuart

    1st..

yeah arod is a better baseball player then a husband but really i care about his baseball playing and maybe the rest of the world should also.

the kc columnist whitlock destroyed selena Roberts read it…

  3. Don

    lol nice Pete

  4. JB

    Tupac????????????????

  5. E-gawa

5.2 innings is 5.2 innings.. that’s not good.. and 12K’s who cares? Not counting the 1st he threw 83 pitches.. 83 pitches to get 14 outs is a joke.. I don’t care how those outs are made.. that’s an average of almost 6 pitches per AB. That can’t happen for a starter.. A reliever.. Well that’s something else.

  6. RussW210

Because I don’t follow the pop world… TUPAC?!?!?!?!

  7. Bad Scooter

Of course Francessa would downplay Joba’s performance last night. Joba struggled in the 1st and was dominating thereafter. We’ve all seen great pitchers do the same thing. Francessa is mad because he had his whole Joba to the pen speech ready to go after the first inning and then had to put it away.

No joke, but I heard Francessa say a few weeks back “I hope Joba fails as a starter”. Those were his exact words. And he calls himself a Yankee fan? What a joke.

  8. RussW210

    I’m on your bandwagon E-gawa

  9. five iron from fenway

SJ – Better than that. He is one of the top 3 starters in the AL. I believe four of the five (or something like that) pitchers who had better ERAs were in the NL.

For some absurd reason I feel pretty good about this team. I know they look pathetic now, but some of that is Boston has gotten in their heads.

CC should at some point become CC.
    AJ can be dominant.
Joba – last night proves he IS THAT GOOD. He will have some stinkers and is not done learning but he is potential # 1.
Hughes – I hope we get the Detroit Hughes. Even against the Red Sox his velocity was up and his curve was nasty. The cutter gives him that added pitch. Can he bring the change up to average to show 3-5 times a game?
    Pettite – Will be steady.

Damon, Jeter, Tex, Arod, Matsui, Swisher, Cano, Molina, Cabrera (hopefully this Melky is here to stay) – if they can’t score runs there is no hope. Runs have been scored, but they need to be much more clutch.

The bullpen needs health and length from the starters. But, Mo, Bruney, Marte, Coke, Melancon, Robertson, Aceves should do the trick.

No one has run away and hid yet. Toronto will not be a playoff team. The central should beat up amongst themselves. The west is simply not that good. And, Tampa is still behind the Yankees.

I have said this for a while – watch TAMPA. They are the key. In my opinion the Sox make the playoffs. The only competition for the 4th playoff spot (west, and central not included) is Tampa and the Yankees.

  10. RussW210

We miss you ARod!!!! I can’t wait to see how many dingers he hits in Yankee Stadium Fairway.

Actually, all men are required to sleep with Madonna at some point. I’m dreading my turn.

BTW, either no pix of Madonna or only early ones. These days she’s just putrid.

  12. 55

You’re a baseball writer, not a gossip rag columnist. It’s not even like they were together.

I can’t believe I once thought you were better than this. You’re not.

  13. Francis

    I agree E-gawa.

  14. kei igawa's sunglasses

Pete your pathetic, seriously your a reporter and you right this junk and think its funny?

  15. Tex's friend (Best starting 5 in the majors)

Hughes’ numbers in the boston game suck, BUT he was getting really squeezed by the FLAT OUT AWFUL calling by that shrimp of an umpire. When the only strike you get is right down the middle, you are going to give up walks and homeruns. no way around it.

  16. Spyder

A-Rod can hit HRs to the empty seats!!!

  17. Bad Scooter

E-gawa – If you expect Joba and Hughes to spin complete games it’s not happening. These guys are on strict pitch counts. 6 or 7 innings is the most we can hope for. That’s why CC, AJ and Andy have to go 7+ consistently so the bullpen can 1) Get some rest and 2) Not pitch that much because they are horrid.

  18. John Twan

A-Rod can get any women in the world and he chose Madonna

    How Pathetic

  19. tampayank

Hopefully Cano gets going again, he hit Sonanstine well a few weeks ago, AROD back, let the circus begin, it should be fun:)

  20. JB

2008 average innings per start was 5.8.

    He’s averaging 5.65 a start now.

King Felix, similar power pitcher, first few years average 6.1 innings per start.

Last year was up to 6.45

    Josh Beckett

First Year full year 6.1 innings per start

Last year 6.4 innings per start

    A trend?????

Joba will probably do a bit better as we move along and get around 6 innings per start which is above the league average and along the same development lines as other power pitchers in their careers.

  21. Counts

    AJ better step up today

And the offense better hit Andy Sonenstein

  22. Tex's friend (Best starting 5 in the majors)

    CY sonnenstine? dios mio!!!

  23. 66 stripes

    Can A-Rod pitch in relief?

If not, he isin’t going to help much.

  24. roast beef

madonna is so weird! it’s so funny that she’s so weird!

  25. JB

And the whole point of last night, just like his game at Boston, he is learning how to pitch thru adversity or not having control or his best stuff right away. Many young pitchers would have been out after that first inning. Apparently we didn’t watch Kennedy and Hughes last year get rattled early and that was it, they needed to be taken out as it just kept spiraling.

  26. you gotta have faith (right porch giveth and the right porch taketh away)

“i dont care how many stike outs he had”

oh please if joba didnt turn it around after the 1st you’d be asking why isnt he the same, why doesnt he show emotion, where are all the strikeouts?

the joba to the bullpen believers will spin every start he has in their favor no matter what he does.

  27. Y26

Kay is drooling over Joba’s start yesterday….

  28. E-gawa

“E-gawa – If you expect Joba and Hughes to spin complete games it’s not happening. These guys are on strict pitch counts. 6 or 7 innings is the most we can hope for. Complete games? he went 5.2 innings last night.. he barely qualified for the game. It took him 108 pitches to get to that point.. 83 pitches not counting the 1st. I was more impressed with his 7 inning start where he went deep into the game and he threw 88 pitches that night!!

  29. Stop.

I look forward to Alex’s return.

Sorry if this is old news to you, but I just read it on Gawker… David Steele was a 44 year-old sports columnist for the Baltimore Sun who had a nice career until the paper laid him off last week….by calling him, on his cell phone, while he was in the press box at a Baltimore Orioles game, which his paper had assigned him to cover. Sucks. Two other Sun staffers at that game also got laid off. During the game.

  30. stuart

BTW the yanks lead baseball in attendance. they are averaging i think 47 k a game..

never know from the press. down from last years 50 K but smaller stadium and crazy prices….

they outdraw the kitty box by about 10 k a game……………….

  31. JB

And the difference last night, he faced a veteran quality lineup that takes pitches, the 7 innings game was against the free swinging Detroit Tigers. Hughes start against the Tigers looked different as well.

Red Sox are second in baseball in walks. Tigers are 20th in baseball.

  32. Fran

Good news that Alex is about ready to come back. He can replace Posda’s bat in the line-up. So instead of 3rd base being the weak position offensively, catcher will. Now if only Alex could pitch too.

  33. Cor Shep

I really hope he does come back on Friday cuz I’m going to the game!!!

  34. Terry from NH

If anyone fool on this board thinks that Arod won’t help then you are sadly, pathetically mistaken. There are “0″ HR’s from the 3B position this year.. ZERO!! This guy has the 3rd most HR the last 3 years and that is with missed time. And if you don’t think he will make Tex a better hitter well… I’m for Arod and stand by him.. Pete A. should support him as well, but he is a reporter, not a fan of the Yanks I guess.. Stupid posts with Madonna in it only fuel the fire against Arod.. Can’t wait too see him complete this lineup especially without Posada for a time.

  35. Bronx Jeers

It’s funny how that list starts off kind of on the b-list, peaks with Penn & Beatty and then sort of gets weird and falls off.

    Poor Arod at the bottom!

Sort of like when Torre put him in the 8 spot.

“Kay is drooling over Joba’s start yesterday….”

    and Mike Francesa is not.

  37. Trevor

“he faced a veteran quality lineup that takes pitches, the 7 innings game was against the free swinging Detroit Tigers”

Don’t downplay that start. Detroit has one of the better lineups in the AL. Also a patient lineup doesn’t always = great lineup. Take a look at the Yankees.

  38. ray (sox fan)

I am one Sox fan who is not quite ready to declare the Yankees dead.

Seems in recent years the Yankees always start out slow but then put it together as the season goes on.

I have no doubt that the Yankees will be a formidable opponent the rest of the season.

Arod and Wang will be back and that should make a considerable difference.

I know a lot of people downplay the importance of team chemistry but I think there is something to it. Maddon has emphasized it at Tampa and look at those results.

With all the new players on the Yankees it just might take some time for everything to gell and come together in my opinion.

  39. Bad Scooter

The attendance at the New Stadium should be a non-issue. Go back and look at the attendance at the old Stadium during the years they won the World Series in ‘96, ‘98, ‘99 and ‘00. The place wasn’t sold out every game, not even close. They only started getting 50K+ when it was announced a new stadium was being built and the old one was going to be no more. Some people have a short memory.

  40. Forntoso

Cashman better find another solution to the bullpen that doesn’t include Jobber….

  41. ZMAN7777

Pete — I have to agree that this post is simply insipid, and I normally have no problem with your jabs at A-Rod.

Now, Madonna does have strong arms. She’d probably be no worse than 80% of our relievers.

  42. William Buckner

I stepped out my door today and my deductive reasoning told me it was still spring. I checked my calendar and confirmed my suspicions.

I checked a web site today and found that although the Yankees had lost, they still were no where near outside contention.

I checked the box score to find that two of their best offensive players were hurt, as were an important starter, pen contributor, and outfielder. Web MD told me all five would likely be back before June 15th.

I know it’s tough to hear, even tougher to stomach, but the baseball team you watch today will likely not be the team you watch a month from now. But patience is your reward. Baseball is an extremely long season so there will be ebbs and flows.

It’s easy and enjoyable to vent and this is the perfect forum. I am still very confident things will turn around. And I am not an “all is well fan.”

Too much talent in the rotation, once healed enough talent in the 1 through 9, and I think that there are a few valuable pieces in the pen. Ideally 2 more pen guys emerge either through improved performance, promotion, or trade.

  43. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble!

    What is she wearing? Yikes

  44. beefy

    Don’t forget JFK jr.!

Truth be told, Madonna was HOT during the 90’s and most men would’ve given their left nut to sleep with her. Today? Not so much, but at least one would be living out a childhood fantasy.

  45. JB

Trevor, not downplaying the start, just addressing the complaints about innings pitched. If the counts didn’t run as long last night with pitches getting fouled off or longer atbats he would have gone deeper. Obviously 12 ks you probably aren’t throwing 3 pitches to each batter. He got quite a few big ks on 3-2 counts. Just addressing the fact that I think he has been very good as a starter and will continue to go deeper into games. Hughes’s start against the Tigers was better, mostly due to control, but a guy like Miguel Cabrera is more apt to go outside the zone than Pedroia or some of those other guys will.

  46. Bad Scooter

“Complete games? he went 5.2 innings last night.. he barely qualified for the game. It took him 108 pitches to get to that point.. 83 pitches not counting the 1st. I was more impressed with his 7 inning start where he went deep into the game and he threw 88 pitches that night!!”

Like I said, if you expect Joba, or any pitcher for that matter, to consistemtly breeze through 7 innings at 88 pitches it’s not going to happen often. Your expectations are too high, lower them a little and you’ll be alright.

  47. daniel

Pete please no more of this tabloid garbage, stick to what you know baseball, the blog is much better when you give facts and not your opinions.

  48. E-gawa

“Like I said, if you expect Joba, or any pitcher for that matter, to consistemtly breeze through 7 innings at 88 pitches it’s not going to happen often. Your expectations are too high, lower them a little and you’ll be alright.”

I expect starters to go at least 6, if not more. That’s not expecting a whole lot.. That’s what you’re supposed to get out of starters. 5 innings is not acceptable. It’s a bad start regardless of what happens.

  49. KO

Tupac dated Madonna…. that is crazy…. Pretty classy by the Baltimore Sun by the way, if they actually called during the game he was assigned to cover that is absolutely ridiculous and very unprofessional in my opinion

  50. Cliff

Pete, is it possible for an Arod post without a joke about his personal life? Just once maybe?

  51. Kevin

Just a guess, but tubby ole Pete wouldn’t pass up an opportunity with Madonna, or for that matter anyone else who A-Rod has dated.

  52. saucY

    Bronx Jeers,
You think the list peaks with Warren Beatty?

i remember when Dick Tracy came out wondering who Warren Beatty was.

I think that was the last I heard his name until today…

Never knew she was with that bisquick artist…

  53. Les Deux

I have to agree, this was pretty dopey.

  54. Rockin' Rich

    Pete;

give Madge a jingle. I think you’ve got a shot!

  55. saucY

“Costume Institute Gala at the Met”

it is kind of odd that we’re mocking her wardrobe choice at an event called the Costume Institute Gala…

i think everyone there looked like a freak.

  56. Sean Serritella

I’m sorry Pete but Madonna dated more men than that.

  57. Felix

I Can’t believe you left Mark Messier off the list

    And where’s Canseco….
