Yankees resort to Legends seat upgrades

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 07, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Check out this note from a reader who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of reprisal from the Yankees:

My family has 4 seats in the most expensive seats that are separate from the moat (the ones that cost $325), and they are great seats. Our 4 seats became 6 last week when the Yankees made the changes to their ticket policies and gave us 2 complimentary seats 4 rows back from our usual seats for the rest of the year.

On the way to the game Monday vs. the Sox we got a call from the Yankees. They were moving us to the Legends seats, and not just any Legend seats. These seats were 5 rows back, directly behind home plate … ones that either go for $850 or $2,500, I’m not sure. And they put all 6 of us that were going together in one row.

When we picked up the seats at the stadium there were tons of other envelopes of people who got upgraded for free. This is how desperate they are … even when Boston is in town they have to give out complimentary upgrades to get butts in those seats.

They need to just admit they made a mistake and do something (else) about it!

Good for the Yankees for moving fans closer. If they have those seats available, they might as well put somebody in them. Meanwhile, are they upgrading somebody else into those now-vacant $325 seats?

These cannot be good times for the people who work in ticket operations for the team. It’s quite a mess.

    Manny suspended for juice

  3. Meryl May 7th, 2009 at 11:52 am

This is interesting to say the very least. So are they just going to keep upgrading everyone up a ticket level and then are going to have the Grandstand completely empty eventually?

  4. UnKnown May 7th, 2009 at 11:52 am

    Take that MANNY.

  5. Coach6423 May 7th, 2009 at 11:53 am

    Manny Suspended…

  6. leblanc May 7th, 2009 at 11:53 am

Yeah Manny juiced but I feel him getting a pass already. Just a fun lovable guy that Manny.

  7. UnKnown May 7th, 2009 at 11:53 am

Guess it is good he is not a Yankee now, Huh? All you lovers of Manny. That would have been a stupid move to pick up that loose cannon.

Tell every red sox fan to eat a d!ck when you hear them chant a-roid. I bet u big papi was on the juice too, hence the phsical breakdown and horrible performance (against the yankees, of course) this year.

Will Ortiz ever be caught? I wonder.

  11. pat May 7th, 2009 at 11:54 am

The Post today said Hal was in NY this week. This sounds like a hotel move that has his fingerprints on it.

  12. Stop. May 7th, 2009 at 11:55 am

Finally – a Yankee story that makes me happy. Thanks for sharing.

  13. pat May 7th, 2009 at 11:55 am

Don’t take too much joy in Manny’s foibles. The Yankees have enough of their own issues to deal with.

  14. Coach6423 May 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am

All the news suddenly isnt about arod..

  15. bdog375 May 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am

Crickets from the people who thought the Yankees should have signed Manny, huh?

  16. Jordan May 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am

I can’t believe this. Manny cannot be that dumb, to take steroids now. There has to be some kind of explanation because no person can be stupid enough to do this anymore.

  17. m May 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am

    Manny being Manny (?)

  18. Coach6423 May 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am

    Just Manny being Manny

  19. bodhisattva May 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am

Well, gee, when it comes out that Pujols is juicing, too, we’re going to have a little different sense of the landscape in Major League Baseball.

Red Sox titles “tainted”? Of course not. Manny must have started using AFTER he left Boston.

  20. BoogieDown May 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am

I bet the Red Sox of ’04 had a major, currently unreported PED culture. It wouldn’t surprise be in the least if David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez are revealed as users in the future.

  21. Sean Serritella May 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am

Wow! Manny and steroids! I knew he was juicing!

  22. Bob(The Original) May 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am

Crazy that these guys still risk getting caught.

    HAve fun with that Torre!

  23. Jeff NJ May 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am

Too bad the Manny suspension didn’t happen while he was with the sox. Poor Joe Torre.

  24. JWEAV May 7th, 2009 at 11:58 am

    Canseco was right again.

  25. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 11:58 am

    I got the same offer.

Its really tough to change ticket policies (ie: refunds) during the season.

About the only thing they can do in season are these types of things.

Where the rubber will meet the road is going to be in the off-season.

Do they re-evaluate, lower prices across the board (not just for the folks in the “moat”) and make it a more balanced pricing policy?

Or, do they continue to live in denial and try and keep putting a square peg in a round hole?

  26. Guy Incognito May 7th, 2009 at 11:58 am

Boy, glad the Yankees didn’t listen to the “GET MAAAAANNY” crowd last season.

  27. Stan May 7th, 2009 at 11:58 am

It was probably just a GNC product like JC Romero/Sergio Mitre

Unless it is steroids, it is not a big deal.

  28. bdog375 May 7th, 2009 at 11:59 am

They just need to release the other 103 names already.

  29. bodhisattva May 7th, 2009 at 11:59 am

It’ll be interesting when the entire league gets suspended.

    Canseco was right again.
    ===========
Canseco’s a dope. And these people castigating ARod are hypocrites, because they ALL know that virtually everybody uses some form of PEDs. Give me a break. As if we didn’t know this.

I’ll go on record: I COULDN’T CARE LESS. They ALL use.

  36. wood is good May 7th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

How can there be anyone with half a brain out there wondering why Big Floppi isn’t his usual bangin’ self this year?

  37. Jordan May 7th, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Manny’s claiming it’s a prescription. And if so, that’s absolute crap if he’s suspended. He claims to have asked a doctor if it would be okay and was told it would be and Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times and Gammons are reporting it’s not a steroid or PED, just a prescription that triggered a positive test.

Aren’t you supposed to be able to trust a doctor? 50 games for being screwed over is not okay. Baseball has to make distinctions between steroids and prescribed medication from a doctor.

  38. redsoxcheating May 7th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Those cheaters! We demand the rings back!@ 04 and 07!

  39. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble! May 7th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue, according to a source familiar with matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

    ====================================

    what a mess

  40. Weather Man May 7th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Funny how this only comes out when he is a Dodger and we didn’t here this when he was with Boston.

As usual, MLB is trying to protect the Red Sox

  41. Rishi May 7th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

when did he start this “prescription” and when was the test…so many questions…

personally, I don’t care – but if people can write books and make money off an old test, shouldn’t the same attention be given to a current positive test?

  42. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Let’s see if ESPN shuts down programming, as they did with Arod’s positive test, for this one.

Brandon posted in the other thread about Jorge Vasquez and folks answered, “well, he’s 27. Its not a big deal”.

That’s the problem with today’s Yankee fans. Nothing is ever good enough.

The Eastern League is a very difficult league to hit in because its predominantly a pitchers league and balls don’t carry in most of the ballparks.

The guy is hitting BOMBS right now. I don’t care how old he is. Its a pitchers league and he is having success.

I talked to a scout who saw a few of their games and he thinks the guy is 150 AB’s away from being ML ready.

He’s strictly a DH type or bat off the bench guy. He’s not a frontline player. Isn’t that what this team needs?

So, I ask you, in the second half of the year, who would you rather have on the bench, Brett Gardner, Angel Berroa or Jorge Vasquez?

Alfredo Aceves looks like he can be a guy that can help this team in some form. They got him in the Mexican League and last year at this time he was in A Ball.

If this guy can help off the bench down the line, why is that a bad thing?

  43. Paul from Cali May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

How can they suspend Manny? He’s not a Yankee.

  44. Brandon "We are all going to meet Berroa under the Oneill banner" "I LOVE ME SOME ME !" May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

I’m telling you guys there will be names there that will shock you. This isn’t one of them.

  45. Rishi May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

    Dylan Hernandez live on ESPN

  46. Sandman May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

It’s good that the Yankees are trying to address the vacant seats issue, but I’m not sure they are trying hard enough. Still plenty of empty seats out there.

How is it possible that a Yankees – Sox game isn’t sold out? Other than bad management, that is.

  47. ANSKY May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

    Hey Selena Roberts:

Why don’t you go after Manny now and see how far back in his career you can find that he juiced? Why don’t you ask him or your pal Jose about former teammates of Manny’s who were on ‘the list’ or juiced and got away with it?

  48. Frank May 7th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Why do I feel that the outrage in the media will not be the same for this as it was for ARod? Why do I feel that people will not claim the Red Sox WS titles are tainted like they have done so with the Yankees?

  49. Rishi May 7th, 2009 at 12:06 pm

is hernandez writing a book? movie of the week?

    “Reprisal” from the Yankees.

I wonder how far the Yankees would actually go. Would they blow him up in his car, or just rough him up a bit?

  52. Guy Incognito May 7th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

After taking hit after hit because of it coming out that a ton of Yankees used PEDs, and having to hear it from countless holier-than-thou Red Sox fans, I want that home clubhouse wall in Fenway to come crashing down on RSN.

Totally suspect: Ortiz, Manny (guilty), Foulke, Timlin, Nomar (guilty), Mueller, Millar, Kapler, Nixon.

  53. Andrew May 7th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

Wait so Peter Gammons has ALREADY diffused this situation so the Red Sox don’t have to deal with the headache of “Manny was on ‘roids, who else was using during the 2000s” allegations? Wow, he really works fast running that spin machine.

  54. leblanc May 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Of course Gammons would know precisely what it is…

  55. Tom in N.J. May 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Both Vasquez and Miranda should be up here on the bench- once Matsui proves he can play a little OF.

  56. Roger(the new amsterdam yankees ) May 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

probobly a stupid question but why is manny being suspended and arod isn’?

  57. Rishi May 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

  58. Brandon "We are all going to meet Berroa under the Oneill banner" "I LOVE ME SOME ME !" May 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

SJ he’s hitting 450 ft plus shots in AA Trenton. SJ what did the scout say about his patience I notice .333 OBP % overall but .538 OBP w/ RISP.

  59. Rishi May 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

take that Joe Torre! just kidding :)

  60. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Players are responsible for what goes into their bodies.

Its part of the problem with the current testing program.

If you get perscribed something, and it triggers a positive test, you get nailed.

Is it fair? Of course not. However, its fans and media that scream GET THESE CHEATERS OUT OF HERE that put bad programs into place.

If Manny, like JC Romero and Mitre, got burned by a bad labeled perscription or a doctor that didn’t study MLB’s list of banned substances, at least the way the rules are currently written, that’s on Manny.

Not fair but, that’s the way it is.

  61. Bronx Jeers May 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

    Now I want an upgrade.

I spent twice what it cost me last season for worse seats.

The problem is that the tier is already full.

Upgrade me to the bleachers! I’ll take it.

  62. Eric May 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Gardner at .280 OBP > Melky with a .380 OBP

Gardner has speed on the basepaths and makes things happen. He is a sparkplug and if he hit 1\2 as much as Melky, he will be more valuable because of his speed

  63. Trevor May 7th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Canseco not too long ago suspected he was a PEDs user. I don’t like Canseco but he’s yet to be wrong.

    Manny….

  65. five iron from fenway May 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Where the H is George Mitchell!
I thought the Red Sox were completely clean. David Ortiz will be outed at some point, in my mind that is 100%.
Any one have an idea when the test was – had to be recent.

  66. Betsy May 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Wow, Manny – but of course it looks like it’s not PEDS.

What the Yankees have now isn’t working, so if it means bringing Vasquez up here, do it. He very likely won’t be that good, but you never know – it’s better than the Yankees sitting on their hands. I love Cash, but I’m gradually losing faith in him. It’s not fair that he’s tying his manager’s hands with this terrible bench and it’s not fair to the team.

  67. rodg12 May 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Wow. Sorta happy a Red Sox player was finally tied to PEDs but also sad. Manny is one heck of a hitter. PEDs/No PEDs. I defended ARod and showed how the evidence does not show how big of a ‘performance enhancer’ these drugs are. I will do the same for Manny. Still a HOFer in my book and one of the best hitters I’ve ever seen.

  68. 56Bomber May 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

I’m still waiting for my call to tell me I’m back in the Saturday game plan.

  69. leblanc May 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

How are prescriptions from doctors PED’s???

  70. Betsy May 7th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

Oh yeah, and the media’s going to lay off of Alex now? I don’t think so. Manny will get the sympathy vote – no doubt about it – because people like him.

  71. Tex's friend (Best starting 5 in the majors) May 7th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

manny being manny, at home watching the dodgers on tv.

  72. Thomas May 7th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

    hahahaha Mannnnnyyyyyyy!

  73. five iron from fenway May 7th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Roger – Arod is not suspended because he didn’t test positive after the drug policy was in effect. Technically, the results of the test that Arod was positive for was confidential and it was illegal that it was released.
Manny obviously tested positively recently which is a 50 game under the current rule.

  74. Tex's friend (Best starting 5 in the majors) May 7th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

I still dont care, but at least now it isnt just a-rod anymore and it’s a former red sox.

But again, to test positive after testing is just stupid.

  75. Danny May 7th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

When we have Gardner-Melky-Pena-Molina are due up and all you have on the bench is Cervelli and Berroa… then you have a problem.

Atleast bring up one of the AAA mashers

  76. ANSKY May 7th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Before I get too far ahead of myself, I want to see what it was that Manny tested positive for. Of course it could be a prescription. Let’s see.

Being that nothing would surprise me anymore, it wouldn’t be a surprise either way for Manny or MANY others.

Then again, I forgot for a few minutes that I don’t care anymore after all the PED news saturation of the last couple years. OK, Manny took something. Could have been steroids, could have been Sudafed. Yawn. Back to work.

  77. Frank May 7th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

    BREAKING NEWS:

“In a shocking use of the “Best Interest of Baseball” clause, Commissioner Bud Selig has overturned the 50 game suspenssion of Manny Ramirez for testing positive for performancing enhancing drugs. “I just want to be perfectly clear,” stated Selig, “if the Mitchell Report has proved one thing, it’s that the steroid culture in baseball exist exclusively in New York clubhouses. This test must be a false positive.” Selig went on to say that he would however put an asterisk next to the Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series title. “Of course they deserve an asterisk, that was the greatest team of all time. They played the game right and they played the game clean. They were only exceeded by the 2007 Red Sox, who played the game even better thanks to Josh Beckett”"

    :-)

  78. frank from chatham May 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

I went to the game last night – section 128 (field).

I tried to go down to the field to get a closer look and because the moat is directly in front of section 128, the security guard said “no dice!” Yankee policy allows those whose sections extend all the way to the field to go down to the wall but I was not allowed to enter another section near mine to get there. I’m retired – imagine if I had my grandson with me.

They have to rethink this moat and some rules which are not children friendly.

  79. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

    Brandon,

He tends to open up a bit on breaking balls and they are trying to keep him closed off more so he can stay as short and quick to the ball as he does when he swings at fastballs.

He has very good bat speed and pitch recognition.

Evidently, he’s also a pretty nice guy and enjoys the camardarie of being around younger players. That helps his acclaimation process.

He’s got a nearly ready major league bat. Just gotta clean up a few things and he may be an option off the bench for them later in the year.

I now understand why Cashman was excited when Pete asked about him the other day.

  80. pat May 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

People always say would you feel sad and sorry for a player who wasn’t a Yankee that got busted and I always said yes.

Now I know for sure I wasn’t lying.

  81. Brandon "We are all going to meet Berroa under the Oneill banner" "I LOVE ME SOME ME !" May 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

There’s nothing funny about another name especially Manny being on that list. Sad they should just release the names and stop letting it trickle at this point I don’t even trust Jetes. That’s my honest opinion.

  82. Trevor May 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Patiently waiting for Ortiz and Veritek name to appear somewhere…

  83. MAN-ROID May 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

    MAN-ROID!!!!

next to go down, ortiz, though that might be tougher since his lack of production the last few years probably means he stopped using.

  84. Aardvark May 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

A-Rod used steroids, Manny used some doctor prescribed banned substance, like JC Romero did.

Why should Manny get the same scrutiny as A-Rod? One did it with the intent to cheat, the other did it by accident or because he is stupid.

  85. G. Love May 7th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

The Boston media and ESPN will protect the Red Sox as long as they can. That won’t be forever.

What will have to happen for the truth to come out about their roided out 2004 team is Gammons needs to go to his reward in the sky and a player from that team needs to blow the whistle in a money grabbing book opportunity.

The Red Sox organization pisses a lot of ex players off and sooner or later some player from that era is going to come out swinging.

I’m not at all surprised Gammons jumped to Manny’s defense this quickly. He knows what a positive test for Manny means to the Red Sox even when Manny is a Dodger.

Gammons will put behind his petty feelings for Manny and defend him to the death because in his mind he’s defending the Red Sox.

    It’s all transparent and sad.

  86. Brandon "We are all going to meet Berroa under the Oneill banner" "I LOVE ME SOME ME !" May 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Thanks for that info, yeh I was saying since the WBC and before that, every one I spoke to told me his bat = legit. In Mexico he is thier Pujols I hope he stops flying open on breaking balls too, he does that he is going to be dangerous in the majors, maybe Edgar Martinez like.

  87. Disappointed May 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

    SAY IT AINT SO MANNY!!

  88. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

    God Eric, watch the games.

    A guy with a .280 OBP and no power isn’t a “sparkplug”.

Geez, he barely got the bunt down last night and bunted to the wrong side of the field.

Just stop now before you embarrass yourself any further.

Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon have been the best two players on the team for the last 2 1/2 weeks.

Now, you want to sit one of them for one of the most disappointing players on the team.

Ugh. Its painful in here at times.

  89. pc69 May 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Nice move by the Yankees. This organization has become an embarrassment at the behest of their greed. They have completely dismissed the baseball fan in favor of the same chardonnay club that rots many sports stadiums across the country. But, because of the tradition associated with the Yankees, this gross misconduct is magnified on a national level every night on ESPN.

Trost, Levine, Bros. Stein et al should continually be villified until there is a complete omission that they let greed take the reins. At that point, they need to bring the best part of Yankee stadium back into the fold – the baseball fan.

Add this to the season performance and it makes you wonder if it could get any worse – well almost, imagine if they would have signed Manny – that would be Giambi, ARod, and Manny all associated with the Yankees. I can see the headlines now, “Yankees prefer PED’s to baseball players”. Cue in picture of the Death Star with a line of “stormtroopers” lined up to get their money and PED’s.

  90. pat May 7th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

“Canseco not too long ago suspected he was a PEDs user. I don’t like Canseco but he’s yet to be wrong.”

Canseco never mentioned Manny before but does after he fails a test but before it was announced. Too much of a coincidence for me.

Serious question – No question Varitek, Ortiz, Nixon. How about Beckett and/or Papelbon. What about pitchers? We don’t seem to get quite enough speculation about the top pitchers.

  92. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes May 7th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

The odds are that if we are hearing about it now, he recently tested positive. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be getting suspended, similar to A-Rod.

Any of you who WANT guys to test positive are insane. This is not healthy for baseball.

As much as I detested him in Boston, I had hoped that Manny would be one of the clean, great hitters…we needed that to help us climb out of this hole.

Now, its lookin like Pujols only.

  93. RussW210 May 7th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

We don’t work for them. After reading about the security staff during that rain delay this week, this organization has a lot to learn about customer service. That customer that emailed Pete is paying hundreds of $ per ticket per game. Why does he have to live in fear? Ridiculous. You could win 26 World Championships and have 39 pennants but if they keep up these practices, they won’t be able to give any tickets away and YES will have to digitally insert people in the seats.

  104. Andrew May 7th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Undoubtedly this will quickly become a non-story, as long as it’s Peter Gammons getting the inside information from Scott Boras re: Manny’s flunking the test. Because those are two extremely reliable people with no motives to spin anything.

  105. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I blame all of this on Selig. He is so fawning to his buddies in the media, he can’t let this issue die.

They put together a rushed, filled with holes program, and that makes this issue frontburner all the time.

    The man is so incompetent.

    GLove,

Its only a matter of time before two things happen:

    1. The other 103 names come out.
    2. Some intrepid reporter gets somebody to spill about other players and teams and the whole thing is opened up again.

One of the most interesting things about Selena Roberts book on Arod is that many of the media elite are rejecting it.

Even guys that have written very critical stories on Arod see it as overkill and filled with holes.

    Why is that relevent?

Once Arod stops being the Sports Media of America’s favorite whipping boy, they will go searching for another guy. That’s how these folks roll.

Its only a matter of time before somebody else gets in the line of fire.

When that happens, all hell will break loose in the game.

Selig could have prevented all of this if he didn’t commission the Mitchell Report.

He was more concerned about his reputation and legacy than he was with the game. Now, he is paying the price.

  106. Billy May 7th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

The bench is just awful and GGBG is no spark right now. There are plenty of options at SWB. Not saying they will be world beaters but it’s options.

Linden can play center field just like Gardy and he is mashing. Linden has three more RBIs today and he’s hitting .352.

Yeah, King Manny. Ain’t he great. Ain’t he the best? Ain’t he a great big idiot!

And just think – he could have been ours. So we could have had another player lost to us. For 50 games. But in the most embarrassing way of all.

So now there is no question in my mind that “the greatest right fielder in the game” has been juicing right along.

As a sidenote, how flippin stupid do you have to be to continue to do it with all that has gone on. He TRULY is dumb.

And it goes a long way to explain whacking out Youklis (something that I’m still okay with :) ) and pushing down the 70 year old ticket agent. ROID RAGE!)

  121. ANSKY May 7th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

PED’s weren’t a NY-specific issue until Giambi’s ethereal apology and then the Mitchell report.

Soon it’ll sound like a Sox – Yanks issue because Manny tested positive for who-knows-what as a Dodger.

It appears to me at a glance (w/o looking at any lists or rosters) that Texas and Oakland had a lot of players on their teams who were juicing when they were there.

You can be pretty much guaranteed that ‘List of 104′ is not the extent of the users. I’d be very surprised if ANY major league baseball clubhouse didn’t have at least a couple guys ‘using’ when they were in that clubhouse. Time frame ranging from the late 80′s until a couple years ago. Not for the whole time frame, but I’m assuming at some point there was someone using in every clubhouse.

Point being, I would expect that no team was totally clean if it ever gets fully revealed.

The Sox fan base can go on believing every single guy who juiced before they came to NY continued to juice in NY (before calling me a hypocrite, read my previous sentence) and that Canseco suddenly stopped juicing when he played in Boston and never got any of their guys involved.

  122. Tom B May 7th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

some of you are not even attempting to read the articles associated with the manny thing.

his name didn’t come off the list of 103. the names aren’t trickling out this has nothing to do with it.
he failed one of the random PED tests, likely this season.
this will not cause any other names to come out at all.
a-rod didn’t fail one of these tests, or he would have been suspended. he failed the prelim “we want to know how bad it is” test in 03.

and eric… gardners speed only helps when he is ON BASE. get a clue…

“Will Ortiz ever be caught? I wonder.”

One of the biggest “potential tip offs” about Ortiz, besides the obvious evidence of him becoming HR king after he came to Boston, from very humble stats in Minny, – to me, anyway – was last season when there was a report that someone who either worked in or frequented the Mets clubhouse (not Radomski) was being investigated for selling steroids to players. Well amongst the players he supposedly was friendly with was Ortiz.

The day after the news broke, Ortiz gave a comment to the press saying that now he had to wonder if could have accidentally gotten a banned substance in one of the vitamins he used to take, or shakes he used to drink, and he just didn’t know it.

If I can find the article, I will link to it.

We know his name wasn’t on the list and we know he was suspended for something he took.

    It was a banned substance.

Rick DeMott once lost an Olympic Gold Medal for flunking a drug test after he took his asthma mediciation.

Bottom line though is, this is a major story.

Mainly because, regardless of the Gammons spin, it opens up the PED use issue in the game again.

That’s a problem. Especially if more names that were on that list begin to trickle out.

If that happens, once again, the baseball is interrupted with this stuff.

    That’s not good for anybody.

  140. Trevor May 7th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

Everyone just needs to come to grips that it’s possible that ANY player has juiced or is juiced, that way when junk like this comes out in the future (and it will, at least 102 more times) then it will just roll off your back. It just sucks that every time a name comes out, more fans will turn away from baseball (although there is most likely no sport to really turn to)

Hang on a second. The report does NOT say it was steroids. It said it was a medication banned under their policy.

Don’t assume it is steroids yet.

IMHO, I think the game and the sports industry needs to look at HGH as being perhaps an advancement in medicine if it is being used to heal injuries quicker. Of course, anything can be abused in larger doses, so regulation is needed. But if it is HGH that Manny is accused of, I personally would categorize as I would have with Andy Pettitte: trying to come back from an injury quicker.

Manny DID say he passed 15 drug tests. Let’s see how it plays out.

I bet the Red Sox of ‘04 had a major, currently unreported PED culture. It wouldn’t surprise be in the least if David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez are revealed as users in the future.

Totally agreed, great point… But the Red Sox as always will get a pass….

  158. aardvark May 7th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

I read Canseco’s book. Drugs have been a part of professional sports culture for a long, long time. Back in 1969 Jim Bouton wrote that if you gave a pitcher a pill that would take years off his life but would guarantee 20 wins, he’d take it. Little evidence that mentality has changed. PEDs more widespread than anyone is willing to admit (except Canseco, who was drummed out of baseball for saying it). But it’s ridiculous to assert that one team had an advantage over another because of it. I didn’t see Mark McGuire or Sammy Sosa leading their teams to championships.

Not true. This will be spun that A-Rod cheated but Manny was just negligent in what he put in his body.

  175. aardvark May 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Lot of paranoia about the Red Sox on this site. It reminds me of Sarah Palin whining about the Liberal Media.

  176. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble! May 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

“Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was okay to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say
anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.

“I want to apologize to Mr. McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, Mr. Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I’m sorry about this whole situation.” – Manny Ramirez

  177. Trevor May 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

I’ve come to the sad conclusion that 98% of these players are doing something. Whether it’s aphedemines (sp), HGH, Steroids or whatever. No one seems to be clean.
I actually don’t mind greenies. Theses players have to play 162 games and travel. Not a big deal if they need a pick me up.
But the other stuff is just unfortunate.

    “leave Jeter out of that.

I think most of us would be surprised.”

    Why ?

No not really, not in this era.

  179. Boston Dave (in Berkeley, CA) May 7th, 2009 at 12:44 pm

“A lot of hypocrisy here today.

Lots of you guys who bashed Selena Roberts(which I agree with) are doing the same thing she did.”

    ———–

    not exactly.

For me personally, there is some relief because I want this issue to be seen as a league-wide issue.

Stop trying to pin the blame on a select # of individuals as MLB management has done.

Improve testing so it doesn’t happen again. For those that used PED’s when MLB had it’s back turned, I say let it slide and move on.

  180. jennifer May 7th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

SO it is okay for Manny not to answer questions. Meanwhile Alex had to go in front of a firing squad. I want a sit down with Manny like Alex’s. Not some bogus statement written by his reps.

  181. JB May 7th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

It’s not good for baseball, but another showing of how no one can really get away with innocence or claim they didn’t see or hear anything?

Those that wanted Manny, that would have been fantastic.

And Cashman would have been killed again for doing it, even by those that wanted Manny

  182. gayle May 7th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Wow who would you rather NOT be right now Manny Ramirez OR the Doctor that prescribed the medicine.

The vultures will descend on him right now.

  183. TL May 7th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

If this were Arod, Pete would have had mutliple blog updates and a 500-word story for the newpspaper.

  184. saucY May 7th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

    2004* 2007*

    is that fair?

i’m on the fence of whether or not to actually be happy about this.

at the very least, maybe it’ll dilute some of the attention alex gets with regards to the issue.

  185. Jeter's Edge (remove the dang net!) May 7th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Don’t be a fool people. The article says “Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue.” Just because he is using that as an excuse doesn’t mean he didn’t take PED’s. He going to blame it on whatever he can. Manny & Ortiz both juiced during 2004 and i hope both their names come out on that list. It’s time for someone else to be murdered by the media besides A-rod.

  186. SJ44 May 7th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

This certainly isn’t a good day for the Yankees and its a very bad day for baseball.

I take no delight in the issues of others. I don’t really see the glee in this.

It takes NOTHING away from 2004. NOTHING.

Once some of you realize that, you will be better off.

All in all, this is just another rotten day for baseball.

There is no good news in any of this stuff.

  187. Boston Dave (in Berkeley, CA) May 7th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

“And Cashman would have been killed again for doing it, even by those that wanted Manny”

People are so quick in here to say “I told you we should have signed Manny” or “I told you we needed Santana”

but they never seem to write “man, I was so wrong about that one”

  188. Billy May 7th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

“SO it is okay for Manny not to answer questions. Meanwhile Alex had to go in front of a firing squad. I want a sit down with Manny like Alex’s. Not some bogus statement written by his reps.”

Not taking sides but when it was first revealed, Arod had no comment at the gym. He had time to prepare for his big media statement.

  189. Brandon "We are all going to meet Berroa under the Oneill banner" "I LOVE ME SOME ME !" May 7th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

    Well said SJ

  190. Evan May 7th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

$325 is still a lot of money to sit in those seats but a lot more reasonably priced.

    Amen SJ44.

  192. Vader May 7th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Boy…all they had to do was give Jose a job in MLB and all of this stuff would have been swept under the rug and may have never come out.

    who’s next?

    teixeira?

    joba?

  195. m May 7th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

What an odd response from Manny. He’s taking this lying down. No anger, indignation toward the doctor.

He’s right, of course, this is his responsibilty. But we’re talking $7.7M.

Hopefully, he’s not dying or anything. No personal problem’s worth that kind of money.

Does the MLB have a compliance office? The NFL has a list of stuff that is approved, from vitamins to supplements. It’s like a “no excuse” list.

John Ireland said that this is a really big deal for LA. This news knocked the Lakers and game 2 activities to the side.

  196. saucY May 7th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

“It takes NOTHING away from 2004. NOTHING.”

i agree. but when i hear people say 96,98,99, and 2000 were tainted championships, your damn right i’ll respond by saying the same about 2004 and 2007.

  197. Reasonable Fan May 7th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

    Cliff May 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

    Reasonable Fan,

Does it matter if it was steroids or not? He tested positive for a banned PED and that is all there is too it!

    ———–

Well, look, I have my own opinions about certain rules in baseball and in the world. Yes, those are the rules as they stand now. But what if it WAS the sort of thing like the case brought up earlier in the thread with the medal-winning-Olympian flunking a drug test because of his asthma inhaler?

You can shake your finger and point to specific medications that are banned and say, yeah, he broke the rules. But in the court of public opinion, I think it’s important to differentiate between the banned substance of steroids and things that are not. Just as I would differentiate between steroids and HGH.

  198. Laura - There's nothing you have that I need, I can breathe! May 7th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

If you guys are waiting for Manny to receive the same ultra psychotic treatment Alex received, don’t hold your breath. Manny is already using the excuse “the doctor gave it to me”. In ESPN’s eyes, that will get him off of their hook.

To his credit though, Manny isn’t appealing the suspension so he is taking responsibility for his actions. I hate doing so, but I have to give him credit for that.

  199. Boston Dave (in Berkeley, CA) May 7th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

time to stop singling out the Yankees. No team is exempt.

or he is waiving his appeal because he’s afraid of how ugly it would get if the real details come out.

“All in all, this is just another rotten day for baseball.

that’s the way i look at it too .
i liked manny the baseball player.

it is an interesting question though why that the red sox have had zero problems with anyone on their team being associated with PEDS while with the red sox.

  203. Boston Dave (in Berkeley, CA) May 7th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Bill Plaschke is ripping Manny right now.

He is laughing at Manny’s Dr. excuse.

It’s funny these people get 2 extra tickets for the rest of the year, plus they even upgraded them and they still are not happy…Fans need to be happy they are getting upograded instead of complaining about anything…who cares if they admit they made a mistake…WHO CARES…..

  206. kevin May 7th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

    CALLING IT RIGHT NOW!
he got suspended for his script for medicinal marijuana!!!!!! HAHAHAHAH

“from a friend in the Sox clubhouse, most of the Sox would have liked to smack Youkilis themselves”

    :D

Of course I will now wonder about 2004 and 2007, just the way other people wonder about the years that Clemens graced the field for the Yankees.

Who wouldn’t? Well whether you do or not is fine. I do.

  208. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day photos May 7th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

50 games is a hell of a lot of games.

Is 50 games the automatic for any banned substance, do we know?

  209. GreenBeret7 May 7th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Steroids and HGH are 50 games. amphetemines and everything else is 25 games.

  210. rconn23 May 7th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

This is Manny we’re talking about.

He could have mistakenly chugged a bottle of Windex and one of the chemicals contained within could just happen to be on the banned substance list.

  211. rconn23 May 7th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    Seriously. Enough about this garbage.

    Yankees have a game tonight.

  212. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day photos May 7th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

    Thanks GB

  213. E May 7th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Does anyone know if the Yankees are doing anything for those who purchased the expensive single game seats? Thanks.

  214. jake May 7th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Not living anywhere near NYC anymore, I rarely get a chance to get to Yankees games. But I seriously doubt I’d even bother when I do get the chance.
The ticket prices at the new stadium are obscene. Obscene. Even if the economy were strong right now, the ticket prices would be obscene. And the obvious obscenity of the ticket prices is reflected in the judgment of the public: by definition, “obscene” means “no redeeming social value.” At $250, or $350, or more, per ticket, a seat at Yankees’ stadium has no socially redeeming value, especially when you consider that, at that price, you’re much more likely to get a better view of the game from your living room couch. After all, while Yankees’ ticket prices have gone through the proverbial roof, prices of 40″ LCD TVs get lower all the time.
And then, there’s the little matter of the quality of the entertainment being provided. The season is still young, and all, but the majority of Yankees’ games has stunk. Blowout wins and blowout losses, or games just so poorly played that they’ve been painful, nor at all enjoyable, for fans to watch.
The new stadium, so far, is looking like numerous other Yankees’ investments over the years: Kevin Brown, Kei Igawa, Jorge Posada, A-Rod, etc.
    Stupid is as stupid does.

  215. Sad Yankee Fan May 7th, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Yankee Stadium has bad Karma and this season will be a disaster. Greedy Stadium, Gordon Getco Stadium, Empty Stadium, whatever you want to call it.

  216. Marie May 8th, 2009 at 12:35 am

who would even want an upgrade right now? now we can be inches from the field to see them roll over and look lifeless.

i have season seats in the bleachers where at least i can pretend i can’t see what’s going on. when i go that is.
