    Good for him

  2. DonnieBaseball May 8th, 2009 at 9:41 pm

So far, I like the kid. Outstanding job by CC. Just what we needed. He certainly earned his money tonight. Now let’s get something going with Phil and Joba…come on, Yanks…let’s start something special!

  3. E-gawa May 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Wow.. it’s funny what injuries showcase sometimes.

  4. MC May 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Maybe he’ll catch tomorrow’s game too unless they give vet Cash a go.

  5. Someone Else May 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

So, I’ll take that ‘leadership’ from ARod, eh?

  6. Fra Fra Cervelli!! May 8th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Tante belle cose dal’italano e tante belle de piu. Speriamo che lui sta qua!!!!

  7. GMAN May 8th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Cervilli is fun to watch as he works behind the plate.
He plays with more enthusiasm than a 14 year old!

  8. Giuseppe Franco May 8th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

I said this a couple of times the last 48 hours but you could see Sabathia was about to go on a roll.

Although he lost the game, he was good against the Tigers and pitched a good game against the Angels as well.

That’s a tough lineup to dominate and he certainly did that. Good for him.

I’ve said it a number of times amidst all the gloom and doom and ledge jumping, get the rotation rolling and A-Rod back and everything else will start to fall into place.

  9. carl May 8th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

    Great performance from the two.

  10. abcd May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

cc’s best performance to date…what we thought we were signing up for.

arod flicking the bat after the homerun…dange we missed that.

drop tex to 6th and bring cano up to 3rd…

  11. steve May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Cervelli told Kim Jones Posada has been really helping him out and giving him advice. Nice teaching Jorgie

  12. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down. May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Good job outta CC and Cervelli.

  13. RalphieD May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

why would the yankees want kevin cash to catch…lets give cervelli a chance to show what he has…he looks pretty good behind the plate so far…

  14. Joe from Long Island May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

I guess CC had a little left in the 9th. Three Ks to end it.

  15. DonnieBaseball May 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

I want Cervelli starting tomorrow night.

  16. Emobacca May 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Will the Yankee Morality Police be up in arms that a kid like Cervelli fist pumped after the final out? Stay tuned…

  17. Nick in SF May 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

    re-post:

“The Yankees always win on Rickle’s birthday.”

They’ve won a bunch of times on my actual birthday, probably more than has any other franchise. If it happens again this year, I can guarantee that a lot of us will be even happier than we are today.

    (hint: I’m a Libra)

  18. Terry from NH May 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

I can sleep tonight and wake up without a sick feeling in my stomach tomorrow :)

  19. Tex's friend (Welcome back Alex) May 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

it’s girardi, so most likely no cervelli tomorrow.

  20. steve May 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

“why would the yankees want kevin cash to catch”

Someone mentioned in the previous post that Cash may have caught Hughes in AAA. If that’s so then, it makes sense to pair them together.

  21. Eric May 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Have a feeling that Girardi will have a tough decision when Posada gets off the DL on who to start, him or Cervelli

  22. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

I feel really good for Cervelli – that collision at home plate last year in ST was devastating for him as he lost basically a whole year of development. I remember him standing his ground and not budging as the Ray came barreling in – I loved Cervelli right then and there.

Great game by CC – we needed this desperately.

  23. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime May 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Cervelli’s first ML start will get lost amidst Sabathia’s gem, but the kid did everything right.

He’ll remember this night the rest of his life.

  24. Uncle Ellsworth May 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Nick does this “sum you up”?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related

  25. Bronx Jeers May 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Cervelli’s got some gusto to him huh?

That ump wasn’t too bad either. Nice big strikezone to keep the game moving along.
So happy to get away from that last quartet of umps.

  26. Nick in SF May 8th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

CC had nothing left to learn in the loss column.

  27. DT May 8th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

They’ve won a bunch of times on my actual birthday.
    (hint: I’m a Libra)

    you are half librarian?

If you have a birthday trend going, don’t be a bogart – share with all of us so we can get rich. ;-)

  28. sfill May 8th, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Helluva game CC! I am feelin’ good about this!! And kudos to Cervelli!

  29. RalphieD May 8th, 2009 at 9:52 pm

“Someone mentioned in the previous post that Cash may have caught Hughes in AAA. If that’s so then, it makes sense to pair them together”

i understand the reasoning but hey, cervelli never caught cc :)

  30. Larry May 8th, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I really like what I saw with Cervelli Tonight, He seems to bring energy to the game.
    Masterful game by CC
A-Rod HR took the pressure off of the whole team along with Terrific Defense in the 1st inning

  31. jennifer May 8th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

It will be interesting to see who catches Hughes. As it was pointed out Cash caught him in AAA. But Francisco had a great game tonight to. Bunted, got a hit and called a great game.

  32. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

“Cervelli told Kim Jones Posada has been really helping him out and giving him advice. Nice teaching Jorgie”

Trust me this was more Cisco than Georgy.

  33. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

He is a better hitter than those AA numbers say. And a damn good game caller.

  34. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint. Calm down. May 8th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Celtics lost. This night is getting better and better

  35. MikeyC May 8th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

“i understand the reasoning but hey, cervelli never caught cc”

True but, then again CC is a Vet. Wouldn’t you be a little more tense with a Rookie pitcher & a rookie catcher. Then, again Cervelli has been pretty impressive

  36. Vince May 8th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Where are those CC haters now?

  37. Nick in SF May 8th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

That’s spooky, Uncle Ellsworth. It’s like he wrote that about me and me alone.

  38. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Cisco caught him before in BP sessions but other than that this was his IQ w/ CC’s focus dominating the entire game.

  39. Mark D May 8th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Cervelli did some nice things behind the plate.
Give him an assist on the last strikeout, he set up inside and dropped outside for the pitch.

  40. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury - signifying nothing. May 8th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Must we slam Jorge to prop Cervelli up? Ack.

He called a good game in his own right and gave Jorge props. He’s in more of a position to know how much impact it had on his game than anyone here.

  41. Jason May 8th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Cervelli is a handsome guy too

  42. Brad Schutzman May 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

who threw the last cg shutout for the yanks?

  43. Stop. May 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

  44. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day pictures May 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Terry from NH – I absolutely understand what you’re saying. This will probably be the first good night’s sleep I’ve had in, well, when’s the last the Yanks won before this?

    :)

  45. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

BTW you can see why he reminds me of La Duca, kid gets hyped, more than hyped.

  46. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Steve, I missed that – sounds like Jorge is pulling a Girardi, lol

  47. Yank1 May 8th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

So did Girardi save his job for another day?

  48. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

“He called a good game in his own right and gave Jorge props. He’s in more of a position to know how much impact it had on his game than anyone here.”

Who’s slamming Georgy ? but please give me a break about him being some great game calling teacher, this was Cisco point blank, I’ve seen the kid call games, he’s an adanced kid, I just hope he adjusts and learns more about the batters in the ML to cont. that.

  49. DT May 8th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Be the first kid on your block to own a Cervelli Truthers
    T-shirt. Operators are standing by…

Yea thats right then, next thing you know Jorgie will become manager

  52. YankeeFan May 8th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

The win is really nice, but Jeter is struggling right now and no one seems to notice.
Another 0 for today, and of course, another GB past his left side…

  53. Richie May 8th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Cervelli gives you more than Molina right now.

  54. V Torch May 8th, 2009 at 10:05 pm

It probably was all Cervelli but, the commenter was just saying that he credited Posada on preparing him. He never said Posada called the game.

  57. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day pictures May 8th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

About Cervelli being handsome. I think most of you know this was a stressful week for me between work and the Yanks. So I hope you will indulge me letting my hair down.

Cervelli is adorable and has beautiful green eyes; Melky has the greatest dimple; Nick Markakis is a handsome guy, and I always thought Jeremy Guthrie was a nice looking guy too. There is some nice eye candy in the game of baseball.

I know you know that is not my focus. But they are men as well as players so I notice things about them as men.

    Thanks, that felt good.

    :)

  58. Scorpio May 8th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

Girardi praised Cervelli. Geez, it’s ONE game, let’s see him catch a few more before he de-thrones Yogi.

  59. Anthony May 8th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

CC beat the Orioles? Wow, practically no one’s done that this season.

  60. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury - signifying nothing. May 8th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

I never said Cervelli WASN’T a good catcher, Brandon. I’m more than happy with what he did tonight.

I just said that Cervelli is in a better position than you to know what impact Jorge had on it. Isn’t he?

If he wants to give Jorge credit, its no skin off my nose.

  61. dave May 8th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

You hafta feel good for the entire team – they really needed this win and I thin this kind of dominance by CC is the type that can carry a team with the momentum. I wouldnt be shocked if hughes comes out tomorrow and puts up a great perfomance.

  62. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 10:08 pm

    “Who is Cisco?”

    Francisco Cervelli

“Cervelli gives you more than Molina right now.”

just google what Mike Piazza had to say about Cisco. He was more impressed w/ the kid in the WBC, his bat will come late but the kid is advanced, when he got hurt the Yankees lost a leader that Tabata was afraid of and related to. Cisco got on top of every young kid he mentored in the system.

  63. Doreen May 8th, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Very impressed with Cervelli’s poise and the way he looks like he already fits in.

Another 0 for today, and of course, another GB past his left side…”

I personally believe we have the right to enjoy what was a tremendous game and talk about any perceived problems tomorrow. There’s not a game until night so that gives people plenty of time to morph back into player analysis.

    Just my opinion.

  66. m May 8th, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Heard all about A-rod’s homerun and CC’s gem.

Will have to watch this one and read through the game thread. Should be better than usual.

I heard that CC put 2 men on and then struck out the side in the 9th.

Nice that we could -avoid- rest the bullpen for a day.

  67. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

“If he wants to give Jorge credit, its no skin off my nose.”

I know but I doubt it was Georgy. CC is gushing about this kid in the interview & he hasn’t mentioned Georgy helping him at all so you know.

  68. Tom in N.J. May 8th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

    A win’s a win…

    I’ll worry about Jeter later.

Great game. Arod’s homer gave the team a big shot in arm.

  69. carl May 8th, 2009 at 10:12 pm

mel, Al from BK was nowhwere in sight for the whole game!

I’m thinking he had to be put in isolation because he had no outlet to flip out on the players or the team!

    :D

    I see a crush developing.

    In the long run:

    CC’s Performance > A-Rod’s Performance

    Great game tonight.

LOL the Marte chica commercial again

  77. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury - signifying nothing. May 8th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

CC is gushing about this kid in the interview & he hasn’t mentioned Georgy helping him at all so you know.
    ********************************************************

I’m glad CC is giving him credit. He deserves it.

Besides more confidence he gets and the more confidence and comfort the pitchers have in him, can only be good for the team. Its one game, so I’ll try to keep it in perspective – but I really liked what I saw tonight.

  78. Import Knight May 8th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

Veras and Marte need to getting outs rather than doing the cha cha with the chicas.

what’s the problem? you don’t want them to give the kid some confidence? why can’t they be happy for him?

  82. Nick in SF May 8th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Posada Truthers vs. Cervelli Truthers under the Cerone banner.

    Molina Truthers can referee.

  83. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

I don’t think we can underestimate how big Alex’ HR was, though. For him, it must have been a tremendous relief – I’ll bet he wanted to do a Scotty Brosius lion’s roar as he rounded third, lol. More importantly, it completely energized the team. I know they only scored once after that, but there’s no question that the Alex’s HR lifted their spirits. It also gave CC a lead – something that was becoming increasingly unfamiliar to Yankee SPs….

  84. m May 8th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

    trisha,

    haha. Don’t be mean.

1-0 now. But I want to know why the other teams have played 30 games?

  85. H-Town May 8th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

See how good the team looks when they get good pitching?

We scored 6, 3, 3, 4, 4 runs in our last 5 games. Could have stolen atleast a couple of those with a good pitching performance. That’s the name of the game.

  86. Benny Blanco May 8th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

    Orioles just acquired joey gathright.

  87. Clint May 8th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

  88. Pat M May 8th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

No quiters tonight at The LoHud,very nice to see..Something to build on

  89. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Even when we win, we have to find something to complain about. Now we’re going to complain about CC giving props to his catcher? How good do you think Cervelli feels now?

  90. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day pictures May 8th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

  92. Rockks May 8th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

I like how we’ve uncovered some nice young role players with grit like Pena and Cervelli. Guys who were not as heralded by most casual fans, but are coming up big. Already both play great D, and Pena showed he can handle the bat. Cervelli is going to get an opportunity now. And he’s only 22.

  93. Matt May 8th, 2009 at 10:23 pm

“Why is Manual using Putz with a 7-2 lead?”

They just scored five runs, so maybe he was warmed up and ready to go, so instead of ‘dry-humping’ him they put him in.

  94. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Perhaps a weight has been lifted off Alex’ shoulders – I’ll bet the clubhouse is a madhouse now, lol. This would have been a perfect time for AJ to pie him………but maybe his pieing days are done with.

  95. randy l. May 8th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

  97. Scorpio May 8th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

    abcd,

Who’s complaining about giving Cervelli confidence? Someone said Girardi RAVED, no he didn’t, he praised as he should have cause the kid did a good job. Are Pedestal pushers any better than bridge jumpers? Try reading the above posts before spouting off.

    Lovely lovely lovely.

    Night all.

    :)

  102. Marx May 8th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

AJ vs. Halladay makes me so nervous. I hope he can keep his emotions in check. Can’t be easy going back to your old home, facing your former teammates and going up against your mentor.

Hope we give him a pass if he gets shelled.

  103. trisha - click to see my bigger and better Opening Day pictures May 8th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    Doreen, really nice eyes too.

mel, just had to comment that I had posted about CC taking charge of the game (as well as the other staters) and some comfort level to do it with more of a rookie catcher behind the dish.

    Okay, I’m outta here!

  104. Bronx Jeers May 8th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    ————————————————————-

He could have just given himself a Coney-style release?

Cervelli: The newest member of the long-esteemed line of Yankee catchers whose last name ends in a vowel!

    The Italian Stallion!

Even though he’s not technically Italian.

  105. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

Marx, I wish it wasn’t AJ vs. Halladay. First, I think he’s going to be booed very loudly. The fans cheered him in his last start there, but they didn’t know then that he was going to sign with the Yankees. He’s very close with Halladay and, like in ST, he’s going to want to impress the Jays and the fans. I think AJ is in for a rough outing- forget what Halladay does.

Shhh – don’t tell randy l. that the Yankees are capable of developing decent players who can play defense!!! Only the Twins and Rays know how to do that!!!

    ;-)

Randy I, Compete game shutout will cure many an ailment…Alex’s dinger certainly set the tone….This team will be a very good team as the pieces begin to fall into place….Need to survive the injury segemant of the schedule

  110. Doreen May 8th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Girardi was pretty generous in his assessment of Cervelli as a defensive catcher. Thinks his bat will come around at some point. Sounded very confident about his abilities.

I like that he took the time to watch games and told Kim it was enough – he “had an idea.” Gotta like that. Maybe it’s what they all do, I don’t know. But I still like that he sounded confident in himself.

This was a good game all around. You did see CC building toward something like this in his past 2 games. It’s got to be a great pressure valve to start pitching the game with a lead.

I hope they can build on this. Cano and Melky with 2 hits each. Melky continues to be consistent, and maybe Cano puts an end to his “slump.”

Games like this help to bring back the optimism. :)

I, too, like when unheralded players do well – a la Cervelli and Pena. I think it’s a real boost. Not every player is going to be superstar, but if you can develop some solid guys to complement the stars, that’s a great thing.

Cervelli was struggling at the plate for Trenton but he did hit .299 in 2006 and .279 in 2007 for Tampa. Last year was pretty much lost due to his wrist. Cervelli may not hit much but people can’t except much out of Cash.

Cash is defense first and offense is a bonus. Either one hits and holds their own behind the dish, it’s their job to lose. Cashman doesn’t make a move to give up talent to get another catcher unless these guy fail miserably.

    Marx,

AJ is most likely going to have to pitch a complete game shutout. Halladay OWNS us. We never do anything against him.

8-1 against us since 2005, with an ERA of like 2.20.

Very good blog entry by Kim Jones:

    http://kimberlyjones.mlblogs.c....._thin.html

I love that Cervelli is confident, that Alex is happier and that Mo has his sense of humor in tact:

Mariano also says — with a smile — that Yankees fans are “spoiled” — imagine that — and that as soon as he has a bad stretch, they wonder if he’s hurt or if he’s losing it.
He’s not losing it, he says. “At the end of the season, we’ll see numbers as great as they always are.”

But if Hughes struggles tomorrow and they run all over Cervelli, everybody will say hes junk. He clearly showed some promise but its just 1 game. Great game tonight and it makes for better sleep tonight, but there needs to be a broader perspective on things

Jorge Vazquez with a grand slam. Hopefully we see him as a bench guy this year.

    ————————————————————

I’m thinking that Rodriguez should have a little better day tomorrow with Eaton pitching, but, unless he hangs a pitch or is forced to throw fastballs, Teixeira’s in for an ugly game. NYY has to start stringing 4-5 hits in a row and for 3-4 innings in these games. It was basically another one inning attack again.

Sabathia was marvelous, though, and Cervelli have have had one of his best defensive games of his pro career. It’s pitches in the dirt and a sometimes erratic arm that hurts him. If he does the same thing on offense in the majority of his games, he’ll be ok. Stick in a hit here and there, bunt, take a walk, and that’s all the offense you can hope for.

  129. Billy May 8th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

What the heck are you talking about I simply said I doubt it was much Georgy more Cervelli, the kid called a great game, if Georgy did anything it was a slow talk to say he’s in the show and now you just got to call a game. He prbly gave him a pep talk which is great, but that CG shut out that was CC and Cisco.

I agree but, theres nothing wrong with giving the guy some credit. He played his heart out. Not bad for a major league debut. We don’t know if he’ll be great. Too early to tell. You absolutely right just because he did great this game doesn’t mean he’ll pull this off again. Though, they may put Cash behind the plate for Hughes tomorrow being that Hughes is probably comfortable with him

  138. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

“No less a catching authority than Mike Piazza, the Italian team’s hitting coach, raved about Cervelli’s skills after the game:

“He’s so talented back there, you can’t say enough,” Piazza said. “He worked hard back there. His enthusiasm, you could tell.

“I remember one time, Roy Campanella told me years ago, ‘Everybody looks at you behind the plate, and when you drag, your body language is important because every fielder and the pitcher sees it.’

“His enthusiasm from the start of the game was just sky-high. He hustled. He’s got an amazing arm. I’m jealous — in a good way — because I see a player with a great future ahead of him. He’s going to get better with the bat. He’s going to get a little quicker.””

Read that, Piazza who was a good game caller, bad thrower, but just read that.

    ————-

Nah, it wasn’t just the Burnett comment. I’ve seen a lot of pessimism out of you lately.

Maybe you caught something from all the diseased ledge jumpers that have taken over this place lately.

Despite all that has gone wrong, I’m not worried about this team.

A-Rod has now returned. Is he a savior? Yes and no.

No, he can’t do it all by himself but there’s no question this is a different team with him the lineup. This team hasn’t played .500 ball without him the last couple of years.

Plus, and this is even more important, the rotation looks like it’s about to start rolling.

I said it yesterday but Sabathia was pitching much better the last couple of starts and just had some bad luck.

Burnett was pretty good the other night but his pitch count caught up to him with those strikeouts. Joba has looked considerably better and he looks like he’s about to takeoff.

Hughes had one good start and one bad one. He looks like a different pitcher right now and could very well get on a roll as well. Hopefully, Pettitte will start to have better outings – because, as you know, good pitching, like good hitting can be contagious.

Once that rotation starts to roll, everything else will start to fall into place. I’d be worried about this team if they had the rotations of 2005 to 2008 but this one will turn it around.

Sometimes it’s tough to be patient amidst a 5-game losing streak – but they have the rotation to carry them.

  146. Billy May 8th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

His last start at AAA, Hughes pitched to Chris Stewart and was dominant. I think Cash caught his first game before he got hurt.

I think Cervelli gets the start tomorrow mostly because Cash just came off the DL with an injury to his throwing shoulder. Another game off will help.

  150. Betsy May 8th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

I admit, GF, that this season has worn on me – when you combine it with last year, it’s just even harder to swallow. My first reactions are always at gut level and therefore my most negative. Still, the great thing about baseball is that there is always another game. Last night on the way home from the game, I almost felt like crying after Mo gave up the two HRs. However, I woke up today with a much different feeling – I felt like it was almost a new beginning. Maybe that had to do with Alex’ presence……..

You’re right about the rotation – and I have maintained my faith that they would pitch to the backs of their baseball cards. I don’t have any expectations for Phil – I’m just looking for postive signs from him as I feel that these games are learning experiences. I do think he’ll pitch much better than he did in Baltimore last year – he looks like a completely different pitcher (bigger, stronger, more confident). Joba’s improving, no question about it. AJ? I may have been overly tough on him -perhaps because he’s my favorite. I don’t know – it frustrated me that he gave up runs when the Yankees were already behind, but I know that it’s not fair to expect these guys to be perfect (and that’s often what they have to be with our inconsistent offense).

There was such a good feeling in the air after Alex hit his HR…..and CC kept it up. I’d love it if we could put another solid game together tomorrow….let the team start feeling good about itself instead of perhaps wondering when the other shoe is going to drop (another injury perhaps ? another way to lose a game?)………..

  151. Brandon "THE CIRCUS IS BACK !" May 8th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

Cervelli’s throwing out Jones in the 1st inning was the turning point in the game, as Baltimore was answereing Alex’s 3 run shot….The game was won right there, as it got CC out of a real jam……Great game all around by the kid….

    From the previous thread

I fail to see where Cervelli is not very good. He was converted to catcher. 2007, in 88 games he had 24 doubles and a 384 OBP and batted 278, got hurt for a month. People don’t hit many HR’s in Tampa. In 2008 he got hurt, broken wrist. If he’s good defensively where is this that he is not very good. Granted he came from AA but then so did Pena and he hasn’t embarassed himself. We know what the Yankees have in Cash,(not very much), why not give the kid a chance and if he’s not hurting the team, he’s developing. His forte is supposed to be his game calling. A good defensive catcher that can hit over 250 and maintain a 350 OBP is gold.

How did it go from muscle spasm in his finger to an aneurism in his armpit? Was that a misdiagnosis? Did he have more symptoms?

Weird, you never hear of this stuff with other sports. I mean Teddy Bruschi actually suffered a stroke or something. But so far, Shelley Duncan had something similar. Kenny Rogers, Cone, and one other pitcher recently had the same thing.

Whoever fails to see why people think cervelli may not be good – Again, he was hitting 190 in double A trenton before he came here. Thas two levels below the majors he is hitting below 200 – he is not likely to do a whole lot better in the majors over a stretch.

    Guisseppe,

I agree that this team is built on pitching and if we are going to win, it will be because of our pitching staff. I see signs that they are about to get on a roll today. Outside of pettitte, everyone seems to be looking a whole lot better than they were a few starts ago. Hughes looks way better than he ever has before in the majors as well. I can see them going on a tear on the back of solid starting pitching – i hope we are right.

  172. Patrick May 9th, 2009 at 12:00 am

Sabathia pitched a great game. Cervelli did a good job, was the bench calling the game or him?

By the way, to those who don’t know, Cervelli has always been a great defensive catcher. Before his wrist injury most thought of him as a solid backup in the majors which is probably what he’ll be. He can hit for a little average but he has no power and he’s still really really raw with the bat.

I think he will benefit from regular at-bats in the majors. He probably won’t crack .200 for long but in the long run it will help him. Give him a taste of the majors then send him back down when either Molina or Posada is healthy.

I’m happy for the guy, it’ll be fun to see what he does.

  173. AB May 9th, 2009 at 12:23 am

“How did it go from muscle spasm in his finger to an aneurism in his armpit? Was that a misdiagnosis? Did he have more symptoms?”

Sounds like a misdiagnosis but, there is probably more to it than we know. I still don’t get how they did those MRI’s and didn’t find anything then a week later they review an MRI and see it. That medical staff is lucky they caught it sooner rather than later. Hopefully everything will be alright. I read that David Cone talked to him
