One of our readers, David, asked me to share this with you. I met David and his sons at our Scranton outing last year and he is a very nice guy.

Green Chimneys of Brewster, N.Y., is raffling off a luxury suite at the Stadium for the July 4 game against the Blue Jays.

You can find the information here. Tickets are $100 and you could win a suite for 16, parking for three cars and all the food and beverages you can handle.

Green Chimneys is a nationally renowned, non-profit organization with a mission of restoring possibilities and creating futures for children with emotional, behavioral, social and learning challenges.

So if you have the money and are feeling lucky, give it a shot.

Thanks for spreading the word, Pete! Green Chimneys is an amazing place. My company became a corporate sponsor after we learned of the extraordinary work they’re doing.

I know $100 isn’t a quick-and-easy spend for most of us. But if you’re in a position to afford that kind of donation, it will warm your heart to learn how much good it will do.

Green Chimneys has done ground-breaking work on the mutually beneficial relationship between humans and animals. When you help animals, in many deep, profound ways, you help yourself.

    Sorry for digression.

Hopefully a blog reader will win and it will be all about the Yankees again!

    Thanks again,
    David

I hope this fundraiser goes well and that whoever the lucky winner is, blogs about their experiences in the luxury suite.

Don’t forget. July 4th is also the birthday of one Mr. George M. Steinbrenner.

we hear so much about joba’s celebrations, how come no one ever remarks on papelbon’s outragous antics, to me seem much more vocal than joba’s and directed at the last hitter too.

  7. m May 11th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

    Good morning, guys.

Kind of quiet day, but I found this on the CWS closer. If this were Joba or anyone else, there’d be a trial. And Ozzie’s reaction was kind of strange.

“Our guys have been hit a lot this series,” Jenks said. “With a one-run lead, I didn’t want to put anyone on base. I just wanted to say, ‘Hey, we can play that game, too.’ Other than that, the important thing was getting him out after that pitch.”
    ———–

Um you didn’t want to put him on? Hello if he backed up which would be a normal reaction he would have been hit.

    What a moron.

  9. Steve B May 11th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I wonder if Jenks hasn’t earned himself a 2-3 day vacation complimnets of MLB’s chief disciplinarian.

    You admit to nothing.

  10. ellen May 11th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Really, Steve! He’s never heard of plausible deniability? How can MLB investigate this and not come to the conclusion that it was intentional, after Jenks said so?

  11. Steve B May 11th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

    complimnets = compliments

  12. Taylor May 11th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Pete, you and your blog were just mentioned by Chris Shearn before the Francesca show. I assume you already knew but props!

IMO, just guessing, Joba will make a little statement to Huff later in the year. Not next time he pitches against the O’s, maybe a game or two after that. He played it right by saying he didn’t see Huff doing it.

Joba’s fist pump, as the point has been soooo belabored, is nothing different from the kind of thing every other pitcher who does it. He’s not being arrogant or showing anybody up by directing his fist pump at the guy he just got out. Nor are 98% of the other guys who have ever done it. From what we can see he doesn’t look a the guy or at the opposing dugout, he’s just … well, pumped. Nobody should care.

Huff pumping or whatever at Joba yesterday as a response? I could see some guys getting ticked. But, again, nobody should care if Huff wants to be a wanker (or arrogant perhaps?) and by directing one at Joba for what amounts to nothing. Pretty arrogant of Huff to assume what Joba’s thinking when he does his thing. He just makes himself look bad by doing so.

The high road would be for Joba to do nothing … it’d be nice to see it turn out that way. A slider might still inadvertently slip out of his hand Youkilis-style though.

  14. m May 11th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

    ANSKY,

Maybe Huff needs to overcompensate for his girly name.

I think Joba should’ve stopped short of his veiled threat. But everything else was spot on.

    From Brian Hoch:

“I’m not going to make everybody happy. I understand that,” he said. “I’m out here to win ballgames, I’m not here to make friends, to be honest with you. If I make friends along the way, awesome. But this is about this team in here and giving them everything I’ve got. If I don’t show my emotion, that’s not me being a person and a baseball player. That’s cutting this team short of everything I can give them.”

  15. jennifer May 11th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Read that the O’s couldn’t understand why Joba was fist pumping during a game we were losing. Why are they concerned with what the Yankees are doing vs the soxs? Shouldn’t they worry about their last place team?

  16. William Buckner May 11th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

My feeling on the whole Joba, Huff thing is this.

Huff was rubbed wrong by the whole fist pump thing, which is fine.

When he hit the HR and did it around 1st, he made his point, and if he stopped there, Joba shouldn’t have a problem with it.

But doing it again at home was too much. It wasn’t in the heat of the moment and it wasn’t emotions. It was to be a jerk and to incite.

I think Huff looks like a tool at home because it was so contrived. And I am all for emotions coming out in baseball, but this was a bad end zone celebration.

  17. SJ44 May 11th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

There have been fewer recent non-stories in recent years than the Joba Fist Pump “controversy”.

Huff did what he did, Joba will continue to do what he does, and life will go on.

There is a reason why Baltimore is a last place team.

When your mind is more on showing up Joba than winning games, that’s a last place mentality.

  18. m May 11th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    jennifer,

And along the same lines, the Yankees need to worry about themselves. They need to get on a serious roll. I didn’t realize it, but the mets are on a 7 game win streak thanks to Livan’s inning eating appearance yesterday. They’re now 4 games over .500.

4 GB of both the Jays & the Sox in the loss column, so they’re within reach but they have to move soon.

The Jays have some serious offense this season, and our pitchers have been much to generous. But, it’ll be interesting to see what the Jays do against some division opponents.

  19. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime May 11th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Wish I could afford to enter that raffle!

FWIW, I don’t give a cantprintinpaper about the fist pumps. I LIKE it when players show emotion.

At the very least it lets you know that they care.

  20. Mad Max May 11th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Francessa has been pretty calm about the Joba thing

But he is getting on Girardi for the “no comment”, saying it was clear he had a problem with Huff but he shouldn’t because he allows Joba to do it.

Agreed, but I kind of like the bad blood coming out again. Between this and some chippiness with the Sox last week isn’t a bad thing.

I do think the fact that the O’s were concerned with a Yankees-Sox game is kind of weird.

  22. Betsy May 11th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

    Couldn’t agree more, SJ.

I really have no problem with what Huff did because I can see how Joba would rub people the wrong way. I agree that he doesn’t do it to show teams up – he’s just a very emotional, exuberant fellow in general – but that really doesn’t matter. If other teams think he’s showing them up, then that’s what counts. It does seem rather silly for the Orioles to have planned this out – actually, it seems rather bush league and petty for such a proud franchise. Joba got his best revenge by shutting the O’s down and his team winning the game. This is much ado about nothing, especially as the Yankees have a critical series against the Jays coming up – this is what is important, not whether teams like Joba or not.

I’m a believer in the Jays, so I think this will be a very tough series for the Yankees to win. I assume Alex will be DHing….meaning Pena at 3rd (better not be Berroa).

  23. m May 11th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Well, to be fair we all got on manny when he clapped his big mickey mouse gloves when he homered in a blowout loss in the postseason with the Dodgers.

In a way, they’re right, but to talk about it means they spend way too much time thinking about Jobber.

  24. SJ44 May 11th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Everytime a pitcher can get in a batters head, regardless of the reason, its an advantage to the pitcher.

Clearly, Joba is in hitters heads because they want to show him up.

The key now is for Joba to use that knowledge to his advantage. Especially in the first inning.

Part of his learning process is to use the hitters aggression to his advantage. That will come.

I agree about having some bad blood boiling This team needs to have more guys play with an edge about them.

If that happens, they will be a better ballclub.

  25. Seth May 11th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

When the Cardinals beat the Mets in game 7, they were chanting “Jose, Jose, Jose” in the clubhouse (remember, Reyes had that dance he did and they played that song and it annoyed everyone).

If you do things to bring attention to yourself (intentionally or not), you will get mocked. Joba has to deal with the fact that he annoys the opposition and things like this might happen. He just needs to worry about pitching. Good for him for not letting Huff take him out of his game yesterday.

  26. yankee 822 May 11th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

If anyone saw the Giants/Dodgers game yesterday, Blake hit a HR off Wilson in the 12th inning to tie the game and when he got back in the dugout, he crossed his arms and made a cross sign (which is what Wilson does after he gets a save) and had a smirk on his face. Wilson didn’t comment but his teammates were ticked off at Blake because they knew it was on purpose.

This type of stuff happens all the time.

  27. m May 11th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Well, at least we’re not talking about Joba to the pen!

    SJ,

What are your impressions of Cervelli so far?

  28. m May 11th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

    yankee822,

And the funny part? Is the Dodgers blew the game right after that. Loaded the bases and gave up 2 runs. Ended up losing the game (1-3 w/o manny).

  29. Rishi May 11th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

    new post :)

  30. William Buckner May 11th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

    m,

I never minded when Manny Cadillaced the bases or any of his other theatric because I alway thought it was real and in the moment. Huff was not.

    SJ,

Your right about Joba using hitter emotions. I think he probably knows that now. I think his location just is a bit off early in games.

The fact that they are showing some fight just makes for a more appealing team. I believe when whole, this team will put together a nice run.

And winning is the best revenge for teams like the O’s who want to act kind of classless.

  31. Uncle Ellsworth May 11th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

    Huff is a Loser.

Boston.com has a piece about Lou Merloni saying that the Sox we’re lectured by a Doctor on the proper way to take steroids.

How come no one else in the media is talking about that?

MLB, ownership and PA continue to get a pass while a few players are pilloried.

  32. Hokiehill May 11th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Ellsworth, I agree it’s odd, but that is not a Boston only phenomenon…the players union schools every player on how to avoid testing positive to this day…until that stops the “clean” players will continuously have to deal with being guilty until proven innocent.

  33. Clay Buchholz Loves Laptops - Latest Blog Entry: My Interview With Bill Gallo May 11th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

    Uncle Ellsworth,

Do you have a link to the Merloni comments?
