Yankees get a workout in

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 12, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees have a big crowd for their early workout at the Rogers Centre.

A-Rod, Swisher, Pena, Teixeira, Cano, Cabrera, Cash, Cervelli, Berroa, Gardner, Nady. Joba and Veras are shagging flies, too.

Swisher got himself a brutal haircut. Like he head-butted a lawnmower. I’m one to talk, I know. But still.

Is Nady still due to hit of the tee on Friday?

  2. Marco May 12th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Looks like our new home stadium…

  3. jennifer May 12th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Now Pete you can’t post a comment like that without posting a picture.

    Lets see swish.

  4. EvoLuTioN May 12th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

oh god i can’t wait to see swish

  5. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime May 12th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Swisher pics or it didn’t happen.

  6. hardwired May 12th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Maybe Swish went to Flaherty’s barber.

  7. Guy Incognito May 12th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Maybe Swish got his hands on a Suck-N-Cut.

“As you can see, it sucks as it cuts!”
    “It certainly does suck.”

    Nice work…. thumbs up!

C’mon Pete, we need photographic evidence. Rebecca, are you a new aunt?

  10. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble! May 12th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

    Need to see Swish

Look at those socialist Canadians, with no moat to protect the Chosen Ones from the riff raff.

  12. dave May 12th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

iTS about as big a crowd as the new yankee stadium an hour before the game no?

Turf…I don’t like turf, but it’s an indoor stadium and therefore not conducive to a long-lived grass surface.

But would it kill them to put an actual dirt diamond with basepaths down? The dirt islands around the bags is really not enough.

    Perhaps the least surprising news:

Scott Proctor will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday and miss the remainder of the season.

Joe Torre had his hands on Proctor for the better part of the last three years, and he’s paying for it now. After a two and a half month DL stint last year, he was never able to get healthy for the Marlins. Tommy John surgeries roughly take a year to recover from.

    pete,

please read, pass on to somebody higher up or ask some players about any of the comments in the last section. I would loove to hear what some of the players think about their management showing a complete lack of respect for their fans.

  17. Steve B May 12th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Swish has hit at .230 since April 12. This haircut comes at the right time. If it works, Teixeira’s next.

  18. Rudy May 12th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

If two New Yorkers want to see Yanks-Mariners, it is cheaper for them to both fly round-trip to Seattle, stay in a nice hotel for 3 days, get fancy dinners and a rental car, and buy the best Mariners tickets for two games ($2,800)—than to get the best Yankee Stadium tickets for one game ($5000).

  19. SCX May 12th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Dave – don’t expect any players to (publicly) say anything other than the company line. They may 100% agree with the majority of fans, but I doubt anyone will actually call out team management.

  20. Cor Shep May 12th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Rudy – it’s 1250 for each seat now

  21. JohnC May 12th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Bet Halladay Ks Swisher 3 times tonight.

  22. m May 12th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

It would cost less for me to fly first class to NY and spend the night at the Plaza than it would for me to buy one ticket at $2500. But why would I? Wouldn’t it make sense for me and anyone else that’s not a millionaire to buy a more reasonably priced ticket?

From what I understand, other tickets are available. So why these columnists choose to play these “it’s cheaper to…” scenarios is beyond me.

Want to see the game? Go to stub-hub and buy the ticket of your choice for pennies on the dollar. Or better yet, get on a plane ride and come spend a week in Hawaii. We’d love to see you.

  23. Shanahan May 12th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Rudy – at least post the link to give credit where it’s due before you pass someone else’s work off as your own idea –

A little over a week ago I wrote the Eric Duncan was batting .309 and maybe he turned the corner. After going 1 for his last 35 he is now batting .214 so I guess the answer is no.

  25. Shanahan May 12th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

M – I’d love to see you (HI) too!! Especially since from my desk, the view is quite sub-par in comparison…

  26. tampayank May 12th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Packages to Vegas are a great deal right now, making the annual trek up north for a game a challenge w the current pricing mess at the new ballpark.

  27. Matthew May 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

I lived in West Texas in the 80s… not bad

  28. Shanahan May 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

West Texas = awesome Mulie land.

  29. dave May 12th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

    SCX,

Yea if pete asked jeter or mo – I wouldnt expect them to say a thing. But I dont think some players even know what he said today so the shock value may be enough for someone to blurt out what they actually think of that BS about coming into his house like the big spenders own part of the stadium. I can see a few guys who might say something that doesnt quite walk the straight company line or at the very least sympathasizes with the fan. What would the yanks FO do for that? NOTHING! Either way, im curious to see what a few players would actually say besides jeter that is.

Real baseball is played under the sky with grass, not in a dome with a carpet

Where the hell is Jeter? He needs the most extra work.

  33. Stop. May 12th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Jeter spent his off day in Tampa — mostly with coaches and trainers. He’s doing his work.

  34. Matthew May 12th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

    Uncle,

    Thanks! hilarious

  35. dave May 12th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

aNYONE see brackman pitch last night?? I didnt see it but looking at the numbers it looks like he put up quite a performance and i heard it was on mlb.tv or something like that.

For anyone who cares and didnt see it:

8 innings 7 hits 1 walk 2 ER and 9 Ks. I am not positive but that looks like his best performance so far by the numbers. Glad to see him performing so well early on. He could be some pitcher in the future.

  36. SJ44 May 12th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Yeah, good call, questioning Derek Jeter’s work ethic.

    Brilliant observation.

There is nothing wrong with the work ethic on this team.

There is nothing wrong in the clubhouse on this team.

The problem with this team is pitching. It hasn’t been as hyped thus far.

If the pitching performs at the levels its expected, this team will be competitive. If not, it won’t, and it won’t matter who comes out for early BP.

  37. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble! May 12th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Uncle E, I just reread that thread and I still laugh at it.

IF YANKEES WANTED REAL FANS THEY WOULD DO A FIST FIGHTING TOURNAMENT OUTSIDE THE STADIUM.

    lol

  38. Mark21 May 12th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

    Texas in the 80s?

    Ahh the good old days

  39. Drew May 12th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Rebecca, it comes up as content unavailable, but I’ll guess and say Congratulations!

  41. RCK May 12th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
