Today in The Journal News
The fans came to boo A.J.Burnett and were cheering Roy Halladay at the end as the Blue Jays beat the Yankees last night.
Derek Jeter missed his first game of the season. This notebook also has updates on Chien-Ming Wang, Johnny Damon, Brian Bruney and Jorge Posada.
Sam Borden writes that the new Yankee Stadium can be redeeemed. But do the Yankees care to make the necessary changes?

Lonn Trost is the devil!
it was pretty hilarious to see the stadium in toronto packed to the roof with losers there to either A) boo burnett or b) cheer for the yankees
too bad they dont get that kinda turn out to actually root for their team that is in first place
Has A-Rod made it to first base yet on that grounder to third?
the attitude of the top brass, displayed by Lonn Trost is the only thing that will keep the new Yankee Stadium from continuing to be a laughing stock as far as fan relations are concerned. I’m glad I wasn’t at the press conference to hear that response or I would have thrown something. Apparantly the people who don’t want Joe Shmoe’s kid trying to get autographs during BP in their seats, aren’t actually buying the seats…seems obvious that in this economy, the Yankees are catering to the wrong crowd. I was sitting in lower level seats in Baltimore and they let people get close to the dugouts/front rows to get autographs and pictures as long as the batting practice net was out and I had no problem with that
Pretty Freudian that Loon would equate buying a Legends seat with buying a house.
Sam/Pete…one of the first things to recovery is to first admit you have a problem, and I think that they have conceded that there is a problem.
Now it is whether or not they think it is a bad economy problem or actual problems with the way the Stadium was designed/constructed.
I still can’t believe they moved out of the old Yankee Stadium. What a stupid, unnecessary move. Nice way to alienate the entire fanbase with the new mallpark.
I actually have tickets for next week (discounted $15 per nosebleed through my son’s little league) and I find myself unsure of whether or not I want to go. That says a lot, coming from a former season ticket holder.
Can I get those Legends seats no money down and finance them over 30 years, Lonn????
ditmars1929…don’t you even want to make your own judgements?
I went last week to the rainout game against the Angels and I would say that it was a great time…had a few drinks at one of the bars and waited it out.
If I was at the old Stadium I would be in the rain in my seats or in a crowded concorse.

Can I get those Legends seats no money down and finance them over 30 years, Lonn????
that’s why the economy is broken. NO.
“ditmars1929…don’t you even want to make your own judgements?”
Vader, you’re correct, I should have a more open mind, but for a long line of memories that would take up too much space here, I’m having trouble with seeing the Yankees play in another stadium, especially one built on such blatant (and over-reaching) greed.
I will say this however – Steinbrenner, in the closing ceremonies or whatever you want to call it, kept on saying what a “cathedral” Yankee Stadium was. Then, we got that reinforced into the deepest pink of our brains by that idiot, Michael Kay, who added the adjective “sacred”, and he hasn’t stopped yammering yet. So, George, if it’s such a “cathedral”, then why the f did you tear it down??? The Vatican, if you want to talk about an actual cathedral, has been around for several centuries, and they haven’t torn it down yet so that the Pope can have more skyboxes for his weekly addresses.
Can you sort of see my point now, Vader? I do apologize for the religious analogy.
Trost needs to change his attitude or the Yankees need to fire Trost. No place in any organization for a man who spits on the customers.
I’m with ditmars on the Stadium issue. Totally unnecessary bit of fincial overreach from the Boss. Lots of ego involved, too. He’s an old man and he wanted his own monument. Wasn’t good enough for him to be a caretaker of Jacob Ruppert’s park, he needed his own.
Stupid and pointless. Self-defeating, too. Instead of going out on a good note, he’ll be leaving the sad mess that is the new Stadium and the wreckage of the great old park in his wake. But that’s the story of George; always plenty of bad to go with the good.
Re: The prior stadium thread:
I can’t write how much I agree with almost all of the sentiments expressed here. I am sorry to say that I saw this coming, from back when the idea of a new stadium was getting traction. (Note: when I refer to the last Yankee Stadium, it was always capitalized in honor, this new place is just Yankee stadium.) In fact, they actually made it WORSE than I expected (I guess I didn’t factor in George’s complete decline and the emergence of the pinheads Trost and Levine). I have zero interest in attending this new stadium, I may go ONCE this year out of curiousity (and if I can get free or very cheap seats on Stubhub). It saddens me to see this unique and priceless experience destroyed. I am glad that my kids got to experience things the way they used to be, but am very sad that my grandkids (still waiting and hoping!) will NEVER be able to share the same experiences (and very likely will ever become loyal & dedicated fans as their prior 3 generations have always been). YES HD works very well for me at this point in time. Maybe, just maybe, Hank and Hal will wise up and jettison these 2 pinheads… before it is too late!
Well spoken, Whatever.
Mikey S,
Definitely agree with your point. No other company who spits on their customers is going to be very successful.
However, Trost probably sees letting little kids come down to the field for autographs as spitting on his wealthiest customers. Definitely the wrong attitude to have, especially when the rich folks aren’t exactly filling those seats.
Bottom line — Yankee brass is probably the worst in all of sports when it comes to deadling with the fan base. And this goes back long before the shenanigans of the new stadium. They’ve always had terrible customer relations.
The Yankees never really cared about the fans-they were about winning. That’s OK if you win, but things are eerily reminiscent of the late 1960′s: Aging stars, a nonproductive farm system, and competition that has caught up, and is far more nimble. The Red Sox are light years ahead of the Yankees in orginizational ability and fan friendliness, and they almost have as much money. That being said, the attitude of Trost, which amounts to putting an infereior product on the field, charging more for it, treating the paying customers with contempt, and pretending nothing is wrong, is breathtakingly stupid, and in any other non-socialized business, would get him fired. I do believe though, that this attiude is cathing up with the Yankees, and in the coming years, there may be more than the Legends Suites that are empty.
