More troubles for Leyritz

Peter Abraham

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Jim Leyritz has been hospitalized after threatening suicide. He is awaiting trial on DUI-manslaughter.

According to police, Leyritz became upset Wednesday night because a court-ordered monitoring device installed in his car to monitor his blood alcohol content prevented his vehicle from starting.

    epic fail

Brutal news. The guy severely screwed up but it is real sad to hear this kind of news. I hope The King can get his life together, he was responsible for some unbelievable moments as a Yankee.

If he doesn’t consume alcohol, the car starts. Can’t pretend to know what’s it like to suffer from alcoholism. But if ending a person’s life doesn’t scare one straight, I can’t think of what would. The very idea he looked to start the car after drinking is very disheartening.

  5. ANSKY

Let’s hope the device ‘malfunctioned’ because it was an actual malfunction not because he was skunked.

    My guess? Ahhhhh well ….

  6. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

    Man that is awful.

Meanwhile Verlander has 11 K through 5 innings. Think maybe he wants a Cy Young or something?

  7. miggs

    Its sad.

Its hard for others to judge him, and also quite unfair. I have an uncle who’s a booze hound. Its a struggle for him daily.

If Leyritz was hammered you can’t scold him for trying to start the car. That’s not saying its right, but you can’t rip him for it. Most drunks like him tend to blackout during binges. He probably didn’t even know what he was doing.

It just goes to show how far some can fall. Its been a long way down for Leyritz.

I saw the Rosales video and even his teammates were laughing at him running so fast. Someone should tell him to savor the moment.

How does he even have the legal right to drive a car?

  12. m

Sounds like rock bottom to me. Best of luck to the guy, sounds like he needs help.

sucks to be this messed up..kill somebody…and even after this much time…not have a handle on your addictions.

  14. Steve B

“If Leyritz was hammered you can’t scold him for trying to start the car.”

Respectfully disagree, Miggs. According to the report, this is at least the 5th time he has tried to start his vehicle after drinking. That indicates little to no interest in helping himself and a wreckless disregard for others. He should not only be scolded, he should be jailed.

  15. ANSKY

I think his “right” to drive is contingent on taht device being there. It’s pre-trial so he’s not officially guilty yet.

I put the word “right” in quotes because it’s not actually a “right”. It’s a “privilege”. Not just in a situation like Leyritz’s, that’s what it is for all of us. It can be taken away from all of us. We all have to earn the privilege and maintain it with a good (in some cases ‘adequate enough’) driving record.

  16. Ace

They should have let this guy kill himself. Better him than one of our innocent family members driving anywhere near this bum.

  17. Rose

    Best of luck to Leyritz?

What do you say to the family of the person he killed?

  18. ANSKY

    I dunno about that, Ace.
I see your point, but I dunno.

  19. Ace

Really Ansky? You would rather put your family at risk with a guy like this on the road? He’s already killed one person, and he has tried to start his car another 5 times under the influence of alcohol.

I’m sorry to be so harsh. But I’m just willing to say what many are thinking…

  20. KO

this guy needs help. I guess he truly became lost after having to retire from baseball. a lot of ex athletes go nuts in one form or another because they feel like they don’t have a purpose anymore or just don’t know what to do after they’re done playing

  21. Doris from Rego Park

this guy doesnt need help. he needs to be locked up for the rest of his life and whatever happens after that so be it

For those saying we would be better off with him dead, keep in mind the driver that was killed in the accident had a higher BAC than he did! Yet people sympathize (rightly so) with her. It is a two way street. What he did was wrong and should be punished, but let’s not get carried away.

That is such a cop out statement, and I hope you realize that it is.

  24. E

What am I copping out of? My point is drunk driving does not deserve death.

    Rose -

Leyritz did kill someone while DUI. But a fact that’s being left out a lot in this story is that the other driver (the person he killed) was also DUI as well.

Both of them shouldn’t have been out there.

    —-

No, but that lady is officially dead

  27. Matty

    There is no cop-out statement.

Leyritz made a mistake that’ll haunt him for the rest of his life. But the person he killed made the SAME EXACT MISTAKE. So what makes her better than Leyritz? She wasn’t exactly 100% innocent in this case.

If Leyritz plowed into a minivan full of kids, I could see demonizing him to the point of the death penalty. But both of them should not have been on the road.

I really can’t speak about the DUI laws because everything is so different. Joba DUI’ed, he paid a fine. The guy killed Nick Adenhart, and people want him dead. Leyritz’s situation is different than the Joba and Adenhart situation.

  28. Matty

    YankeeRay -

“SHE IS HIGH, SHE IS DRUNK, SHE IS… GONE! Jimmy Leyritz just blasted one out of the right lane. He’s putting on the Leyritz, and the Yankees lead 2-0!”

  29. Matty

I would like to apologize for that comment.

  30. Corey

it did make me laugh…i know, i’m sick

  31. The Bri-man

I’ve read somewhere that Leyritz blew through all his career earnings.

  32. rbj

Shame that he’s fallen so far. I hope others look at this as a message to not let alcohol take control of your life.

  33. Art Vandelay

Jim Leyritz, despite whatever he did on the field, should be treated as the law prescribes. And I hope that’s some form of imprisonment and rehabilitation.

  34. Pepitone

Really hate to hear this, Jimmy Leyritz will always be remembered by me as that guy who hit the game tying home run in the 96 WS against Atlanta. I think it was game 3. Set the tone for the rest of the series, the Yanks never lost another game.

Anyway, here’s hoping he gets some much needed help.

  35. Ron

Leyritz should be in Rehab, not trying to drive a car and endanger innocent people. Barring a miracle, he’s going to jail, and maybe he’ll be able to straighten his life out in there. But for now, thats where he belongs.
