Now that’s leadership

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 14, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui get back in the lineup and the Yankees win. It wasn’t that simple, of course. But each did play a big role tonight. Jeter’s RBI single tied it and Godzilla’s homer won it for CC Sabathia.

“We decided we’d both come back today and try and help us out,” Jeter said with a laugh. “It was my idea. I called him this morning.”

Sabathia (2 ER in 17 innings) looks like CC Sabathia. Mariano Rivera looks like Mariano Rivera again and the Yankees got help from guys like Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli.

The Yankees have won 4 of 6 and now head home for 10 games.

“It’s a nice little shift for us,” Joe Girardi said. “This is something that you can build on.”

    Missed another good one, huh?

Just keep winning series, and we’ll end up on top.

That Cervelli kid’s got moxy, huh?

The Yanks are 3 back in the loss column from both Toronto and Boston now.

Considering how bad they’ve played in division, who they’ve been playing without, and how mediocre the pitching has been; not too shabby.

Again Jetes you better be healthy for the majority of this season.

I don’t want to look at Cisco’s eyes it’s too much to handle for the human mind. Phil we need ya tomorrow, work on getting on top of the ball kid.

It’s never a bad thing to quote Herm Edwards. HELLO?!? You play to win the game

  14. m May 15th, 2009 at 12:00 am

As long as the pitchers look into his eyes and trust him. ;)

Read through the game thread. Gary G, hope you keep coming back. Hopefully, those that are giving you a hard time will back off. Hate it when Yankee fans are treated worse than Red Sox fans.

I love what’s happening with Cervelli. Pan back to spring training, back to Trenton, scuffling, hitting 190. Click! He’s in Yankee stadium catching CC, CC praises him, Click, it’s a hit and run, he’s batting over 300. And Mr Jeter asks his opinion. He carries a tape recorder for posterity. For the rest of life he can say “So CC said to me”. Only happens in baseball folks.

  19. igotid88 May 15th, 2009 at 12:02 am

    1. How does a guy hitting .190 in AA come up to the bigs and help out the team so much? He looks really good at the plate.

    2. John Sterling blew a call really hard tonight. When Gardner threw the runner out at home, not only did sterling call him safe, but once he realized he was thrown out, there was no excitement in his voice whatsoever. He’s getting worse every year. It seems as though every shallow pop fly is hit completely out of the stadium into the parking lot. Im just saying.

  25. Les Deux May 15th, 2009 at 12:14 am

Their should be a Brett Gardner drinking game. Every time Pete gives Brett a mention for something and completely ignores a player who does the same thing, drink a shot. Everyone will die of alcohol poisoning.

Why can’t you just pretend to be objective? I think your infatuation with Brett has gone a little bit too far.

I just came back from a day in the city, so when I saw the score of the game at Penn Station, I did a pump fist of my own, lol.

Really great win for the Yankees, taking 2/3 from the Blue Jays on their own turf. Obviously I missed the game, but it sounds like they executed the fundamentals once again. Great job by CC – he’s starting to look like the horse we knew he was. You can’t put a price on having someone like him at the top of the rotation.

I’m surprised Jeter played – I wonder if this is the right move. I would have DL’d him, frankly – I’m still worried about him aggravating the injury. Great job, though, tying the game up – Jeter has come through big time this year (not all the time, but a lot).

Frankie can obviously call a good game – I don’t know what he did tonight offensively, but the former is vital to what he has to do and I’m thrilled so far.

It was hilarious after the final out. Cervelli fist pumped and came running out to the mound. Then it hit him “My God that’s Mo Rivera, Baseball God walking. What do I do? Bow, kiss his ring, give him a bear hug”? So he did a fist bump. Priceless.

Last thing he (or we) need is a 2.1 IP, 6 ER performance

  39. James 3D May 15th, 2009 at 12:29 am

Rockets remind me of the 90s Knicks… they may not have been more talented than the teams they were playing but they were tough as nails and just imposed their will on the opposition. Just tough, physical, wearing down style of play

  40. m May 15th, 2009 at 12:30 am

Two questions. Should Swisher sit tomorrow? Would Girardi actually do it?

  41. Holla May 15th, 2009 at 12:31 am

  42. IrishCarBomb May 15th, 2009 at 12:31 am

the fact that Hughes is pitching tomorrow makes me cringe.

Can’t believe they didn’t make the Santana trade..

  43. DET x 2 May 15th, 2009 at 12:33 am

Swisher has been in a complete free-fall. Hitting .160 for over a month.

Though I suppose it isin’t really a free fall.. He is merely sliding down to his .240 career average.

Girardi tried to rest him on Tuesday but Matsui got banged up so he had to come in the game

  44. Harold May 15th, 2009 at 12:35 am

    Hughes pitching tomorrow? :(

  51. Betsy May 15th, 2009 at 12:49 am

I should be banned from the Phil Hughes fan club for saying this, but I have zero confidence that he will pitch decently tomorrow………too bad he’s on the mound when the Yankees are looking to get a good streak going. I still think he’ll be a top flight pitcher, but obviously he’s not ready – last out was just abysmal. Might we expect Eiland to figure out his arm slot problem before Phil leaves the pen this time?

I read what Jayson Stark had to say about Alex – what a jerk. The guy was out for months and is obviously rusty……so he evaluates Alex like he’s had a full spring training. Starkt is really as stupid as he looks. Alex will be fine…….and then I don’t want to hear this clown say he knew it all along.

I detest Carlos Delgado for his part in getting Willie Randolph fired, but I would never wish him or anyone an injury – I hope he’ll be ok.

  52. stuart May 15th, 2009 at 12:51 am

  53. Betsy May 15th, 2009 at 12:52 am

Gee Clyde, have you watched any of AJ’s games ? Except for one game, he’s kept the Yankees in all of his games. I realize AJ doesn’t have a lot of fans here and that’s fine, but at least be fair to him.

  54. stuart May 15th, 2009 at 12:52 am

I am not saying gardner is going to be a star but he can run and has some potential..he is a legit 4th OF and we will see from there…

  55. m May 15th, 2009 at 12:57 am

    Betsy,

No one will be surprised to hear this from me, but I say give the kid a chance. Unfortunately, at this point in his career, he’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. But we just might be smiling at the end of the night tomorrow. Oh, wait. Is it on SNY or whatever station’s been cursing the Yankees on Friday nights?

  56. Buddy Biancalana May 15th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Hughes better show some guts out there or he’ll lose the clubhouse. Damon’s quote should be a wakeup call.

No 1.2 IP, 7 ER performance when we’re trying to start a winning streak

  58. Brandon aka MotherLover "It would be my honor to be your new stepfaaaaaaather" May 15th, 2009 at 12:58 am

Unless KRod can warm up in the next 20 secs the Mets are in trouble.

  59. Travis May 15th, 2009 at 1:00 am

The Twins are really not a good team for him to face

They are not a HR/free-swinging team like Detroit. Minnesota is the best fundamentals team in the league. They’ll take pitches, move runners over etc. They are also red-hot at the plate at the moment.

If he doesn’t have his command, it’s game over.

  60. E-Rod May 15th, 2009 at 1:01 am

Well AJ is getting paid 1\2 of that CC does, so we should expect 1\2 the performance, which is what he has given us. Though unless you expected him to be an ace, this should not be a surprise.

Epic. The complaining begins, not only a day in advance. But in some cases days in advance.

Who’s starting against the Mets? Maybe someone can extrapolate the rotation and set a record of complaining in advance.

  64. Nick in SF May 15th, 2009 at 1:05 am

If Hughes shows up, all credit to team-first warrior Johnny Damon.

If Hughes stinks it up, blame Phil Hughes!

    :)

  65. Immortal Tech May 15th, 2009 at 1:05 am

AJ hasn’t won a game in over a month. His ERA is almost 7 in that time period. Take out the Boston start and it is still over 5.

No need to sugarcoat it. He hasn’t gotten it done. After Hughes, he has been one of the problems in the rotation. He needs to step it up.

  66. raymagnetic May 15th, 2009 at 1:06 am

It’s a shame so many of you can’t even enjoy a 4-2 roadtrip.

Instead of being happy the Yankees just took the series from the first place team the worry now turns to hoping Phil Hughes last longer than 2 innings.

    Absolutely hilarious.

I don’t know, maybe just wait until they play the game and see what happens?

I love how one poster would have put Jeter on the DL when they have no clue whatsoever how bad his “injury” is.

  79. dave May 15th, 2009 at 1:14 am

I hope Girardi is right but as the saying goes, the momentum is only as good as tomorrow’s starting pitcher. Looking at Hughes struggles last time out, its hard to be completely optimistic. At this point, he is basically fighting to stay in the majors and even with a brillian outing probably wont even stick around but if phil has ever wanted to prove something in his life, now is the time to do it. I know he is still young but he has been with the organization for quite a while and dominated at every level. He has shown flashes of brilliance in the majors as well but never over a period of time. Tomorrow is another nice shot for hughes to prove that he isnt just that kid we will be talking about 20 years from now that had so much potential but we cant recall his name. And i dont think that will be his career either – hughes has the talent to be at the top of any major league rotation and it would be nice to see some of that tomorrow night. Liriano has sucked this year so we should be able to get some offense going for him.

  80. Joe Mama May 15th, 2009 at 1:14 am

If Wang pitches well in his next start Hughes should go back to scranton. Aceves should be able to pick up the slack tomorrow if Hughes struggles

  81. Brandon aka MotherLover "It would be my honor to be your new stepfaaaaaaather" May 15th, 2009 at 1:15 am

    Giants getting waxed this inning.

  82. Orestas May 15th, 2009 at 1:16 am

Hope Wang comes back strong, then AJ will be our only question mark every 5th day

CC is locked in, Andy is Andy, Joba is getting better each start (though he has to eliminate the 1st inning woes).

Once we get Wang back, we’re ready for a run

  83. m May 15th, 2009 at 1:16 am

Win or lose, Phil’s time is short. Wang will hopefully be back soon. Gotta go to Lowe’s and get that sink first.

  84. Zodiac May 15th, 2009 at 1:17 am

Can you please point out the comment that you are referring to because I am looking for it and I can’t find it.

Someone did say that Swish has been hitting .160 for over a month. Is this what you are referencing? I don’t know if it’s true or not but he has been hitting .100 for May. It’s not implausible that this poster is actually correct.

Are you that twisted that you have to negatively embellish other comments to make your own seem stronger? I mean your comments aren’t really anything except searching out flaws in other comments and bashing them.

You add nothing and are boring.

    Molina got a double?

I thought Brandon put him on the DL.

Watch out for Liriano tomorrow, still has nasty stuff and can put together a 10K performance anyday now. Just like Verlander, a talented starter can find it at any time

Hughes needs to be on top of his game

  94. Al May 15th, 2009 at 1:26 am

Who is that guy who looks like Prince Fielder playing 3rd?

  95. igotid88 May 15th, 2009 at 1:26 am

    Alright Phil Hughes pitches tomorrow.

  96. Betsy May 15th, 2009 at 1:28 am

Ok, Ray – be a pollyanna, that’s your right. You might want to stop picking on ME, when I know I have not been the only one to say that Jeter should go on the DL. Wow, I don’t have confidence in Phil tomorrow – excuse me for having an opinion.

M, thanks for posting that link. Cervelli is doing a great job, especially in handling the pitchers – I wonder if he’ll catch Phil tomorrow.

Going to be tough for Cano to make the All-Star team

Aaron Hill, Pedroia, and Kinsler are all lighting it up too

  100. AJ YANKS May 15th, 2009 at 1:35 am

One thing about the Twins is that their starters walk nobody

    Blackburn – 11 walks in 41 innings
    Baker – 5 walks in 27.2 innings
    Perkins – 12 walks in 46 innings
    Slowey – 4 walks in 40 innings

So guys have to swing the bat. Teix/Swisher/Gardner etc. can’t just expect to walk and take good strike 3s.

Didn’t Cervelli catch Phil last time?

  104. Pat M May 15th, 2009 at 1:48 am

Betsy, Phil bounces back tomorrow..He’s had 4 days to digest what went wrong…..Seeing eye ground balls are part of the game….However having four 0-2 counts and not converting an out is not….He’s young and is still learning his craft…..How many here at age 22 knew everything there is about their professions…..

  105. Betsy May 15th, 2009 at 1:48 am

Nick, you’re right……lol. Oops – in any case, I guess it doesn’t really matter. Phil just needs to pitch better, regardless of who’s catching.

  106. NYYanksFan May 15th, 2009 at 1:49 am

“Nick Swisher, tells a story about being phoned by A-Rod after the Yankees acquired him from Chicago. “He was the only dude to call me. You come over to the Yankees, you don’t know what to expect. And I get this call from Alex and that meant a lot to me. I thought, this guy is going through all this stuff, and yet he’s still taking the time to call me. I thought that was pretty cool.”

  107. m May 15th, 2009 at 1:52 am

Alex had a cool quote about the guys telling him about “our new home”. It was so cheesy. And cute.

I hope the NYS fans give Alex a break, as he’s not 100% yet.

I bet Alex gets out there early for batting practice.

  108. Nick in SF May 15th, 2009 at 1:55 am

I am squarely in the “Phil will do better” camp and I’m really not worried about him stinking up another game. it might not be a repeat of the Detroit start, but it won’t be Baltimore either. What’s in between Detroit and Baltimore but closer to Detroit? We’ll hope for Toledo and settle for Cleveland. Worst case scenario? Pittsburgh.

  109. Bronx Jeers May 15th, 2009 at 1:57 am

Phil’s never faced Minny so hopefully that works in his favor.

I guess they could have skipped him as it’s Joba’s 5th day but that’s not really helping him is it.

  110. Bronx Jeers May 15th, 2009 at 2:01 am

Hey Phil’s got a 1.50 ERA in Cleveland. I’ll take that.

  111. Joe Mama May 15th, 2009 at 2:01 am

I’m pretty sure Hughes didn’t pitch on regular rest last time out so that may have contributed to the poor outing. Hughes pitched great against the Tigers and fought with the Sox. The twins have been on a roll lately but if the Yankees can put up a few runs against Liriano early it should be a close game

  112. Pat M May 15th, 2009 at 2:06 am

Twins are of course a very sound and well managed ballteam, as they do everything well and dodn’t beat themselves….Lirano really doesn;t throw his slider much since his return from surgery…He has been running his pitch counts up, so maybe we’ll be getting first pitch shots at him as he doesn’t like to pitch from behind….Make no mistake he’s still real good….

  113. Giuseppe Franco May 15th, 2009 at 2:14 am

Over the past 6-7 years, the Yanks have owned the Twins in NY so hopefully things will carry over to the new yard.

The Twins were 3-19 at the old Stadium from ’02 to ’08.

Kind of hard to believe considering that Minnesota has been a pretty damn good team over the last 8 years or so.

  114. Betsy May 15th, 2009 at 2:15 am

Pat, I agree – that’s why I’m still the head of the Phil Phan club……..I really don’t want to be too negative, though. The Yankees just took 2/3 on the road from the top dog on their division – that’s big. Thus far, they really haven’t been able to build upon success – I’m hoping they can do that with this next series.

  115. Pat M May 15th, 2009 at 2:18 am

Betsy, they just need to get through one strong spin thru the rotation and it’ll take off from there….We’ve come close before, but just could not sustain it through all 5 guys….

  116. stuart May 15th, 2009 at 2:18 am

det x 2 at 12:33 he said for over a month my bad. still a inaccurate and ludicrous statement. they have be playing for about 5 weeks…..

    look it up..

  117. igotid88 May 15th, 2009 at 2:19 am

The Yankees also need to give Phil some run support. Although they did give him a 10 spot in his first start. But that was after being shut out for 6 innings. And also play better defense than the last 2 starts.

  118. stuart May 15th, 2009 at 2:21 am

may is 14 days old. swisher has been in a slupm for less then 2 weeks and carried the yanks the first 3 weeks or so of the season. i like people
to be accurate, maybe that is boring.

swisher strikes out a ton obviously that is who he is he also walks a ton…

  119. m May 15th, 2009 at 2:23 am

Toronto’s played 6 games within the division. No other AL East team has played less than 19 games in the division.

  120. Kevin S. May 15th, 2009 at 2:24 am

Yep. 16th in BB%, 8th in K% among qualified MLB players.

  121. m May 15th, 2009 at 2:25 am

    i got id,

Ewww. The defense was putrid in Phil’s last start.

  122. Nick in SF May 15th, 2009 at 2:32 am

Master Philip must play tough. No more delicate flowers on the mound.

  123. E-gawa May 15th, 2009 at 2:38 am

    Stuart,

Try looking up stats. You’re on the internet. You have no excuses. I know you’re slow and like to call people morons and idiots to try and feel smarter but it doesn’t work to well..

Nick Swisher has played in 33 games this season.. In his last 23 games (77AB’s) he’s hitting .187.

His hot streak was the first 10 games of the season.

  124. Kevin S. May 15th, 2009 at 2:43 am

E-gawa, that’s not entirely true. Within those last 23 games, he had another hot streak. Not as long as the first, but awesome enough for my opponent in fantasy baseball to curse him. The week leading up to him getting plunked on the elbow, he went 6/14 with 3 HR, 8 R, 6 RsBI, and 4 BB, good for a 1.650 OPS.

  125. m May 15th, 2009 at 2:46 am

Wow. Even Lupica or Matthews or Sherman could do a hatchet job this bad. About the only objective thing in the preview is the list of Yankee injuries. Beware, it’ll make you want to gouge your eyes out. I hope we take all four games, so the Minny beat writers can ask the players how they like the New Yankee Stadium.

  126. E-gawa May 15th, 2009 at 2:47 am

    Kevin S.

That was 3 games against Detroit.

  127. m May 15th, 2009 at 2:47 am

  128. E-gawa May 15th, 2009 at 2:48 am

*4 games.. 1 game against LAA.

    Undefeated home stand coming up

  130. Kevin S. May 15th, 2009 at 3:44 am

The point is it’s not really right to just make a blanket statement about those 23 games, when they’ve hardly been uniform, and an event occurred in the middle that appears to have adversely affected his production.

  131. NYYanksFan May 15th, 2009 at 3:47 am

Power outage. 30 of Abreu’s 35 hits this year are singles and he has yet to hit a HR.

  132. JeterJobaFan May 15th, 2009 at 5:58 am

Regarding Abreu – he was at 301 yesterday with 13 stolen bases. There is no doubt his steady bat including singles, would have helped the Yankees and how many times would a single have scored a run in April and early May. Face it Mgnt. made a mistake.

Great win today altho I did not see it. CC is the man, kudos also to Jeter and Matsui for their timely hits. And Damon is just the hottest bat in MLB. They may be veterans but can still be clutch. A good mixture of vets and the kids – let’s keep it up!!

And why was Melky not in the game?? He has the highest batting average on the team currently. Swisher, tho we all love him, is not producing at the plate. And just because Brett hit his first homer he gets CF back? C’mon Girardi, now is not the time to play favorites. And speaking of favorites how many chances does Phil get? He doesn’t have it. The team is beginning to gell – they don’t need a terrible outing from Phil at this point. Mussina was skipped in the rotation when he was having his problems a couple of years ago. Whatever.

    GO YANKEES. Keeping winning!

  133. Kevin S. May 15th, 2009 at 6:24 am

Mgmt. most certainly did not make a mistake Re: letting Abreu walk. So far, Abreu’s posted 0.8 WAR to Swish’s 1.0… they’ve provided approximately the same value, but Swisher is both younger and cheaper than anybody could have reasonably expected Abreu to go for when they made the move. Even assuming that they finish out the season even in value, what would you want for ’10-’11, Swisher in his age 29 and 30 seasons, or Abreu in his age 36 and 37 seasons? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

  134. Brian in 702 May 15th, 2009 at 6:38 am

just win 2 out of every three!

  135. JeterJobaFan May 15th, 2009 at 7:36 am

Kevin, It appears that I did not get my post across about Bobby. My point was that they could have used him this year during April and May. His stats last year were good, .300, 100 RBI’s, worked the pitchers etc. Most of us Bobby Abreu fans all miss him but know because of age they had to let him go.

My point is that during the rough games in April and May his steady bat would have helped out. Who would you prefer in the 3 hole, Bobby or Tex AT THAT TIME? Not in 2010 or 2011. Don’t get so huffy, everyone is entitled to her/his opinion.

I admire Tex greatly and have best wishes that he will start making contact soon. I even picked him for MVP. So don’t give me all this verbage. Swisher might not be playing when Nady returns. And Melky with his batting average needs to be in the game. If Gardner plays center, Melky should be playing right. And who is going to move Damon right now?

  136. Angel - A tale told by idiots - full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. May 15th, 2009 at 9:01 am

Read through the game thread. Gary G, hope you keep coming back. Hopefully, those that are giving you a hard time will back off. Hate it when Yankee fans are treated worse than Red Sox fans.

(I know they’re lame, but those winky emoticons go a long way of letting people know when you’re joking)
    ****************************************************

You’ve got to be kidding me!

If he was joking, then I’m Ronald McDonald.

Some Yankee fans are more idiotic than Red Sox fans, and quite honestly deserve what they get.
