Take a good look, it’ll be gone soon

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 14, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Remember that scene in Animal House when Dean Wormer closed Delta House and the boys were standing on the lawn looking shocked as the movers cleaned the place out?

That’s sort of how I picture Yankee Stadium these days. Man, it’s going to be depressing to see them take that place down.

The nice folks from WCBS.com sent along this photo, and here’s a link to a gallery.

You summed it up perfectly, Pete.

Depressing as all hell. It’s really amazing to me to think that the Stadium really is no more. Yeah, yeah– get over it, I know. But still, what a treasure and now look at this tribute to opulence and greed that we have. Makes me sick sometimes.

    BASTARDS!!! GREEDY BASTARDS!!!

Seeing those seats removed made me feel like I got punched in the stomach.

  5. Slu May 14th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

I liked the new stadium when I was there, but this still bothers me. I know the new stadium was needed, but the Yankees could not have handled it worse.

  6. Guy Incognito May 14th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Hoover: They confiscated everything. Even the stuff we didn’t steal.

Bluto: They took the bar! The whole f***ing bar!

  7. kingcora May 14th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Bruce is in Albany tonight Pete – you still have time to make it!

  8. Coach6423 May 14th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

THEY TOOK THE BAR….THE WHOLE F’ING BAR!!!!

  9. m May 14th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

The stuff they’re hauling away doesn’t mean as much as the pre-renovation stuff imo.

When the shell is demolished? That’ll be a different story. Will probably be a lot of sadness associated with that.

  10. Mike in Harrisburg May 14th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

I’m off to chug a bottle of JD.

  11. Coach6423 May 14th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

That was actually the last section I watched a game in. Great day. I got to take my dad for fathers day. Something ill always remember.

  12. Jason May 14th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Does anybody know if the bat is still in front of the old place????

  13. Mike in Harrisburg May 14th, 2009 at 12:59 pm

    Jason

I think it is (or at least was as of a week ago) but doesn’t look like a bat anymore.

  14. Bronx Jeers May 14th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I actually sat right on that wall overlooking that ramp for a Yankee-Met game years ago.

It was a Sunday afternoon make up game for a rained out Fri nighter. 1st game of a doubleheader. Contreras’ wife had just arrived from Cuba and he pitched great. I remember thinking that he may finally get it together. Matsui hit a grand slam that landed in that alley.

The seats are going for 1,500 a pair? That’s the only thing I would even want but they’re not even the originals anyway.

Still they would be a cool addition to a rec room or a bar.

  15. S.o.S. May 14th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

So im looking at this years movies that are out or coming out. It seems like the biggest movies scheduled release dates were too close to one another.

Which movie ends up making the most money in the box office?

    Monster vs. Aliens
    Wolverine
    Star Trek
    Terminator
    Transformers
    Night at the Museum
    ????

    My guess would be Transformers.

  16. Wayne May 14th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

With all due respect Pete, I’d think you’d be taking pleasure in this given your general antagonism toward the team. I suppose your professional relationship with the building probably wins out here. It’s certainly sad to watch the place be dismantled.

  17. hokiehill May 14th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

S.o.S, I’ll put my money on Transformers, although Star Trek has cleaned up…

  18. john May 14th, 2009 at 1:07 pm

They just don’t build stadiums like that anymore. so sad

  19. S.o.S. May 14th, 2009 at 1:07 pm

They should exchange outfield walls to decrease homeruns and fan interferance.

  20. Uncle Ellsworth (Let's All Go To The Mall) May 14th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

I think the Yankees hit way too many doubles and triples last night!

has Aceves earned a spot in the “reliable” column?

  21. ANSKY May 14th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Was that pic taken from the CN tower too, Pete? :P

  22. Laura - There's nothing you have that I need, I can breathe! May 14th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Where’s Nick in SF? I wanted to see if last night’s LOST made his head hurt as much as it did mine.

  23. S.o.S. May 14th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

    Hokiehill,
Star Trek is cleaning up but it came out to close to the Wolverine release. So Wolverine is still making good money that could have gone also to Star Trek. Plus Terminator is coming out next week so it will slow both down. Thats why i think Transformers will make a killing. I dont think it has much competition on its release date.

  24. Jake May 14th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I wish we could still play in the old, majestic YS… not the House that Greed built.

  25. m May 14th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

    Uncle,

In his short time with the Yankees, Aceves has proven himself to be very reliable. Aggressive, throws strikes, gets outs. As a starter, you’d look at his pitch count in the 6th/7th and see 89 or something.

I believe this was the first winter that he didn’t play, maybe that explains his slow start? Aceves was a great pickup.

  28. m May 14th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Okay, you guys seem to know your flix, so I’m going to ask a realy stupid question.

The original Terminator had the ugly actress Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor right? And the new Terminator has the ranting, raving Patrick Bateman as John Connor. Son of Sarah Connor all grown up?

  29. Uncle Ellsworth (Let's All Go To The Mall) May 14th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

  31. Uncle Ellsworth (Let's All Go To The Mall) May 14th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

    m yes
that is John Connor all grows up.

Never thought of Sarah Connor as ugly though – to each his own.

    I’ll be back.

  32. saucy May 14th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

    sos, i’ll pick Star Trek

  33. Uncle Ellsworth (Let's All Go To The Mall) May 14th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

    who has seen Star trek?

    How good is it???

  34. vin May 14th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

“Where’s Nick in SF? I wanted to see if last night’s LOST made his head hurt as much as it did mine.”

Did you like it, Laura? Don’t spoil it, I’m going to watch it on the DVR tonight. I did catch the first 1/2 hour – was cool to finally see Jacob.

  35. ANSKY May 14th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

    M –

Yes that’s the grown up John Connor.

And ugly actress Linda Hamilton worked out like a madman (so to speak) for her part in Terminator 2 – Judgement Day.
Unfortunately for her, although I’m sure she made a TON of money on the T movies, all that working out could only make her hot from the neck down.

  36. Bronx Jeers May 14th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Could Lolo Jones be their new sqirrel?

  37. m May 14th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    Uncle,

Okay, ‘ugly’ was a little harsh. She just had that bodybuilder look. Bet Alex thought she was real purdy. :)

  38. ANSKY May 14th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Actually she didn’t look that bad. Not stunning either, but her average-to-nice-girl looks were important to the role of an average gal who hooks up with a guy sent back from the future and accidentally spawns the savior of the world.

  39. S.o.S. May 14th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

I think the old Sarah Connor in the streets i came from was called a BUTTER FACE. Everythings good but her face.

  40. ANSKY May 14th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Lolo Jones could be my squirrel any day. Or night.

I’ve only seen him pitch in one game thos year, but, he is an interesting project. He’s been in the system for nearly 5 years now. The game that I saw of him, he only pitched in relief (2.2 innings) but no walks and 5 strikeouts. Good fastball and breaking pitches, but, the command is his best asset. He still has to live down that steroid issue.

  53. Bill May 14th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I’d like to see Lolo Jones and Brett Gardner race.

  54. m May 14th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Watching highlights from last night’s game and I’m stunned at how empty the stands were.

I know the economy has a lot to do with the empty stadiums, so I won’t say anything about other teams.

But what I cannot get is the heat the Yankees get. Yes, criticism was warranted re: overpricing, but espn and the AP just couldn’t shut up about how empty NYS was to start the season.

Other teams would kill to have their stadiums as “empty” as NYS.

  55. Stephen May 14th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

    m:
But Toronto’s isn’t a brand-new stadium. It was PACKED every night when it first opened.

  56. jennifer May 14th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

mel- and the previous night it was jam packed. I guess everyone wanted to go and boo AJ.

  57. m May 14th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Thanks, looks like he’s opening up some eyes.

The PEDs thing? Just a blemish and in the past. It’s not like he’s Roger Clemens or anything. ;)

Pretty much Philip Hughes but dominican, he’s not Nova or Jairo. From early reports he can touch mid 90′s IDK much about him either GB I was hoping you would.

  59. stuart a May 14th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

    m,

people love to rip the yanks it is a cottage industry. again they lead baseball in attendance so far…you would never know from watching nespn……

so lon trost and randy levine are out of touch rich guys, shocking… how naive are you all??

some adult with a brain will have to fix the PR mess with the moat and by next year the insane ticket prices will be modified, else they are even dumber then I think….

  60. stuart a May 14th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

toronto had 43 k the first night. if that is jam packed that is every game at yankee stadium…

toronto many years ago drew 4 mill i think for a few years in the gaston glory days….

  61. m May 14th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

    Stephen,

Well, every team gets to use the “it’s the economy” excuse except the Yankees.

Have the mets been selling out their new stadium? (IDK)

The Blue Jays have the best record in the AL. The marlins were the hottest team to start the season. Lame if you ask me.

People need to leave the Yankees and their fanbase alone. :)

  62. DocBooch May 14th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Star Trek was awesome..non stop action, campy and a lot of patronage to the original series. They made it in away where they can start a whole new franchise too. I’d like to say it will be this summers winner but the release time is going to hurt it.

  63. GreenBeret7 May 14th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Brandon, not much more that I could say. I prefer to not give what the reports say. He looked good in that one game, but, it was just the one game. More interesting will be whether he stsys as a starter or whether they put him back in the bullpen. Right now, they’re just trying to build the innings. Thought it was great that he was only at 67 pitches last night, though. Like I said, his control looks like it will determine his future.

  65. m May 14th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Pete Rose told Dan Patrick that he’d put A-rod in the HOF. Of course, Rose would love to relax the requirements!

  66. pat May 14th, 2009 at 2:07 pm

Unless Rose has a HOF vote, who cares what he says?

  67. ANSKY May 14th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

    Bill

It would surprise me if Lolo Jones could catch Gardner unless he were to let her, which I’m sure he’d do if he’s smart. ;)

It would be close, but I think he’d win a sprint by just a little bit. No innuendo intended by that, BTW.

  68. Brandon aka MotherLover "It would be my honor to be your new stepfaaaaaaather" May 14th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Oh, pishaw to your bellyaching about the Legends Seats!

  70. Bill May 14th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

It would be interesting if MLB had a “Fastest Man” competition at the ASG, like the HR contest. Could have 2 categories, home to first and circle the bases. Here’s a few players I’d like to see run: Gardner, Crawford, both Uptons, Gomez and Span of the Twins, Tavares (Reds?)Anybody else?

  71. The Skipper May 14th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

mets and yankee attendance are down so is almost every team except the sux(Very small park) the phillies and maybe 1 or 2 other teams.

again the yanks lead the league in attendance so far. so there complaints are like bill gates lost 25 bill dollars last year so he is the biggest loser of wealth, this may be true but he still is the richest guy in the world…this is an analogy not factual on gates and his wealth..

  75. pat May 14th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

For $1600, you can attend a meet and greet with Jeter and Swisher.

  77. Gary G. May 14th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

This is quite depressing. I’ve seen many great games in that stadium.

I would like to point out that I attended Columbia not on my father’s dime but by taking out loans and receiving grants/merit-based scholarships. I grew up very poor.

Never get disheartened, you too can attend college.

  78. Steve B. May 14th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Should probably put Ellsbury in that group, Bill. Reyes too. And if we’re going to include Gardner, we should also include Joey Gathright (sp?).

Gomez is the fastest of them though, IMO.

  79. m May 14th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Was melky at first or second on BG’s homerun? He caught up to melky just before third. :)

  80. Bill May 14th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Good additions to the “Fastest Man” competition! You always hear announcers say so and so is one of the fastest guys in baseball. It’d be interesting to see how they really match up!

  81. 3 for 30!!!! May 14th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

“For $1600, you can attend a meet and greet with Jeter and Swisher.”

For $2,000 they’ll keep Swisher away and you can just meet Jeter.

  82. Mike May 14th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

I really wish they would have just made a few changes to the old Stadium. Boston does it every year, why couldn’t the Yankees? I would have been perfectly satisfied if they moved the frieze back up to the original spot of the old stadium in the off-season and never built that monstrosity we now have to watch games at across the street. After all, the only thing that really catches my attention at the new place is the frieze, everything else has been a let down.

  83. Tom Tresh 15 May 14th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

  85. trisha - Brett Tomko, an idea whose time has come! May 14th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Since it’s now vogue for the Yankee organization to act as everyone’s toilet, in the name of fairness I thought I’d post what appears to be the real story behind the NYU graduation.

“The score at New York University’s graduation exercises Wednesday, held in the new Yankee Stadium: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton one, student base runners zero.
Last year, the university’s commencement exercises in the old Yankee Stadium were punctuated by an impromptu running of the bases by a pantsless graduate, Will Lopez.

    Not this year.

With the new stadium’s premium seats behind home plate kept empty to serve as a kind of moat between students and field – and some 25 city cops lining the infield – there were no surprises at this year’s 177th commencement exercises for NYU.”

Things aren’t always what they seem now are they? I would think Pete would want to consider another thread posting the real deal and maybe even offer some kind of apology to the Yankee organization for the unwarranted shots.

  86. Patrick from CT May 14th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

I’m actually not all that sad to see the old stadium go. I’m not old enough to have gone before the remodel or I might feel a little differently. The new stadium is an amazing new building. I’ve been to 10 or 11 major league ball parks and the new stadium is about as good as it gets. I’m hopeful they’ll get all the kinks worked out including allowing the regular folks down to the field boxes. Fenway is a dump and in my opinon should also be replaced.

  87. pat May 14th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

How Wang landed on the DL. If the hip weakness really is Wang’s issue, how long would it have taken them to come up with a diagnosis if Alex wasn’t rehabbing in Tampa?

Hey Howell, since you can afford to buy Yankee Stadium as opposed to Gary G. who can merely afford a seat behind home plate, from which he will laugh and wave at the rest of us, I have a question for you.

Do you like your french fries with gravy or vinegar? Or something else?

    Thanks Howell!

Did anyone notice that the guy we are facing tonight looks like an 80′s porn star?

“Well, every team gets to use the “it’s the economy” excuse except the Yankees.

Have the mets been selling out their new stadium? (IDK)”

No, yesterday’s crowd was apparently the biggest since opening day at Citi Field. That was according to the Associated Press.

Up until I checked the blog a few minutes ago, I’d been successful in avoiding seeing any pictures of the slow demolition of the old stadium. Thanks. Now I hate the new place even more….

“Did you like it, Laura? Don’t spoil it, I’m going to watch it on the DVR tonight. I did catch the first 1/2 hour – was cool to finally see Jacob.”

Sorry to respond so late, vin. Yes, I did like it. It made you wish that it was January 2010.

Sad to see the old girl go, they should have played there another eighty some odd years.

And regarding Linda Hamilton, she was far from ugly. I loved Linda Hamilton growing up. Tough crowd.

I reckon so, Ellie. They go into Chez Pierre’s for dinner and order vichy swa for $15.00 a bowl because they can. Go into any diner or truck stop and order cold tater soup and they’ll think you’re nuts. You can can get it, though…for a buck. Who’s smarter?

    Gardner’s “trot” is pretty fast.

Did you see the Reds Adam Rosales’ HR “trot” this week? It was like someone was chasing him!

  104. m May 14th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Grrr@ mlb.tv. Giving me trouble. Wanted to watch Bard yesterday. No dice. Trying to watch this pitcher’s dual between Billingsly & Hamels. No luck.

Following on Gameday, though. Billingsley failed to move guys over with his sac bunt. Hamels got out of trouble.

Then Billingsly walks the leadoff batter Ruiz, Hamels missed bunt attempt, foul bunt, takes two balls, and then gets on base with a pitcher’s throwing error on his sac bunt attempt. And then Rollins strikes out! But Ruiz goes to third on a pickoff attempt error by the catcher.

first and third with one out and Victorino at the plate. Gameday taking long time. Grrr @ mlb.tv.

Both of his home run trots were finished in under 16 seconds.

No wonder. Victorino strikes out on the 8th pitch of the at-bat and Ruiz was caught stealing at home.

That picture hurts like crazy. I never sat in that particular area, but I’ve seen it 50 million times. To see it go…:/

Pretty cool if it was Lolo Jones, that. ;)

Actually, they should fix up Yankee Stadium while they are at Steinbrenner Plaza and just get back into the Real Yankee Stadium asap.

This new park is a joke.

  111. GMAN May 14th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Lolo Jones has had to overcome a great deal of personal adversity in her life. Her story is very inspirational and she is phenominal U.S. Olympian.

About the lack of fact checking…

Newspapers are folding (a little pun there)…losing money. Blogs really aren’t a huge revenue generator either.

Fact checking is expensive and requires lots of resources…time and money…

  113. Anthony May 15th, 2009 at 10:16 am

so let me get this straight…if they are selling all of the seats in pairs, and there were about 57,000 seats in the stadium…

…they stand to make about 43 million dollars on their sales?

    jee-sus.
