The Yankees need to send a scout to see this kid.

Ryan Pennell of Rye Neck HS in Westchester struck out 21 yesterday in a seven-inning game. The 6-foot-3 lefty had two get 23 outs in the game because two of the strikeout victims reached when the ball got away from his catcher.

Pennell is 7-0 with a 0.29 ERA with 112 strikeouts in 49 innings. Josh Thomson had the story in the paper this morning.

Jeez. Why are they wasting this kid as a starter?

o/t but here’s an article about Papi. The quote’s not there, but Ortiz is pretty jaded about his struggles. He’s convinced that we’re all convinced that he’s struggling because he’s off steroids. He’s also convinced that people will assume that WHEN (not if) he turns it around, people will assume he’s back on the juice.

When you read Bryant’s article, you almost feel sorry for falsely accusing (in your mind) Ortiz of PED use. But then you remember that Ortiz is the one that conveniently mentioned the protein shakes that he refuses to drink anymore.

Read the article and see if you believe Ortiz’s story. He says that the Red Sox believed in him, while the Twins preferred to keep minky’s glove (and weak bat) in the lineup (minky!).

And did Ortiz’s physique not change? And rather dramatically?

    He is only a Junior…

    Yay, Westchester!!!

Unfortunately, if he is that good…the Yanks will never wiff him until he leaves as a free agent for whatever team he signs from. Not getting noticed in NY would be like not seeing the sun on a cloudless day.

I saw that kid pitch as a freshman.

David Ortiz has a lower SLG% & OPS than Ramiro Pena (and by a significant margin). Ortiz looked shot last October, and nothing to this point refutes that.

on a completely different note: I have not been able to get “You’ll Never Find” out of my head since Pete posted that Angel Berroa/Lou Rawls bit. Curse you, Pete!

    Cool story.

I just wonder if Big Poopi’s rapid decline isn’t in some way related to that steroid using Manny leaving, and now David doesn’t have a supplier.
