Cashman on Wang and Bruney
Via Chad Jennings, here is what Brian Cashman said about the two rehabbing righties in Scranton:
On Wang: “Performance-wise he was terrific. This was a much better hitting club. Columbus is a much better offensive club than the team he was facing last time, but his stuff was better last time to be honest. Although he performed great in both outings, he didn’t have the slider that he had last time. His changeup was better today than last time. His fastball velocity was a little bit lower this time than it was last time.
“At the same time, he handled the lineup and got a lot of groundballs. Facing guys like (Travis) Hafner kind of tells you a little something you want to know. I know Hafner is on a rehab assignment and he’s a guy who can really do some damage if you’re making mistakes, not making some pitches, and he made his pitches. That tells you a lot.
“What you’d love to see are all pitches working at optimal levels, but that’s not always realistic. Obviously the most important thing is performance and he has performed in his two starts here, there’s no doubt about that.”
“Ultimately, with him, as long as he’s getting sink, he can pitch and be successful, there’s no doubt about that. And he feels good about himself. I had a chance to talk to him in the trainer’s room, so these are two trips well worthwhile for me. Our team is winning in New York and we are getting closer to being healthy and adding guys like a Bruney and a Wang and that’s a great thing for us.”
On Bruney: “He looked healthy, which is the biggest thing for him. Unlike Wang, he’s coming off of an elbow injury, so you want to see health, and I saw health.”

Leave Wang at SWB until his velocity returns.
Wang needs another start or two down there……….Bruney’s health is the most important thing, I don’t care how he performed. That said, he’s rusty, so let him work his rust off in AAA. Why rush him back to NY when, if he’s struggling, he’ll get tattooed in games that count?
I want Wang in the big leagues again, He’s a good competitor and deserves alot of credit for the workload he handled in the past two seasons.
But I think One more start in minors might help his sinker and strengthen him up a little more.
I agree Richie. On the flip side a few more starts in the Bronx can help Hughes.
I don’t read that as Wang is ready to come back yet. I would wait until they play in Cleveland on the 29th to get him back into the rotation.
make that the 30th, Sabathia is lined up for the 29th in his former home park.
Relief pitchers don’t need a lot of time because they don’t pitch with the same frequency, and throw a number of different pitches, as starters.
If Bruney is healthy, they can activate him Tuesday and he should be ok to go.
They will probably wait until they see how he feels tomorrow before making a decision on him.
Wang? In decoding “Cashman Speak”, he is riding a fine line here.
That kids confidence went right down the drain after he got shelled this season. Building him back is as much mental as it is mechanical right now.
It looks like Cashman is trying to give him a boost re: the results, while also being honest about his stuff. That’s walking a fine line.
It wouldn’t hurt Wang to have one more start in AAA. Its not like he can replace Hughes in the rotation Wednesday night.
Pitch Friday night in AAA and if that outing goes well, bring him back to NY. Seems like the most plausible plan to me.
He can only be on a MiLB Rehab Assignment for 30 days anyway. If Cash thinks he needs another start down there who am I to argue?
how is wang going to replace hughes if they are a couple days off b/w starts…are you just going to have to pitch wang a couple days long
“Pitch Friday night in AAA and if that outing goes well, bring him back to NY. Seems like the most plausible plan to me.”
——
SJ44,
but if Wang’s stuff isnt where it should be and he gets shelled again, his confidence is toast.
I’d prefer to give him 2 more starts and wait until Cashman and the coaches are confident in both the results and his stuff.
Jeff in NJ, ralphieD, SJ – some of us figured it was easier to have a standard tagline than to keep posting names. So we added “OPPC member” to our taglines. If that works for you, feel free to use it!
Seems like Burney will be back soon. Wang, I miss him but don’t rush him. I can live with him having 1(maybe even 2) more start in AAA.
“Jeff in NJ, ralphieD, SJ – some of us figured it was easier to have a standard tagline than to keep posting names. So we added “OPPC member” to our taglines. If that works for you, feel free to use it!”
stop with that crap already
Wang definitely needs another start if his velocity isn’t where it should be. He shouldn’t come up until there’s nothing left for him to improve because if he gets shelled in his first start back, he can’t exactly go back down.
This is also a mental issue, as others have mentioned. Bringing Wang back too early is just setting him up for failure.
I can’t wait for a healthy Wang to be back in action.
Garrett – do you post during games?
Burney=Bruney
Pete – going back a few threads to the ethics of rooting for A-Rod it’s hard to find a stright answer to that one.
My opinion (and that of many) is that there were SO many guys juicing at one point, most of whom who would/will never be caught. Further, every team had someone doing it, some more than others. It’s not a ‘team’ thing though, even if teams did seem to have more than others. There have got to be some surprises (Pettitte) and no-brainers (McGwire) on every team. It’s hard for ANYONE to be sure their favorite player of that era wasn’t ‘enhanced’ in some way. In a way, it gets to the point where it’s hard to ‘ethically’ root for anyone who even played in that era, in case they get ‘outed’ too.
I’d guess that at least half of the guys who have been playing since then are probaly if not certainly OK. Especially without knowing any of them personally, how does one go about weeding out the bad apples? Even then, how sure can you be in half of THOSE cases? Not just some of them, like the guys on the dubious Selena Roberts list or in Canseco’s book. I’m including the ‘Rollo Tomassi’ guys … the guys who did it and got away with it. I would not be surprised if there are more of those than there were positive tests with names attached to them. Significantly more.
There is too gray a gray zone, too foggy a fog zone …. use whatever metaphor you like … to be totally ethical. Or to pick A-Rod (other than being just for example) without picking any of those guys on an equal level.
Wang looked good on Sunday. His velocity was slightly lower than Tuesday — maxed out at 92 mph instead of 93 — but the movement on his sinker was better, and Wang said he was happier with his ability to get ahead in the count and locate his fastball down and in. He faced rehabbing Travis Hafner three times and got two routine groundouts before a bloop, broken-bat single.

Also, it would be nice if Hughes could string together another good start or two before being sent down to the minors. Build his confidence up more.
Facing Baltimore, who hit him hard last time out, will be a huge test for him. I don’t think he has ever pitched well against that team.
Honestly, I do not see them rushing Wang up – at least one more minor league start, I’d think.
What happens with Hughes? I do not know that he necessarily gets what he needs in the minors, which is experience pitching with men on base and being able to pitch effectively when his stuff isn’t good. At AAA, it’s not an issue – he’s better than the competition and is not tested enough, it would seem. He’s shown that when he has his best stuff, he is very competitive on the ML level, but when he’s got men on base or his stuff isn’t his best he struggles. This is a dilemma. It will be interesting to see what the do with him. I think it would be good for Hughes to have 2 more ML starts, just as important as Wang getting 2 more minor league starts. Just my opinion.
I hope Bruney comes back the way he was. It will surely be a boost to the pen.
My question is this: last season, the same guys, pretty much, in the bullpen were strike-throwing machines. The Yankees bullpen hardly walked people last season. So what gives this season? Same coaching, same manager, and with the way Girardi always talks about competitors who “pound the strike zone” and start “strike one” that this is what Girardi preached last year and continues to preach this year. So, how do you account for the change? The seeming inabililty to get ahead in the count or, worse, to go 0-2 and then lose the hitter this season?????
About the OPPC – unfortunately, up until the recent winning streak, reading the game threads had become extremely demoralizing. Of course everything that happens during a game is not positive or good. But it seems ridiculous to give up on a player, a team, a game or a season when there is so much baseball left to play.
People should be free to complain about a bad play (like Gardner’s today) without being told they’re being too negative. And that debate didn’t take over an entire game thread, which is what a lot of people object to, I think. And people should be able to be actively encouraging during a game without being told they’re pollyannas.
I think the OPPC is just a way of saying we need more balance here. And, it’s also a way to ensure that some of us who were starting to avoid the game threads come back.
Good one Tom. Thank God I’m still independent.
Besides when the Yankees lose I cuss and break lamps.
If Wang’s confidence is that far gone, do they have to consider trading him to an NL team and bringing Hughes back from Scranton for good?
I’m assuming that’s where Hughes will go when Wang comes back and that Hughes wil begin to bear down more and work through it when he’s in trouble.
Matt Cain walking people left and right here. Bases loaded
Can we stop this group nonsense. Its done more harm than good
I think 1 more start at SWB max for Wang.
Cain you can’t walk the pitcher.
Stop the madness? Those are words I could use around here myself, at times.
Look for me, being a positive poster is not about being Pollyanna. Thats annoying.
It’s not about not being constructively critical when its reasonable to be. Nor is it about stifling conversation of constructive criticism.
Its not about not being able to occasionally express disappointment or frustration when something disappointing happens. We’re fans. We’re invested in this team – so we get frustrated and disappointed at times. Just like we get excited.
Its about stopping the madness of the irrational, hyperbolic pile-ons that go on around here when things aren’t going the way people want. The pile-ons that turn this place into a cesspool and keep people from posting.
Its about people who drive-by with the posts assuming the worst possible outcome for every given situation, and then disappear magically when things are going good.
Its about stopping the madness of posters with multiple names and those that impersonate on to the names of people who are regulars and therefore have some semblance of credibility and use their names to turn this place into a madhouse.
Enough is enough. There can be a balance.
His pitch count is at 50 after 2, but Cain got out of it
lol, your tagline is funny, SA.

Just ignore them, I don’t even read their posts.

LOL That’s a good enough reason for me to keep having it in my name.
Doreen,
What happened to the pen? It’s the unexplainable voliatile nature of bullpens.
Most guys in bullpens are failed starters and have washed out with more than one organization.
They are very erratic. That’s why you try and capture a little luck sometimes with some guys and ride out their hot streaks.
Perhaps Tomko is that guy for the Yankees.
It’s why building a bullpen is so difficult.
Per MLB Rules, the longest Wang can stay in AAA is 30 days.
Forgive me for being a little slow and/or out of the loop, GB … what would T.L.H.C.W.A. be?
I hate cliques almost as much as I hate negative people.
Trisha I appreciate you making me a member of the OPPC but I’m not quite sure I belong.
I’m positive sometimes, negative other times. I can praise and encourage players, but I also rip them when I feel its necessary.
So I guess I should thank you for including me, but I’m not sure I can always post up to expectations.
“I doubt that there’s really a point for it, but, an interesting by-product is that it annoys the whiners, so, that’s a win-win.”

i’d love to see them call bruney up tuesday. i hope he feels healthy enough.
as for wang, the mental part of his game was, in my opinion, as big an issue as, if not bigger than, any physical problems he might have been dealing with. until that kid’s head is right, he doesn’t belong on the mound in a major league ballpark. the last thing this team needs is to run him out there again and watch him get shelled. that doesn’t help anyone.
hughes has been far from great but he’s been a helluva lot better than wang.
i’m of the belief that wang’s injury, along with the hit his confidence took, are going to be much harder to overcome. i don’t expect to see the “same old” wang this year, if ever again. i’m sure he’s a real sweet guy and, as long as he’s in the organization, i wish him nothing but success but he really, really lost it this year and sometimes, there’s no getting it back. hopefully for wang and the yankees, that’s not the case here. but i keep wang at AAA as long as hughes is keeping his team in games. one or two more bad outings from hughes, bring up wang.
SJ44 -
So, was it short-sighted to rely on a majority of the arms from last season in building this season’s pen, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle twice? Well, let’s hope they have amassed enough arms to find something. And perhaps Tomko is that surprise this season.
At some point, given the reliance that most teams have on middle relief, do you think that there will be pitchers who are developed as such? Perhaps guys who have shown they can throw quality pitches but not over the course of 6 or more innings? Seems like it should become a priority, if it isn’t already. I mean, since it’s obvious they are not developing starting pitchers who can go the distance (9 innings) with anything approaching regularity, or even 7 or 8 innings for that matter. The pitchers who do that are few and far between.
If there is a time limit on how long Wang can remain in AAA, I guess that means that he will be here sooner than later, ready or not quite ready.
frankly, this oppc thing seems really odd to me, regardless of who started it or how it got started. i was really taken aback to start reading game threads and see that stuff. it was like being in middle school again. weird. but, to each their own. it’s not hurting anyone, right?
you won’t make the game thread any more positive by forming a clique..
SJ: When you look at the Yankees pen of the late 90′s and the pen now, what is the difference then? I mean, I clearly can see that this pen is extremely weak. But what did the Yankees do back in the day that made their pen their strong point. Just luck and smart acquisitions? The pen problems has been an issue for many years now. I guess it can really go back to the Yankees having such weak starting pitching to where the pen has been wore out.
There is comedy and then there is a halftime interview with Hedo Turkgolu.
Don’t know about that anymore, Kasey. Judging by some of the comments it seems to be annoying/upsetting quite a few people now, lol.
i dont understand why cash doesnt focus his opinion on how the sinker is. He seems like he is avoiding the subject. I know he said sink but he didnt even mention how the sinker looked. It was fastball this and slider that. Who cares? He was getting hammered before because he had been throwing all his pitches way up in the zone and his sinker just wasnt really sinking. Is it now or isnt it?
Wang’s Yankee career has gone the way of the dodo. We saw it happen to Cone and it also happened to Jim Abbot…when he was with the Brewers, perhaps? But this is the end, methinks. He’s been great but more lucky than talented.
Kasey, to each their own is right, but it’s silly to see Trisha write a list of names after every single thing she posts. If you guys can stay positive by forming a clique, enjoy.
Is oppc a “posse”?
Team lookn good for now. Forget Wang, he sounds like he needs a long timer in AAA. As far as Bruney, safety first.
“Can we stop this group nonsense. Its done more harm than good”
i agree 100%
Ok just wondering. I’m not trying to be a villain here. Just was curious
Hey, I’m not a regular poster on this blog, in fact I barley ever post. But I read everyday at least 3 times a day and read the comments just as frequent. So I decided I’d just try and post especially given the topics.
When everyone questioned Wang as an ace he went out and proved to be by winning 19 games, not once, but in back to back seasons. Now that we have CC and AJ and Joba, I would prefer Wang to make 1 or 2 more starts in the minors just so he can come back and show his ace quality stuff again.
Cashman would worry about fixing the bullpen/bench instead of how Wang looks
No its a clique, burt. Just ask anyone.
oppc is cool…this place is too filled with dooms-dayers when the yankees are losing…its rather sad

Christina,
Well said. Nice blog by the way, and great name!
I don’t think the club thing is a bad thing at all.
People may think it’s rather junior high-esque but it’s far better than the elementary-esque whine fest this place becomes when the Yanks are losing.
Fight fire with fire.
If it keeps the morons down to a minimum, it serves it’s purpose.
SJ44-noticed from one of the last threads that you will be heading down my way for the ACC tourney. Just a word of warning, there is major construction on I-85 in Vance County NC (one lane of traffic each way) and the SHP love to pull folks over. They ran a big traffic ticket campaign a few weeks ago and memorial day weekend is a time they are out in force all over the interstate. Best of luck to your nephew, but I will be pulling for my Tar Heels.
You know, everyone who comes here on a regular basis pretty much knows the posters who are going to take a more positive viewpoint. But that point of view was being drowned out during game threads and making it very uncomfortable FOR ME to want to participate. Yet, I enjoy Pete’s updates during the games, and I enjoy much of the give-and-take that goes on during the game. It just was getting harder and harder to scroll through the muck to get to what I wanted to read. If this OPPC simply makes it easier FOR ME to get through a game here, I’m all for it. From what I understand, no one is saying that people who don’t ascribe to that viewpoint can’t post – that would be ridiculous. But FOR ME it is an indication that the type of commentary I’m comfortable with will be here.
And I also think the listing of names was just for today, pretty much, right? Because, in all honesty, I don’t think that’s necessary going forward.
Anyway -
I was away and missed the game with Gardner’s inside the park HR, though I did see it on ESPN’s highlights. I said to my husband that the stadium must have gone nuts, as well as this blog. What was it like as it happened?? On the highlights, Gardner’s speed just looked amazing. I could not believe the length of his strides, as well as how quickly he was able to move his legs!
& I agree with Donald who agrees w/ someone else. Are we 12? we have groups now? you serious? Shut up
Watching the Mets on espn…
The theme of leadership came up…who is the team leader?
The booth concluded that there is no leader. Later the Manager named some players… outed earlier by booth as non-leaders… no surprises, this is the Mets.
But Cut to the Yankees… with Jeter the Captain, and Jorge the enforcer…we know our leaders.
But who are the Yankee Future Leaders?… any signs?
“Can we stop this group nonsense. Its done more harm than good”
Wait until we hook up with “Up With People” and do a Super Bowl Halftime show.
Thanks rconn
The club thing is so funny…why do people care so much about it?
I am optimistic about the Yankees and always have been…but I am very intense while watching a game, which my wife, kids and neighbors could attest to and I will never change…for crying out loud I spend too much time here.
So IMO, some posters are tired of all the trolls/bridge jumpers who post during game threads when they want to talk about decisions/plays made during the game, which is why I don’t comment during those threads and why some have asked for registration.
So when I say get rid of Veras or Edwar or that Girardi may not be the guy for this team…I’m not being negative, even though I am optimistic, I’m just being a baseball fan.
Is pete secretly funding this oppc organization?
So what people who aren’t “regulars” don’t count for anything? People are entitled to their own opinions whether you like what they say or not. But, creating a group because you think certain posters opinions are “real & positive” is a little unfair. Go create a blog for your “clique” if you would only like to hear what they have to say. Not everyones comments are negative
I highly doubt it burt. That would mean he would have to be positive about A-Rod.
On that note, the members of the positive people of america should try to recruit Pete.
I’m wondering if I should start posting under random names agreeing with Angel.
You know just so I have my own posse/clique agreeing with me in response to the posse/clique I object to.
I have a headache from typing that train of thought.
Manny’s teammate is funny
Joe Torre called Manny Ramirez’s meeting with teammates ‘uncomfortable.’
Reliever Will Ohman’s joke to a Daily Telegraph reporter may make things more so.
“For a guy going into his second trimester, he looks great. He’s barely showing.” Ohman joked with Ramirez being linked to a female fertility drug.
http://blogs.nypost.com/sports.....sun_3.html
Tomko & Teixeira saved the day. While Damon deserved the belt, those two are the unsung heroes.
IMO, Giambi could never have made that throw…never mind the stop.
No texfan. Its not about stopping anyone from posting here – at all. It just makes it a little easier to skip over stuff you don’t want to read. A lot of the stuff during games when things are going badly is pointless reading.
The club thingy is fine with me.

When I see that OPPC moniker I cringe.
So is it your attention to only interact with those who are in “the club”? That would be disappointing and dramatically cut down on the jousting that makes this place fun.
If we critcize Pete for criticizing the Yankees is that negative or positive? If we agree with Pete for criticizing the Yankees then what?
Are you guys going to get membership cards? Magic decoder rings? Will there be a secret handshake or language? Who decides who gets in and who decides who gets tossed?

I am glad to see wang dominating AAA, but I would agree with SJ44 in that he should probably get another start (and I wouldn’t be upset if they made him take 2) in AAA to get his head on straight more than to get his fastball up a notch. That is just as important as going from 92-93 to 94-95.
Hughes is learning how to pitch through damage control. He’s not the number 1 we all thought he’d be, but he’s definitely working himself into a good #3. If he and Joba could just learn to be more efficient…
Haven’t the Mets been winning? Did I miss something?
And who in the world would trade Carlos Beltran?
Turn off the volume when watching ESPN Sunday night broadcasts folks. Phillips and Morgan will kill brain cells.
The only thing that would make that booth more illogical would be to add Francesca.

“Irony: starting a group to keep things positive that actually sends the entire place straight into the crapper.”
This “group” is a fly by night fad. It will disappear, just like Pokemon cards.
Sandoval with the bunt lol
David “1st bassman right” botches it

Where you been? This place is already in the crapper. Anything’s better than the way it’s been in here.

I agree with you re: Wang and Hughes. Hughes needs more ML starts, and Wang needs more mL starts.
David Wright seems to be the spokesperson for the Mets – at least it seems so to me – he’s the go-to guy for any information and he always seems to make himself available. To me, that’s part of being a leader – being wiling to talk to the media when no one else wants to. I don’t think Minaya wants him to be the leader, for whatever reason. Or, rather, I think Minaya wishes the leader were someone else – Delgado, I guess?
In any event, Phillips and Morgan spent far, far too much time on the discussion.
ah the fad of Pokemon cards, not nearly as cool as pogs though.
I did call them but then I had to hang up before I could get the scoop. I thought maybe you’d have some inside info. I really wish my brother-in-law would ship me my case

Agreed.
Another balk for Mike, and they don’t call it? That probably would have produced a run.
i’ve been away for a few days.
did i miss anything?
Phillips just ripping Carlos Beltran….How did this chump ever get a gig in Baseball no less a GM position…..Beltran is an elite Centerfielder…
Phillips and Morgan were intensely debating the Mets core like they were on WFAN
Very odd that they did that on a National Broadcast. The rest of the country probably didn’t know what the hell they were talking about lol

He has your case? But won’t send it? That is just wrong.
“The LoHud Cryers and Whiners Association”
Got it, GB.
I hear they have their own militia too. For hand-to-hand combat training they get together under the O’Neill banner for limp-wrist be-yotch slap exercises.
4th balk, 3rd one called.
WTH is up w/ Pelfrey tonight ?
If they loose, wfan will be loads of fun to listen to. From all the walk off wins by the Yanks, to the pieing, to the balks.
fun.
LMAO. Who’s the home plate umpire? Balking Bob Davidson?
Pelfrey looks like he is drunk lol
that should be lose.

LOL First pitch swinging when the guy is struggling and on the ropes
Jennifer: it is very wrong. I didn’t realize how big a case was when I had it shipped to north carolina along with the one I gave them fro Christmas. I haven’t had one in months

Yeah…sad news for you. Poli-Dent announed that they quit making Poli-Dent Denture Adhesive. They said to use Super-Glue.
on a random note, I see that the state of New York is now listing teacher’s salaries online. It’s interesting to see how one mighty music teacher from my old elementary school is making a whopping 102,000 dollars a year. Ridiculous.

I loved those things (pogs). I never could figure out what you were supposed to do with them though… but kids bought em up anyway.

I missed that.

That stadium in SF is gorgeous. One day….
Andy Pettitte vs Glen Perkins tomorrow:
In 2008, Perkins went 12-4 with a 4.41 ERA. He had allowed 183 hits, 25 HR, 39 BB, 74 SO, and opponents were batting .301 against him.
In 2009, he’s started 7 games and is 1-2 with a 4.27 ERA. So far, he’s allowed 22 hits, 4 HR, 12 BB, with 26 SO and opponents are batting .244 against him this year so far. He’s also gone 8 innings in his last three outings allowing 1, 2, and 1 earned runs against Seattle (L), Toronto (no decision) and LAA (W).
Well, I should say the setting is gorgeous.
The Chevron advertisement is pretty tacky, isn’t it?
Phillips basicaly indicarted that Beltran was not worth the money that the Mets are paying him, he’s an underchiever…..Hell the guys a gold glover every seson, hits .300, drives in 100, hits 25 dingers, scores 100, switch hits, steals bases etc…He’s just not a go to guy ??? Phillips is a schmuck
It is a great place to see a game. Tonight was Tim Lincecum bobblehead night, I should have gone

That wasn’t my fault. I’m looking around for someone or something to blame it on.
So I missed Wang’s actual pitching line for today (And Pete didn’t mention it)…Anyone have it handy?

Do you collect non-Yankee bobbleheads?
It’s vs AAA Cle which means pretty much nada
Most important thing is he dropped in velocity from what he had in his last start, sat 90 91 and topped out at 93, he’s still not ready.
Doreen: I am not much of a collector, but I have a few. Only the Yankees get to watch the games
pretty good weekend for the Yanks!

That Chevron ad drove me nuts when I was there. The height of the wall is actually the shape of the car.
You hit the ball to the right of the car – home run.
You hit the ball right at the car – off the fence.
Other than that – a great park. You can actually watch the game for free from behind the RF fence. (like the old knot hole gang) – You can’t stand there all day – it was like 10/15 minutes then move on. Still pretty cool.
Wang should be traded anyways, at a right timing…

Beltran didn’t show enough leadership on that double, they still haven’t scored…
No leadership! Blow up the core!
I do not want Wang up here until he is throwing 94-95 and has a plus slider
What does “OPPC” stand for?
Nice going Orlando. No jinx from Ewing. Whew!

David,
It is a middle school club.
————————————————————
Perhaps you can join when you graduate out of kindergarten.
Brandon is president of the Good Yankee Players Haters Society, but he balances that with his chairmanship of the Island Prospect Huggers Crew.
statwise Wang impressive, velocity and stuff mediocore today.
Brandon-
You really want Wang traded?
MLBTR had this interesting nugget (from Gammons):
The Dodgers, Indians, Yankees, and Twins are looking for relief help. Gammon names Jose Valverde, Huston Street, Danys Baez, Russ Springer, and John Grabow as future trade candidates.
—————-
Huston Street could be had? Wonder for how much?
“Brandon-
You really want Wang traded?”
If the right deal surfaces yes.
The right deal? Ha!
There’s a lot of scuttle but that Wang will be traded before he hit’s free agency. 1) he’s had a bit of an injury history and 2) he’s a contact pitcher and stat lovers don’t like contact pitchers because the statistics just don’t play out that the ball will get hit to an infielder more often than not. 3) He has no out pitch. If his sinker isn’t working, he’s a BP pitcher. So, while historically good, Wang’s future theoretically doesn’t play out. I’d be very interested in seeing if the Yankees change their minds on Wang and sign him long term… but I doubt it.
What’s the right deal?
“The Dodgers, Indians, Yankees, and Twins are looking for relief help. Gammon names Jose Valverde, Huston Street, Danys Baez, Russ Springer, and John Grabow as future trade candidates. ”
None of those guys are anything more than they are. Huston Street isn’t even what he was.
Now if the Yankees want to shore it up they have pieces, give Kansas City a call ask what they want for Joakim Soria, then dangle Nady to SF if you still can, maybe Wilson + Merkin Valdez can be had for him.
I enjoy negative posts in game threads because I don’t believe in jinxing the team by being positive. Also, reverse jinxing can be helpful.
Where would Nady play for SF, he can’t DH there? He most likely won’t be able to play the OF.
i turned on espn last night for 2 minutes and what do i hear?
“The AL East isn’t as tough as everyone thought it was going to be.”
WHAT? lol i guess thats what i get for turning it on to begin with.
anyway i find it amazing how we are only 1.5 games back from the sox even though we’re 0-5 against them this year.
“What’s the right deal?”
A 5 tool player, a stud OF + BP arm. For instance if Oakland calls and asks for Wang and have an offer of Ryan Sweeney + BP help, I’d think about it but Hughes has to beat him out for me even to consider it.
Yes, I think the Giants will definitely trade their all-star closer and another player for Xavier Nady. A great idea.
My work monitors my internet usage, so I don’t post during day games and I have three very young kids so posting during night games is equally difficult. I just post when I can.
“Where would Nady play for SF, he can’t DH there? He most likely won’t be able to play the OF.”
SF is the one team that has showed interest in him, if he returns I doubt he’s just a DH, if not Nady stays on the DL.
Signing out for the evening.
Keep it positive
When Wang is on, he pounds the bottom of the zone with a 92-95 mph sinker what 80% of the time?
all of this blah blah about a changeup he throws once in a while is blah blah.
Pete – is he there yet or not on the sinker?
“Yes, I think the Giants will definitely trade their all-star closer and another player for Xavier Nady. A great idea.”
I see you missed the word “if”
3rd straight walk off win for the yanks AND the celtics go home empty!?!? what a great day
Apparently, from Chad Jennings, he’s got the sink but he’s only sitting at 91-92 not 95. So it’s not his usual “power sinker” – i.e., “hitting a bowling ball” sinker. His mental game tho I think needs another outing or two.
Pat, thanks for the link!
LOL at AJ’s personal stash of whipped cream – nice visual, AJ throwing on his clothes quickly so he could initiate Damon into the club. It’s great that these guys are watching the plays together, cheering their teammates on……….yes, winning breeds chemistry, but these guys really like and support each other.
Yes, Brandon, *if* Brian Sabean eats the funny brownies.
No way a trade like that happens 1) at all and 2) for a Scott Boras rental client coming off a big injury.
Unless you think Nady will be their new closer…?
Jennifer, I live about 30 min from Belmont – it’s a spectacular place – just huge. Are you going to the Belmont?
i cant wait to add bruney… mo bruney coke and soon melancon and robertson along with aceves and pick a reliever…it can work
Personally, I wouldn’t trade Wang if he comes back to his old self and win 15-20 games every season.
It’s not as if Hughes & other prospects are SURE 15-20 game winners
“Yes, Brandon, if Brian Sabean eats the funny brownies.
No way a trade like that happens 1) at all and 2) for a Scott Boras rental client coming off a big injury.”
Like he’s never eaten funny brownies before
SF is the one team that has showed interest in him, if he returns I doubt he’s just a DH, if not Nady stays on the DL.
————————————————————
We really have no idea how many teams were interested in Nady. From what I have read, Nady’s arm won’t be well enough to throw unless he has surgery.
Yeah, but basing a trade fantasy on the other GM being a lunatic doesn’t work too often.
Maybe trade Wang AND Nady in the same package for a superstar
Berroa, Veras, and $$$ for Leo Nunez
“We really have no idea how many teams were interested in Nady. From what I have read, Nady’s arm won’t be well enough to throw unless he has surgery.”
We’re not gonna have 7-10 DHs on this team. That’s certainly not productive.

Who said it was a sure thing, I said call and ask what they would want. Doesn’t hurt in asking what a team like KC would want for CL who’s already had shoulder issues, No ?
Boston Dave,
Artie’s bashing of Gary last week was relentless. Utterly relentless.
We’re not gonna have 7-10 DHs on this team. That’s certainly not productive.

Yeah, I understand that, but that wasn’t what we were discussing. It was fantasy trades you were talking about.
“Yeah, I understand that, but that wasn’t what we were discussing. It was fantasy trades you were talking about.”
It wasn’t brought to my attention that Nady wouldn’t be able to field until tonight. So….
Sometimes “it only hurts when I laugh” and “it doesn’t hurt to call and ask” come into conflict.
Nady will be able to field? Where did you hear that, during the game today?
Francessa is on now
Francesa with cheese doodles in the bowl?
Uh Oh starting with the Mets, get ready for some break up da core talk?
Mikey seems extra cranky
Wang threw very very well ? what report did Fatboy read ?
No pie mentions by Francesser… I guess AJ is safe for now.
“Wang threw very very well ? what report did Fatboy read ?”
prolly saw the box score
I wish i got this show you guys all get. Is this jut a local NYC thing?
Tyler Kepner is calling it a “good day for Wang in Scranton” too
http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/
Well, looks like Joe Mauer is gonna be Francesa’s next crush. I felt the love when he was gushing over him
Everyone bashes Francesca but the fact of the matter is, is that he has become the authority on sports in New York.
I know, sad to say… but its true.
I call him up and argue with him all the time.
Trade Wang?
Please stop huffing gas, it can kill you.
Brandon-
Where did you hear Nady will be able to play the field?
Christina,
This specific one is just a 1\2 hour sports recap show on the local NYC NBC 4. Nothing that special… usually a couple minutes on the Yankees and Mets and some other stuff.
His main show is on YES/WFAN at 1 on weekdays
“Tyler Kepner is calling it a “good day for Wang in Scranton” too”
Srsly what reports are these guys getting, it wasn’t impressive at all, stuff wise he was mediocore, the impressive guy was Bruney in relief, Wang w/ that type of stuff would get knocked around in the AL, god I hope they don’t rush him back.
I don’t think Nady is going to play the field when he comes back, atleast not much. Atleast that’s what I got reading various Cashman/Girardi quotes.
He is a DH when he comes back
Jack: Yeah, I get YES and watch Francesa all the time. I just always hear people talking about his Sunday show and I don’t ever see it on here in the Capital Region.
Thanks though, I figured it must be a local NYC thing.
“Brandon-
Where did you hear Nady will be able to play the field?”
Huh ..no I was assuming he would be able to field, I didn’t pay much attention to X b/c I never viewed him as a longterm option. He’ll be gone after this season.
Dr Cox,
I call him up too and he actually lets me talk most of the time. He cna be brutal to callers though.. I hate that lisa from white plains.
Cash sucks! We seem to be rolling now with reinforcements on the way & the chemistry looks like it is at it’s apex. Did Humberto Sanchez clear through with no claims? It also seems like Brackman is better his last couple of starts. He seems to be learning his trade with every outing. Pete, you are the Greatest!!!!!!!!!!
Hughes’ turn in the rotation after this week is in Texas on Memorial Day, followed by Cleveland on the road as well
Not exactly the softest landing spot for Wang
I can’t stand Lisa from White Plains, srsly it’s like she unbuckles his jeans per call.
I hate that lisa from white plains.
===========================
Gah! Lisa. She’s horrible. She calls both Francesa and Kay, you can’t even escape her. She sounds like she smokes 5 packs a day
Liser from White Stone
Mike from Montclair
Steve the cookey Met fan
Some awful callers
She is terrible and Francesa lets her go on and on forever. I didn’t realize she calls Kays show.. Yuck.
new post
What is Girardi doing leaving the Sr. Citizen on the bench?
He has played 1 inning since May 4th. How can he expect him to remain sharp if he never plays him?
jv, Humberto is back in our system, Branckman is getting more experienced and promising. Gold Mine, exactly plus I think Hughes is starting to hit his stride, If he is to lose a job I want to see him matched up against Wang when he’s in full stride.
Val from Brooklyn-I can never understand a word he says, but he seems like a nice man
I want to make it clear——I meant Kevin Cash!!!!!
If Bruney can come back and be the set up guy, I still think the bullpen can be a strength.
Aceves is a very good option for long relief and Coke is a decent middle reliever. I don’t think they will all turn it around, but between Veras, Marte, Edwar, Melancon, and Tomko they should be able to handle middle relief work with Coke.
Getting Posada back is going to be big too. As good as Cervelli has been, Posada gives the lineup another guy that is going to grind the starter down and extend the lineup.
If Wang can come back and pitch like he is supposed to that will be a big boost to the rotation and the bullpen. When he’s on, he’s a guy you expect to go 7 strong.
As good as this streak has been, they can still be much better.
——>
Lisa from White Plains is annoying…….Francesca spent more time on the Twins tonight than he did on the Yankees..what a surprise. However, should the Yankees lose a few in a row, he’ll find something to say about them then.
“Doesn’t hurt in asking what a team like KC would want for CL who’s already had shoulder issues, No ?”
——
I’d put it on par with calling the Dodgers about Broxton or the Sox about Papelbon. It almost seems like an insult to me to make that call.
Unless of course you ask in such a way that you could laugh and say you were, of course, joking if/when they tell you to piss off… kinda like when I ask a girl if she wants to invite a girlfriend
“Branckman is getting more experienced and promising.”
——–
IMO, Brackman hasn’t done anything promising yet. For a pitcher who is supposed to be a frontline starter down the road, I’d expect him to dominate the lower levels even with his limited experience.
He’s naturally still learning to pitch but even raw pitchers who are touted as future stars can often get away with their inexperience at low level ball and still dominate.
I must admit I’m starting to consider him more of a longshot than others because they need him to progress faster than it might be reasonable for him to. I would never call him a bust, but I guess I wish he hadn’t been given a major league deal.
I think we should put Hughes in long relief role and get Wang back to majors
Hughes has great potiential but somehow he can’t prove it in the majors, I doubt his problem can be solved in the minors, he can be great someday, even better than Greinke, no doubt about it, but the question is, when is that day??? we can’t keep Hughes in the rotation no matter how bad he pitches and wait for him comes to maturity, here is NY, not KC, we should give Hughes time to grow up but we can’t sacrifice our target(World Champion of course). CC is still not stabilize yet, Joba is doing well but he can’t go distance, we need a long relief and a long distance start pitcher badly, Wang has proved he can go deep before he gets hurt, and we should see what he can do right now, we have $4M Kei Igawa in the minors already, we don’t need another $5M minor pticher, it won’t be any good for Yankees, if Wang fails again, we shold try to trade him, not to keep him in the minors
