Escape from New York

The Twins are like a tourist from the sticks buying a Rolex off a card table in Times Square.

The Yankees have won 22 of their last 25 games at home against Minnesota including 10 of the last 11. After three walk-offs this weekend, Minnesota must be wondering what it needs to do to get a win here.

3 Walkoffs = Me Very Happy!

  2. Neil May 17th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Aceves for the 7th and 8th from now on.

  3. EvoLuTioN May 17th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

No idea, but hopefully its not figured out tomorrow. For some reason I’m expecting a very high scoring game tomorrow.

  4. Dr. Cox May 17th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

I would love a sweep. Although, its hard enough to sweep a team in a 3 game series let alone 4, the Yanks would love to keep this rolling as Baltimore comes to town.

Baltimore is a tough little team from what they’ve shown and a sweep here would certainly send a message to them in what should already be considered an eventful series.

    should be interesting.

  5. Spyder Man May 17th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

We need to get back to just being a team… not this superiority BS and pretending we are above the rest of baseball and should set proper standards and what not and trying to be role models for the world. Can’t have facial hair, can’t celebrate, can’t pie guys etc.

What are we allowed to do? Screw them all. This group of guys needs to create a new “Yankee way”. Out with the old, in with the new

  6. EvoLuTioN May 17th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

you can really see the impact the new blood on this team is having. I’m looking forward to posada returning BUT i hope captain buzzkill doesn’t kill this chemistry

  7. Dr. Cox May 17th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

“What are we allowed to do? Screw them all. This group of guys needs to create a new “Yankee way”. Out with the old, in with the new”

I like that…and I believe its coming to that.

20-17 sounds a whole lot better than 19-18. I hope they keep piling them on.

  8. West side May 17th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

    The bullpen is taxed

We can’t keep using 5-6 arms every game. It’s not even about the starter going deep. We bring in someone, they walk a couple guys, we bring in someone else, they walk someone, then we bring in someone else to get out of their mess. There are times where we use 4 guys to get 6 outs.

We need some nice tidy 10-1 wins, where even of a BP guy gives up runs, we don’t have to have 3 other guys frantically warming anticipating getting in the game to get out of a jam because the game is close.

  9. EvoLuTioN May 17th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

    How is this bullpen “taxed”

More overreactions? Wouldn’t expecting anything less from some fans on here.

  10. NITRO May 17th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

    Francessa tomorrow:

    Killing AJ for the pies
Killing Gardner for his play today
    Break up the Mets core
    Jobber to the pen

  11. Vader May 17th, 2009 at 6:34 pm

“What are we allowed to do? Screw them all. This group of guys needs to create a new “Yankee way”. Out with the old, in with the new”

I say let them grow facial hair and what do you think Francessa would have to say about Oscar Gamble and his fro?

  12. stuart a May 17th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

the pen is not shot. they may stink but veras, coke, and ramirez did not pitch and aceves threw 1 inning.

the twins steal many games at home also.

    a win is a win enjoy whiners……………

  13. Source 23 May 17th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

    Evolution,

    They pitched 4 innings Friday
    5 innings yesterday
    3.1 innings today

Probably no Aceves or MO tomorrow. Coke probably gets an extra day too. Bruney only back on Tues at the earliest

I guess what that guy meant is that the only guys who are good are taxed.

  14. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Walks kill a pitching staff. This staff, both starters and relievers, walk too many guys. WAY too many.

It doesn’t seem to change so, they are going to need reinforcements as the season goes on because these guys will be cooked in another month.

Hopefully, Bruney can get back and that will help. They will need more than him though if they are going to fix the pen.

Tomorrow? I’m just glad they won this series because there aren’t many fresh arms out there.

You play the game and hope it doesn’t go into extras.

These guys could use a break from these kind of games.

  15. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

12+ innings in 3 days for a bullpen is a taxed bullpen.

Unless of course you think Jose Veras and Edwar Ramirez are “fresh arms”.

The bullpen is taxed. But, that’s what happens when you walk too many guys and games go into extra innings. It happens to every team at some points during the season.

You just deal with it. All you can do.

  16. Nick May 17th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

“We need some nice tidy 10-1 wins, where even of a BP guy gives up runs, we don’t have to have 3 other guys frantically warming anticipating getting in the game to get out of a jam because the game is close.”

Bingo. They’ve pitched 13 innings this series

  17. Rocco NYY May 17th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

    Evolution,

Are you watching the same games? The bullpen IS taxed.

  18. Flip May 17th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

I’m sure Jose Veras is fresh… considering he only pitches to a couple batters then gets pulled everytime.

this pen has been worn out.

  19. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow May 17th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

SJ44-Do you think they call Wang up this week? If the velocity is there(who knows what it really is), nothing should stop them, right? Or maybe one more start in AAA just to make sure all systems are a go?

  20. Bronx 78 May 17th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

    SJ,

Couldn’t agree more. Walks are a HUGE problem. And outside of CC… it appears nobody is getting better in that department.

Burnett cannot walk 6 guys today

  21. Vader May 17th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

No off days for the next seven days…there will be a few moves made or let’s hope for some big offensive outbursts.

All in all let’s just hope that winning gets really contagious.

  22. bru May 17th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

wang looked great, bruney didn’t need to as long as there wasn’t any pain wich there wasn’t.

both should be back very soon.just waiting on nady, posada, molina.

we should be a very good team with a great bench.

what these injuries showed us is that we have a few players that can play at the ml level in pena, cervelli, etc…

    gardner 4th outfielder,pena backup infielder.

very nice job by cervelli & pena filling in.

    absolutely great last few games.

pete.nice job on wfan this morning.

  23. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

    SA,

Good question. If he was throwing 93, and the sink was there, its a possibility.

Problem is, unless you see him pitch, you have no idea how his stuff was.

Shutting out AAA hitters isn’t the issue. Is his stuff ML ready? That’s the issue.

Phil Hughes also shuts out AAA hitters and we see how his stuff has yet to translate to the majors.

Its not about the results. Its about his stuff.

My gut feeling? Probably one more AAA start.

That’s just my gut though. Its not from talking to anybody.

  24. Mike R. May 17th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

    Good points all around.

That’s what happened to the Mets bullpen last year. None of the guys could get outs consistently, so they were basically batter to batter every game. Manual had pretty much the entire pen warming up at all times because nobody was capable of pitching a clean inning. They were all exhausted AND ineffective. He ended up having to use 6 guys every game, 6 guys who were not very good either.

We need to fix that. Bruney should be a big help, but other guys behind him need to step up too.

  25. jonathan May 17th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

i think that either edwar or veras or both need to be taken away (i know they cant be demoted) i would pitch ace in the 7th/ 8th and try one of the kids again (melancon, robertson?)

  26. Rachel May 17th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I hope that Cervelli doesn’t need that many games off until Posada comes back. Cash is just brutal behind the plate. From calling breaking balls to a .190 hitter, to not even trying to block balls in the dirt, to swinging at the 1st pitch every single time he comes to the plate. A back up catcher is not supposed to hit but they at least need some sort of defense behind the plate, he is just awful..

  27. Matty May 17th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

When is Posada due back again? Cervelli has been awesome. I wonder what Girardi will do with him when Jorgie & Jose come back. As far as Cash, I don’t understand. Nobody seems to give this guy a chance. He’s only caught a couple games so far & he’s labeled as “awful”. Yea we got a cost run but, I didn’t see a terrible game from him out there today. I’m not saying he was phenomenal but, he wasn’t awful. When a player isn’t what some fans expect they want to run him out of town when a player does good they want him signed a new contract.

  28. EvoLuTioN May 17th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

asides from Mariano and Aceves, everyone else should be available

  29. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! May 17th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

It’s too bad that we aren’t gaining much ground during this win streak. Everyone else save for BAL keeps winning as well. The AL East is going to be a dog fight the whole season.

  30. EvoLuTioN May 17th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Cash is suppose to be a defensive catcher, we all know he sucks at the plate. But the fact is, cervelli has been far superior defensively and offensively from what I’ve seen sofar. There is no reason to put cash out there

  31. Jeter's Future Wife May 17th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

who cares what the Twins think, just keep in the W column! Girardi said CMW pitched 7 shutout innings howver Hughes is pitching Tues and wouldn’t be able to work CMW in rotation, obviously, that soon after starting today.

  32. Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime May 17th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Really amazing, three walk off wins in a row.

No one’s really tlaking about it, but these wins are the type of thing that turns the stadium from just a building to something more, to something we can call home.

  33. Joan May 17th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Any word on when Molina might get back? Is it more than a week for him?

  34. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow May 17th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

    Thanks SJ44.
I want Wang back here, but I want the Wang of old. I don’t want him to come up here just to get shelled again. I would lean more for one more start in AAA, but if those watching him think he is ready to come back-well alrighty then.

I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. :)

  35. EvoLuTioN May 17th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

I’m pretty sure Posada is closer to returning than Molina

  36. Larry Of Palm Bay May 17th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

One good thing is that The Yankees are doing some small ball
(Bunting) a little more, That will lead to good things most of the time. Except for Gardener Today.

  37. Wes May 17th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Cash just had come back off the DL when he was called up so its not like he got anytime down in AAA to prepare. He’s not awful. He wasn’t the greatest but, I’m not going to go as far to say that he was terrible. People are so stuck on Cervelli that bow you see some fans outing Molina. Cervelli is terrfic but, he can’t catch every single game.

  38. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow May 17th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

    From earlier today:

More injury updates: Nothing new on Damaso Marte, who’s still working on strengthening exercises. He’s “a ways away,” Girardi said … Xavier Nady is continuing to hit off a tee and soft-toss … Jose Molina will travel to Tampa during this homestand and Nady will probably follow when the Yankees leave town.

    http://bombersbeat.mlblogs.com/

  39. Jackasaur May 17th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

“People are so stuck on Cervelli that bow you see some fans outing Molina.”

Yup but, you got to admit Cervelli is outstanding both defensively & offensively. The kid is a special talent for sure

  40. Code X May 17th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

    Laura,

Yep. Toronto and Tampa swept their teams this weekend too. Boston tied with SEA late.

We’re going to have to play well at all times so we don’t lose ground. Too soon to start scoreboard watching, but you realize that these other teams are good too and we need to continue to play well.

  41. 86w183 May 17th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Roster management will be interesting. I believe Edwar can be sent down, but Veras cannot without his permission. So I say send out Edwar tonight for Melancon and then DFA/Trade/send down/neuter Veras once Bruney is ready.

I am now an Aceves believer.

Berroa for Shelley Duncan or John Rodriguez should happen the sooner the better

  42. Scottyman May 17th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Do you think they call Francisco Cervelli “San” as a nickname? haha you get it? San Francisco?! wow I really crack myself up.

    (I know I’m odd)

  43. dave May 17th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

What do the twins need to do to get a win? Leave NY because it aint happening here. Sorry guys.

Nothing like a few walk off wins to make my finals week a little bit easier. I hope we dont hear another word about the yanks not hitting in the clutch for a while.

I noticed which two guys were NOT in the game today. Edwar and veras need to pack their bags and go somewhere else. They are both useless right now. What is the point of even having them here when they are one inning pitcher being relegated to mop up duties at this point because neither can be trusted. In our current win streak, neither of them has even pitched 2 innings and both have struggled in their about 1 inning each. If we are going to lose the momentum, I swear it will be one of those two doing it for us. We need a few more reliable guys and if we dont have them, give someone else a shot because these two are not IT.

  44. Vader May 17th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

“Yup but, you got to admit Cervelli is outstanding both defensively & offensively. The kid is a special talent for sure”

Defensively yes…offensively good, young, and very energetic, which is good enough to stick around and IMO he can play with the big boys, just with the way he has handled the staff, especially CC.

  45. bodhisattva May 17th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Hughes will pitch Wednesday, not Tuesday.

  46. jennifer May 17th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Joan- Joe has said he further behind than Jorge.

  47. Vader May 17th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Scottyman…good, but some things should just be left unsaid.

  48. Vader May 17th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

This may not be a big thing…but I would want Wang to split up Andy and CC upon return.

  49. BBFan May 17th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

See what a winning steak does…
No one, including Pete, is calling for Joe’s head.
Suddenly Joe has become a genius and he is making a difference :)
The players are hitting walk of HRs because he told them to do so :)

  50. Scottyman May 17th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

“Scottyman…good, but some things should just be left unsaid.”

ha I know. I’m just in a good mood having a good day.

  51. RS May 17th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Posada is due back before Molina, so it looks like Cervelli will be around for a while as the backup catcher.

Also, is there any way we can send Berroa down tomorrow and call up another reliever?

  52. Boston Dave (in Portland, OR) May 17th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

    WALKOFF for Seattle

    Red Sox lose!!!

  53. bodhisattva May 17th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

    Mariners win :)

  54. jennifer May 17th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Woo Hoo walk off win for Seattle.

  55. Kevin S. May 17th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

“Also, is there any way we can send Berroa down tomorrow and call up another reliever?”

Yes. I believe the technical term for doing it is “DFA’d” ;-)

  56. RS May 17th, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Mariners win on a walk-off! 1.5 GB of Red Sox and WC.

  57. Code X May 17th, 2009 at 7:17 pm

    Sox lose!

  58. MagicFan May 17th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

“Do you think they call Francisco Cervelli “San” as a nickname? haha you get it? San Francisco?! wow I really crack myself up. ”

-I knew someone would eventually bring that up. no comment

  59. RS May 17th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Oh yeah, and the walk-off run was unearned because of Nick Green’s second error of the day. That makes me feel better because I’m mad that Green has been so good for them with the bad when he never did anything when he was on the Yankees.

  60. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow May 17th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

  63. BBFan May 17th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

SoX lost, so we made ground on them again.
As Our team is improving they are falling apart.
By end of June they will be far in our rear view mirror.

  64. Betsy May 17th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I’m not concerned that the Yankees didn’t gain much ground – they did gain a game on Toronto (beating them twice on their home turf) and they have gained a couple of games on Boston in the last week or so. The important thing is that they are playing well and have won a bunch of games in the late innings – winning breeds confidence and these guys know that they can come back from most deficits.

I really would prefer that Bruney have another outing or so in AAA before he comes up. If he’s rusty, he’s going to get killed up here – there’s no point in that.

I’ve just turned on Baseball Tonight. Always a good time after a Red Sox loss.

  74. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Uh, nobody is “falling apart” and running away from anybody in the AL East this year.

    Its a brutal division.

The Red Sox went 2-4 on a West Coast roadtrip. What the Yankees usually do on the West Coast.

It was also their final WC trip of the year, while the Yankees have yet to hit the WC.

Optimism is all fine and dandy. Realism is better.

The Yankees aren’t going to be running away with this division.

Its going to be close all year.

Christina that’s not fair. It isn’t “exclusive” nor is it the cool kid’s club. It’s the positive kid’s club. And you can join if you want. Mel didn’t want to but supported what we were doing.

We’re not trashing mel for her decision not to join.

“Boy do I feel lame not being part of the exclusive cool kids club.”

    ——-

the “club” is just a way of banding together to try and limit the constant premature negative posts that occur on a daily basis. last week the yankees were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs according to some idiots.

considering you’re a miserable human being and most of your posts are complaints, it’s a real shocker that you have yet another insult to hand out.

  78. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

This was not a good week for the bridgejumpers in here.

Their “its over” posts in the third inning every time the Yankees fall behind tend to lose steam after 3 walkoff wins in a row.

This team may have holes but, they grind a helluva lot better than last years team. Its not even close.

Already 14 come from behind wins this year. They had 3 at this time last year.

This team will fight to the end. No doubt about that.

Gotta fix the pitching though. Can’t go an entire season pitching like this and expect walk off wins to overcome it.

That’s going to be the challenge for Cash. Eiland and Girardi.

  79. RS May 17th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

I hope Bruney pitches well when he returns, but you can never tell how a guy will recover from injury. Ideally you wouldn’t want to ask him to protect a 1-run lead in his first game back.

I think with our starting pitching and offense we can live with Aceves, Coke, and Bruney for the 7th and 8th innings. We just need one more guy to step up and be decent (like Edwar Ramirez of last year), who you may not trust in a big spot but can hold a game when it’s close, and I think we’ll be good to go.

  80. Boston Dave (in Portland, OR) May 17th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

“The Red Sox went 2-4 on a West Coast roadtrip. What the Yankees usually do on the West Coast.”

    ——-

    SJ44,

I kept drawing an anology to the Yanks not having ARod in the middle of their lineup to the Sox if they didn’t have Youkilis.

It doesn’t help that Ortiz has struggled (so did Tex) but it does go to show how much better the Yankees are with Tex and Alex hitting 3-4 in that lineup.

Regardless, if/when the Sox starting pitching can pick it up, they’ll be right back to winning most of their games.

Who’s saying the Yankees are running away with anything? The Sox have also played as well as they can possibly play with their 12 game winning streak……and during that streak, they didn’t put the Yankees away. Let’s enjoy gaining a game and another great win before we douse ourselves with cold water

  85. 11 Five May 17th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

“The Red Sox went 2-4 on a West Coast roadtrip. What the Yankees usually do on the West Coast.

It was also their final WC trip of the year, while the Yankees have yet to hit the WC.

Optimism is all fine and dandy. Realism is better.”
    ———————————–

Yep. This is going to be a dogfight all year. We might win several games in a row and pick up ground on nobody. We might go 7-3 in our next 10 and lose ground. Other teams might do the same while we’re winning. The teams in front of us are all good.

But as long as we play consistent ball from here on out, we will be in the hunt late in the year and that is all you can ask for.

  86. Boston Dave (in Portland, OR) May 17th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

“I think with our starting pitching and offense we can live with Aceves, Coke, and Bruney for the 7th and 8th innings.”

    ——–

I really think we need to give Marte the benefit of the doubt as well.

He says he was injured in the spring and tried to pitch through it. Let’s see what a healthy Marte can do. I believe he’ll be pretty good (he was good at the end of last season until they overworked him and wore him out).

  87. John C. May 17th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

“Gotta fix the pitching though. Can’t go an entire season pitching like this and expect walk off wins to overcome it.

That’s going to be the challenge for Cash. Eiland and Girardi.”

Agree 100%. These wins are nice, but they need to address the underlying concerns. Can’t expect to win games like this all year.

    B
eckett and Lester have ERAs over 6, Dice-K has been on the DL, Ortiz is a shell of himself, Youkallis hasn’t played in almost 2 weeks and is on the DL etc.

They have been grinding it out too. They are going to get healthier and play better to when they get home. It’s not like we’re the only ones with injuries/issues.

  94. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

When you hear Marte is “a ways away”, that’s Yankee code for “don’t expect him back until after the 4th of July”.

Aceves pitched two innings the other day and was very sore afterward. He is not a guy that can handle a bullpen workload because he’s never trained for it. He’s a starting pitcher.

    Not every pitcher is interchangable.

Bruney, Aceves and Coke are all guys, for various reasons, that you can use like mules.

Its why I have advocated for a month they bring up Tomko. You can “Proctor” him and use him like a mule for awhile.

Veteran arm, happy to be back in the bigs, and will do anything possible to stay.

Every staff has to have a guy like that on it.

When you factor in the number of walks/pitches per game this staff throws, even when they are throwing well, having one guy you can abuse a bit out there (like Tomko) is a good thing.

  95. Boston Dave (in Portland, OR) - OPPC member May 17th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

    quick question:

    when does Toronto slow down??

The Bluejays play Boston for 3 games next week and again in a couple weeks.

That will be a good gauge for them. of course, as usual the Sox miss the opponent’s best pitcher, Halladay, in BOTH series!!

  96. Orange J May 17th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

We still have 3 West Coast trips

3 with the Angels right before the All-Star break
Oakland-Seattle 7 game trip in late August
Angels-Seattle trip in late September (which is going to suck flying out West towards the end of a pennant race)

Sox got theirs out of the way early. But they went 2-4 on both of them. They don’t go west of Texas the rest of the year.

  101. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

As far as the pies, I don’t see the problem with it.

For too many years, this team was too uptight. Hell, ever since they choked away the ’04 ALCS, they played too uptight.

This is a loose group. Precisely the kind of group you have to have to survive in NY for a full season.

I like the enthusiasm and the fun. Its refreshing.

This is BASEBALL. Its not life and death.

The fact that these guys are having fun makes this a more interesting team to watch.

I don’t like robotic teams. They tend to play uptight in the big moments.

So far, this team doesn’t. I happen to think that’s a good thing.

The Yankees bullpen will get better as the season goes on. Bruney will return, then Marte, and there will be plenty of arms available in July. I also expect Melancon and/or Robertson to make another appearence at some time.

I actually really like Robertson as a middle reliever. I wouldn’t trust him in a big spot just yet, but he did have 4 wins for us last year, despite having not so great of an ERA. He’s the kind of guy we could use in the 10th inning of a tie game when we’ve exhausted our best relievers already.

More injury updates: *Nothing new on Damaso Marte, who’s still working on strengthening exercises. He’s “a ways away,” Girardi said* … Xavier Nady is continuing to hit off a tee and soft-toss … Jose Molina will travel to Tampa during this homestand and Nady will probably follow when the Yankees leave town.

  112. SJ44 May 17th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

    Dave,

Girardi has been saying it all week. I wouldn’t expect Marte for another month or two. When stuff is that quiet about his condition, that’s a telltale sign he’s out for a long time.

  113. Angel (F) - OPPC member May 17th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I think randomly, like every 10 or so is better. I’ve also changed my tagline. Shakespeare was getting a bit old, so I’m good for a change.

  114. Betsy May 17th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

The pie thing is great – the players enjoy it, the fans enjoy it – what’s not to like? I love it when players give each other hot foots or put bubble gum on their teammates’ caps – they’re men acting like little boys. If you can’t have fun playing this game, then you shouldn’t be in this game. Ken Davidoff mentioned the pie thing in his blog this morning and he likes it – I really don’t think we’re going to see anyone in the media complain about this. How can anyone begrudge people having fun?

  115. Jeff D. May 17th, 2009 at 7:49 pm

I Don’t think the Jays are going away

The AL as a whole is down this year, outside of the East.

Jays are considerably better than the Oaklands, White Sox, Twins, Indians etc. of the world and should beat those teams easily and pad their win total. Same with Tampa and Boston.

The key is how they handle the Big 3 in the East. But all of these teams are going to be there because they are all better than the teams outside the division. You have to think the Scott Richmonds and Brian Tallet’s of the world would fizzle out sooner or later, but who knows?

  120. Angel (F) - OPPC member May 17th, 2009 at 7:49 pm

  121. Boston Dave (in Portland, OR) - OPPC member May 17th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

    Sa/SJ,

tough news. I think Marte can be a useful part of the pen.

This just reinforces the need to acquire another bullpen arm.

Even if Melancon or Robertson comes through, I’m learning quickly that “bullpen depth” doesn’t actually exist.

  122. Betsy May 17th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

BD, Francesca hasn’t had the chance to criticize it yet…….but he probably will. Kay said on the Joe Girardi show that O’Neill and Cone are not fans of it as they are old school……..I rolled my eyes at that. Travis Hafner, Tony Graffanino and Andy Marte are some of the batters wang faced today so not all of them are scrubs.

word is wang looked good so it will be very interesting to see if he comes up.

if hughes was pitching well i think he stays down for one more start but with hughes getting roughed up it will be a tough call.could go either way.

it is amazing how before the winning streak when the rs were winning every night also a lot of people especially francessa were saying how the red sox are doing everything right & the yankees everything wrong.

what is everybody saying now?? it has gotten very quiet on that front.

it was just a matter of time before bostons terrible pitching caught up with them.

Any thoughts on what the moves will be when Wang and Bruney are ready to come back?

There was a “discussion” between Cone/O’Neill/Kay about leaving Hughes in the bullpen.

I’m hoping it’s Albaladejo for Bruney. Too many walks..give Tomko a shot. He looked alright today (nice play by Tex, but he did start each batter 2-0).

Subtracting Abreu, Mussina, Betemit, Farnsworth, and Pavano, and adding Sabathia, Swisher, Burnett, and Tex brought a whole new vibe to this team. Not only did Cashman acquire players who can perform, but they seem like genuinely good teammates.

And it also helps when young players like Gardner, Pena, and Cervelli come up and produce. They bring energy to the team but are also respected by the veterans because they help the team win.

I’ve thought about the whole “Hughes to the ‘pen” discussion they were having today during the broadcast. Coney saying that that’s how he broke into the rotation and thats the way they used to do things made me think about it a little more…

I think its definitely something to consider later in the season. But with all the injuries Hughes has had, he needs to get his innings in this year. However, considering how unsettled our bullpen is, maybe bringing Hughes up in a relief role later on would be a good move. Helps shore up the bullpen and helps him get confidence with his stuff at the major league level. I’m open to the idea as the season progresses

I don’t see how Hughes coming out of the pen is going to help him in his development of 3 pitches. I’d rather see them send him down.

SJ, They just look like a loose club right now….They were so tight just a few weeks ago…They’re having fun and enjoying playing, that goes along way…..This mini-streak gets them back into position, as they were 6.5 out just last week…..I was hpoing to be within 2-3 games come month’s end, and it’s looking ggod….Just keep winning each series, and they’ll be in front of the divsion by mid June……I’m booked to make 2 trips to NYC in October…First week and the 4th week….I do plan on watching the Yanks on both trips east……Texeria’s play since is fresh in my mind…Game saver….

I agree, that’s why I said LATER on in the season after he gets his innings in.

Don’t forget Michael Dunn. He ran into a rough patch but he’s already back on the horse. He’s not far off at all.

    ————————————————————

Dunn got whacked around again, today. In the last 5 games, he’s been scored on in 4. 13 hits and 12 earned runs in 8.2 innings.

Outfield heroism has it’s price – the extra base.

Yeah but he hadn’t pitched in five days for one of those outings, and he also had a couple of good ones.

Stop the madness? Those are words I could use around here myself, at times.

Look for me, being a positive poster is not about being Pollyanna.

It’s not about not being constructively critical when its reasonable to be. Nor is it about stemming conversation of constructive criticism.

Its not about not being able to occasionally express disappointment when something disappointing happens.

Its about stopping the madness of the irrational, hyperbolic pile-ons that go on around here when things aren’t going the way people want. The pile-ons that turn this place into a cesspool and keep people from posting.

Its about people who drive-by with the posts assuming the worst possible outcome for every given situation, and then disappear magically when things are going good.

Its about stopping the madness of posters that latch on to the names of people who are regulars and therefore have some semblance of credibility and use their names to turn this place into a madhouse.

    Enough is enough.

We thought if we became members, we might get inside info on a cure for the swine flu, Tom. :)

I was thinking that if people got tired of the listing we could all use the same tagline instead: I am a member of the OPPC.

We have way’s to make sure nobody gets tired.
