good for robertson. throw strikes and he will be around for a while…
hughes looking good, nah he has no long term value to the team. he is washed up only 22, but for the amateur pitching coach’s he only throws 93 or 94……..
Thank you Girardi. I appreciate you reading theis blog and seeing that fans wanted him to be given another chance. Robertson probably doesn’t even unpack his clothes when he joins the team becuase he knows that he is always going back to AAA a couple of days later.
You need 3 guys who can pitch in high leverage situations in the 7th/8th innings. Yanks have to find out if Melancon and/or Roberston can get it done in the next month or so or Cash is going to have to bite the bullet and trade for a reliever.
You can’t expect this team to make the playoffs in the AL East with 2 decent guys in the pen.
We all thought that the pen would be pretty solid. Reality is what it is.
With the state of the bullpen now, D-Rob is in a position to finally get his “shot” at carving out a niche for himself in the ‘pen. I hope he puts together some good outings and permanently removes himself from the Scranton Shuttle.
Aren’t homeruns up everywhere? I thought someone mentioned a while back that the ball could be wound tighter. Why doesn’t anyone look into that? I guess the easiest thing is the blame the Yankees and the park.

Definately. When a guy like Jason Bartlett, who has never had more than 5 in a season and 11 career in 1700 at bats, now has 7 this year, something’s up. His last one was 12 rows deep to the opposite field in Miami, not counting his 2 doubles high off of the scoreboard in left center. a career .280 hitter is hitting .380. He’s a nice little player, but he’s not .380 nice.
A-List, another reason he could’ve finished today’s ball game (the extra days rest) but no big deal…. him finishing the game is really just something we wanted to see. It’s great that he was able to leave the game as strong as he did and build towards next start.
Rachel: I believe you’re referring to the “Chris Britton” plan lol
Frustrating, but it’s the right move. I wish Bruney had told the Yankees that he was still feeling pain when he came off the DL. I understand competitive juices and all, but still……..The pain is a symptom of SOMETHING – there has to be something there. I hope they find whatever it is and that it’s not serious
I remember the good old “the balls are wound up tighter” argument of 8 years ago or so. Home runs were up so we assumed it was the ball. The manufacturers said “we didn’t do anything to the ball” but many people still believed that they were tighter
Seems like Bruney is headed for Dr. James Andrews’ office. Doesn’t mean he’ll be getting Tommy John’ed, but that kind of consistent elbow pain is clearly a bigtime problem. Hopefully he can get back some time late in the summer, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Hopefully Brian Cashman has already got some ideas about relievers that will be available before July 31, or one of the young hurlers (Melancon, Dunn, Garcia, etc.) will get on a roll that carries them into the majors and into success in the majors.
I don’t know about that. How many righty hitters hit broken bat homers[Teixeira] into the left field bleachers in old Yankee Stadium? Less steroids and more homers in the new park. You can’t get away with too many bad pitches, and lefties plus righties with inside out swings are lofting balls to right field that are carrying into the seats.
Thanks Pete for answering my question as to which pitcher was being brought back to replace Bruney.
Hughes pitched a terrific, smart game. Was his fastball really at 91, with an occasional 93 as I saw on MLB.TV?
the MLB argument is crap. A 22 year oldpitcher over 100 pitches with an 11-run lead needs high five and a cold beer, not an extra inning that potentially can do a ton of harm and little if any good.
Hughes went over 100 pitches for the first time this year and the first time since 2007. Anyone who thinks he should have pitched the ninth inning is, in a word foolish.
Correct me if I’m wrong but Sheets had a torn flexor tendon of his pitching elbow, and I don’t remember if that was picked up initially on MRI. Bruney has a strain of the flexor tendon, I believe, but that still is worrisome for a pending tear.
Hopefully sooner rather than later, Melancon is ready to take Tomko’s slot. And hopefully, Veras keeps throwing strikes. If that happens, the bullpen seems like it will be fine, and if not, luckily it’s still only late May. Plenty of time for tweaking.
this is the move i wanted. The way the bullpen shakes out, Robertson will end up in high leverage situations. This will hopefully be his first real, extended opportunity to showcase his goods.
Give it another week or so and hopefully Melancon joins him at the expense of Tomko. No matter what, Tomko is not a better pitcher than Melancon at this stage.
just a small comment. robertson has an under 2.00 era in scranton, but he’s 0-3. does this speak to blown saves/holds and speak poorly of pressure situations?

Good glad for him. never really understood why he was sent down to begin with.
Thanks Peter! Glad to hear he’ll get another shot.
SoCalYankeeFan
Jonathan Sanchez has Atlanta scoreless through 5… could we get him for Igawa/Nady??
Nick,
Throw in Matsui, and that might get it done!
Pete,
Forgot to welcome you back. Everyone’s glad to see you, especially the Yankees’ offense.
Thanks as always.
ptl
Nice
Now replace Tomko with Melancon and we’re good to go.
Thank you Girardi. I appreciate you reading theis blog and seeing that fans wanted him to be given another chance. Robertson probably doesn’t even unpack his clothes when he joins the team becuase he knows that he is always going back to AAA a couple of days later.
Hughes’ next start is in Cleveland against Pavano lol
It would be on 5 days rest though, we have an off-day on Thursday
Aceves is pretty reliable
Albaladejo, Veras, Tomko – not so much
Coke might be reliable
Bruney, Marte are hurt.

Rachel – He is probably there longer, until Bruney is back.
But yeah, I doubt he stays up here long. The organization seems to love mediocrity like Tomko.
With the state of the bullpen now, D-Rob is in a position to finally get his “shot” at carving out a niche for himself in the ‘pen. I hope he puts together some good outings and permanently removes himself from the Scranton Shuttle.
So has Hughes officially taken the rotation spot back from Wang?

Hughes was dominant. Maybe he isn’t a bust after watching the mighty Texas offense crumble at his feet.
Congrats to anyone who gets to leave Syracuse!

MLB network killing the decision to take hughes out
I agree with MLB Network

“IT’S THE BALL….NOT THE BALLPARK.”

If anybody missed it, I captured the audio from the Yanks post-game reactions today.
Girardi, Damon, Hughes, Alex:

Bruney has, hopefully, a milder form of what Ben Sheets had, which eventually required surgery.
MLB Network has a legit argument, but you can’t really blame Joe for his decision.
MLB Network is so much more enjoyable to watch than NESPN.
Bud Black went nuts on that ump.
Thanks a lot Pel. Living in Vegas I cant listen to the post game.
vb03,
Missed the Hughes portion. Anything of note?
the MLB argument is crap. A 22 year oldpitcher over 100 pitches with an 11-run lead needs high five and a cold beer, not an extra inning that potentially can do a ton of harm and little if any good.

MLB Network is MUCH better then NESPN.
Yankee Trader – 3 MRI’s on Bruney’s elbow have all come back clean, how can you predict he has what Ben Sheets had??
Robertson would have been my second choice.
Let’s see, we have:
Tomko
Wang
Gangstah
Veras
Robertson
Coke
Rivera
Correct me if I’m wrong but Sheets had a torn flexor tendon of his pitching elbow, and I don’t remember if that was picked up initially on MRI. Bruney has a strain of the flexor tendon, I believe, but that still is worrisome for a pending tear.
If the season ended today, the New York Yankees would be the American League Wild Card winner.
They would also be really confused because it’s only May 25, but you get the point.
Hopefully sooner rather than later, Melancon is ready to take Tomko’s slot. And hopefully, Veras keeps throwing strikes. If that happens, the bullpen seems like it will be fine, and if not, luckily it’s still only late May. Plenty of time for tweaking.
Akinori Iwamura will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee.
this is the move i wanted. The way the bullpen shakes out, Robertson will end up in high leverage situations. This will hopefully be his first real, extended opportunity to showcase his goods.

Nick in SF in Santa Rosa,
How can you be in SF & Santa Rosa at the same time? Wouldn’t it be Nick from SF, in Santa Rosa. Just wondering. Not being snippy
And the good news is…?
Let’s see if Girardi actually uses David Robertson this time around.
would have liked to see edwar up instead of robertson..
just a small comment. robertson has an under 2.00 era in scranton, but he’s 0-3. does this speak to blown saves/holds and speak poorly of pressure situations?
