A modest record

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 26, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

According to the Yankees daily notes package, the team has set a franchise record by going 12 consecutive games without an error.

Twelve games? That’s it? Given how long the Yankees have been playing baseball, wouldn’t you think the record would be at least 20 games?

———–

President Obama today selected Sonia Sotomayor, a federal appeals court judge in New York, as his nominee for the Supreme Court.

Astute baseball fans will recall that it was Judge Sotomayor in 1995 who ended the strike by preventing MLB from unilaterally implementing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and using replacement players.

Perhaps on the high court she can rule that Joba should be a starter.

———–

There’s a Facebook page calling for the end of “YMCA” at the Stadium.

We wish them nothing but the best.

Sotomayer is a Bronx native & huge Yankee fan. Wins my support.

  3. mouser May 26th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

What are the AL and ML records for games without an error?

  4. vin May 26th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

12 games really surprised me. I honestly figured they would have at least one 12 game error-less streak every single year. I too would be interested in seeing what the ML record is.

  5. Patrick Bateman May 26th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Does he have time to watch Yankee games while playing Xbox Live?

  6. gayle May 26th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

If she could put an end to the Joba to the pen debate then she really does deserve a seat of the Supreme Court. But alas I think even she doesn’t quite have that kind of power or persuasion.

  7. Jo May 26th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Whats with all the hate against the YMCA and Cotton-Eyed Joe? I went last week and my friends and I were quite upset that they did not play Cotton Eyed Joe ( we are all 23/24, but we still like to act like 12 year olds and dance like idiots when that song comes on ;) ) For people like me who only get to go to a few games a year, those things are part of the charm…..

  8. Doreen May 26th, 2009 at 12:44 pm

It would be interesting to know what the all-time record for consecutive error-free gamaes among all teams is.

  9. DT - OPPC Member (It's in our blood) May 26th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

based on some of the strange scoring decisions I’ve seen this year – error-less streak records around baseball might be broken.

Whatever happened to “a major leaguer has to make that play”?

I can’t think of any scoring decisions that benefited the Yanks in the last 12 games – just speaking in general.

  10. m May 26th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Good morning everyone. Are you guys still buzzing from that game yesterday? Shampoo, rinse, repeat over the next two days, please.

Some whack stuff going on in the previous threads. :?

  11. mouser May 26th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

I forgot which game or who the batter was but I remember Jeter made a possible error in the Philly series that was scored a hit.

  12. Uncle Ellsworth (relax Chief) May 26th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

I’ve noticed Tex hasn’t had to save many errors either – lately-

If getting rid of the YMCA stops the Bleacher Creatures from chanting “Why are you gay?” then I’m all for it. I loved watching games at the old place from Section 39, but I got reminded in the middle of each game that I was amongst New York’s finest scumbags.

What’s with all the green links with double underscore? vin, x-box, & game all have special tags.

“Perhaps on the high court she can rule that Joba should be a starter.”

But surely she would want what’s best for her beloved yankees. Groom the lad as a closer, alla Mariano circa 1996 :)

any ballplayers coming out of the closet this year?

  17. vin May 26th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Not seeing it here – perhaps it is your web browser?

  18. Anthony May 26th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Wasn’t Jeter charged with an error for his mis-throw on Sunday? If not, he should have been.

  19. Jon Ringland May 26th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

“Wasn’t Jeter charged with an error for his mis-throw on Sunday? If not, he should have been.”

No way, dude. He was sprinting to his left and spinning. No way you can call that an error

I finally found out who those two Red Sox fans are who sit behind home plate @Fenway (previously known to me as ‘blonde-haired guy’ and ‘whacky-headphone-wearing guy’):

there is absolutely no limit to the answers that can be found via the internet.

According to Ed Price the ML record for consecutive errorless games is 17 held by the 2006 Red Sox

  24. Yanksgal07 May 26th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

I could care one way or the other about the YMCA. I go to plenty of games and in all honesty it seems that many people enjoy it and sing along so what’s the big deal. My biggest gripe is the dopey wave …especially during a close game with people standing up when a game winning hit or big strikeout is just about to unfold. To me the wave is the most annoying of all. Thankfully I haven’t seen it done this year …they have tried to start it but it dies before it gets to the 4th section.

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!

  25. Brandon "Phil Hughes does not shake hands after 8 IP " May 26th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

We were talking to some Mets fans on another board

    We’re pondering a few things

    Wang/E.Ramirez/J.Miranda/S.Duncan for Fernando Martinez/JJ Puttz

    Would you do it ?

  26. jennifer May 26th, 2009 at 1:07 pm

What about getting rid of the guy who dances around in a satin shirt?

    From the game on Sunday-

Did anyone see that guy dancing around with his shirt off? He looked like he had no pants on too. It was horrifying.

Interesting to me that the linked website – a Cubs fan site – also considers ESPN to be in the pocket of the Red Sox. Maybe we aren’t paranoid after all.

  28. Jon Ringland May 26th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Mike Francessa just called the 9th inning of Saturday’s Mets/Red Sox game the “greatest inning in Met history”. Im by no means a Mets historian, but thats probably a bit much, no?

  29. jennifer May 26th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

    Agree 1000%. Hate the wave.

  30. Go yankees May 26th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

ANDY will retire from Yankeess one day.

Joba needs to stay in the rotation.

If you know how ineffective Mo was as a starter, and later used as set up,then closer,it’s possible the Yankees, have their eyes on someone for closer, maybe in the farm.

    Sotomayor a Yankess fan,sweet!!

    Doreen,

I believe I may have come up w/an original thought:

how much would McDonald’s have to pay to change Denver’s team name to the ‘Denver McNuggets’?

sadly, I’m sure there’s an ad exec working for McDonald’s who has probably had that thought…

  35. sab May 26th, 2009 at 1:12 pm

so the twins decide to sit joe mauer against the redsox last night (minus his 9th inning pinch hit HR)after playing him all 4 games vs the yankees and in all games against the whitesox and brewers after the yankee series (you’d think they’d sit him in ONE game vs the brewers) – felix hernandez missed the redsox a few weeks back when they played in seattle – halladay once again misses the redsox when they play next, verlander will miss the redsox when they play each other in the next week or so – (at least the mets pitched santana against them – AND he won!!)

why is it that the yankees face all of the teams star pitchers and players and the redsox “miss out” on facing a good portion of them? shouldn’t the redsox be the team that teams change their pitching orders around for so that their best players play in all of them? is the yankee hate so big that teams still want to beat them badly even though the redsox have surpassed us as “the team to beat”?

  36. jennifer May 26th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

    S.A.

And it wasn’t someone you’d want to see dancing around with his shirt off let alone his pants.

  37. David May 26th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

They’ll never stop the YMCA thing, it timestamps the start of that great dynasty.

  38. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Ugh to the wave, too. I’m out in Chicago, and routinely yell at ChiSox fans for doing it. As I’m usually in Yankee paraphernalia, it’s usually a god way to start a fight. :D

Re: Francesa, did he forget a certain other late inning against the Red Sox? Say, twenty-three years ago?

  39. Bryan May 26th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

this must be the first time Francessa has seen K-Rod pitch.. haha

  40. Guy Incognito May 26th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

    Brandon:

That is a terrible, terrible trade, and I would not make it if they threw in a box of 60 chocolate-glazed Munchkins and a large milk-two sugars.

    Jennifer:

You must be talking about Disco Stu. Along with “Marlboro Man” and “The Jockey,” he somehow manages to get his syncopations shown on the JumboTron every game. He’s the Yankees’ answer to the NY Rangers’ “Dancing Larry” and IMO his antics should be thrown out with YMCA, Cotton-Eyed Joe, the PC Richard strikeout whistle, and all the other foofaraw with which the Yankees see fit to bombard their customers.

  41. Brandon "Phil Hughes does not shake hands after 8 IP " May 26th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

You guys know AJ taught Phil his new curveball grip in ST, I knew something was different about that break. It was nasty yesterday. Just nasty 8O

“That’s pitching,” said A.J. Burnett, who taught Hughes his curveball grip during spring training. “It was nice to see him throwing all his pitches and using the breaking pitch when it was 2-1 or 3-2.”

  42. jennifer May 26th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

  43. Brandon "Phil Hughes does not shake hands after 8 IP " May 26th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Guy Incognito, what.. you don’t like Fernando Martinez ? are you serious ?

  44. m May 26th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    vin,

Maybe, I’ll check on another computer later. You know how some of these adware things just hi-jack your browsers.

Noticed a little David Price talk in the last thread. I don’t know much about him, except that he’s very highly thought of, even more so than Joba.

We’ve seen Price do well at this level. And now we’ve seen Price not do so well at this level.

Just to put Hughes and his problems adjusting to the majors into a little perspective. If Price who came from a highly touted college program (and #1 pick overall) has trouble adjusting and being economical and consistent, then why wouldn’t a kid who was drafted out of high school and have to deal with injuries have similar problems?

What you saw from Joe Girardi was staying on message and giving Phil positive reinforcement in his post-game. That’s how it’s done.

  45. Trevor May 26th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

YMCA is played out. It’s not the 90′s anymore. They do need to stop with that song.

  53. Guy Incognito May 26th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Brandon, the Yanks already have their CF of the future and Martinez hasn’t shown too much with the bat. Basically he is the centerpiece of that trade, you’re giving up Wang (a two-time 19-game winner) for Martinez, and Edwar and two minor-league sluggers for a 32 year-old disgruntled setup man.

Now, if you add Ryan Church to the deal (Manuel hates him) maybe we can talk, but I for one haven’t given up on CMW quite yet.

  54. m May 26th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

    sab,

And we’re still only 1 game back. Even with the 5 losses. That’s a big swing right there.

Right now we’re in the WC lead with Toronto a half game back, and some other team (Angels?) only 3 games over .500. Everyone else is back, back, back.

Yesterday’s loss must be devastating for Tampa, I think it put them under .500.

If we can have another couple of months like May, we won’t have to worry about anyone else but ourselves.

Brandon – NO WAY I do that trade (below is a repost of what I wrote earlier)

And I can think of a certain inning in the 1986 world series that most Mets fans would say was a little better then a May win against the Red Sox

    Repost:

How can you talk about giving up Wang!?!?!?

    19 wins
    19 wins
    8-2 when he got hurt.

He’s not exactly done, he’s recovering from an injury, which sometimes takes longer then you would hope. Wang will be fine…. it may be next time out, it may take another month, but you don’t just give up on someone who has the potential to win 18-20 games every year.

  63. Brandon "Phil Hughes does not shake hands after 8 IP " May 26th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Guy Incognito, what would you trade Wang for ? It’s not about giving up it’s about also upgrading the future of this team, speed, athleticism, versatility, power+youth…remember Damon is a FA, Nady is a FA, Matsui might be done… Melky would be well used in RF, Jackson CF , Fernando in LF ? who knows and he’s a LHB w/ pop + speed.

  64. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

“Brandon, the Yanks already have their CF of the future and Martinez hasn’t shown too much with the bat.”

Wouldn’t hurt to have a guy with CF range in left. You’re wrong about the bat, though – his power has come this season. Posting a .291/.337/.552 as a twenty-year old (!) in AAA? Dude’s raking. Obviously, no prospect is a sure thing, but if it only took the Wanger to get him (the rest of that trade is filler), I’m doing that one in a heartbeat.

  65. m May 26th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

    jennifer,

That’s right, RISP went from non-existent to WOW!

Another thing to consider is that we were scoring runs in April, they just didn’t mean much because our pitching let us down. We only had a couple games in April where we scored less than 4 runs.

The walkoff wins over the homestand? Low-scoring affairs. So it’s really tough to garner anything from looking at average runs scored per game.

  66. Mark in Tampa May 26th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

    Mark in Tampa,

Apparently the influence of the LoHud blog is far and wide.

I wonder if people in the business read the comments and shake their heads. But can’t take their eyes off it because it’s a total train wreck?

  71. ralph May 26th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Maybe Hughes can teach AJ a thing or two about pitching

  72. Trevor May 26th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

I would make that trade. But it won’t happen.

LF Martinez CF Jackson RF Cabreara

    Looks decent to me.

  73. Guy Incognito May 26th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Brandon, I would want major-league-ready talent for Chien-Ming Wang. You’re really rolling the dice trading him for an unknown quantity…Lastings Milledge looked great in AAA ball too.

  74. Steve B May 26th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

“Brandon, the Yanks already have their CF of the future and Martinez hasn’t shown too much with the bat.”

He has this year. Same OPS in the International League as Austin Jackson. Martinez is doing it more with power (25 Extra basehits) while Jackson has gotten there by getting on base at a ridiculous space. Martinez doesn’t K quite as often as Jackson, but he still strikes out a little too much as measured against his walks. Martinez is a year younger, but both are high end prospects.

  75. Coach6423 May 26th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

  77. Baha Men May 26th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

I think they should replace YMCA with “I’m so excited” by the Pointer Sisters. That will totally get Derek Jeter pumped.

They should also change Cotton-Eye Joe to “Toy Soldiers” by Martika and they can have a bunch of kids lip-synching from an area that separated mortals from the Legends Seats so they look like they are behind bars. Awesome.

And I really dislike homophobes, so the Bleacher Creatures can take a hike and root for the Red Sox.

  78. Weather Man May 26th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I think Francessa’s statement about Saturday’s 9th being the best inning in Mets history is more an indictment on the futile history of the Mets, rather than the inning itself being that remarkable.

Sad that a backup catcher hitting a HR in the 9th inning to give them a lead is the greatest inning in their history.

  79. Mark in Tampa May 26th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I can’t see the Mets giving up Putz. If krod goes down, as looks very possible, the Mets pen would be much more disastrous than even last year if Putz was gone. That being said, I would take him if he was available.

Thank you Kevin S. I doubt the Mets do it but if Cashman makes it past hello Omar you know that kid Fernando I like him and your in need of a SP right ? I just so happen have a 19 game winner and a surplus of 1B fillers, I got a power bat named Miranda in AAA I could package him and a few BP arms if you throw in Puttz..if he can get past that point in the call then we have something good going.

  81. Tom in N.J. May 26th, 2009 at 1:37 pm

If the Met’s were going to trade Fernando Martinez, they could probably get someone better then Wang.

Why trade your best prospect for a pitcher who needs to be straightened out mechanically?

  82. Brandon "Phil Hughes does not shake hands after 8 IP " May 26th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

“I would make that trade. But it won’t happen.

    I know. :(

Guy Incognito, this kid wasn’t rushed like Lastings and plays better defense and has speed Lastings would wish, now if I could I would but we prbly can’t.

  83. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Oh, and can we stop evaluating Wang by wins? He was certainly an above-average pitcher at two hundred innings a year, a solid 2/3 guy, but those nineteen-win seasons were as much a product of the Yankees’ ridiculous run production those years as they were of what he did. He’s not an ace, don’t treat him as one.

in the interest of ACCURACY Mike F said it may have been the best inning in Mets REGULAR season History.

  85. Mark in Tampa May 26th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

“Sad that a backup catcher hitting a HR in the 9th inning to give them a lead is the greatest inning in their history.”

We had one of those too(Leyritz ’96), but I don’t think it would go down as the greatest inning in Yankee history. Maybe top ten though. Too many innings to consider to even begin to think about that!

  86. Betsy May 26th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I love that errorless streak – this is a much better defensive team than last year (thanks to Tex and Cano’s improved play – Pena’s also been good).

  87. Steve B May 26th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

“I can’t see the Mets giving up Putz.”

They wouldn’t give up Putz and Martinez for the package Brandon suggested anyway. 3 guys in the deal are borderline useless at the MLB level, and Wang is too close to free agency and remains an uncertainty in terms of finding his 2005-2008 form following his injury.

  88. Holla May 26th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

A lot of the “stat-heads” where skeptical about Wang even when he won 19 games because nobody nobody with as low K rates as him has maintained as low an ERA as him.

Why would anyone trade for him when he is a mess right now?

  89. Y26 May 26th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

    Wang has no value now.

He has to prove he is back to normal before anyone trades for him.

Why would a team give up a big time prospect for him without knowing he is 100% back to normal?

  90. Y26 May 26th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

    Weather Man,

And in a regular season game in May, no less. If that was the playoffs or something, it is a different story.

  91. Steve B May 26th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

“We had one of those too(Leyritz ‘96), but I don’t think it would go down as the greatest inning in Yankee history”

If not among the greatest, certainly among the most significant. That inning, indeed that at bat, was what triggered the dynasty years IMO.

  92. Danny May 26th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

The Mets bullpen behind K-Rod and Parnell sucks anyway, so why would they give up Putz?

They don’t need another SP and some prospects as badly as they need a big bat (Holliday, etc.) and more relief help.

  93. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

“A lot of the “stat-heads” where skeptical about Wang even when he won 19 games because nobody nobody with as low K rates as him has maintained as low an ERA as him.”

Most “stat heads” would tell you that while his inability to strike people out could pose a problem if he regressed at all in what he did well, his pinpoint accuracy and extreme worm-burning tendencies would allow him to thrive. Of course, having a shortstop who could actually go to his glove side would help CMW tremendously, but for the most part, Wang does control two of the three outcomes well, and that’s what most pitchers need to do to succeed.

  94. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

    “They don’t need another SP”

While they keep trotting Livan Hernandez out every fifth day? Seriously?

  95. JoeT 28 in 10!! MELKY FOR MVP!!!! May 26th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Kevin – until they start using team ERA to decide who makes the playoffs, I think we should probably count wins as a factor when talking about a pitcher.

    However look at is stats:
    2006: 218IP, 19-6 (and a save), 3.63 ERA
    2007: 199.1IP 19-7, 3.70 ERA
    2008: 95IP, 8-2, 4.07

Nothing there suggesting he’s not an ace

  96. S.o.S. May 26th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Good morning fellas. Havnt been in here since Saturday. Can someone tell me how many more starts are they going to allow Hughes to throw? He looks absolutely fearless out there. Could it be from being called out by Damon that made him change his demeanor? All i know from what i see, there is no reason to send him down. He has proven he belongs with the big boys.

  97. Steve B May 26th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

“They don’t need another SP and some prospects as badly as they need a big bat (Holliday, etc.) and more relief help.”

They most certainly do need another SP, but it is probably not as pressing as their need for a big bat for their outfield. Mets need quite a bit.

  98. ellen May 26th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Speaking of Wang, there has been a lot of discussion here that his arm slot is too high in relation to where it usually is. Is that something that is likely a by-product of his injury? Was he compensating for something else?

  99. Brandon "Phil Hughes does not shake hands after 8 IP " May 26th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Pete: That Sotomayer story was a delight!! Funniest thing I have read in a long time. TODAY IS JOBA TIME ! ! !

  101. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

JoeT – I didn’t know pitchers made the playoffs independently of their teams. Yes, TEAM wins are of paramount importance. Pitcher wins tell us very little about a player.

In 2006 and 2007, Wang posted ERA+s of 124 and 121. I don’t really consider being twenty to twenty-five percent better than the league-average pitcher to be “ace” material. ERA and ERA+ have their own issues, but in Wang’s case, they tell essentially the same story as more advanced metrics do.

  102. JeterJobaFan May 26th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

I worked in the DC area for 28 years so saw many photos, interviews with Supreme Court Judges. So, the vision of Sotomayer with a robe and a Yankees hat is hilarious. Made my day!

Unfortunantely, I will be at a meeting starting at 5:00 pm so will not be able to see Joba pitch tonight. Cheer him on folks so we think “sweep”. Go Yankees.

    Hi all,
Ive been reading this blog and the comments for the last 2 years and I really enjoy it, so thanks Pete, and thanks to all the intelligent posters like sj44 (congrats to you& your nephew), gb7, Betsy etc. And to all the stupid pessimistic posters, sometimes I get a kick out of you as well just lmao how silly you are!

With all the recent talk about Yankee stadium being a bandbox and all home runs hit there, does anybody know if there is a website that keeps home runs hit total for ballparks?

  104. JeterJobaFan May 26th, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Well, Kevin S. – pray, tell us what constitutes an “ACE”? If a team designates a pitcher an ace, is that good enough for you?

  105. Kevin S. May 26th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Have the Yankees ever designated Wang an ace?

Regardless, at his peak, Wang didn’t really crack into the top ten pitchers in the AL. Could he be a number one guy on, say, the Rangers? Sure he could. But while his game can be successful, pitching to contact is invariably going to lead to fluctuating results from game to game. Hard to be an ace when you need luck and defense to be on your side to have success. Yes, I do think strikeouts are required today to be an ace.

  106. Jerry-NJ May 26th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Remember that for years guys played with a glorified mitten on their hand, so errors were very common, so any errorless streaks are unlikely to have been set anytime before, say, the 1960s… Fields are better now too, and I think official scorers seem more generous towards the hitter these days, but that’s just an impression.

In any case, 12 errorless games is impressive, especially since defense has not been much of a priority in the construction of the 2000s Yankees teams…

  107. KO May 26th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

PA do you not realize there is a chance for an error on every single play, sometimes multiple chances, 3 or 4 chances on one play. on every play except a strikeout there is a chance for an error, and even in those at bats where someone k’s, because the catcher could receive a passed ball and an error. THere are so many chances for errors and all it takes is one slip up. 12 straight games without ONE error is sick.

  108. trisha - OPPC member May 26th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

“Twelve games? That’s it? Given how long the Yankees have been playing baseball, wouldn’t you think the record would be at least 20 games?”

I actually never thought about it but since they are the most successful franchise in the history of organized sports, I guess 12 games is more than acceptable.

    Next!

Another note on Sotomayor: she was also the judge who prevented Maurice Clarett from entering the NFL Draft after his sophomore year. So that combined with ending the strike makes her my hero. Good choice, brilliant woman, would do a great job.
