Oh, Jay-Z, you crack me up

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 29, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As was mentioned, A-Rod and several other players attended the Magic-Cavs game here last night. Via our pals at Big League Stew, here’s a shot of Alex yucking it up with Jay-Z.

(Jay-Z, meanwhile, seems to be channeling Phillip Michael Thomas back in the Miami Vice days).

According to the gossip pages, Alex stayed at the fancy Hotel ZaZa in Texas instead of with the team as he was with Kate Hudson, the once successful actress.

Some folks may wonder how this is part of the the “focus on baseball, remove all distractions” plan Alex was espousing. But if he keeps hitting home runs, he can hang out with Jennifer Hudson, the Hudson Brothers or Henry Hudson for all anybody cares.

“Meanwhile, according to the gossip pages, Alex stayed at the fancy Hotel ZaZa in Texas instead of with the team as he was with Kate Hudson, the one-time successful actress.”

    lol typical

  2. YankeeDiva May 29th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

So Alex is suppose to obstain from having realtionships for 9 months? Do the other players have to follow those same rules? What was distracting about Arod staying at another hotel with his ‘girlfriend’ do other players not stay with their girlfriends or wives?

  3. Brandon.. CashMoney: "his contract says baseball player, not starter" May 29th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

All I know is Kate Hudson is clutch, she can hang around him whenever.

  4. kevin May 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

I don’t like Arod getting into any celeb. trouble. his mind is too soft and vulnerable to endure an entire season with distractions. he needs discipline and focus

  5. Peter Abraham May 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

    YankeeDiva:

Calm down. I was making a joke. As I wrote, he can obviously do whatever he wants. Relax.

  6. NumberOnePositivePoster May 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Pete – you do know that positive posters, otherwise known as the killer bees, will be attacking soon? You know you can’t be lighthearted with these ultra serious positive posters up in here!!!

    Great job, Pete!!!

  7. Yanks BKN May 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

A-Rod needs drama in his life to succeed.

I wish he could just admit that rather than trying to preach the “I’m 100% focused only on baseball” mantra that he did the past 2 weeks.

As long as he is hitting the baseball, he can do whatever he wants. But it does come off as disingenuous.

  8. YankeeDiva May 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

    *abstain not obstain

  9. Benny Blanco May 29th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

I didnt know it was against the law to have a life after work.

Alex can hang with whomever he wants. Whats is he suppose to do?? Sleep with his bat in the batting cage??

  10. Bob(The Original) May 29th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Kate Hudson is a babe. Massive upgrade from Madonna. Well done Alex!

  11. Joe May 29th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Pete you are sure one miserable fat fu**, still jealous of A-Rod? Move on fatso and why not try a diet.

  12. NumberOnePositivePoster May 29th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

    Isn’t the word “abstain”?

Oh yeah, divas can’t spell and shouldn’t be watching sports where emotions should be kept in check. Go watch Steel Magnolias for the 1000th time.

  13. Glover May 29th, 2009 at 2:30 pm

That’s why I was shocked when he as the game yesterday

I didn’t think he would hang out with his teammates during an off-day rather than hanging out in Miami or NY with Kate

  14. E-gawa May 29th, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Pete, Would you mind if people reported what you did on your days off? Who you hung out with? What they look like? Where you went?

  15. JMZ May 29th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

“… the once successful actress …”

Lol, my god, such a hater.

  16. Benny Blanco May 29th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Derek wasn’t at the game, he was chilling with minka, but nobody cares about dereks boring social life. it’s not’s like he’s dates singers or actresses.

  17. Erica May 29th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Personally, I would be so much more impressed if he was dating Henry Hudson

  18. Tom in N.J. May 29th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Ah, things are getting back to normal in Yankee-Land.

  19. LA Dave May 29th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

It is only “disingenuous” if you took his quotes at face value. These players will tell you what you want to hear.

Just like Tex said that Girardi was the best manager he has ever played for, which we all know is BS. He played for Cox and Socscita

  20. you gotta have faith (right porch giveth and the right porch taketh away) May 29th, 2009 at 2:33 pm

Good job Pete. Subtly change the subject from Joba.

  25. hokiehill May 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Who cares where he stayed with you…I guess players aren’t allowed to see women at fancy hotels on off days…what’s the point of being a baseball player then?

  26. Stultus Magnus May 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

I don’t know, A-Rod doesn’t create as much drama as the sports media creates about him. Strippers, Madonna, Jeter upset, these are all stories that lived because people wanted to sell papers (or books). It’s not like he wouldn’t let those stories die.

  27. Richie May 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

I happen to know that it was Alex’s body double who was staying at the Hotel whatever it’s called.

  28. 66 stripes May 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Why would Jeter hang out at a basketball game in Cleveland when he can be in LA with Minka?

You only get so many off-days. Seeing a basketball game with teammates somewhere in the Mid-West is not the best use of that day.

  29. hokiehill May 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

should be where he stayed with WHO

  30. Just making a point May 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

    Kate Hudsons hot

“Does Francessa have any intelligent callers?”

no. At least, not enough to justify listening to his show.

bottom line: unless Kim Jones or Max Kellerman becomes a co-host, his show needs to be trashed and burned.

    it is stale air

  36. Stultus Magnus May 29th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

“Good job Pete. Subtly change the subject from Joba.”

It’s only a matter of time before it gets rolling again with Joba and Francesa comments. I’ll take under 5 (as in comments) excluding mine…

  37. Tom in N.J. May 29th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Other than ‘Almost Famous’, I can’t say I’ve seen anything Kate Hudson has been in.

Then again, she may be reprising her “Band-Aid” roll here for Alex.

    Good for them.

  38. ARodHasAThingForGeriatrics May 29th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

E-Gawa, have you ever heard of the word “LEVITY”?

Why do people get all offended if Pete says something that’s intended to be lighthearted against A-Rod? You act as if he just insulted your firstborn.

Grow the eff up already. Pete would be more likely to shake your hand out in the street than your great A-Rod. He gets paid to hit a baseball, THAT’S IT!!!! He isn’t insulting Abe Lincoln.

  39. Bryan May 29th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Kate Hudson doesn’t have manly muscles?

Has A-Rod turned over a new leaf?

  42. hokiehill May 29th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

    Nope, no intelligent listeners either…

  43. Erica May 29th, 2009 at 2:39 pm

I have suffered through the movie “Raising Helen”. I am inclined to agree with Pete’s assessment of Kate Hudson. “Almost Famous” is a great movie, but being in it only forgives you to be in so many other clunckers

  48. ARodHasAThingForGeriatrics May 29th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Fat ass Mike Francessa must be screening his callers, only favorable callers allowed.

I love how he’s always wearing black on television so you don’t see that big ass gut of his. He’s a Katz Deli pastrami sandwich away from a heart attack

Actually, as reported previously- Pete usually spends his days off with Bruce Springsteen :-)

  51. Jerkface May 29th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Jon Ringland: “I totally get and respect the fact that he has the potential to be a starting pitcher, but he was never as dominant at any time in his life as he was in the set up role. ”

    Untrue.

Joba as a reliever 2008 (when there was video and scouting reports: 35 Ip, 2.31 ERA , 1.171 Whip 44 Ks 9 ER

    Starter in 2008: 65.1 Ip 2.76 ERA, 1.301 Whip, 74 Ks, 20 ER

Joba as a starter in the minor leagues: 88.1 IP, 2.45 ERA, 1.008 WHIP, 135 Ks, 24 ER

Those are dominating numbers. Joba as a reliever post 2007 is not the same kind of pitcher as Joba 2007. It is unrealistic to expect that he will continue to blow guys away. He would be good, but not at the expense of losing a starter that is capable of throwing a 2 ERA up in the major leagues with a 9 K/9.

He is capable of throwing 97-99 MPH in the late innings of games when he has his full strength and mechanics working. There are youtubes of scouts radaring Joba in the minors at 97 in the 7th. We saw that kind of speed vs Boston in his shut out.

If you move Joba to the pen and then get 4 or 5, or god forbid less, innings out of Wang or Hughes, or Burnett/Pettitte blow the game in the 5th and 6th as they have been doing in some of their starts, then having Joba in the pen does NOTHING.

A guy who can get 3 outs for 1 inning is just not as valuable as someone who can hold the opposing team to a limited amount of runs over a greater number of innings.

Joba as a starter right now has a 3.97 ERA, so if we were to throw 9 IP we’d expect him to give up 4 runs. Thats alright considering our offense scores 5.5 a game. Last season he would give up 2 or 3 runs through 9 IP. How the hell do you think we are going to get that kind of value out of him if he is pitching 1 damn inning.

    Boggles my mind.

  52. Benny Blanco May 29th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Good thing its kate hudson, otherwise the media would have went through hoops to uncover info about an unkown woman he was dating.

  53. frankiedue May 29th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Yeah every time I listen to 660, the caller is agreeing with Francessa? Doesn’t anyone have balls or a mind of their own anymore?

  54. Stultus Magnus May 29th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Madonna happy for A-Rod and Kate? What’s it been, a week??

What the hell, I’m happy for him and his successful week of courtship too…

  56. ARodHasAThingForGeriatrics May 29th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Jay-Z and Beyonce are sharing the same clothes too. Jay-Z looks Pittsburgh Pirates Barry Bonds skinny. He needs hair plugs.

It was cool to see all those Yankees at the game last night. Yes, yes, including A-Rod

  57. Al from BK May 29th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

The bullpen is a serious problem and all the Jobber in the rotation folks need to realize this. Essentially we would be conceding this season for Joba’s development. No team gets deep in the playoffs without a bullpen.

  58. Stultus Magnus May 29th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Madonna raised the bar for him??

Wait, didn’t we have this discussion before?? Where’s Laura!? Laura, your heroine has resurfaced on this message board!

  60. Zach in Port Jeff May 29th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

I wonder where they went for dinner?

Isn’t A-Rod blacklisted from Hooters now? Maybe they ordered in.

  61. Brandon.. CashMoney: "his contract says baseball player, not starter" May 29th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

“Yeah every time I listen to 660, the caller is agreeing with Francessa? Doesn’t anyone have balls or a mind of their own anymore?”

No they’d rather go down on Mike’s. Hey even Sweeney Murti did it..see it’s a fad.

  62. vin May 29th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

“Yeah every time I listen to 660, the caller is agreeing with Francessa? Doesn’t anyone have balls or a mind of their own anymore?”

Hmm… wonder why. Phone screeners field calls and pass them onto him. He then chooses which ones to go to. Of course he’s not going to put on too many callers who disagree – no middle-aged man’s cardiovascular system could take what he would go through.

Unfortunately, sports talk radio is the lowest-form of entertainment. Just below (barely) reality programming / vote-off shows. If you’re lucky enough to find a show that’s not constantly in complete hysteria, then it is hosted by dullards (see XM’s baseball programming).

  63. Stultus Magnus May 29th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Man, I am sick of the Joba to the bullpen talk. Everyday…

Pete tried to change the subject. Thanks Pete.

  64. DCR May 29th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

I know you don’t like Rodriguez but this is ridiculous. Whats the big deal with him seeing a friend at the game and then staying at another hotel with his lady friend?

  65. vin May 29th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

“Tex does have a lot of arod in him.”

    I’m not going there.

“The bullpen is a serious problem and all the Jobber in the rotation folks need to realize this. Essentially we would be conceding this season for Joba’s development. No team gets deep in the playoffs without a bullpen.”

    ::bangs head against the wall::

  66. Lightening McQueen May 29th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

I don’t care if A-Rod is dating Doc Hudson from Cars, as long as he is hitting HRs and helps the team win.

BTW, whoever said Tex (I am too lazy to scroll back up and look) and A-Rod were the same is really insane. Try
Al-anon they can help you get off drugs. Tex is married, quiet, never been in trouble, hasn’t been linked to roids (yet), Madonna or any other crazy problems.

There is a double standard with A-Rod and DJ though. DJ is a pretty big player too, but no one follows him around to take pics of his women. He must have some hellacious body guards. I also think it is funny that if A-Rod isn’t with the team he isn’t being chummy (no offense to your post Pete, just saying the media in general so you are included somewhat), but DJ is never with the team away from the field.

    Just sayin…………

  67. Stultus Magnus May 29th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

“Whats the big deal with him seeing a friend at the game and then staying at another hotel with his lady friend?”

Boston plays Toronto this weekend for the second time, and will again miss having to face Doc. Every time the Yanks play Toronto, they get Holladay in the series it seems.

  69. DT May 29th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

    Don’t you guys get it.

For Francesa, Joba to the bullpen is like Pete’s Arod.

It’s a polar topic. It spurs the masses. It doesn’t matter if half the folks agree with you, or disagree with you. What matters is people are responding.

I’d happily trade 1 season for 7-8 seasons of ace Joba.

That’s a bit of a reach, but I would have no problem with sacrificing one season to gain an additional, cost controlled, homegrown ace, no doubt.

It all comes down to whether you believe he will be an ace in the future, and I do.

  101. Patrick May 29th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Obviously A-rod’s “only baseball” thing was a little BS. I’m sure he’s focused on the team and stuff but I don’t begrudge him a social life :) Kate Hudson is better than Madonna but he can do better.

Brandon is talking a lot of sense today, you people should listen to him. Stud starting pitchers beat us in the playoffs, not relievers. Lack of starting pitching has lost playoff series for us, not lack of relievers. Think back to our many playoff losses in recent years. The only time we lost because of an 8th inning reliever was Joba vs the bugs.

  102. Peter Abraham May 29th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

    This cracks me up.

I post a photo that ran on a major web site. I didn’t remotely criticize Alex. In fact, I wrote that he can do whatever he wants.

And the typical fanboys write that I’m picking on him. One chucklehead said I showed “disdain.”

Yes, imagine. I ran a photo of him talking to somebody. What a terrible attack. Vicious.

Just for an experiment I’m going to do a post with just his name and see how people accuse me of attacking him. You know they will.

Let me clarify myself before the entire bolg rips me.

What I meant regarding texeira is that he comes off as this super squeaky clean guy (which is all well and good). I’m not faulting him for that. But when I listen to him speak in interviews he has a propensity to come off as someone who always trys to say the right thing. Thats all..geesh

When none of us knew that the yankees were involved in the tex sweepstakes, people were killing him for taking forever to make a decision. He was coming off as a primadonna. Take off the rose color glasses.

  106. Tom in N.J. May 29th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

    Patrick, please stop making sense.

Now that the Yankees are playing well Mike Francesa ditto-heads need to complain about this team somehow.

  107. E-gawa May 29th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

“E-Gawa, have you ever heard of the word “LEVITY”?

Why do people get all offended if Pete says something that’s intended to be lighthearted against A-Rod? You act as if he just insulted your firstborn.

Grow the eff up already. Pete would be more likely to shake your hand out in the street than your great A-Rod. He gets paid to hit a baseball, THAT’S IT!!!! He isn’t insulting Abe Lincoln.”

Either you haven’t been on this blog long or you just don’t live in/near NYC. The Arod soap opera around here is a bit much. They report on everything the guy does and says. Some things he deserves but most of the stuff out there (like what Pete reports) he doesn’t deserve.

The “disdain” comment was from this chucklehead, and don’t even try to cover up the fact that you don’t like the guy, Pete! And that’s fine, we’re all entitled to our opinions. Truth be told I happen to agree with you, I think A-Rod’s a scumbag. But your anti-A-Rod posts have been numerous. You labeled him a clown, i mean thats pretty cut and dry. This particular post was not a “vicious or terrible attack”, rather, it was another passive jab at the guy.

Not shocked by the fact A-Roid is into Kate Hudson since even though she is pretty hot, she has the chest of a under-developed male.

Way to keep it butchy, A-Roid.

It hardly reads as a ringing endorsement for A-Rod. And it’s not like you started the post with something like “[insert writer] has an article today criticizing A-Rod for his off-day behavior” and then followed with your defense of him.

You used the old trick of “some folks may wonder . . .” An easy was for journalists to stir the pot or make an implication.

Well, who are those “folks” Pete? Have you heard from or read anyone making a big deal about what A-Rod does on his off-day????

2 descriptions of A Rod are apprpriate:

    1. He is a great player
    2. He public persona is that of a self centered clown

It doesn’t mean that as Yankee fans we can’t support his efforts on the field. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that even after his embarrassing admission that he has cheated in the past, A Rod could be the AL MVP this year. The record speaks for itself. The Yankees are a sub .500 team without him and a contender with him.

  146. ARodHasAThingForGeriatrics May 29th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

The other thing I find funny is that A-Rod wanted to be big, he wanted to be more mainstream than just his work in baseball. He wanted to be HOLLYWOOD. He got what he wanted and now you all want to paint him as a victim.

Seriously, he wanted it this way and he marketed himself that way. Now we are suppose to act like he should be getting the same press as Francisco Cervilli or some other unknown entity. This is A-Rod, he wanted to be known as A-Rod, he wants everyone to know how great he is, what time he wakes up to work out, and the Rembrandt paintings he’s collected.

I want him to hit the baseball, I want him to help the Yanks win, but to act like he’s a victim is really, really stupid. I am glad he’s back, I’m glad the Yanks are playing much better after he returned, but you know it’s only a matter of time before effs up.

Pete was only have fun here, there was nothing insulting of A-Rod with what Pete wrote but you all want to feel like a victim. Just like A-Rod wants you too. Enjoy the kool-aid!!

  150. Propaghandi May 29th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

This is Pete’s life. He spends it following around successful people and reporting on their much more vibrant and exciting lives. He does this at the expense of his own. If any of you did this, wouldn’t you be bitter and petty too?

Now it’s true that even if Pete didn’t have this job his only chance at a woman would be to buy a Porsche and win the lottery but nevertheless that’s a tough pill to swallow. It’s much easier to take cheap shots at ARod and Berroa than to look in the mirror and realize what a supersized, hideous looking goober you are, how you have absolutely nothing to offer the opposite sex, and how you will die alone.

So go nuts Pete. Keep “doing what you do”. You rock man! Now let’s get back to business. I’m jonesing for another Berroa “age” joke. Those crack me up so much! Ever think of doing stand up? Don’t let me down!

My whole question with this thread is what did Arod do that was out of the ordinary that Pete felt the need to write a thread about him? Arod wasn’t the only Yankee to chat with Jay-Z at the game. Heck he wasn’t the only Yankee at the game. I asked in the very beginning do other players not spend time with their girlfriends or wives on the road? If not why does it matter that Arod spent time with Kate while in Texas?

I’m tired of all the childish crap that the media is pulling, acting like a bunch of gossip girls. Are you a gossip writer or a beat writer? If you are a beat writer, then write about the team not who is staying with who in which hotel.

Arod is a yankee. We are yankee fans. You report on the yankees. Therefore there will be pictures and articles about Arod. I didn’t find your remarks insulting at all. That is why I come to your site. You have more than just the run of the mill items on it. Seems like much ado about nothing to me. Thanks for the picture. Looks like Arod is relaxed and having a good time. That is what I want. Because it seems to be working.

    3. what’s with the personal attacks on pete? attack his work all you want, but the personal jabs are so unnecessary.

    4. pete, if no one else will admit it, i appreciate a little gratuitous yankee gossip now and then. keep it coming!

Not like Jeter’s pulling the talented or famous, those days are long gone. Pete, the comment was funny. Nothing wrong with a little humor.

ARodHasAThingForGeriatrics you are ridiculous. Pretty Woman? Because I make a sarcastic comment about journalist using false “sources” to insert their opinion into a piece they want the public to think unbiased. That makes me have dreams of Pretty Woman being my life?

I don’t know where to start with you so I won’t.

Checked out IMDB for Kate Hudson movies…
I would suggest the following sequels:

    “Nine” – “Thirteen”

    “Bride Wars” – “Roid Wars”

“My Best Friend’s Girlfriend” – “My Former Best Friend’s Girlfriend’s Cuter”

    “Fool’s Gold” – “Fool’s Gold Gloves”

“Le Divorce” – “Le Divorce of Cynthia”

“The Four Feathers” – “The Four Baggers”

“You and me and Dupree” – You and me and Yuri”

“Alex and Emma” – TOOO Easy

“How to lose a guy in 10 days” – “How to get linked to a guy in 10 days”

“Doctor T and the Women” – “Doctor P and the Hip-Man”

    “Almost Famous” – “Always Infamous”

Trading Madonna for Kate Hudson is like trading a Mazda for a Ferrari. Well done A-Rod!!!! For the first time, I can actually say I’m proud of him!!!

What’s the fascination with the personal lives of the players on our team? It’s none of our business regarding player’s May to December romances..It’s how we finish in October that should be of concern…If we’re not there for the World Series, then the personal lives will be to blame for failure, you think? Pleaseeeeee…
