Hey, Mr. Ryan, please sign

Fans would be surprised at how many baseball players aren’t really fans of the game or the history of the game. Because they were so good at playing the game when they were younger, they didn’t watch a lot of it on television.

But some players, like Phil Hughes, are avid collectors. So when the Yankees were in Texas, Phil sought the autograph of Nolan Ryan, who is now the president of the Rangers.

Phil purchased an old-school Ryan jersey from the team and had it delivered to Ryan to sign. “To Phil: Good luck with your baseball career. Nolan Ryan,” was written in blue pen when he got it back.

Hughes plans to get it framed.

If you recall, he’s the reason Hughes switched to the number 34 last season.

  2. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Ha, that’s what I would do.

  3. Uncle Ellsworth May 30th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Maybe Phil should worry about his pitching and not autograghs!

  4. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Uncle, is that a joke? He shut out the Rangers.

  5. Betsy May 30th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Yes, I remember that Jermaine – too bad, as I always thought 65 was a cool number. I love Ryan, but I’m glad that Phil reclaimed 65……

  6. Uncle Ellsworth May 30th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

just kidding. he should be able to amass quite a collection.

  7. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC May 30th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

  10. Tseng- Rename "Cy Young Award" the "Swisher" award. May 30th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Very nice of Ryan. That’s something I’d have framed and mounted too, were I Phil.

  11. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Guys, I’d just like to mention that Andy Pettite can’t pitch the eighth inning.

  12. Nick in SF May 30th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

    NOLAN RYAN WAS A STAHTAH!!!!

  13. Pel (Uncertainty is certain.) May 30th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I personally think that Joba as a starter is ridiculous. Ridiculous!

  18. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! May 30th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Ortiz BA at .186. .175 can’t be that far off. Maybe he’d better if he were batting 9th. :P

  19. Nick in SF May 30th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

BRAD PENNY CANNOT PITCH THE 8TH INNING!!!!

  20. Doreen May 30th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

    Fran -

Thanks, I will look into the Caesar’s Club.

    Laura -

My oldest daughter, while a Yankees fan, does like David Wright so she’s got a Wright t-shirt to wear. Me? I could wear the Teixeira shirt I just bought. :)

I found out they have an Alyssa Milano shop at Citi Field – perhaps on one of my walks with daughter #2, I’ll take a look in there and get some fitted gear – although they probably won’t have any Yankees stuff, huh?

    Christina -

Yes, we have one of the few girls in the spectrum. She is 19 now and really a delightful young lady, but let’s just say we’ve learned to adapt. Gotta be flexible. It’s helped my stress level immensely to have learned to go with the flow.

  21. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

The next day Francessa just decided to completely ignore all his starts from 08′.

  22. Doreen May 30th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

    Back to topic -

It’s really cool that Phil Hughes has an appreciation for the history of the game. It’ also really cool that Nolan Ryan went along. :)

  23. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

    That was just too funny.

I wonder if the fat slob even realizes people are making fun of him.

  24. Tom in N.J. May 30th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

“Ortiz BA at .186. .175 can’t be that far off. Maybe he’d better if he were batting 9th”

To be fair, it’s hard to hit when you have a giant fork sticking out of your back.

  25. Kelvin Ace May 30th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Boston and Toronto tied up, 3-3.

    Let’s hope Jays win it.

  26. Brandon.. "ANDY PETTITTE IS A STARRRRTIN PITCHAAA !!!" May 30th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

“Ortiz BA at .186. .175 can’t be that far off. Maybe he’d better if he were batting 9th.”

Sad how now people are realizing just now that the Red Sox weren’t exactly clean during thier champion run either.

“I found out they have an Alyssa Milano shop at Citi Field – perhaps on one of my walks with daughter #2, I’ll take a look in there and get some fitted gear – although they probably won’t have any Yankees stuff, huh?”

They might. There’s a sports store very near the Cell here and they carry Yankees stuff. You never know.

By the way, when did Alyssa Milano become MLB’s poster girl? I guess when you date as many baseball players as she does, she’s sorta earned it. I’m surprised she hasn’t had a crack at A-Rod yet. I guess we should give her time. She’ll get around to it.
    :P

  28. Dassit May 30th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

did you guys see the remix of the Francesa rant? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....annel_page

  29. RhapsodyInBlue May 30th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I’m sure Francesa is aware his girth is the subject of ridcule, why else would he drink so much diet coke?

  30. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! May 30th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

“To be fair, it’s hard to hit when you have a giant fork sticking out of your back.”

True, true. I’m anxiously awaiting to see how long BOS goes with this guy. I’m sure that they don’t want to hurt his feelings, but he is adding absolutely nothing to their offense. You can’t be a DH if you don’t get any hits. He already can’t play the field; now, he doesn’t even get hits. What use is he?

  31. Eric May 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

For our sake, we better hope Ortiz figures it out soon otherwise Boston will go out and get a big bat

  32. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

I hope Big Papi is sent to the minors.

  33. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Eric, I disagree. Ortiz figuring it out IS a big bat.

  34. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! May 30th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

“I hope Big Papi is sent to the minors.”

They will probably put him on the DL until they can figure out how to get him his steroids w/o anyone noticing. Heeheehee!

  35. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

It’s nice to know that our DH is supposedly (I disagree) “finished” and he still is better than Ortiz. And Burrell.

  36. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! May 30th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

I would think that BOS would be interested in Matt Holliday. Of course, Holliday is proving to be a “Coors Field only” hitter. They may pass on him and try and sign Jason Bay.

  37. GreenBeret7 May 30th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Boston is petitioning MLB to change Ortiz’ position to DS….designated swinger. Even they know that “hitter” is now a pipe dream.

  38. Doreen May 30th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

    Laura -

Yeah – apparently Ms. Milano is a huge baseball fan, inherited from her father and brothers and is an even huger Dodgers fan. She had a blog for a while, don’t know if she still keeps it. She dated Carl Pavano, but I don’t know about any others. I guess it’s not bad for such a pretty girl to be a spokesperson for baseball. :) At least she sounds like she knows what she’s talking, from what little I’ve read.

  39. Brandon.. "ANDY PETTITTE IS A STARRRRTIN PITCHAAA !!!" May 30th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

    Dassit’s attempt * FAIL *

    Batting clean up Brandon

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrZSM–5T4o * SUCCESS *

  40. Fran (the original) and OPPC member May 30th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Doreen, I am pretty sure Alyssa dated Brad Penny also.

  41. Sand Man- May 30th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

A room with clones of Nady and Markakis?

  42. Terry from NH May 30th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Alex Rios makes it 4-3 Jays in the bottom of the 7th

  43. Kelvin Ace May 30th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

    Toronto Leads 4-3, yay!

Keep it up boys, Now Yankees just handle their business tonight, we win, we stay in first place, nice day.

  44. Brandon.. "ANDY PETTITTE IS A STARRRRTIN PITCHAAA !!!" May 30th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

That LF wall in Shea is a joke, I could see the Yankees doing that in YS but Metsies it’s already 371 to LF why the 16 FOOT wall ?

If she dated Pavano I hope she stays away from any of the current Yankees.

  46. Terry from NH May 30th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Make that 5-3 Jays as Wells doubles and scores Rios off Ramirez.. Keep it going Jays!!

  47. SMike R. May 30th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

    4-3, Jays

Not going to get excited yet though. This is the same bullpen that blew a 5 run lead 2 days ago

  48. My name isn't Earl May 30th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

    Yes! Jays lead!

  49. RalphieD (OPPC all day) May 30th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

borrowing a joke from red sox fan bill simmons. i like it. i like it very much.

is anyone watching enough sox games to tell me what exactly is going on with ortiz? please no steroids jokes. maybe that’s actually it, but i’ve been in europe for the past three months and haven’t been able to watch many games. when i do it’s the yankees. if anyone can fill me in on what exactly is the deal with ortiz, numbers aside, i’d appreciate it.

  51. Red Dragons May 30th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

    Mets created Petco Park 2

And we created Coors Field 2 LOL

Try Brad Penny, Barry Zito and even Tom Glavine. Like I said, the girl likes baseball players. LOL!

  53. RhapsodyInBlue May 30th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Milano was dating Penny last season when he was with the Dodgers.

  54. Brandon.. "ANDY PETTITTE IS A STARRRRTIN PITCHAAA !!!" May 30th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

RalphieD, they prbly took it down.

    Brandon, you failed too

  57. randy l. May 30th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

as a baseball fan, it doesn’t make me happy to see ortiz regressing .

i’m glad the red sox are missing a big force in their line up , but ortiz seems like a good guy and watching someone as good as he was struggle isn’t fun to watch.

also, he has the kind of body that goes fast when it goes. no one nows for sure if he was a serious steroid user. there are other explanations for the on going slump.

if however it is steroid related, he may just be going through a period where his body is weak while it adjusts to making his own testosterone again.

no matter what it is i don’t root for someone like ortiz to have his career falling apart.

  58. Dassit May 30th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

    failed again :(

  59. 86w183 May 30th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

highlight the link, copy the text, past it in the address bar, remove the “—” from “lrZSM—5T4o” and replace it with a regular hyphen -.

  61. Doreen May 30th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

Whoa! She really gets around – but Tom Glavine? When was that? Now, I realize that the next thing I’m going to type is probably silly in this context, but, isn’t he married??

    :)

  62. KO May 30th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

I knew I liked Phil. Smart move on his part and a pretty cool souvenir to take back from Texas.

  63. Vicki May 30th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

She never dated Tom Glavine. She was photographed with him at a Mets game a few years ago, but she was photographed with other Mets too. She definitely dated Barry Zito, Brad Penny, and Carl Pavano though.

  64. Nate May 30th, 2009 at 9:28 pm

Phil Hughes is awesome. He’s just a kid, but he loves baseball and he’s not afraid to show it…It makes it easy to forget the fact that growing up he was a dirty, filthy, stinkin’ Red Sox fan. :)

  65. B.Stanley May 30th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

“To Phil: Red Sox Suck! Shelley Duncan.”

Haha I actually laughed out loud at that.

  66. The Thurm May 30th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Nolan was always the best with the fans no matter what. He is a true baseball god.

  67. drunk tan pussy July 23rd, 2009 at 6:59 pm

    mm. strange.
