Tribe no friend of its fans

This blog has been tough on the Yankees for not allowing fans closer to the field for batting practice at the new Stadium.

But fairness demands we mention this: The Indians do not open the gates of Progressive Field until 90 minutes before first pitch. The home team is long done by batting practice by then.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. But at least the Yankees let fans in plenty early.

    Why would they do that?

  2. m June 1st, 2009 at 11:36 am

The Yankees open their gates earlier, so they can afford all the players on the field.

seems to me that if you were a fan of the Indians you’d rather see their BP than the away team…maybe they don’t want to pay for extra vendor/ticket collector etc time if they know not enough people come that early to justify the cost…who knows, but it doesn’t seem right to me.

From the link that CB posted in the last thread

    Prospectus Q&A
    Tony Sanchez

“DL: Most guys say that they don’t care which team drafts them. Is that really true?

TS: Whoever gives you the best opportunity to play, that’s all we want, really. I mean, I’d love to play for the Boston Red Sox; I’d love to play at Fenway Park in front of 30,000 fans and the best fan-base in the game. But if Kansas City is going to give me a chance to be a successful major league catcher, I’m going to work just as hard for them as I would for the Red Sox. I’d love to go home and play for Florida, and have my friends and family watching me, but if that doesn’t happen, I’m not going to be upset about it. Anywhere that I play, I’m going to be just as happy.”

Doesn’t the kid know that if he wants the Lohud Karma he can’t be saying things like that?! ;)

Of course the Ynaks let fans in early. They want them to buyas many $10 beers and $6 hotdogs as possible.

I have attended games there for years when the Yankees are in town and it has always been that way. The first time we went I was shocked that by the time we were in we didn’t get to see BP. I have very fond memories of seeing BP at Yankee Stadium when I was growing up in NJ. I primed my kids for the excitement of it and blah. Nothing. Oh well.

It’s probably because they understand that the fanbase wants to stay in Cleveland for the shortest possible time.

Uncle SJ44 must be spitting bullets.

  9. SJ44 June 1st, 2009 at 12:08 pm

That’s his mothers influence on him. She’s the lone Red Sox fan in the family. LOL

It’s actually the same at Camden Yards too. I live in the Bmore area and see the Yankees there more often than I make it up to the Stadium. It works fine for me because that means I can catch the Yankees BP, but you can only watch the O’s take BP from the Standing Room Only section on Eutaw Street. The park itself doesn’t open up until after the O’s BP is over.

Hah, but I see they let midges and gulls in any time!

  12. Art Vandelay June 1st, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Even if a New York team drafted Tony Sanchez, he wouldn’t make it there because it sounds like he has a lot to learn about what not to say to the media.

“It’s my mother’s dream for me to play for the Boston Red Sox…”

    :)

Happy June!! Lets go 17-10 this month.

When does the Jesus get the call to AA this season?

  16. rodg12 June 1st, 2009 at 12:20 pm

That’s the policy in KC, Minneapolis, Detroit and Chicago. Still enough time to get in and watch the Yanks take BP, so no worries for me. :)

question, who could the yankees DFA that’s on the 40 man roster in order to bring up either linden, rodriuguez or duncan?

  18. Jon Ringland June 1st, 2009 at 12:21 pm

The Yankees as an organization really need to lighten up.

  19. Patrick June 1st, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Joe, probably not until next season. He needs a full season at A+. Yeah he is doing great at the plate but he needs to continue working on his catching skills. Tampa is the best place to do that.

  20. lordbyron June 1st, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Sadly, I think you’ll find most teams/ballparks don’t allow fans to enter until 90 minutes before gametime – thereby depriving fans of the ability to watch BP or any other pregame workout activities.

  21. m June 1st, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Isn’t Montero only 15 yrrs. old or something?

Anyone know how Kyle Higashioka is doing?

  22. CountryClub June 1st, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Jesus is 19. Turns 20 in Nov.

  23. CountryClub June 1st, 2009 at 12:32 pm

Both last year and this year Montero has completely mashed playing against competition that is 2 years older than he is. If he gets bumped to AA this year and keeps hitting at close to his current rate it would be freakish.

  24. Patrick June 1st, 2009 at 12:32 pm

Jesus Montero turned 19 this past November.

Right now in high-A ball he is hitting .355/.404/.593 with 8 HR, 15 doubles, 36 RBI in 46 games.

  25. Rishi June 1st, 2009 at 12:33 pm

    new post – mailbag…

  26. Patrick June 1st, 2009 at 12:34 pm

Higashioka played for the GCL yanks last year, only 18 games. He hasn’t been assigned to a team yet this season. Either injured or in extended spring training.

  27. m June 1st, 2009 at 12:39 pm

    Thanks, everyone.

  28. Joe Monte June 1st, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Patrick, fair points regarding the Jesus. But he’s near 1.000 OPS so you wonder how much more he has to learn at High A ball.

  29. goirish June 1st, 2009 at 1:37 pm

It was always 90 min at the OYS.

  30. Christina25 June 1st, 2009 at 1:44 pm

That’s his mothers influence on him. She’s the lone Red Sox fan in the family. LOL

I love this kid. I hope the Red Sox drafts him and signs him.

  31. Rachel June 1st, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Maybe it is because it is a smaller fan base and it would cost the team more money to open the stadium earlier then the money it actually makes in that time span. I would think money has alot to do with it. Maybe Indian fans don’t care about batting prcice or there team to arrive that early to the game.

  32. saucy June 1st, 2009 at 4:27 pm

i thought the yankees changed the rules and now let fans down by the field during BP?

am i going crazy? i’m pretty sure i read this here!

  33. Jerry June 4th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Wrong, Pete. They let you in at 4:30, but only in the outfield. Did watch BP for both clubs. At 6 they let you go to your seat, but wouldn’t let you down by the dugouts. They shoo-ed you off past first base. Very unfriendly, I agree.

    Joba’s diving catch was awesome.
