If Girardi really thinks it’s necessary to have an extra infielder, then can’t we trade Berroa and Veras for Wilson Betemit?

  2. sunny615 June 2nd, 2009 at 8:20 am

Berrora and Veras wouldn’t get you a Betemit. They’d get you a half eaten Dorito.

  3. RhapsodyInBlue June 2nd, 2009 at 8:25 am

At least Berrora played decent defense and didn’t commit an error last evening.

For that reason alone I think he is at least entitled for us to wait until at least noon before trashing him.

    How about 10 am?

    …….Ugh, my post got eaten…..

The bird situation last night had nothing on what happened in Milwaukee years ago. Sterling Hitchcock was on the mound when all of a sudden, a HUGE flock of birds (much bigger than last night’s) descended on the field. It was a scene straight out of the Twilight Zone.

I’m torn regarding Phil. I think he will learn more getting ML hitters out, but I don’t want him in the pen as it will curtail his development. He will only gain consistency with his curve and other pitches by throwing them, and he wouldn’t be doing that in the pen. Also, I agree with Guiseppe Franco – I don’t like the back and forth with him. If the Yanks make the post-season, then fine – put Phil in the pen (it’s only short term). Phil’s a very good, mature kid. If the Yankees send him down, they will explain that it’s not punishment or a demotion and that they are very happy with his progress. He’ll go out and do his thing in Scranton and just wait for his call up – he won’t sulk.

No, no, no. No trashing Angel today. He did fine – the number one thing for him to do was “no harm,” and he did that. I say Angel gets a respite today. :)

wow, Tribe pitchers gave up 11 BBs last night…cela n’est pas bonne.

I love how John Harper of the news has to criticize the AL East as not as good as expected in order to give the Yankees their due……….what a surprise that it would be someone from the Daily News doing this. The AL East is still the best division, by far – it’s brutal. I suppose he’s going by records, which is asinine, because the teams will beat each other up while the Tigers and Rangers can beat up on mediocrities.

    sj44-

    it’s a great time for tony .

i asked about tony’s eye dominance a few days ago. the reason i asked is that you said he might not hit for a high average. 2/3 of the population has eye dominance on the same side as their handedness.

if tony were right eye dominant, his right eye would be his back eye when hitting right handed. this can sometimes be a problem if a player has a closed stance because the dominant right eye gets blocked out by the nose.

that sounds funny but try it . i am cross dominant- left eye dominant and right handed, but i hit left handed so my dominant eye is in the back. until i developed an open stance( like damon) so my face was more square to the pitcher allowing my dominant eye to see better, i has visual holes when hitting.

just opening my stance totally changed how i saw the ball. i hit for a much higher average after opening up and seeing the ball better. the problem is that where you think the ball is ,it isn’t. try this test if you haven’t already done this to find your own dominant eye:

    http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/eyedom.htm

when you see the object jump that you are looking at will demonstrate the problem of how an object like a baseball can “move” if your dominant eye is blocked from seeing directly.

you would not believe the problems dominant eye cause with putting in golf. what you see is not necessarily what’s there .

at any rate tony should know what his dominant eye is. if he’s left eyed dominant no problem because his dominant eye would be out front as a right handed hitter, but if it’s in the back( for him right eye dominant), it may be a factor in him not seeing some pitches if his face doesn’t face the pitcher.

Betsy- I started to read that article than gave up.

I had on idiot and jock this morning. It took them nearly 40 minutes to mention the Yankees. All it was, was crying I don’t know why I am shocked.

  14. SJ44 June 2nd, 2009 at 9:04 am

That makes a lot of sense Randy. I’m going to follow up on that with him when he gets back from KC.

This week has been crazy so far. Lots of discussions with Pittsburgh, and a lot of rumors flying around.

I’m more used to the football draft, based on previous business experience.

Aside from having ownership stakes in a few minor league teams and a few other business dealings, baseball is the one sport I tried to stay away from business-wise. Mainly because, I wanted one sport that can actually be a sport, and not a business, for me.

    With Tony, that’s all changed.

One thing I find that blows me away about baseball and their talent evaluation priniciples is, how much they use a players past for and against him.

By that I mean, since Tony was not drafted or heavily recruited out of HS. Some teams are using that against him. That seems odd to me because they aren’t looking at a player on the rise. They are rooted in what he was at 17.

That doesn’t happen in football. NFL teams could care less what you did in HS. They care about the type of player you are now. Not so much with many teams in baseball.

I see now why so many teams miss on guys early in the draft. They are too caught up in their histories and not seeing them in their present.

Tony is a kid that has gotten better every year he has played since he was 16 years old. Hard to understand how that actually hurts him with some teams.

Either way, its pretty amazing a kid can go from being a non-entity in scouts minds 3 years ago to the best catcher in the draft today.

If he did that in football, his draft day would include guaranteed money topping 10 million dollars. In baseball, its about fighting negative previous pereceptions and just hoping for the right match between player and team.

  15. Veras must go June 2nd, 2009 at 9:13 am

Thanks for the update Pete… I’ve been waiting for this info.

    SJ44

I read about Tony on one site and they refered to how he had been out of shape at one time. Even though he had worked to overcome that it was still in the report.

It doesn’t make sense to judge a young kid that way because there is a maturity factor that should be in play. It’s almost as if they are trying to find what’s wrong with them than what’s right.

From hearing what you have said about him it seems like one of Tony’s best assets is a level head. That can be a big factor in how far he can go.

I hope the draft goes well for him and he goes to a team that is good at developing their prospecys.

If Nady’s injury continues to be a problem it’s not the worst idea to go after the versatile Mark DeRosa as long as Cleveland doesn’t mention McAllister, De La Rosa, Betances, Hughes, or others considered untouchable.

  19. goirish June 2nd, 2009 at 10:59 am

Thanks for the info. I have tickets to that game. Now I have three months to figure out how I’m going to get to a Monday night game!

  20. Yankeejewboy June 2nd, 2009 at 11:55 am

Cool I was at that rain out. I paid $25.00 4 a ticket second level it’ll be worth much more in september.

  21. kylelitke June 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 pm

    Thank you Pete!

I have tickets for that game and it might be the only time I get the chance to go to the Stadium this season. I was afraid they weren’t going to make it up at all unless necessary.

  22. igotid88 June 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 pm

I was waiting for this. I bought a ticket from stubhub. So I wouldn’t of been able to get a refund.
